Covid statistic for the day: In December, there were more hospitalisations in the UK from vaccinated people, than non-vaccinated.

    This is perfect. To organize car safety / road toll solely on the wearing of safety belts is the same to organize and plan society around the jaxx to fight the ro.
    
    Well at least safety belts work. But there is the speed limit, safer designed roads, no drink driving, air bags, better car design, driver education etc etc. With the corona its just the single focus of the badly failing jaxx. Got the third dose yet? And the booster?
    
    Planning society around the jaxx is exactly like wearing a safety belt as you crash through a fence down the side of a hill at 120 km.

        Nah Nah, sadly the analogies here are not quite apt. Seatbelts and all the other technologies like air bags are only relevant when you are involved on an accident. In the medical correlate, they are like having good personal health, a good health system, good hygiene and education.
        
        Sadly all analogies break down somewhere, but trying to find a correlate for a clayton’s vaccine, that only works for 3-6 months, only leads me down a track to a case for misrepresentation of a product that should have lasted years, and quite frankly is not fit for purpose. If it were a fridge then it would have been recalled long ago.
        
        Boosters? Well it seems be have some bridge salesmen, very adept at changing the lingo to suit their pitch. Gawd, they’ve even got the dictionaries to change their definitions. How crazy is that?

      I am anything but a ‘branch Covidian’. I think the vaccine has been oversold, that certain side effects have been covered up and that the vaccine mandates are an utter travesty. However, an error of statistical reasoning is being committed here. It’s not actually a case of mistaking correlation for causation. Rather, it’s something called the ‘baseline fallacy’. Assume for a moment that 80% of adults are vaccinated, that the base rate of hospitalisation is 10%, and that being vaccinated reduces that to 5%. That means that 100 in every thousand unvaccinated cases will end up in hospital compared with one in every 50 vaccinated cases. But out of 1,000 people, 800 are vaccinated, 40 of whom (5%) will, on average, be hospitalised. Of the other 200 unvaccinated cases, 20 (10%) will be hospitalised. So in this scenario, twice as many vaccinated as unvaccinated cases get hospitalised, even though the vaccine halves the risk of hospitalisation.

        I’m not disagreeing with you, but the statistical gymnastics around all aspects of covid give me headaches.
        But based on what you are saying, the jab is a treatment, not a vaccine. It would be more honest if our government and media called it what it is. That would be a start. But so many lies and deliberate distortions of data have been promoted to maintain a narrative. No wonder there is such an extreme loss of trust in our institutions.

        The numbers don’t have accurate meaning, given how long they have been ‘measured’ And the rapid changes in circumstances. Last years numbers are no longer relevant. Ask for the latest supporting peer reviewed literature, if anyone starts quoting numbers.

        Thanks for doing the basic maths. As amply demonstrated you can see how futile it is to explain very simple arithmetic to people despite them proclaiming incessantly how they are researching and following data. Faced with this basic information they immediately stray off into but everything is lies as if it has any relevance. Then 5 minutes later will repeat the same misinformation.       Ok. I guess where Covid has been running rampant there will be a lot of natural immunity
      amongst the surviving unvaxxed. So perhaps it is just indicating that naturally acquired immunity is better than vaccination.
      
      Doesn’t mean I would want to take my chances with COVID though.

        Delta and the vaccine provide very little protection against Omicron, but Omicron provides considerable protection against Delta, moreso than the vaccine.

        It could mean all sorts of things.
        
        Unfortunately the stats are not being gathered to be able to make a whole lot of judgements (eg. impact of obesity or Vit D levels).
        
        Unfortunately too, a lot of stuff that is presented as statistics is also just modelling output. For example the early data that says that a booster is effective against Omicron is based on modelling. Omicron had not been around long enough to be able to have actually tested the booster. It was based on modelling – not real data.
        
        As for not taking your chances, it’s not really a choice. You will face the Sars-Cov-2 virus. You will be infected. The question is how your body reacts.

    I suspect that the vaccinated are “more” likely to catch Omicron because the reporting is coming from countries more likely to be vaccinated, and probably feeling immune with their vaccine passports, and then indulging in “risky behavior” (gosh I remember when “Risky behaviour” was have unprotected sex in the 90’s).
    
