Andrea Vance of Stuff had a lengthy article about how wrong it was to call the Prime Minister ‘Cindy’. Then Stuff in an article about the dissolution of Parliament referred to Her Excellency the Governor General as ‘Reddy’. Goodness knows what ‘style guide’ supports this usage. Referring to the Governor General and the Judiciary by surrnames only is plain disrespectful, especially when Stuff regards calling the PM Cindy is disrespectful. But then the PM influences how the $50M is doled out to the media while other groups do not have a say.

  You are sure on the money with that reasoning . . . “Stuff” would be “stuffed” without taxpayers’ subsidies as they do not have enough advertising revenue to cover overheads.
  Technically they must be insolvent, having no tangible assets, only goodwill; and that would be zilch.

    But not “Jen” nor “Bob” Muldoon, nor “Will” English – all acceptable variants that they didn’t appear to use themselves. Does Collins answer to “Judy” (I don’t know).
    
    That said, I can’t say I feel strongly about this issue one way or another, it all seems rather adolescent and petty.

  If Vance thinks that she hasn’t completely earned that in her dozen years in Parliament, then she’s deluding herself. Whaleoil was pointing out the similarity that her members bills bore to bumper-stickers years before she was a live leadership contender.

  She’s referring to the doll manufactured and distributed by Pedigree Dolls and Toys in the UK, from the early 1960’s. Produced as a rival to Barbie, the doll’s name was Sindy – not Cindy. Journalism 101, another fail from Andy Vance (or Bob, as we punters call her).

  Oh, Peter! I go away for a while, and when I come back, everything is exactly the same. You never change. In some ways it is heartening, in others it indicates a certain stodginess and unwillingness to change. But my main point… It has always been journalistic practice to refer to a person by their surname in articles, *provided they are named in full earlier in the article*. It is not a Stuff thing. Look at any news site or newspaper. If I were writing an article on Kiwiblog I might say “Kiwiblog is a blog site set up by David Farrar, and has mainly right wing subscribers. Farrar is a statistician and polster…” If the article in question refers to the GG as ‘Reddy’ before mentioning her name and title in full, then that would be disrespectful.

Does the current law covering medicinal use of cannabis deal only with manufactured products?

And, considering, to date, only one medicinal cannabis product has been approved, and it is not funded by Pharmac [1], does one have to consider voting for legalisation of recreational cannabis to get anything within a reasonable price range to combat, for example, chronic pain, and will that confine you then to largely cannabis biased to a stronger THC content (for a recreational high) rather than CBS (better targeted pain control)?

So, does someone on constant pain, have to balance that personal gain (self interest) against the social downsides – as yet inadequate road safety measures, for example – of changing recreational use?

And anybody who wrote a sentence like that is yet to be in constant pain, but I’m sure the time will come, just like Cullen’s who was against euthanasia until the cancer was in his bones, and just like all the good little pro-life housewives who nip down to the abortion clinic when they have an accidental whoopsie, where your hypocrisy will seem excusable.

  Similar but different, I nearly got into trouble with this when I moved from the US to Canada. Suffice it to say I run a core facility with analytical stuff in it. In the US, only THC is (/was depending on individual states) illegal, all other derivatives can be used in research. In Canada, up until legalization, all derivatives were illegal, not just for consumption but even for research purposes. Anyway, I’d been in charge about 6 mo and got asked by a researcher to get our tech to run up a protocol for CBD – went to order the standards and… came to a screaming halt. You see the researcher themselves have the permits (24 months to get back then), but the Analytical Facility would also need the permits in order to analyze.
  
  It’s all water under the bridge now since all forms of cannabis are legal in Canada – medical adn recreational.
  
  BTW – latest stats in BC is that there was an uptick in usage in the last [almost] 2 years from 17% population usage to 19%. Driven by the 18 – 39 age-group. The only problem we saw was that the BC Govt. was hugely slow in their licensing (like 1 shop in Victoria, 1 in Kamloops adn 2 in Van) for almost 9 months, also the Govt. website had junk product… so the black market hung round for a while, but its dying now that the pot shops are opening more and over wider area [correctly licensed].

    PS Haven’t solved the DUI (what you guys call DIC) problem yet. For various pharmacokinetics (they change with dose and consumption – bane of any testing) and biomarker (we don’t have a reliable on in breath, blood or urine like alcohol) reasons it’s a hell of a thorny problem.

So, the concerns raised by Hamish Walker, in looking after his constituents, that having an isolation facility in Southland and no resources to deal with an outbreak have proven true.
The appalling comment from Megan Woods that Walker’s concerns were ‘racist’ was purely to distract focus from the continual cock-ups at the isolation facilities. Woods needs to front up and justify her ‘racist’ label in light of the latest info on where a key source of the virus is coming from.

Just who are the “people” who are talking about Matariki? Its called interviewing your typewriter or nattering to your fellow journalists. The arrogance and stupidity knows no bounds.

Any journalist with an ounce of integrity and decency would be extolling Collins for tackling a huge thorny issue and be pointing out how vacuous and damaging another public holiday will be on jobs and the economy.

