This is all about creating ethnic divisions. She is literally saying that people who are not Maori regard people of Maori ethnicity as “expendable”. It is quite a shocking claim.

“Māori Party co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer said the [COVID] plan showed “Māori were always expendable” as about 56 per cent of eligible Māori have one dose of the Pfizer vaccine, compared to 73 per cent of Pacific people and 79 per cent of all people aged 12 and over.”

So she is saying that Maori are more prone to influence by misinformation than people of other ethnicities? That is patronising and insulting.

There is now no shortage of vaccine. How is any person of Maori ethnicity prevented from being vaccinated?

For whatever reason, many younger Maori don’t want to get vaccinated. Perhaps the leader of the Maori Party could offer some solutions instead of making racist statements and blaming colonisation.

  I don’t think the situation is as clear as that, Benedict.
  I have very little time for the Maori Party MPs and their pronouncement. They are speaking to their voters, and not to you or I.
  Being of Maori ethnicity in New Zealand is a fairly reliable proxy for challenging social and economic circumstance. All groups of the relatively poorer, less educated, etc are going to be much harder to reach than wealthier and better educated people.
  But this sort of conversation rapidly descends to the nonsense of attributing stereotypical qualities to different ethnic groups, and empowers the extremists of all kinds who want to see everything through a racial, even racist lens.

    We should open up – or begin to – from December 1, at which time everyone has had equal opportunity to choose to be vaccinated. After that, your decision, your risk.
    
    I have a (non Maori) friend who doesn’t want to get vaccinated. Ok. So be it. His choice. Move on

    I agree with you to an extent. Maori are over represented in the poor outcomes metrics. For reasons we could talk about all day.
    
    But there are different factors at play here. Maori vaccination rates for Maori 65 plus are not significantly lower than for non Maori older folk. But for younger Maori, the rate crashes.
    
    TBH I have no issues with trying harder with younger Maori but I don’t know what gets through to them. But other people will know.
    
    However after all efforts have been made, it is time to say “Its on you”. I don’t want the Maori Party crying “racist” on low vaccination rates 6 months from now. I am not hopeful.

    That is an accurate observation. All organisations purporting to represent Maori only ever and always promote exclusively for Maori. Judged by those actions Maori would seem to be the most self-centred, selfish bunch of people in NZ.
    Read articles in Te Tangata by young Maori and it is depressing how absorbed they all are in themselves. It must be something learned young, to self-pity and use this as justification for normalising handouts as the way things are done.

      That’s because the slow rollout and lack of vaccine meant it was targeted to those most at risk, the elderly. Until 1st September, two weeks after Delta had arrived, young people of all ethnicities were turned away.

        If you want to make the case that they haven’t been discriminated for strongly enough, you can probably do so. But you’d need first to make the case as to why such discrimination is necessary.

        If you go to Herald/Advocate articles around May/June? you’ll find evidence of whanua providers opening up to all comers irrespective of ethnicity and age/vulnerability status. Members of my extended family, (non maori and some of them under forty were vaxxed) back then. There was insufficient uptake in key target demographic so better to give to those outside target demo than waste. The non whanua providers didn’t open up the same way.
        So no not all youngsters.
        My bad for not being specific to “no one has stopped anyone from getting vaxxed”

    Racial medical prioritisation and identity politics itself causes hesitancy. Pushing a single ethnicity to the front of the queue while targeting their neighbourhoods and bribing them with kfc and other prizes for a new technology vaccine , surely leaves them wondering in the early phase if it’s a gift or if they’re guinea pigs.   A sweeping generalisation that is totally self-serving bullshit. I would wager that many non-Maori recognise there are many good and capable Maori who are making their way very well in the world. Ngarewa-Packer, on the other hand, probably sees no good in any non-Maori and would like them to be expendable, or even expended.

      When you have a Govt that indicates one section of society is more deserving of handouts than others, you create division and resentment.
      IMO, let’s make the great RESET part and parcel of the next election whereby a case is made for a halt to all dole, sickness, and dependence benefits, reset the criteria for each category and invite past recipients re-apply.
      Those who qualify under the new criteria will not only be deserving recipients but there may even be more money to be spread around, or we could make payments towards reducing our national debt.
      Those who fail to qualify, tough luck, they have sucked off the public tit for too long. GET A JOB!
      If we pursue this idea, there will be a reduction in the necessity to import foreigners to undertake work that our previously unemployed would not.

  Such a pity that the spokesperson in these matters appears to be such an unmitigated moron, for there are important issues here that need thoughtful, open minded debate.
  
  Isn’t there anybody in public life who is intelligent and patient enough to develop, and explain in a clear, courteous and non-judgemental way, what the issues around racism actually are these days?
  
