Turns out the Australian government doesn’t believe it’s own spin

Therapeutic Goods Administration, a government office, claims there is “little evidence” to assess “clinical utility” of PCR or blood tests

The premier, Daniel Andrews wants to extend the state of emergency for another 12 months so he can hand all decisions over to the Chief Health Officer and claim he is doing the right thing.

Both the politicians and the mainstream media quack endlessly about ‘evidence-based policy’ and ‘following the science’. That is a lie.

They are relying on tests that, by the government’s own admission, are not reliable. This is not conflicting views amongst ‘experts’. This is the government itself. It is an extraordinary scandal and if there was a functioning media, the government would be exposed for gross incompetence and political aggression.

Plenty of hype, full of promotion, lots of glitz, a brand that depends on one person, but like an iceberg not a lot to see.
Appear to be worth a lot more than the performance, in terms of results, would suggest they should.

      The Tesla Model S would beat it 0 – 60. And they feel ludicrously fast because of the way they accelerate. After that the corvette would take over, 1/4 mole etc. I had a hot Mark 3 Zephyr. Lol.

        bruceavon, apparently with just a software upgrade that vette can produce 1000 hp ,its 700 standard and the best thing about it is that in 10 years it’ll still be worth heaps when the Tesla is being recycled for the second time.

      When I was your neighbours son’s age I was at Uni and had a Datsun 120Y, that was 1 year older than me and that my stepdad (ex-mechanic, then metalwork teacher) restored. The poor thing was more bog than steel by then. AFAIK it originally belonged to the vicar of Edgecumbe, before bought by our over-the-back neighbour in Tok, just about 3 or 4 years before she stopped driving.

  1) It would continually veer to the left.
  2) Even when you try to go to the right.
  3) Would continually break down and continually cost you money.
  4) The on-board computer would randomly throw wobblys, making it unpredictable.

      Did you notice that of the 5 Prime Ministers that Andrea referenced she (Andy) always used diminutives of their real names when she referred to them? She says –
      “Sir John Key was never Johnnie. Sir Bill English was not called Billie. No Jimmy Bolger, Robbie Muldoon or Mikey Moore?”
      She routinely referred to “Bill” English, not (Simon) William English. She would say “Rob” Muldoon, not Robert and “Mike” Moore, not Michael.
      Is it OK to use diminutives for men’s names but not those of women?

    There is a lot of truth in the article. A quick scan of articles by Vance indicates that even when she is criticising someone, she addresses them by their correct name or title and very rarely resorts to ad hominem, demeaning names or descriptions.
    
    If you want to persuade somebody to a point of view, you should focus on the point of view and not add any distractions that may lead to the reader dismissing both article and author.
    
    Much of course depends on the reason for belittling. Much of it is simply the manifestation of a desire to insult. That may make the poster feel a bit better but if the thrust of the argument is to persuade, for example, an undecided voter or get someone to see reason, it is really an abject failure.
    As Albert_Ross says, the whole thrust of the argument goes down the toilet if a reader comes away with a sense of outrage about belittling comments and has no recollection of what the article was really about.

    The infamous Wellington story was about a “rooting pig”.
    
    But let’s not forget that as recently as 2014, a Labour candidate in Rangitata referred to John Key as “Shylock”, a clear reference to Key’s Jewish heritage. That’s every bit as offensive and racist as referring to David Wong-Tung as an “ape”, a “half-breed”, and a “chinky-chong “, especially given that Wong-Tung isn’t in politics himself.

But on the other hand, while you can remember all of the epithets (vividly) can you recall any reason point being made or intended to be made by the article, comment, post or whatever? For the most part, whatever is written is dismissed (usually with a sense of outrage) and the actual message is lost forever.

  AV’s self-appointment as spokesperson for NZ women is hypocritical hubris of the highest order. Vance is the gutter journalist who arrived here, steaming-fresh from the British phone-hacking News of the World tabloid rag, to educate us in the colonies how dirty “journalism” could be. And done a great job.
  
  Andrea: “Cindy” is a term of endearment here, especially when you compare it with some of the other names I’ve heard for her. We love her, we all call her Cindy.
  
  Feel the kindness, embrace it Cindy.
  
