        I stain [sic] my beard with henna (can be purchased at many Asian grocers).
        
        Henna is essentially one colour, completely natural and permanent until the hair grows out 🙂
        
        It makes a real mess and takes time but I think it’s worth it.
        
        I’ve hennad my beard, hair and eyebrows for about 7 years now. DON’T USE CHEMICAL DYES!!!

Tens of millions to be spent by Labour in tackling the root causes of rheumatic fever. Good idea. That funding is on top of existing funding.

Addressing the root causes apparently involves providing curtains, heaters, bedding, beds, mould kits and more. Plus a handy $16 million for clipboard warriors to check on rental properties. (That’s a lot of public servants.)

Is overcrowding a root cause? These experts seem to think so.

Professor of Health Michael Baker –

“It is a disease we shouldn’t have. If we were housing all young Māori and Pacific children in uncrowded housing we could make a big dent in the rates of disease.”

“University of Otago public health professor Philippa Howden-Chapman said overcrowding was the single biggest housing-related cause of poor mental and physical health.”

Not one mention in Labour’s press release (link below) about overcrowding. Curtains, though. So what has Labour done, or propose to do, about overcrowding?

Some random impertinent questions.

Will the clipboard warriors be checking that the number of occupants do not exceed the maximum number in the tenancy agreement?
And require landlords to evict down to the maximum level?
Will the clipboard warriors do the same to social housing?
Who will be checking occupancy of homes that are owned, not rentals?
Will Labour be relying on more social housing and RMA reform to deal with housing and rental shortages, hence overcrowding? (Good luck with that.)

  They should also provide some contraception as it’s about families with many kids all living in the same house. Too many people crammed together in one house. It’s simply unwise to keep popping kids out when you cannot afford them anyway.

  Plus will the landlords get blamed when tenants fail to do daily airing, use ventilation in kitchen and bathroom and are too tight to turn in the heaters hhs makes landlords provide? Will it all become the landlord’s fault?
  
  End result: don’t rent out to anyone you suspect of possibly overcrowding a place or having low standards. But how can one know? Maybe just close the place up for the duration.

    Before houses had insulation respiratory diseases weren’t as common. Why? As you said Classic Liberal airing and heating help. As well as regular cleaning with decent Bleached and detergents, cleaning of beds and bedding etc. When we were children we only had heating in the lounge and even then it was only radiant heat from an open fire. We went to bed with PJ’s on and heaps of blankets.

      Yep, my Dad and his two brothers slept out on a half and half veranda all year round in Christchurch.
      They had canvas blinds to pull down to meet the wooden balastrade.
      They had woollen blankets. Played a lot of sport – two played rugby for Canterbury and one was an All Black. And two played cricket for Canty.
      They did all right until two of them got blown up in World War 2.

    Having worked in property,LLs always get blamed when tenants dry washing in the home making it damp.Never opening windows to ventilate, and never doing enough cleaning. Somehow we got by without HRV before that was invented?…..it’s cheaper to open windows.

      Our tenants complained of mold. We had a professional service come out and inspect, clean etc (1.5K) disinfect, the Service operator told them they needed to keep the extractor fan on for an hour in the mornings. 12 months later, same thing, only this time the service only cost $800 (as they had the previous inspection report). The Mold service operator said he doubted that they tenants were turning on the bathroom extractor fan. So we sent a formal letter advising about the extractor fan, costs of mold mitigation, reports from Mold inspector and bought them a dehumidifier, but also advising what would be the consequences of not following rules… I have good news in that this was 4 years (same tenants) ago and all’s well that ends well. There are some good stories out there…

        Disagree classic liberal, these re young kids (25-27 at the time) gainfully employee, that simply had no idea. We fixed it for them (TWICE) then told them it was their responsibility following on… and they did, indeed; pick up the responsibility and run with it.

      It’s weird how people are sometimes reluctant to open windows when the freezing cold rental they have is not insulated and doesn’t heat up again once you shut the window…
      
      But otherwise I agree that people don’t ventilate enough. I do every day (unless it’s pouring down).
      
      Worse is keeping on top of the mold that the landlord clearly just painted over so simply grows back through the ceilings.

        It’s not so much an issue with temperature, as you can always put a warmer jersey on. It’s that most tenants are too pissed, stoned, lazy or hungover to make the effort to open a window to freshen the place out. It’s why I got out of the rental market this year. I made a tidy profit, but my tenants weren’t too happy when I told them Jacindah just made being a LL untenable.