  It appears that it’s no longer the ideal to treat everybody the same regardless of their race. One can see that that can be problematic, when the way in which you wish to treat everybody, is your way. (Imagine fish unable to understand what would be wrong with holding all the important meetings underwater. Some mammals, eg dolphins, would be fine with that, why shouldn’t other mammals do the same?).
  
  OK, so if that’s not what we should be aiming for- what is? Are we looking to develop a single system which does work for everybody, or two or more systems so that each individual gets to participate in the one that suits them? Separate meetings on land and in water (and up trees, and in deserts, and high up in mountains, etc); or underwater meetings where the mammals are provided with scuba gear, or land meetings with mobile fish tanks?

  All in the EU have their borders open and most of them they are not so much worried about the cases, now they are rather looking at the level of hospitalisation.
  Expect Portugal no one has reached more than 80% fully vaccinated.
  Plus in the models are some major flaws, it does not consider the overall health of the population.
  Here most of the Pacifica People and Maoris are more in unhealthy state of affairs, most of them are heavily OB’s, low immune system, not favourable diet etc.
  That’s most likely one of the main reason the latest outbreak happen in South Auckland.
  And by now NZ Government should understand there is no way out thru an elimination strategies as they in the EU already discovered a long time ago.

  I have yet to hear from any significant Maori leadership member comments exhorting the tribe to get out of bed and go down to the Vaccination centre.

Political Parties have slammed the Government’s plan to ease restrictions in Auckland, saying it creates confusion and puts vulnerable people at risk.
This has never been about people and the Prime Minister is kidding you if she has convinced you it is , this is about jacinda and Labour wit their internal polls and obviously it is showing the Prime Minister and Labour are losing control with the questions they are asking Aucklanders and that is political capital Jacinda Ardern can’t afford to lose in New Zealands largest City especially with the largest voting population.

Remember the outcry with high cases & death rates
Belgium
India
Brazil
Indonesia
Sweden
and then those who were lauded for control of Covid
Singapore
Taiwan

So how is that all working out.
One would expect that the high vax countries should show a decline/very low death rate?
While Low vax rate countries should show more deaths. Higher death rate?
Seems logical.

Interestingly as at 5th October.
The death rate across all of them seems to have settled in the less than 1 death per day per million.
Note that Ireland amongst the highest vax rate,(and touted by TVNZ) breaks that rule and has death rate of 1.15 also that Taiwan at the lowest vax rate,, also lowest death rate.

  There’s nothing magic about 90%. It is an arbitrary target Ardern has been advised is unattainable.
  
  This helps create a divided society where blame for any negative outcome can be laid at the feet of the untermenschlich unvaccinatued.
  
  The same people who worshiped Ardern as their saviour will, on cue, focus their opprobrium on the unvaccinated – without any basis in science and with vehemence fanned into flame by the state purchased media.

      The unvaccinated are the scapegoats to deflect blame from the govt. . The latest infected person from Raglan (I am assuming young because is in a boxing match) is unvaccinated – gasp
      
      If you were 16+ you were eligible for your first shot on 1 september so the 6 week recommended interval isn’t till the 14 Oct for your next shot.
      
      And if your 30 – 40 you were eligible on the 25th Aug so even if you got your shot on the first eligible day, the recommended interval for second shot isn’t till tomorrow.
      
      So stop scapegoating the young unvaccinated. It’s hardly like they’ve been procrastinating for months. And many maybe waiting to see the safety data which is still weeks late. And 19 death reports awaiting investigation starting in July of which we still have no details or assurances. The whole thing is a disgrace of scapegoating, authoritarianism and blame and bullying to force people to rush into a medical decision which for the young may not make sense.

    However the higher the vaccination rate, the fewer the restrictions are required to reduce the chance of the hospital system falling over.

      dannz, that ‘hospital system falling over’ observation is practically a meme now.
      
      In every verified instance of overload (that I have found, so may not be exhaustive), those systems have regularly been overloaded in previous ILI seasons. In other words, capacity is insufficient for routinely expected peak loads.
      
      The solution, obviously, is to increase capacity rather than implementing futile, and societally damaging interventions to limit ‘demand’.
      
      The UK increased capacity with their temporary ‘Nightingale’ hospitals, most of which were decommissioned without caring for a single patient. By comparison, our government has overseen a reduction in ICU capacity while the pandemic played out. Go figure.

  The thinking once was that a high enough vax rate would ensure herd immunity. That is when enough people are immune that the disease can’t spread and dies out. You can calculate what percentage of the population would need to be vaccinated for that to occur, it is roughly (1-1/R) expressed as a percentage where R is the natural R value. R originally was estimated to be about 6 which would give a target of 87.5% to achieve herd immunity. The R value for delta is thought to be higher so you’d need more. Politicians liked that idea because it gave them a fixed target; just vaccinate a certain percentage of the population and job done.
  
