Last night, while watching television I was suddenly, until I could reach for and activate the remote, subjected to a god-awful ugly talking head telling blatant lies by advising me it had gone hard, quickly.

Now that may describe the actions of a certain Labour party youth camp attendee but nothing else -the country’s borders are still f@#king open to all except, of course, those who could benefit New Zealand.

It did, however, get me thinking – no easy feat at any time 😉

After noting both main parties opening forays the one thing that stands out is that all of them have completely forgotten that politicians are elected to serve the people. To work for the the populace, not to get some of the populace, the net tax payers, to work for them.

Maybe it’s time to follow the advice given to me years ago by my elderly neighbour, fire the lot of them and put a married couple in to run the joint.

      What is the point of your endless negativity. Are we just supposed to give up, and let the catastrophe of a Labour/Greens government engulf us (with emphasis on the Greens part). The only thing that saved us from a disaster this time was the New Zealand First handbrake; the current government was therefore only mostly useless and somewhat regressive. BTW, it is swallowing a huge dead rat for me to say something nice about NZF as I have despised Winston Peters for over 30 years.
      
      Some of us are going to keep fighting and arguing for rational, economically and morally sound government which will only come from a National/ACT coalition government.

    flu – whuru, ukulele – ukurere, coffee – kawhe,
    aeroplane – aropereina, scissors – kutikuti,
    shoes – hu, cow – kau, pen – pene,
    piano – piana, supermarket – hokomaha,
    There are no maori words for quite a few common English words eg cheque book, bare feet, footpath, traffic lights
    So ignoring the maori language and just treating it as the stoneage relic it is, is the sensible thing to do.

  It’s a made-up language greybeard. Such a thing as a week wouldn’t have existed in the Stone Age so they are having to invent words left, right and centre.
  
  I’m also getting very tired of the Maori language being dotted in amongst English especially on TV. Our children are going to be speaking pidgin English instead of our beautiful language. And I’m starting to dislike ‘Aotearoa’ very much as it is used everywhere and we all know what they are trying to do – get us so used to it that when they decide to rename our country all the people who hear it everywhere will agree. Except me of course. Hopefully I’m long gone when that happens because it will, mark my words.

    All languages “make up” and borrow words, Unity. There weren’t words for a lot of things around you 100-200 years ago. English is no exception (in fact, its love of adopting and combining words from other languages, existing and ancient, are what helps give it such a rich vocabulary – need a new word, chuck together a couple from classical Latin, or even Greek – “tele” “vision” – seeing from afar – yeah that sounds good).
    It’s what languages do.

      I know language evolves and we all obtain words from elsewhere but when you think back to 1840 and what little Maori had, most of their language has had to be ‘made up’. They were Stone Age people so whereas English takes in new words all the time, Maori has had to be basically ‘made up’ because their lives and what they had were so simple when the colonists came. Also, because the tribes came from many different places, and were not a cohesive race of people, they have had to also take the differences into account. They have even now changed the way words are pronounced to how they were said way back in the times.

        Well, that hasn’t been transparent.
        Anyway, you seem to running an odd double standard. When English needs new words because of meeting new cultures, environments or technology, it does so by borrowing words (e.g., verandah, pyjamas, cot, dinghy), combining words in new ways (e.g., floppy disk, software), or combining words from old languages (e.g., television). That you call “takes in new words”.
        When Maori does exactly the same thing, it is “made up”.
        All languages do this sort of thing, there is nothing odd about it (from memory, the French actually have some sort of government agency to try to minimise this pervasive effect).

      You could as easily say “Made all the worse because much of what passes as English is not consistent from North to South in the UK.” Familiar with “Pygmalion” or “My Fair Lady”?
      Why are you insisting on a linguistic purity in Maori while you happily accept the diversity in accent, pronunciation, vocabulary, and even grammar I suspect, that forms what we happily call English throughout the world?

      I see I’m right about changing the name of our country. After my post it came through the media that the Maori Party will be campaigning on changing the name of our country. I do hope many of you will stand by the name we all love and respect – e.g. New Zealand.
      
