This piece was written by CS Lewis in 1948. It speaks presciently to our own day and age: –

“How are we to live in an atomic age?’ I am tempted to reply: ‘Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of chronic pain, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.’

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways.

It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

The first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about death. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.”

    I don’t think we ALL are frightened, but we have let the State intrude into our lives far too much.
    Unfortunately, the modern education system (voice of the State?) has downplayed the lessons of history so that we have generations of parents who are not equipped to bring up their children with a realistic view to the challenges life brings, or find solutions.
    In my opinion, parents who deposit their children in daycare from an early age are abandoning their children to the caregivers – and who knows what their values may be? What is more, they are not learning to be parents.
    No wonder some ARE frightened.

    They may well be right.
    
    My recommended approach is to assume that everything is propaganda (including my own posts!) and test it with both real-world data, and in light what history teaches us.

  Far be it from me to find fault with C S Lewis. I confess to most enjoying his writing when I was 10 or thereabouts. I didn’t even recognise the tales as allegorical. Just adventure stories with mythical characters that drew in the kid in me.
  
  But the clue to his worldview is the allegory. His repainting of Christian notions for youth. His acceptance that after the ‘final battle’ we ascend to some heavenly domain. How lovely. But how it negates the need for personal agency. Agency that allows for action. As lovely as that quote is, and he is most certainly a wordsmith, it is utterly passive. What point fear when not only can we/do we not control our destiny but God’s loving embrace and the magnificence of heaven itself awaits us?
  
  Bollocks. Bollocks with a bright shiny bow. How about not allowing the bomb to rain down in the first place? How about a fight against proliferation, deployment, acceptance? Now those are fights worth having.
  
  “…let the bomb, when it comes, find us…” he writes. A sentiment really only applicable for the adherents of a death cult. Who wear and worship the instrument of torture that killed their idol. That believe it is of no consequence that death occurs because their magic book promises, with evidence of faith only, that life goes on, beyond the blast wounds, the radiation poisoning, the incineration and the evaporation.
  
  Two points to consider. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Faith is the reason for belief when there are no good reasons.

    Better? No, on the contrary I am inferior to this beautifully delivered message, one that resonates with quite a few people. And wow. Just wow. You are so triggered by Lewis having been a Christian. I guess we all have triggers. Mine include vapid, intellectually bereft PMs. Needless to to say I’m triggered daily.

You see headlines like these and you wonder why the Government want to explore why the ‘Mall terrorist’ could not be deported, well Jacinda Ardern had four years to do that and now it’s everyone elses fault not her own.
Sure other Political Parties should take a good look at themselves also as there was a hole in the Legislation that should have been fixed.
Jacinda Ardern likes making Captains calls like our gas industry and climate change before working out the consequences and a great example is Terrorist bride Suhayro Adan and her children to return to New Zealand when Scott Morrison refused to let them return to Australia.

  Through 2016-2018:
  April may 2016: Samsudeen formally warned by police. Did not stop posting objectionable material on the internet. On the radar of the Security Intelligence Service.
  May 2017: Arrested at Auckland Airport. Had said he wanted to go to Syria to fight for Islamic State. Hidden hunting knife and fundamentalist material found in his house. Charged, remanded in custody. (The first set of charges.)
  August 2017 : The Refugee Status Unit in Immigration New Zealand began review of his refugee status based on information received that he may be a threat to security.
  May 2018: Ardern makes inquiries about Samsudeen’s refugee status and deportation options.
  
  So, who to put on the list? (Michael Woodhouse was Immigration Minister from January 2013 until the end of September 2017.)

    Labour and the Greens wouldn’t support National in any bill concerning housing, security, immigration and many other things as National didn’t have the numbers to pass any legislation without help from another Party and if read what I said that other parties should take a good look at themselves also means the previous Government.
    Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister has got more numbers than any previous Government but continues to play the blame instead of getting off her arse and doing something about it, but no it’s better to use the COVID-19 fund to to get political points throwing money at other problems she can’t fund .

  The communists in the Labour and Green parties have never had more optimism and power over the people.
  They will not easily relinquish this new-found influence.
  Coupled to them are the hand wringers and teddy bear cuddlers who will seemingly accept any restrictions to their well being so long as they are tucked up safe and sound at home – but with the money still coming in.
  I am starting to really fear for the future of our democracy here.
  Look at the way even mild mannered dissenters (eg P. Williams) are being cancelled.
  We really need a robust opposition to the political situation we now find ourselves in.
  Where is it?