  However all of this herd immunity calculation stuff became instantly obsolete once it became clear that vaccinated people could get infected and pass on the disease. Herd immunity is simply not achievable by vaccination in those conditions. However a lot of our politicians didn’t get the memo. They have fixated on the percentage vaccination target and lost sight of the real end game.
  
  The best end game for us now is different. It is to first make sure everyone who wants the vaccine has had a chance to get it; secondly to be stocked up and ready with treatments such as the treatment pack handed out in India for home treatment and supplies of monoclonal antibodies for hospital treatment of more serious cases. Then when we are ready we just open up.
  
  There would be an inevitable spike of cases to endure, hopefully without too many deaths, and once that is over we should reach the happy state where covid is just another mild respiratory illness circulating in the community and is no big deal.
  
  This is the only option left for us now. Endless lockdowns are not realistic. We have to pass through the fire to get to the other side.

  Well, Singapore has close to 90% of their population with at least 1 jab, and has had a fairly strict mask mandate since April. That mandate is followed pretty well by almost everyone.
  
  So of course, since these are exactly the tactics being prescribed to us, Singapore has few cases and dropping, right ?
  
  Well, actually, cases are up by 5000% since August, and they are still rising. That’s from a low base, but still a pretty astronomical increase.

This recent study shows that the jabbed are more susceptible to Covid variants because their immune system has been instructed to attack only the one strain of Covid, whereas unjabbed people have memory T-cell immunity if they have had Covid.       I don’t think it is easy to keep this going until 2023.
      
      The spending for that, using debt, will quickly get the rating agencies like Moody’s etc into action. Once they downrate NZ sovereign debt due to higher GDP debt ratios and slowing growth, the domino effect on the economy and resulting economic chaos will make it impossible to keep funding that option.
      
      And BTW, one cannot compare the debt/GDP ratios of large countries like USA, China, Japan, Germany etc to what NZ can get away with. Smaller countries with low growth but with high debt/gdp ratios are essentially basket cases.
      
      A better comparison for debt/gdp ratios is with some of the smaller economies in Scandinavia etc.

The virus does exist but it is like Legionnaires Disease in that it is environmentally related, especially to do with ventilation, and if we freakin’ worked this out, we’d be no more in a hysterical panic about it than we would be about Legionnaires Disease. Oh, one other significant difference is that you only get Legionnaire’s Disease from the environment, it doesn’t then go from person to person. But Covid does go person to person with deadly consequences, only in limited environmental conditions. The rest of the time it would be just another latent virus that eventually gets into everyone in trace amounts. Covid-19 is the first time we have deployed expensive hyper-high-tech diagnostic tools (at taxpayers expense) to track the progress of a new virus into latent conditions in the population. We call it “asymptomatic infection” now but the correct term is “latent virus”.
    
    Most of us would have traces of most viruses that have done the rounds of humanity, without ever having suffered the actual illness related to that virus. Not until PCR did we have the means to confirm the “latent virus” hypothesis.

    Auckland remains in Level 3 except for a few conditions that permit you to be closer to Level 2
    but with the restrictions of Level 3
    while allowing for the Level 2 freedoms
    but maintaining a Level 3 threshold with a Level 2 range
    while keeping a clear Level 3 environment
    that will allow you to do those Level 2 activities
    as long as they meet the guidelines of Level 3
    but this is only on the condition that the Level 2 processes are structured to fit inside the Level 3 road map.

        I would say that there is a cohort among the unvaccinated people of color who are actually extremely well informed and do understand this about outdoors. You will be right about some proportion of them. But the young church-going PI who cuts my hair is extremely well-informed.
        
        In contrast, I keep pointing out that my nice middle class friends who are pro vaxxine and can’t wait to get their jet-setting lifestyles back just as soon as everyone has been forced to take the jab, don’t even know what “mRNA” means. They assume this is “just another vax” with an equivalent back-trail of trialling and approval, so “of COURSE people who don’t want it are stupid and ignorant”.

Average 30 new ro cases per day in Auckland. Auckland population 1.65 million. So my models shows that in 55,000 days or 150 years everyone in Auckland will get the covid. My model shows that lockdown for next 150 years will mean the hospitals can cope. That’s my expert advice to the PM.

Jack Tame on yesterday’s “roadmap” announcement:

First the Government lost control of the outbreak. Now, Jacinda Ardern has lost control of the comms.

The extraordinary post-Cab media conference on New Zealand’s Covid-19 future proved a frustrating and confusing watch for anyone trying to understand the Government’s true position on the state of the Delta outbreak and its strategy from this point forth.

