Remember just a few news cycles ago, the papers were breathlessly anouncing there were record high temperatures in Antarctica. Vostok had reached -15° and there was a map showing the whole of East Antarctica 40° above normal. Bright red of course. No doubt Maggy can link to it. Proof of global warming. They had extrapolated an area the size of Australia from one weather station. The non-alarmists pointed out there was a logical weather explanation, but they were just denialists, of course.
Well the satellite data for the month is in at Roy Spenser’s site. It was 0.03° above the baseline average. Lucky the press has moved on.

    Don’t you remember they changed it from global warming to climate change? There were too many incidents that bucked the warming narrative so they settled on climate change. Which is obviously hilarious as the climate has always bloody changed throughout the entire history of our planet.
    
    Brilliant marketing though when you think it through. Record heatwave? Climate change. Record cold spell? Climate change.
    
    Almost as good as the most appalling marketing phrase they use – the science is settled. Sometimes the agreed science can be so fundamentally understood that it is indeed settled, other times it is very slowly refined and improved, and other times still we see massive leaps in our understanding. I suspect climate change will be in the latter category whereby with more data we gain more understanding – it is by no means settled I would argue.
    
    I often imagine the climate change shills being those that would have objected to the likes of Galileo, Newton and Einstein challenging and changing our understanding of the universe.

    I thought all of “climate changing” (and its changing names) originated with Maggie Thatcher who was upset with the undependence of Middle East crises interrupting oil deliveries and miner strikes in Wales welching on coal, supplies, that she wanted to convert the UK to nuclear energy but was hampered by dirty waste. But as part of the argument science advisors said other energy sources are also “dirty” – polluting. So she said “Give me more research on that”. So science advisors found it profitable researching pollution, which then became an branch of science, a national industry and yet even a world wide “religion” – God help us!

  The ‘record heat’ of 18.4 degrees was recorded at a single weather station, the most northern in Antarctica. It was, and will be next time, the result of periodic conditions known as Foehn winds. The previous record was 18.0 degrees set 42 years ago.

The feeling I get is that the government has no idea specifically how they are going to run the new Maori-only health service.
We have now learned it is likely that Health NZ will manage the health of all New Zealanders, Maori and the rest, while the Maori Health Authority will commission health services for Maori only. “By Maori, for Maori” has changed to “Better only for Maori”.
This means Maori will receive what we receive plus their extra bit. This will include additional drugs from Pharmac.
Cystic Fibrosis is a disease that kills people around the age 30 to 40. Death can be prevented by a drug regime that costs $330,000 per year. Pharmac does not meet this cost.
My question is that if a Maori has Cystic Fibrosis then under the Maori-extra funding model would this not be a suitable drug to fund for this Maori patient?
How do you explain this to the loved ones of a non-Maori who dies because they cannot afford the $330,000 pa while a Maori with the same disease is kept alive?

  It must be horrible to be in that situation. But I’d really like to see some CBAs done by Pharmac to inform their decisions. Considering QALYs maybe it will be a good intervention.
  
  But we do need to make decisions based on more than the feelz which I’m guessing the MHA will use for its decision making.

I hope everyone has had a great Easter. Remember Easter is a holiday which comes from the idea of a “holy day”. It gives us time to spend with our families and also time to spend with our God. So I thank God for Easter. I thank God for Jesus who died on Good Friday and who rose again on Easter Sunday. This was the pivotal event that gave us the wonderful Western civilisation that we can enjoy. Based on everyone is equal in the sight of God. Based on everyone’s sins can be forgiven by God through Jesus paying the price for our sins. And based on Jesus rising again which shows us that this life is not the end and we can enjoy eternal life with God in the future.

This helps us to know that this life is not the only life. Even if this life is hard, we have the hope of a better life to come. So although one can be tempted to feel despair right now at the direction of our country and our utterly inept and radical leadership – we do not lose heart. We know that we have a better life to come. And we have the consolation of God being with us in this life.

