        I don’t know who I’m going to vote for next election, but it will only be a party that is going to uphold basic human rights and personal freedoms. I would have thought that if any party currently in parliament was going to do that it would be Act.
        
        I watched carefully how all political party leaders responded to the parliament protests, and after what I saw I’ve ruled out voting for National or Act – and I’ve voted National most of my life and Act last election.

        Following the next election, there will certainly be a Govt of some stripe or other. It may not be exactly as you would wish; that would be rare.
        
        However, if you choose not to vote then you can have no complaints about the outcome.
        
        Better to vote for the options that best approximate your views, even if you have to hold your nose while doing so.

  I think many people on Kiwiblog probably consume very little of NZ media, and with good reason. In our house SWMBO still insists on watching One News but all commercials are skipped and a lot of the rubbish that passes for “news” is skipped over also – it’s not unusual for her to get through the hour-long news program in under 25 minutes.

Do Maori really have any interest in “co-governance” of ‘3 Waters”, when there is a greater matter at stake –

Tuku Morgan (Waikato Tainui), is a member of the Three Waters working group who in March dismissed claims that Māori would own the country’s water infrastructure under the reforms. “There is a view being promoted by some of the councillors around the country that this is a Māori grab for power, that we are interested in owning these water assets,” he told 1News. “It’s absolute nonsense. We have always said, that we’re not interested in owning the water assets. What we’re interested in is the proprietor rights over water, and that is a discussion to be had with the Crown, not with councils.”

  Rangatira want it all – all of New Zealand and ruling over everyone. Page 79 of He Puapua says it all. All rights and democracy to be suspended in order to attain ‘equity’ for Maori. Maori (Rangatira that is) will decide which rights are to be allowed, and to decide when equity is achieved. But even if equity is achieved, the right of Rangatira to interfer and determine the rights of New Zealanders will be permanent.

      Many are grateful to Seymour for getting a referendum on “end of life choice,” as the referendum called it. Two-thirds of New Zealand voters supported it.
      
      Seymour showed guts in standing alone in the Parliamentary panic after the mosques shooting, though someone got to him at the last minute when he could have forced rational consideration of firearms law by a committee.
      
      National and ACT need each other, and the views of G from Dunedin in effect would back Ardern.

  The tweet referenced is from an activist who obviously dislikes ACT and all those in favour of a reduction in the size and power of the state.
  
  So why use it? Quote the actual policy, if it exists.
  
  However, should those policies actually exist, then good. It’s exactly what I expect ACT to stand for. Not National, mind you. Oh, no, no, no. That would frighten the natives. And we know that National has a strong diversity focus where candidate selection on the basis of race, gender, etc. is a priority, so we won’t see any moves to abolish or downsize the above-mentioned orgs from that side of the fence.
  
  ACT needs to be a big tail to wag that old blue dog, at least 15-20 MPs so National can’t simply co-opt the Greens or Maori when it wants to take the easy way out.

      Someone up-thread (cmm?) likened contemporary politics to professional wrestling, and he is 100% right: only the most hopelessly deluded accept the verisimilitude of the spectacle. But the same is true is Aus, US, UK, France, Germany … anywhere you care to name.
      
      For 100 years or more, national sovereignty has been diminished to an absolute minimum, and we are in a world of centralised global decision making by opaque and unaccountable “stakeholders.” Politicians do the bidding of those who set the global direction of travel. They do not do the bidding of the voter. It doesn’t matter if Ardern or Luxon is the PM, because there is no substantive difference. To continue the fake wrestling analogy, we have two “combatants” in the ring performing a series of pre-arranged moves, each aiming to not hurt each other so the match can continue, the crowd is entertained and emotionally invested in the outcome, but it is CEO of the WWE Vince McMahon who determines how the match unfolds.

  Oh here we go again FFS , if it’s climate change, they say no added cost to NZers, and not one cent of burden on the economy, they say we will do it with science, already they have taken on board that cow emissions can be reduced by 30% if farms use a certain product, also new grass varieties can reduce emissions for all agri stock, how s as bout we let them have their view without hating on them, farmers( and I know through my work this to be true) want to reduce their emissions, they are looking for scientific ways to do so , they are pouring millions into doing so, what would you have Nats do?         Sounds like you’ve simply transferred your tribalism to National.
        
