What a piece of crap weak knees Kelvin Davis is, it was alright when he was in opposition to call out National with his lies and deceit but when it is the opposition’s turn to call out Kelvin Davis for his weak leadership and irresponsible behavior for being found wanting and nowhere to be seen tactics over this riot he prefers to blame National again for his own misgivings.

  I think what we are seeing is a pattern of behaviour. The weak response to prison riots being allowed to go on for days. Maori party “negotiators” being sent in that clearly favour the prisoners. No action taken to restore law and order.
  It’s consistent with previous behaviour. Ihaumato protestors being allowed to occupy private land, Shelley Bay the same, Maori roadblocks during covid lock down allowed to stop and question motorists and block them from the state highway.
  
  Let’s face it. There is one rule for Maori and one rule for everybody else. In our socialist paradise of Aotearoa everyone is equal but some are more equal than others.

    The outcome in my opinion was the best of a bad deal. Firstly no substantive concessions were granted to the prisoners, that was extremely important. If they had been, there would have been problems in other prisons. Secondly, by not dealing with the situation by brute force, Corrections avoided criticism of ill treatment etc. The prisoners involved now potentially suffer ‘downsides’. They will be held in higher security classification (with longer lockdown periods), in institutions further away from relatives. They will have an additional cumulative sentence imposed and while that may be mainly symbolic, they would in practice have to wait much longer for parole.
    I consider the Corrections Minister was right not to intervene (which seemed to be the situation) since any Corrections Minister would not have the expertise or skills for handling such situations. Similarly I do not think National MP’s could have contributed anything positive and should not have attempted to visit the prison even though they were entitled to under the law). The Maori Party co-leader might have achieved some reconciliation so his visit was justified (the late Kevin Ryan QC was called upon to settle down prison issues in Auckland which he did with apparent success). However the Minister definitely needs to be involved in the aftermath. Of particular concern is whether there were circumstances which led to the trouble which were because the prison was not being properly run especially with prisoners not being provided with things they were supposed to be provided with. It seems that while many claims are unlikely to be substantiated, there are possibly some valid claims in the mix.

  And which is EXACTLY what Labour MPs did on a weekly, often daily, basis 2008-17.
  
  I do hope that when this government falls those who replace it will show the backbone and steel necessary to laugh at and pour scorn on Labour MPs who attempt to create new political beat ups.
  
  What are political beat ups? Every single issue which meets the following criteria:
  
  1. Was a supposed ‘crisis’ when National were in and the subject of daily news media coverage, often with Labour MPs leading the charge; and
  
  2. Still exists today, and is often worse; and
  
  3. You never, or almost never, hear about it today in the news media.
  
  I can think of tens of issues which fit the bill.
  
  The absolute classic in my view was the TPPA. It was to be the end of civilisation as we knew it, but then Labour got in, changed a clause or two, slapped a new label on it and passed it otherwise unchanged – and all the marches in the streets, hikoi, media outlets all suddenly, and dutifully, went quiet.
  
  It was a total beat up from the get go – and shows, to me, exactly why Labour was so quick to throw our money at news media organisations since Covid’s arrival.
  
  They are hand and glove.

    Yes agree Swifty regarding TPP. In all honesty it was not explained very well by National and by doing so treated avg NZers as being not worthy of all the information.
    Much the same as Americans under Obama and hence Democrats lost by not treating the average voter with respect .
    Anyway the TPP was only about “who writes the rules” and how business is conducted in the region. China or the West,
    You would be foolish not to think all our Pacific countries are not infected with Chinese influence ( Much the same as Africa) and the TPP was a way to enforce “democratic” values and trade.
    This was never explained logically hence all the Union ( Teachers mostly ) members protesting and scaremongering etc.
    As I explained to one such protester, Instead of spending 3 hrs protesting ( with kids in tow) How about reading about whats it really about.
    I mean the information is out there if so inclined to find it.