Newshubs reporting/activism of David Seymours quite reasonable tweet reaches a new low in our MSM. Misleading headlines, appeals to emotion, out of context photographs, claiming the tweet was “not based in fact”, the cry of fascism, only interviewing people form the Maori Party. It’s insanity.

This combined with the bizarre departure of Peter Williams in exactly the same manner as his colleagues before (as I predicted several months back I might add) has left the MSM without a voice. Ryan Bridge on the AM show is possibly the only one not a left wing activist left in the media. We have gone full propaganda.

Krazy. Yesterday you asked… Okahu, how about you? Noting your protestations of my ‘klaxons to alert us of your tyrannical forebodings’. Do any of the actions listed by Critical Thinker concern you? How do you feel about New Zealand mimicking Australia’s state/police/military treatment of it’s citizens?Well, thank you for your polite enquiry. I could just say ‘they don’t’ and leave it at that. But since, somewhat to my surprise you ask, allow me to elaborate. By the way, lovely framing of the debate. I am aware that under successive right wing federal administrations that Australia has been rallied, often helpfully just prior to elections, with political theatre. Claiming a threat to the identity or dignity or best yet, security of the nation, amplifying it mercilessly through the ‘friendly’ (Murdochian) media is part and parcel of right wing politics in Australia, the UK and the US. Last election cycle was the ‘attack on energy security’ by those wanting to stop a huge new coal mine. In an earlier example, the heady mix of invading ‘boat people’, particularly ones that could be painted as savages who would throw their own children to their deaths to secure passage to Australia, was too much to resist by the Howard led Coalition. And that Tampa episode, which on later, sober reflection, was revealed as a cynical voter manipulation exercise, with the most egregious lies told by the Prime Minister himself, certainly revealed no particular disdain for power through deceitful voter manipulation, rather than any more principled approach. As you rightly note krazy, in the manipulation of the populace, fear works.
And as we all know, that same administration began the downgrading of the rights (and perception) of New Zealanders in Australia, eventually leading to the arrival of charter flights of our citizens (but their criminals) to be dumped into our society. Argue the validity of their right to do so as you might, it is nevertheless a continued reminder of their right wing’s tactical use of state power for (conveniently helpful) political ends, albeit dressed as national interest. On this blog, it is all too common to read a contributor rushing to tell us how the Left never miss the opportunity to exploit a crisis. It’s a ridiculous canard and a bizarre assertion to make, one which can only be sustained by those determined to ignore reality. Particularly given the list of travesties Critical Thinker believes he or she has identified in the modern Australian body politic. All or most, as far as I can see are, to the extent they are real, the projection of state power by centre right state governments and their aider and abettor, the even further right Federal Govt of God’s (and Rupert’s) true friend and supplicant, ‘Scomo’. Now to what extent the ‘Critical Thinker’ list reflects reality or is the continued manifestation of the fever dream of fears this blog so often displays is moot. As I indicated above, I believe the moral delinquency of the Australian right and their ugly belief in their right to rule runs deep. It was demonstrated on the streets in the ‘Cronulla riots’ some years back and in the growing indifference, even contempt, they express toward our national sensitivities. From apple access to toddlers turned criminals returned to our shores, hard power is expressed one way only. They happily punch down. So really, I wouldn’t feign surprise if you have found they aren’t all sweet and light ANZAC brothers and all that. That they like a bit of threat and biff. But now we come to the revealing part of your enquiry krazy. The part where you attempt to shoehorn some imagined expression of autocracy or totalitarianism into New Zealand politics as if it being identified in Australia somehow proved it here. Such belief is consistent with your ongoing fantasy as regularly expressed here (to much acclaim), but is not in my view reality. And respect where its due, you do well to stand watchful against any encroachments of unwarranted powers against our civil liberties. All power to you. But your profound enmity toward the Left, their concerns and agendas, and in particular our left leaning government and its leader, has allowed a red mist to descend over your thinking. It has caused you to misconstrue reasonable state action as threat. Many have noticed the similarity of approach pursued by governments across the western world in responding to the ongoing public health and economic threats posed by the pandemic. We are indistinguishable from many in our use of historically successful public health measures, be they quarantine, isolation and the mandated ‘bubbling’ of our citizenry and shuttering of communal and commercial activity. (This is nothing new. Newton transformed humanity’s capacities while sheltering, isolated, from the plague, nearly four centuries ago). I believe that even the so-called printing of money to act as a Keynesian economic buffer, while internationally widespread, finds no favour with you. Indeed it clearly riles you no end that the vast majority of New Zealander’s support these approaches of a left wing administration and the success they have achieved. Approaches in the main supported across the political spectrum as you note yourself. But with quite a twist. Allow me to quote you, defining your position on NZ politics that you regaled us with only yesterday …”The Labour and National bands may have different uniforms and play different music, but they’re both marching us towards large state totalitarianism” and ” Deliberately terrified voters gave the current mob of dangerous charlatans an unconstrained mandate at the last election; and The laws that allowed this authoritarian disaster to be visited upon us were already on the statue (sic) books.” …because it tells us much. Most urgently, it tells us you are not a democrat at heart. From any reading of your screeds it is apparent you radically disapprove of not just the particulars of our approach, be they the use of movement restrictions or the mandated wearing of masks, (again, consensus positions across the centre of NZ politics), but that our society is organised so as to allow such measures to be employed at all. And really? The mandate you despise was the expressed will of the electorate, like it or not. God knows New Zealand had years of government by the party achieving a voting minority under FPP. The “dangerous charlatans”? Those are the duly elected peoples representatives. “This authoritarian disaster”? Public health Law? If he is right, is he unintelligent so his view should be taken under advisement? Or is he intelligent and tends toward insanity, so his view should be taken under advisement?