        I’m sure you know the saying that governments lose elections rather than oppositions winning them and we’re seeing that happen now.
        
        Given that, all that Luxon and National have to do is not scare those precious centre-voters. But that is not the same thing as pandering to the same bullshit that Labour pushes. You really think that Climate Change is a big deal to those voters? In the Western world it’s not when opinion polls are held ranking voter concerns.
        
        It is not a decisive issue and even less so when people are presented with the actual costs of the “solutions” recommended, or when they have to face the consequences. Luxon should be taking advantage of those key weaknesses in the 2050 target, not blathering on about how he supports it also but will do it differently.
        
        I’d like to think that it’s just the usual political party cynicism but given what else I’ve seen from this wet drip I think he probably believes it – which means a National-led government will not only screw us in pursuit of this goal they’ll have taken off the table a weapon to attack Labour with. That’s not smart politics either short or long-term, and assuming Luxon is smart it means he truly believes this.
        
        We got this Labour government because nine years of Key enabled it, and now we’ll be looking at a future Labour government that will be even worse because it will be enabled by two or three terms of Luxon-think.

        To the issue, you have clearly stated that you want to change the government. Sure. I get it.
        
        But that’s not enough for me.
        
        I want New Zealand to change trajectory, and changing the government doesn’t do that. Rather it lulls us, the proletariat, into believing we’ve made a difference when 30+ years of Labour->National->Labour etc has shown that our trajectory stays essentially the same regardless.
        
        Real trajectory change only occurs when there is a crisis (eg the collapse of the Soviet Union), and right now voting National only delays the onset of a crisis when what we desperately need is the statist/socialist boil to be thoroughly lanced. Voting National is, quite literally, taking the blue pill and staying blissfully ignorant of this fact.
        
        I wish this wasn’t the case. I wish National had the vision and moral backbone to arrest our seemingly inexorable slide into statist/socialist destruction. But they don’t. And only once things have become more dire than they are today will there emerge political leadership capable of a trajectory change. Again, I don’t expect this from National, and I’m also doubtful that Seymour is up to the task.

  He is wrong. Unless you use extensive international emissions trading, there are not “a range of ways” to reduce New Zealand emissions. (International emissions trading in simple terms is paying countries like Poland and Belarus to shut down their coal fired energy, and to claim credit for it.)
  
  But back to New Zealand. About 90 percent of emissions are from transport and agriculture, mainly dairy for the latter.
  
  So the only ways to reduce New Zealand emissions is to regulate or price people into more efficient but more expensive cars, and in doing so to price many people out of private transport. And reduce the dairy herd.
  
  Of course perhaps this is just Benedict Yu letting those pesky facts get in the way. Maybe Mr Luxon has a clever plan. But I doubt it.

    Why aren’t agricultural emissions allocated to the end user? It is their decision, often politically driven, to purchase from or provide protection to local or inefficient suppliers.
    The NZ dairy industry feeds 40m people. Why should NZ farmers be penalised? If NZ disappeared overnight, those 40m people wouldn’t give up dairy. They would buy it from somewhere else, fed on subsidized grain and raised indoors, with no emissions penalties.

      Dairy/farming emissions should not even be taken into account – farming is a closed carbon cycle, and contributes nothing to so called ‘climate change/global warming’. Besides, methane is an unstable gas and breaks down into its gaseous components.         None of those things are free.
        The products that could potentially drop methane emissions, 1 is a seaweed derivative which has not been shown to work in pastoral systems, last I herd some NZ scientists were trying to get permission to do trials. The methane vaccines dont work yet, farmers mainly, but also some general tax payer funding will have sunk ~100mil into their development by 2025, hopefully they will work but its really hard to do, and again even if they do work, it is a product which has costs associated with it for its manufacture etc. that farmers will have to pay.
        The HME grass, unless the Nats are going to remove the ban on genetic engineering then they are a non starter. There are some trials on it in the US currently, the only ones we have in NZ are in PC3 labs, I wont disclose where due to vandalised NZ GE projects having been vandalised in the past. I dont know a lot about the dung Beatles, but I dont see how they can help mitigate methane emissions from pastoral grazed animals.
        