There are no metrics by which to plot Auckland’s pathway. No explicit vaccination targets. No infection suppression targets. No dates. We have no idea when or under what circumstances the border around Auckland will be relaxed.

Certainty is a rare commodity in the Covid-19 age (and we in the media are perhaps guilty of demanding it too much), but the vagueness of Cabinet’s future decision-making might be more palatable to an increasingly-frustrated public, had several recent elements of the Government response not undermined the clarity and decisiveness that defined its early Covid-19 strategy.

Moving Auckland to Alert Level 3 was not consistent with elimination. It was a gamble that risked the gains from a month at Level 4. The Government continued to speak optimistically about stamping out the virus, even as public health experts and modellers publicly demurred.

Two weeks on, predictably, infection numbers are increasing. Despite the warm reassurances in Monday’s media conference, the period at Level 4 didn’t see nearly enough Aucklanders vaccinated to justify the shift, if indeed elimination was the strategy. The gamble didn’t pay off.

Tame’s comment about the PM having “lost control of the comms” is a particularly harsh assessment. Let’s not forget that the PM has a degree in Communications, is regarded as an excellent communicator, and has a team of people working on her communications strategy day and night. But yesterday was a clustershambles, and when the likes of her most vocal supporters Neale Jones, Clint Smith and Morgan Godfery are telling her she’s wrong, then there’s clearly a problem.

But this has been in the making for a number of weeks. The PM has stuck to her elimination strategy like sh#t to a blanket, until yesterday when she told the media that we would begin to transition away from elimination.

Jacinda Ardern will be glad the Parliament is in recess for the school holidays, and she won’t be subject to daily barrages of questions. However the opposition parties and even the Greens will be quick to fill the parliamentary void with their disdain for the PM’s policies. Judith Collins put out a statement last night which began “The Government’s incoherent and timid approach to the Covid pandemic shows it lacks the courage required to make tough decisions for the benefit of New Zealand”.

The next few weeks are going to provide a real test for the Ardern government, and unless she can come up with something more coherent that what was served up yesterday, the Government will be found wanting. She may have plenty of time for picnics.

    For me, this is the worst part of this clown show approach to covid. If they had combined an elimination strategy, to buy time, whilst rapidly ramping up ICU and other health resources, actively learning from the rest of the world so we would know what works and what doesn’t, using our natural isolation as an asset, we could be getting ready to open up knowing that we were well placed to manage whatever was coming. Instead, they got off to a reasonable start and then did…….well pretty much nothing but patted themselves on the back and took in the praise from the adoring masses.
    
    The marathon analogy is sadly apt – they celebrated winning the 100 meters but the race is still ongoing and will be for quite some time. The worst is yet to come and we will all end up paying for this.

The sad part about it all is that the last 18 months of Cindy’s Kindy’s zero Covid program have been a total waste of time and we are literally back to square one. Perhaps now they should look at other avenues of combating this virus.     Until they actually look and act like a government in waiting – Labour will have free reign. Because to a lot of voters – the though of Collins as PM is a much worse outcome than anything the Labour party has done or is doing thus far.
    
    Even with right voters – many see David Seymour now as the rightful leader of the opposition – and the one that can actually provide any sort of credible alternative to the Govt.

I have just been reading about the murder of Anthony Takrouna Bell of Te Kuiti that occured in the Maniapoto Street Otorohonga.
He was killed according to eyewitnesses with an axe by two patched Gang Members.
That this has caused so little outrage by gov’t and iwi elites as well as the MSM just shows how so inured and conditioned by these appalling events we have become as a country. The Prime Minister was quick to go on national TV and callout and bad mouth Brian Tamaki whose organisation has never killed anyone but not a word for the murdered Mr Bell and his lovely family.
But no it is all Covid Covid Covid. No one has died of Covid in New Zealand in the last twelve months. Tell me Prime Minister how many people have been murdered by your friends the criminal gangs in the last twelve months.
A decent Gov’t would call for a national Day of Mourning for this man.

  Debt does not matter if you use the borrowed money to invest and grow your economy. Then the ability to repay really does outstrip the increased debt. The real problem is low quality spending. Unfortunately, valid criticisms of low quality spending are often not as politically effective as unsound criticisms of the fact that money is being borrowed.

Below is an episode in the lives of business people who live north of the Auckland/Northland border, but operate a business in the Auckland Region.