    There is pretty conclusive evidence that omicron is far less dangerous than previous versions, and some evidence to suggest vaccines help reduce that risk further. (I’m not wholely convinced)

      This keeps coming up, but you should note that the “risky behaviour” explanation is pure speculation and based on anything but “intuition”.
      
      It may be correct, but until someone works out how to provide some sort of confirmation or the reverse, it is useless as an explanation.
      
      Just as likely is the immune system suppression by the vaccine idea, and that at least has some theoretical basis behind it.
      
      Third option is that the data is inadequate for the purpose as the “unvaccinated” cohort contains a significant number of naturally immune people who have recovered from a previous bout of Covid. But because the data is inadequate, we don’t even know the prevalence of naturally immune people in either the vaccinated or unvaccinated populations.
      
      I tend to favour the vaccine failure explanation if for no other reason than the fact that there appears to be little to no effort to find out why the vaccinated are more vulnerable and because the same “suspects” keep trotting out the unsupportable explanations like “risky behaviour”. If the explanation would make the pro-vaccination promoters look good, they would most certainly be looking into it and finding the answers to support themselves.

        Prior to the vaccine “Risky behaviour” was suggested to be mass gatherings or multiply contacts outside your bubble, so called super spreader events.
        
        Logic suggests that the more individual contacts you have (indoors) the more likely you are to encounter the virus
        
        People who believe a vaccine passports wield some magic protective power were likely to condemn such reckless behavior a year ago, are now likely to participate in such behavior as long as they have their protective totems.
        
        Given the well documented level of vaccine failure with Delta (data which caused the PM to terminate a press conference and run away to the loo) and now also with Omicron pretty much everything the government is doing is pure placebo.
        
        Vaccines are failing simple because the variants are mutating out of the range of the limited vaccines.

    To me that makes a lot of sense – the “vaxxed” are allowed more liberties and freedoms and can congregate in bigger numbers, so the risk of spread is greater. Plus, if it really is the case that “vaxxed” people are less likely to have symptoms when they catch it, it becomes even more likely they’ll pass it on to someone else – and we know that being jabbed doesn’t prevent you from catching it.
    
    The reality is that the unvaxxed are at greater risk from the vaxxed, rather than the other way round – if you’re not vaxxed and you catch it, you’re more likely to have symptoms and isolate. Simples.

  I didn’t think I would need to do this again. If you were saying that the RATE of hospitalisation for the vaccinated was higher than for the unvaccinated that would be startling.
  
  But the rate of hospitalisations for the unvaccinated is eight times that of the vaccinated. And for those in critical care on ventilators it is 60 times that of the vaccinated.
  
  Why do you think that there are so few elderly people in hospital in the UK any longer, say in the 80 plus group? Because close to 100 percent of them are vaccinated.

    We have now had two years of the vulnerable and the elderly being affected by covid.
    Has much/most of the ‘low hanging’ fruit been picked off.
    If we take 80% of the covid deaths as elderly in the UK that would mean 120,000 no longer available for the virus.
    How much do we need to allow for this factor when assessing the benefits of vaccination.
    If the benefit of vaccination is the reduction of serious covid are they the best way to attack the problem.
    Is it time to concentrate research on medication that lessens the impact once you are infected.

      And as per Bojo, his latest statement indicates 60 to 70% of those in hospital are vaccinated. It is so hard to get reliable data these days. Other than all cause mortality, it is next to impossible to know the truth.

    I’ve never said that the vaccinated are going to die, not sure who you’re referring to, though I’d be concerned about the data suggesting that the jab may be having a negative effect on the innate immune system. But re hospitalisations, jabbed v unjabbed.
    
    Boris Johnson is now walking back his claims of 2 weeks ago that unjabbed were making up 90% of the hospitalisations.
    
    Put aside the fact that it was revealed that more than a third of ALL hospitalisations were not there for covid, they were there for other reasons and tested positive while in hospital.
    Also put aside the fact that vaccination status is open to misinterpretation depending who is crunching the numbers and where you are in the world. It’s a data clusterfuck.
    One jab is not vaccinated? Or is it two jabs are not vaccinated until 2 weeks after the second jab? Or is it unvaccinated if you haven’t had your booster? Or is it fully vaccinated from the date you downloaded your vax pass?
    