And in this life we have the consolation of knowing that all things must pass. And there is an election next year. And we thank God for that. 🙂

  This helps us to know that this life is not the only life.
  
  So as I hurtle towards death, I have a few choices, it seems:
  
  1. Everlasting existence in hell (for we are all born sinners according to some of my ancestors)
  
  2. Everlasting existence in heavenly Paradise (according to the Church of JC of the LDS)
  
  or
  3. Some other life-form back on Earth (according to the reincarnationists)
  
  I still think I’ll opt for wait & see (or not see, as I suspect will be the case).

No doubt the news will soon be full of articles from family and associates saying how he was a good boy – his record will be glossed over of course = apart from to say he had turned his life around.

      If has was on home detention, he should have been at home!
      
      Home detention is both a punitive and rehabilitation sentence. It requires an offender to remain at a suitable and approved residence at all times and be monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
      
      Offenders on home detention must also complete programmes designed to address the causes of their offending.
      
      I’m guessing he didn’t address his offending…

    “According to the Taranaki Daily News, police officers spotted Price driving and signaled for him to stop in November 2020.
    
    He accelerated heavily into the oncoming traffic, and along a residential road “where schoolchildren were forced to take evasive action to avoid being hit by you”, the judge said.
    
    The pursuit was abandoned, but once police did find Price, he had 2.5 grams of methamphetamine on him, a metal knuckleduster in his car, and blood tests taken showed he had meth and cannabis in his system.”

    In fact the only time I have run foul of the Police was in 1963 when the local Sergeant caught 4 of us with a few flagons down at the river.
    
    Turns out they were looking for someone else after a rape accusation and had more important things to worry about. We were sent on our way after some very stern words.

        I used to do the occasional 10 PM To 6 AM “ride alongs” with two cops in East Los Angeles. When we found underage drinkers we would confiscate the booze and send the kids on their way. Too much paperwork if you took them in. The booze was discretely disposed of.

      Way way back in my Uni days me and an mate were strolling homewards at some ungodly hour and we decided – alcohol had featured, natch – that it would be a good idea to do some nude dead anting in the middle of the not-quite-central-City street quite close to our flat.
      
      A passing cop car stopped.
      
      We were lectured, told that ‘if mine was that small I’d not show it in public’ and just told to a) dress and b) be off the streets by the time he made his return journey from where he was going.
      
      I wonder i9f Liverpool’s superb FA Cup Semifinal win would be grounds for me to perp some similar act at 9.45am this fine Easter Monday….?

  So far there appear to be no reports of this person either being armed at all or threatening police officers directly. The Police have stated only that he drove into their car. This caution is quite untypical of Police media in cases where weapons are involved

    If you bothered to look up legal precedent, the y can shoot if the officer was acting in defence and that his actions were proportionate to the threat of death or injury posed by the offender. The courts have already decided a car is a deadly weapon.
    In most cases where police pull up people at night, the park right in front to stop the person driving away. They also go down the passenger side to talk to the vehicle occupants so other motorists can’t hit them.
    So unless you have evidence that hasn’t been published for the media, I would say there would have been a cop by their car and another cop on the passenger side of the offenders car. The ramming would have been high speed so a real danger to people outside the car
    If that is the actual circumstances, then the police were justified in shooting.

    Ramming a vehicle into others deliberately should be seen as assault with a deadly weapon in that context. Police pulled over one car, so having someone come at you at speed from another car, is done with malice and in an attempt to do harm.
    If you do this to the police especially, then they should be able to respond with deadly force.
    Read up on the past behaviours of this person, and a dirt nap is the best thing for him 100%.

      A third of the Asians in NZ are Chinese, another third Indian. And then there’s SE Asian, West Asian.
      A present there’s eight MPs from Asia, as far as I can tell.
      There are big numbers of immigrants whose specific ethnicity are not necessarily understood. However as long as they have PR they can’t be ignored because they have a vote. Unlike large numbers of NZers living in Australia who have no representation.