        Sometimes mould is the responsibility of the landlord to fix. And tenants can go to the Tenancy Tribunal if they think that is the case and the onus will be on the landlords to prove it is not their responsibility. If the TT agrees with the tenant there will be a notice to fix, probably compensation for the tenant and any termination given for some time will be set aside as retaliatory.
        
        The Tenancy Services website has two lists of responsibilities for mould – one list is short and one is long.
        
        Sometimes people say tenants are too scared to bring up issues with the landlord or the Tenancy Tribunal because they may be given notice to leave and there are no rentals available.
        
        Not to worry, as Minister Faafoi’s new rules about terminating tenancies are close now. He may not realise landlords have assets and choices and that most are running a business not a charity.

        I am aware of those factors but it doesn’t make them any less real. Particularly the fear of being labelled a squeaky wheel, however true or untrue that may be.
        
        Thankfully my property is getting the healthy home inspector through this week and they won’t be spared the details. Even more thankful that we will soon be out and into our own first home… Once we find one ?

        Insulation has been mandatory in rentals for several years now, unless the property is exempt for specified reasons.
        
        Owner occupied homes can be insulated or not. Owner’s choice.

      Agree Flossie: Also seem to fail in the concept of opening curtains and blinds to lighten up the home which all round makes you feel happier. It always stuns me how tenants are happy to live in a dark and miserable space with natural light coming in.

    That will run you straight into accusations of racism. Ethnic lifestyles are not always welcomed. Many Polynesians live in family clusters, much wider groups than our nuclear families.

    Another major problem is tenants go out during the day so then have to lock the house up and close the windows or else they will get burgled,
    Can’t hang the washing on the line as it will get ‘Appropriated’ so its hung inside in a sunny room.
    Where does all the water go? Into the wallpaper and ceiling tiles where is is used to grow mould.

    Drive through a high density state housing area around 11.00 a.m. and note the number of unkempt homes with all curtains (if not ripped down), windows shut, and glass covered in moisture.
    To think this is where our taxes are going . . . keeping losers in bed breeding, smoking dope, and expecting everyone else to feed their unwanted benefit producers.

  I was brought up in one of those un insulated state houses.
  I NEVER had a cold damp place to live in, because my PARENTS made sure it never was.
  There was never any mold.
  My thoughts are
  The Landlord,no matter who it is, OWNS the property. If you rent it is YOUR responsibility to look after MY property.
  No different than if you rent/ borrow MY lawnmower.

    I grew up in uninsulated homes and never ever did we have mould. We opened windows even just a crack in winter in the bathroom and there was always air flow. We didn’t know what mould was in those days. I would say not airing homes is a big cause and probably overcrowding with the windows shut tight at night when people retired to bed.

      My brother in law grew up in Oamaru in the fifties in a house such, no doubt such as that with not a fibre of insulation.
      He died in his fifties from the after affects of rheumatic fever. He had valves replaced when he was about forty. That’s when the damage the discovered.
      We lived in a typically cold NZ house in Timaru. An open fire in the front room for heating plus an electric heater. It wasn’t until I rented in London that I realized just how awful our houses were & to an extent still are.
      My daughter bought a 50s house Onehunga. I stayed there for a month one winter and couldn’t understand why it was so cold & damp in the bedroom. After a few years I helped with the alterations and found that not only was there no insulation in the floor or walls, neither was there building paper. Just gibboard & weatherboards.

    Wrong. The Residential Tenancies Act 1986 regulates the responsibilities and obligation of the parties. If you don’t know the difference between borrowing a lawnmower and renting a house then you have no business being a landlord.

        It actually belongs to the sovereign state of NZ. All you have is a fee simple claim which gives you a bundle of rights subordinate to the state’ rights to regulate your use.
        
        In addition when you lease real property you give up exclusive possession and transfer this over to the leaseholder for the duration of the lease. Exclusive possession is one of the characteristics of ownership which has been transferred upon execution of the lease so your rights are circumscribed by contract and the statutory overlay.

  A funny thing about this ‘Rheumatic Fever; It’s been known since at least 2011 that the problem is both preventable, largely confined to Maori and PI society and that it is increasing in severity, yet ‘MAGICALLY’ and only two weeks before an election the CoL makes it a ‘priority’.
  
  It wouldn’t be somehow an attempt at vote catching’ would it?
  
  Surely not, ‘cos after all, this is the most open, and transparent, government ever (or so the PTPM tells us).

    I would like to see a bit of that Labour Largesse going towards a trial of Blis K12, an oral mouth and throat probiotic. Developed in Dunedin by some smart people from Otago Uni, more recently by the listed NZ company Blis Technologies and available globally. A NZ success story.
    
