Of the nation’s need for 4650MW of power right now, coal is providing 610MW and wind 9MW (It was 6MW earlier so on the way up.). Gas is another 750MW Can’t see the massive expansion of wind and solar, at very high cost and environmental effects, the government wants doing much to replace fossil fuels, especially coal. But then, maybe we aren’t supposed to take it too seriously as it will only be an aspirational target like the 100k homes.

  I’m not an energy expert, besides understanding physics which I guess is better than most politicians.
  
  Assuming that EVs take off over the next 30 years the need for electricity will rise sharply. Would it not be prudent to build a couple of more large hydro dams with gas fired backup? I am not suggesting that politicians should make these decisions. But they should facilitate effective energy markets and operate light handed consenting processes to give permission for hydro dams, should they be viable.

    What you are missing is it is basically impossible to get a consent for hydro. All the people in cities an island away from the site write big objections that the commissioners listen to. And if it does pass, they drag it through the courts as lawfare. Look what happened to the proposed scheme on the West Coast. It got canned because one canoe party had travelled partway down the gorge.

    I think it is time for the South Island to claim independence and let the North Island (Auckland/Wgtn based Greenies) live in their idilic Nirvana they aspire to.
    
    The SI, devoid of the influence from Auckland/Wgtn, would happily build a dam or two and sell the energy to our brothers and sisters in the NI.
    
    Win/win. Clean energy for the Greenies, loss of control from Wgtn and influence from Auckland for SI..

      SO: Am with you on that but the setup costs are beyond the means of a country our size (although I guess we may be able to just print the money….), but beyond that, a single reasonably sized nuke plant would be enough to supply the country for the next 50 years.

        Expensive yes. But does not need a continuous supply of fuel. There are also individual ‘battery’ type reactors that are the size of a large fridge. Self contained, and when spent it is replaced with another unit. The rest of the turbine/generator stays in place. Auckland would need about 12 of them.

        Of the thirty or so being worked on the only two in operation are Russia’s RITM-200 (133 tonnes) and KLT-40 (78 tonnes). Hardly the size of a fridge.

        Someone (I think it was Michael Cullen) once pointed out that having just one nuke sort of wouldn’t work all that well. At the scales of the time it would have generated a significant chunk of the country’s power so if(when?) it went off-line for service or maintenance we would all freeze.
        
        Need two. I understand that it has become possible to build smaller nukes since then …

    As CJames said, getting consent for new hydro seems to be almost impossible these days. And there are only a finite number of suitable rivers anyway.
    
    Similar problems apply to pumped hydro storage, which is another trendy environmental fad. It’s a proven technology, and already in use. The two downsides are A) its purely a store of energy not generation and B) it relies on suitably shaped terrain, which is in limited supply.

        One way I could see this being sensible is if excess solar was used to do the pumping.
        
        Energy usage peaks early in the morning and late afternoon. Solar produces most mid-day when energy usage is not at its peak.
        
        If there was excess solar or wind energy available to pump water uphill to be later used by hydro generators then I could see this working.

  Aren’t we supposed to be 100% renewable energy by something like 2035? How is anyone going to do that without destroying the economy?
  
  The funny thing is that wind power is really expensive, you have to build huge massive wind turbines that quite frankly are an eyesore, they never make sense economically, they kill birds, they are very noisy to any residents that live nearby and when the wind isn’t blowing they don’t work!
  
  As Donald Trump once said in a speech, “we can’t watch TV tonight dear, the wind isn’t blowing and the sun hasn’t shone today”.
  We are going to be devolving into 1/3 world country at this rate. Power cuts every other day because the wind hasn’t blown and the sun isn’t shining. Sad!

    As far as wind, someone has done the math –
    
    Meanwhile, world energy demand has been growing at about 2 per cent a year for nearly 40 years. Between 2013 and 2014, again using International Energy Agency data, it grew by just under 2,000 terawatt-hours.
    
    If wind turbines were to supply all of that growth but no more, how many would need to be built each year? The answer is nearly 350,000, since a two-megawatt turbine can produce about 0.005 terawatt-hours per annum. That’s one-and-a-half times as many as have been built in the world since governments started pouring consumer funds into this so-called industry in the early 2000s.
    
    At a density of, very roughly, 50 acres per megawatt, typical for wind farms, that many turbines would require a land area greater than the British Isles, including Ireland. Every year. If we kept this up for 50 years, we would have covered every square mile of a land area the size of Russia with wind farms. Remember, this would be just to fulfil the new demand for energy, not to displace the vast existing supply of energy from fossil fuels, which currently supply 80 per cent of global energy needs.
    