    Anyway, Boris lied about the numbers in hospital being unjabbed. Here he is on the BBC a couple of days ago stating clearly re hospitalisations:

    It looks as though the jab reduces symptoms and death. For a while. Then you need multiple boosters. We have no idea of the long term effects of boosters. If they are degrading innate immunity what problems will that cause in the future, say, during NZ winter?
    Everything about this thing is experimental and has been from the beginning. Nobody should ever feel compelled or coerced into taking part in this experiment. That is my primary objection. If I was 80 and diabetic or obese I might think about taking it.

      A couple of relevant counter-points:
      
      1. The vaccinated are going to die. The unvaccinated are going to die. We’re all going to die. Something’s going to get you, and the statistical probability that it will be any of the Covid variants that kills you is unfathomably low. I make the point not to be pedantic but to try and inject some perspective into the actual threat from this thing.
      
      2. Nobody who has had 1, 2, 3 or more Pfizer jabs is vaccinated. Not one. They’ve taken a number of experimental concoctions that have singular failed to do the job of a vaccine; therefore it is not a vaccine. I very much doubt any of the others are either, but I don’t know enough about them to comment with confidence.

      The only way to determine who is telling the truth and/or allowing the truth to be disseminated in 2021 is if they are breathlessly described along the lines of “neo-Nazis, white supremacists, white nationalists, the alt-right,” and usually anti-Semitic as well.
      
      These epithets are just code phrases that implicitly say “don’t listen to these people, because if you do, there is a real danger (for us) that what we are telling you and how we want you to perceive the world in the service of our interests will quickly be seen as non-representative of reality.”

Statistical analysis showing all cause mortality rising, All cause mortality is the gold standard for statistical analysis, it can’t be fudged as easily as covid data can and is.

  It isn’t surprising at all. It’s the harvesting effect.
  
  CV19 is predominately an end of life disease that time shifts deaths by a few months. Very few people are killed by CV19 itself. Almost all have serious comorbidities (average in USA for a “CV19 death” is 4 comorbidities and only 5% of CV19-related deaths list no other causes).
  
  All the countries that practiced more strict lockdown, isolation and handwashing etc dodged the grim reaper for a few months longer in 2020, then he had a bumper crop in 2021.

    A friend of mine contracted terminal cancer a few years ago. He knew within a year he’d be dead, but he still went ahead with chemo to give himself a few more months.
    Chemo is a nasty business & I wondered to myself at the time why he went ahead with the treatment.
    Of course I wasn’t him and a few more months was precious to him.
    He loved cooking.
    We went round to his house and he cooked dinner for us all about a week before he died. It was a struggle for him & he had to sit down a few times, but it brought to a close a fifty year friendship the way he would have liked.
    A number of elderly New Zealanders had their lives cut short by covid-19. Maybe by only a few months, maybe by years. If they’re not of a mind to go at that time one should extend them human respect.

      Sure, it is a personal choice. It comes down to what is a “good deal” for each individual.
      
      Certainly some people have had their lives shortened by CV19 (typically by not much). But many more have had their quality of life massively reduced by the impacts of lockdowns.
      
      Imagine if your cook friend had not been allowed to have his friends to cook them a meal for the last two months of his life (to keep him “safe”).
      
      Would your cook friend have traded two months of no friends around for staying alive an extra week longer than he did?
      
      I obviously do not know your friend or his mindset, but I expect he’d trade that extra week of life for an opportunity to have his friends around.
      
      There’s much more to this than just “keeping people safe”.

      A friend of mine has a particular terminal cancer that he could do chemo to extend his life by a few months. He’s chosen to go out naturally. He’s opted for quality over quantity. Each to their own. It is right for people to have options where they can choose the way things go. Mandates are never the answer.

    Might explain some, but most certainly this is not correct for most of the excess. The excess is significant in the 20-50 year age brackets, and these people are not much affected by Covid though certainly some, especially those with notable comorbidities, can die from Covid, it isn’t a large scale cause of mortality. So something else is at work.
    
    I will need to find the link, but I read one comment suggesting that there is a big increase in deaths in that 20-50 group from heart and blood issues (blood clots, strokes, etc), and that would be a serious problem to explain without involving the vaccinations.

Overreaction to covid kills people. Many more will die because of this insane desire to jab everyone. The policies and the vaccines will kill very many innocent people. How many will it save?       My Swedish friend said that sure they had no lockdowns but there were guidelines and people were pretty keen to follow them.
      