Ash dutifully reported that things are going great – 90% of cases on Monday caught covid from family members they are locked down with.
So are we to take it that covid is only dangerous if you catch it from strangers.
And, the government and MOH might not think that it IS really, really dangerous.

        There are many reasons why the elderly victims died in the rest homes. Among them is that rest homes are not hospitals – they may have an area where their elderly residents get basic nursing care – mostly by nurse aids, who are supervised by an RN who acts in a managerial capacity, not as a practicing nurse.
        Also, old people feel the cold. They get sicker when they get a cold, and they take longer to recover, which means more work looking after them. Windows are kept shut, heating is turned up. Old people don’t eat as much. They tend not to enjoy meals which require a lot of energy to eat. They don’t drink so much, because it takes too much effort to get to the toilet and the staff are so busy so they learn to avoid accidents.
        And in the more ‘homely’ rest homes staff are likely to be less aware of the need to observe good hygiene practices such as hand washing.
        Lets remember that people in Rest Homes are there because they cannot look after themselves, & are like birds in a cage, at the mercy of the cat should it get in.

      The virus has been reasonably proven not to be deadly in itself. It only seems to be hazardous when the elderly catch it or others with compromised health. Note the absence of postmortems and the proof of isolation of the virus. The people are being tested against unknown dna fragments.
      
      The real worry is the reports that the “vaccine” is now implicated in sensitising people so they will more likely catch it and pass it on. An own goal. The spike protein seems to cause havoc with internal systems and the “vaccine” packages it so it can cross the blood/brain barrier.
      
      If I was adjudicating this in Court my opinion is that the “vaccine” is potentially more hazardous than none. It’s advocates seem more political and pharma associated than medical people.

        One thing I have learnt over the past months: do not believe anything second or third hand, written by a ‘reporter’ who quotes some report or uses disparaging language about differing reports.
        I now only read specific medical reports, and listen to people with bedside clinical experience to report on. And you are right – emerging data shows that those who are vaccinated can still get symptoms, and pass on the virus to others – and the PCR test is openly acknowledged to deliver false positives
        As a result I take vitamin supplements and keep away from crowds. I mask up when I go on my fortnightly visit to the supermarket. And that’s it.

    In case you’re wavering about having a jab, here’s today’s figures from New South Wales:
    818 new cases Covid-19 in the community.
    3 deaths, 586 in hospital, 32 on ventilators
    100 in ICU, of these, 87% unvaxed, 13% had one jab. Noone fully vaccinated in ICU
    
    If you knocked 30% off those numbers to account for population difference we might not be very thrilled if we were in the same place. If we loosened up to “let it rip” it’s hard to imagine that the numbers would be smaller.
    
    The 818 cases is down from about 1400 a few days back. Go figure.

    What hasn’t been figured out is how it was then transmitted to the next person in the chain, from what I recall.
    The problem is if there’s a vacuum an army of conspiracy theorists rush to fill the void.