  Well, there’s a thread about it on this very blog which as at 8:54 am today has 109 comments on it, so there’s part of your answer. There are also three comments about it under “General Debate” and none about National’s policy on methamphetamine.
  
  The media respond to the signals they get from the public, and the signals are very clearly that the public are more interested in quick, easily understood soundbites than tackling deep, thorny issues for which the only way forward is a long, difficult struggle requiring huge reserves of patience, persistence and money and unlikely to show results within a single electoral cycle, let alone within the couple of weeks that public interest can, at best, usually be sustained for.
  
  That being said, I’ve also had a look at Stuff’s and the Herald’s coverage of National’s announcement and I do not think National have anything to complain of there.

‘On Sunday, Atlantic Editor in Chief Jeffrey Goldberg admitted the White House’s account that President Trump’s trip to a cemetery of fallen World War I soldiers in France in 2018 was modified due to bad weather is probably accurate.

“I’m sure all of those things are true,” Goldberg told CNN in an interview on Friday when asked to respond to evidence a story he published saying otherwise is false.’
And an eyewitness account from someone who was there;
‘Former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Zach Fuentes unequivocally denied The Atlantic’s report last week, a huge blow to the establishment media narrative. Fuentes personally briefed President Trump on the weather situation that led to the trip being canceled. He is also a close personal confidante of former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.

“You can put me on record denying that I spoke with The Atlantic,” Fuentes said on Monday. “I don’t know who the sources are. I did not hear POTUS call anyone losers when I told him about the weather. Honestly, do you think General Kelly would have stood by and let ANYONE call fallen Marines losers?”

        It was transparently false when published about the cancellation because of the weather – the NYT doubted that fact back in 2018 and did an FOIA request for confirmation. They did indeed get a response showing that the weather was the cause of the cancellation, and that a road trip was not considered secure. So the information was in the public domain, yet the Atlantic published a story that largely hinged on that as the introduction to the narrative about Trump’s alleged comments. That’s malicious behaviour, and thoroughly despicable, and yet Mikey ties himself to it.
        
        Plus they emphasised the allegation that Trump didn’t want to stand in the rain, yet next day he did exactly that, for an hour. They were obviously confusing Trump with pusillanimous and craven Obama who always had other people standing in the rain to provide shelter for him.
        
        So a simple orchestrated smear, that should and does reflect very badly on those who not only organised it but those who repeated it. Are we going to see apologies from those people for disrespecting the troops. Because the net effect is that they are the ones calling the fallen losers and suckers.
        
        So here we have a special post on KB about this, and it has completely collapsed already. How come all the TDS sufferers are so unendingly gullible and ready to accept any transparent smear ?

It’s even worse than the “end of times” climate propaganda.

    Houses last a long time and we don’t know what the future will hold, but right now there aren’t that many people buying homes who don’t own a car. It seems more practical to have a garage or parking space that can be converted to an extra room or garden in future if we decide we don’t need a car.
    
    The sensible statist solution is to compel developers to provide a carpark. I’m a libertarian so I would just solve it by charging people to park in the street.

        If you don’t charge people to park in the street you are letting them privatise the gain from a cheaper home and socialise the cost of finding somewhere to park. If you do charge for street parking, I expect buyer demand for off street parking space would be significantly higher, probably high enough that developers would seldom choose to build without it.

Having said that, the better approach would be to control the use of that public property by charging for parking, with preferential (but not free) access to residents. That way the individuals themselves, rather than everybody else, have to bear the responsibility and consequences of their own individual decision to buy a house without a parking space.

Annually needed proof of habitation (power/phone/water bill with name and address) and sent the council $100. Prior to that the med students would drive in and park for the day, so if I left my house by car for any reason, I’d never get a park when I got back.

So Kiwibank is closing the account of someone because that person is dealing with medicinal cannabis. Now I thought one of the reasons Kiwibank was set up was to provide basic banking services to those shunned by the Big Four banks (at the height of Rogernomics there was a real risk that poor people would be unable to open any bank account). In today’s society a basic bank account and EFTPOS card is a basic necessity. The only alternative would be for WINZ to issue its own EFTPOS card to enable people to access benefits The Responsible Minister should tell Kiwibank to pull its horns in on this one.

A Government edict to Kiwibank to provide a basic banking service (current account and EFTPOS card) would be a justifiable policy decision the Government could impose on Kiwibank. If it is claimed that this is an ‘operational’ matter then why the hell is Kiwibank continuing as a Government entity – Bill English was right – it should be sold off. Notice how the Police Chief blamed the attack on covid restrictions and tensions and how the police and media gave no physical description of the thug apart from what he was wearing? The fact that he was black and the murder victim was a white man have, of course, nothing to do with the police and media collusion. Now let’s just speculate about the media coverage had the killer been white and the victim black…

I say again, targeted health funding (or indeed any sort of funding) should be based on need, not ‘race’.

The WHO chief did not act on Taiwan’s early tip-off of the pandemic emerging in Wuhan.

The organisation follows Beijing in refusing to treat Taiwan as a nation.

