Soon Auckland will be be paying large $$$$ for Waikato water. Andrew Little highlighted a couple of years ago…there needs to be some clarity as to where taxpayer money goes when it is paid to Waikato River authorities .
The trust, as part of its 2010 Treaty settlement, is receiving $1 million a year for 20 years through the Ministry for the Environment to care for the Waikato River. Four other Waikato and Waipā river iwi also receive the annual co-management payment.

Little is seeking advice on why such funds, even if they are part of a Treaty settlement, are not subject to any oversight.

Amazing election. Best election ever?? All the best and worse on display.

Trump expanded the appeal to the GOP for minorities but went backward on the white male vote. Biden if he wins takes out a sitting president which is remarkable.

What ever the final outcome Biden or Trump will be seen as illegitimate by either side as the election heads to the Courts.

At this point a GOPe loser like Mittens or McTurd would have given up. Trump will fight on.

So hear me out. Trump is winning in the battleground states. Those states have Democrat governors. Suddenly all those states stop counting.
Then in the morning they start counting again and thousands of votes appear for Biden. None for Trump.

Is it possible that the democrats are trying to steal the election?

How is it that big states like Texas and Florida can count millions of ballots on the night and have a result? They have republican governors.

Dems are trying to steal the election. Am I wrong?

      I’d like to think you’re right Batman but the US has history in this regard. Joe Kennedy and the teamsters. There is also the fact that at one point Biden’s vote in Michigan increased by 138k votes whilst Trump got zero. That needs investigation surely? In the interests of democracy and even if just to explain what happened. Whoever wins needs to be seen as the winner of a fair process.

        The thing with MI, WI, OH and GA etc is that the mail ballots are counted after the day votes.
        
        So we have a situation where the rural red counties had a lot of in person votes yesterday and they got counted first. Then it looked like Trump was ahead.
        
        Now, the big blue cities and counties which would normally come in late at night, are coming the next day as the counting of mail ballots continues because those big blue areas overwhelmingly vote blue.
        
        As for the 138k votes thing, I think there’s a bit of chinese whispers at play there. Trump will certainly have got some votes but the lead may have been cut by 138k despite both candidates getting more votes overall. These last places are 70%+ mail votes for Dems because their voters were wary of the virus around ballot request time.

      To the best of my knowledge, I know of no examples of dead Republicans voting. I do know of examples of counties that end up voting Democrat where the voters exceed 100% of the role. Do not know of any examples like that, that voted Republican. Make of it what you will Batman, but I only see one side with what appears to be systematic voter fraud.

        Anyone voting for dead people should be charged. Trump’s voting commission found no evidence.
        
        Out of state via mail is entirely legal in the vast majority of states.
        
        There are guards against mail then in person voting fraud. This includes vote scanning etc like they do here. You would eventually be found out and charged with a crime.
        
        Non voters having a mail vote sent in? Doesn’t that make them voters? If not registered they can’t get a mail ballot.
        
        No evidence ever of trump votes being destroyed. You’re just making that up / repeating something made up.

    Trying to steal the election by allowing all of the votes to be counted? What we have seen is the states which counted the mail in votes last, have of course see a late surge from Biden. Trump wants to go back and stop it where has was still winning. This is going to go on forever if Trump loses with Biden on 270. Trump has a lot of ways to illegitimise the election. So it goes down to the Supreme Court or even the senate. I think Biden will win and Trump will steal it.

      The Republicans want counting to be stopped so that they can ensure proper procedures are being followed as per the law (which they aren’t at the moment). Counting will then resume.

It’s just really close and last to count mail-ins strongly favor Biden (as was expected for demographic reasons) and Trump is slightly on the wrong side of the true democratic will of the people. Remains a stunning result given how far off the obviously strongly biased (and being used as an influencing tool?) polling it is. Not to mention flying in the face of most media bluster.
  
  Note also that it was Republican legal maneuvering that prevented early mail ballots from being counted pre-election (knowing that they would favor Democrats), and their continued maneuvering that is trying to have them excluded now.

  Scott, a variety of states are still counting votes (and some of those, I imagine, stopped at some point last night and will continue counting today). You just aren’t hearing about those states because given the number of votes counted, and the margins involved, the result is extremely unlikely to change in those states

News yesterday that legal processes in the case of NZ’s unwanted German resident are still grinding on, & will no doubt bring more groans. Why don’t the courts save the taxpayers more cost and hand down the decision that legal experts know is the “correct legal” decision based on NZ law and jurisprudence?