      Getting back to the Maori language, you can’t compare it with English or the many other languages because with the extreme simplicity of their lives back a couple of centuries ago, they needed such few words because they didn’t have anything much to name in the first place. So, you can’t compare it with the other languages which covered many words way back in those times – including the wheel.

  To be fair, when my grandfather was a lad, the word “motorway”, if it existed at all in English, would have had a different meaning, and it’s constructed by putting two existing words together (“motor” + “way”) in much the way some modern Maori words are constructed. Actually, there’s more of that in English than we notice – waterfall, wheelbarrow, railway, bicycle (just means “two wheels”), and so on.
  
  As I think about it, I imagine an simple sentence such as “I drove my motorcycle to the mall to get a new cellphone” would have been pretty much incomprehensible in the 1800s.

    True enough, but almost certainly incomprehensible because those entities didn’t exist, not that the words would not be understood. Mall certainly was, the place Pall Mall for example; and cycle was known (widely so in the late 1800’s) and a motor cycle could be comprehended but probably not imagined as engines then were steam powered and even the smallest essentially too large for a cycle. Though the first motorised cycle (3 wheeler) from Daimler was produced in 1885. Cellphone I’ll give you as the concept of remote communications was limited to telegraph and later “wireless” radio transmissions; “phone” even as shorthand for telephone was not until 1876 with Bell’s first conversation. Probably though a “cellphone” was a jailhouse communications device.

      Let’s face it, Ed, for all your protestations that sentence would have been word salad to someone in 1850. Language evolves – we don’t rely on the vocabulary of 1840 now – everyday words today, like “escalator”, would mean something very different to most people then (if it had any meaning at all).

    I get it – language evolves over time but I’ll say it again – Maori lives were absolutely simple way back in the 18th and 19th centuries so their language would be miniscule especially compared to other languages around the World which would have had a vast number of words even at that time. So, since the colonists came with not only the wheel but many other things at that time, Maori language has had to be invented. They would never have understood our language which was vast even in the 19th century and they would have had no words for the many things the colonists had or would talk about. So, whether people like it or not, Maori today is a made-up language. They wouldn’t have even been able to put two or three words together, like we do, to make up a name for something new because there wouldn’t have been an original name for some part of it in the first place.
    
    This is sounding rather convoluted but hopefully it will make sense.

      Why not? I can imagine someone’s first exposure to a musket in action, say, might generate “fire stick” or “fire spear” – which sounds odd, but isn’t much different from the acceptable English word firearm.

  The articles right about one thing. The need for the news cycle to change every hour rather than once a day means you need tons of filler stories like Chloe Swarbrick and her couch. and real stories about things that matter disappear from the front page in a couple of hours as well.

    The Swarbrick puff-pieces are anything but filler. They are there for a reason, to keep her name in the news for voter recognition purposes.
    
    Same with the not-so-subtle references to other things the left media loves, for example in the Stuff quiz they’ll ask questions such as: Labour has promised to make what day a public holiday if they are re-elected?

      NZ Herald are not known for reporting the truth.

      Not lab made as such, but modified as part of an experimental program on enhanced function. This type of research does occur – scientists modify existing viruses to try to understand how they infect people (or other organisms).
      
      This used to be conducted in the USA but around 2016/17 that was ended over concerns of the risks of an accidental release. Much of the research was transferred to Chinese run labs including the Wuhan lab.
      
      I have seen earlier reports that the pattern of mutations in the original Covid virus was too unnatural and thus it was likely a modified in the lab creation. The key was comparing the early samples to the supposed precursor Rat-13G.
      
      Natural mutations should show certain statistical patterns – just as an example one in every 4 bases in the RNA has no affect on the amino acid coded for and so the mutation rate for these bases is different to those in the coding sections. The mutation rate in the Covid samples did not follow that pattern, and in addition one of the proteins made by the virus NOT related in infectivity showed almost no mutations at all, not even the inevitable random ones that accumulate at a certain rate in all viruses.
      
      Now, I haven’t seen further follow up to that paper so maybe the results are not solid, but maybe this is the same sort of evidence that this Chinese virologist is talking about. Hard to prove absolutely, but quite possible to infer as a reasonable conclusion from independent genetic data.
      