This is a tale was posted on Facebook before NZ learned of the confusing “Road Map” was presented during yesterday’s4pm show and tell from the Podium of Truth.
This episode amply demonstrates the confusion amongst the “mini-Hitlers” of the NZ police and MBIE. It also demonstrates that there is part of the government sector that is all about mindless control and making rules up as they go along to suit their own decision-making processes. A case how can they possibly be wrong, when as we saw yesterday, the decision making at the top is confused?
This episode was posted on the local Facebook page and relates to a business in Warkworth.
“Bonjour everyone, “Covid Checkpoint Border Crossing” Episode 2!
After being turn back last Monday and told that we needed a MBIE travel authorization to be able to go through I did apply for one. MBIE denied it as we are not an essential business (what? Coffee, not essential?! I disagree… ) so I called the Covid Unite Business Helpline for advice. They said we did not need a MBIE pass to start with as travel in and out of Auckland from the Northland to go work to a level 3 business is permitted. Hooray! They kindly emailed me the link to the page which says that. Last Friday, after having renewed our Covid test and using that email we have finally been allowed to go through but the police officer at the checkpoint emailed me in the morning to let me know that after discussing it with his superiors they were not able to accept it as valid to go through the border and that without an MBIE authorization I will not be let through in the future… Back to square 1…
So, dear customers, I am sorry (again… ) but Xx Xxxxxx will be closed today as I need to spend the day calling MBIE, Ministry of Health, Restaurant Association and who knows what to finally be able to get the authorization to go to my own shop.
Hopefully that will be sorted by the end of the week but in the meanwhile the shop will reopen for contactless takeaway orders tomorrow morning at 9am ”

What this example shows is that:

1. Jax and her merry bunch really do not care about the income earning and tax paying interests of New Zealanders;
2. Jax and co are not in control of the petty bureaucrats administering how the lockdowns are enforced. Indeed, Hendy this morning has been telling the world on TV that NZ will not go back to enjoying the freedoms we were previously enjoying under Level 1. Who the hell elected Hendy and gave him the right to say what freedoms New Zealanders can and cannot enjoy?
3. NZ’s government and the petty bureaucrats together with the police force are making the rules up as they go along, showing all the signs of a totalitarian state.

Finally….thank you to the people who voted for Jax, I hope you feel safe now, given what you in your infinite stupidity with your voting preference last year unleashed on New Zealand and New Zealanders. May you enjoy your 10 person picnic with your grandchildren in Auckland’s liquid sunshine this week. My grandfather did not go to war in 1915 for new Zealanders to suffer this abomination!

It seems to me that Covid management in NZ is a four horse race.
Our Ability To Tolerate Lockdowns is flagging fast and looks likely to drop out.
The Rate of Vaccination looks unlikely to finish and would have been better suited to a shorter course of 80%.
Increasing Hospital ICU Capacity has been scratched and will not be running today.
So it looks like the clear winner will be The Virus which is running faster than the other horses. The Virus is being ridden by Jacinda Ardern who is a real lightweight but knows how to use the whip.
Luckily very few bets have been placed on The Virus and the winner’s pool is minor.

  Here’s one. I’ve heard there are one-shot vaccines available (overseas – you know, where the rest of the world lives). I’m guessing if you took one-shot vaccines to gathering places of these young folks (and some not so young) who can’t be bothered, a few more of them would bother.

Rightly or wrongly, things are about to become very difficult for the unvaccinated.

The other day my company received its first letter from a customer advising that contractors would not be allowed on their site unless they have evidence of having the two jabs.

I expect this sort of thing will soon become main-stream.

The problem we have with employees who are not double-jabbed is what to do with them if their refusal to get vaccinated means they can no longer do their jobs.

I also see that Air NZ is refusing to carry international travelers unless they are double jabbed. I expect this will be extended to domestic fights soon.

And when the vaccine passports come out expect that restaurants etc won’t let in those who can’t prove their vaccination status.

  If restaurants are doing so well they can afford to turn patrons away, that’s great news for NZ! Same goes for every business who only decides to serve the vaccinated. It’s wonderful news that people are so able to turn down workers and customers. What an amazingly robust economy we must have. I had heard that there were massive shortages in the trades, but I suppose that’s a rumor.
  
  And how not at all demeaning to have to present your medical papers to a minimum wage employee in order to access an entirely optional restaurant. What a wonderful and not at all grotesque display of submission to authoritarianism. I’m sure every kiwi will proudly present their papers to whoever demands them, and this will all end very well indeed.

      Citizens can’t be discriminated against at will. An individual within reason can decide that someone may not enter there territory. Keeping them out is another problem–assault is not permitted and a trespass notice may be needed to be served to be enforceable.

  I wonder what the legal implications of corporate mandates are. We know that pfizer has wiped their hands of any liability. But if companies require staff or customers to vaccinate do they take on some of the liability if it goes wrong. Air NZ requires there staff or customers to be vaccinated (rare side effects can include blood clots) and they fly (rare side effects is that it increases blood clots) then are Air NZ responsible taking responsibility that flying with the vaccine will not increase blood clots and thrombosis etc. If you require your staff to vaccinate and it goes wrong are you liable?

