Some people think that I am joking but it’s actually true. I was alerted to this on the radio as I drove to work this very morning. We need to understand that now that the government knows they can control us, they will remember this and will be very tempted to do it again. This is what doing it again looks like. If they locked you down once, made you take a medication that you may or may not have wanted and told you what to do through government messaging every hour of every day, it is very hard for them to give this up. So they are not giving it up.

      Probably not, why should we. I believe it’s our right to be addressed in the language of our choice, which in my case in English. If you want me to understand you please provide an English version. This is particularly true since you appear to have chosen to participate in a forum where the majority of the users clearly communicate in English.

        You illustrate the problem with the current fad for Menglish. It contains sufficient Maori not to be clearly understood by English speakers, but not enough Maori to be understood by any Maori speaker not already fluent in English.

  The Civil Defense trial is actually on Sunday 22nd May.
  It’s between 6.00pm and 7.00pm to mobiles capable of receiving the signal.
  There’s no pressure on you to listen to or answer your phone.
  
  I live in a coastal area in Canterbury.
  Personally I would like to think there is a working warning system in place for earthquakes, water purity or tsunamis.

Funny how it was undamaged in the Kaikoura earthquake when a number of other buildings were written off.
Is it about to fall down or is this a case of engineers looking for a gravy train?

  Yup. Earthquake assessments have been described as a ‘dark art’. I know of one significant public building that was given a big fail by the assessing consultant. When the Structural consultant came along to put together a structural plan, they looked at it and thought it should have a much higher rating. Got a second assessment done and had both peer reviewed. Sure enough $3m to fix rather than $36m.

  No. But in the light of recent instances of engineering design issues, professional engineers need to take great care and must err on the side of caution. Imagine if the engineer had given the building an overly optimistic rating, then the building failed in a subsequent earthquake resulting in loss of life (that building is occupied by patients and staff 24/7. As a previous boss of mine mentioned, the test in such a case is to imagine you are in court (or inquiry) having to explain your actions of lack of to the Judge.
  Anyway there is quite enough earthquake remediation work to be done on buildings to keep engineers and builders busy for years to come – so there is no incentive to unnecessarily classify buildings as a risk. This is quite apart from this being a serious breach of professional standards.
  Also the final decision was taken by the DHB and depending on the assigned % figure and other circumstances the DHB could well have decided the building was OK, but the DHB decided otherwise and that decision seems soundly based.

    Just hire engineers close to retirement. More likely to give a realistic assessment, and in absence of fear for reputational impact on their careers decades from now if a black swan were to occur, they’ll be less inclined to arse-covering over-estimation of dangers.

    Y own office building survived the first Chch quake and was passed by a top structural engineer.
    I was alerted to issues with the building by a passer by one day who was staring at it.
    He told me the walls were bowing .
    This was confirmed when my ground floor tenant left as her builder father said it was unsafe.
    He told me , inspire of its passing the structural test , that the bow in the walls meant very little of the floor plate was unsupported .
    I sent my staff to work from home.but stayed there myself .
    Went for a coffee around the corner. Waited 40 minutes for it . Turned out there’d forgotten me and then the second quake happened.
    Returned to my building to see a pile of rubble.
    Two things I took from this , engineers aren’t always right and cafe staff stuffups can save your life.
    The owner of the cafe later gave me free coffees

  Unfortunately, Ross, the government and all its agencies have created a degree of mistrust in the general population in recent years.
  Civil defence warnings are one thing, but if the announcements should start to demand certain actions on a national scale, we are heading down a steep slope to North Korea-like population control.

  1. There are buildings in wellington built in about 1885, that are still standing. Declared unsafe years ago, after surviving many earthquakes before and after the declaration.

So a man who was accidentally shot in the back by an Armed Offenders Squad member was awarded a paltry $20,000. Now it needs to be remembered that while the Crown has to meet his legal costs, such cost awards are generally only 50% to 70% or so of the costs the vindicated party actually incurs (a 100% cost award is possible but extremely rare). This means he will be lucky to get $10,000 of that $20,000 and indeed could even be out of pocket. The man has mental health issues and his behaviour was the reason for the callout.

The Officer was acquitted of careless use of a firearm but given the circumstances I cannot think why. His (presumably) Police Association lawyer seemed to have baffled the jury with a load of BS.
An investigation by the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) in 2015 outlined numerous failings in the officer’s use of the firearm and found he had been careless.