    It gets worse. Wind turbines, apart from the fibreglass blades, are made mostly of steel, with concrete bases. They need about 200 times as much material per unit of capacity as a modern combined cycle gas turbine. Steel is made with coal, not just to provide the heat for smelting ore, but to supply the carbon in the alloy. Cement is also often made using coal. The machinery of ‘clean’ renewables is the output of the fossil fuel economy, and largely the coal economy.
    
    A two-megawatt wind turbine weighs about 250 tonnes, including the tower, nacelle, rotor and blades. Globally, it takes about half a tonne of coal to make a tonne of steel. Add another 25 tonnes of coal for making the cement and you’re talking 150 tonnes of coal per turbine. Now if we are to build 350,000 wind turbines a year (or a smaller number of bigger ones), just to keep up with increasing energy demand, that will require 50 million tonnes of coal a year. That’s about half the EU’s hard coal–mining output.

    We should ship all the decision makers off to Burma.
    There system is completely over run and it is a really great example of what happens when there is not enough power.
    All businesses and most houses have a diesel generator on the footpath.
    power goes off all day every day.
    You never get in a lift in a hotel unless you are prepared to spend time in there.
    The difference is the Burmese haven’t got the money to fix the system, New Zealand is going to tear down a great proven working system in the name of complete and utter stupidity.
    100% renewable, the impossible dream or should I say nightmare.

    Well it sure looks that way, As shipping shite to SE Asia for “recycling” will no longer be viable or cost effective.
    
    Recycling turbine blades ( 15yr life span) and Solar Panels ( 20-25 year lifespan) will I imagine require huge amounts of energy ( Heat) to recycle ?
    
    Not to mention EV components and batteries.
    Now I hope everyone can see why the energy sector ( Oil , Coal and Gas) is Loving this green wave of enviromentalism.
    
    Because sure as hell , This is the best ( unintended consequence) result from this “green” enviroterriorism.
    Look no further than our Governments results.

      They can’t recycle wind turbine blades. They bury them as landfill. They can’t recycle solar cells, especially the newer ones as it needs new technology that hasn’t yet been invented. It also consumes massive amounts of power. Same with electric car batteries.
      For a whole variety of reasons mainly related to weight, electric planes aren’t viable except as novelty items.

    According to the folks blowing up these wind turbines in New Mexico:
    
    having the 90 units felled permitted the wind farm owner to complete salvage of blades and drive-train elements from some of the wind turbines to provide replacement parts for similar units they operate at other wind farm locations.
    
    Although given the degree of destruction in that video I’m damned if I can see what might be recycled.
    
    Still, demolishing wind farms looks like it’s an industry with a future, as well as being a hell of a lot of fun.

  A contributing factor to the need to burn coal is lower than expected wind meaning wind turbines are idle for longer periods. So when Greenpeace yesterday claimed the power companies should have been building more wind turbines, it was to a large extent talking out of its backside. The proposed Lake Onslow project is supposed to address production shortfalls through natural causes (low rainfall and low wind), it is going to require an enormous amount of energy for its initial fill and this will effectively come from coal.
  Ironically if more gas was available, then gas fired generation plants would be run in preference to coal.
  Another politically complicating factor is the domestic (and small business) customer base. They expect electricity to always be available and at a stable price. The major gentailers recognise this political reality. The roll-out of smart meters with remote reading is as far as I know nearing completion and provides the ability to increase retail prices at the time of supply shortages. While some families would take up the challenge presented by variable pricing there would be a political backlash from many other customers.

      My grandfather converted his car to coal during WW2 in Wellington. He worked for an engineering business that produced equipment for the war effort. As a result he was classified ‘essential’ for the war effort in NZ was not sent over seas. Don’t ask me how he did it. He was a coach builder/mechanic/handyman that could build pretty much anything he wanted.

  Useful observation CJ. Under the present proposals for EV’s and electrification of boilers, former gas installations etc the demand for electricity is set to increase to 150% above current levels.
  
  With no hydro, no nuclear, no gas, a little geothermal we will be reliant on over half our generation coming from wind and solar.
  
  On those cold, calm, mornings and evenings the lights will go out. Welcome to blackouts even with Huntly at full tilt.