        All of this stuff in its development phase costs the tax payer and the economy, and once it is a working product, it costs everyone, i.e. the economy, because those resources could have been spent on something else more useful. The same goes for the carpet, if it is enforced that people can no longer buy cheap carpet, or the one they want, prices go up.
        
        Never trust a polly that says you can have something for nothing.

        To you’re post below, as you will know if you are paying attention you will know i work in a large agri company, i know for a fact farms are itching to be allowed to use these products, you do know that farmers will spend to keep up their product? , they often plant new grasses, so that is a cost anyway, its time we except a scientific approach or stick with the idiotic leftie charging to make no bloody difference.
        Nicola Grigg who is already a much loved MP is Selwyn, she has lots of support for scientific work to help get emissions down, same with Megan Hands in the neighboring seat of Rangitata who will be an MP in a year if she is chosen to stand

    I could actually understand the agriculture argument if we were not paying anything on the fossil fuels burned here. But it makes no sense to be including both exports and imports as costs in the ETS. If milk/meat etc is to be priced here, oil/coal etc should not be (except for the small amount of coal we mine). If we want to charge ETS on fossil fuels, then the people eating the burgers should be paying the ETS on the cows.. With Ag in we will be subsidising other countries.

        I really dont get this: unless you think Act will both not win epsom, and not get 5% of the party vote, voting ACT is not splitting the vote in any way that will advantage Labour. New Conservatives, sure the argument holds, but not with ACT, unless you have a really good reason to think they will not get into parliament.
        
        There is one other option, and that is you think people will electorate vote Nats and party vote labour to the extent that an overhang is created, but even then, im not sure voting ACT rather than Nats would have any impact on the overall right seat total.

    The idea is to pull the centre in your own party’s direction, not have the centre pull the party towards it.
    
    By definition, the centre doesn’t have any firm political values. The reason why the centre has gone so far to the left for 50 years (whereby holding the views of a mid-20th century conservative makes you a far right extremist) is because the left have pulled the centre to the left. None of their radical views were in any way popular until they made them popular (or at least, ostensibly popular). The trouble National have is that they don’t actually believe anything as a matter of principle, so they have nothing with which to pull the centre towards them. They are really political prostitutes who seem to exist to seek and maintain comfortable positions in the political milieu. They are passive and submissive followers, not leaders. The result is that they have to appeal to political agnostics who go whichever way the wind blows, and in so doing, they alienate right wing voters like myself. A degenerate mob rule ensues.

      Bang on. I’ve discovered, with the clarity provided by the covid situation, that conservatism doesn’t agree with me. It seems to stand for nothing. Or at least the National Party version does. I made this point on here and someone replied that I was wrong because National are actually socialists in disguise. I think we’re both right – Nationals conservatism CAUSES it to be socialist because the left has been successful in shifting the centre in their direction and National is scared to rock the boat. I agree there needs to be a strong counter movement, in its absence we will continue drifting into this nightmarish left wing social experiment. The same counter force needs to be applied to the public service. Without Douglas style restructuring and downsizing it will continue its relentless mission creep and ideological entrenchment. People say Douglas, Thatcher etc were too brutal in their reforms, but they will never know just how self serving and massive the public service would have become if they didn’t intervene. Observing at close quarters how rotten and self serving our public service has become in a benign environment I’ve concluded that periodic kicks in the butt are needed to keep them honest.

Here’s an interesting development on a current matter – that Te Papa’s wharenui, Te Hau-ki-Turanga, is stolen, that the theft caused and still causes great hurt and that all concerned are now negotiating the wharenui’s return to it’s ‘rightful owners’.

An elderly amateur-historian aunt wrote to me and others in our family yesterday:

“In “Papers Past” there is an article from the Evening Post on 31st July 1936 about Te Hau-ki-Turanga. Mr W J Phillipps of the Dominion Museum staff compiled the history of this wharenui which states that at a gathering with Maori on the East Coast, J Richmond asked if the Government could purchase the wharenui which was standing abandoned in the vicinity. All the meeting consented to the purchase, with one exception. £150 was paid from a ”military chest.” The House of Representatives afterwards voted £300 to satisfy further claims. Some of the building and carvings had decayed and were replaced by Jacob Heberley.