In the circumstances I think the award was disgraceful. It should have been at least $50,000. In Baigent’s case the Police had $20,000 awarded against them for insisting on continuing a search after they realised they had the wrong house. But that was almost trivial in seriousness compared with the shooting case.

If Jacinda really wants to show kindness then she should ask Cabinet to approve a meaningful payout for that victim.

  Bill of Rights damages are to vindicate the right rather than punish the Crown or compensate the victim, and the awards have typically been modest. That said, I am surprised they seem to have moved so little since Baigent’s case. Back then, 20k would have been a good deposit on a house. Nowadays?

    Even without the Bill of Rights Act the victim significant harm because of negligence (by those who should have known better). The H&S Act allows significant compensation payouts to employees and others injured in workplace accidents. The compensation he received should have been on a par with H&S awards especially as the scene of the accidental shooting was effectively a Police workplace.

  In the military, and it should be with the cops too, weapons control is paramount. An accidental discharge is considered a very serious offence – worse than a deliberate discharge of a firearm.
  
  Firearms do not have undo buttons and sloppy firearms control cannot be tolerated. “oops” is not good enough.
  
  Anecdote time: a fellow student of mine had been in the Rhodesian Army. He was standing guard at a small base in the bush and they were all a bit bush-crazy. A hornbill landed on a nearby tree and he decided to shoot it. He missed, but soon found himself dragged in front of the CO.
  
  He told that he had tried to shoot a hornbill, but since he couldn’t produce a dead hornbill it was ruled an accidental discharge.
  
  The ruling mattered because if it had been a deliberate, controlled, shot then he would maybe have lost mess privileges for a day or two (no beer for two nights). An AD is considered negligence and earned him 2 weeks in detention barracks.

  What the heck! So the Solicitor-General will argue that Vodafone should be hit for more but will desperately fight or minimise any claims brought against Government agencies.
  Now the Government has this $2.25m in the bag, it should be a simple matter to let the victim of the shooting have the fractional part ie $0.25M.

Some facts about emissions announcements and farmers.

1. Farmers are not off the hook. The taxes that will be imposed will be announce over the next few weeks. They will be severe.
2. The millions announced on Monday for research cannot be utilised. We do not have enough scientists or facilities. It was unnecessary.
3. Farmers do not produce “half of our emissions”. In a situation where emissions are falling the measurement system must be adapted accordingly.
4. Ruminant emissions are falling steadily. They have been for 15 years. The Climate Change Commission made that clear.
5. Some leading IPCC authors including several NZ scientists say clearly that in NZ’s case the 48% is 400% overstated.
6. Methane lasts 9 to 10 years in the atmosphere so in a situation where levels are falling in NZ farmers are actually contributing to cooling – literally.
7. The Paris Agreement states no penalising food producers – Article 2 (b)
8. NZ’s cutbacks will be replaced by farmers in other countries who have a higher carbon footprint. That’s stupid.
9. Farmers through their representatives have agreed to being taxed at a high level even though they have reservations about the end result.

The Govt as usual has pulled a PR stunt. Making farmers look greedy and uncommitted. Very underhanded and corrupt.

  New Zealand does not like farmers, but has (or had once) a grudging respect for primary production – only because it had to.
  Many people do not see the connection between the two.
  Farming “representatives” through their voluntary membership orgs, are more intent on pleasing the Labour Party government than they are on advocating for their members.
  Two people in our household were awarded life membership of rural/farming based orgs. Very disappointed at how those orgs have shifted their focus away from members and on to appeasing the government.

    I think you mean Compulsory Levy funded organisations, the ones the that are funded by member subscriptions are more in tune with their membership.
    Incidentally I understand a full third of dairy farms north of the harbour bridge have pulled the pin on dairy in the last 5 years, that’s a startling achievement by this Government when dairy prices are breaking records.

        Yeah, we’re talking about some of the region’s best soils and contour with millions in infrastructure going to beef, lifestyle, and horticulture.
        The marginal beef areas are going to permanent forest that will bring no income to the region.
        The honey industry is overstocked and the idea of planting manuka seems to have gone out of fashion. Plenty of feral land for dope growers still.