    There have been some trials in BoP and Italy. Not sure what sort of trials but seem to recall there was an impact on strep throat incidences.
    
    Seems to me it would be an initiative worth funding, and doesn’t rely on people opening windows.

    In the late 90s/early 00s I was involved in a paediatric study that attempted to find out what contributed to cellulitis in kids. Naida Glavish and Ed Mitchell were leaders in the project. I was a $/hr worker… Some of the findings were not just crowding of residences, but also sharing of/not enough resources. For example, imagine if there are 6 kids and 2 towels… not only are bugs transferred by sharing towels, but by time the third kid uses that towel, it’s not exactly dry.

  There is probably a genetic element as well.
  The issues are (as someone who has been to a lot of MOH and DHB based RhF prevention meetings) the terrible housing stock, overstayers sleeping in garages, anti-landlord laws and government policies, and people having more children than they can afford.

    Still possible for households on low income to buy a home. Happens every day. Sure does help though if they are DINKs, live frugally for a few years, increase income by second jobs or overtime or adding skills, build up Kiwsaver and start with a small suburban do up or a studio apartment in a less salubrious location.
    
    Build equity by paying down the mortgage, taking in flatmates, working hard and long a few more years and trading up.
    
    Or complain about rents and go for retail therapy and a social life.

  Well I’m glad you asked. Apparently there’s a thing called “Kiwibuild” and – managed by a highly competent chap (he must be, he’s been promoted to number 4 and it can’t be for any other reason than his brilliance. I mean, it’s not like he has any dirt, or negatives, or knows where the bodies are buried) called Twyford – will deliver, I’m reliably informed, 100,000 new houses. So there’s that.
  
  This initiative is just to put curtains on the 100,000 new houses.

National is supporting a wide ranging inquiry into Gloriavale, Labour is not.

    I think the answer is that the original inhabitants were adults who volunteered and their children at some point do sign a document by which they also volunteer.
    We know more today than we did in the past about techniques of control that can occur in closed groups, so arguably Parliament should inquire into how to ensure such groups actually have the informed consent of their members.
    I think one very obvious point would be lack of choice in contact – if people who leave cannot come back freely to visit their families, or their families go to visit them, without repercussions, then the group has ceased to preserve its members freedom of association.

    They’re not employees. Technically they’re all volunteers. Therefore the employment laws don’t apply to them.
    Ironically, I think I saw angry Andy on the TV stating that, and that’s why the government hasn’t investigated them for labour law breeches before. It’s not often I hear him say things that make sense so I had to pinch myself…

  Members if that community that have left,have reported not receiving their working for families payments that were applied for and accepted by a 3rd party there. Surely this is wrong and against the law. They were persuaded to sign forms to sign that money over and not into their own accounts. Can’t this be investigated?

  When I lived in Ngaio I used to see Exclusive Brethren adherents around about with the women in 50s frocks. I believe the cult leaders used to have very prosperous businesses using these people.
  I’m sure if there’s an inquiry into Gloriavale all sorts of disgruntled ex members of other groups will pop up demanding inquires.
  I saw the bloke on TV who the people at Gloriavale worked from a very young age every day etc. There’s people who investigate this sort of stuff.

    Hey MCos we lived in Ngaio for a few years – in a state house overlooking Nairnville Park. My dad worked in a government department and went to the city on the train everyday. I started at Ngaio School as a five year old.
    My mum wore ‘50’s frocks and wasn’t even in the Bretheren.

    I think the term ‘fundamentalist’ is routinely, but probably inadvertently misused. These sects don’t practice the fundamental elements of Christian teachings, but rather an authoritarian rule of law that cheery-picks element of the Christian faith as justification.   Gloriavale is unusual and has made TV copy but it is little different from any club or society with rules. There are many Church communities including some for retired Priests. The laws governing those bodies are well in place.

  What’s also important is that yes, some border closures to slow disease make sense, but where is NZ’s long term total bubble going? Is the tourism industry dead now? Even if we eventually open up again, there will be more diseases, so will we close down for years each time?
  
  As the article says, it’s about closing early to slow disease, but the US never went for the NZ total long term bubble approach.

  Happy – As a former newspaper reporter (would not elevate myself to the realms of “journalist” using a by-line) I have been gutted at the amount of immature, biased dross written by learner reporters on $tuff and other publications.
  The balanced, fantastic writers who taught me my craft would be horrified – even though some of them were of the left perspective.
  But – on this I do not agree.
  Ms Collins calling other people ”dear” in public puts her right down in my estimation.
  It’s patronising and demeaning and I wish she didn’t do it.
  What’s the point? Just to belittle another woman in public life.