That is, this episode was a political stitch up from the start, Dotcom and his mates aren’t wanted, but NZ law and process is such that due process was never followed, and consequently, Dotcom will be free to go and we the taxpayers will foot the bill?

So, lessons for politicians, stay out of the legal process.

The same is also the case for the unwanted Australian in the UK.

These people may be an embarrassment to the establishment (particularly politicians with big money friends), but misuse of the justice process to serve the interests of the establishment is not in anybody’s interests.

Well, as of this morn, we simply just don’t know who Prez is, cos of that silly posting-in date/stamp system US has. If Trump had canned his Twitter account, even a year ago, he would be Prez. But he never listens. I have it like this…

Biden has to win all three (MIC, NV, WIS. If Trump wins any of those, its over). Biden has no further path but might just make it. Trump has more options. A State could unexpectedly flip, like Arizona, but that was a John McCain outlier I think (“He was a loser, got caught”) but the trend is all Trump. It could go either way, but you’d have to say, favours Trump. Biden could squeak in.

WIS is in both, as it could go either way. A late night dump of nearly 140,000 ballots favoured DEMs 96%, obv DEM counties. PENN could too, but it looks like Trump is well ahead with 600,000 more votes.If Trump wins MICH he wins 24. My prediction 2 days ago was Trump by 20.

I remember when

My source in the industry advises that they are receiving more enquiries from NZers about dairy worker positions. Most are from small towns in their region and are young workers wishing to enhance their CV. They do not appear to want long-term careers in the industry.
The migrant workers’ agents have been largely without income since the covid lockdown. There is a real fear that the best operators may leave the industry, to the detriment of both the workers and the farmers.
Also many of the older migrant workers are setting timeframes for retiring and returning home in the next few years.
The potential problem is that their children are NZ educated, have lost or are losing their language and have no memories of their homeland. They think of themselves as New Zealanders.

      The fishing quota for which these boats fish is Maori owned so they do not pay tax.
      I do not know the vessels ownership but suspect they are in a Maori Trust so do not pay tax.
      Why do we have Russians crews and not Maori ones who own the fishing rights.

        Might be related to the fact that these are old Soviet-era Russian boats. At least that is my understanding. So all the writing, manuals, signs, instrument dials etc would be in Russian. The first thing to teach a new Kiwi crew would be some level of proficiency in spoken/written Russian …
        
        No doubt the boats were considered to be a good buy at the time of purchase.

Is there any level that our media won’t step to as their political bias and determination to have Election results go their way is frankly disgusting and one eyed. Who in there right mind would have Josie Pagani as a expert on their show, when it is well known of her one eyed views favour the left and former Labour failure as a candidate a few elections ago. After newshubs attempt to give the public a fair assessment of how the Election was going it is time for the TV hosts and staff to be sanctioned on giving there view as it is not about them and there lies , it is about a fair and truthful account of what’s happening for both sides not a Host , Journalist or TV personalities view.

Having worked in the electoral system at a number of levels doing a number of jobs I know NZ has a robust process that is beyond reproach. I do wonder how robust the US system is besides the size and scale.
Does it have the processes procedures and checks and balances to ensure all ballots are counted correctly.

  It seems to be State by State with each making their own rules. The Electoral College is a bit of a foil as the total votes for any State are fixed and there is a provision for allocation of those by Party at the prior determination of the State. That prevents individual States swamping the overall result each time hence disempowering the smaller ones.
  In NZ we expect to know who the voters are and to be able to prove that only one vote has occurred and that the non-living have been duly excluded. I recall an afternoon in the Onehunga Electorate when apparent bus loads turned up to vote and each claimed to be someone on the roll. It was difficult for the scrutineers who couldn’t tell one from the other. This practice had been going on for some time. The Party decided to ignore it as the overall result would not be changed.

What is democracy?
Is it when a record number turn up to vote?
Even if many only finish up registering as a voter because a Party chases them to do it.
Then they are encouraged to vote early because they may not vote on the day.
They don’t really seem all that interested in their democratic rights.
Interesting in the U.S. elections, is a comparison between the length of the queues at polling station filming and a postal vote.

