        Davis is apparently not commenting, because this is an “operational issue”. That may be so, but it’s an operational issue which happened on his watch three days ago, and is ongoing, within a depratment he has ministerial responsibility for. Silence is not good enough Kelvin.

  What does it say about a society when a group of (predominantly, if not all) Maori prisoners can hold the authorities to ransom, while ostensibly being held captive no less? When legitimate authority is rejected, then no one has a handle on the situation, resulting in chaos. Clearly, there seems to be no expectation at all for some groups to comply with the law of the land.

  * How did prisoners manage to get on the roof?
  * Where did they get the matches to start the fire, given that prisons are supposedly smokefree?
  * Where did the prisoners get the cellphones they are using to ring the media?
  
  But most importantly:
  
  *Where is Kelvin Davis?
  
  This looks like a systemic failure by Corrections staff. A prison block has been rendered uninhabitable, and still the Minister is MIA.

    In 1965 a portion of Waikeria (at that time a Borstal then re-designated youth prison) was converted temporarily to ‘maximum security’ to house the maximum security prisoners displaced from Mt Eden (they were initially housed in the military detention facility which used to be at Ardmore). Some of the young prisoners who had trade or welding skills helped with the conversion work and were praised for their efforts. Nowadays they would probably have received non-custodial sentences.

  We can, however, control many of the things that are most relevant to us. Not everything but we can make some differences.

Happy New Year all. I note that the Australian prime minister has just changed a line in the Australian national anthem from “young” to being “one” and free. The change is apparently meant to demonstrate Australia’s “inclusiveness”.

Sounds like more virtue signalling to me but I wondered why the Aussie PM didn’t also do something about that hideous line “our home is girt by sea” while he was at it. Every time I hear that line I cringe. Isn’t it obvious that Australia is “girt” (surrounded) by sea?

How could we replace that line – “our beaches are sandy” perhaps? Obvious again of course but at least it sounds better. ?

  You only have to look at the divided states of Australia to know clearly that very few have a clue what they are doing to combat this scourge.
  The Covid testing commander in Victoria is a transport logistics guru. Mr weetie’s packet man.
  What makes any politician a so called expert on Covid?
  They are as good as where they seek their advice.
  I had the pleasure of taking a chartered train through China as Tour Manager at the height of sars. We made the 14 day journey from Alashankou to Beijing without any cases of sars. There was myself and a GP making all the decisions with the Chinese train Manager. We used common sense and kept to ourselves. One guy did get a cold and was treated like a leper by some other paxs.
  We were the last foreign group to leave China.
  When I got home I self isolated for 10 days then went on a South Pacific cruise. Went back to China with a tour within days. There was no hype and melt down like we have now.
  Elimination is impossible, this could go on for years and years. Blind leading the blind.
  I said to my former boss, we have lived through the best times in the last 100 years, unfortunately in our 70’s our luck has run out, life will never be what we lived through. It is today’s kids I really feel sorry for, they may go through a really shit life of debt and conformity, it could well happen the way things are going.
  The left are really wishing for what they truly don’t know the consequences of.

  The fact that this guy got a knighthood illustrates that the honours do not warrant excellence. This guy is also on the record for decrying ‘neo liberalism’ and the marginalisation of the poor by the harsh hand of capitalism. Yet he now accepts a title of “Sir”.
  
  And some advice. Find something better to do with your life. I enjoy reading diverse opinions and I would like to see more commentators here arguing points of view that are different to mine. Oh, so the Waikeria Prison debacle is not a riot, it’s a protest, so says Maori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi. Another boring, woke remark by a New Zealand MP. Fires being lit and shower doors being ripped off is only a protest? Perhaps Comrade Ardern could make another ”be kind” statement and even offer to buy the land, on our behalf and gift it back to the prisoners. I know Kelvin Davis is very busy these days, but I’m sure he could be made Minister of The Team, and get these prisoners back into the fold. Andrew Little will jump for joy because inmate numbers will come down even more.

  I belief that building is a hundred years old and was due to be demolished anyway. It’s not exactly a great loss.
  
  In the meantime Kelvin Davis says he won’t intervene until the situation is resolved by Corrections. Unfortunately Corrections don’t seem to have the ability to resolve the situation without either caving in, as they see it, or making it worse as the public will see it (apart from the hardliners).
  These guys do seem to have some genuine issues. It’s not some sort of gang warfare.

No. Sea level rise has been negligible. There is zero evidence that “climate change” is causing more extreme coastal erosion. Coastal erosion is a natural phenomenon. If you could go back in time 200 years the coast of New Zealand would look different in most areas. River mouths, beaches, rocky headlands would all be different shapes and in different locations.