  It is weird that he is deputy leader but not deputy PM. He is kind of being a willing partner to his own humiliation by his colleagues. Any strong politician would have said to the PM “I’m going to be deputy PM or I’m going to resign and go to the backbench”. I think this guy knows he is not up to any job as a Minister. But his alternative career probably pays a quarter of what he gets paid now.
  
  I guess if he continues to screw up, his next appointment will be “Minister for weird stuff nobody cares about” which is where Phil Twyford has been banished to.

It is difficult to think of a better metaphor with which to illustrate the party’s political mission than its co-leader, under the disdainful gaze of the authorities, leading 16 parched, burned, bleeding but unbroken prisoners out of danger and into safety. Surely, somewhere in New Zealand, a young Maori musician is already composing a song to celebrate Waititi’s success. He’s earned one.
  It is difficult to imagine anyone bothering to write a song for the Corrections Minister, Kelvin Davis. Throughout the six days of the crisis at Waikeria, the Minister maintained an obdurate silence. The resolution of this crisis, New Zealanders were given to understand, was an “operational matter” – something best left to the public servants and corrections officers on the spot. The very same public servants and corrections officers whose actions – and failure to take action – were responsible for sparking the uprising in the first place.

Just reading the story of a 6 year old boy Myka Tuala, who died in a car accident in Northland and it raised a few questions. He is described as happy kind and gentle, why would any news item need to say this of a 6 year old?
Also it says “Myka’s personality was a true reflection of the loving family environment he has grown up in”. In other words unlike alot of children in NZ. What’s the real story behind this accident?

    Very unusual for a properly restrained child in the backseat of a car to come off worst in a head on crash. I suspect the real story here is one of poor decisions and breaking the law leading directly to this child’s death. The driver should be made an example of.   For the past while , and before the new year the ODT has been running road toll stories .
  
  Obviously part of an editorial decision about what to fill their pulp fiction pages with during what is for the media “silly season” when all are on holiday and there’s nothing substantive to report ……..
  
  Which at the moment is far from the truth , there’s plenty to lead the pulp pages with .
  
  The prison riot’s a big one , but that would cast a bad light on their favoured govt and the other story could easily be the rain that has closed so many beaches because so much human shit is being washed out of our cities’ appallingly inferior and neglected infrastructure .
  But that story would divert attention away from the Media Pardy’s fav hate figures , the farmers ( you know the owners of private property , hard working , mainly white males , who actually keep this place solvent) and away from the real environmental culprit , human beings living in mass concentrations ( but you can’t criticise that ) in cities.

      At least cows don’t excrete cocaine ,meth and synthetic estrogens and about a cocktail of one hundred or more other man made drugs.
      These drugs are having an effect on all life.( male bass fish are producing eggs in certain badly affected rivers.) Other effects include sperm production in modern youth.
      They are not measured or removed from water supplies by present treatment stations.

  They always say that in a news story whenever anyone dies. I’ve noticed it over the last few years. It’s always so-and-so was a great person, loved by all, had a great nature, etc. I’ve never once seen a story reporting that a person died and he was pretty much a scumbag or disliked in any way.

    My question. Every time I see that magnificent cricket setting is how come the house is ‘full’ but never more than 20% of the members seats are occupied? Is that because the ‘members’ are the “We’re members at the cricket don’t you know” sorts who don’t actually know possibly the best NZ test cricket team of my lifetime is playing at their venue for the one time this summer? Or perhaps showing direct lineage to one of the first ships, (excluding those in steerage of course) is required to qualify to perch ones buttocks on a level surface?       Same for me hmmo; the knee stuff was a minor irritation, but I’ve been following New Zealand cricket since the early 1960’s, and I’m not about to give up now.
      
      The current side (with Wagner playing) is the best test side New Zealand has had in my lifetime, and I think we can now say that Williamson is our best batsman ever. 24 centuries and an additional 31 times past 50, he’s going to set records that will take some beating. The way he just flicked a switch today and started playing shots all around the wicket was something to behold. His captaincy is getting better with every series too. He truly is the complete batsman.

