The Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Act 2019 requires a climate change risk assessment to be undertaken at least every six years. The first one was carried out in 2019. It is critically important because it impacts on decisions made by Government and Local Government to counter issues like rising sea levels, higher temperatures, etc. It influences budgets of many billions of taxpayer and ratepayer funding.

For the first time the initial assessment has been professionally analysed and critiqued. It has been unpicked by a group – Tailrisk. They have the credentials to do so with credibility.

What they found is deeply disturbing. The assessment is not just flawed, it is deceptive, exaggerated and ignores, facts. It is reprehensible and contemptuous.

Tailrisk point out the errors and exaggerated tripe. For instance, among many nonsenses, the assessment says by 2050……

“Health, safety and wellbeing significantly compromised across whole of society. The happiness and satisfaction of hapū and iwi are severely affected. Permanent disruption to education, employment and community services. Patterns of daily activity and behaviour unable to continue. Coping range of all communities exceeded”.

All of this is expected to occur in thirty years when temperatures are expected to have increased by less than one degree; when the sea level has risen by perhaps 15 centimetres; and there has been a very limited increase, if any, in ‘extreme’ climate events.

Among the “scientific” papers supporting this absurd finding was one that discussed a large Canterbury wildfire. It found that the wildfire was discussed by people in the local pub during a barbeque for the fire-fighters. It cited another paper – on building ‘community resilience’ in Trinidad Tobago.

The same people who made these ridiculous assessments are now the Climate Change Commissioners. They will do future assessments. This elitist driven insanity has to stop. New Zealanders – us ordinary, feet on the ground Kiwis need to take our country back.

        The Hughes fact check site is a crock of shyte. Anyone who holds themselves up as a fact checker, are claiming the moral high ground, and that you are superior to all others in that field, and the only authority to believe. Using the title “fact checker” implies superior intellect.
        
        Putting “fact checker” on a political or climate change website is in itself arrogant. Because instead of taking a position on specific political or climate change issues, the website impetus is about discrediting others.
        
        It would be similar to a solicitors website claiming competitor solicitors are dishonest, and “we” are the only honest solicitors.
        
        It is identical to religious bible bashing zealots e.g. JWs, claiming “our religion” is the only true religion and other religions are false. What arrogance.
        
        Fact checking “fact checking sites”, and most are simply arrogant people who want to discredit other’s beliefs or information.
        
        Electrical Engineers don’t fix plugs. If that is your level of understanding of what engineers do, it explains why you don’t understand Tony Heller, and are misguided over climate change.

    Many Chicken Little climate alarmists parrot that 97% of scientists have said that man-made global warming is a fact. The science is done. Move on. Go Green and Vegan.
    
    Where did that come from?
    
    Back in May 16 2013 President Obama tweeted “Ninety-seven percent of scientists agree: #climate change is real, man-made, and dangerous.”
    
    Obama was referring to a 2013 paper by the University of Queensland’s John Cook, who in his research noted that 11,994 papers published between 1991 and 2011 mentioned the search words ‘global warming’ and ‘global climate change’.
    
    Guess what Cook actually found? Only 32.6% of those papers endorsed the view of anthropogenic global warming. But of that group, 97% said that global warming is mostly man-made.
    
    So, what is 97% of 32.6%?
    
    Also, I recall back in the ’70’s when, among others, Time Magazine had a cover and leading article on the coming Ice Age. Predicted by many leading scientists. We worried about New York City being flattened by glaciers [which would have been an excellent outcome – but I’m from the South].
    
    Difference back then was that science had not become politicized.

      The 97-percent myth was launched last year by Australian global-warming activist John Cook and the alarmist website, SkepticalScience.com. Responsible scientists and sensible laymen were properly skeptical of the SkepticalScience claims from the get-go, but it took the investigative digging of independent blogger Brandon Shollenberger to expose how Cook was cooking the data.
      
      Incredibly (but not so surprisingly, considering the fanaticism of some climate zealots), after deconstructing Cook’s data that was publicly available, Shollenberger found that only 65 (yes, 65) of the 12,000+ scientific abstracts Cook and his team of volunteers studied can be said to endorse the position that human activity is responsible for most of the experienced global warming. For a 97.1-percent “consensus” we would expect 11,640+ abstracts to endorse anthropogenic (human-caused) global warming, or AGW — not a mere 65!