  Unfortunately that’s a rather peculiar reading of the figures, especially coming from a patient advocate – he should be looking at Quality-Adjusted Life Years
  
  Parking that for now and looking at the cost of the pandemic
  
  Even if we accept the ridiculous Hendy figure of 40,000 deaths the following applies
  
  His predicted deaths would occur in the over 70s so each “life” is, in reality, 1/6th of a “full” 84 year life (the average life expectancy in NZ)
  
  So we can divide that 40k by 6 giving 6,666 “deaths”
  
  We’ll ignore the QALY figures for this even though 1 year of life at say 84yo does not have the quality of a year at 25yo
  
  Now take that $62bn and divide it by 6,666 and you find that we effectively have spent $9m per life “saved”
  
  BTW that “life” might only have been 1 extra day or it could have been 65 years but, on average we’re “saving less than 10 years per patient

  Chuck, you raise a good question. Judged by the government’s actions a New Zealander’s life is not worth a lot.
  This is evidenced by the government allowing a pyschopath wannabe refugee to wander free in Auckland, by giving away our vaccines to Pacific island nations and by investing in setting up an apartheid health system in preference to increasing our ICU capacity. These actions point to a low value placed on the lives of kiwis.
  But the risk of losing a single kiwi life is a great excuse to exercise control by fear in implementing lock downs.

Susan St John has suggested as an option that the pension could be paid as a grant to everyone who qualified, with a higher tax rate be applied to all the other income of people who received it. 39% and 43% marginal rates mentioned.

Always good to have options on the table. But while there is no capital gains tax in New Zealand it is easy enough to draw down capital to live on with a little planning ahead. No tax, apart from a little bit from for example RWT, but easy enough to draw down in small chunks.

I recall a column From Mary Holm a while ago when some were asking why working people could also get the pension. IRD advised that would cost more to administer than it would save. Don’t know if that response included the contribution of working over-65s to the economy, but that would be considerable.

  Personally I don’t understand why someone on Super should pay a higher tax rate if they still continue working. Super is supposed to be something we all pay into that will pay out when we retire. Why should those with additional income sources be penalised? just tax them normally. People on Army pensions aren’t penalised with higher taxes on other income, why should retired people be?
  
  My big fear around Kiwisaver is that at some point the ‘lefties’ decided that Kiwisaver isn’t additional retirement savings and that you can’t get a pension until you have used up your Kiwisaver. At that point the poor or those who choose not to save, will in effect be better off. They will have enjoyed the use of their money while others saved, and everyone will be back to the same boat in retirement.

    Spot on Robo….the hidden not discussed intention for setting up the Kiwisaver scheme was to shut down the superannuation funding in the future. The present super payments come out of general funds (Taxs); so does the govt contribution to Kiwisaver. If you don’t contribute to Kiwisaver at the max rate, from day one of your employment, you miss out on a significant sum from the taxpayer..yourself.
    The biggest danger with the Kiwisaver fund is that a totalitarian govt will one day decide to invest the funds in ‘pie in the sky’ socialist dreams schemes.

      I personally have selected my Kiwisaver based, in part, on avoiding the ‘socially responsible’ funds. One mans idea of social responsibilty is not anothers. Also I think the primary goal is to make money, so wasting money (higher fees) on additional research AND avoiding otherwise good investments doesn’t work for me 🙂
      
      My current fund makes ‘social responsible’ noises but I don’t believe they are serious 🙂

      IMO, Kiwisaver is just another bucket of money the Govt can control and often to the detriment of the Joe Blogs foolish enough to put his money into it.
      I believe this will most likely occur when the Greens have a sizable number of seats/portfolios in another Labour/Green Govt.

    We have a graduated PAYE system. We already pay a higher rate on Super if it’s not our primary income. If Super is our primary income we pay a higher rate on our other income.
    
    Our National Superannuation scheme is a pay as you go scheme. There’s no pool of money that’s paid into for future superannuates.
    
    As Kiwisaver funds are held in private schemes, perhaps for the government to draw down on them would be a capital gains tax. This would suggest that you house, car, land, business etc will also be taxed.
    
    Interestingly enough we already do this if you have to go into care in a rest home.

      I understand we dont have a pot of money set asside for super, but the ‘contract’ we currently have is that on retirement ALL people receive $n super. The idea that people with second incomes should pay even more than they currently do seems flawed.
      
      Re Kiwisaver. Yes it is seperate from the govt. But there is nothing stopping any government saying ‘forget getting your govt super while you still have a positive kiwisaver balance’, i.e means testing. As you say Rest homes are currently means tested.
      
      I guess Im just against means testing super 🙂

    The aged pension is an ‘anti-destitution’ payment and was introduced so that those who leave the workforce have some money to exist on. Now however the pension has morphed into an ‘entitlement’ payment based on the fact that ‘all working people’ pay each years pension for the retired, thus believing that when they retire they are then entitled to the pension – they shouldn’t be if they are no where near ‘destitute’ — Why were people so willing to pay the wealthy an aged pension, only to then receive the same amount themselves?
    Paul Keating said much of the above when he introduced compulsory superannuation in Australia “So people who have worked their whole lives can retire with some money and live in dignity in their old age.”
    
