New information for Pike River Families prompts calls for re-entry team to go further.
Is this a call for the Government to pour millions of more dollars into virtually a lost cause when that money could used to help others or is this because Labour and Jacinda Ardern are losing the popularity contest and have started to drop support in the latest poll and realized that Pike River has worked before in their quest to become the Government in 2017 so why not again.
So will Jacinda Ardern and Andew Little give into the Families and spend the 60 – 100 million dollars needed for the re-entry to go further when issues like health and education need fixing in this Country.

  After reaching the roof-fall, the Agency still had 600 metres of side passages to investigate and electric equipment to examine. Has that now been done – and nothing found – that arguments are back to going beyond the roof-fall to the mine itself?

    Time to cut the smoke screen. The blame goes to the people who forced a closed mine over a known gas producing coal seam. That is contrary to global safe practice.

      Didn’t they want it to be an open cast because of the gas problem – the very problem that caused the disaster?
      Instead of spending a few more millions going further into the mine, open the bloody thing up into an open cast mine as originally intended – 2 for the price of one – an operating mine and a discovery of the issues.

Where is Ardern? Other than an article about a letter to a child in the UK there is no news of her, plenty of Nash, Robertson, Little and Hipkins. She may be with Housing Minister Woods as she also seems to have disappeared from the headlines.

      I think she is running scared and out of steam.
      All the Labour sycophants told her she was doing so well, and now they are putting the pressure on her to maintain the image, but she is finally realising which way the wind is blowing –
      Reality is surely setting in, and all that loving kindness must seem wasted if she looks with a clear eye at what it has achieved – a majority government with absolutely no benefit to anyone in the foreseeable future.
      Poor woman.

  There were a lot of Ministers absent from Parliament last week including Ardern who went AWOL for the entire week.
  
  Why wasn’t Ardern to be seen at the Americas Cup celebrations? Most unlike her not to be there unless her PR minders thought that there was a risk of an adverse reaction from an Auckland crowd who were more than a tad annoyed about an extended lockdown.

    It was decided not a good look given the level of criticism around granting of $M’s to ‘rich men’s sport’ etc etc, to have the KIND PM showing her face.

  I still can’t get over her not being there when we won the America’s Cup. Something is going on. Let’s hope she is considering stepping down. That would then show what the people thought of the rest of that rabble who are supposed to be running our country – not down but up!!
  
  On second thoughts, perhaps she’s arranging the wedding although I would think that would happen closer to the next election so she can get some touchy feely points.

      I thought Ms Ardern and her fiancé were there at the end of the cup racing – but out of general sight. And there was talk of them both presenting the cup.
      Also, several of the hyped-up sailors mentioned they had received messages and congratulations from the Prime Minister and seemed very excited about it.
      Don’t know why.

  She visited a school on Thursday. I saw something about it on the taxpayer-funded Stuff website or perhaps Facebook. I didn’t take much notice but the school was in the North Island. There were gushing comments from parents… “My daughter was so excited…” etc.

    I remember back in the early ’70’s being all excited about getting to wave at the Queen as she went by, and parents being more protective and circumspect, ‘gushing’ was frowned upon as a sign of immaturity amongst young females, and in their time ‘the poofters’.
    
    Comments to the editors, even the ‘weekly’ ones were largely the affairs surrounding full employment, and domesticity. Matters that mattered. Clean council houses mattered.
    
    Mums were mums and dads were dads. And life was so simple and straight forward – that Bob remained your uncle. 😎

I spent one hour in the company of Chris Penk, the MP for the new seat of Kaipara ki Mahurangi yesterday. The purpose of which was to acquaint him with some of the issues of the rural part of his seat. Let us say it was an education for him, and I never knew MPs could use such “blue” language.