      The government switching to electric car fleet requires exactly no sacrifice (neither financial nor convenience) from them. In fact it’s an excuse for the taxpayer to buy them new cars! . While they put impediments to driving in all our cities for the peasants they still encourage driving by have council carparking perks for high earners. Why don’t they cut any government staff/management/ elected official carparks who can pay for parking and take public transport like the rest of the peasants. They think farmers should reduce cows by 15% but will they be reducing catering with meat and dairy by 15%, will they only reimburse vegan business expenses, get rid of first and business class travel, and ban flying to climate conferences which should all be held via zoom. In fact when it was proposed at council to get rid of first class travel they voted against it .

    It is not that uncommon in the last month to see more of NZ’s generation being done on diesel than on wind. Overseas experience is that wind is unreliable, expensive (especially if the cost of the necessary backup is included) and makes the grid a lot harder to manage. Blackouts become more common.
    The government knows this. It seems that they want electricity, like air travel, just to be the preserve of the elites like them, rather than the proles. Look at the air travel the Greens and Climate Commissioner rack up. Whatever happened to leading by example? Or is that only another one of those aspirational things.

      Diesel generators are generally open cycle gas turbines (OCGTs). Basically a jet engine spinning a generator instead of a fan.
      
      They suck fuel and are very expensive to maintain relative to other generation.
      
      What they are good at is spinning up quickly and being used as emergency generation or to pick up peak generation quickly then run for a bit until the thermals can pick up the load. They are not ideal for long term generation.
      
      We already have hydro which can spin up quickly, so using OCGTs would seem expensive.
      
      You can think of generation planning like a big game of Tetris (you know, that game where you need to fit blocks together) – fitting together different generator outputs to match the load.
      
      When I worked in gen planning we considered we’d lost the game when we had to fire up the OCGTs.

      Politically, electricity is a far more essential service than air travel, etc. It cannot be treated as a preserve of the elite (define it how you like). For example all the push towards ‘healthy homes’ rental properties mean nothing if tenants cannot operate heat pumps (as it is some tenants avoid using them already as their spending priorities lie elsewhere). If ordinary electricity customers are exposed to hot water restrictions and rolling blackouts (or the threat of them) they get upset pretty quickly. This has happened previously and was a big wake-up call for politicians. Arguably the Government and Green lobbyists has painted itself into a corner with self-imposed restrictions regarding electricity. For example Greenpeace split in its early days when realists within Greenpeace advocated nuclear power as an effective way of minimising environmental effects compared with other methods of generation. So Greenpeace ruled out a potentially pragmatic solution on dogmatic grounds (possibly the best endorsement of nuclear power is France who has a network of successfully operating and safe nuclear power stations and exports electricity to surrounding nations including UK).

  I’m sorry to rain in your parade, and I don’t disagree with your point, but your figures may be wrong.
  
  Currently the installed capacity of wind generation is about 690MW, about 7% of all generation is from wind, slightly more than coal pre gas ban. A further 2500MW or so is consented but will only ever be installed when or if it makes economic sense.

    When has any of this complete crap made economic sense. The best thing is do what the irrigators in Queensland are doing. When the price skyrockets they fire up the diesel generators and make big bucks pumping power into the grid.
    It makes perfect economic sense for wholesale power to go to $14,000 from the good old days of $40.

    Captain – installed capacity on the grid is 791MW according to Transpower’s live data. The 6MW was what was actually being generated. But wind is now to the rescue. Now up to 34MW, all in the South Island.
    People need to learn the difference between energy and power. You pay for energy but power is what you need here and now. The grid won’t work unless the generation and load are kept in balance (<15MW difference on a 5000MW grid) Wind is great at providing power when it isn't needed so the energy/ load factor figures look respectable.

  My 2 cents from working in generation planning for 2 years….
  
  The big issue with wind and solar is that they only have very limited generation availability. They do not perform on demand like thermal (coal/gas/nuke) and hydro stations do.
  
  To have a reliable power grid that provides power when you need it thus requires that any wind and solar generation has to be be backed by more reliable generation too.
  
  ie. To build 1MW of wind power, you need to add another 1MW of coal/gas/hydro/whatever to provide backup when the wind doesn’t work.
  
  This means building wind/solar generation is always going to be far more expensive than building thermal because it is an additive expense, not a replacement expense.
  
  If you go for solar/wind charged pumped storage (or batteries or whatever), you need to triple (at least, perhaps more like x5) the wind/solar to provide extra to fill the storage to tide you over the non-generating periods.
  
  Again, that makes a massively expensive system. Building pumped storage is more expensive than building hydro. That means 1MW of solar + storage really needs 5 MW of solar generation + 1MW of pumped storage.
  