    Superannuation returns far more than the pension. The pension should be phased out —- would you rather pay the pension of others while you are working each year only to get the equivalent payment yourself — or put all that money in superannuation each year to be compounded for yourself ? 😎

      Our current scheme was brought in by the National Government in 1977 as a universal entitlement for those over 60 (conditions apply).
      It was unbelievably generous at the time and income tax had to be increased.
      Since then it has been whittled away to merely generous.

    The tax you pay prior to aged 65 pays for someone else’s National Superannuation.
    The Super you collect is paid for by current taxpayers.

      In the USA there are a number of different retirement funds you can pay into. Everyone in private, non government employment, is required to pay into a “Social Security” fund. The employee and the employer equally contribute about 8% of the employees wages. Self employed people pay both the employers part and the employees part.
      
      There is an upper limit to how much you have to pay annually but basically people who earn more pay more,
      
      When you reach retirement age you can elect to start getting social security payments or wait and get paid more when older. The interesting thing is that if you pay more into the system because you earn more then you get paid more when you retire.
      
      The amount you get paid monthly depends on how much you paid in, the age when you start drawing from the system and the payments are based on the average of the highest amount you paid in over the last 20 years before retirement.
      
      Totally different from New Zealand where everyone gets the same amount irregardless of how much you earned or paid while employed. Anyone coming into New Zealand attaining the age of 65 gets paid the same superannuation whether you have worked here your entire life or not worked a single day.
      
      Furthermore, if you qualify for a pension from you overseas employment every dollar you earn from that overseas pension is deducted from your NZ super payment.
      
      It gets worse but I can’t be stuffed spending more time trying to educate others about the unfairness of the NZ super rules.

  There is a chance, but I knew of nobody dying.
  These day kids get vaccinated and don’t catch the measles.
  There are rare occurrences of fever and seizures from the vaccines and other side effects.

In past times, whole care annexes were devoted to the care of the children who had suffered catastrophic brain damage from measles infection.       It’s not an ailment to be taken lightly, in my opinion.
      Neither is measles.
      That’s why I’m vaccinated against both, plus the flu.
      If it takes an annual booster shot, include me in.

    One difference is the risk benefit ratio. For measles there’s something like a 1 in a million risk to the vaccine (of serious long term damage or death) and something in a 1 to 0ne-two thousand risk from measles. So the benefit is 1000 x better than the risk (note, rough numbers only, the vaccine risk is a little higher than that).
    
    For Covid, the risk for under 16’s is very low, way lower than measles at around 2-20 per million (varies as counting is variable, UK is 2, US is 20) and if you separate out healthy young people, the risk may be lower. The risk from vaccination in that age group is not negligible and although good figures are hard to find (and made harder as for example in the US reporting on such is purely voluntary) but is at least 3 per million and may be up to 10-20 times that.
    
    The risk to benefit ratio for Covid vaccination is quite possibly negative for young people. And the benefit for those under 50 may not be all that high but is probably positive and increases with age.

  I don’t have to “think” about this at all. There is evidence aplenty that the general populace thinks that lockdowns are better than covid. For example, consistent responses to opinion polls asking about people’s attitude to that question, the continuing popularity of the PM and the utter failure of an attempted anti-lockdown protest in Auckland.     Just FWIW, almost certainly a lab leak and not (initially) intended as a bio weapon. A heap of new documents has been released under FOIA in the US showing:
    
    The US funded research at the Wuhan lab of Gain of Function from 2014 on, approved by Fauci via Eco Health, contrary to US directions on GoF research;
    
    The research was on various Beta Corona Viruses (BCV’s) derived from Bats, and included SARS and MERS viruses.
    
    These were modified to increase their ability to infect humans by creating novel chimeric SARS related coronaviruses that combined a spike gene from one CV with genetic information from another CV, and confirmed that the resulting viruses could infect human cells.
    
    These viruses could also infect mice engineered to display human receptors on cells, specifically the ACE2 receptor.
    
    It was confirmed that the novel viruses were more pathogenic to humanised mice than the original “starting” virus.
    
    So it is clear that both the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director Anthony Fauci lied when asserting that the NIH did not support GoF research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at Wuhan.
    
    although not absolutely certain, we know that viruses exactly like Covid were created at the Wuhan lab in research that was at least in part, paid for by the US through machinations of various Health Officials there who were evading US restrictions on such work. Pretty much a smoking gun.

