New Zealand’s most open and transparent government ever strikes again; from Simeon Brown’s Facebook page (with my emphasis added):

Today I have been declined again the opportunity to visit Waikeria and receive a briefing from the Prison Director about the ongoing violent riot which is taking place at Waikeria Prison.

This decline was from Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis despite s161 of the Corrections Act allowing Members of Parliament to visit a prison at any time. I have requested the legal basis for my decline.

Here are some of the questions that I would be asking if I had the opportunity to visit:

– How many Corrections Officers are currently on site responding to the incident and is that an adequate level of support?
– What other support might be needed from other Govt departments?
– Was a tactical response made immediately as the riot began, and if not, is that standard operating procedure?
– How did the rioters get access from their unit to other parts of the prison to eventually control and destroy the entire prison?
– How did the rioters get access to matches or lighters given these are contraband within a prison? Our prisons are smoke free.
– It appears the rioters have access to cellphones and are freely communicating to those outside the prison. How did this happen given cellphones are also contraband?
– What is the plan to bring this riot to an end given it is now entering a sixth day and the rioters are showing no signs of giving up?
– What is the estimated cost of the damage to the Prison so far?

There are many other questions which need answering – and a full investigation will be required of the causes of the riot and the response to it.

Again my thoughts are with Corrections Officers across the country and those at Waikeria responding to this situation at this difficult time. My thoughts are also with their families.

Brown is handing this very well. He’s asking the questions that many New Zealanders want answers for, and the longer Davis and the PM deny him access to staff at Waikeria, the more it looks as though they have something to hide, and little will to resolve the riot. It also increases the likelihood that Corrections staff will start talking to Brown “off the record”, if in fact that has not already happened.

This is fact becoming a clustershambles of Labour’s own making. Oh dear; how sad; never mind.

  It has been said earlier today on the RNZ that concern is being raised that other prisoners in the other prisons are looking at how to riot – sorry complain, and the authorities and the Prison staff are worried as the prisoners are looking at taking an advantage as they watch what is happening a Waikeria as they have nothing to lose either.

    There is no problem in other prisons, AI would be better looking at crappier prisons overseas (eg Kerobokan). The prisoners are not ‘caught’, they can surrender at any time knowing they will be treated humanely (they are not facing the cat as they would have a few centuries ago). So AI should just advise them to give themselves up.

  I spoke with a naughty man who did six weeks at Waikeria. He was involved in their milking shed. They supply Fonterra. He said that if the drinking water was used to clean the cowshed plant then Fonterra would have graded the milk and would eventually refuse collection of the milk. The cowshed was on a separate water supply and he used to take plastic bottles of drinking water from the cowshed to the cells after milking, as the water available in the cells was so terrible.

      My acquaintance got three months for failing to file GST returns. Reduced to six weeks for good behaviour. He was placed in the dairy unit as he was a sort of responsible person who, unlike his darker inmates, was least likely to vandalise the intricate milking machinery.
      Responsible? Yeah, his GST accounting was hopeless. Possibly the fact that he told several tax dept inspectors to go and get phucked was what really got him in pokey.
      I have spent a huge sum from my own pocket, not some company or partnership or any other corporate vehicle, on information technology, and I have found my acquaintance more trustworthy and helpful than any IT expert.

    A prison riot is not newsworthy to an organisation captured by re-writing history at the behest of an authoritarian but very popular government.
    $tuff is not a traditional, reliable news outlet,

  Maggy, to answer your question: At this stage it is too late for him to front to the media.
  
  He’s useless in front of the media and it has now been blown up into a huge thing. He will embarrass the govt if he becomes the face of this. They need someone more competent and forceful to address this issue. The second last thing Cindy wants is for Kelvin to tackle this.
  
  But the flip side is that this is a going to leave a stain on whoever does front this. Cindy could but it would taint her image. So therefore facing this is the last thing she wants to do herself.
  
  I think all they will do at this stage is double down on “it’s a corrections operational matter: no comment”. Anything else has too much negative consequences.

