Yesterday DPF posted on comparative ‘Covid death’ rates. A question quite rightly asked related to the determination of death with, or of Covid. I made the point that authorities have been guilty of manipulating definitions, and with it historical records, in order to support a political narrative.

Today I learned of one such definitional data crime:

“In an announcement Tuesday, the Department of Health and Human Services said it had redefined COVID-19 hospitalization to include only patients being treated with remdesivir or dexamethasone, drugs used for hospitalized patients with moderate to severe illness. Those hospitalized with milder symptoms or primarily for another cause are no longer included — even if they continue to take up a hospital bed because they are too ill to be discharged.”

This definition allows Covid hospitalization numbers to be deliberately reduced simply by withholding remdesivir or dexamethasone, both expensive pharmaceuticals.

Despite this, and long after this definition change is forgotten, analysts will take and use datasets that are factually incorrect as some Covid sufferers admitted to hospital as a direct result of that illness will have been excluded.

  It is fortunate that your epidemiological expertise will be available in the years to come to provide astute analysis of the myriad datasets that will be needed to draw sound conclusions about death rates, efficacy of treatments, etc. I do not underestimate the scale and difficulty of your task, and applaud the application of you and your fellow specialists to make your knowledge and insight so freely available.

        How extraordinary. We have a Prime Minister who doesnt believe in the current democracy and wants “sophisicated”democracy what ever that means and an Attorney General the chief law maker who doesnt agree with our Bill of Rights Act.
        As I have said many times the worst Government and the worst governance I have seen in over 50 years.

        I doubt that the attorney-general ‘doesnt (sic) agree with our Bill of Rights Act’. I’m not sure if you are referring to his advice about the Rotorua bill or to a comment he might have made about the high court’s MIQ decision.
        The plain language of the bill tends to disguise the balancing act that governments have to perform with respect to competing rights. And the bill of rights is not supreme law – governments may pass laws that infringe on those rights, and have done so many times.

        Like most others on KB, as I read the content of the comment sections I naturally form a mental picture of the various attributes and appearance of the other posters. While I cannot be 100% certain at this point, I had an interaction recently with a neighbour who calls himself “John” but, because of his temperament and mannerisms, I suspect is actually the KB stalwart known as mikenmildagain. Post anything he considers a tendentious comment? Mike’s not having it!

    It’s a fair point… however, a while back the government did say they would distinguish between people who died with covid and because of covid.
    
    They have not done what they would say, so further diminish their integrity and continue to obfuscate covid deaths, dying with covid is being misrepresented as dying from covid.
    
    It’s all very frustrating. The government information vacuum is naturally being filled by people with reasoned guesses.

  I think it was us not doing the with COVID count , I remember right at the start a guy in the states died after a car accident, he was counted as a COVID death, this government lied on every level, and are now counting like the rest of the world

  The vast majority of statistics presented over the last 2 years have been nonsensical narrative supports not based on any real science. We have been victims of the greatest medical fraud in the history of the planet. Now people need to start working out why and what the ultimate goal is.

    What? Where have you been? Doctors have been deregistered for providing treatments for Covid. Experts have been censured and censored for suggesting treatments. The State has demanded everyone be vaccinated, and if you don’t prescribe with that, you can forget being a doctor. Only in November last year did Pharmac approve ronapreve as a medicine. Apart from that, doctors have not been allowed to treat the virus, here or anywhere else in the world. It’s simply been about the vaccine. Many doctors wanted to speak out but haven’t been able to. They certainly haven’t been permitted to prescribe any treatments.
    
    The *cough cough* vaccine isn’t a treatment.

      Probably the only medical science based pushback in NZ has come from a large number of doctors & medical scientists on NZDSOS. I get their periodic emails, and their responses to the Plandemic would have been by far & away better than the Political Shamdemic we have been forced to live through.

    Wayne Mapp – you’re completely missing the point. It is statistical fraud. Changing the methodology of assigning covid positive status during a “pandemic” is malfeasance.
    For the last 2 years everything has been done to ensure that the number of covid “cases” (another bullshit term) were as high as possible to support the nonsensical policies and mandates. Now that the story is falling apart and vaccines are being proven to increase your chance of catching covid, the numbers are being deliberately manipulated yet again.
    Not everyone who gets covid gets the same type of care. But if you’re covid positive then for the sake of statistical integrity you must use the same methods for counting those positive cases. Or as is the case with everything around covid, the numbers are completely meaningless.