      Indeed be interesting to see what comes out. No doubt the Chinese have an extreme interest in suppressing or undermining any such evidence. Conversely some others have a stake in seeing Chinese malfeasance displayed; one can hope that we get to see the true origin revealed.

    The Chinese claim that the closest relative to Covid is the Rat-13G virus, isolated in 2013 in 4 workers engaged in clearing bat guano from a mine in SW China. One problem is that no samples exist, only a genetic code recorded in files, which after all is just a sequence of letters which *could* have been created.
    
    Also, the Covid-19 virus has two quite distinct modifications in the spike protein, both of which are critical to its hugely enhanced infectivity, and both of which must have occurred more or less at the same time in a very short time frame. And those changes are both “known” sequences in other viruses where they promote infectivity.
    
    It is not impossible that the virus is natural, but neither is it improbable that the virus is in fact a lab modified virus created to study gain of function (so by no means nefarious in intention) which accidentally escaped from a lab known to be carrying out this exact sort of study on the exact sort of virus.
    
    And it is indeed useful to know what happened.

      I’ve seen several videos of this incident. First a Police car deliberately runs into the man, knocking him back several meters to the ground. Later four Police try to subdue the man, which is when an officer with his back to the camera stomps on the man’s head, with some degree of force. There’s also a suggestion that another of the officers kicks the man while he is lying on the ground. It’s sheer, unadulterated brutality, and an absolute disgrace.

  I know a watercare engineer who when I asked him about this fiasco said, the levels have dropped to very low levels in the dam because there was a miscalculation, and watercare let the water out of the dam at the wrong time. They dump the water at a certain as it gets too full …so it’s actually their own fault we are in a crisis.

They should focus on how they would do a better job of borders as well as the recovery. We have a proven track record, a better team etc.

Boy has Garner gone feral against Ardern. Once upon a time, many on here accused Garner of being a closet leftie, but his attacks on Ardern and Labour suggest he is anything but. The funny thing watching the AM Show in the morning, is Ruby Lips. She just doesn’t know what to say these days, being in between Garner and Richardson.

This morning Garner went full nuclear over the failure of the government to support NZ Rugby over the hosting of the Rugby Championship. Garner questioned where were the benefits of “the going hard, and going early”, if all we’ve got is a financial hole. He raised the question of where was the plan to get us out of it and Richardson added (unquestioned) that Ardern didn’t have a plan to get us out of the hole.

It does nothing else, it certainly makes better viewing than watching John Campbell.

  What is so special about opening the borders for rugby fans?
  
  Jim Boult would quite reasonably make a case for Aussie skiers. Orchardists want RSEs. Arable farmers want harvester drivers. Dairy farmers want their work visa managers back. Unis want their foreign students. Campervan companies want someone to rent their fleet at a reasonable price.
  
  Perhaps we should just do what we can to shelter oldies and otherwise ignore covid and get on with life. “Just a flu” for the non-oldies. Don’t waste money on testing and contact tracing and stuff if we aren’t going to do anything with the info.
  
  Aside from locking up retirement villages I’n not sure what “sheltering the oldies” means. FWIW I am 75, reasonably healthy AFAIK and I live with my wife in the house in PN that we have occupied for the last 40 years.

      Financial hole from losing tourism int students was some tens of billions. GDP = a bit under $300bn and the hole was 15-20% of that. Call it $50bn I guess. About the same as what a foot and mouth outbreak would do to the dairy industry.

      Forestry – $6bn in the year to Feb 2020. 48% going to China. China turned all that off in Jan. Nobody’s fault really.
      
      The outbreak of coronavirus forced the shut-down of restaurants in China in the middle of Chinese New Year celebrations in late January. – I forget where I found this.

        Personally agree generally with both posts. Aged care facilities are in effect under L4 conditions “mandated” by the industry ( not government) and given today’s decision will most likely remain so for quite a while. For the rest of us oldies it is simply personal responsibility as to how we avoid infection, something most on this site actually do understand I think, despite a “bit” of rhetoric to the contrary.
        
