It’s ironic that the Labour Party is celebrating how fast our economy has recovered just hours before the highest level of inflation for more than 30 years is announced.

  Apropo co-governance and Maori land. For the young ones here back in the 70s the local iwi complained that Raglan golf course was built on iwi land. The Government of the day took the golf course land off the golf club. It was a particularly well cared for golf course as most are. With a few years it had reverted to gorse and scrub.
  And that folks is the difference between land cared for by Maori and land cared for by Non-Maori.

    What I have noticed is that land that is in multiple ownership where there is no clear benefit of input to those who would be industrious the land is left to degrade.
    You can observe this outside of Moari land in some family trusts, as well as coucil reserves and DOC land. The worst examples are in communist/socialist countries like Zimbabwe and anywhere where the rule of law fails and private ownership is set aside like Sri Lanka.
    Different cultural values can make the situation worse.

      In the Soviet era the tiny plots put aside for the peasants’ personal use and profit ( they were allowed to produce for themselves and local markets) eclipsed the whole commune’s produce and productivity by a huge factor.

    It’s not really about reclaiming land for any productive purpose.
    Getting agreement regarding what to do with it, who would do any work required and who and how they would be remunerated is beyond capability.
    It is about just having the land.
    Most will not visit it, or look at it.

  Once again David Seymour is making a lot of sense on these issues. He is advocating that government departmental spending is dropped back to 2017 levels. Do we need all these government departments and all these bureaucracies just because we have had them for a long time?
  
  In my opinion I would like to see less government and more individual and family and community responsibility. The government at the moment mainly seems to be communicating millions of dollars of propaganda telling us to wear a mask, to get vaccinated, that the speed limit on our roads should be less, what safety rating of cars we should buy, to be cautious in case we have an accident etc.
  
  Maybe if their budgets were cut they would stop telling us what to do every minute of every day?

    Like most things David Seymour says, it has a lot of merit. It’s also a good idea in general, and for those two reasons alone, Labour wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.

  National supported the initial Covid responses as it was framed as a bipartisan response. But as soon as Jacinda got what she wanted she threw threw the National leader out of the room. And a significant part of the extra spending has gone on electioneering rather than genuinely needed for Covid response. That is Corruption with a big C.

  I think the issue is the quality of the spending, and the lack of targets or measured outcomes.
  Much like even in the context of government spending causing inflation, Luxon was about targeting spending which is not productive and not just slashing budgets for their own sake.
  A bit like businesses work – you spend money, where you know there is a return (a business case).
  You also review the outcome, and take learnings from it.
  None of which Labour seem fussed on.

  I think Luxon deliberately accepted the interview, knowing it would be hostile. Good practice to show he doesn’t get flustered. It also will be used to prove he doesn’t run away or waffle, to contrast with what the Prime Minister does. He also nailed a lot of colours to the mast on co-governance.
  The interview did not do him any harm as those that don’t like National like Maori nationalists were never going to vote for him. However, some of the waverers will be swayed.

  I think Musk’s twitter play might be just a new front in a war he is fighting with Washington’s power’s that be because he won’t kiss the ring – He’s pissed off some very powerful adversaries, most particularly the Biden admin (who won’t even mention Tesla if they can avoid it). Govt are currently stonewalling him in his desire to test his big rocket in texas through endlessly delaying environmental approval – about 8months of delay so far, with no end in sight, and they can kill it or delay him for years if they want. Perhaps by threatening a core part of their power in this way, and being prepared to halt his attack as a quid quo pro if they get out of the way of his rocket, he can do a trade to get the approval he needs sooner.

    Ardern would do well to study how Singapore’s Political System works, albeit without a President. In doing so, she should note that there’s no Co-Governance mentioned with any favoured race and Singapore consists of a multitude of races, all working and contributing to a common cause, that of the Republic and its citizens are well rewarded for doing so.

    Must be a serious global effect as yoy rents in Auckland were the lowest increase in New Zealand at 1.7%. Meanwhile over the same period Taranaki up 22.2%. Obviously a different global effect.

At the beginning of November a fire damaged the roof of the Bromley sewage plant in Christchurch, and since then a foul stench has enshrouded the eastern and central suburbs of the city. Leanne Dalziel’s Labour – leaning council, emboldened by the laissez-faire ‘don’t rock the boat’ approach of the greenies at Environment Canterbury, have done nothing tangible to solve the problem- no doubt endless meetings and emails and discussions but no action whatsoever thus far to get rid of this appalling health hazard. And the response when Phil Mauger, current city councilor and mayoral candidate, offers to at least have a go at alleviating the stench on a temporary basis by spraying bleach on the offending sewage plant to provide some relief for the beleaguered residents? Poo poo the idea out of hand. The Mayor simply doesn’t care! The sooner she goes and Phil Mauger takes control of the city the happier and healthier Christchurch will be.