The fact of various politicians being publicly and theatrically injected with something (purported to be a vaccine), with the obvious PR aim of placating the herd, indicates that we should all be highly concerned.     Yes. But, so far so good – more anaphylaxis than normal, but mostly in people with pre-existing severe allergy. Only good data for Pfizer and Moderna, we will have to wait and see about Astra (and the others that are coming through). At present only a few million have had first dose world-wide, I will be happier when there’s about 100M [worldwide] and we know more about the side effect profiles.
    
    BTW mix-and-match vaccine (as proposed by UK) is beyond moronic – the vaccines all designed to the spike protein but all DIFFERENT epitopes (immune drivers). Also, going beyond the 21/28 day second dose period – Pfizer says that first dose immunity is n=onoy 50-60% and without 2nd dose, between 42-60 days immunity is lost for most so booster no good. It will be a disaster and the Trump base will be landslided back in to power, probably for a long time, maybe even with Trump at its head.

2020 is not accepted by America as a legitimate election. The polls are confounded; anomalies are unexplained. Voters are now credibly disillusioned by their system. WATCH FOR BG CHANGE.

Concerning reports are coming out of the UK that they are now seeing many more young people developing serious illness and requiring admission to intensive care than was seen in the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak back in March/April. The more infectious mutated variant of the virus that is now prevalent in the UK seems to be the culprit.

As a person that has had extensive interactions with reporters of all types, I’m not quite willing to throw that nurse under the bus… what she said is likely something in-between what was reported and what everybody *thinks* she said… reporters are nobody’s friend (something I tell our junior staff/faculty [lecturers/Assistant Professors] repeatedly).

    To me it is fairly obvious that those prone to violence, are now less afraid to use it, the consequences seem less, the “authorities” more afraid to go hard. The very recent Waikeria incident is testament to this weakness and will not go unread by the gangs. The Firearms have always been in the bad guys hands, it is now a weak government and the police are seen also as having been de-powered and the weapons will be used.
    Of course the turf war for control of the highly lucrative drug trade, amongst the growing and seemingly empowered and imported gangs does not help at all. They are unafraid of authority.

We cannot accept any more One Billion Trees applications. The number of applications in progress will exceed the limit of the fund if approved.

Our aim is to plant one billion trees by 2028.
At current rates, we estimate commercial foresters will plant 500 million trees over the period.
We’re offering incentives for you to get involved in planting the other 500 million trees – the right trees in the right places for the right purposes. [1]

35. The rate of commercial replanting over the next decade will have a significant impact on the one billion trees total. For example, if the recent 95% replanting rate was maintained over the next decade this would equate to 770 million trees. [2]

From reference [1] you can see Government now proposes funding half a billion trees, leaving commercial Forestry to fund the other half billion. However, from the Cabinet paper [2] you can see Forestry plantings are “95% re-plantings”, meaning for every 95 seedlings planted, they chop down 100 mature trees elsewhere in their forests.
So over the period concerned, if they plant 500 million seedlings, they will presumably fell 526,315,789 trees. So, in fact, those 26 million trees subtracted form the Government funded total of half a billion, will leave 475 million net total for the project.

But apparently any new funding is halted at present.

So will 475 million trees still sequester sufficient carbon to be worth continuing with at all, or should they just chuck it all in and forget it like that Capital Gains Tax thing, and those Kiwibuild houses?

  The original pulpit proclamation over 1 Billion trees, was portrayed that an additional net 1 Billion trees were to be planted. This is how it was conveyed and how the international press saw it.
  
  It was only later that it was expanded to include trees already being planted, and of course they are ones being replanted, so no net change.
  
  If she had said gross 500 million trees, she could have stepped down from the pulpit, and 30 seconds later patted her self on the back, and said “all done”.
  
  When someone states they are going to produce something, you accept that as being what they are producing, not what everyone else is producing.
  
  So in actual fact she will need to have planted 1,000,026,000 trees top have a net 1 Billion tress planted.
  