And that one notable side effect of the vaccine has been blood clotting/strokes; myo and peri carditis; and cardiac arrests.     The 60 seconds always sounded fictional to me, to knife 6 innocent people, one every 10 seconds sounded a stretch, in reality now looking like an untruth. The other untruth was when Cindy was confronted with how many other terrorists were roaming around with same protection. She could not answer because of security issues.
    Would that be the security of the terrorists or security of the public. I don’t think that is normal for innocent people to think they are going to be stabbed in a super market in NZ, but two incidents in six months may indicate that there is a much greater problem lurking secretly beneath the veil of secrecy than one could ever imagine.

    I can’t remember a single press conference where information hasn’t been given grudgingly, or simply met with a stone-faced refusal to confirm or deny.
    
    Compare that with an American police press conference, even in small jurisdictions, where their cops compared to ours look like subversive whistleblowers.
    
    Part of that is the willingness of NZ media to play the game or be intimidated, but mostly it’s the disdain the NZ Police show for any inquiry into their methods.

        None of them helped the impression of police competence and impartiality. Some made them look like dumb thugs and dangerous goons, but with a members only bar and a blue wall of silence protecting them.
        
        That said I remain pleased to have them around and expect, for the most part professionalism and competence in their dealings. Like putting down the Mall terrorist when needed. (Many thanks for that, so sorry it had to be done).
        
        I suspect the ‘woke’ culture you fear is them reflecting perspectives you don’t share. But they are for all of us. So there is that.
        
        And while respect is hard won it can be quickly and long lost, and not just because of a fleeting association with a favourite ideological bête noir of yours.

        Not sure if that was just another blip. The real start of the long decline in public confidence in the NZ police was, IMHO, the Crewe murders and the fitting up of one A A Thomas by the police. A crime BTW that has never been admitted to by the police, or apologised for.
        
        For many people, the obvious issues with that case were extremely troubling, and it was much worse when the revelations about the shell casing were made public.
        
        There have been cases since then that continued the undermining of confidence, but that, I reckon, started it.

What is not mentioned In the article, or pretty much anywhere really, is the impact of the 5 year bright line tax on rental sales. The first of those affected don’t get to keep their capital gains until 2023, and there are potentially north of 120,000 rentals in the catchment. A seriously big chunk. So hey maybe they are doing the sums and deciding that paying probably 39% of their capital gain to the government is fairly daft, and they will suck up the interest deductibility farce, increase the rent, leave the place empty, make other decisions about their asset. Because they can.

Any government Minister willing to comment substantively? Thought not.

Ferguson & ors seem determined to force us into their mathematical molds but where’s the proof to justify their actions? Has the virus actually been isolated?–the reports are to the contrary.

I have asked before who is checking our checkers? How do we know what is actually being tested for? The PCR method allows the possibility of being completely hoodwinked. False positives for political purposes can be produced to order. I would like more transparency and auditing in those circumstances.

Too many lives are being damaged by the lock downs and controls. I’ve got young people severely troubled through constraints on their freedom.

I see the luvvies are out in force outraged by Seymour. Why is a Maori life worth more than a Pasifika life (or any vulnerable person for that matter regardless of ethnicity)? Both are vulnerable but Maori get a special code to get easier access to vaccines. I have no issue with tailoring the message about vaccine to an ethnic group if it helps but this is a step too far. We should strongly resist as much as possible giving preferential access to any service or medicine in our health system based on ethnicity. All lives are worth the same

Corrections is being accused of housing the New Lynn terrorist in a mosque that had no system in place or the skills to safely manage him in the community. …
For 53 days, Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen was living in the annexe of the Masjid-E-Bilal mosque in Glen Eden. But the Muslim Association says he should never have been there.
The New Zealand Muslim Association was in discussions [for months] to help rehabilitate Samsudeen.
But they had no idea he was living at the Glen Eden mosque until Friday’s attack.

However – The Prime Minister on Monday backed Corrections’ decision-making.
“I’m confident agencies did everything within their power to keep the community safe,” Jacinda Ardern said.

I trust there is enough questions in the New Lynn terrorist attack to warrant a thorough inquiry.

Costs of other inquiries vary, Pike River being one example –
Little argues the cost of Pike River is comparable with a standard police homicide investigation, which can run to between $1 million and $2 million.
And from another source – As of last September, the government had spent $36 million on the re-entry, which, divided by 29, is below the average cost of a homicide investigation.
– but the fallacy in the above financial arguments is not multiplying the average cost of a murder inquiry by 29 (with respect to the victims) but determining the action of one killer, the source of the explosion, which killed the 29.

If those numbers are similar in New Zealand it is a great example of the effectiveness of the misinformation and fear mongering campaign worried out by the official sources of truth.
And explains why so many people favor elimination and lockdowns.