Looks like there was an error in the Arizona result. It was called too soon.

On Wednesday, a significant error was discovered that could affect the results of the presidential election in Arizona: Edison Research data, which major news organizations including The New York Times utilize to report voting results, reported that 98% of precincts in Arizona had been counted when in fact only 86% had been counted.

New York Times editor Patrick LaForge tweeted, “An error was found in the data feed from Edison Research (used by @nytimes and other news organizations) for Arizona results – 86 percent of ballots have ben counted, not 98%. NYT has not called the state for Biden, though he still leads.”

Whether Trump wins or not, this is absolutely a success for the Republicans and for Trump.

Trump showed that the Republican party is clearly able to reach a diverse range of voters, if they have the right message and image.

The GOP needs to learn from the good traits about Trump for 2024. DPF may not like it, but a complete repudiation of Trumpism is not the way forward. Some of Trumpism is worth continuing to pursue in to the future.

He is also saying that whilst its too close to call, there is evidence of serious voter fraud in Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin & Pennsylvania. He is a lawyer well versed in these matters, and he reckons there won’t be a decision until the lawyers have sorted it out.

As far as I know, it is not compulsory, Maggy. It is, however, if you want to vote in the primaries (i.e., choosing the candidates for the Presidency, say). Which makes sense, else you would have Trump supporters, say, voting for both Trump and helping to pick his opponent.

        No, she could say that she had no affiliation – i.e., independent. She certainly didn’t, as you claimed, have to nominate a political party.
        
        Perhaps this is your problem. Candidates with no affiliation run as Independents, but that doesn’t mean that independent voters are necessarily affiliated with independent candidates (e.g., imagine a libertarian independent candidate and marxist independent voter).

  Hi Billy, voter turnout in Wisconsin, according to the US Elections project, is 82%, not 89%. I think you may be assessing turnout by looking at what proportion of registered voters voted. But turnout is measured by comparing voters to the eligible population.
  
  Wisconsin has had relatively high turnout before – in the 2004 election, which was fought in the shadow of the Iraq War and was almost as fierce as this contest, turnout was 72.4% In that year, Wisconsin had the second highest turnout in the US; this year it also has the second highest turnout, after Minnesota. The polling system has proven it is unreliable and at worst corrupt.

The results for Donald Trump so far prove that — no landslide and clear win for Biden yet and who knows if those ballot postal votes don’t actually favour Trump instead.

Is anyone in the global media going to be even slightly concerned with how many pollsters were shown up to be absolute frauds? or are they all just relieved that things can go back to the way it was before and will quietly sweep this under the rug.
I hope the Republicans in America fight like hell, this was way closer than many were lead to believe and if it wasn’t for the opposition stamping their foot on the scales Trump would have pulled off a historic upset. At about 4 a.m. Wednesday morning Eastern Time the New York Times reported that 138,339 votes in Michigan had been dropped in for counting. A so called vote dump. Okay. That’s right. But consider what the New York Times reported;
Biden got 138,339 of that vote dump.
If it was Breitbart reporting that, I would doubt the figures, but the New York Times!!!

The problem for Trump is that these red states have decided to count the mail in votes last so that all of these votes are mail in. But they are also in urban districts. So Georgia is back in play and Pennsylvania votes are likely to favour Biden.

      Soz, no offense intended there – but on a more serious note I did see an article a few years back on the web where the practice you linked is used quite regularly in a country bordering Europe and the Middle East to overcome the unintended premarital decisions of individuals that would become otherwise problematic for their future. In Michigan, over 130000 vote were found overnight – all for Biden, not a single one for Trump. FB factcheckers say false, but if true then The Dems are doing what they always do. Cheat.
Btw, never needed factcheckers until the truth started coming out

Man we have a 3rd world election system here.

I wish every state had Florida’s election system its so smooth and thanks to its data API, it gives you real time data of vote by party so you know who has voted and you have county total voters.

Also AP, Fox News etc are complete garbage Florida should of been immediately called once the pan-handle closed as Dade had reported and at that point there was no way Biden could win it he had a 0% chance at that point

    A Democrat needs at least a 300k lead to carry Florida.
    