        Since the likes of Gerry Brownlie threw Federated Farmers representatives out of his office over issues with transmission lines, and other ministers in Key’s first government wouldn’t take calls from Federated Farmers reps there was a conscious decision not to offend the precious egos of our illustrious representatives in Government.
        The deficiencies of the ETS and the leaky canoe are the subject of a lot of heated debate right now in Federated Farmers.

    Urban people have always hated farmers since I can remember back in the 1970’s when I was going to college. People kept telling me all farmers are rich and just drive around on their bikes all day having fun.
    My nephew’s teachers taught him that farming is not the industry to get into and how nasty and toxic farmers are. Charming. This was in the eighties and nineties. I worked at a research institute where the scientists worked to better farming outcomes, but hated farmers. Go figure. Farmers these days shut up about what the job they do, this is how bad it has become. Labour governments have always hated farmers, I mean really hate them. Teachers especially.

  Just one example of the fall in emissions from farming since 1990.
  Since 1980 Sheep numbers have fallen from 72 million to 23 million .
  They are still falling as successive governments regulate farming out of business .
  Encouraging and subsidising forestry at the expense of farmers is now the norm.
  And the crisis point has been reached.
  Who knows NZ is now a nett importer of pork for example!
  Farmers have reduced their emissions far more than any other sector already!

    Regulation changes made it illegal to farm pork economically in NZ (restricted number of piglets a sow could have per year and how they are housed) – so now we import most pork from places that allow more efficient production.
    
    Net result:
    -Pigs that we eat are being raised using same intensive systems as previous, just in other countries.
    -We pay twice as much for pork sausages etc as Brits.
    -Pork is one of most efficient meats to produce requiring only 40% of feed that a sheep does, or a quarter of what beef does, better for environment for people to eat more pork and less beef.
    -We’re importing farmed goods that NZ could produce more efficiently and cheaper with less environmental impact if regulations allowed. Wasting overseas revenue, wasting employment opportunities, wasting fuel etc on international packaging and transport inefficiencies.

• SIS ?

The SIS may in fact be a self-initiator (or should be) but do all the other agencies need a complaint to act on?

And if Te Pāti Māori genuinely believe, or have evidence, that their democratic rights are being thwarted, their efforts to correct their own situation must reflect what use their party would actually be in Parliament, particularly in perhaps unholding any other persons’ rights?

The news that Police are targeting restaurants who offer bottomless brunches whilst violent crime, gang violence and ram raids carry on unabated shows how out of whack Police are w ith everyday Kiwis.

Poto Williams either needs to bring the Police hierarchy into line, or step down and give the job to someone who will. At the moment her apathy towards serious crime and her continued denial that gang tensions are making New Zealanders feel unsafe is an indictment on her tenure of the portfolio.

      Sorry, selling alcohol at a discounted price is not illegal or a breach of a licence. Licencing Authorities do mot set prices.
      
      If customers on leaving restaurants are committing illegal acts or engaging in behaviour that is commonly called anti-social, that is the beginning and end of the police’s remit.
      
      If the police have a problem with restaurants etc and the way they conduct business, then they have every right to appeal/object to the Licencing Authority. They do not have a right to target restaurants, because they don’t want to deal with people who over indulge.

        While you are partly correct, it is: “against the law for a licensee or their staff to sell alcohol to anyone who is intoxicated, to allow a person to become intoxicated”.
        If the police can show that the bottomless brunch is resulting in people becoming intoxicated then they are breaching the conditions of their license.
        It sounds a bit like they are treating this a bit like serving alcohol to minors, where they deliberately send minors into pubs to order drinks, then ping them if it works. I know this is (was) being done because I worked with someone who’s wife was a licensing enforcement officer and she asked me if my under aged daughter was interested in being on their minors team.

My prediction on Andrew Little’s health reforms is that they will provide a prescient test case of what a cluster fuck cogovernance is going to be.
These reforms are planned to go live on 1 July. The best case scenario for Little will be that he will be forced to postpone this.
So far the prognosis for the patient is not looking good. Ashley Bloomfield and his two best lieutenants have wisely bailed. I understand that the DHB’s still have no idea what is going to happen. The level of complexity required to seperate Maori patients out in an already complex system will be mind boggling.
Based on this government’s lousy record of being unable to implement anything the whole project will turn into custard. It would be a laughing stock if not for the deadly consequences that will result for some patients.