I sought to confront him with the reality that National have had a mortgage over rural Northland, but neglected the issues of the constituents.
Issues covered included:
Vector/power lines in rural areas;
Auckland Council and poor services;
Auckland Transport roads; and
A time bomb of complacency, incompetence and neglect by successive governments and KiwiRail, made worse by the arrogance of Peters, Shane Jones, Phil Twyford, Julie-Ann Genter, and Grant Robertson with the $100m plus commitment in the 2019 budget to fix/upgrade the rail line from Auckland to Whangarei. Let us say, I showed him enough to say there is either a high level of ignorance, complacency, negligence or stupidity between the government or KiwiRail with regards to the continued use of the rail line for any level of service.

You can check Chris’ Facebook page for photos. Let us say in the current state of the line, it is negligent to use the line, and lives of train drivers are being put needlessly at risk.

    They did.
    National didn’t and don’t give a toss about the rural vote – personal experience has shown us that.
    When we really needed some help, the two Nat MP’s around here just did not want to know. –
    “Too busy, not our problem, go somewhere else, too bad, see ya.”
    One of them was too important to even bother to respond at all and got an office worker to do it.
    Next time anyone from the National Party phones up here again asking us to join or donate money I am all ready to tell them exactly where to go……..

  The problem with the North Auckland Line is that it’s hard to justify the maintenance spend, let alone improvements, for just one short train each day.
  
  Jones and Peters were strong supporters of the (odd) plan to move much of Auckland’s port traffic to Marsden, and then train much of it back to Auckland. But the West Auckland line runs at capacity with commuter trains so you couldn’t feed that freight traffic down to South Auckland during the day. The pragmatic logistics and scheduling never made sense.

    VM, it is two short and pretty much empty trains a day. Each with 2 DMUs, and a string of wagons (some with freight, some not. Past our place, there one northbound between 8.00am and 8.30am and in the evening about 7.30pm there is a southbound train.

    Wayne, I have no problem with line being upgraded. The issue is, in 2019, Robertson earmarked $100m for upgrading the line. The line was closed, work done, but the issue is work that should have been done was either:
    1. Not identified; or
    2. Worse, identified and ignored.
    
    The track where I took Chris yesterday is in such poor state that the NZTA’s Rail Safety inspectors need to close the line until it is fit for purpose. I’ve already spoken to someone in KiwiRail about these matters, and he was not surprised about the condition of the track. The cause is the sleepers have rotted and need replacing. The area I showed Chis Penk covers circa 4km between 2 tunnels. The tunnels have been enlarged in the past 18 months, but the track between was left untouched, but it needs replacing. The sleepers are rotting, and with the naked eye you can see the track is buckling.
    
    It is clear from even a cursory inspection of the track condition that services should not have recommenced in January.
    
    Would you say that there might be an issue when you can find bent bolts, sheared/broken bolts, pull bolts out with your fingers – all of these bolts are meant to be holding the track to the sleepers? Or alternatively find whole pieces of sleepers rotted away?
    
    What is an acceptable level of risk to you? The loss of a train driver’s life because of a derailment?

      I think you’ll find Robertson earmarked $100m to upgrade the line (a) as a political deal with Jones/Peters, (b) knowing that the money would not be spent/committed before the 2020 general election and (c) expecting then that the money would never be spent.

      Thanks for that. It wasn’t apparent from your original post that you and Chris had spent the time actually seeing the line.
      I agree, if it is being upgraded (which I support) then do it properly. I am reasonably familiar with the line, and agree the total line needs upgrading.
      Is the extension to Marsden Point still going ahead?

        Wayne, im very familiar with the line, it is no more than 20m across the road from our gate. According to the KiwiRail website, they say they are committed, but reality is another matter.
        
        Yesterday, Chris took lots of photos of yhe issues I brought to his attention. It was not only the issue of the track, but also a rail crossing. It is such that you do not have visibility of an on coming north or southbound train until your vehicle is in a dangerous position. Chris took video and photos and said he will pursue matters.
        
        Last night he had posted a photo on Facebook from our look at the track.

    I would think the vast majority of Americans would agree with you, they have turned off comments on the Whitehouse utube site, this is going to come to a head or should I say to a Harris very quickly.
    You would need to seek out a seeing eye dog if you thought this poor guy is not constantly losing few sheep short in the top paddock.