    Rather looks to me (after reading a few useful sites) that Facebook stuffed themselves up by a bad update of their BGP entries. That basically removed their own DNS servers from the internet so they could not be found. That rippled out as other DNS providers removed their links as well.
    
    Because BGP sort of underlies DNS even direct requests to the FB IP addresses failed as servers did not “know” the links to get to those addresses.
    
    Funniest part is that at least some of the corrective actions would need to be carried out by direct local attachment to the primary servers at FB, but techs couldn’t get access to the buildings and server rooms because those have controlled access that is, wait for it, controlled by those very same servers that are no longer accessible. Luckily for FB it does appear that there were people on site who could make additional changes to bring them slowly back on line.
    
    A maintenance error does seem to be the simplest explanation, would not be the first of its type though probably the largest impact one. There could be a more nefarious reason to want to go dark briefly, but seems unlikely and Occam’s razor would suggest that a simple fuck-up is the likeliest explanation.

  No the “target” is 90 percent of people over 12. It will stall at 78 percent. It will creep up slowly to 80 percent over the next 12 months. It will only get to the high 80s if there are big sticks – e.g. if Air New Zealand bans unvaccinated people from domestic flights, which I think is unlikely.

    It will spike up another few percent as the reality of a huge surge in cases and endless scare stories of deaths and hard-pressed hospital saturate NZ media in lead up to Xmas.
    
    I actually think letting it rip in south auckland might work out ok – its a smallish and perhaps least disciplined part of NZ population which NZ’s limited hospital capacity may be able to handle, before it gets into rest of population. Most other populations are more spread out and will generally opt to modify their own behaviours to flatten the curve, before fatigue and give-no-fucks attitude starts to overwhelm initial panic in a couple of months.

  Many of them also say that the world is heading for “resource wars”. I challenge them if they are “pro defence” or pro alliances like ANZUS, and none of them are.
  
  My conclusion then is that they are traitorous agents of the CCP who are fighting to have resources left in the ground for the CCP to help themselves to one day.

I know that this government does not care whatsoever about sport in general unless it is a trans gender going to the Olympics or a photo op but they are destroying our National game. We now have a National Rugby Championship being played without spectators except for a few family members and even worse without teams from Auckland, North Harbour and Counties. Early on these teams asked for permission to relocate to Taupo so they could continue (as all Australian sports teams have done so successfully for the last two years – more Queensland, not Taupo) but were refused.
This now means that in this age of professional sport and a pathway to a decent living for many in that area that those players are being denied any chance of displaying and improving their skills and possible selection in Super Rugby teams.
With more and more kids dropping out of sport I can only imagine the harm that is being done at all levels in all sports in the Auckland lockdown area.

  I remember going along to Eden Park not so long ago to watch Auckland play Canterbury. This was once one of the marque games of the seasons. The day I was there there were no spectators at all on the southern side.
  Apart from that the Counties team is actually Counties-Manukau, where most of the current covid-19 cases are located. I’m surprised Taupo wants them down there.

My own situation is that I have my kids living overseas with their kids and it’s been providing excellent – I would even say essential – communication for us all. I am being made to understand by a plethora of “experts” that I will never get to go overseas again and nor will I have my family be able to visit me. At 70 this means pretty much For The Rest of My Life as far as I can see.

The question that really bugs me, is during that time, what was the long term plan? Lockdowns for 4-5 years?

The plan was extremely unwise in the first place. It boggles the mind.

Worse yet, I didn’t hear anyone speaking out against this entire charade from the beginning.

There needs to be consideration of ICUs again – ICU beds, staffing and ventilator levels.

I had forgotten how badly we compare with Australia. The number often quoted for NZ is 4.6 icu beds per 100,000 people (I think that is historic and it is slightly higher). Australia has 8.9.

The questions I posed yesterday were:

– how many empty ICU beds do we have in spring/summer?
– how much surge capacity?
– what levels are sustainable?
– what are the regional inequalities (*)?
– how much have beds/staff/ventilators been increased since the start of 2020?

(*) what do icu beds per 100,000 look like in Gisborne, Taranaki, West Coast and Southland?

  On the issue of ICU capacity, I keep pointing out that it is our decision to not have surplus unused most of the time “just in case”, and if we have a big natural disaster we will have to just roll with the consequences. We can’t “protect our ICU capacity” against a massive earthquake or urban-area volcanic eruption serious-injury toll with a hard lockdown.

The Government and MOH are getting more arrogant by the day.