  The whole climate change debate is littered with emotional bleating which is long on rhetoric and short on facts.
  
  Here’s a quick precis on NZ and it’s climate change contribution.
  
  NZ has 0.06% of the global population.
  
  NZ produces 0.1% of global emissions.
  
  At first glance, you might see that as a problem, however, when you look further, you see that NZ is responsible for 0.16% of global GDP.
  
  China has 18.3% of Global GDP, and produces 30% of carbon emissions. Why are we the problem again??

  It is often said, that if you lock two economists in a room, the only outcome will be an argument. You have chosen to accept as gospel the comments of one economist and one paper that is stridently anti climate change from its first page.
  Tailrisk seldom if ever, agree on what is the consensus of opinion in New Zealand. It seems to be their bent to be contrary.
  Regarding the BBQ that you mention, it should be pointed out that this is but one of the hundreds of references that Tailrisk themselves say they used to prepare their report. Trust them to highlight it. They do appear to be just another climate denier.

    It’s notable that people who use such a nonsensical label tend to be the science denying ignorant ones.
    According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association (NOAA), who collate Tidal Measurement Data from all over the world and who’s records go back to the mid 1850’s, Auckland Sea level rise is currently 1.2 mm per year.
    30 years is under 4cm. Hardly dangerous.

    You’re being a little bit harsh I reckon but Tailrisk does have some questions to answer. Like for example why if its systems of analysis are so robust, that he/it/they have the idea that “emission” has two ms in it. Tailrisk! It doesn’t! People who can’t spel gud are automatically suspect. The summary of this report which is all I read, is littered with mistakes.
    
    That said, being contrarian is not in itself an evil and labelling this lot “just another climate denier” is unfair. The summary report claims its detailed full report makes a case and the summary itself has a number of charges that should be answered. I’ve read quite a number of alarmist arguments that are not really all that clever, and the reverse is also true. It is easy to find cases of provider capture everywhere, and Kuhn’s *Structure of scientific revolution* now more than 60 years old is a valuable reminder that passionate intensity is not a substitute for reasoned argument and robust evidence.

As for the references to “indigenous”, it seems that while God “maketh his sun to rise on the just and the unjust , and sends rain on the just and the unjust alike”, that’s somehow not the case with Maori and non-Maori..
  
  The Commission is ready and likely willing to do great damage to what remains of the New Zealand economy and has an eager audience in the intellectually lazy/challenged Ardern and her coterie. If there is ever to be a change of government again, the Commission should be abolished on day one.

BBC produce an in-house, B-Grade black comedy. It stars their own staff who have been forced to wear custom-made proximity detectors that sound an alarm when staff get “too close” to each other. But now these devices have now started spontaneously combusting, adding to the frustration of them loudly blaring when people need to work within 2m of each other in a studio. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.

      They need to soberly analyse the whole situation and distinguish the virus itself from the measures being forced on us. These elements are highly incommensurate. And make no mistake, we are being forced, as no debate is tolerated, at a minimum it is not encouraged. Instead we debate MIQ failings and vaccine roll-outs. That is perfectly acceptable, because it implies that the fundamental propositions have been fully accepted, leaving just the minor details to be “debated.” The issue has been inculcated and managed if we are merely questioning only downstream irrelevancies.
      
      It’s insufficient to simply label someone an “anti-vaxxer” or a “conspiracy theorist” because those terms were formulated by the people who want us obediently under their thumbs, to depict intelligent dissenters are someone who should be dismissed and ignored, and not engaged with. We are 21st century heretics. They may as well just scream “witch!” because it’s exactly the same principle as was used in the 17th century.
      
      Do we really think that the citizens of North Korea (to use a common example) really understand that they are being propagandised day and night, with the goal of establishing in them a false perception of their political and social reality? They too freely denounce dissenters, only because the propagandists tell them they should do so.

  The inventors of these devices would be quintessential wack jobs. Covid-19 is not programmed to obey an exact 2000mm ±5mm boundary.
  
  In some cases 1m would be OK. In other cases 20m would still put you at risk. Being in the same building with shared air, as in the NZ Managed Incubation Quarters (MIQ) would be enough to catch it.
  