  Using thermal for back up has the extra hassle of higher amplitude cycling. Thermal stations prefer to run at a relatively constant load for best efficiency. If they are filling in for solar/wind then they’re being throttled back one minute, then turned on the next – that reduces efficiency, making the system performance worse and increasing emissions. Hydro does not have this problem.
  
  The best way to structure the power usage is to run thermal as a constant base load then use hydro to fill in the slack when the PV/wind is not available. That means we’re using a renewable to replace a renewable – not very compelling – just very expensive.

  I presume you have access to the realtime power production and the source of the power. So that the 6MW of wind was an instant measurement at the time you wrote your comment. There is well over 600MW of installed wind power, so you are implying that it was only generating at 1% of theoretical capacity.     Yes Wayne. If you look at the weather map, there is a high over the whole country. Next to no wind occurs when that happens. And we often get frosty nights with it, which lifts the power demand a lot higher.
    I get more detailed info at work which can also go back years if need be, but there are confidentiality arrangements around that. Here is the live data from the grid operators.

  The problem in NZ is the “market” is driven by profit, is not punished for burning coal, and has little responsibility for decarbonisation.
  
  There is no choice but to build wind farms with pumped-hydro storage and solar on rooftops with battery storage.
  
  Big economies will punish defaulters with tariffs.
  
  Not to say the grand experiment to “cook” our habitat will not continue – the oil companies did a great job of brainwashing the public. And of course the billionaires found plenty of useful idiots…

The Government has been accused of having one rule for landlords and another for itself when it comes to meeting it’s own healthy homes standards.
In a fiery exchange in Parliament yesterday associate Housing Minister Poto Williams confirmed just 11,345 of a total 66 000 State Houses currently meet the healthy homes standards.
The Government has until the 1st of July 2023 to meet those same standards but has come under scrutiny over why Landlords had a different deadline.

Now a thought experiment. If English speakers were comfortable with exclusively Maori names for gatherings (or hui) this practice would emerge organically in social affairs and in commerce. But I can say with confidence that I have NEVER been invited to a hui in the private sector, except on a couple of occasions when we were meeting a predominantly Maori audience.

So my hypothesis is that State sector workers are being coerced to give every working group, every meeting, every organisation an exclusively Maori name. And to call every meeting a hui. Anyone who says “this is stupid” faces retribution.

I had lunch with a public servant a while back who told me that his organisation had given it’s key IT system an exclusively Maori name. Let’s be honest. That is bonkers. And I doubt that everyone thought “What a fabulous idea”.

Make no mistake – Jacinda Ardern would have been fully consulted on the making of a film about her handling of the Christchurch Mosque attacks.

How so? Because film makers first discuss and then secondly seek permission from those that they wish to film especially of an event of the horrific nature that was March 15, hence Ardern would have given her permission for the film project to go ahead and portray her as the central character.

Labour’s weasel words yesterday, that they are not involved in “production” is exactly that, weasel words and are a deflection. As others pointed out yesterday “production” means when filming gets underway, or the specifics of the film production as a whole (of course the PM won’t be part of the planning team noting every specific production requirement eg set build, production crews to be sought, their tasks and so on).

So the filmmakers would have discussed the concept of the film (pre-production planning) and sought Ardern’s permission.

And let’s not forget, who also is the Minister of Arts and Culture? She was informed all right!

So not only do we know that the Labour Party manipulates the MSM via their weekly conference calls to the main news editors … we know know that the Labour Party are doing the same with filmmakers (and as others pointed out yesterday, perfectly timed for the next election, in terms of accolades and publicity).

NZ is in the unfortunate situation where the Labour Party and its “celebrity” Leader/Prime Minister is manipulating public opinion on a scale never seen in NZ before.

(Even Joseph Goebbels would have been proud – surely the Labour Party are not referencing historical propagandists for tactics and ideas …. surely nah/yeah)?

So a quick scan of the online MSM headlines this morning … not one mention of this issue!Ardern’s four press secretaries must have wheeled in others to join frantic late night calls to MSM news editors to “shut this down”!

Anyway the next issue is, will this film go-ahead (despite the outrage in the Muslim community)? Or will the Muslim community be “bought off” (by being “consulted and compensated”) to ensure new voices are heard supporting this project?

But even if that were to happen, that will still cause divisions within the Muslim community.

However if there is one thing that Labour is apt at, it is their promoting of issues and policy that has unintentional outcomes that stoke divisions (as we are also witnessing on a scale never seen before in NZ on other issues eg race relations, energy resilience and escalating costs etc, not that the MSM or Labour see it as divisive, as they shut down dissent).