      Her own parents, in avoiding crowds, and indoor gatherings etc managed to avoid covid for a year. They caught it in the waiting room when they went for their vax. Delta. Recovered just fine, late 70s.

    I think they’re theorizing it came from a wild mouse population in Africa. Why mice? I don’t know, because Africa has heaps of furry beasties that would do the trick.

        Mice don’t naturally have a receptor that is that similar to the human ACE2 one, but there is a breed of laboratory mice specially bred for experiments that has the actual human ACE2 receptor expressed via genetic engineering of the mouse genome.
        
        Those are the animals that the lab origin hypothesis claims were used to “serial passage” the original Covid virus (which ever one it was) to forcefully evolve it to become more infectious for humans. They were certainly present in the Wuhan lab, and proposals submitted by EcoHealth to use such mouse in that way were given to the US funding provider.
        
        There is also the possibility that a SA lab was experimenting with Covid and forced mutations on a variant that escaped the lab. Bit hard to know a lot about how Omicron emerged, except that it is most unusually different variant with a set of mutations that at least seem to be extremely unlikely to have evolved purely by chance as it did.

    As far as we can tell, and the data available isn’t wonderful, a third (booster) shot appears to offer some limited additional benefit for a period of maybe 8-10 weeks, with the drawback that the first two weeks after such a shot has the recipient in a more vulnerable state and more likely to become infected in that short timeframe.
    
    The benefit applies against serious illness and hospitalisation mostly, not sure to what extent if any it protects against catching the virus.
    
    This does seem to support my guess that the vaccines actually don’t produce many antibodies against the exposed part of the viral S protein, but mostly produce them against interior or less exposed parts and so the vaccine antibodies are reasonably effective once one has been infected and one is producing the S protein in infected cells. As the vaccine antibodies have limited binding to the live virus, infection is not well prevented.

  The “omicron will go rampant in 18 days.. “ thing is a gross, misleading and totally mischievous interpretation of a statistical possibility.
  In reality the likelihood of an outbreak plotted on a daily basis into the future draws a simple though not symmetrical curve which peaks at 18 days. I don’t know the numbers but it may well be that it starts at day zero (today) with a likelihood of less than 1%, curves up to day 18 with a likelihood of 5% then curves back down to less than 1% at day 300.
  The area under the curve will be slightly less than 1
  Admission:- last studied statistics in 1971 so maybe the time dimension is playing with my memory.

  The same basic stats are coming out of South Africa too: the ratio of vaccinated people in hospital is greater than the ratio in the general population.
  
  There is, however a bit of smallprint here: vaccination is self selecting. Thus, it could still be that vaccination is correlated with those that are more likely to get sick anyway.
  
  For example, if the old and frail might be the most likely to get vaccinated AND still be the most likely to get sick.
  
  Regardless, what it certainly does show is that thepurported numbers of high efficacy (95%, or even 30%) are bullshit. If it does help with Omicron then:
  * It is way lower than the purported effects (which are mostly from mathematical models) and could be zero or negative.
  * It is most likely very short lived.
  * There is likely first a down-tick in immunity immediately after boosting (as has been observed with 1 and 2).

      Yup, and that’s a good thing.
      
      According to Baker, a quarter of all NZ gets infected with the flu virus every year. Of those only a small % “get the flu” – most “get a cold”, and an extremely tiny % end up in hospital due to the flu.
      
      Most of the CV19-positives in hospital in SA are incidental (ie. admitted to hospital for gunshots and babies, maybe asymptomatic, maybe a slight “cold” and then test positive).

  So, perhaps it is only showing that surviving unvaxxed people with natural immunity do better than vaxxed.

      And this is the critical issue. Covid has not been allowed to be treated. The “vaccine” is not a treatment. Two well regarded medicines have been pulled from the shelves, and deemed “unsafe”.
      
      If you got Covid and went to your doctor, they cannot prescribe any treatment for you, apart from, say, aspirin.
      
      This is one of the biggest disgraces in all of this and goes against all medical ethics. If you think I’m exaggerating, try and use your memory to think when, ever, Bloomfield or any other “expert” like Wiles or Baker recommended anything in terms of treatment.