      Greg, Biden has referred to Harris twice now as ‘President Harris’ but I wouldn’t be too hasty in naming her as a replacement as she is not that popular among Dems. Watch for another name to be announced soon after Joe steps down. Look, we are not all stupid, we have suspected for months that choosing an ageing Joe as the Dem leader was likely a ploy to get the ‘business as usual’ lot back behind the wheel. The upcoming press conference will be a doozy for sure, but only if it happens. Remember Joe has called Putin a ‘killer’ so this may mean an ostensible reason Biden is locked in the WH war room next Thursday.

He fools nobody but himself that it makes him look younger.     I have always believed that the one thing that would genuinely stop a move against ‘speculators’, ie investors, in the housing market is the fact that so many MP’s are investors – never really going to do a turkeys voting for christmas were they?
    
    I therefore found it interesting this week that one of the news reports (can’t remember if it was TVNZ or 3) had a section when they were pressuring mp’s on how many rentals they owned. From the bit that I saw, the media were focussing on Brownlee a bit.
    
    Be interesting to see if the latest coordinated hit on the speculators is reflected in any quick sales of properties by Labour MP’s to avoid being caught up in the crossfire?

        If Biden is mentally adept, why, since the start of his run for POTUS, has he not had a press conference where spontaneous questions were asked. Every single one, and all his “meetings” with voters and supported were scripted from start to finish. Questions pre-selected, and answers pre-prepared and given to Joe, in order.
        
        In that same time period Trump gave any number of spontaneous answers to questions as they occurred.
        
        You need to watch just a few of the videos available (no, not the ones where he fondles little girls), the ones where he admits that he is confused and doesn’t know where he is or what he is supposed to do next. Where he forgets not just his Sec Def’s name, but where that person works (ps, it’s the obscure place called “The Pentagon”). Or where he produces word salad and can’t say words – and no it ain’t a stutter, he’s trying to read words but they don’t make sense to him so cannot say them properly.
        
        He may not have lost all his marbles, but there sure is a big hole in the bag. And you know, you are going to have to admit this fact pretty soon, and we’ll be sure to remind you of your determination not to see what is right before your eyes.

  I heard on the radio this morning some lobbyist demanding that the Government launch an education program to convince pacific communities that the vaccines are OK. Because “his people feel unsafe”.
  
  This stuff makes me sick. This attitude is simply absent in Chinese communities in New Zealand. All of my friends want as little to do with government as possible.
  
  If they don’t want to get the vaccine leave them to it. Anybody with common sense can use Google to get good information about the vaccines and make their own judgements. And the New Zealand government would be my last choice for getting any reliable information on covid or the vaccines.

One motel made $6 million off the Government last year, charging much more for rooms than it normally would.

In the three months to December 2017, the Government spent $6.6 million on motels. By the following year it more than tripled and just keeps growing.

In the same period last year, the Government spend skyrocketed to $82.5 million on motels.

Rental prices are out of control in New Zealand, leaving many to seek emergency accommodation.

Salamasina has just moved into Oakwood Manor with her one-year-old. Emergency housing accommodation is a last resort.

“Before moving here we were trying to find a rental and a friend to stay with so they could help pay,” she told Newshub.

Newshub can reveal the top 10 earning motels collectively raked in $40 million of Government cash in just the last year – the top three charging more than $5 million each.

“I don’t blame the motels,” says National’s housing spokesperson Nicola Willis. “If I was a motel owner and I saw this Government coming, I might try it on too.”

The number one earner, MCentral Apartments in Manukau, was paid $6 million – an average of $444 a night. It’s advertising rooms to the public starting at $170.

“We have to charge more than we charge corporates because there’s more damage to deal with, there’s more hassle to deal with, it’s just more difficult,” said a director who spoke on the condition he wasn’t named.

“It’s part of the sort of ‘danger money’ that we factor into it.”

It’s news to Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni.