        Your latter post re F&M set off another train of thought for me however, mainly as I spent many years in that industry. How come NZ for it’s economic survival has successfully quarantined that virus “humanely” for animals entering this country for decades longer than I have lived, yet we cannot seem to do it for humans for a few months/maybe a year odd?
        To me the answer is fairly simple. The systems required are well established, proven and obviously effective. The difference is that for some reason our current government can’t distinguish that the difference between treating animals in isolation “humanely” and people in isolation “humanly” is too difficult and would cost some additional $s that for their political reasons they consider better placed elsewhere. So much for love and kindness.
        
        Finally FWIW while having disagreed with some of your logic arguments circa mid seventies AFAIK 🙂 on various matters, your premise re rugby has an incorrect base assumption so I’ll repeat my prior argumentative behavior. The issue here is not incoming risk from fans but the unwillingness of a government (and bureaucrats) to be pragmatic and recognize that no one size fits all in respect to quarantine group size. I hardly think that the corporate employers of the players are going to risk their investment by allowing breaches that destroy the return they expect to receive and the NRL in Aus already provides examples. We are not all rugby fans but the country as a whole loses out on an economic and “well being” level.

    Tourism was headed to a hole regardless of what we did…other countries were already in lock down….ie no tourists to come.
    What it would have done.
    1. Kept the rest of the economy OPEN!!
    2. Kept the disease away for 4-6months, while we prepared for the inevitable arrival of returning NZers that we would have had to take.

The project, which began in 2006, involved pumping sand into giant “geotextile” bags to create a wave-making reef at Opunake Beach.
Budget of $1.1m, blew out to $2m, with South Taranaki District Council losing $1.5m to the development.
TRC resource management director said “Council has so far spent $10,000 on divers to assess the reef’s current state.”
Bag fragments have been removed and a bag removal method successfully trialled.

  Salmond, a professor in the soft “science” of anthropology, has made a career of Maori studies, and this shows she’s also at least a sympathiser of the Woke/Cancellation/BLM movement.
  
  This gives her free, 24-hour pass to the State media: Radio NZ, TVNZ, and the State-subsidised print media.
  
  Wikipedia tells us Salmond’s Ph.D. thesis at the University of Pennsylvania was titled “Hui – a study of Maori ceremonial gatherings.”
  
  Of course, Salmond would want Maori studies pushed to the top of the university tree.
  
  Salmond’s diatribe is further evidence of pressure to Maorify our universities, which are institutions at the core of Western learning.
  
  The pressure for Otago Medical School to let preferential low-marks entry for Maori be uncapped is another indication of what’s happening.
  
  Because of physical limitations, uncapped low-marks entry must mean eventually such students must gradually swamp the school, and thus destroy its standards.
  
  Meanwhile, what of wananga? These three taxpayer-funded tertiary institutions were set up to provide for Maori knowledge, and approaches to learning.
  
  Isn’t Maorification of universities thus a strategy of what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is at least half mine?

    Many are subtly influencing people think the move to cap preferential entry to Otago Medical School is a cap on numbers of Maori and ethnic Pacific Islanders who can train for doctors. That’s a lie. The core of the issue is special low-marks entry.
    
    An example of the distortion is the headline on the NZ Herald web site:
    
    Otago University staffer claims
    senior leadership tried to push
    medical admissions caps
    
    The move would restrict the numbers of these ethnic groups who can gain preferential entry with lower marks than those required ofAsian or white or African students.
    
    Maori and Pacific Islands students could still gain entry by passing at or above the normal pass-mark cut-off.
    
    There are physical and financial limits on how many students can be trained. So eventually, uncapped low-marks entry must reduce standards by squeezing out brighter non-Maori, non-Pacific Islander candidates.
    
    Brighter Maori and Pacific Islander students who would have gained entry even without low-marks preference would then also suffer from lower standards at the Medical School.