Stats NZ has the Maori population currently at 875,000. Just under 273,000 people are on the Maori electoral roll. Even given their younger age profile, it would seem there are many “useless Maori” out there. Willie has much work to do.

Mathew Tukaki is a regular media spokesperson described as Chair of the Maori Authority. The Maori Authority is a charity. The charities revenue for the last three years has been $4, $2, and $1. The financials for charities usually require a statement of the entities structure and it’s outcomes for the years. But that doesn’t appear to be recorded.     Newsroom had a good piece on it a few days ago.
    
    Apparently, and allegedly, and according to the article, after being chucked out of the Maori Council (apparently another fascinating story in its own right!), he signed a contract, he may not have had the power to sign (being no longer an office holder), that transferred a $950k contract to a new body, the Maori Authority, which he just happened to have set up, and just happened to be the Chair of.
    
    Quite a set of coincidences really.
    
    Mr Tukaki is also getting a reputation as the man to turn to if the government needs to have a “independent, yet responsible maori leader ™” speak in its defence, on pretty much any topic.

  The Herald disinformation article is makes sweeping claims based on research from “The Disinformation Project.” While the Disinformation Project like to take the moral high road their own website contains no detail about their organisations legal framework, who funds them or who they are linked to. Their director is spinoff writer Kate Hannah.
  
  They say they “We produce publicly available research, sensitive reporting, media commentary, and resourcing for civil society seeking to respond to information disorders, and growing offline consequences, in their communities.” Do they do this for free and are not linked to anyone else?
  
  Because when you click on the actual “research paper” the logo is Te Puna Matatini a research centre hosted by University of Auckland and a collective of other universities. Were Te Puna paid to do this social media listening? Is this who received the government’s social listening funding? Remembering the government has refused to release the social listening reports? And now this “research” is being used to claim dangerous talk online as the govt works on it’s hate speech laws.
  
  The quality of the paper is also bizarre. The research amounts to looking at social media. There is no clear method, examples or data. Almost entirely long bows and reckons.

I saw a little promotion from Auckland Transport pop up on my Facebook feed this morning. It started off with:

Whakamihi Conifer Grove, Takaanini and Papakura, you’ve made nearly 10,000 trips on AT Local! To celebrate, we’re giving the person who books the 10,000th AT Local trip $100 of AT HOP credit.

I wonder how many people would know what “whakamihi” means without looking it up? I checked it out and discovered it means “to praise, pay tribute to, congratulate, eulogise, greet, thank, commend, acclaim, compliment, acknowledge”. Great – so right now I know what “whakamihi” means. So as Batman or Mcos would no doubt say, that’s one more Maori word I’ve now learned, right? Well, no.

Let’s be honest, the chances I’m going to use “whakamihi” instead of “congratulations” in everyday conversations are pretty remote. Why would I? None of my friends wwill know what it means, so using “whakamihi” would detract from the occasion if I was actually congratulating somebody for an achievement. And the less I use a word, the less I will remember it. Our brains find it easier to retrieve words that we use frequently than rarely used words. That’s just common sense. Even words that we do know but use rarely have been shown to cause “tip-of-the-tongue” experiences in studies.

Our media, city councils, Government departments, and affiliated organisations are, as we know, using Maori language more and more – in many cases, presumably having been directed to by their political masters. The Crown’s Maori Language Strategy has set some pretty optimistic goals, such as having one million Kiwis speaking Maori by 2040. Nanaia Mahuta dreams of a future where Maori is spoken by children as they play, by you and I as we work, in the sporting arenas and shopping malls, where you will be able to sit down at any restaurant in New Zealand and order a meal in te reo Māori, or rock up to Bunnings and happily chat away to the staff in Maori as you discuss the merits of the various hammer drills on offer.

I just can’t see it happening. No matter how many times I see the word “whakamihi” being used in a crude attempt to normalise it, I’m still going to stick with “congratulations”. And sorry Simon Dallow; it doesn’t matter how often you refer to Otautahi, I’m still going to call it Christchurch. Not because I’m being a stubborn prat but quite simply because those are the words and names I know and so does everybody else. Communication fails when you get a confused stare from the person you’re talking to because they don’t understand what on earth you just said.