  I am wondering about the prisoners’ complaints. On the surface they seem quite valid and it seems reasonable for prisoners to have towels and clothes laundered at reasonable intervals, or be given access to hot water, soap, clothes line etc for this. There would surely be a process for this and there is a means for prisoners to complain lack of such things. If their complaints got nowhere then perhaps one could have a bit of sympathy for them. This is a matter that needs to be followed up. However the prison management probably got fed up with these items being abused etc so was not prepared to provide replacements, laundry service etc. A potential problem in prisons is blocked toilets leading to flooded cells so staff do limit available items to minimise this happening.

    Reportedly at least 4 of the rooftop dwellers are 501’s. Seems the Australian deportation holding cells were comparatively not that bad after all.
    
    Waikeria Tophouse was due for demolition so no doubt very run down with dodgy pipes. However, prisons are run on systems, was there no alternative bottled water, was fresh laundry not delivered weekly? Theses are easy things to check.

  He won’t front because for him its a lose-lose situation. Clearly the “go-early, go-hard” approach doesn’t appeal when the problem is a pile of hardened East Polynesian crims. This is not a “protest” but this is what it will turn out to be. Kelvin Davis will be on strict instructions from on high to not front and stay low. Ditto with Little.
  
  We all know what should have happened when the first crims got onto the roof and started fires. Monsoon buckets and the military to assist Corrections to coral up all those that took part in the action followed by swift transfer to maximum security. What will happen is that it will be found that it was all “our fault” for locking up people who are a blight on society.

This series will attempt to dilute reader anger at Stuff’s grovelling, shameful, ultra-Woke apology for White settlement of New Zealand.

  I buy the local paper solely for local news and the puzzles page. I don’t believe a word of National news or overseas news but it does give me a vague idea of what’s happening. I have seriously considered not renewing my subscription each year for several years. On top of that I’m totally fed up with the maorification of everything as well as on the TV too.   Interestingly, the Press was founded as a medium to oppose the construction of the Lyttelton to Christchurch railway which was being promoted by the Superintendent of Canterbury William Sefton Moorhouse (aka Railroad Bill). The Press’s opposition was as effective as Canute’s opposition and the railway soon found its way down to Port Chalmers and Dunedin and beyond. Not sure the Press would be too keen to empathise this aspect of its existence.

The gangster that got killed in Christchurch was, of course, such a nice guy.

According to the Herald he was a “big teddy bear”, “the biggest softy ever”, “was never nasty” and he looked after prostitutes.

No, he was a bloody pimp that stood over and exploited vulnerable women and had current weapons and theft charges. If so, he was probably on bail and should have had bail conditions which he would have been breaching.

Nice teddy bears do not go to gang New Years parties and they certainly don’t do business for them. Nor do they end up before the courts for criminal offending.

Personally I’m happy to see a good start to the New Year. If we can maintain this gang attrition rate then there might be some inroads by the end of the year. Unfortunately they’re increasing faster than this.

Nothing will bring home more to the sheeple the sheer incompetence and criminal negligence of this useless government, than this cringeworthy embarrassing, & possibly lethal shambles.

Leadership is MIA (on their hols more like it) and a hands-off kinder-gentler handling of case hardened crims is supposed to work wonders .

Tell Her “She’s dreamin”.

Get ready a February vote of no confidence and see how Labour’s Maori caucus reacts!

    Family member was in Wgn city co-incidentally at the 2020 Santa parade on Lambton Quay.
    This was the “family” event which was selfishly hijacked by vegan protesters brandishing crude, sexually explicit signs – never mind the children, vegetables matter more.
    They apparently had a permit from the Council to do this.
    Will be interesting to see the Extinction Rebellion placards – I guess some sexual content will offend,

For three years, most of us have known that Kelvin Davis is simply not up to it.

After five days of prisoners taking over and destroying a wing of one of our biggest prisons, he is nowhere to be seen.

There are only 16 prisoners. They aren’t trained. This should have been dealt with and resolved within 24 hours.