Kept the other two tablets only to have them confiscated at AK International flying back in. Showed prescription from Doctor etc. Eager Beaver at the desk said I might sell them.         60 tablets for personal use.
        Always declare on the Customs form – it gets you to the front of the line.
        Once had 2 Customs officers, an Armed cop and a Drug dog waiting for me.
        Old Customs guy asked a few questions and I explained the situation (self employed, can’t get it in NZ anymore, legal without Rx overseas and allowed 60 tabs for personal use).
        He handed me over the younger Customs guy and before opening the bag, said “The package will be on top of the clothes. You won’t find anything else.”

While this was happening America made many odd policy decisions that made no sense. They agreed to pay enough to organisations like the WHO and the UN to subsidise other nations who paid almost nothing in comparison. They used their military almost like it was owned by the whole globe to fight wars they didn’t belong in, interfere in conflicts that had nothing to do with them, and subsidise other countries military expenses by stationing their forces all around the globe as some kind of world defence force while receiving no compensation. And they paid for all of this while racking up the most famous government debt in the world. Why? Well they didn’t do it because it was in the interests of American’s, did they? At the same time they put up no fight and introduced no laws to prevent China from taking the bulk of their manufacturing jobs off shore leaving millions of American’s unemployed. They said nothing while Alibaba ripped off all of America’s IP and sold their products to the globe for pennies on the dollar. More recently they savagely cut their military budget and began downsizing while China did the opposite. And recently Joe Biden’s son left his laptop in a repair store and the information on it was leaked, hundreds of emails and texts corroborated by third parties as authentic and also including video footage of Hunter engaging in sex acts while smoking crack. The media told everyone this was Russian disinformation. The deep state runs so deep they even had 20 former intelligence officers sign a letter to say it was so. Then, after the election they all began reporting on it accurately as the FBI had by then started a formal investigation. Think about how deep the rot is when 20 intelligence officers go on the record and lie to protect Biden. But the main thing that was on the laptop was hard evidence that Hunter Biden travels the world selling his fathers influence to the highest bidder, and that explains why America has been bending over for the rest of the world, and why all these politicians live so high above their means. So Trump was the big middle finger to all of that. They wanted to get rid of him by any means they could. They tried everything and in the end they rigged the election so they could get the stone out of their shoe and get back to selling their influence at the expense of everyday American’s. The people know it was rigged because it was the most blatant election steal in world history, you probably aren’t aware because the media just regurgitate the mainstream narrative that claims of fraud are baseless. They are not, you just need to stop accepting everything you hear at face value and try to understand that people who don’t have your best interests at heart are pulling the strings. The world is not a fairy tale where all the people in power are amazing humans, they aren’t. Positions of power attract the worst people, and on occasion some of the good ones. It’s just that the ones who lie cheat and steal end up on the top usually.

Its all you need really.

Why? Because lockdown is coming. Same deal as before. Omicron is resistant to 2 jabs. However studies show a booster offers solid protection. So a few months lockdown of Auckland after all of nz does 2 weeks level 4 to hold the Fort while giving Aoteroa the precious time to get their boosters.

  Being Maori, she sprinkles Maori words like cheap confetti, to the point of being absurd. Case in point, the Te Reo name for ‘the earth’ in a story about a satellite. Where will it all stop?
  What’s next? Te Reo names for Australia, the US, Joe Biden, and on and on? Thomas is a former staffer for National Ministers, and now in his writing, Red Radio chats, and other PR, seems to be a voice of the Labour Lite wing of National.

Remember Todd Barclay, who became National MP for Clutha Southland, probably the safest National seat in the country, after being a National Government staffer?

Barclay was a lobbyist for Philip Morris International before becoming an MP at 24.

National MP Chris Bishop, after being a staffer for the party, worked as a lobbyist for Philip Morris. According to Wikipedia, Bishop worked against the Naitonal Party’s plans to increase tobacco excise and introduce plain packaging.

“On the day of his selection as a candidate he announced that he supported both policies,” Wikipedia claims.

    Tennis Australia has now admitted that the Federal visa requirements re Covid affect the viability of the Australian Open. No surprises here. That is why TA mis-advised/mis-led the tennis players and ignored, inter alia, the letter the Federal Govt sent to TA on the visa requirements well in advance of the current imbroglio.
    
    I sympathize with Djokovic in respect of him having breached Australian visa regulations. Why? Because he would have relied on his team. I mean, at his level he would rely on the folk he is paying good money to look after him. And why shouldn’t he?
    