W J Phillipps was my mother’s cousin, and gave many lectures, radio talks and wrote books about Maori arts, handicrafts, tattoo designs, carvings and customs.

So, according to the W J Phillipps historical research, rather than “the stolen wharenui” descriptor, a better narrative would be “the abandoned wharenui sold by the local Maori.” Te Hau-ki-Turanga was carefully restored at the purchaser’s cost, and maintained, protected and publicly displayed for one and a half centuries to honour Maori culture, traditions and craftsmanship.”

So, according to this evidence, not stolen rather abandoned and willingly sold.

This, above, has also been sent as a letter to the Stuff editor and in response to Bronte Metekingi’s Stuff piece.

It will be interesting to see what transpires as a result, if anything.

    It’s funny though, like with crime, how it’s sometimes the small things that get them caught.
    
    Many, if not most, people will get far more wound up over $10k than $150bn.
    
    People can’t relate to $150bn being pissed down a hole on CV19, or $500M being spent to do something with gangs. Hundreds of millions and billions are not amounts they can relate to. Billions don’t really exist in most people’s world.
    
    But $10k: that’s real money! That’s two or three month’s wages for many people. That’s a decent second-hand car. That’s groceries for 6 months.
    
    It is easy for people to think “the bastards took that money from us and made two stupid signs. I could have paid 5 months’ rent with that.”
    
    That is why picking your battles is important. Got to pick things that people can relate to and triggers the lizard brain.

  Many years ago now, I drove from Stockholm to Norrkoping in the early hours of the morning (just after midnight). 4 lane highway all the way (about 150 km) of excellent quality. No speed cameras but plenty of police patrols, even though the traffic was pretty light.

        Oh don’t get me wrong, Batman – I don’t want a motorway any closer to my home than one currently is. Although the roads in my area (a semi-rural area in Rodney) are pretty poorly maintained, they are relatively quiet, which means no traffic jams or holdups until I get into the nearest town.
        
        My point is that, like cas, I live in an area where is no public transport. I don’t have a choice as to how many days a week I could use public transport, because there quite simply is none. I have to use a car.
        
        Sure, AT could put in more bus stops, but because of where I live I very much doubt they will. At a stretch, the absolute nearest I could envision AT possibly putting a bus stop in would be within 10 km of my home. Maybe. There is simply no way public transport will ever come closer to my home.
        
        And this is where I agree with your last sentence – we have to be somewhat balanced. There are people for whom public transport is readily and easily available, it is convenient, it works. Good for them. But there are also people like myself and cas who simply can not use public transport but the option isn’t there.

      You guys are all so hung up on Auckland. 😉 Here in rural land, 6km out of a major city, there is no public transport. 40 years ago there was a bus that went to town in a Tuesday. That stopped years ago and we’ve had nothing since. So at the least we have to drive to the nearest suburb, put some money in the parking meter, catch the bus into the CBD and hope we can catch a bus back out before the meter runs out. To add insult to injury, some little s…to have frightened the bus drivers from stopping at the transport hub. Security is there, but toothless. And not only that, our rural road is way too narrow and dangerous to ride a bike to town.

      My point is that parts of outer Auckland should actually have it, despite the claims that it doesn’t work for every trip. It isn’t designed to. It is intended for a set of trips such as city commuting and shopping.

  Who is going to spend 4 hours a day traveling to do an 8 hour job?

  I think the point of better public transport (and, for that matter, better footpaths and cycleways to go with it) is to get those who could use them doing so.
  That frees up road space for those who can’t – like people who live too far away from public transport, or work outside its hours, or commercial traffic like plumbers, couriers, and those big truck and trailer units full of whatever it is they’re hauling.

        My comment should not be taken as a refer to to New York, as per AoRs trolly reply, or to infer that Alabama is a blue state in waiting.
        
        Gerrymandering has meant that primary voters, themselves a small subset of all voters, i.e. the most committed and motivated party activists, have outsized power when it comes to launching primary challenges. Because the general races themselves are not competitive due to gerrymandering, you get a negative effect whereby the main motivator is pleasing the hardcore base instead of the general electorate (because you don’t need to).
        