Apart from the fact that this is a dreadful look for the Green Party, does Ms Vano not realise that the Lynnmall terrorist specifically targeted “white people” on Friday? Suggesting that she’d like to commit homicide against white people just 72 hours after a terrorist tried to do just that is simply stupid stuff.

Where do the Greens get these people from?

Has anyone noticed the quality of the rural roads deteriorating over the last few years, potholes everywhere and where the roads have been repaired or resealed the seal is breaking up. this must either be reduced spending and/or poor quality materials being used. Have noticed this in rural Franklin but possibly the case for all areas.

Another thing annoying me is watching the buses in Pukekohe go round and round empty during covid lockdown, they are empty even out of lockdown so when will AT realise and reduce the number of buses and size of the buses, a taxi would be the best size.

Excellent news from the Free Speech Union:

Hate Speech campaign: supermajority of submissions to Ministry of Justice came from Free Speech Union supporters.

More than three-quarters of submissions received by the Ministry of Justice on the hate speech proposals came from our supporters using the FreeSpeechSubmission.com online submission tool.

Out of approximately 20,000 submissions, more than 15,000 came from Free Speech Union supporters like you.

That’s important. It means the Government can’t claim public support for their dangerous ‘hate speech’ laws.

And it is pleasing to see so many of the submissions were from members of minority communities. Contrary to claims by the likes of the Human Rights Commissioner, Kiwis are waking up to how free speech protects diversity and minority interests.

But the fight isn’t over. It appears that rather than backing down, the Government is gearing up for a major political push to back hate speech laws. The Human Rights Commission is currently employing seven spin doctors on an average salary of over $120,000 a year to try and push these reforms.

Surprisingly, despite their well-staffed and paid team, they haven’t managed to find a moment yet to respond to our requests for an interview with the Human Rights Commissioner, Paul Hunt.

Like some blind badger, National have been hungrily sniffing the political winds, but here is an opportunity to take that cynical approach and turn it into electoral gold. If with this kind of public dissatisfaction they can’t beat the drum, long and hard, and shout an unequivocal NO! then they are fools beyond belief.

  What is interesting is watching how the MoH Covid website lies by omission.
  
  If you look at the graphs you can see they are not all updated. When there’s a “bad” stat, they just fail to update it and hope people don’t see.
  
  The “good” stats are up to date – latest is 5th September showing vaccines received.
  
  The “bad” stats are old – especially the one showing current stock levels which is 9 days old.
  
  The average person looking at these graphs is not going to pay attention to details like this.

    Probably, in case you havnt guessed spelling isnt my strong suit.
    
    A random thing, When I was young and schools used to actually test kids, I always did very well in reading comprehension, but very poorly in spelling and reading out loud. Was quite the confusion to teachers, although it shouldn’t have been because its not that uncommon. Later on I realised it came from the fact that I dont read ‘letters’ or words, I read at a level of phrases to sentences so really struggled to learn to spell words (worked really hard at it, with extra tutors etc), mainly because I didn’t look at letters, rather a group of words. In the modern times i would be said to have dyslexia.
    
    Some people are even worse, can read whole paragraphs at a time, become super quick readers with good comprehension. But spelling and actually saying a word correctly is very difficult for them.

      I’m volunteering with a young lad who most uncommonly self-volunteered for literacy help.
      He doesn’t like reading and has never read a book/magazine etc in his spare time.
      
      However, he can read accurately( but slowly) and as long as unfamiliar words are explained to him, has no comprehension problems.
      
      But what he can’t do is read fluently and sense (or sight) the words that follow on from the one he is sounding out.

  As presentations, these pulpit sermons leave a lot to be desired.
  Ashley rattles off numbers from a script (new cases, current cases, tests etc etc), then a repetitive talk about kindness, logging in etc). If any business presented their financial results in such a retro manner they would laughed out of the boardroom. Where are the comparitive data to make sense of the numbers. Some graphics (not a meaningless scrap of paper prepared by Ardern minutes beforehand). Some visual trends.

That picture will never be painted. You might recall 2017 when English had 44% to play with and lost to that “genuine light weight”.

He knew Peters was going to be a prick about it, but a smarter leader would have worked the situation, giving Peters the baubles he adores, instead of turning the country over to this woke bunch. Clark managed to wrangle Peters in 2005 and with a lower vote percentage than English had.

National just got outwitted by Labour again, and everyone knows it was English’s personal antipathy towards Peters that screwed the pooch.

Further, Ardern would likely have lost the leadership and National would have been returned in 2020 for all the same reasons Ardern was.