  So, do nothing, achieve nothing, claim other people’s existing work as your own new work and your crowning achievement, and take glory for what did not happen. Shameless!

      The average life expectancy in the US was about 48.3 years in 1900.
      In 2019 it was 78.9.
      The main cause of people getting Alzheimers is getting older.
      Does that fact, and the numbers for life expectancy, give you a clue?
      
      In medieval times the average life expectancy, at least in Europe was between 30 and 40 years.
      If we go back to those days I would have to revive the old Tom Lehrer joke about Mozart
      “It is a sobering thought that when Mozart was my age, he had been dead for two years”.
      It would be even more sobering for me. I would have been dead for about 40 years if we went back to medieval life expectancy.

  Just don’t rely on a test from Victoria, they have over a 400% higher rate of positives than the rest of Australia.
  Will the tests be cycled and done exactly the same procedure at every test point.. Like all testing, it is a total waste of time if it manipulated to show what is wanted to be shown.
  Testing can be manipulated, can someone tell what the cycle rate/minute is used in New Zealand and has been uniform in all testing throughout.

    Just so the downtickers may have some understanding of how these tests work or more importantly don’t work.
    When you go below 1 person in 100 positive testing, for every 12 positives, 11 will be false positives.
    In low numbers these tests are utterly useless.
    The only true way to discuss this matter in low numbers is to follow the numbers of hospitalization, ICU admission, and death.
    The last recorded death was September 15, about 16 weeks ago. Just 5 people have been recorded deaths since the end of April.
    What percentage of total deaths is this?
    Not a single person is in hospital, that alone ICU.
    The economy is being trashed on a complete lie.
    Of the 19 reported a few days back, 2 will be positives, the rest locked away on poor testing.
    How many people die of the flu in a normal year, about 500.
    Lock up those that are vulnerable and want to be locked up, let the rest get on with their lives.

      On point 3, he’s been up in front of judges more than 30 times and on bail for theft when he shot at his brother with a sawn off shot gun for sealing his jacket, so yip, welcome to morons and limp wrist justice in NZ.
      
      Again, if he was serving his full sentences, he wouldn’t of been shot or robbing houses and making more victims, as he’d still be in jail.

    Then that 1/3 of sentence nonsense for ‘behaving yourself.
    
    It should be 15 months minimum if you behave yourself, if not you stay there until you behave, like you should do as a positive contributor to society. All these discounts make a mockery of the justice system.
    
    Same with 10 years meaning life. A sick joke for victims. Crime pays in NZ.
    
    Good example though, if you keep criminals in jail, they can’t be shot by other criminals, therefore reducing crime. Fancy that.

Some recent research suggests that most masks could be bad for your health.

Apparently most masks (other than those fancy N95 masks) are really good at generating micro plastic fibres which get into your lungs and have been linked to causing lung cancers (like asbestos).

Nothing too conclusive yet, but it takes away the argument that mask wearing must be better than nothing.

Mask wearing is useless for healthy people anyway, only for sick people. They work on the way out, not so much on the way in (except for specialised masks of course).

For the most part they are just props for muggles theatre.

Let me say, anyone’s death is sad, and the unnecessary and premature death of a person is a disaster.
But it has to be asked: why was this young father and stepfather out late at night with others ?
Why was he not at home with his partner and 3 kids ?

“It is so sad he didn’t deserve to go like this … he only just got released from prison and was changing his life around for the better for his kids.
“He was a hard-working, kind, caring man that we made many memories with,” she said.

So much for changing his life and consideration for his kids.
Another more realistic opinion might be that once out of prison he couldn’t wait to associate with his old mates, tell the old woman to get stuffed, ignore the kids and go and do what he wanted.

No Extradition for Assange.

A British judge ruled on Monday that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange cannot be extradited to the United States to face charges of espionage, as it would increase the risk of Assange committing suicide in prison. It’d be nice if he walks free soon.

Phillip alps got sentenced to 18 months in prison because they didn’t like the way he thinks. A violent armed robber with long criminal history gets 4 months home detention, Guess what race he is.