Personally, I’d recommend AT learn to get their English correct first – it’s Takanini, not “Takaanini”. Yes, that spelling error is a direct copy and paste from Facebook.

  I think Nanaia and her mates need to be very careful here – not that they’ll take a blind bit of notice though (there’s too much money and ‘legacy’ at stake).
  
  Briefly, English is the international language of commerce and will remain the default and most widely used language in New Zealand however far we look.
  
  There is no doubt in my mind that one of the most major causes of Maori under-achievement in NZ (and the one least talked about) is the appalling education they receive at our schools.
  
  Huge chunks of Maori school-leavers exit school early and with reading, writing and comprehension skills of kids much, much younger.
  
  What chance have they now got?
  
  If Maori kids have their English mastery further eroded by time and effort saturating themselves in all things Maori then where will that leave them?
  
  To me this is yet another example of something sounding great in theory but failing miserably in practice.
  
  (I would add for completeness that a Maori, or any kid, kid flying through their academic subjects who also takes on Maori language as an option will have my full support – but only with that proviso.)

  We had this ‘trialed’ in Devonport also. Ideally it was for getting people too and from the Ferry.
  The charge was $2.50 per ride but the true cost was around $41 per ride!
  Fucking Auckland Transport. Would be easier to allocate a couple of car parks at the Ferry to Uber and we wouldn’t need this blatant corporate welfare.

    And on another note, I see that contrary to my complaint about a spelling mistake, AT has decided to “correct” the spelling of Takanini to appease local Maori. To be honest, I don’t have a huge problem with that … if it was named after somebody and spelled incorrectly initially, then it makes sense to correct it. But as this was apparently done about four years ago, it goes to show that AT’s communications skills are somewhat lacking.

  Perhaps SOME Maori children will, in the future, speak the language of their ancestors as they play. Perhaps they will, if their parents use this language as a sole means of communication at home.
  Expecting that the people of non-Maori background will ever use Maori as their everyday’s language is unrealistic though, regardless of the current efforts. And not just unrealistic but simply and plainly stupid. It is not going to happen, no matter how much money is thrown at it.

    Having grown up in South Africa with English as a home language and Afrikaans as a second language I can confirm that the idea of getting everyone to use “your preferred language” is an exercise in futility. Most English speakers could hardly get by in Afrikaans after learning it for the better part of 6 years at school. At the same time, since English was the majority language, spoken is shops and businesses most of the time, most Afrikaans speakers became nearly equally fluent in both languages and ended up speaking English most of the time. For about 6 years of my working life I worked in one of the most Afrikaans areas of SA, at a company that was considered as Afrikaans as possible, but even here English was still spoken 95% of the time.

  A political reporter on Newstalkzb last Friday afternoon alluded to some juvenile spat between Williams, Mitchell and the MP who was the former Police union guy.
  This occurred in a bar in Parliament and was like a lot of kids squabbling about who sits at a table due to ‘safety” worries being suffered by Williams.

    a funny story – I was laughed at the other day when my late teen daughter had some of her mates around, most of whom like her are of mixed parentage – in their cases Euro/Maori and Euro/Pacific.
    
    They were openly talking about ‘Boonga Buses’ as a substitute for what I’d call a ‘people mover’ – I went red in the face and said “You can’t say that…” but they all laughed and said not to worry, they use that term all the time.

Have been reading about the problems in the Legal Aid System whereby the year to 30/6/21 the costs were $275 million up from $160 the year before.
They want more money for poor Lawyers of course.
Now a Legal Aid Grant is actually a loan, not a free lunch, so it they got off their arses they could get serious about the repayment of these loans and get more money back into the coffers.

The UN secretary general says “Hate speech is in itself an attack on tolerance, inclusion, diversity and the very essence of our human rights norms and principles. More broadly, it undermines social cohesion, erodes shared values, and can lay the foundation for violence, setting back the cause of peace, stability, sustainable development and the fulfillment of human rights for all.”

It is defined by the UN as any type of communication….that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language…with reference to a person or group on the basis of who they are, in other words based on religion, gender, nationality, race, colour “or any other identifying factor. This is often rooted in intolerance and generates hate. ” Yip Yip that is what it is.

So was calling people anti vax conspiracy theories hate speech. It certainly undermined shared values and social cohesion.