  Edit: Piggy, Soimon, Winnie…etc are all examples of not-so-endearing nicknames other NZ politicians have had, but you don’t hear them bitching and whining about it.

    As I am semi detached in all of this one thing that leaps out at me is the way the Prime Minister, Grant and Chris play the Moral Indignation Card.
    
    Whenever they are in error they start a conference with it, expecting the gullable to nod how terrible how awful to be so nasty.
    
    It is the grand deflection, my reading of Judith’s reaction to her husbands intervention was she was on the money.
    
    Next time she speaks she needs to remind everyone in a micro second she has a nick name and then get straight on to the substantive issues and you elder statesmen journalists need to knock this out of the park this week. Leave it to them.
    
    It will not be easy the media is full of how everyone is feeling about the news rather than the news itself. Maybe thats because a lot of the time there is no news. Now there is and its really really important to deal with all the issues.
    
    Covid 19 s never about what do three months of 100% testing a whole population look like or how many people entered the country with no test between 9th April and June 8th or the consequences of the health agency’s findings that 50% of Symptomatic Cases were never tested in the first wave or the consequences for policy given no one knows where this second wave came from. it’s about oh my god someone died and how do we feel about it.   Complains that people didn’t shorten John Key’s name – well duh it’s already as short as you can get it, and as mentioned there were plenty of examples of his name being changed for so-called laughs. Good friends of mine used to only refer to him as DonKey and apparently people called their toilet keys John Key. Plus many called him John Keys which is just lazy.

I’m not sure that Andrea Vance is doing the Prime Minister any favours with this blatant puff piece.
Explaining is losing as they say.
If I was in Ms Ardern’s leadership position, I would find it demeaning and embarrassing to have a media mate feeling obliged to to contribute this in the middle of an election campaign.
Also interesting to see a large Labour Party advertisement at the end of the opinion piece.
Am assuming this would be a paid advertisement?
Which would indicate that the Labour Party spin team knew it was coming.
If Ms Ardern knew about all this and accepted the gift, she has gone well down in my respect index for her.

    @Inv2 just to add to your post, I recall how Jacinda Ardern revelled mocking Simon Bridges with the “it’s Simple, Simon” line, she was rather gleeful if not outright pleased with herself.
    
    Interestingly enough, a quick google search reveals the phrase is quite nasty (in more explicit terms than the nursery rhyme portrays), and presumably that is what Jacinda Ardern was intending to convey.
    
    According to the Collins Dictionary it means “a foolish man or boy”, according to Longman it means “a stupid person” and if one goes to the urban dictionary it means a lot worse (“mentally retarded” etc).
    
    It is “interesting” then how Jacinda and Labour carefully scripted using this term in response to Simon Bridges in Question Time. It reveals a deliberate strategy to use a phrase to get around using language (i.e. “stupid”, “foolish”, “mentally retarded”) that would normally would not be allowed by the Speaker to describe another member of Parliament.
    
    I go back to what I opened this up with – Jacinda Ardern revelled mocking Simon Bridges in this manner and was very much pleased with herself afterwards. What does this show (of Jacinda’s character)?
    
    And when has Simon Bridges (or Todd Muller or Judith Collins for that matter) ever used similar derogatory phrases against Jacinda Ardern?
    
    Which makes me wonder what was the point of the Andrea Vance article. Yes I understand Andrea Vance’s points – they are fair points (and clearly she has been brought up well enough to respect people’s names and has continued with that professional approach – good on her) but if National/ACT politicians aren’t calling generally Jacinda “Cindy” (let alone “stupid”, “foolish” etc) why on earth is she trying to tell “citizens” to stop using “silly names”? For better or worse and for years if not decades, that’s how Kiwi’s roll (I grew up hearing the phrase “Piggy Muldoon” for years and years)!
    
    So is the point of Andrea Vance’s article really to do with the National Facebook Memes (or whatever it is called – I don’t care enough about Facebook to look), because Judith Collins’ husband re-posted some memes about Jacinda Ardern?