The right thing would be for Jacinda Ardern to say “No” to this project (she can, because it is about her). But I wouldn’t be surprised if that doesn’t happen and the film project goes ahead, but with a slightly different focus to (slightly) include more of the victims etc, to take the “perception” away that it is all about Ardern. But despite potentially weasel words suggesting this, in reality it will still be about, mainly, Ardern.

However she may find her reputation amongst the Muslim community may change, because one fine and outstanding aspect of the Muslim community I have noticed as a result of March 15 is their integrity. Which is something that Ardern lacks, and it is clear to see and it will become more obvious to more people than before.

That, in the end, might not be a good thing for Ardern … or Labour (and those MP’s that were “elected” via the upswing in covid support for Labour in 2020 … as it may not be there in 2023, so bye-bye)!

  The SNA requires land owners to ask council permission to do things on or to your own property. Try looking up the rules for what the SNA requirements are. Not easy to find. Nor is it easy to find out if your property is affected. Another loss of freedom if not stopped.

  I watched TV news coverage of this last night, and not that the viewer would really know it from the reporting, but blame should be sheeted directly back to Labour and the Greens in government.
  
  Apparently this is Jimmy Shaw’s project, obviously backed by his BFF Jacinda Ardern, but both are escaping media interviewing and grilling.
  
  (I see one prominent protestor blaming the council led by former National MP John Carter – but the night before it was reported that John Carter was seeking meetings with senior government Minister’s to discuss this attack on personal property rights).
  
  C’mon MSM, please do your job and hold this government to account, as they are the lead for these changes (and the more the MSM try and ignore the government’s role, the more NZ become divisive as community frustration boils over … which is good for NO-ONE)!

    Sorry about the length of this post.This is important.
    SNA’s have been around for most of this century.
    Most provinces have addressed this RMA requirement through their Environment Plans.
    There are now plan reviews going on creating 2nd generation plans and opportunities for further regulation.
    Council planners are ramping up the requirements of these plans because of additional legislation from central government, and their own experiences.
    These plans are tenure neutral , ie they don’t care who owns the land,the regulations will apply.
    In NZ law, people (possibly except Maori) ,do not own land, all that is owned are use rights.
    ( Ownership of land was to be included in the NZ Bill of Rights by a Bill promoted by Gordon Copeland MP.The Bill was rejected.)
    These use rights are being rapidly removed by Governments and Councils.
    
    The end result is effectively one class of land.
    
    The process of free holding of land, ie buying it from the Government, now means little change in use rights, only that the purchaser does not have to lease those use rights.
    
    As I said earlier these use rights are under huge threat, and SNAs are part of that threat.
    Taking rights without compensation is the norm, and enshrined in the RMA.
    Access to the courts for redress is unaffordable for most adversely affected and at the end of that process the only winners are usually legal professionals.
    
    What is the answer? I don’t know.
    The political battle is long lost.
    The legal battle is unaffordable and based on unfair law.
    Landowners are too fragmented to make a coherent appeal.
    
    For the individual, civil disobedience is probably all that is left, but that can not end well.

  There are no land title rights left. The Gulliblement implicitly abolished those with the Ihuamatao takeover. The registered land titles all now have to be considered as conditional only and subject to Maori activist consent.

  Really depends on how many staff are required from beyond Oz/NZ as they will need special category visas for entry.
  Why else would you take the commercial risk of continuing production without the certainty of allowing all support crew into the country.

If you own land and have what’s considered a significant natural area you will not be able to make changes without the council’s approval, and the council will be unable to give that approval without iwi approval.
However if you are an iwi, you can do what you like.

The Telegraph notes a swathe of Left-wingers have been appointed to leading Oxford positions. These include a former Guardian editor, a former controller of BBC Radio 4 and former Observer editor Will Hutton. All have been appointed college chiefs.

I had a few mates and their wives round for a meal and a few beers last night. No particular reason other than to celebrate a sunny few days.
The subject came up of what we wanted for our kids and grandkids. Despite being from a variety of political standpoints we largely agreed. The answer was nothing to do with wealth.
We wanted a country where our young ones would grow up smiling, happy with their World not saddened by angry faced people telling them the World was being destroyed and they had no future.
We wanted to see them grow up with ambition and hope for their futures, educated so they could provide for themselves and their families.
We wanted them to grow up in a respectful and tolerant society, not concerned about them worrying about sexual assault charges if they have a snog and cop a feel in the back of dad’s car.
Yes even the Greeny couple had to admit that in their teens they had done things that they would now be pilloried for.
Sosad we are doing this to our youth. They don’t have to be responsible they need to be there for fun as I was until I got to 50 years old and grew up.

