    It does depend on the definition of poverty. If, for example, you decide that poverty means being on less than the average income, then as CL says above, it simply cannot practically be eliminated.

    Clearly she was out to trick him … or, reality check, any functioning adult seeking to be President should be able to provide clear answers to those questions without dissembling and lying.

So that is a good example of multicultural enrichment. And also why the prime minister thinks we need hate speech laws. Because otherwise people like me will continue to point out that Islam as it is written and as it is practiced is fundamentally incompatible with western civilisation.
There is no free speech in Islam. You “insult” the prophet and you are dead.

Given we can’t talk about politics… Yesterday I bought new tyres for my car. Some nice Michelin ones. I have previously inflated my tyres to 38 PSI. Tyre guy says no 34 PSI. Then last night had drinks with 3 friends. Mentioned tyres and the pressure debate. One says 40 PSI. Another says 32 PSI. I then changed subject.?

Anyway I settled on 36 PSI but there must be many drivers who don’t have a clue. Interesting the little badge inside car recommends 29 PSI which seems crazy low.

Interested in any views from the car enthusiasts here.

    Yeah that was my inclination. But the guy at Beaurepaires said “totally ignore the little badge on the car” and over the last five years I have had the same advice from two other tyre fitters. I’m just saying that I have researched the issue for quite a while and I’m still unclear. If you were average Joe out there you would have no clue.

    I am pretty sure that it varies by the tire (make & model). I have some Bridgestone RE003’s on (one of my) VW’s and the recommended pressure is 36-38 depending on the load.
    
    Tyres have changed a lot, I recall when punctures used to be quite common.

  Michelins used to be low pressure radials -say 25 psi. Not sure about 2020 Michelins. These days between 30 and 35 psi depending on the ambient temperature

    It is better to over-inflate than under-inflate.
    I have a 2007 Subaru Legacy with 210 x 17 – 60 radials, and the recommended pressure is 38 psi. Need to check what the tyre manufacturer recommends for the vehicle.

        He should have said 60 series. 215 is the width. 17 is the bead size, and 60 is the depth from the tread to the rim. But not always. My Landcruiser has 265/70/16 AT, run at 42 psi

  I used to work in the tyre manufacturing business and know a bit about tyre design. Car builders are more concerned with how smooth their vehicles feel to the consumer than how long the tyres last, they therefore tend to advise lower pressures than the tyres should have for long life. My recommendation is to run 36 psi minimum but not more than 40 psi; I find 38 psi a good compromise. This should give you a good ride, decent steering response, and minimum wear.

  BY, you have rightly chosen wise one, they are a lovely quiet tyre for a normal vehicle. My tyre chap says 35psi for this brand is ideal, whether you are loaded or not. Too high or too low and you cause wear, plus Michelin are designed to be steady in wet conditions at the correct psi.

  the suspension of each car is designed with a specific tyre and for a specific use in the country of sale.
  The engineers have spent many months ,or longer , logging every aspect of the cars performance.
  The recommended tyre pressure on inside of the door is the result of that testing.
  If you use a different tyre than factory original then pressure may vary but not dramatically

    Yes but see comment from Dairy Flat above. His comment is consistent with the consensus of every tyre shop I have been to and every forum I have read online. The real danger comes from under-inflating. Using the “recommended” pressure of 29 PSI listed in the door sill of my car would be nuts. It might feel more ‘comfortable’ driving around city streets, but in cornering on a highway the side walls would deform. The tyres would also wear out more quickly.

  I went to VTNZ a couple of weeks ago for a WOF. Watched the guy try to figure out (then google) how to put the seats forward (2 door) to check rear belts. Then watched him check the oil (told me later it was low & dirty, coincidentally they have an oil change service, but the oil is neither low nor dirty) then watched him ignore the headlight adjustment switch on dashboard & fiddle around with a screwdriver to “adjust” them. At the end he failed me for a tyre(marginal) and “2 buckled wheels – but didn’t note which ones they were. So now I have tyres off, tyre shop & I confirm that any buckles are so minor to be almost indetectable. I’ll have a go today to sort the 1mm or so out of round. Never going back to these idiots except to get the sticker and tell them they are fwits. Will be in touch with the NZ managers however FWIW.