The linked article does contain an assertion that I disagree with though, namely that serology tests are not good at picking up infections. They are, just not in the early stages (days 0-7). Even if all of those were false positives (they are not!), the false positive rate would be a mere 1.8 per thousand tests, or 0.18%. So, even if it is true that the tests can pick up dead viruses (and Russia Today is hardly the authority), that happens very rarely.
  In the US, the positive test rate is steady at 5-6%. Even if their false positive rate was as high as 0.18%, the great majority of their positive results are true positives.

    When it comes to statistics then the following matter:
    1) Who gets tested? Are they random tests of self selected? Are people being tested when they have had contacts or just because they feel like it?
    2) What sort of tests? Antigen or antibody? They test very different things.
    
    The other thing is to consider what to benchmark against. This is the first time there has been huge population testing of this sort. There is nothing that we can compare with.
    
    For example, the sars-cov-2 tests will pick up the 80% or more of people who test positive but are asymptomatic. In previous events (eg. Spanish flu) there was no testing available only people that got symptoms were counted.

    Of course, once upon a time the government owned its own office buildings, on the absurd rationale that it required very long-term accommodation. A wise government solved that problem long ago, by committing departments to very long leases with Government Property Services, and then selling all the buildings.

      It doesnt mater which buildings the Govt go into its the total number that counts. The Wellington office space market is not very big and if you add another 1000 shiney arsed bureaucrats then it sucks up a lot of office space.
      My contracting company was doing a LOT of work in Wellington in the late Clark era, totally dysfunctional office space market with less than 3% vacancy… it wasnt possible for a large outfit to lease a new space and have the time to fit it out and transfer over in a rational manner , there just wanst enough empty space for that. So we did crazy contracts where (say) 5,000M2 of space was totally rebuilt (new everything including full AC systems) in 6 weeks and all the new gear put in for a changeover.
      I sold up and “retired” after that 🙂

      Except the checkout operator is the last person you can ask for help finding a product. By the time you’re face to face with a checkout operator, you have a trolley load of stuff on the conveyor belt and a line of impatient people behind you. The place to ask for help finding a product is the customer service desk, which many supermarkets conveniently locate OUTSIDE the store away from customers needing help.
      That aside, any effort to improve customer service, including communicating with customers effectively, is a good thing.

Peters’ interview with ‘James’ Tame this morning on Q+A is a must watch if you havent seen it. I recommend stocking up heavily on popcorn before watching. It reminded me so much of the Muldoon interview when he loses it for being blindsided.
I found myself agreeing with Tame that Peters is a corrupt, greasy slimeball. I found myself agreeing with Peters that TVNZ is a biased state funded media that misuse tax payer money to constantly pish their agenda.
Winnie was getting really shirty and kept calling Jack ‘James’. He also pulled out some of his favourite one liners such as ‘Philadelphia Lawyer’ and ‘not going to fight an unarmed opponent.’

Meanwhile where has Gerry gone? I get the impression that in the heat of the ‘take over’ of the National Parliamentary leadership on offer was the prize that Gerry would be deputy. No one appears to have a ‘hold on’ moment while it was thought about, now Gerry has become almost as invisible as Kelven after entertaining folks with deep questions and raising his eyebrows.
So what is left? From polling on TV1 last night the PM is ahead of JC by I think it was 62 to 28%. Hard to say that would or would not be narrower if Shane Reti had been deputy or higher because at a time when highest interest is in Covid he is highly informed – he has left those National members formerly on the Covid committee in his wake and did it without trying to punch below the belt.
The question is why was that not recognized earlier, how come no one put their finger on that point? Was it because National is not about the caucus and the party, but about ‘me,’ and what I did when ‘what’s his name’ was replaced.
Compare that to just over 3 years ago when the unpopular Little stepped aside and JA took over in an electric atmosphere among the young and middle NZers.
Is the answer that JC is too long in politics and her ship has sailed? Or is it ageism? Possibly not when considering the ages of Simon and Paula.
I think to answer that question is too look at the party leadership rather than the parliamentary leadership – “Merv,” and Goodfellow. The later seem to have their fingerprints and tiredness over every cock up this year.
It has to be said that the Labour President took no time in leaving over the most recent “sex” scandal, one in the fullness of time was incapable of fully holding water.

  Gerry is National’s campaign manager. I know with a large degree of certainty he is doing huge hours behind the scenes managing 60-plus electorate contests in conjunction with local campaign managers, and coordinating National’s Party Vote strategy.
  