A former colleague of mine works in education dealing with children who have learning difficulties. She and her collegues have been summoned to attend a 2 day meeting on Diversity. Former attendees have reported it involved haranging the white attendees to the point where they have to complete a survey on their racisim which is marked and they then have to stand in the circle determined by their racisim.
Many of her colleagues have been reduced to tears and suffered panic attacks as a result.
This is yet another step on the way to ensure Maori are the Supreme Race and that WhiteMotherF…… are the bottom race and are to be punished.

The end game of course is He Puapua the documents that dare not speak its name.

I have been directing everyone I can to the agenda of the Left Labour and the Greens and how they plan on elevating Maori and diminishing WhiteMotherF……

  Do two things are necessary in any and all such cases:
  
  1) Tell them to piss off in no uncertain terms.
  
  2) Take them to the Human Rights Commission on the basis of discrimination on racial grounds (s 21(1)(f) of the Human Rights Act 1993).
  
  Moreover, if this occurred under the auspices of a state education entity, then they are also probably subject to the Bill of Rights Act 1990, s 19(1).

    The racist maths stuff is blatant nonsense. Being trained in maths as a potential engineer I know both how fixed and how fluid it is. Everything runs to definition. That’s what makes maths a versatile descriptive toolbox. Engineers need fixed Newtonian measures and a corresponding algebra. Others work where the properties don’t allow axb to be reversed–bxa being not possible.
    Most school pupils don’t need maths at that level but a good recall of basic number facts and elementary arithmetic.

Interesting to hear the spokeswoman for the Muslim Community speaking with HDPA on ZB Drive last night.

She was telling Heather they have not been consulted about the making of ‘They are Us’…. and are completely opposed to a movie being made so early after such a tragic event, when it is still raw in everyone’s mind.
Although she did add, that if the Hollywood Producers were to approach them to discuss some sort of profit-sharing arrangement, they may well reconsider their stance.

Tourism will die if an alternative isn’t found soon to having homeless people living in motels, says a Rotorua accommodation provider. Kerris Browne says homeless people are taking up valuable bed space needed for visitors

About 400 households in Rotorua emergency housing.

The flow on effect will hurt many businesses that rely on tourist dollars if those with $$ can’t get a bed.

Meanwhile, has anyone noticed that HUD has not yet managed to publish their monthly report on public housing for March? March. This report includes numbers on the waiting list and places in motels etc. All those spin doctors working overtime?

The Government approved a policy at BP Petrol Stations to allow beneficiaries to misuse their Work and Income (WINZ) payment cards to purchase cigarettes, lotto tickets, and other banned items Newshub can reveal.
More incompetence from a Government out of it’s depthwith know intelligence on how taxpayers dollars should be spent.
Under Ministry of Social Development rules WINZ Cards can only be used to buy approved items like food, petrol, clothing, while purchase’s alcohol, cigarettes, lotto tickets and electronics are expressly Prohibited.
But Newshub has learned MSD signed off on a policy in December 2019 that let’s beneficiaries buy items that hadn’t been approved for.
BP says it adopted the policy because it was concerned about staff being abused when cards were declined or being misused.
MSD confirmed it sanctioned the money because BP had threatened to stop excepting WINZ Cards leaving them in a situation where some beneficiaries might not be able to get petrol in situations of “great need”.

Toby Manhire, the editor of New Zealand online magazine the Spinoff, writes below of an interview with Jacinda Ardern for the Guardian –

I have been asking Ardern about her immediate response to the attack, which from the outset put a clear emphasis on inclusivity and solidarity. Succinctly, steelily, the prime minister framed what had happened in her own terms. It felt very deliberate: was it?

Not so much, Ardern says. “Very little of what I have done has been deliberate. It’s intuitive. I think it’s just the nature of an event like this. There is very little time to sit and think in those terms. You just do what feels right.”
She crosses the office to her desk and pulls an A4 sheet of paper from a drawer. It’s been folded in half, and in half again, and again. Printed on the back is the running order for an event she hosted in Auckland the night before the attack. On the front are a series of notes, scrawled in Ardern’s rounded handwriting, growing more hurried and less legible as they cross the page. A handful of words have been highlighted in bright orange.
