      Heh, I recall DG getting quite wound up a few months by Maggie Pie’s satire, so mentioned the latter in a reply to him (unsure how that went down as I didn’t check the responses at the time).
      
      Anyway “MP’s” satire is either really funny (vote up) or sometimes crosses the boundary (and when really naughty, vote down … I’m sure MP doesn’t mind as (s)he rolls with the punches)!
      
      I think the give away for MP’s recent (naughty) post about Sir Bob Jones is the fact that in the 1970’s Sir Bob was too busy running a business, supporting some of the most flamboyant and fabulous “LGBT personalities” of the time (well fancy that Ricardo Dimwit Turd!) and for his excellent billboards by the Basin Reserve that mocked the politicians of the day (so being a “student” would have been very most unlikely! But yeah MP sure crossed the boundary with that post)!
      
      Wouldn’t it be just awesome, in these PC gone mad times, if Sir Bob could resurrect these billboards and mock our current generation of “woke” politicians and wannabes! After all, why not, when the MSM won’t!

  He was a fuckwit – BUT – he was also bloody funny with responses……. much like Maggie Pie ALWAYS is!!!
  
  Nasska, Johnboy, Dime, Redbaiter….. would all remember him. Probably DG also as from memory he spoke to JB, Dime etc. often back in those times.

  I used to pump petrol, vertically, downwards, into his twin-tank Jag(s) at Central Service Station on Jervois Quay in the mid 80s. The filling points were on top of both rear panels just behind the rear screen. I can’t recall whether he used to come in at the old site, where the Michael Fowler Centre is now, but he certainly did to the relocated site opposite ‘Robert Jones House’ I think it was called, or similar, regardless it was where he was based and the location of the Yangtze Restaurant.
  
  The Jag was tough to fill quickly, but without blowback/spillage as the tanks approach completely full. Always had a clean rag handy to quickly mop up and spills and hope like hell Sir Bob had shot inside to sign his account and didn’t notice. 🙂
  
  Always a good customer and never chatty.
  
  The old man’s partnership leased the third and fourth floors of Borthwick House on The Terrace off Sir Bob starting in the early 70s (from memory) and up until years or so ago (the old boy retired in 2000).
  
  He said the same; Bob/his firm good to deal with.

    Probably a good strategy Swifty. I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Sir Robert but I’ve always followed his various efforts to wind-up officious wind-bags with interest.
    
    One would been his promotion of Carmen Rupe in the Wellington Mayoral campaign of 1977 which was a direct attack on the incumbent wankers of the City Council chambers.
    
    But best of all was his blazing row with a traffic cop on the Hutt Road in 1975. At the time I was chauffeuring livestock from the Wairarapa to the Ngauranga abattoir on a regular basis & being hassled mercilessly by the morons of the then Transport Dept. Their arrogance was unbelievable but abated a little after Sir Robert sued the wanker for unlawful detention.
    
    His willingness to fight unreasonable authoritarian attitudes endeared him to this humble ex truckie. 🙂

Not being blessed in the looks department himself, Bob Jones has always been obsessed with how others look. However, apart from that bit of petty meanness, he is spot on about Maggie Pie. For some reason she (?) seems to think her partner’s unpleasant opinions are so hilarious they should be shared with the rest of us. If she is a woman I’d prefer she used her own voice and her own opinions and stop relaying what others have said.
If we believe Bob Jones, and I do in this case, we should ignore not only what her vulgar partner supposedly says but also the unreliable memories of his mother.
What an unsavoury household they must be as they cook up their unappetising tales.

  Looking at the dates is very interesting. As Sir Bob was a student in 1958 that makes him 19 yo. Let’s say the mother was about 20 at the time then she had a son at age 22 as was the fashion which puts maggies partners age at about 60. Maybe there is a 5 year gap between their age but most likely nothing dramatic.

Surprised to come across Sir Bob’s most unexpected response…… LOL!!

Unfortunately, it seems poor old BJ must be suffering from failing eyesight, and after watching his recent appearance on television, very possibly a number of other maladies.

The one basic mistake Sir Bob has made when transposing my post, was that I did not say “…..when HE (sick) was a student”, but rather, the reference was to ‘my partner’s mum’ and reads “….when SHE was a student”. This of course changes the entire context of his reply.

Ma and the rest of the girls would all have been in their early 20’s at the time, thus putting BJ in his mid-thirties (?)
So you can see that he got the most basic of details wrong, rendering his response somewhat nonsensical.

As for wagering I’m ‘fat and ugly’, that would be akin to me wagering Sir Bob has completely lost his marbles.

  James P: I disagree. To claim – especially regarding a member of Sir Bob’s generation – that not only did they not “stand their round” but had women pay for their drinks is deeply insulting.
  
  I’m sure it’s all completely changed in this Brave New World we all live in, but back in the day there was very much an etiquette surrounding public (or student) bar behaviour. First and foremost, if you were in a drinking “school” you always paid your round when it was your turn. Second, any fighting took place outside – something Trevor Mallard clearly forgot. And even into the 70’s, there was no swearing when “ladies” were present.
  
  That is a somewhat long winded explanation as to why Sir Bob took umbrage at MP’s rather silly and clearly inaccurate comment.

  Speaking of Sir Rob’s books, does anyone know if his most weighty, insightful and intellectual tome “The First Twelve Months – The Achievements of The Third Labour Government”, is still available to buy? I would kill for a personally signed copy.
  
  It’s a prescient insight (and a very a fair and objective one too) into the ability, the workings and the outcomes of Labour Governments.
  
  It’s a thorough, well researched and cogently argued contribution to the political and economic literature on the analysis of New Zealand Labour. It’s a must-have for ALL libraries and should probably be a compulsory read for all first-year political science students.
  
  I was wondering if Sir Rob has thought about doing an update to his book to incorporate the achievements of the current 5th Labour Government? I think a chapter on Phil Twyford, for example, would lend itself very well to the book and would be of immense value to future historians who may wish to study the events of our times?

    Not sure what Sir Bob has planned, but I’ve already heard there’s a book out titled “Documenting the Success of the 5th Labour Government”.

I can believe that Sir Robert didn’t frequent pubs (or bars) preferring restaurants instead perhaps, but I note that the photo on the cover of “Memories of Muldoon” (1997) taken at the launch of “Jones on Property” (1977) and also in the photo within the same tome taken at the launch of “The First Twelve Months” (1974) he is holding a wine glass. A semi full wine glass in the case of the latter photo. So the not a “regular imbiber” claim may be called into question.