  As much as I dislike Dalziel and co, you’re actually incorrect.
  
  I’m loosely connected to the repair of those ponds and can tell you the issue of fixing it and dealing with the smell is not down to politics. Rather its a function of how long it takes to investigate the damage, remove impacted material, and rebuild. One of the biggest issues it actually supply chain – there are specialist parts that are being impacted by global transport issues.

I would not normally comment on advertisements, but I clicked on a ‘Z Energy’ ad this morning. Because it the click bait was their plans to install fast EV chargers across New Zealand. I thought that might be interesting.

But the ad tells you nothing about chargers. It is basically an apology for selling petroleum products, and explaining how they are doing other things, like promoting cycling. There is a picture of two happy folk riding bikes.

It then doubles down by telling us that Z Energy likes gay people and wants to stop bullying in New Zealand.

Just extraordinary that a company that distributes a product that is so essential to society and the economy, has to apologise for selling it. And say ‘Look over there – gay people riding bikes.’

This is what we have become.

        The only way that the hydrogen economy “works”, is if it is propped up by massive subsidies.
        
        If we have surplus electricity, then there are far better ways to use it to build the economy. Reducing the price of electricity in NZ would be a leg up for industry.

        I believe molecular H2 is transparent to I.R.
        
        But Yes, it is a potent indirect greenhouse gas.
        
        (Not trying to be pedantic…but if we use the IR absorption spectra to explain why H2O, CO2, CH4 , N2O are GHgases, then we’d better understand why the non-absorbing H2 is considered an “indirect” GHG).

        You are right Maggy (as always) H2 is a greenhouse gas only in the effect that it has on other components in the atmosphere. This is much the same as CFCs. One often has to use inaccurate shortcuts to describe things, especially as most people have next to know scientific understanding.

        Z Energy Shareholders voted (>70%) to approve the sale at the end of March (this year), Ampol has received consent from the Overseas Investment Office and the date for lodging any objections has passed. The only remaining step is High Court Approval, now scheduled for a hearing on 26 April. If successful, the sale will proceed sometime in May.

Some thoughts for National as they begin to firm their approach to winning the election next year:

Create a mechanism through the IRD where every New Zealander received annually a one-pager breakdown of where their taxes went.

The benefit would be NZers being more engaged in this matter of national interest and more concerned at runaway government spending – as they can more directly see how much is being drained from their pay as a result.

It would be a doddle to develop – based on the NZ Government’s total spend and how the pie was sliced up – given your (income) tax payments what $ amount went to which part of government.

A means would also be needed to estimate for each New Zealander what other (non-income) tax you were also likely to have paid (GST, fuel, ACC, booze etc etc) and have that added.

Like my energy account, it could also show a comparison of what you paid historically.

This would help make known to New Zealanders exactly how much the Government has taken from them, how much went where and at what rate it is increasing over time.

We could also add things like the total and every New Zealanders share of government debt – and how this is increasing over time.

Did I read the other day that every New Zealander’s share of government debt is $77,ooo?

What ever the number is I reckon 98% of New Zealanders wouldn’t know it. Perhaps if they did they might care a bit more about government continually adding to it?

Labour and the Greens would oppose this, of course, but in doing so they would have to explain to New Zealanders why this information should be hidden from them.

I’d love to see them have to do that….

Scary since the next few decades of NZ’s economic fortunes are in his hands with the next budget. Pumping another $6b of election bribes in at this time is definitely not going to help NZ’s cause.

Robertson expecting Orr to bail him out with interest rate rises to combat inflation whilst he’s furiously pumping more borrowed money into the system is a joke.

My partner was telling me about her day yesterday. I am no longer shocked by state housing type stories. But I did raise my eyebrows at this one.

A woman, aged only in her late 20s, has just been moved from a motel into a brand new KO 5 bedroom house. That is not unusual. What is unusual is that, aged less than 30, she has EIGHT children to eight different fathers.

She has now met this guy who is going to move in with her. He has given notice that he does not now need his own state house and will be giving it up. He has been told that if things go south with octo-mum, it will be years before he gets his own state house again.

I can see baby number 9 coming up 🙁

New bilingual traffic signs for schools to replace English-only
The Land Transport Rule: Traffic Control Devices (Kura/School Signs) Amendment 2022 came into force on April 5 2022.
It sees both the te reo Māori word for school – kura – and the English word featured on the signs.
Waka Kotahi NZTA said the kura/school signs would be used when existing signs needed to be replaced or new signs were put up.
All English-only school signs will remain legal traffic signs until they are replaced.

… “We’ve waited 35 years to see these bilingual signs to uphold our native language.”

… Kane Patena, Waka Kotahi’s director of land transport, said the change represented a “significant opportunity to increase New Zealanders exposure to te reo Māori”.