But Davis is incapable of thinking on his feet. He simply doesn’t have the intellectual capacity or nerves for politics or running a government department.

Corrections is one of the most important departments in the country. It plays a major role in the safety of New Zealanders and is the last resort for attempting to rehabilitate criminals.

Kelvin Davis does not understand his job. He believes that by simply reducing prison numbers and using ‘Te Ao Maori’ concepts, he is succeeding in dealing with Maori offending, and thus half of New Zealand offenders.

Gang numbers have risen steeply under Labour.

The number of assaults on prison staff have increased under Labour.

Community Corrections staff now have larger numbers of offenders to manage, with continual staff shortages in both prisons and the community.

The Department’s ‘Hokai Rangi’ strategy was created as the Maori strategy but was adopted as the department’s entire strategy. Daily articles on the Corrections intranet website express great joy at the inter-prison kapa haka competitions and tikanga programmes.

Meanwhile, Maori prisoners would rather have basics like toilet paper, a supply of clean towels, sheets and clothes.

This is typical of this government. A virtue signalling facade of care, with a logistical failure undermining anything their ideas may have accomplished.

The media, particularly Maori media, have protected Kelvin Davis for three years. Jacinda Ardern and her party have been doing the same. He’s simply invisible as a Minister and he won’t ever be capable of running anything more complicated than a school.

Davis must go. In just two months we have already seen how compromised this government is to the demands of the far left.

Hands up anyone who thinks Kelvin Davis’ decision to remain silent over the riot at Waikeria was made in isolation?

At the very least, Davis, or his most senior advisor, will have contacted the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, which is in essence the same as contacting the PM herself, She, of course, is currently holidaying at Tairua, not Tokelau, as some have speculated.

This is rapidly turning into a massive own goal for Labour, and the decision to have both Davis and the PM make no comment is having the unintended consequence of uniting the political left and right. As the riot enters a sixth day, and it becomes more and more evident that most of Waikeria is being rendered unusable, at a huge cost to the taxpayer, the PM will enter the 2021 political year very much on the back foot.

‘They will strike’ – Chief Ombudsman’s warning over less mental health treatment for prisoners in crowded prisons – 28 February, 2018

Prison overcrowding means less work on prisoners’ serious mental health needs who then become “very dangerous” to the public when released, says Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier.

“They will strike,” he has warned.

Boshier said overcrowding was affecting the ability for the Department of Corrections to provide mental health care, rehabilitation and programmes intended to make prisoners functional citizens.

Our prisons are bursting at the seams and Corrections is seeking Government approval for the 3000-bed mega prison in Waikato. In the meantime, it has expanded double-bunking, reopened closed prisons and is getting prebuilt cells shipped in from China.

The expansion of Waikeria Prison has been spurred by repeatedly inaccurate prison population forecasts from the Ministry of Justice which miscalculated the effect of “tough on crime” policies.

The mega prison-plan goes to Cabinet for approval next month but runs contrary to the Government’s intent to reduce the prison population and Minister of Justice Andrew Little’s intent to focus criminal justice reform on “fixing” inmates.

The current prison population sits around 10,700 and is projected to keep rising as high as 15,000 by 2025.
Boshier said rehabilitation had been affected, along with programmes intended to prepare prisoners for release into the community. [1]

While it may appear a question to be answered is “What is Davis doing now?”, another question is “What has Davis been doing for the past three years?”
And is “reducing prisoner numbers, while totals are projected to keep rising” not an oxymoron, or at least just a little moronic?

  The idea of pre-built cells – and all moveable cells – is sensible.
  
  Prejudice against them resembles that against movable school rooms a decade or two ago, when shifting population in cities meant some schools were overcrowded and while others were part-empty.
  
  Movable school rooms, or school blocks, to match supply and demand was (and is) a logical move, but met an illogical social prejudice. Moveable buildngs, whether houses or school rooms, have illogically ranked lower socially.

Sandy Grant Gordon, great-grandson of the founder of the founder of the Glenfiddich distillery, began marketing single malt whisky abroad when Scotland was exporting blended scotch. Single malts were drunk virtually only in Scotland.