    His team should take responsiblity for this – not necessarily Djokovic himself. And his team obviously relied on TA, without having checked the visa requirements. Lesson learned re TA – follow the money. It’s a bit like Augusta inviting you, a Kiwi, to play in the Masters golf. It doesn’t mean that US immigration is gonna say – “Oh, sure, come on in. Augusta said so”.
    
    Bottom line is that from a legal/Constitutional aspect, the Oz Fed Govt controls the international border – not the states, nor TA. Had Djokovic been properly advised he would have realized that he would likely not be granted entry at the airport. Irrespective of TA’s invitation to compete and ‘exemption’.
    
    Someone in TA should be fired. Re-hired, then fired again.
    
    PS I haven’t watched tennis for over 15 years. Professionalism has destroyed it [and many other sports]. I also found the copulatory grunts and shrieks of the players [especially the women] deeply un-appealing. I’ve never seen Djokovic play, live or in cyber-space.

If the data coming out of the rest of the world continues then its going to be very hard to continue closed borders. Omicron seems around 95% less deadly than Delta which was already getting close to flu levels thanks to vaccines and treatments.
Ironically keeping Omicron out and letting Delta spread will put more NZers at risk of dying which is our current trajectory. A delta infection doesnt stop you catching Omicron but an Omicron infection gives you antibodies against Delta.
The risk is, and its a low one, that if we keep Omicron out and dont get that herd immunity that the next mutation could end up being more lethal and we have missed our window.
Its Summer, lets get on with it.

Maori talk of a Maori-owned and run supermarket chain raises the question of Maori companies operating free of company tax.

Maori are talking of being the third big operator if the Commerce Commission ends the effective supermarket duopoly of Countdown on one hand, and the Foodstuffs co-operatives on the other hand.

The link to the Stuff article is below, where the Maori move is reported second to a strange objection to a break-up from Countdown: the danger of eruption of one or more of the 53 volcanoes Auckland sits on.

Maori tribes are increasingly registering their companies as charities. Advantages of this include being free of company tax. The Seventh Day Adventist Church has done this for decades with its Sanitarium food company.

South Island tribe Ngai Tahu has more than 40 companies grouped under its group charity status. The businesses include farming, finance, fisheries, tourism, property development, quarrying, real estate, and vineyards.

It’s time tax-free status for charities was scrapped. The Salvation Army would lead any opposition to this, but why does it have profit? It’s not a business organisation.

  I’ve been thinking about the tax exempt status charities enjoy for a while now. I dealt with a well know private hospital group in Christchurch working on some construction projects. Very well run business but because they are a registered charity through their church links, no corporate tax. This obviously gives them a competitive advantage in this sector – not breaking any rules, they work within the system and do so extremely well.
  
  However, it’s clearly not the only example of a commercial enterprise running under a charity cloak. There are so many others out there that are dressed in charity but are just fully fledged commercial enterprises. Ngai Tahu (the most commercially minded Iwi of all I’d say), Sanitarium etc.
  
  I have no moral objection to charities being exempt from corporate tax but there is clearly some questionable behaviour in this sector. The problem is how to reform it without it being hostage to partisan beliefs? Most on here would say Greenpeace etc do not deserve charity status – green voters would argue otherwise. Others would argue the commercial concerns dressed in religious clothes like Sanitarium, Destiny Church etc aren’t really charity – those with strong christian faith would argue otherwise (although whether they’d argue in favour of a hindu or muslim charity would be interesting!). Maori running tax exempt supermarkets would generate the same level of debate – can already here the MSM calling anyone who questions this as being a racist!
  
  The problem is the sector clearly needs reform – but to do so would be a complete minefield of competing partisan interests. I seriously doubt we have the politicians with the integrity, independence and insight to lead such a reform.

  Being a charity though means that they cannot pay dividends, and must distribute any available profits according to some neutral criteria that are subject to challenge. Not always easy to establish a charity organisation that meets scrutiny, though I have little doubt that different rules would apply to an “approved” Maori charity.

    They can distribute to shareholders credits up to the amount of company tax they have paid. The shareholders can use these as offsets in calculating their personal income tax.
    
    Companies are at an unfair position compared with competitors that are charities. They pay tax on any profit, and promptly.
    
    Charities can decide how much, if any, cash, they distribute to their beneficiaries and when they distribute it.

  Because we’re such a small country with a very simple grid we would likely bounce back from a full grid down (it that ever happened) far faster than most places.
  