    I will never go back there either. They failed me because the middle lap belt in the back seat was “wrinkled”. Nobody ever uses it so I just tuck it down the back of the seat. Yet they failed to pick up an important issue that I knew had to be fixed and should have caused the car to fail the warrant. Best advice is to find a good mechanic/servicing shop who you totally trust. Build a relationship with them and get them to do the warrant. The guys at VTNZ come across as brain dead.

      The indiviuals at VTNZ are not experienced trained engineers, they have been through a WOF/COF training course.
      A one minute tech conversation with any of them will highlight this.
      I was once told by a VTNZ examiner that my car exhaust was indicative of a pending wof failure. This on a very cold frosty morning after the car had been driven two miles to the VTNZ site. Didn’t understand the concept of condensation. He eventually passed the vehicle, don’t think that he had the capacity to remember the short lesson in science knowledge.

        Speaking of mechanics – when I first moved to Christchurch someone recommended a mechanic. I went there twice but had a bad feeling about him. Just didn’t like his attitude. So I found a new place – totally great.
        
        Anyway turns out the first guy had been not doing what he billed me for. Instead of putting coolant in the radiator, he filled it with water yet charged me for coolant. I asked for a transmission flush, and he charged me for it. When I went to the new guy three months later he told me that he was certain that the car had not had a transmission flush recently. So he had to do it over. The water in the radiator had also started to damage the heating core.
        
        I am sure there are not many dishonest car mechanics out there but if you are the victim of one, they can do a lot of damage.

  Get some chalk, cover a strip the full width of the tyre and go for a short drive. If only the centre of the tread is clean when you get back, pressure is too high, if the edges and onto the sidewalk are cleaner than the centre, pressure is too low and the full tread width even is just right.

  Income tax is the only reasonable tax and landlords pay it.
  
  And cgt already exists: bright line tax for people actually trading houses. Everyone else just has an increasingly old building that they have to maintain and that is worth less in real terms (ie compared to newer buildings).

  Surely the first thing to do is to look at expenditure rather than increasing taxes? What percentage of government spending is waste or harmful? Cut this first. Someone needs to be brave and restrict DPB or whatever it is called now to one child. A mistake is a mistake, OK, but enabling a lifestyle and creating an underclass on the taxpayer is morally wrong – such a change would have major impacts on spending in the decades ahead. Sell red radio and TV One. Cut the civil service headcount by maybe 25%. Close all the single issue Ministries and Departments. We could get a tax cut and pay down debt.

First they came for Charlie Hebdo, then again last week. This week a history teacher. As a cartoonist and a history teacher myself, this is poignant. Can I ever teach the Crusades again or critique Islam in religious studies?

Last week a Nz election candidate was pilloried for a class he ran as a history teacher critiquing climate change, as a critical thinking session.

Same thing…? Kinda. There is a growing intolerance of open and free debate that critiques and assesses life and culture.

Response? Do we press on and try to re-educate, with mosque attacks along the way and individual murders like this, or pull back behind the walls? Its a worthwhile debate…I just hope I don’t get beheded for initiating it.

      The laptop and its contents were offered to the FBI originally back in September 2019, which rather undermines the idea that this is a Russian plant.
      
      Also, as the laptop was offered directly, there was no need for a GJ Subpoena for it, as actually happened. The difference is that a GJ subpoena then allows the FBI to deny any knowledge of the laptop and its contents, and to (should they chose) permanently suppress that information.
      
      However the existence of a GJ subpoena does mean that a crime has to be alleged in order to obtain the subpoena.

        Low end of the retirement market and no industry, neither has it’s neighbour 35km away, other towns are 100km or further away. It largely services ‘travelling’ tourists of one kind or another and retirees – it’s mainly local retail and government service jobs. Retirees move there so they don’t spend money. It lacks prosperity. A ‘job’ is an existence. Kids leave school and have a choice just like Kiwi kids – stay here or move to an Australian city, or better aussie regional city.