Merck announced a new drug that effectively treats Covid – Molnupiravir. It reduces hospitlisations by 50% and in the stage III trial no one died who was given Molnupiravir. Most countries around the world are entering into negotiations to buy now the drug including Australia.

However, in New Zealand the MOH said “at this stage it has no plans to buy the drug” https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/nz-has-no-plans-order-promising-experimental-covid-19-drug. It will watch and see (i.e. do nothing) and one day might get around to talking to Medsafe and Pharmac.

So when people die from Covid and they didn’t have access to a treatment such as Molnupiravir who is at fault then?

  HCQ works. Ivermectin works. There are numerous helpful medications that can be incorporated in a multi-ingredient protocol. People have been condemned to death in huge numbers already by the denial of these treatments.
  
  Meanwhile the fact that putting people on orthodox ventilator treatment turned out to be harmful hasn’t resulted in any reassessment of early fatality-rate “orthodoxies” that have been entrenched and unrevised since.

    I agree that Ivermectin is a fantastic drug and one I have advocated here a number of times. However, for a lot of reasons it didn’t get “buy-in” from governments. Unfortunately, in NZ it was dismissed and will never be taken seriously.
    
    Molnupirvir is proven in the way governments like and it costs a lot so everyone is a winner! If we were to buy 30,000 doses at NZD$1,000 a dose (rough estimate of what the US paid) then that’s NZD30m. A drop in the bucket to the 1.5b a week a lockdown costs.
    
    If we buy this plus aggressive vaccines then we can re-open on 1 December with no restrictions. From a medical point of view there is no reason not to have Molnupirvir in the tool box.

      That’s funny Doc, the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh has just declared itself Covid free. They have two distinct differences from NZ – Their population is around 5% vexed, and they use Ivermectin very widely, in fact had a mass distribution of that plus Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, Zinc, plus an antibiotic, doxycycline (I think).
      
      And just to compare, next door state Kerala is going down the tax route, has 25% vaxxed fully (2 shot) and over 60% with 1 dose. Has 130K plus cases.
      
      Which approach do you think at least SOUNDS more effective ?
      
      Just maybe you should open your mind a touch, and not take what Big Pharma wants so directly. The information is available if you get rid of the blinkers.

I can’t believe how the govt are pushing the vaccine as some kind of magic cure that will save us all from lockdowns. And what’s more, it is so pervasive that a lot of the general public believe it without question. They’ve promoted it as an either/or situation – either you get vaccinated or we’ll have more lockdowns. That this will somehow protect us. Those of us bothering to research on the internet know it will not. The vaccine will not stop you catching the virus or passing it on – ie, it will not stop case numbers expanding.

Jacinda yesterday hinted about other medical solutions that aren’t ready yet. Well they better get on top of it. Because vaccination is not an answer.

  I have said before that the Government should not mandate its use other than for international travel. But worryingly they are in ‘discussions’ with the hospitality sector. I think we will find that by December a majority of bars and restaurants require them for entry.
  
  Good that they have said that they will prohibit supermarkets from using them. Yesterday Judith Collins said she would support unvaccinated people being banned from supermarkets. How odd.

    JC Statement 1: Businesses should be able to bar the unvaccinated once it’s widely available. (Vaccination is a misleading term because this vax doesn’t stop you giving it or getting it. So bans are ok on the basis of health and safety? Then what about banning people with certain criminal convictions? Shouldn’t criminal convictions be on the health passport. The terrorist was allowed to enter the supermarket and fly on a plane to Samoa and stab multiple people at the shops without disclosing his clearly stated criminal convictions, surely this is more dangerous than the healthy unvaxxed? If not why not. What about hate speech crimes this could be dangerous – Should these be on the vax passport so we can ban people from entering the store.
    Statement 2. Businesses should be able to incentivise people to vaccinate with a bonus. (Weird. Can bosses incentivise you to take other new technology medications which includes death as a rare side effect for the good of the company? What about anti depression tablets – can your boss incentivise you to take them. This affects your performance and other staff.)
    3. But opposes businesses being able to fire people who are unvaxxed. (So you can ban people from entering your store without vaccination but the staff in your store may be unvaxxed?)
    I won’t be asking staff about their personal medical choices. I encourage them to stay home if they’re sick. I respect their personal space, personal choices and privacy.
    
    Stop the unvaxxed entering shops if you will, but then how will the vaxxed explain it when they are still regularly becoming infected.

Did anyone see the AM show panel this morning, it was Des Gorman, Hendy and some immunologist. Bridge asked Hendy if it was going to be really bad and we’d never get back to normal life ever again, would have to wear masks etc for the rest of our lives? Hendy basically said ‘yes, for a long time.’