  If you can smell someones bad breath, or a good fart at 2m you are not safe.

  There’s a really really simple fix to this that would cost $500k tops to implement, and not block traffic.
  
  Take a bus, or two. Old ones or new, doesn’t matter. Take 50% seats out of it so the lower floor is just floor. Run it from Westhaven to Sulfur Point and back and use it to ferry cyclists and pedestrians backwards and forwards. Make it free if that makes you feel better.
  
  Waking/Cycling the harbour bridge will never catch on, it’s really long and quite steep, and often windy and cold. I understand it’s a hassle to get a bike over, but let’s be real – 1.5km of climbing in the wind and noise followed by another 1.5km of wind and noise vs 5 minute standing in a bus.
  
  Better yet it won’t hold traffic up.

I haven’t seen much about the new Hamilton to Papakura train since it started – would genuinely like to know what patronage is like, but I don’t seem able to find regular passenger numbers.

In ther meantime we’ll just have to rely on the occasional stories that come out, like this one from The Spinoff.. Written yesterday, so up to date.

The Spinoff forgot to get tickets for the inaugural service. So instead, we decided to wait a while, and then send someone out to review Te Huia on the typical service on a typical day. I wanted to go and visit my brother in Hamilton, and was heading down country anyway, so got the job. The trip was the second and final service on a Thursday night – Te Huia trains go north twice every weekday in the morning, and then south twice in the evening.

Perhaps everyone had just caught that first service, because the second one certainly didn’t have a lot of people on it. The first carriage I sat in was about a quarter full, with no competition whatsoever for a table. I’d half expected some casual chatting could be done across said table, but the only other person in that particular section was sitting across the aisle, and immediately opened his laptop to dive into a spreadsheet. Fair enough.

Later on I did a walkthrough to see if I had picked the only empty carriage. But it turned out the opposite was true – in the carriage right up the front of the train, there was a grand total of two people. They didn’t look all that interested in sharing in the magic of trains with me either.

So sounds like we probably won’t have to worry about putting on additional carriages any time soon …

The bloke that wrote this article describes himself as a train advocate – he’d love to see a fully functional intercity train network, and says it would “wonderful to think Te Huia is the first step on the journey towards a goal like mass public transit between the “Golden Triangle” cities of Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga.”

But at the end of the day, he writes:

… it was hard to avoid feeling like Te Huia is a missed opportunity to think bigger.

  I can’t imagine there’s anybody who is seriously surprised at the use (lack of use) of this service. As the writer from The Spinoff said, it took an hour to get to the train’s departure point and left him a half hour walk from Hamilton central city when he “arrived”. What kind of survey was done to determine how many actually commute from Hamilton to Auckland on any sort of regular basis? And of those who do, how many would be happy to spend up to four hours daily in a train? The fact that (so we’re told) the Saturdays when the train does run they are very popular suggest to me that a mid morning service could be tried.

I was at the airport this morning and noticed Russel Norman on that breakfast TV show trashing the dairy industry about methane from the cows and demanding that they “pay for their emissions”.

The stupid interviewer could have asked the obvious. New Zealand farmers are the most efficient in the world. So if we reduce dairy output, that gap will be immediately filled by other nations and emissions, at best, would remain unchanged.

        Most overload stress comes from underfunding: this means too few nurses and doctors, antiquated and too few buildings.
        
        A lesser cause has been direction of funding to “counsellors” rather than nurses and doctors. An earthquake and the call goes out for counsellors, and the call echoes on for years. Any day now luvvies will be pushing for counsellors for climate panic in schools.

I really do think there will be a democratic rebellion when the masses realize there is no real intention to remove restrictions even with the majority of populations vaccinated in most Western Jurisdictions.

WuFlu is now endemic in most of the world. The best we can do now is vaccinate those at risk and have a good supply of ICU beds and medicines for those that catch it without being vaccinated.

  This Osaka business is a double edged sword. Criticise her for being a prima donna and you get accused of kicking someone with anxiety problems while she’s down, don’t criticise her and you are permitting a spoilt princess to rule the roost. I may be wrong but my personal opinion is that she is a spoilt princess. There is no way she can play tennis at the highest level if she has anxiety problems. Talking to the press would be nothing in comparison. She obviously thinks she can make the rules and it is a good thing she is being taught a lesson. If she truly has anxiety problems it would be a good thing to give up tennis altogether.