  What is problematic is restarting and resynchronising a grid after a complete grid failure. That is a huge challenge, especially in complex grids and those with large stations.
  
  If equipment gets damaged during the collapse (eg. transformers), then it can take a year – if not years – to replace those first.
  
  When I worked at Eskom (South African power utility), we sometimes discussed how we’d restart if it was needed. There were some rather sketchy plans that nobody was too confident in. Luckily that was never needed.
  
  Normally a grid restart is started with something small like an OCGT, then adding on other generation. That is hard in South Africa where the OCGTs are mainly in Cape Town and the main generators are in Mpumalanga (Transvaal) – 1700km away – making it very hard to synchronise.
  
  NZ is far simple. Likely our OCGTs or some of the hydros could restart and then adding to that is relatively easy.
  
  Still, best to be avoided.

    Mod, yup, an OCGT is basically a jet engine that spins a turbine (in this case a generator turbine) rather than spin the turbo fan of a plane to pump air and make it mode.
    
    Don’t be fooled by the “gas” in OCGT – most run on diesel.
    
    OCGTs are typically much smaller than most other generators and many are self-excited (ie. they can start generating power on their own). Most large generators are rid excited (ie. they need power from the grid to get started and then keep them synchonised).

I presume the NZ government will also be up for millions in compensation. Wasn’t that tour company a maori run outfit that was taking the people on to the island? Of course the NZ taxpayer will be left to pick up the bill, not the tour company. I guess the company were ‘all care, no responsibility.

    At some point we will have to let Omicron in. Supplying everyone in NZ with Vit D, Zinc and Ivermectin, (and a few other safe meds) to take for 1-2 months starting just prior to opening would only cost a few 10’s of millions and might cut deaths in half or more (as well as saving a huge amount of hospitalisations and sick days more than paying for the program).
    
    How incredibly incompetent (pretty much down to the level of being consciously evil) does the govt and health dept have to be not to do that? There is simply no downside.
    
    It could even be done as a private effort if a suitable organisation could take it on (eg ACT?), if there is some evil Big Pharma driven reason for why the govt can’t do it.

      If you are going to use the term and loosely attribute the quality to commenters, and given that it is the foundation of your compliant, you need to define ‘racism.’
      
      The literal definition I would give for ‘racism’ is “the belief that one is inherently inferior to another, solely on the basis of membership of a different racial group.” I would suggest that very, very few people satisfy this definition.
      
      The functional definition, used as a battering ram in political rhetoric to discredit and subvert social and political systems, is “the recognition that there are observable, general differences between racial groups, therefore behaviour will vary between groups, and therefore that such differences account for most of the quantifiable disparities across many outcomes.” I would suggest that any objective and reasonable person, who doesn’t have an ideological dogma to maintain, is ‘racist’ by this standard.
      
      To even posit the concept of a “racial group” is to necessarily accept that there are distinct groups that are different, and will therefore not have the same group outcomes due to these differences. The notion of a group calling themselves BLM seems to presuppose that they themselves see Blacks as a distinct racial group with different outcomes. Otherwise, they’d call themselves LM.

  It’s unlikely the legal outcome would have been the same if the race of the victim and guys that killed him while trying to detain him for what they though was a burglary were reveresed (or the same). Same with the George Floyd and Kimberly Potter verdicts.
  
  ‘Justice’ is no longer blind, it has been racialized.
  
  In any event the huge sentences handed out for these crimes where people did not set out with intention to kill anyone or even break the law – just did dumb ill-considered things in the heat of the moment is flat out wrong. Punishing stupidity not evil.

I see that the media are running stories on the fact that employers can’t find anyone to hire. They are calling it the “Great Resignation.” Well, DUH – it’s because of the mandates.

Looks like the vaccine trial for kids under 5 showed poor immune response. So they are starting again with all infants trialled with THREE vaccine shots 2 weeks apart.

Honestly this seems insane, especially with omicron in full flight. The weird thing is that their request to parents for volunteers got 1,000 parents on board in hours.

BTW my 2 year old granddaughter in Australia was diagnosed with omicron yesterday. And my son. My son is moderately sick. In bed. Think bad cold. Which is sad. I hope he gets better soon.

The 2 year old is running around. Why anyone would stick THREE shots of vaccine into a two year old God only knows.