While it was taking place there was advertising for ‘Nam to influence their vote.
For weeks the press and advertising in the media, has tried to influence voting choices for months but today it may change your vote.

BTW as others have commented how come we have had electioneering in force sine advanced voting opened. That is a clear breach of the intent of the law as regards polling day.

the law is truly an ass if on the one hand parties can campaign while the polls are open for voting for 2 weeks and then that same behaviour suddenly becomes illegal on polling day when probably more than 60% have voted.

Dumb Dumb and Dumber. It really sums up the morons.

  The amount of sunshine and lack of morbidly obese people may have helped.
  
  I also read that the two preceding flu seasons had been mild so a number of those that may have been expected to die had not so were particularly vulnerable when covid came along.

New element added to periodic table

Melbourne University researchers have discovered the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (symbol Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.
These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called pillocks. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact.
A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second to from 4 days to 4 years to complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.
In fact, Governmentium’s mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium (symbol Ad), an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks, but twice as many morons.

As a kiwi in oz for the last 8yrs I haven’t voted this time, while I keep up to date with what’s happening the longer I’m here the more fraudulent it feels to cast a vote for a government in a country I no longer live in, and a trip back every couple of years to catch up with friends and family shouldn’t be enough to allow my contined participation.

  Had an interesting encounter with one a little while back. Was walking in a local bit of bush and heard this incredible racket, and it was a Tui making this really loud and raucous cry completely unlike its normal output (which can be fairly loud and raucous itself).
  
  When I managed to spot the Tui, I saw that it was about 20 feet or so from a largish brown bird hunched in a tree, and it was a morepork. Being daytime I guess the morepork was either unwell or had been disturbed. But the noise the Tui was making was remarkable, it was, I guess, the standard Tui alarm call for “flying danger”, something they would rarely encounter now but have a specific call for. Presumably it would also apply for hawks and for the Ruru (laughing owl) before it became extinct.

I see that the Court of Appeal has refused to hear the MSM appeal against the suppression orders in the SFO v ABC and DEF prosecution. An interesting point is that DEF did not want suppression but was forced to accept it as had s/he been identified it would have led to the identification of ABC. I thought the judge’s logic, that identifying the two would lead to disappointment in those who had already voted, was particularly odd, given that they are likely to be just as disappointed when they do finally find out, as undoubtedly will those who voted subsequently.

  Yes, Singapore has some real advantages in its pandemic response. Economies of scale, national wealth, and practical matters like almost nobody being ever being more than a couple of kilometers from healthcare. Add to that very first world infrastructure, a population mostly ready to comply with any and all government requirements and a formidable public service that attracts the best and brightest. All helps. Not so strange was that what outbreaks did occur was within immigrant worker groups that are used as cheap and expendable labour and are thus housed in overcrowded dorms with no opportunity for any social distancing and little capacity for clean environments. It seems the weakest link is always going to be conditions the least advantaged are expected to endure.

    Confirmation of the ownership comes from the request by HB’s attorney for the return of the property, which was refused.

That date, plus the absolutely confirmed ownership (plus the photos !) pretty completely scotches any stupid talk of “Russian Disinformation” as an “October Surprise”.   Henry was engaged by NZRFU to interview candidates and select a new coach. In my view, as employer, NZRFU owes a duty of confidentiality about the whole process to each of the candidates and Henry is just one of those obliged to honour such an obligation.
  
  I do not think that it is appropriate now to make public comments about the candidates or the preferences of any of the interviewing and selection panel.
  Henry would have been better served keeping mum.

  I was an apprentice on the sister ship of the Port Chalmers, the Port Wyndham, and she was built like a brick outhouse.   I was 2nd Mate of the next Port Chalmers and she had a painting of the Op Pedestal in the saloon and I have a copy at home.
  
  In the copy the Ohio ( tanker) is being bombed and the Waimarana has just blown up.
  