  One of the most fundamental principles in science is to compare apples with apples. ie. Measure consistently.
  
  For example if you are comparing the size of elephants to kangaroos you could weigh them both and compare that, or you might measure their tails and compare that.
  
  What would be invalid is measuring an elephant’s nose and comparing that to a kangaroo’s tail.
  
  That is not happening when we’re seeing an assessment of the pros and cons of vaccination.
  
  Any death/hospitalisation within 28 days of getting a CV19 infection is considered a CV19 death/hospitalisation.
  
  If that it the yardstick then any death/hospitalisation within 28 days of a vaccination should be counted as a vaccination death/hospitalisation.
  
  If we measured that way then there would be millions of vaccination deaths world wide.

Here’s one of the craziest thinks I’ve seen in a long time: By 2025 we’re going to be zooming from port to port in electric ground effect aircraft at 540 km/h, 5 to 10 metres above the water surface, at $60 a ticket.

Yeah right.

Where to start?

2025? C’mon seriously, the people touting this only have a 12th scale prototype. It takes far more than 3 years to bring a plane or ship to completion, do trials etc.

The Caspian Sea Monster failed. Why? It had to face far less challenging engineering challenges.

The Caspian Sea is far milder than the Pacific. It is an inland sea, far flatter and far more suited to ground effect aircraft, but they still struggled to make it work properly.

Ground effect aircraft ride on a cushion of air slightly above the sea. The lift changes as they go over swell and troughs. I struggle to see them being able to do this at 540km/h.

Larger planes get more ground effect lift than smaller planes. The Caspian Sea Monster was far larger and had a ground effect altitude of approx 4 to 14 metres. It was designed for use in less than 1.2 metres of swell. A smaller plane, as proposed here, would struggle to get the performance of the Caspian Sea Monster because it gets less ground effect altitude.

NZ conditions are quite often very severe. We often have storms that prevent ferries from running. If a ferry can’t run then one of these can’t run either. It would be an exceptional day when we get less than 1.2m sea conditions.

The Caspian Sea Monster was abandoned after a crash. High speeds that close to the water surface give very little room for error. It would be far worse on the open sea.

$60 a ticket? C’mon we can’t even get a train to operate from Auckland to Hamilton on $60 a ticket.

Lastly, they’re hoping that social media will give them the reality check they want. Really? You’re going to set up a $700M company without hiring a few engineers to give you a reality check first?

This has the fingerprints of an eco-scam all over it. Just the name “Sea Glider” is already setting the expectation that it is not a powered plane and is more environmentally benign.

Fools and their money are quickly parted. So long as this remains a private venture that doesn’t scam the vulnerable and the taxpayer, what do I care? Go ahead with your folly.

Spare a thought for South Africa. Their load shedding is back, with most areas looking forward to 7 hours a day without power for the next 3 days – at least. they’ve had 6 or so days so far this month.

As winter approaches they can expect even more problems and even longer load shedding.

Last year was a record with about 50 days of load shedding (approx 200 hours). This year it looks likely to exceed that quite handsomely.

  Such a good term that, ‘load shedding’. It is technically correct, so defensibly used by the media.
  
  What it actually means is this: If you have frozen goods they might spoil. If you need lighting you’ll need a torch. If you need heating, cooling, or medical equipment operating you’ll need to go some place else – every day until reliable power is restored.
  
  I remember blackouts here in the 1970s. They became rarer until almost a distant memory by the mid-1980s. Underinvestment in distribution, and a eco-cult (aka “I’ve stopped thinking rationally”) focus on so-called ‘renewables’ will make blackouts de rigueur again.

Being in MERCOSUR, there was little trade with the USA. It’s now open to trade negotiations with the USA. Chinese firms are unlikely to secure infrastructure projects. The proposed port will not be built by China. There will be no deep water port either.

Behold the feeble attempt by Morgan Godfery to conjure up a defence of Labour’s 3 Waters theft and boondoggle.

1. Nowhere does he explain why elite Maori should have any role whatsoever in managing 3 waters assets or how they are essential to good future outcomes.

2. Nowhere does he explain why central government could not borrow money at ‘favourable’ rates and give it to existing local authorities to invest in 3 Waters capacity and operations.

You don’t need 3 Waters to do that.

3. He doesn’t even attempt to counter the accusation that 3 Waters is an essential first step in ultimately giving Maori water assets nor the issue that a little down the track Maori will be awarded water royalties – something not specifically excluded from the enabling legislation I understand.

4. Nowhere does he explain exactly how 3 Waters will deliver better outcomes versus the status quo other than ‘magic happens’.

5. Nowhere does he explain how, after five years of failure to deliver on its promises, Labour will miraculously happen to make a success of this attempt.

They have no credibility in delivery. None.

Pathetic. Feeble. Risible.

We’re not fooled Morgan.