Has Jacinderella ever mentioned Taiwan when she talks of NZ’s record on Wuhan flu? Taiwan has recently recorded four new cases, all in people arriving from abroad, bringing its total cases in the pandemic to 494, with seven deaths. Taiwan has 23.7 million people.

The outstanding part of its efforts in containing Wuhan flu is its success in keeping businesses running and schools open.

    We don’t dine out that frequently these days but I struggle to recall exceptional service. I do recall exceptional food so have sought out the chef for a chat and a thankyou. Even just a thanks over the counter seems appreciated. Works especially well at those roadside stalls in BK 😉

Bloody shame about that girl killing herself with paracetamol, but it looks to me that the proposed package reduction is unlikely to help in this particular case.

Paracetamol gets to be fatal around 10 grams or so (ie. 20 standard tablets). It is one of the most commonly used suicide ODs. Many countries limit the number of tablets per package/transaction for this reason – the theory being that if the person buys smaller packages then they are less likely to have many tabs available and have to go to more shops to buy a fatal dose. This gives the potential suicider a bit more time to think about things and reduces impulsive behaviour.

Studies indicate that this strategy might work to reduce suicides.

There was also a similar motivation for moving from bottles to blister packs. Chugging a bottle of tabs can be done in a second on impulse, but splitting out 20+ tabs from a blister pack requires a bit more time and deliberate effort – maybe enough for sense to prevail.

But in this case, the coroner has ruled is was not suicide, so in this case would the smaller packaging really help?

I see that the reduced package size is still a potentially fatal dose. If they really want to do this then perhaps they should reduce the sizes further.

It is hard for me to get too worried about gang associates sorting each other out, but the dudge in this case really lives in an ivory tower bubble.

Webber:
1) Stabbed the victim to death with many stabbings.
2) Failed to show any real remorse.
3) Is an enforcer with many convictions.

Dudge refuses to give a final strike warning because he thinks it might interfere with parole the chances of Weber turning his life around and going straight.

Dream on sunshine. This guy will be back in the dock within 2 years of being paroled. He will be a repeat customer until either he does get a long sentence or, more likely, someone cleans him up instead.

Probable = 99 (5.57%)
Possible = 159 (8.95%)

93.2% were aged 65 or over.

Average age of “covid deaths” = 82

Average life expectancy in Ireland = 82

  The MoH data on COVID deaths is given in 5 year age groups, but the average could actually be higher than 82, if the deaths have tended to be at the higher end of each age group. The range is 76-84.

  It’s an argument that can use the same stats for different outcomes. The real question is the extent to which covid-19 accelerated death in patients with comorbidities. If, as seems likely, it is on average a few months, then while covid-19 has caused the death as much as any of the other conditions, it is simply not the spectre we have been led to believe.

Ok, so here’s another one of those mawkish celebrity/influencer “stories” now being paraded on $tuff.
Yeah, yeah – i opened it. But only because of the unbelievable heading about being kind is better than being right – which is the direct opposite of what we were told at journalism school.
The article is a list of a whole lot of things you might want to know about actor Rebecca Gibney.
Then, in the middle of it, up pops a super photo of Rebecca and Jacinda all girlfriends together.
This is the third or fourth now of so-called news stories unrelated to politics where the Prime Minister just suddenly appears – electioneering.
Whoever thought up this strategy – well done. You are getting away with it.

Australian correspondents Bill Birtles and Mike Smith pulled out of China after five-day diplomatic standoff over national security case

The ABC and the Australian Financial Review have rushed their correspondents out of China after police demanded interviews with both journalists, resulting in an extraordinary diplomatic standoff.

The saga began early last week, when Australian diplomats in Beijing cautioned Birtles that he should leave China, with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade giving the same advice to ABC’s managing director David Anderson in Sydney.

But the threatening behaviour from Chinese officials peaked before he could leave, when seven police officers arrived at Birtles’ apartment at midnight last Wednesday as he was holding farewell drinks with friends and colleagues. They told him he was banned from leaving the country, and that he would be contacted the next day to organise a time to be questioned over a “national security case”.

Last week China confirmed that a high-profile Australian television anchor for the Chinese Government’s English news channel, CGTN is being held under “residential surveillance at a designated location”. This is apparently a form of detention in which “investigators can imprison and question a suspect for up to six months while cutting them off from lawyers and the outside world — all before they have even been formally arrested”.

So, despite China’s protestations to the contrary, it appears that Australian citizens are at risk of arbitrary detention in China.

This is yet another reason why name suppression should be removed.
In a couple of years these 3 pieces of shit will be back on the streets and nobody will be any the wiser.
And when they re-offend the same thing will happen, the judge will look the other way and the parole board, as usual, will make a wrong decision.
So much wrong here, and it just repeats ad infinitum.

Just spent the afternoon working at one of my key clients.
They have lost, due to this inept govt.s response to Covid19, 80% of their business and to spite the wage subsidy, have had to lay off half their workers and mothball 2/3 of their machines…managers are on 20 hours per week.

Well, at least the guy had a relationship with a female. That is good.
As an aside, I went to high school up north in the 1960s, and one of our male teachers became involved with a senior female student. I don’t think anything came of it. Nobody gave it the attention it gets these days.