      Jack5 has properly identified the issue. I know Kiwibloggers have trouble with the Maori and Pasifica admissions schemes but they are here to stay.
      The problem at Otago is that the advocates want no cap to the scheme. That is, the Medical School would admit every Maori or Pasifica student whose marks are below the normal cutoff. Effectively ahead of everyone else. It could result in virtually the entire entrant class having marks below the normal cutoff.
      Otago already has a very generous preferential Maori and Pasifica admission scheme. Already 20% of the intake are Maori and about 10% are Pasifica. Not all would have needed to use the scheme, but many will have.
      In my view the University has to resist the pressure from the advocates to uncap the scheme. Will they be able to do so?

Re Chloe and her couch. She says it’s the most valuable thing she owns. Really? Does she not have a Kiwisaver account? Her MP salary is $160 000. So a minimum of 3% from her and the employer contribution of 2% (3% less FBT) is 5%. So at minimum after 3 years her balance would be about $24 000 plus IRD rebate plus earnings. Much more than the couch, and then she may be involved in the Green’s own super scheme. So saying the couch is the most expensive thing she owns could very well be untrue. There are only three reasons someone says something that is untrue. Malice, delusion or ignorance. I leave it to readers to decide which applies, but at the very least she displays a lack of financial comprehension that is alarming in an MP.

        I still own 100% of my Kiwisaver just like every other person in KS. Your comment doesn’t make sense. Yes it has reduced in value but I still own it. And as such its an asset that would appear on a balance sheet…….to be an asset it doesn’t have to be something you have to be able to touch (or sit on). Not everyone’s most valuable thing they own is their house even, maybe they own more in shares or Royalties.

    Modelling is what you use when you don’t have data or can’t be bothered getting actual data.
    
    Plan A: – Researcher. Objective Research Method.
    a) Test for Anti-bodies to establish infection rate.
    b) Establish baseline moralities, including co-morbidities, then objectively compare with new data.
    
    Plan B: – Arm Chair theorist. Lazy Man Method.
    a) Don’t leave your office or do any actual work. Apply for a handout to do your ‘research’.
    b) Create spreadsheet after spreadsheet all based on assumptions made without actual data. Usually copied from someone’s work.
    
    There is a reason why educational high school exams / projects/ tertiary science degrees used to insist on the following:
    
    a) Don’t assume. Carry out the research. Don’t just copy some else’s testing. Include copies of research and testing with your submission. Cheating results in a fail.
    b) Show your working out i.e. how you arrived at the conclusions. Having the right answer but no working out, results in a fail.
    
    I’m not sure what passes for educational science these days, but it is not scientific methodology.

  But, someone’s having a laugh, surely? Please tell me we have a new April Fools Day in September and I’m the only numpty who hasn’t realised.
  
  Surely they can’t be serious with these policy points:
  
  – Change New Zealand’s name to Aotearoa by 2026.
  – Replace all Pākeha place names, cities and towns to their orignal Māori ingoa by 2026.
  – Invest $50 million into the establishment of a Māori standards authority; an independent statutory entity whose role will be to audit all public service departments against cultural competency standards, including the monitoring and auditing of language plans.
  – Establish Te Marama o te reo Māori.
  – Double Te Mātāwai funding ($28 million).
  – Remunerate primary and secondary schools and kaiako based on their competency of Te Reo Māori.
  – Ensure that Te Reo Māori and Māori history are core curriculum subjects up to year 10.
  – Invest $40 million for early childhood to secondary school kaiako to develop their reo.
  – Require all primary schools to incorpoate Te Reo Māori into 25 per cent of their curriculum by 2026 and 50 per cent by 2030.
  – Invest $20 million into the development of Te Reo Māori resources.
  – Require all state funded broadcasters (workforce) across all mediums to have a basic fluency level of Te Reo Māori.
  
  Change our country’s name, and ALL place names? Remunerate primary and secondary schools and kaiako (whatever the hell they are) based on their competency of Te Reo Māori?
  
  Require all primary schools to incorporate Te Reo Māori into 25 per cent of their curriculum by 2026 and 50 per cent by 2030. What the hell?! That’s nuts. This is just batsh!t crazy. Do they seriously expect maths, science and – ahem – English to be taught half in Maori? How stupid.