Their efforts were outed in an opinion article in the Washington Post republished on Stuff, which praised New Zealand’s lockdown, saying it had not flattened the curve towards the peak of Covid-19 infections, but effectively “squashed” it.

Tindall underwrote the purchase of 50 New Zealand-made ventilators at $60,000 each.

      In this case, the major cause of the destruction was the WIND. If you look at the village on Google Maps there is (was) actually relatively little forest, just some biggish trees around the periphery. Once the fire took hold in the trees that did exist, the wind borne horizontal flames spread destruction rapidly even to homes that were in clear areas. I’m not sure if anything could have stopped what was the eventual combination of circumstances.

Several observations:

1. Why did Labour send Willie and not Kelvin?

2. Marama promises Maori the world while disguising the deceit that Maori have problems that a government can solve.

3. A masterclass from Peters in knowing his core constituency and singing to it.

4. I’m deeply impressed with Dr Shane Reti.

5. I am thoroughly unimpressed with Willie Jackson – he said obvious untruths about National’s last government and talks in glib cliches about Labour’s failures in the last three years and about their plans in the next three.

6. Having listened to NZ politicians talking about poor outcomes in Maori health, education and employment etc for approximately 40 years I’m deeply cynical towards politicians now saying “vote for us, this time it’ll be different…”

7. Maori succeed in NZ when, as individuals and families, they want to and are prepared to put in the effort and make good decisions – as many have for decades and decades and the same as anyone else.

8. Marama argues that poor Maori health outcomes is caused by Maori not delivering and being responsible for managing Maori health. She presents no evidence that (even more) Maori providers will deliver better outcomes nor does she address the fact that inevitably these sorts of policies merely enrich the providers while outcomes remain the same.

9. Julian Wilcox does a good job yet again, in my view.

    Interesting idea. Prior to the American civil war black female slaves were raped and sexually abused on a massive almost industrial scale by white plantation owners and workers with impunity. Obviously many would have had children which would have not been acknowledged but you can see this in the variation of facial structures within African Americans. Are they really therefore black? And what about ‘whites’ who were able actually black but were able to pass as whites due to favourable phenotypes, are they really white?

It’s nothing to do with being so-called ‘Maori’ but more to do with poor choices and for some reason many ‘Maori’ make poor choices. Perhaps this is where the focus should be.

      We are looking at the simple question of who qualifies as Maori and therefore gets privileges such as entering some Uni courses more easily.
      
      Not a difficult question to understand. I knew a totally white, blond person taking a course who said they could have got in more easily because they were 1/8 or 1/16 Maori. They had had every ‘white privilege’: stable suburban upbringing, reasonable schooling. Why exactly are Maori privileges extended to them?
      
      Your ‘black slaves raped’ point above is irrelevant and offensive. Fortunately NZ does not have that history and you know perfectly well here that people on KB generally just want equal rights. My family is full of people who married interracially out of love and had children.
      
      Returning land actually owned by certain tribes and stolen may be justified, but then one has to ask – what if that tribe stole the land earlier on from another? How far back does this go?

      IC – I don’t think it’s a matter of ‘don’t like Maori’ that’s not the point, the point is some Maori’s spoilt and expectant attitude that everything they get is ‘their dues’. Well it’s not, their neighbours pay for them and their families. Time they were taught to take some responsibilities of their own. A wonderful Maori Elder friend of mine said to me many years ago “….. there’s Maori’s and there’s Maori’s” and that totally sums it up in my mind.

The erroneous counter-argument to the principle that a prosecutor should dismiss any case they know they can’t prove is a cynical view of the phrase “everyone deserves their day in court.”
Under this argument, the prosecution know they can’t prove the case, but thinks the defendant should be scared by being made to sit through a trial anyway.
That’s what courts are for, right? Wrong.
If the prosecution don’t believe there is enough evidence to proceed, then they shouldn’t be advocating otherwise to a jury – even (and this is the key) if they believe 100% the defendant is factually guilty.
A case should not be filed to play to public sentiment and it damn sure shouldn’t be filed for political benefit!
An American view, but numerous New Zealand trials and the dangers of some legislation being suggested make it seem relevant to many police decisions.

  Some masks can give some protection if worn correctly. For months we were told not to wear masks bc ‘health staff need them’, ‘you’ll do it wrong and touch your face even more’, ‘most masks are ineffectual’. And some of that was true, but some types of masks for some people in some situations would have made sense.
  