Thirteen Stars: I don’t agree. Ardern was catapulted into the Labour leadership by a panicked Labour Party. It was a spectacular action which caught the current wave of late 30’s women (#they are us, remember? ) at the height of their power. And their sheep-like blokes.
What’s not to like about a smiling spirited woman in a red dress, black locks adrift, who appeared out of the blue just in time to represent her generation.

So a member of the public repeatedly complains (20 times) to Auckland Transport about potholes in a road. They can’t be bothered to do anything about it.

This member of the public then decides to draw attention to the potholes and help Auckland Transport by spray-painting around them – obviously so that when Auckland Transport finally get off their chuffs they’ll be able to find the potholes. Which leads to several issues:

Issue 1: Another member of the public complains, not about the state of the roads, but about the spray-painting to draw attention.

Issue 2: Police issue the spray-painter a formal warning – instead of asking AT why they are neglecting their job.

Issue 3: It very much sounds like AT still can’t be bothered to do their damn job and fix the potholes.

This is a brief update on developments since you signed our petition rejecting He Puapua, which is Labour’s plan to establish two governments in New Zealand by 2040, under which tribal elites will exercise authority over all major aspects of New Zealand’s governance.
It is now clear that Labour is rapidly implementing its radical race-based agenda without seeking our consent.
In February, we lost our right to petition for binding referenda on Maori wards when the Minister of Local Government, Nanaia Mahuta, changed the Local Electoral Act retrospectively after locals in a number of councils had collected enough signatures to demand a vote.
Minister Mahuta knows that New Zealanders do not support racial separatism.
Then the Government announced plans for two health systems – one for Maori New Zealanders and one for the rest of us, and with the Maori Health Authority having a veto over what the general health authority does.
Now, Labour is pushing through their Three Waters Plan that would confiscate water assets from local communities, handing the business of water management to four mega-authorities under 50/50 council/iwi control.
This means that iwi, which are private tribal groups that claim to represent just 15 percent of our population, would gain a 50 percent control of the management of all New Zealand water services.
Cabinet papers reveal that Labour has had 60 consultation meetings with Maori groups over the Three Waters Plan. Yet to date there has been little or no consultation with everyone else despite provisions of the Local Government Act requiring councils to consult with all members of the public – not just Maori.
The quiet implementation of He Puapua looks like a silent constitutional revolution.
Saying nothing legitimises He Puapua.
What you can do: Please email or, better still, phone your local councillor and let them know that you strongly object to the Three Waters plan. Remember – silence equals consent.

  Scomo started the 5M vax idea back in June at G7, and it has just been confirmed now. G7 countries at the height of summer well into the downward track of their outbreaks and not aware of the need for a booster where willing parties.

  Their argument is “Equity” but the reason Maori aren’t getting vaccinated is because they’re choosing not to. It’s got nothing to do with systemic racism etc.
  
  They say that Seymour wasn’t worried about priority treatment when it was old people getting it but being old is a risk factor. Being Maori isn’t.
  
  Maori do not inherently have risk factors. Those individuals that do did actually get priority vaccinations, often at Maraes if they wanted them. This issue is for healthy Maori who have no reason to be given priority. It’s also worth noting that the Ministry of Health was doing “open vaccinations” for everyone in some heavily Maori areas early on so this isn’t the first time Maori have been given priority. Almost all the advertising has been aimed at Maori and Pacifica too.
  
  Maori have the lowest vaccination rates because many Maori are choosing not to get vaccinated. It is fundamentally unreasonable to give them preferential treatment based on this.

Haven’t read through a lot of the posts today, so apologies if this is a repeat. I heard today that the lovely Tova O’Brien recently called David Seymour a “cockwomble”. So does this mean we can call She Who Must Be Obeyed or even Tova herself a VaginaMuppet? I’m hoping the moderators don’t get offended there. But hey, if you can say Cockwomble I can say VaginaMuppet! Time will tell.

A Levin Maori man with a facial Ta Moko tattoo is violently assaulted by two Pakeha males.

Why is this attack not a surprise? … why are questions raised of the Maori man offering violence in the fist instance? … why did the press so fulsomely report the victims uncorroborated report of the incident.

See where I am going on this?

The antipathy … and far worse … of racial relations in New Zealand currently is now a product of public policies favouring Maoris … of Pakeha anger looking for an outlet and a Maori advertising a warlike so termed “cultural” position with a Ta Moko that invites aggression.

A tattoo of this kind is NOT a neutral cultural statement though clearly it should not be (but it is!) a red flag to rednecks either.

Oh well this is just NZ circa 2021.