They want to make money and educate their children at either private schools or one of the few excellent public schools. Many have zero interest in New Zealand politics and don’t vote.       Quite so…my son was a member of a chess club – the only PI there – before girls became more interesting than either chess or fishing with Dad.
      
      The majority of the club members – 95% – were Asian. I recall my son having a hard job beating a 6 year old Chinese girl.
      
      I used to stay and read a book while the games were on. I remember talking to one Chinese mother who didn’t much like Auckland. I told her there was a lot of New Zealand outside Auckland. Her reply: “But here are best schools…I must stay in Auckland until my son is at university”.

Next door neighbour said …”He had problems with his mental health but was unable to get the help he needed” “The boarding house would take anyone, including those who would otherwise be unhoused or had substance abuse problems,” Lisa said.

This seems unethical to me. If you are the victim of an accident does your private life become public? Are your neighbours are allowed to speculate and publish the details of your mental health? Why is his mental health anyone’s business and how is the neighbour qualified to speculate? In a country that won’t publish the scientific details of vaccine or covid deaths and won’t publish the details of criminals until they are tried why are crime or accident victims lives subject to such scrutiny. I might wear a medic alert badge that says in case of accident you don’t have the right to publish my personal life story.

Some brief thoughts on co-governance:

1. The fact that this has largely been sprung on New Zealanders by this Labour Government, rather than expansively debated, reveals much about Labour’s motive and their belief in the likely reaction of the majority of NZers.

They know we won’t like it so have introduced it with stealth and speed.

2. No case has been made, that I’ve seen, that the problem that some Maori have life outcomes poorer that other Maori or some other NZers will be solved by co-governance.

The silence has been deafening around this point.

All I’ve heard to date is the odd slogan. “By Maori, for Maori….”, “What’s good for Maori is good for NZ…” etc.

NZers deserve to hear from co-governance proponents EXACTLY how it will lead to better outcomes for under-performing Maori.

3. With regard to the Maori Health Authority and other “By Maori, For Maori” initiatives – what will success look like?

Last week I read that, while vast, vast sums of taxpayer money will be poured into the MHA, NZers are to expect no benefits to be enjoyed for the first 5 years.

This seems rather strange. Why not? Are there no quick wins that could be delivered within this timeframe? At all?

Secondly, if, for example, over time the MHA delivers 10% better outcomes at the same cost of outcomes delivered under the existing system I will assume that will be triumphed as a success.

But how about the following situations:

10% better outcomes at twice the cost?
50% better outcomes at five times the cost?
50% worse outcomes at 90% of the cost?
20% worse outcomes at the same cost?

Will these situations be regarded as successes or failures?

One of the big questions in my mind is what is the line below which the results fall the MHA will be regarded as a failure, scrapped and everything folded back into the current system?

Or are we about to enter a new world where it won’t matter what the actual results are and at what cost they have been delivered – it will always be regarded as a success?

Are we about to see a rerun of most other government programmes in that it won’t matter how absolutely dire the results are or how eye-wateringly expensive the scheme is when this is pointed out all we will get back is “Oh we’ve been underfunded and we need more money” or “Oh we just need more time and the results will come….”

Once, just once, I’d like to see Mahuta, Willie Jackson, Ardern or Robertson etc say “If we fail to deliver x outcomes, by y time, at or below z cost then this will have been a failure and I’ll immediately resign and leave others to scrap this programme and roll back to how we were….”

4. I argue that there is no causal relationship between political power and improved community outcomes.

The backers of co-governance need to make the case for this or their claims for a better future turn to dust.

Here in New Zealand and around the world Chinese, Japanese, Korean communities thrive in Western countries will little or no political representation – earning incomes significantly greater than whites and others in those communities. Why is this?

To their shame, I have not once seen any members of our news media raise this point. They seem to believe that as soon as some elite Maori are running this or that show then magically nirvana will be delivered.

It’s a lie.

5. With respect to 3 Waters, again we are being asked to believe that Maori involvement as pushed by Mahuta will magically lead to improved outcomes and, Mahuta incongrously claims, it will require 6-8,000 new jobs but will magically save NZers money.