      Two years into the pandemic The NZ MofH announced that it had changed the way Covid deaths were being reported.
      
      Change in death reporting and reconciliation of deaths tally. Ministry of Health today announced a new way of reporting COVID-related deaths within 28 days of postive COVID test, in three categories: (a) COVID is clearly the cause of death, 34 deaths so far, (b) died with but not of COVID, 2 deaths so far, (c) cause of death still under investigation, 48 so far.

      From this information it looks like only one third of the previous reported covid deaths were actually a result of the covid infection alone.

      This blog is the property of David Farrar who has faith in numbers. Once he published the results of a survey he had commissioned into the political leanings of the people at the Parliamentary protest. Someone pointed out that it was meaningless because the protest was organic , fluid with people coming and going from the lawn, staying the night with relatives and attending next day for an hour or two, so the politics of the protesters could not accurately be charted. The data published ad nauseum about the pandemic world-wide is all suspect.

    Around the west they did expel a lot of very sick vulnerable folk out of hospitals , to free up bed space ,and into even more vulnerable settings such as old folks care homes thereby triggering a huge wave of deaths ………..

    Wayne – Dr’s and hospitals in the US were given extra funding if they prescribed Remdesivir. There are fewer RCTs showing it’s efficacy than Ivermectin and plenty of anecdote of it killing patients. So, would you believe that Dr’s were being directed by their hospital managers that they had to prescribe Remdesivir just for the extra money?

      Despite some initial indication that Remdesivir might slightly reduce recovery time, the World Health Organization conducted a large-scale analysis that found it “had little or no effect on hospitalized patients with Covid-19, as indicated by overall mortality, initiation of ventilation, and duration of hospital stay.” Unsurprisingly, the WHO recommended against using this drug to treat Covid-19 in November 2020 (and still does).
      
      At worst, however, Remdesivir is harmful. A subsequent analysis of the agency’s safety database found it likely caused kidney failure, and when independent trials (those not sponsored by a pharmaceutical company) are analyzed alone, there is a clear statistical trend to harm. WHO also warns that the drug may be associated with an increased reporting of liver problems.

    I’d suggest some naivety here on how power structures work – which I find surprising given your background.
    
    Medicine, like politics has a hierarchy that means that a few at the top control the overall narrative. In politics we elect MP’s to represent their electorate, but the moment they turn up at the House of Representatives, they change and are required to represent only their party – why else do they have party whips? The party is controlled internally by it’s own hierarchy, and that leads all the way up to the top with just a handful, who control the country. In the current case there are others who are pulling the strings, like Helen Clark who recently revealed her “interest” when Cindy was unable to respond.
    
    In the medical field the hierarchy is just as tight, with doctors now managed through funding and other imperatives – the PHO’s dole out their money, the DHBs are above them and the MoH at the top with a politically appointed person at the top.
    
    So we do not have doctors who can speak and prescribe freely – already some opposed to the government’s medical policies have been deregistered, or censured. Sufficient number to cause others to hold their tongues.
    
    The upshot is that we do not have a free society anymore. Be it medicine, education (look at Alwyn Poole & Chartered Schools), and now in the very structure of local government. All controlled, or becoming more controlled by elite structures being entrenched into our society.
    
    Yes we can all turn up at the polling stations, but what will our votes be really worth. We don’t have an effective opposition any more with National. Their might and funding will ensure they stay the predominant opposition, and even if they do get into power, they appear to be controlled by yet another “global” elite. It appears Luxon has already been on the “overseas training course”.
    
    Luxon’s weasel words when asked about rescinding the changes to our health and local government indicate no backbone – as Muldoon said about Bill Rowling, as “having a shiver running around his body looking for a spine to run up”.

  Those researchers have a natural scepticism about other peoples’ investigations.
  I suspect that there will be years and years of re-examination of data files and their sources to come.
  In 50 years people will look back and see what a total con this whole pandemic has been.
  In 50 years time most of us here today will be long gone – but there will be intelligent thinkers with the well-being of the human race in mind, and hopefully they will prevail.
  Or maybe, like weeds, we will anyway.

  Dexamethasone is an old and very cheap drug that is used for a lot of things. Given that US hospitals have been charging a premium to Covid patients I expect this is an attempt to stop them coding every patient as having covid just for the money. A good chance there will be a few patients receiving Dex now just to pump up the billing.
  
  You’re right about the definitions being important and they are being consistently manipulated, but you’re wrong about what’s going on here.