“If there are issues with regards to whether or not they are charging more to [Ministry of Social Development] clients than they would to be to others, then yes it should be looked into,” she told Newshub.

“I’m going to explore this.”

Sepuloni could ask the Associate Minister of Housing with responsibility for homelessness, Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson, to shoulder the load.

But in the five months that she’s been a minister, Davidson hasn’t taken a paper to the Cabinet committee or issued a press release.

“Not yet,” she said, adding that she’s been engaging with the community.

Newshub checked Davidson’s latest ministerial diary. In January there were just two housing entries – a couple of interviews.

She walked away when pressed on what work she’s been doing in housing.

The government is paying 350 000 dollars to provide counselling for orchard owners whose fruit is rotting because there are not enough fruit pickers.

While not allowing any fruit pickers from covid free countries to enter New Zealand without spending 14 days in a covid hotel with people from high risk countries.

And while paying hundreds of millions to able bodied young people to sit on the couch. There should be NO benefits for able bodied people under 50. It should be “here is bus ticket. The orchard owner will meet you at the other end. Here is 500 dollars to get you through to your first pay.”

  I agree to a certain extent but the lazy bums sitting on a couch all day are probably more trouble than they are worth to the orchardists. I had an orchardist friend who employed beneficiaries on a part time basis. They were worse than useless, either turned up for work drugged up or didn’t turn up at all, also stole a lot of stuff. I don’t know what the answer is but welfare is just too darn easy to get.

I remember when

HB Today: 18 March:
‘Six vehicle HB Expressway pileup prompts petition to remove side barriers.’
Emergency services struggled to reach six injured when a cement truck hit the car in front of it, shunting it into a ute and starting a ‘concertina’ of damage on SH2.
The accident occurred at 8.17am but the first ambulance, with 3 patients, arrived at HB Hospital at about 9.30am and a second, with 3 more, at 9.58am.
A friend of one of the victims started an online petition which had already attracted over 1000 signatories.
Waka Kotahi said the medium barriers have saved many lives and prevented serious injuries.
They will be debriefing with emergency services to understand what the issues were,

    That crash was in fog, cars in front had slowed for something and a stupid concrete truck driver came piling through the fog at around 90 kph and had no way to slow down in time.
    
    No doubt he will be prosecuted for dangerous driving as indeed he should. Should have been driving as the road code states, at such a speed so he could stop inside the distance he could see.

Gregory Fortuin rewrites history and tells porkie-pies to advance a white supremacy narrative!

I refer you to Mr Fortuin’s latest piece in today’s Stuff:

In the piece Mr Fortuin states: “In 2001 I was denied access to an exclusive club in Wellington for wearing a zebra shirt and an African jacket. This year, Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi was kicked out of Parliament for wearing his hei tiki. Black students here are still having to fight for the right to braid their hair. In 2021, white supremacy is still the standard.”

Mr Fortuin refers to the 2001 incident at the Wellington Club on The Terrace where he was invited to lunch by a club member. The club member let the show down a little bit by not informing him beforehand that the rules members had voted for themselves and guests was that a jacket and tie were required when attending the club.

Mr Fortuin duly rocked up without a tie and was welcomed, informed (and the member reminded) of the rules and offered a tie (and jacket if he wished) to wear over lunch. Mr Fortuin declined the offer of a tie and he and the member went for lunch elsewhere. He then went and made a deal of it at a Parliamentary Committee to discuss Race Relations Office funding.

It is quite disgraceful for Mr Fortuin to now label this event as an example of ‘white supremacy’. It was then and remains one simply of a group of private individuals coming together in the form of a club, setting membership rules of conduct and insisting on them being upheld by members and guests of members. Exactly the same as the local bowls club, the local Shinto Shrine, the local Marae, the uniform requirements of the local cricket club etc etc etc.

Mtr Fortuin was not ‘denied access’ for wearing a “zebra shirt and an African jacket”, rather he was asked to attire himself according to club rules just as he would have been if he turned up in scuba gear, a loincloth, a pink tutu or tramping gear – and nothing whatsoever to do with race.