    An ex coworker who is also a tennis coach told me once that at the top end of professional tennis, it’s all down to mental strength, the physical abilities of the top players are very similar. With that in mind, a top player like Osaka is mentally very strong and attending post match press conferences shouldn’t be that difficult for her.

  I prefer we keep out of the irritate China business. It’s plain that China has been the primary occupier of that region extended and has as a reasonable claim to rights.
  
  Australia must have greater concerns particularly now that China has control of the Port of Darwin and has sold much of it’s mineral wealth to China. That makes them very vulnerable. There’s no way we can do anything if China decides to increase the pressure on Australia. For our own long term welfare keeping well to the sides is best.

Penalty for doing so would be confiscation of their bikes and de-registration.

This is an interesting take.
Viva Frei is talking about a Quebec bill, 96, that is ostensibly trying to “protect” the French language. Including giving the OQLF powers to “ensure the respect of the Charter of the French Language, even in the Absence of a Complaint”.

Parts of the Bill would bar French speakers doing non-French courses. It would force companies of more than 25 staff to use French in the work place etc.

So Stuff won’t need any subsidy?

Sinead Boucher is interviewed today, to mark a year since she bought Stuff Ltd from its Australian owner for $1.

She tells Stuff reporter Tom Pullar-Strecker that Stuff will make a profit in the year ended 30 June, “at least before any abnormals.”

Pullar-Strecker says profitability means Boucher has been able to take her time on deciding whether to bring a new investor into the business.

She says listing Stuff on the Stock Exchange is a possibility, but isn’t on the immediate horizon.

The Aussies, as well as pricing the newspaper chain at $1, apparently kept financial responsibility for all contracts due at the time of the giveaway, such as on leases.

Boucher won’t be releasing financial details for the first year, but, if she lists Stuff on the Stock Exchange, publication will be mandatory.

  If there’s a lot of peacenik grumbling and Maori “gimme a say” in New Zealand about launches, the now-American company will surely be tempted to move its smaller-rocket launches to the United States as well.
  
  If it still wanted southern hemisphere launches for these, there’s heaps of space in Australia, which would welcome the company.

        The Point of Order blog reports that the Government is spending $16 million in a special partnership with the South Island tribe, Ngai Tahu, to buy a 1,000ha, 25km-long Kaitorete Spit comprising Birdlings Flat and bounding Lake Ellesmere.
        
        Megan Woods’ says of the project:
        
        ““Suitable sites for a space launch and aerospace testing facilities are scarce globally and this long finger of land along the coast of Canterbury is an ideal location.”
        
        A spokesman for the tribe’ Kaitorete Ltd,David Perenara-O’Connell said:
        
        ““This area is steeped in whakapapa and is hugely significant to the whanau of Te Taumutu and Wairewa. As mana whenua, it’s our role to make sure that we honour the past; those who have lived, travelled and fallen in this area by protecting and restoring its values and reaffirming our relationship to this whenua for our future generations.”
        
        This is a bullshit project as the Government continues to throw around taxpayer money as if it were lollies in a scramble at a kids’ party. The tribe levers yet another financial slab from taxpayers, but it has a snowball’s chance in hell of ever being a commercial space launching base.

      According to Stuff, in 1963 an imported rocket was launched from Birdlings Flat to a height of about 75km to conduct upper atmospheric research in a joint venture between Canterbury University’s physics department and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
      
      The rocket spent about 2min 30sec airborne and landed in the sea.
      
      Six years ago, Rocket Lab founder Peter Beck said the company’s primary launch pad would s be on Kaitorete Spit, which was described by the media as ideal for launching smaller satellites.
      
      Wikipedia lists about 45 rocket launch companies in the field in which Rocket Lab operates, including such big firms as Space X and Virgin.
      
      Aspects which would make it hard for a Ngai Tahu space base to compete include:
      
      – NZ’s remoteness. Space X, for example moved testing from Omelek in Micronesia to the United States mainland as the company developed. It is more convenient to be near suppliers.
      
      – New Zealand’s anti-military stance.The military, and security agencies generally, are the big spenders in this industry.
      