    The WHO may sit in wherever their (no doubt nearly gold-plated) offices are and make recommendations and resolutions until they are blue in the face.
    
    As Mr Putin has most recently demonstrated, global agreements mean nothing if a government does not choose to honour them.
    
    Regardless of what WHO says, governments will do what is necessary to keep themselves in power. Dictators with guns, and those subject to the ballot box with at least one eye and ear firmly fixed on the polling.

    There is no fight back because we no longer have political leaders, we have functionaries whose job it is to stay on message and implement the structures in order to reach the common destination. This is what happens when global governance is centralised and cashed-up “stakeholders” and their NGOs are given more say than elected representatives. Why are people like Klaus Schwab and Bill Gates so heavily active in world decision making? The final vestiges of the sovereign nation are fast disappearing.

      We need a ‘Sovereign New Zealand’ political party. One that has a policy of having no policy on anything other than strengthening national, family, and personal sovereignty.   Exactly. Your point is proven with the number of advertisements on TV advocating for more Climate Change regulation/restrictions.
  Even the Insurance industry is advocating for changes in order that they can increase their policy charges. I received an e-mail from my Insurer a couple of days ago suggesting I do a reappraisal of my assets taking Climate Change outcomes into consideration.
  Now, to top it all off, out from under a rock comes James Shaw raving on about a need for a Climate Change reboot in NZ.
  What happens to all the money we provide to the UN to fight Climate Change? I call on the Greens to provide a breakdown of all NZ contributions to the UN for the last financial/calendar year under the Climate Change scam and how that money was spent.   A decent hiatus while further legal advice is sought, followed by a very slow process to rework the Bill with additional (slow) consulting would work to delay until the 2022 local government elections are done and dusted.

Friend of a friend recently passed in a Rest Home. Only aged 51. He had level 4 (the highest) Prostate Cancer which had migrated throughout his body. Wheelchared, lifting from for in and out of bed, incontinent. What finished him off was catching Covid, so his cause of death is listed as Covid.

  After being ~150kg most of her life she died weighing ~60kg – riddled with cancer and a heart condition.
  
  Right at the end she caught CV19. At the max CV19 shortened her life by 1 to 2 months, but pneumonia would likely have done the job anyway.

Only 22 percent of children are fully vaccinated. I can help this guy with his shock. The vaccine does not work very well, to put it mildly, and the risks of COVID to children are very small.

Put another way, if the measles vaccine worked like the COVID vaccine, where would be an outrage.

I recall 2 years ago commenting here that a vaccine for a coronavirus had never been successfully developed.

Then the trials reported that the vaccines were 95 percent effective. Like many others, I thought that was fantastic. Then the scam was exposed. Governments around the world have spent a couple of hundred billion on vaccines that are literally useless at preventing infection. That is insane.

Yet this guy Baker acts like he is brainwashed. 15 percent of parents could be misguided. But not 80 percent.

    I agree. He has never even acknowledged that the vaccine efficacy has been – lets put it politely – “profoundly disappointing”. He acts like the Pfizer press releases from 18 months ago are credible.
    
    For 18 months, I devoted one hour each day to reviewing data in the UK and Israel on COVID and the vaccines. So I think I have an informed opinion. (I have stopped – totally over it.).
    
    BTW I now think that the vaccines for children UNDER 5 years old may never be approved – it has been delayed and delayed in the USA. And what would be the point? If 80 percent of parents in New Zealand are not going to fully vaccinate their 5 year olds, they are certainly not going to vaccinate their babies.
    
    And it is worth repeating – many parents, especially Maori parents – have stopped listening when they hear “vaccine”. And that will have deadly consequences because many of them have now given up on childhood vaccinations – you know – the ones that work. 🙁

      BY – The changing of the definition of the word “vaccine” will have profound effects on health outcomes around the world. Real vaccines were trusted by the vast majority. The actions of the last 2 years will have destroyed that trust in the minds of many people.
      
      I know I have lost most of my confidence in the health authorities to the point I have no intention of going near the local medical centre unless it is a serious trauma injury that I can’t deal with at home. The local team still won’t acknowledge the errors they made. I don’t mind the fact they might have made mistakes, we all do, but the inability to put their hand up is disappointing.
      Then there was their refusal to take out my wife’s stitches (on the side of her nose) because she said she was exempt from wearing a mask. That was disturbing.