You just get the feeling that Elon Musk has been talking to Jack Dorsey, and via this purchase process and the required discovery, they are exposing to us in a subtle way the wheels that move Twitter behind the curtain.
We have learnt how Twitter in the current format can never be profitable, (the more individual users, the operating costs get higher not lower) so it must have govt funding from some source, and now he is forcing them to disclose the actual number of bots as opposed to real human users.
We are therefore being shown that Twitter is a US Intelligence funded propaganda tool, being used to promote favoured ideology as being mainstream thought, often through “made up” accounts.
Surely not!
Musk also gives a brilliant breakdown of what Tesla is, as a business model.
Don’t be late in getting onboard with how brilliant this guy is in the modern day world.

  A very interesting machine, but will it be commercially viable? I doubt it as the concept is not new; it has been tried before. Hydrofoils were in common use in the Baltic Sea in the 1970’s – very expensive to run and very sensitive to the weather. Same with ekranoplan experiments in the Caspian. This thing is not quite the same but similar weather constrictions will apply and a lot of power will be required for propulsion. Not mentioning traffic control factors…

An NZ Herald article sponsored by part of Labour’s bribing of the media celebrates the Maorification of Hamilton street names – replacing names marking settler figures such as von Tempsky.

The report says: the Kingitanga – the “Maori King movement” – and the Waikato Tainui tribe support rhe decision to rename Von Tempsky Street to Putikitiki Street and nearby Dawson Park to Te Wehenga Park.

That is obvious, but this report, sponsored by what Labour shamelessly called the “Local Democracy Reporting Project” spells out the obvious as if it could be news.

The tens of millions of “subsidies” for the project are portrayed by the Ardernists as providing coverage of courts and councils in the regions that otherwise would not be reported.

Another Ardern lie. It’s about pushing Labour’s political barrow, including racial separatism.

    Kazakhstan has been dithering over one of its two official languages, Kazakh (the other is Russian), with much buggering around with special printing characters (glyphs), just as Maori has adopted macrons.
    
    Kazakhstan changed its Kazakh-language alphabet from Cyrillic to Latin, and then changed it a second time because the Latinised version with apostrophes is difficult to use on computer keyboards.
    
    Kazakh Russian remains in Cyrillic, of course. The country has about 6.2 million Russian speakers compared with about 5.3 million Kazakh speakers.
    
    The awkwardness of using Kazakh is paralleled by the difficulty posed by Maori macrons in internet use. There’s no use having a macron in a web-site name. Few if any outside NZ will adapt their software for Maori macrons, and I haven’t seen a keyboard that depicts a macron on a key.
    
    In Maori, which doesn’t have a “z” in its alphabet, how would you show the internet suffix for New Zealand – “.nz”.
    
    Since you’re talking about members of the old Soviet Union, Milky, has anyone heard if Ukraine has considered changing from the Cyrillic alphabet to the Latin alphabet to distance itself from Russian?
    
    That would be a pity. Cyrillic suits Slavic languages. It’s a better fit than Latin adapted with special characters and glyphs as in Polish, Czech and Croatian.

      The Latin rite (Roman Catholic) was used to Christianize Poland, Czechia and Croatia hence the use of Latin alphabet in these countries. The Cyrillic was derived from the Glagolitic alphabet used in the Old Church Slavonic, which was based on the dialect used in the province of Thessalonica, where St Cyril and Methodius who christianized Kievan Rus came from.

We had to do this for our oldest, who has just started flatting at Uni. It is not like you even have a choice, because you do this or don’t get the flat.

    It would end gangs real quick (and reduce violent crime dramatically) if you took a testicle from any gang member or associate convicted of a crime. They aren’t afraid of prison, but they would be terrified of that.

Our company got sent a telegraphic transfer of funds from LaPalma, the Canary Islands. When viewing the TT it was heartening to see that the bank identified our country as “Nova Zelanda”, not “Aotearoa”.

  What these Aotearoans don’t realise is that if the name of NZ is changed they will have to
  
  Go through a really expensive marketing campaign so that the customers in all our markets know that the name has changed.
  
  All the computer systems like SWIFT will have to be changed and also electronic documentation such as Bills of Lading for cargo will have to be changed.
  
  Plus all the legal documentation and so on and so forth