He declined to do so and chose to meet and eat with his friend elsewhere.

After this became news the members committee dispatched Wyn Beasley, a committee member, to discuss the matter with Mr Fortuin and help him to better understand the club, the club traditions and the rules the members have set for themselves in the context of a private club. Subsequent to this discussion Mr Fortuin issued an apology:

It is now quite disgraceful for Mr Fortuin to rewrite history and characterise this incident as one of ‘white supremacy’. By doing so he injects race into a situation which has nothing to do whatsoever with race and everything to do with a private club setting and insisting on codes of attire and conduct of members and guests.

I’m just off the phone with a club member who was on the Club Member’s Committee at the time and he confirms my recollection of events.

Mr Fortuin should apologise to the Club and Club members. Again.

Failing that let’s see Mr Fortuin rock up to the local masjid at 1pm for Friday prayers wearing a nice evening gown and heels or budgie smugglers, gumboots and a singlet and when asked to change into something more appropriate racing to the media railing about ‘Islamic Supremacy.’

At least then he’d be consistent.

Stuff hammers remaining White newspaper subscribers today with an article by former Race Relations Commissioner Gregory Fortuin.

Fortuin writes:

“This year, Maori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi was kicked out of Parliament for wearing his hei tiki. Black students are still having to fight for the right to braid their hair. In 2021 white supremacy is still the standard.”

Waititi was asked to step out of the House of Representatives because he wasn’t wearing a tie, which at that time was the dress code for males in the House.

If he’d draped his tiki loosely over the top the Speaker would likely have allowed it, just as he would have not been bothered by a tie pin. In fact the Speaker probably wouldn’t have noticed the tiki in that case, given the distraction of Waititi’s black cowboy hat, symbol of the frontiersmen who subdued North America’s indigenous people.

The comment today echoes Fortuin’s own run in at the Wellington Club. He tried to enter without a tie, breaching the club’s dress code.

In today’s Stuff article Fortuin links this to Waititi’s dress confrontation with the Parliamentary Speaker. Fortuin writes:

“In 2001 I was denied access to an exclusive club in Wellington for wearing a zebra shirt and an African jacket.”

A brief link on Wikipedia, says of Fortuin and the Wellington Club: “Eventually, he conceded that his behaviour during the incident was inappropriate.”

The rules on school haircuts apply to non-Black pupils,too. Perhaps Fortuin would like braided hair exemptions for any Black soldiers in the NZ Army, as well.

It’s now a tradition to have a loose cannon as race relations commissioner. More recent is the State media bloc – State Radio, State TV, and the subsidised newspapers – cheering the commisioners on.

  What have we come to when a former Race Relations Commissioner, no less, is prepared to label people as racists so wrongfully, blatantly and in such a reckless and carefree manner.
  
  I know for a fact that a serving Race Relations Commissioner would have been welcomed to the Club with open arms, as he in fact was, as is anyone – as long as they adhere to the rules that apply to anyone; to come correctly attired.

  ‘CNN is losing around a million viewers on average each night since President Donald Trump left office – and is down nearly 50% in the key 24-54 age group, a report said on Thursday.
  
  The cable news channel had averaged 2.5 million prime-time viewers each night from November 4 through Inauguration Day on January 20, according to a Fox News analysis of Nielsen data.
  
  But data shows the network averaged only 1.6 million total prime-time viewers from January 21, the day after the inauguration of President Joe Biden, through March 15, according to the report’.

Heard the covid19 vaccine add on the radio today
“We have secured enough vaccines for the whole population.”
They are in the country?……..NO
So you’ve ordered them, have you paid? Do you have a delivery date?…..Didn’t think so. Ask Australia what “securing the vaccine” means.
I import too, these are all questions you MUST ask.
But the most interesting part of the broadcast.
“We will tell you when it your turn to get the vaccine continue to use the tracing app…..until….then”
So ….after you are vaccinated, you no longer have to use the tracing app?…or is English a second language to the person who wrote this?