New Zealanders have shown their disgust at Russia invading Ukraine, and rightly so. Gerry Brownlee proposed a piece of legislation to deal with issues such as this but it was voted down by Labour saying ‘it wasn’t fit for purpose’ and that they (Labour) were going to introduce a ‘Bespoke’ piece of legislation to deal with the Russian invasion.
I haven’t seen the ‘Bespoke’ legislation, but could have missed it under the cloud of Covid, or was this another case of all talk and no do.

  The NZ Herald-owned Rotorua Daily Post, with a flattering picture of Wily Willie Jackson, reports: “Government ministers say a law to introduce Maori seats to the Rotorua District Council can be salvaged after a report found it could breach the Bill of Rights Act”.
  
  Do any Kiwiblog followers read the print copy of the Rotorua Daily Post? Has the newspaper made an editorial stand against the undemocratic ward-voting move in its city?
  
  From its web site, much of the Rotorua Daily Post seems in line with reporting in the NZ Herald.
  
  Both are owned by NZME, as is Newstalk ZB radio.
  
  With the Left-bias of the NZ media, it’s worth keeping an eye on initiative in America led by former US McDonalds president and CEO, Edward Rensi. Could NZ anti-Woke activists do something similar with NZME?
  
  Rensi leads the Boardroom Initiative, which this week forced shareholder votes at Bank of America and Citigroup on the companies’ diversity training and minority hiring quotas.
  
  Both moves were defeated. The Washington Times says: “An undisclosed majority of shareholders at both companies followed corporate instructions in their proxy statements to vote against the proposals.”

Every so often you come across something in your reading that needs to be shared. I was reading The Best of A A Gill last night and offer to KB readers the following from a piece on India.

“Indian food tends to be gassy – slow-cooked vegetables and pulses – so you see lines of Dutch tourists who at every step sound like an RAF motorbike display. They wear expressions of pained concentration : farting in India is playing Raj roulette with the linen”.

By the way A A Gill is very good for those who haven’t read him. One of his other articles in this book from 2016 ends up “the best programme on TV last week ( Cathy Come Home) was made in 1966. In black and white. Not everything gets better.”

Listened to an interesting discussion on Heather du Plessis Allan’s show last night where she interviewed Professor Robert MacCulloch on the Reserve Bank and Robertson’s failure to control inflation to under the 3% threshold. A very good explanation of the ineptitude of both Orr and Robertson, and why Orr is back-tracking. Lets see how much media coverage this gets as it completely refutes Robertson’s claims NZ is in the same boat as overseas country’s.

Yesterday’s High Court decision is further justification for the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Government’s response to Covid-19 and its variants. The RCoI should conduct a comprehensive, independent investigation into every government decision on Covid, starting in January 2020 and include decisions taken by government departments and agencies such as the Ministry of Health and MBIE.

If Labour will not do this, National must make the establishment of a RCoI a priority for their first 100 days if elected next year. Covid has been the single most expensive episode in New Zealand’s history, putting the country billions of dollars into debt and only the scrutiny provided by a Royal Commission will suffice.

According to the Dept of Internal Affairs, a Royal Commission of Inquiry is “reserved for the most serious matters of public importance”. Is anyone prepared to argue that our two-year-plus, multi-billion-dollar Covid response does not meet that criteria?

  However the downside for labour is that Jacinda will be called as a witness and will face cross examination from every party that has standing as well as direct scrutiny from the commission.
  
  I cant see any of that going well. The list of questions that need to be asked is endless. And these will all be answered under oath.
  
  There is no way this will occur prior to the election.
  
  However the piper will eventually need to be paid and it will not end well for the princess.

  TS, unfortunately won’t happen under a Labour lead government but given the cost, and on-going cost, to NZ; then an inquiry into the handling of covid is an absolute must.
  National need to come out now and say they will instigate a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the total covid response, and spell out examples of the areas of possible review, as it is widely known where the cock-ups/waste have been.
  Examination of the covid response is just one of Labour’s Achilles heals, but one that ties a key driver of current & on-going inflation too.

We made a point of watching the live Police Conference yesterday afternoon. It was fronted by Detective Inspector Karen Bright from Counties Manukau.

Karen took the podium wearing a rather fetching black-silk-blouse festooned with flowers, over which she had donned her Stab-Proof Vest, set off by a Mini-Maglite on the right shoulder.

To be honest, the poor thing looked more nervous than Anne Frank practicing the tuba. Why ‘CUDDLES’ himself, dressed in all his medals & braid couldn’t have fronted such an important-Presser is beyond us!