Exactly how NZers will save money while simultaneously paying for 6-8,000 new positions she doesn’t explain.

If, as it appears to be claimed, Maori are possessors of a vast, untapped skill and knowledge of water storage and reticulation systems – then why aren’t they in the market today and commending vast sums for this skill and knowledge?

A cheap point that I’ve made before, but I’ll make it again – pray where did Maori acquire this vast skill and knowledge? Did they manage water storage and reticulation well in their cities?

6. I’ve seen a number of commentators lately say along the lines of “If NZ doesn’t commit to co-governance then Maori will be all together shut out of all decision-making bodies impacting on Maori futures….”

Absolute bullshit. Another big lie.

Maori have exactly the same opportunities as the rest of us to stand and be elected on school boards, sports committees, local boards, city or district councils, central government and/or any other body one can think of.

Those who gloss over this point and claim Maori are being denied representation under current arrangements should be ashamed of themselves – and spits on the legacy of Maori and any other NZer who has got off their arse and stood for elected positions and delivered on behalf of the whole community for the last two centuries.

7. Looking particularly at the data coming our of the States these last 50 years I am absolutely confident that should co-governance go ahead in any substantial form we will look back in 20, 30, 40 years time and see that a small slice of Maori elite will have become spectacularly wealthy but for the great majority of Maori it will have been a non-event – their lives will be largely unchanged. Some Maori will still be lounging at the bottom of our life outcome measures.

New Zealand will have changed though – the bitterness and dismay New Zealanders of all backgrounds, including non-elite Maori, will feel at seeing the Maori elite enriching themselves not because of their contributions or accomplishments, no, just because they are Maori – will be wide and deep.

8. No co-governance proponent can or will paint a detailed picture of where this will all lead.

They haven’t a clue themselves. No one can predict where this will all end up – but Mahuta, Ardern, Jackson etc are asking us to trust that they know what they’re doing.

What have they done to date to earn this trust? Since 2017, and the promises made then by them, have they delivered in sufficient amounts to deserve our trust from this point?

I know my view.

    Lamb kebabs, even Thai Money Bags. Lots of dance groups in traditional costumes. Lion/Dragon thing at the end. Out the back a Chinese Orchestra with chinese instruments.

They do 5-minute birds counts, at each of 175 evenly spaced stations, in the beech forest.
Mohua/yellowhead numbers may now be in excess of 2000 birds, up from a low of 14 birds 24 years ago.
Eight species are increasing, a further six remaining stable and two, silver eye and long-tailed cuckoo, have decreased.
In contrast, introduced species have declined, pushed out by the flourishing indigenous populations.
Predator control is by traps along the valley floor and 1080 aerial drops during forest seeding.
The regular use of 1080 keeps rats, stoats and possum levels low.

In Bangkok if there’s an accident and an ambulance isn’t quickly organised from a hospital to pick up the injured a rescue team will do the business and take them to a hospital close by who pays for the business.
Each rescue team has their own patch.
Problems continually arise when one crew poaches victims from some other crew’s patch.

It’s probably been 4 0r 5 years since we last went to an Easter Show.
I only ever go for the Candy Floss anyway.
Last time, my partner tried to talk me into having a go on the ‘Giant-Sling-Shot’. It was only when I drew his attention to the state of the so called ‘Ride Attendants’, that I was able to change his mind.

Honestly, you could tell just by looking at them, it would be a miracle if there was a brain between the pair. And they both seemed so high on something, neither would have given a flying f**k if something went wrong anyway!

So it came as no surprise to me to read about the near tragedy at the ‘Christchurch Carnival’ over the weekend….

  A carnival sprung up on some bare land next to our housing development in Bangkok. Our house (the one with no hot water) is on a cul de sac at the end of which is a wall and the Wall of Death was set up on the other side.
  We couldn’t resist the allure of ear splitting noise so we went to watch guys fly around the 6m walls first on dirt bikes and them in a Ute. The whole structure shook, but I was the only one who seemed to care.