The Wall Street Journal in its obituary quotes an early Glenfiddich advertisement as the world market for single malts was opening:

“Sit when you drink Glenfiddich, you may never stand for a blended Scotch again.”

In 2019, Glenfiddich was the world’s largest selling single-malt scotch.

Sandy Grant Gordon was head of Scotland’s richest family. His great love was not whisky, but bird watching. Sandy Grant Gordon’s father was chairman of the company, and his mother was a medical doctor.

I’ve decided to review my ‘social media presence’ this year, with a view to cutting it back somewhat. For a start, Instagram is no longer the friendly place it used to be. There is sooo much nastiness displayed lately, that I’m considering quitting it altogether.
When I first began posting there, it was mainly pics of our holiday destinations, the food & wines we were enjoying at various restaurants, plus any new designer gear i was wearing. Things that a lot of people found interesting and which used to get me hundreds of likes and really fab comments.

But now, take last night for instance. I posted a pic of us eating at the fab Thai restaurant in Whangaparoa. I just logged in to to see the responses…..only 2 ‘likes’, and a comment from some anonymous dickhead that sez, “Hope you and your boyfriend choke ya stupid bitch”

Wood, alongside on-again-off-again Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell, has been at the forefront of President Donald Trump’s hopeless attempt to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s decisive victory in the Nov. 3 election. Besides filing a slew of conspiratorial lawsuits alleging election fraud that have been laughed out of court, Wood has urged Georgian Republicans not to vote in next week’s pivotal Senate runoffs because of his belief that the election will be “rigged” and has filed an emergency petition with the Supreme Court to halt the Jan. 5 election….”

The minister should not travel to such an event. He should simply state his support for the professionals, which Davis has done.

All the delay means is (a) crims come out as heroes to the feral leftist idiotic menagerie – but I repeat myself; and (b) the taxpayer has to suck up paying a far far higher damage repair invoice.   That’s clearly a poke at the Maori MP who wore a hat in the house.
  
  And last but not least he tells us they are releasing crims into society , how safe are we ?

  But hang on a moment, whether one agrees with Maori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi or not, the fact is he has done Davis’ job for him by ending the protest riot.
  
  Davis could have done this himself, if he could have been bothered to front in his official capacity (rather than hide behind Corrections staff, whom were doing his job by communicating with the media)!

While I don’t condone breaking the law being locked up 23 hours a day in the same cell is torture; having to ask for toilet paper should be unnecessary, as is asking for clean clothes.Clean water is a basic human right as the rich people found out in Havelock North.

I had to try and contact a client at Waikeria and it took 2 days to get a call through.
That is a breach of human rights as well.Prisoners are meant to have reasonable access to legal counsel.

I note none of this shit happened under National.

Labour’s ongoing problem is weak Ministers controlled by the Public Service.

Seriously, if you had a job to be allocated bagging chicken manure would you offer it to Kelvin Davis? No, why, because it would become a health and safety issue,

  If any member of the media is reading this (or happens to have grown a pair over the holidays) they should request an itemized list of goods (for the last year) from Foodstuffs/Progressive that are sent to the prisons under contract.
  
  Make the lists public.
  
  These prisoner claims are unsubstantiated by bone lazy media that for some reason likes to cuddle up to our prisoner classes. I guess they’re not the victims of these criminals after all.

  These people are in prison for a reason! They are not nice people. It takes a lot to be put into prison. Unless you are really terrible you get home detention. Despite best efforts, most of these people go on to re-offend after they get released.
  
  Prison offers many of these offenders a chance to re-abilitate, learn a profession, but few bother. It is sad, but that is what it is. I have a hard time shedding tears for those in prison. They cost us a lot of taxpayers dollars.

My partner just got back from having a few beers at the Surf Club. He was saying rumors are circulating that the whole #WaikeriaUprising could have been a staged event. The old wing was due to be demolished anyway. Construction of the new prison is well underway.