        Hence you get people like AOC, Madison Cawthorn, MTG etc. They’re all products of primary challenges from the fringes in gerrymandered districts.

        First, I have never called myself “Kea.” Besides, pointing out that I have used several previous pseudonyms is not an argument, no matter how much you wish it was. You seem hung up on this point.
        
        Second, I don’t care if they come to America for a better life. How is that anything to do with the American people? If we are concerned about better lives, then Americans would probably have better lives if illegal peasants weren’t flooding into their country. If I want a better house, can I just come onto someone else’s property and move in? I wouldn’t have thought so. At the very least I’d have to ask, and I would fully expect to be declined (it’s not my house, after all).
        
        Third, they arrive at the border and are waved in, prior to being let loose, or bussed or flown to various destinations around America – if that isn’t being “brought in” then I don’t know what is.
        
        Fourth, “it’s a ringing endorsement of freedom and capitalism”. No, it’s a ringing endorsement of encouraging flagrant illegality. Can’t they stay in their own countries and develop freedom and capitalism? No they obviously can’t. They’ve shown that they are relatively incapable of doing so, otherwise they wouldn’t have to move to the US to benefit from that country’s legacy.
        
        All of these are very good grounds for concluding that, rather than my well-thought out case, your inept “feel good” endorsement of illegal third world immigration is what is “insane.”

        Hey Vino, I think the answer is a proper distracting law which mandates nonpartisan distracting commissions in every state, and prohibits the kind of stuff we see where Governors draw maps and eliminate entire districts.
        
        Constitutional purists will twist their knickers over it but the reality is that the democratic function will cease to work unless gerrymandering is eliminated.
        
        At least with commissions you can preserve each state drawing its own districts. They will just have to ‘colour within the lines rather than draw some of the insane districts we see currently

    Most people are totally losing their s#!t over the possible Roe vs Wade decision. All this decision does is rule that abortion is not a constitutional right and the Federal Government can’t force the states to have pro-abortion legislation. In reality most states will probably see very little change in their abortion legislation except possibly some restrictions on the more radical, late term abortion laws more recently implemented.
    As a Federal Republic the USA constitution allows that any subject that isn’t defined as under the purview of the Federal Government is by default the responsibility of the State. Roe vs Wade essentially forced states to submit to the Whitehouse in a matter that was never the responsibility of the Fed to enforce, and that many in the US still believe should be the right of individual states to legislate on. The latest opinion piece essentially gives this right back to the states.

The NZ designer kids store is selling puffer jackets filled with recycled plastic bottles as an alternative to duck down. Overseas “save the duck coats” are winning environmental awards! If only there was some warm sustainable product that came from the animals without harming them and that they could keep growing year after year.   Regardless of your views on the man himself, it is a travesty that a case like this has taken > 10yrs to decide and is real proof that the legal system has massively different outcomes if you are rich.

    I don’t think they should have admitted him in the first instance.
    
    However, now that they did, I don’t want the US to get their hands on him. In some ways the US has a very backward and draconian legal system. And, they use their size to bully smaller nations.
    
    I don’t really think Dotcom has done all that much wrong with respect to megaupload. Megaupload would eventually have evolved into what “Mega” is today. Do we hold the original youtube developers criminally responsible for the masses of illegal content that they have hosted over the years?

  As an aside, do you see escalating conflict (like lawsuits etc) between the tribes that are on the “in” and those that are on the “out”? I cant really see that the likes of Mahuta and Jackson are going to share their power with tribes outside of their favoured few.   The National Government in the 70/80s used a padded out public service as a means of soaking up the unemployed.
  The state service ballooned out to 1/3 of the work force. These days it’s about half that.

    and look at what had to happen to fix the problems that caused. Its also more convoluted than it used to be, for example the old DSIR is now a conglomeration of CRIs which I doubt count as public service, and to be fair some should be, and some shouldn’t. The same could be said for the New Zealand Electricity Department which is now a conglomeration of full or part state owned enterprises etc. and again some parts should be considered state service and some shouldnt.

  They called me to ask why and got very screechy when I said they had become corrupt by accepting and encouraging sponsorship and that they had become left-wing political. I was very pleasant.