Anyway the Pfizer setback means no vaccines for infants in New Zealand until at least the third quarter of 2022.

First, there should be no doubt that our national teaching of science, technology and mathematics (henceforth just “science”) delivers cruel results…

The issue is not about groups or individuals seeing themselves in the curriculum. It’s about the way our children are taught, and the knowledge and skills teachers bring into the classroom.

  I’ll not dissect the whole article.
  Science teaching to ethnic Maori firstly has to recognise that it takes intellect of a particular character to progress in mathematics. Some have, most don’t (including Pakeha.) Maori are a subset of the community and their IQ mean is 1 std deviation below the Pakeha. That reduces severely the numbers able to proceed.
  
  Add to that the cultural requirements that Polynesians cannot be seen to be above their betters. No matter how bright a Maori may be many pupils will not perform well in class if they have classmates above their station. I have taught in that situation. A chief’s son is expected to perform well. Woe betide another of lesser rank who answers a question that the other is unable to.
  We cannot equalise education. It is not a sausage factory where all goes into the chopper and an homogenous mixture emerges.

Australia has a huge outbreak of Omicron at the optimal time – in the middle of summer.

In New Zealand, the border opening has been delayed, such that our outbreak is much more likely to be in winter.

Why would you do this, when the deaths are likely to be much higher during winter?

I think that there is one main reason for this decision. Cindy’s wedding is in this summer. She doesn’t want her big day ruined, as she arranged for thousands of others.

I know Cindy likes to dress up in costumes. We had the Muslim outfit followed by the Polynesian tent. How should she dress for her wedding?

I’m not sure that the traditional white wedding dress is a good fit.

Personally, I think she could get married in an Angel of Death outfit. Much like her Muslim outfit, this would pay respect to those who will die, in this case due to the reopening delay.

While I’m discussing the Cindy celebrity business, I haven’t recently seen an article on daughter Neve. Keen readers of Stuff will know that Neve’s every step, and every birthday cake, is breathlessly recounted, in excruciating detail.

Personally, I looking forward to the article which details Neve’s vaccine jab. I assume that Cindy will lead by example, and Neve will be like a pin cushion, shot three or four times with Pfizer’s sweet zombie juice.

2022 is setting up to be a popcorn year.

  It’s far worse than that, all vaccinated NZers have rapidly diminishing vaccine effectiveness, and Omicron continues to evolve around vaccination. Aside from which we’re also all getting older and more vulnerable ~0.1% increase in risk per day; eg if 1000 kiwis would die today if we all caught it then it will be 1001 tomorrow. Delaying kills more people and does vastly more economic harm.

  The taxpayers are not getting value for money neither from the politicians nor the Public Service. It seems that they are now no longer able to carry out the subsidiary delegated executive functions. How do we get houses built? Who counsels out Ministers to keep them out of trouble?
  
  The Purpose of Govt has been ignored.
  Adding karakia to Maori deities, as is aleady happening in the Public Service, will bring further disaster.

I find it best to tear ‘Hot-X-Buns’ apart with your fingers & thumb.
Do this first, then pop them in the microwave for 9 seconds. This makes them beautifully tender in the middle.
Immediately place them on a wire-rack under the Oven Grill. Toast until done….making sure they don’t burn.
Remove and dollop with tons of Butter.
Then stick them back in the hot oven for a minute or so until Butter is partially melted. DEE LISH!!

COVID is academic until it affects you personally.

My son in Australia is infected, plus his whole family.

They are all moderately sick. The two year old is lethargic, crying and has a fever. And of course they are all isolated in their home. Of course they will recover and be fine. I have just been on video with them and, at least for them, Omicron is definitely more than a cold.

“A hospital consultant has told the Health Secretary he refused to be vaccinated because he has immunity from being “antibody” positive after exposure to the virus.

Steve James, a consultant anaesthetist at King’s College Hospital in London, who has worked in the ICU since early 2020 treating Covid patients, told Sajid Javid why he did not believe in vaccination.

The Health Secretary politely expressed his disagreement and urged the public to get boosted during his visit.

Mr James told the PA news agency he did not believe Covid-19 was causing “very significant problems” for young people, adding that his patients in the ICU had been “extremely overweight” with multiple other co-morbidities.”

The last paragraph is critical. Has anybody seen the government throw money into weight loss programmes for those who are most vulnerable? Didn’t think so.