  It looks like he does, because there are some very clear differences from who we seen in Singapore, also when there was a leak at the first families home and he was cleaning around a window, the guy was very skinny and clearly someone else, i remember wondering why his back was turned every time, note, he did not walk down the stairs from the plane with Ardern , and he was never seen when speaking to everyone else

For the majority it is less than half our total.

The Mangaweka bridge, which cost 11million, has been completed but cannot be used until June.

Why? Because iwi say it cannot be used until they have performed an opening ceremony and they can’t do it until June. .

These opening ceremonies need to be cancelled for good. They are a total waste of time and money.

Reading Johnny depps story of his relationship with amber heard …. So familiar …. Women are far more violent than men , not to mention the psychological abuse a lot dish out constantly .

I know of many many instances of this having worked with thousands of men openly talking at smoko .

We put up with it .

If you read media it’s only men who are violent and if you talk back you’re a whole range of evils , things like misogynist n selfish n narcissist .
If you don’t talk back you’re a ghoster or gas lighter whatever the hell they are

Why do we put up with it ?

Basically the way I see it a man’s job in life is to take shit . We take it and carry on , it’s why we get things done .
We don’t hv the extra rampaging hormones , a lot of women are actually out of control , of themselves .
We understand this

Without stoic men this world would turn to shit tomorrow.
At the moment men hv been sidelined , scapegoated , if you’re white you’re told everything is your fault . It’s open season .

Things will change , but women assaulting their men and verbal abuse will never end .
We know we can’t hit them
If men knew they could run around hassling anyone with no physical comebacks we would all be arseholes . But we know if we cross a line , another man will bash us .
Women …. No boundaries , they know we won’t report it , and know most of us won’t give it back.
I would be very interested in the next census to hv a survey question stating : hv you been assaulted by a woman in the last 12 months ? .

  While I think this is a massive generalisation, I’ve seen this too (abuse is massively prevalent from both sexes unfortunately). There was a study recently (that someone posted here) stating that men are always responsible for the breakdown of relationships – basically, men have to weather all storms and lose on every compromise otherwise the relationship will fail. That’s a ridiculous generalisation of course but it’s not uncommon – I’ve definitely seen it many times.
  
  It’s also worth noting that women hold a huge amount of power when young kids are involved in a relationship. This is the single greatest driver of mental health problems in our country (including suicide).

I love the idea in the Herald today that all AT staff and board members should be prevented from using their cars unless essential for carrying tools etc. This idea could be extended to the Greens and Labour MPs keen to see more public transport use and Greens could also eliminate air travel, practice what you preach.

I watched a long video on hydrogen and its production a couple of years back.The simple takeaway i got was it takes $30 of electricity to make $20 of hydrogen.

  Yep, but there are places where electricity is ridiculously cheap with no economic way to get it to market. In sunny tropical deserts electricity is already as little as NZD $0.02/kWh from PV, about 1/4 of NZ wholesale rates. So if that makes $0.03/kW hydrogen that can be shipped and burned to make $0.06/kWh electricity in a combined cycle power plant half a world away it is still cheaper than the typical $0.08/kWh wholesale electricity currently in those markets. Or it can be used to provide winter heating, or run a home or local fuel cell system to make far cheaper domestic electricity (and a bit of waste heat for hot water).
  
  For comparison natural gas costs about $5-10/MMBTU in most OECD markets, the equivalent of about $0.02-.04/kWh in energy terms. So in a few years renewably produced Hydrogen can be close to parity with the cost of natural gas, markups and margins dominating the cost of energy to retail consumers, meaning a fairly painless/minimal cost transition to entirely renewable energy is possible if we want to in coming few decades.

  I’m going to go with the assumption that your figure is correct. So what happens to the $30.00 dollars of electricity if you don’t use it to make $20.00 of hydrogen?
  
  If the electricity is hydro, wind, geothermal or solar it would go to waste if not used. The same idea is to pump water uphill when excess power is available and then use that energy when you actually need it. Turning excess electricity into hydrogen is the same. Don’t waste it when available.

    The only time in NZ we have ‘spare’ hydro is when water is being spilled, which is rare. For the last 2 -3 weeks the Cook Strait cable has been sending power South (occasionally 24 hrs continuously), which is also rare, but is because the southern hydro lakes are seasonally and historically very low. They have been below the historical average for the last 6 weeks or more. If you plan to use ‘excess’ power to pump water uphill to act as a water battery, then the hydro dams storage contingency will be even less. The country is being spared power shortages at present because 1, the geothermal stations are running full bore (pun intended!), and 2, we are burning gas and coal at a remarkable rate.   I don’t think that stories and anecdotes passed down from parents to children count as formal and complete education.
  Well before the maori arrived in NZ the Greeks and Romans and Egyptians and many eastern civilisations had for thousands of years been writing, formulating, analysing, documenting all the issues related to human existence.