  It was the most important convoy of WW 2 as it saved Malta. If Malta had fallen Rommel would have been able to supply the Afrika Korps with no problem and then the Suez would have been taken and the Germans could have taken the oil fields of the Middle East and linked up in the Caucasus.
  
  The Master of the PC was on his 1st voyage in command!!! We dug out the plans for mounting guns on the Wyndham and she could have been quite a foe!!!

  Yes, and 2.95m is not wide enough for any bus or truck because as a long straight solid object going around a corner you need a lot lot more than 2.95m. The key design terms are called ‘Overhang’, ‘Tail swing’, and ‘Swept Path’.
  
  Depending on tightness of corner, and how far back from the front bumper the wheels are, and if there are street signs or light poles, you may need more than twice the bus width ( 2 x 2.95m) to prevent any part of the bus being outside the while line.
  
  Engineers with monumental screw ups like this are not fit to be employed in these positions. It is a breach of their training and engineering design rules.
  
  I had an accident where my car was sidewiped by a bus at 50 km/hr in such an incident, on a two lane narrow road, 6.0 m wide without parking spaces. The bus was 2.5m wide, his lane was 3.0m wide, on a tight corner, the second part of a double zig zag corner with a light pole at the edge of the footpath in the corner apex.
  
  The bus was coming out of the corner at 50km/hr. I was slowed ready to turn into a driveway. The driver claimed I crossed the white line and that he didn’t.
  
  If his bus was a giant Conga 12m long and 2.5m wide and in a “S” shape to get around the corner he may have had a point.
  
  His insurance company backed him until both his and my insurance company got the diagrams which showed he had crossed the white line by about 30% into my lane, to get around the corner and avoid the light pole at the corner apex in his lane. It become a knock for knock claim with the cause put down to poor road design.
  
  Unfortunately, you can look forward to accidents and mishaps on Tamaki drive.

And i thort i would run this by the group to see if anyone can help…. or maybe has the same problem?
Our lawnmower man comes once a week. However, this time of the year, about 3 or 4 days after he’s been, we get the most annoying little patches of ‘Daisies’ popping up in random areas of the grass.
They look most untidy and we were wondering if there’s anything we can do to kill them off without damaging the surrounding lawn?

Any advice would be appreciated

  Yes , Maggie, can be sprayed out quite easily. As an ex GreenAcres contractor we had a spray mixture that would kill all weeds and leave the grass untouched. It was a mixture of Banvine, Grazon and Versatil at the correct portions but need a spray licence to buy some of them. Ring a good professional contractor and get him to do it.

Democrats are literally unbelieveable. Biden’s ABC ‘town hall’ meeting with an audience of supposedly undecided voters saw him take questions from people later identified as a former Obama speechwriter and the wife of a Democratic Candidate, and that’s just the two they have caught out. Anyone believe that the questions weren’t written by Biden’s staff?

On previous election days the streets were full of cars displaying party streamers and rosettes. I haven’t seen a single one today despite driving right across the city a couple of times. Is that banned now, too? There is no excitement in this election, no feeling of it being a special day. Is this due to the long drawn out voting period or have NZers lost all sense of joy and occasion?

OUCH!!!! The Hunter Biden laptop scandal that Rudy Giuliani now has is pretty serious. Media are calling it bigger than Watergate.

It’s pretty slamdunk that Biden has been taking bribes for years and has lied about his awareness of Hunter’s Russia and China ‘activities.’ Will effect the election.

Just thinking out loud …. So ACT go from 0.5% (2017) t0 8% (2020). If that difference of 7.5% all came from National originally, as a hypothetical exercise if that 7.5% instead went to (i.e. stayed with) National they would go from 27% (currently) to 34.5%.

Which of course sounds a lot more “respectable”.

So should National have tried to arrest the swing to ACT much more than they did?

Naturally pre-election it was acceptable for National to have a strong ally in ACT, but now post election is it fair to “blame the leader” (Collins) for the fall, when in fact looking through the pre-election lens of “Nat plus ACT” (as a MMP partnership) it didn’t matter?