    There was a report published recently (on Stuff or NZH, I’ll see if I can dig it out) that said 47% of NZ youngsters leave school with the reading and numeracy levels of 12 year olds or lower.
    
    That’s right. Nearly half of our kids leave school with reading and maths levels of 12 year olds, or worse!!!!!
    
    And this is the response of the Maori Party?
    
    These people aren’t just stupid, they are a menace. And that goes for the Greens too. They are just as reckless and foolhardy.

    Oh dear, the unions don’t allow that sort of thing. Everyone’s equal don’t you know, and any differences are accidental and not to the credit (or detriment) of the teacher or teaching establishment. To do otherwise would be admitting that some teachers are better than others, and you know there’s no such thing.
    
    Having never heard of the term before, Google advises me that a kaiako is a teacher which is of course mildly interesting for someone who’s into that sort of thing to know, but I am not particularly into that sort of thing and would prefer to be able to understand what you mean by means of you using English words, or at least words in one language. If you choose that language to be other than English, I’ll understand it very well in French and passingly in Dutch, Spanish, German and Italian. So I’m into languages, albeit exclusively ones useful in the world.

  Labour is also going to change the country’s name to Aotearoa. This will be done next term. It is going to be done in stages like Mt Cook/Aoraki was which is now become Aoraki/Mt Cook. It will slowly be introduced internationally. Aotearoa will become the legal name internally. The name New Zealand will disappear almost immediately within the country. You will NOT be asked about this. The Maori Party is just being honest. Years of brainwashing in the schools will ensure that this is ‘all good’.

        The same thing has happened with Housing New Zealand. It is now called Kainga Ora.
        
        My daughter was looking into the first home buyer’s grant – we Googled it and it took us to the Kainga Ora site. We had no idea what it was, or what it meant. We ended up Googling the name to find out if this was genuine.
        
        Whereas the name “Housing New Zealand” gives you a pretty good idea what its about.
        
        Madness.
        
        Oh, and if they’re hoping this will encourage people to use the Maori terms in everyday conversation, they can think again. We just continued to use the terms first home buyer’s grant or Housing New Zealand, because funnily enough, everybody knows what you’re talking about.

Today they have leaked there is one new case associated with the cluster, and no new border cases. Let’s see if they are right. They have been right every day so far. Someone in govt or MOH is leaking, they must be as brassed off as we all are, oh dear, how sad, never mind.

Great article in “Lockdown Sceptics” pointing out that the false positive rate for Covid testing, at about 2%, is roughly the same as the percentage of positive tests reported in the UK.

I saw a job advertised in maori, had no idea what the job was but on checking, everyone in the company had a maori title .

  I’ve made this point a few times in the past but it’s worth repeating because it’s perhaps the only way you can oppose the insidious attempt to change our nation’s name without being called racist … the word “Aotearoa” looks too similar to the word “Australia” (type them immediately above and below each other on a word document and you’ll see what I mean).
  
  Many of us fret about the fact that our national flags look too alike. How would we like to further confuse the issue by having a similar looking name too?
  
  And yes, I have no problems distinguishing between “Australia” and “Austria” either. But those two countries are far apart on a map of the world. Australia and New Zealand – not so much.

Fuck no, the isolation centres need to move to remote locations. And if there isn’t enough berths, then people have to wait overseas until there is a place for them.

  From what I can figure out there has been two cases in the community of people picking up the bug via the border and one of them spreading it from there. The bloke who worked in the cool store.
  Unfortunately the bug found its way into the Evangelical church in Mt Roskill and those people thought God would sort it out.

I notice Ardern seized the opportunity of her 1pm ‘address the nation’ announcement to tell more lies about what this Govt has done for Dunedin.
Putting aside the lies that we now expect from her, are there no checks in NZ, when the PM seizes the airwaves to make an ‘important announcement’, to stop hr from blatant electioneering ? If Parties’ ads are regulated and monitored, shouldn’t this be extended to people misusing their power in this way ? Could the Broadcasters remind Ardern that this is an election period, and she is abusing her office ?
I’ve never seen a more corrupt PM, and a more impotent collection of ‘checks and balances’.
We are an embarrassment to democracy.