  That is the thing Mags, When I was their age (25 years ago) all cops were over 6 foot and would literally beat the shit out of you if committed a crime. Police back then were respected but feared.
  
  When they came into the Loaded Hog and you were underage it was you that pooed your pants. Nowadays 2 in 3 police I see are the fairer sex and 60kgs dripping wet. Whereas the Criminals are getting bigger (and fatter) year-on-year.

    So that bit must be OK.

  I don’t think anyone would dispute that natural immunity would be better in the long run.
  
  The “vaccine” is not a real (natural vaccine). It is a custom built thing that attacks in one way only: targeting a specific shape of spike protein.
  
  That is all: one attack vector only.
  
  As the virus mutates, the spike protein shape changes and the fit isn’t as good. The “vaccine” loses its already limited effectiveness.
  
  Natural immunity (or a real natural vaccine for that matter) attacks via multiple mechanisms (IIRC 20 or more known vectors).
  
  Mutating to bypass one mechanism is easy – like jinking past one player on the footy field.
  
  Mutating to bypass multiple mechanisms is a lot harder – like trying to side step a whole back line.
  
  One tweak can massively reduce the effectiveness as we see with Omicron which as numerous spike mutations. Boosters are not helping because there’s little point in filling up with something that doesn’t “fit” the mutated virus.
  
  If anything, a leaky vaccine drives mutation.

New Zealand used to be known for it’s own ‘home-grown’ Entrepreneurs once.
Not so much these days by the sound of it.

Heard a caller to Talkback earlier, saying that the entire chain of ‘Shosha Vape Store’s in New Zealand (now over 100 and growing) are owned by an Indian immigrant…. Himanshu Mittal.

It’s a similar situation with most of the Liquor Shops as well apparently.

Imagine if the Greens had made Hard-Drugs legal…there’d very likely be an Asian owned meth store on every street corner as well.

Could someone please get down to the Hawkes Bay smartly, and tell the small children playing in the park to stop being racist by being frightened of the women with tattoos on their face!
When that is done please tell Stuff the kids have promised to stop being frightened, so Stuff can maybe worry about less important things like crime, education, economy, inflation or healthcare.

More Woke revisionism, as celebrated on Stuff ….

”A street named after a 19th century Royal Navy warship has been changed to a waka believed to have first discovered Aotearoa. The Porirua City Council voted unanimously to rename Calliope Crescent in Cannons Creek, Wellington, to Matahourua Crescent.

The council also plans to rename the nearby Calliope Park.

Stuff says former deputy mayor of Porirua, Litea Ah Hoi, whose comments were relayed by councillor Euon Murrell before the council voted, denied the name change was about race, ethnicity, or culture.

“We have to stop weaponising feeble excuses for the historical slaughter of Maori and land grab,” she said, according to the Stuff report of the reported remarks.

Stuff says that Porirua mayor Anita Baker was “pleased” the name-change resolution passed, because it was “really important” for the local tribe.

Stuff says the street’s current name is after the frigate HMS Calliope, on which Maori chief Te Rauparaha was taken to Auckland from Wellington after he was arrested from during the Wellington Wars in 1846. He was imprisoned by Governor George Grey for two years.

The Calliope was stationed in New Zealand for two and a-half years, and also took part in British colonial warfare in China.

According to Wikipedia:

”The ship’s Royal Marines saw action in the Flagstaff War in the north of New Zealand. A Royal Marine was killed at the siege of Ruapekapeka and two seamen were killed in the Hutt Valley campaign.

The move to diminish place and street names related to New Zealand White pioneer history parallels the Leftist drive to indoctrinate school children with a “revised” version of NZ history.

The Porirua replacement name, Matahoura, is said in the Stuff report to be the name of the canoe of Kupe, the Polynesian believed by some tribes to have discovered New Zealand.

The NZ Encyclopedia says of the Kupe legend:

According to some tribal narratives, Kupe was the first Polynesian to discover the islands of New Zealand. His journey there was triggered by difficulties with fishing in Hawaiki, his homeland. Apparently the problem was a great octopus belonging to Kupe’s competitor, Muturangi. Kupe set out in his canoe to kill the octopus, and such was the length of the pursuit that it brought him to New Zealand. With a companion known as Ngake (or Ngahue) in another canoe called Tawhirrirangi, he pursued the creature all the way to Cook Strait (known as Raukawakawa), where it was finally destroyed.