    Joe Biden was sitting around 100K after VBM + IPEV and this is the math’s part the ED votes were no where near enough to get him to 300K in fact they were showing he would drop ED Went insane Republican everywhere in Florida, again the DATA being fed by the Florida API system was CLEARLY showing this

        You would know the outstanding votes instead of garbage like “we think we have about 40,000 votes here and maybe another bag over there etc etc”
        
        When you have such a stupid system like that once they get close there is always an air of fraud about them.
        
        Florida which was my original point fixed it because of 2000 and then finally fixed it in 2018 when they got rid of Brenda “I’ve always got a couple of bags of votes somewhere” Snipes

Good article for climate-change sceptics (and for climate-change believers) in October edition of Wired.

One Paul Ford writes about the software behind the doom forecasts: “As far as I can tell the bad software sweepstakes has been won (or lost) by climate change folks.”

He tells of looking at climate-change models, and in part, finding:

“So the software people get amazing tools that let them build amazing apps, and the climate people get lots of Fortran. This is one of the weirdest puzzles of this industry. We have these tools for making new, wonderful tools, and yet the people who need help the most are using these old tools and methods.”

  Started life as a Fortran programmer developing software products and later on ended up working @ Shell’s large research labs in the Hague where we did modelling (among other things) and even got to write stuff that ran on Cray Supercomputer.
  
  It’s brilliant at processing large numbers efficiently, supporting performance mechanisms such as vector (parallel) processing. It’s just as brilliant at enabling very difficult to support and debug code. Otherwise, it’s a reasonably crap language as languages go. Large complex stuff is a nightmare to support.
  
  I’ve also seen examples of researcher and academic written code and they’re generally poor at the basics to support maintainability. Poor commenting, poor error handling and poor design.
  
  One of the reasons I’m suspicious of the climate models is they would be effectively impossible to prove they’re even doing what they’re meant to do never mind whether what they’re meant to do accurately reflects the real world.

( Actually, following the US Democratic Party policy, I would give them as many votes as I can !
“Name Suppression” is , as far as I am concerned, the most repulsive bit of NZ law which has ever existed.

Cheating in Michigan. A post office worker says that he was directed by superiors to find any ballots they could in mailboxes etc, collect them by hand and backdate them by stamp to yesterday’s date. The Office of the Inspector General for the USPS has contacted them and said they are aware and are investigating.

Stats NZ uses an Orange with an orange hair swish as a Trump icon on their facebook post about trade stats. They said it was light hearted and the reactions were postive. If the Aussie govt used an icon of a Horse with teeth in their facebook posts about trade with nz would we be laughing?

Assuming that Biden gets in (as now seems likely after the mess has died down in a few weeks), China will **definitely** invade Taiwan now.

Biden won’t stop them. He’s a doddery, frail old man who will probably be dead in six months. All he will do is go “harrumph!” and go to bed with a hot cocoa.

Oh, and the Democrats HATE Russia. Look for US-Russia relations to drop to crisis levels. Putin is no fool and will take **full advantage** of the weak, lame-duck worse-than-Carter Biden administration.

Wouldn’t be surprised for terrorism to rocket up too. The Dems think that terrorists are just “poor misguided people who didn’t have enough cuddles at home.”
I have a bridge to sell to anyone who thinks the Dems will fight terrorism.

Founders of the Royal Society of New Zealand must have been inspired by the Royal Society of Britain, one of the world’s greatest and oldest scientific academies. Newton, Darwin, Einstein have been fellows.

But how science-based is the New Zealand Royal Society? Brian Boyd, whose field is literature, specifically the work of the Russian-American novelist Nabokov, has won the NZ society’s Rutherford Medal, our country’s top research honour.

This is the first year that NZ Royal Society awards have been extended to humanities.

Why didn’t the Woke just set up some sort of soft-science society and awards? Not sure that literature research would have qualified even for these.

Latest NZ Royal Society award recipients include Otago medical researchers for work on asthma, and there are two awards for grassland and plant technology. These are definitely core science fields for New Zealand.

Among other awards, however, is a specifically Maori one of for – a woven flax device to reduce sudden infant death syndrome “while supporting bed sharing”. Another goes to a person for work on “Maori language revitalisation”.

The humanities – the soft sciences – are taking ever greater roles in our universities. How can these disciplines take New Zealand forward?