  The only reason Judith Collins isn’t drawing big crowds to campaign events is because she’s not allowed to. She’s limited to ten people in Auckland, and 100 elsewhere. You’ll see the crowds turn up when/if we go back to Alert Level One.
  
  In the meantime, Collins has released a number of policies this week including education and child health announcements, and there are plenty more where those ones came from. The party is in great heart, and the delay in the election date combined with Covid restrictions has played into the Opposition’s hands.

    The restrictions are essentially political in aid of the waving arms and mouth campaign. Ardern is worn out and had to pay $50M to journalists to keep Judith Collins, the Crusher, at bay.

Being slight rugby obsessed I thought that final Super game of the season the Blues v Crusaders was possibly going to be the best rugby since the world cup.
Although we will never know the comparison the North, South game was a classic in the absence of the “unofficial” final where the Crusaders may have even decided to wager the trophy on the outcome.
Last nights game reminded me again of the question of why “shag” did not play Ben Smith in the AB’s semi at the last WC. Both fullbacks excelled last night but hard to say Ben was never a match or even better than them as he showed in his last AB’s game and many before that.

Was I dreaming, or did one of the media sites (Stuffed or Horrid) run a story yesterday about a local headmaster (Porirua, I recall) complaining how his school was a damp, mouldy, unhealthy mess. And asking the PM if she would send Neave to such a terrible school.
Now I’d have thought that it was a good story, worth following up, worth getting a reaction from the PM. But… can’t find it today.
Anyone know if it was dropped down the rabbit hole for obvious reasons?

Why is there always such an outcry and raucous demand for those who are trying to maintain law and order to be held to account?
Is it because they have no rights, other than those according to the relevant legislation?
No personal rights, no allowances for error, no acceptance of procedural mistakes, no angry voices or emotional outbursts.
How many people have to make decisions under the sort of mental, physical and public pressure that law and order personnel do?
They didn’t make the laws – they only have to try to interpret how they were intended to be applied.

Gosh Winston really made a complete fool.of himself today on Q&A. It was hilarious as he was getting more flustered by the minute. He called jack two different names several times. He refused to answer anything he was asked which made him look so guilty. Winston’s time is truly up, his cheese has slipped off his cracker!!!

I’m inclined to go with the theory that money printing is simply inflating house and asset prices — ie, enriching those who already have money.

Surely if they are going to print money, it would be better just to share it with everyone, including the poor.

I totally oppose money printing, but, since they are doing it they should at least distribute it fairly.

Oh my, I’ve just watched Jack Tame interviewing Peters on Q & A. What a train wreck!! However, despite my loathing for Peters I think that Jack Tame is just a jumped up, despicable, lefty. I wouldn’t mind if he interviewed everyone that way but with Cindy it’s all “Oh you are so lovely, oh you are so wonderful, your response is fantastic, we love you PM” blah, blah, blah. I have to agree with Peters on this one, Tame is a disgrace to journalism. Peters looked mighty rough, I have to say.

I finally did the TVNZ Compass survey today. Interesting to see that the centre of politics goes straight through the Labour Party policy and my own views are considered “Far Right”. I find that odd as I don’t have any issues whatsoever with immigration or ethnicity. I do not believe at all in race based policy which it seems to make me “Far Right”. Someone had better supply TVNZ with a dictionary. It is obvious this survey is rigged.

I have been watching Lockdown TV from Unherd since April. These are 30 minute interviews from across the spectrum of thinking on the matter of the Pandemic. Anders Tegnell and Ferguson have been interviewed. This one with Devi Sridhar, Chair of Global Public Health at the University of Edinburgh demonstrates that if you have a proper discourse you can really shed some light on how rigourous the logic behind peoples thinking and policy ideas are. I found it interesting that she is labelled as a Progressive Interventionalist who is seeking ZeroCovid and yet doesn’t believe in Lockdown.

I have noticed an increasing number of Kiwi’s are chiming in with their frustrations to these seqeunce of interviews (comments on this one are switched off) and feel the worldview that New Zealand has ‘got it right’ is more nuanced than is presented.

I thought you might be interested.