I don’t know how New Zealand journalists can get away with writing pure lies that are not backed up by science. Yes it is conceivable that climate change induced sea level rise could make some areas more vulnerable to coastal erosion over the next hundred years. But this article is stating that the erosion that is happening now is caused by “climate change”. It is shocking journalism.

  I live on the Kapiti Coast.
  The sand dunes at the mouth of the Waimeha Stream have been retreating for all of the last 30-odd years we have been there. Every so often ( maybe twice a year ) the Regional Council spends thousands and thousands to hire contractors to straighten out the stream and keep it away from the dunes. Bloody hopeless. In a couple of weeks it is back on its own course. Total waste of money.
  What is interesting is that the erosion of the dunes due to river, wind and tides constantly exposes ancient logs which must have been buried deep under the sand ages ago. These logs were probably carried down rivers and deposited on the beach as happens today.
  So at some time in the past the high tides must have reached inland much further than at present.
  As you say, it has all happened before, many times, as it will in future.

“I had never been hit or abused, until the day the men came to take me away. I still don’t even know why.”
That’s how Sam began to tell me his story at a marae in Whangarei.
Sam is now 60. The gang patches on his face still vivid.
His life has been spent in and out of prison. But now, he has had enough.
Enough of the violence. Enough of the P. Enough of ‘The Life.’
Sam was just 10 years-old when strangers arrived at his house in Mangere and took him away. His only crime was that he was born into a whānau of 16 children.
They took him away from his home, away from his family, and put him on a train to a boys’ home in Levin.
He had never known abuse or violence in his life until he walked through their doors.
Four years later – and Sam was put on another train and sent back to Auckland.
He told me that when he stepped off the train in Auckland he had changed so much as a person that it no longer felt like home. He felt like he no longer belonged there.
Within two weeks he had joined a gang – a new home, a new family he would remain with for the next 48 years.
When Sam told me his story – in fact when Māori across the country doing time tell me their stories – I can’t help but ask the question:
Why didn’t we do something? As a government, as Māori: Why didn’t we help?
…
There are 5000 Sams in our prisons. And they include his children, and his grandchildren.
We need to do something together to create a different future for Māori and for their whanau.
We need to break the cycle, connect them to their people, help them, and have hope for them. [1]

National’s Corrections spokesman Simeon Brown has put out a statement on Waikeria this afternoon, although you’re unlikely to see it reported in any media; here ’tis:

WAIKERIA PRISON RIOT MUST BE INVESTIGATED

A full investigation must be undertaken into how the Waikeria Prison riot started and has been allowed to continue so long, National’s Corrections spokesperson Simeon Brown says.

“Waikeria Prison has suffered significant damage from this riot, which has forced Corrections to move hundreds of prisoners around the country to keep them safe.

“An independent investigation must be undertaken into how this riot started and whether the response to it has been adequate.

“Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis needs to show some leadership. He should visit Waikeria Prison to make sure those trying to resolve this situation have all the support they need.

“It is hard to believe this riot has been allowed to continue for four days. Control of the prison must be regained swiftly to prevent any further damage.

“I want to send my appreciation to all the Corrections staff and emergency service personnel involved in responding to the riot. Their wellbeing is critical in these difficult situations.”

It’s hard to disagree with any of what Brown says, which makes Davis’ refusal to do anything to resolve the riot even more incomprehensible. This is simply another failure from our government.

  We’ve just had some neighbors over for a drink.
  One of them was saying he sees this as being a harbinger for the introduction of Marai Based Justice.
  Those found guilty will be sentenced to remain on the Marai, consume a crate of DB each day, and must become proficient in Te Reo.
  
  My partner quipped it sounded like a verse from ‘Hotel California’

  They got shields and protective clothing and power tools and other makeshift weapons. They have also got in the drugs.

With regard to the NYE riot at Whangamata last night, the Thames-Coromandel Mayor Sandra Goudie said:

“This has been a different year and we weren’t prepared for this.
The decisions we made [to manage the district over summer] were pre-Covid and the large number of domestic visitors wasn’t taken into account.”
Where has she been for the last 10 or 11 months?
The rest of NZ was resigned to the fact that overseas tourists would not be here in the foreseeable future, that New Zealanders were encouraged to go on holiday in NZ to prop up the industry, and that this had happened to a remarkable degree. Witness the constant influx of domestic visitors to Queenstown.
Did this woman actually believe that Whangamata would be exempt from this influx this year ?
Did she and the council do nothing to prepare for the inevitable crowds? What a doozy.