Des was hilarious, he just rolled his eyes on tv at Hendy’s response as if to say ‘what a d**k’ and just slammed him with a very logical explanation that we would have to learn to live with covid, like we do with all other illnesses and weigh up the risks. It was pure gold. Des is not afraid of anyone! Go Des!!

Chief White House medical adviser Anthony Fauci said on Sunday that it was “too soon to tell” whether people should abstain from meeting for Christmas this year amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Fauci told CBS “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan that it was “just too soon to tell” if Americans would need to curb the size and scope of their holiday celebrations as was recommended last year.

“We’ve just got to concentrate on continuing to get those numbers down and not try to jump ahead by weeks or months and say what we’re going to do at a particular time,” Fauci said.

  I dont think you will be in the target group there Maggie. The vaccine passports overseas have worked to make the young people get the vaccine who havent bothered. Especially in Ireland. Fear of missing out is massive with young people. 18 – 24 year olds have low uptake. If they cant go to gigs and festivals it will surely work. For the young people I know, kids of friends etc, going to the festival is the highlight of their summer.

  I think the point is Maggy that festivals are something that Jacinda’s demographic enjoy and which she attends. So those sort of things need to be looked after. Enlightened self interest so to speak.

Another right – the right to peaceful protest – is trashed by this sorry excuse for a Government and their brownshirted Police Commissioner.

I hope this serves as a wake-up call to Kiwis but am not holding my breath

I see the police are charging Brian Tamaki for that rally. Hope they are also charging whoever organised that gang tangi procession as well. Can’t have the gang just getting a ‘reminder’ of the rules from the police for a similar infraction.

Or is this a similar situation to the Wiles swimming episode? Depends who you are.

I thought that yesterday the government would move Auckland into L2, and everyone else to L1.

It has been in a brutal lockdown for about eight weeks so far for Aucklanders. Surely we must be near the end of the “hard and fast” lockdown? Also, the government was saying that the elimination strategy was being abandoned. In this case, I thought that there would be no more need for levels 4 or 3. What would be the point?

Instead of moving down levels, Cindy announced that L3 would stay, but you were allowed to go on a picnic. To me, this is simply surreal. You have to hand it to her. How does she come up with this stuff? It would be comedy gold, if the country wasn’t going bankrupt. Next it will be – we are staying L3, but you can pretend to be a giraffe, or perhaps an tiger, in your front garden! Roar!

Dr Bloomfield says this L3 with picnics could continue another 8 weeks more. This is incredibly brutal for Aucklanders. Why are they doing this? It wasn’t explained.

New Zealanders don’t seem to mind. I find this bizarre. A bunch of bureaucrats have stolen eighteen months of our lives, and are now locking us away for the best part of four months for no apparent reason whatsoever.

I found everything totally strange in the latest Nuremburg Rally, essentially from the beginning to end.

There were no dates, thresholds or targets mentioned. Virtually every other country in the world is either finished, or almost finished, with this nasty flu restrictions. In New Zealand, it is planned that these restrictions continue – forever!

Still, no-one complained. No-one asked for additional information. Everyone seems happy with this state of affairs.

Someone is insane. Either I’m insane (it’s quite likely), or the rest of the people in the country are nuts. None of this makes any sense at all.

Where was the roadmap? What is the plan? Where is the exit strategy?

Why the F do those living on Waiheke think they are so special ?

They are in the Auckland region but now want to stop Aucklander’s visiting the island under the new restrictions. Why shouldn’t Aucklanders be similarly prevented from visiting Omaha, Warkworth, Muriwai and any of the other areas that we are now permitted to visit?

If they feel so entitled to be separate from Auckland, then F*** them – no more of my dollar spend on their cafes vineyards or wine. If they don’t want us now, then they can whistle for my custom later

He has appeared in Court charged with breaking lockdown rules…and kicking a policewoman in the face.

The man has been granted name-suppression.

Bet it’s not say….. ‘Smith’ or ‘Jones’

Just heard Don Braid of Mainfreight and Chris Quinn from Foodstuffs on HDPA Drive show at 4pm saying they have been several times to the government to ask if they can use rapid antigen testing to monitor staff and keep covid from running rampant in their workforce.

Been told multiple times ‘NO’ and Ardern’s government ministers shrugging their shoulders and saying it’s the MOH’s department. Then Ashley Bloomfield’s department stonewalling a testing method that is used worldwide by businesses and has been in Australia for quite a while. RIDICULOUS bureaucracy and buck passing. No wonder so many people fear for NZ with this sort of crap going down.

Unbelievable telling these guys, Braid, head of one of the most successful listed NZ companies of recent times, (Mainfreight shares 40% average annual return over the past 5 years) that he can’t do something his company is doing in many other countries. Ardern and Robertson should be going and asking these guys what they would do, instead of the CAN’T DO attitude they have running through their administration.