  Now people are going crazy and it’s socially compulsory to do useless shit like wearing pathetic bits of flabby fabric, politicians proud to wear paper masks under their noses, people walking alone wearing masks instead of enjoying the fresh air, people alone in their cars with a mask on.

Andersen has dropped down the list from 28 to 45

Even last night, the Italian restaurant in Merivale we visited could only seat us in their outside courtyard, as they were otherwise booked out.   Perhaps she refers to Jesus’ teaching on divorce, that it was permitted under the law of Moses “because of your hardness of heart” (Matthew 19:8), in other words, because of our failings.

Judith Collins has praised Jacinda Ardern for wearing a hijab when she visited the two mosques hit by the Christchurch terrorist attack.

The National MP delivered a speech on Wednesday in Parliament paying respects to the victims of the Friday massacre when 50 people were killed by a gunman.
Putting politics aside, Collins said she would “like to thank the Prime Minister for the work she did on Saturday”, adding that she thought it was “outstanding”.

      “They are us” is the stupidest slogan I have ever heard. The message that was meant to be conveyed was one of unity, but the very use of the word “they” refers to people other than us – the exact opposite of what was wanted. “They” are never “us”.
      
      The phrase should have included “we” not “they”. eg “we stand together”, “we are one”, “we are united”. Lucky for the PM this social media happy society has no intelligence.
      
      I cringe every time I hear the phrase, or see it proudly displayed by people who have no idea they are promoting division by their poor understanding of basic English words.

  I lost my hearing in my left ear in 2015. It was caused by a stroke in the left ear (which is quite rare).
  
  As a performing musician it was devastating. It is also dangerous as it affects judgement around strange sounds which can be frightening as well.
  
  It makes socialising extremely difficult.
  
  Although it was devastating for me I was shocked how many people thought it was hilarious. So I stopped telling people.
  
  I fully expect to be mocked for this post. Hearing loss is oh so funny. Until it happens to you.

        The “hearing aid” solution is a thing in the dead ear that is a sound receiver and radio transmitter. Thing in live ear (may have all the “normal” hearing aid properties) is also a radio receiver. My wife finds hers reasonably useful …

    Chemotherapy a couple of years ago resulted in mild tinnitus, mild impairment as well as a sensitivity to excessive ambient noises (large crowds, noisy restaurants etc.)
    
    My youngest is also sensitive, turns out he needs grommets for water behind the ear.

Australia and New Zealand have the highest rates in the world.
In excess of 350 people die from melanoma every year in nz.

Have just gone thru the new “”book a jail”” process from the NZ Gummint. Ministry of Business Innovation etc etc.
I guess that sums up that it will be a fuckup.

First I should mention I have been designing, programming and using business system since 1973! and have been “”confined”” in Asia since Covid hit

Yes Winston said come home mid March, so booked a ticket for 10 days later….. during which time Winston said stay there and also to add to the confusion my flight was cancelled.
For all you people who dont travel you need to be able to TRANSIT, not only book a flight.
So not only did airlines stop flying, countries stopped transit. I needed a transit.
Singapore finally opened for Transit in September. Allowed a couple of weeks to check that the flights were actually going to happen….then booked a flight

Back to the get in to jail free fuckup.

It should have been a simple process

Fill out a request.
Name (as per passport)

Flight # and date of arrival.
Intended destination after jail
Any special requirements id food problems etc
email address(or other method of contact, Viber, whatsapp, messenger etc)

But no.
Register and create a 12 character complicated password!!!
Enter name as per passport etc etc
email address etc

Then go to next step.
Yep.
Repeat information
Name
But this time add
passport number
Date of issue
Date of Expiry
Gender
Date of birth.
Issuing authority
Inside leg measurement(well why not?)

Then its on to notification of arrival
Airline Name
Flight number(seems they dont know that flight number identifies the airline)
Day of arrival
Airline booking reference
Where I will stay after jail
is that temorary or permanent
Will I stay 90 days more or less

They send all sorts of step by step confirmations to my email.
But the final confirmation is either print or download!!!!!

Yep did the application on my laptop. No printer
So wanted a copy on my phone which I will have easily available.

Yawn. So have to create a PDF and mail it to my email address.

So all you knowledgeable posters out their how can you make a complaint about Jacinda Ardern using the COVID-19 time for annoucements on how many cases we have that have contacted the virus and how many come from isolation. The Prime Minister is using this time to campaign and criticize the opposition which is supposed to be taboo. The electoral Commission do not want to know and just keep passing you to different people on there staff.

Not to mention their UMR “poll” results are at odds with all previous polls.