      – Maori desire to be part of over-all direction. Security and military customers aren’t likely to enthuiastically share information with indigenous owners of a remote launching pad.
      
      – Competition from countries with potential sites. Australia, a closer ally of America than New Zealand, comes to mind.
      
      If Mahia beat Birdlings Flat as an early site for Rocket Lab, which competitors would Ngai Tahu’s site have the edge over?
      
      It all sounds like a cover story for taxpayer funds being used to give Ngai Tahu control of the spit.

      Thousands of duck hunters have used the area for many many years.
      And it is an historic food basket for iwi!

There’s nothing to worry about.
Since the mid 1700s to 2019 the concentration of carbon dioxide has increased 47% (280ppm to 410ppm)
This has caused a temperature increase of about 1ºC.
The warming effect of carbon dioxide obeys the Beer-Lambert Law which shows that as you add more carbon dioxide it has a dramatically smaller effect. (Actually it is a logarithmic decrease.)

So when we have another 47% increase in carbon dioxide to 602ppm, we won’t even be able to notice the temperature increase.
Thus any further measurable temperature increase that happens from now on will certainly not be caused by carbon dioxide!

  Water evaporation, condensation and freezing driving huge convective and radiation blocking effects rules earth’s climate – but it is not possible to simulate given incredible complexity, and tiny length scales needed (would require computers trillions of times faster than available to even try). so Climate models use insane simplifications and fudges to try and make do, good enough for a day or two of forecasting but absolutely useless for long term predictions of changes ±0.2% that they are trying to pretend they can do. They are consistently shown to be bollocks by the actual climate that refuses to match their catastrophist narratives.
  
  Co2 warms the climate a little outside of the tropics (where sea temperature is clamped at 30°C maximum by evaporation and convection).   Jebus. It’s already cheaper to collect rain water and even recycle it using reverse osmosis. But they want to double it again from $4 to $8 per tonne to bring it up to ~$2-3k per year for most households? Delivering water by truck is only about $10/tonne. Even if you had to do that a few times a year it would be cheaper to install a big tank that will quickly pay for itself.

I had some insight yesterday as to why our young folk are doing so disastrously in basic maths.

I’ve noticed quite a few young teens (13-14/Year 9) can’t subtract accurately.

They seem to be using the partial differences method (so-named in this wikipedia entry).. and can sort of manage as long as they keep subtracting small digits from larger ones…eg 1462- 251… but a subtraction like 1230 – 786 flummoxes them.

They don’t seem to have been exposed to the old method I’ve always used of borrowing from the 10s/100s column and paying 1 back.

There clearly is more than one method to teach subtraction, but the method(s) I’ve seen young folk employing lately are slow, cumbersome and often inaccurate .

    We didn’t have TV or computers in my day so we had a dartboard in our Kitchen set out to the appropriate distance and played most nights and also went to the local dart club night. In my opinion it was the best way to count ,multiply and subtract and it served me very well in my job with stocktakes and percentages, and gave me the confidence to excel at maths.

  In the example on the wikipage you need to still subtract 40 from 300 to get 260. They gloss over how that is done, but it is borrowing.
  
  So basically you take a simple 1 step process : borrowing and add another two steps: partial differences then adding (and still borrowing if required).
  
  Are these people taking the piss? Are they actually trying to make life harder? Or is this just ultimate wokeness?

SAFE is having a wobbler about Waikato wanting to cull some geese.

SAFE thinks they should be re-homed.

I doubt anyone at SAFE has ever had a goose around the place. They eat about 1kg of grass a day each and convert it into shit. Unlike cow or sheep shit which helps things grow, goose shit kills grass almost as well as Round up. We had some geese crap out an area in a paddock that took over 6 months to grow back properly.

I can’t see many people wanting to give a home to geese. We were glad to get rid of ours (as was the person that gave them to us).

SAFE says: “Culling these birds will simply make space for more geese to take their place”.

Well duh. If you rehome them it will make a space for more geese to take their place too, so rehoming is no better.

But why poison them? Bump them on the head and make a hangi. Places like USA & Canada gather culled game (deer, moose, etc) and hand them out at foodbanks.

  I recall when we were studying Renaissance Art at boarding school, there was a wonderful old painting called ‘Leda and the Goose’.
