… and was sent home 7pm that night.

  IF there are no complications this is not abnormal.
  
  When my youngest was born 10 years ago, we were transferred from the Thames Birthing Centre down to Waikato hospital (an ambulance trip for my wife) as there were potential complications. after she was born (no actual complications) in the wee hours of the morning, they discharged us from Waikato hospital after about 2 hours and we had to drive back to the birthing centre in the Thames at about 3am (no ambulance this time).

      Back in 2001 it was 72 hours (AKL). You could stay longer but at your own cost. And that wasn’t enough for a first time Mum. Two hours is shameful. Thanks again Cindy. Another wreckage left behind.

  To be fair: back in 2000, when I was doing a stint at a very small rural hospital mothers would often go straight home after the delivery of the baby. They would be checked over by their midwife, and be visited every day for a week or so until they were settled.
  Back then, home deliveries were the thing, along with water births.

    Bloody weeks of bloody blood, uterine discharge and mucus and goodness only knows what else.
    
    Poor old hubby having to cart filthy, bloody knickers, nightgowns, dressing gowns, etc home to wash each day for the week I got in hospital with my 2 babes 30+ years ago.

  I hope that Nats take “learnings” from the Liberals defeat. IMHO apart from being the encumbent the Libs lost because they tried to be like Labor but said they would do it better. A portion of the voters didnt like Labors climate change policy but voted for them anyway.
  The Nats have got to attack climate change by pointing out how much it will cost an individual and a household each week and that NZ is two drops in a 2 litre bottle of milk as regards the global situation and in any case climate change is a scam and hoax designed to take money out of citizens pockets and put it into governments elites academics and consultants pockets.
  Its a rort and will be proved so. Its become a religion where to offer an alternative opinion is to invite personal attack like no other.
  In addition the Nats have to show how their policies will put more money in taxpayers pockets without increasing inflation……………………tax cuts.
  They also need to show how they will spend taxes. Alas all political parties crow about spending More but none talk about spending Wisely. Where is the evidenec of careful prudent financial management they type households demonstrate every day of the week. I dont and have never seen it. Just ‘we will spend $X more than them”.

    The greatest nonsense about NZ’s heavy economic commitment to “climate change” is that our emissions are but 0.16% of global emissions. In other words, only 16 thousandths of total global emissions.
    
    We could double, treble or go 10 times as much emissions without really affecting the scale, so why do we have the crazy idea that any efforts we make to reduce emissions EVEN REGISTER on the global scale – so why are we wasting money and stymieing so much in farming and industry?

      If 30 countries like ours all do similar, that’s a few percent. Then add more and more countries and suddenly you’re actively reducing emissions and pollution by noticeable volumes.

        Moving the problem overseas is not the solution. We need to actually reduce emmissions but in an intelligent manner than doesn’t bankrupt the country.

        All massively swamped by the output of China, India and the other developing nations for decades to come.
        
        A pointless and deeply painful mission of economic suicide.
        
        And all this distraction and waste for the reality that there is not a climate “crisis”. There is overwhelmingly natural climate change which we can only adapt to (try doing that without fossil fuels and you will face increasing deaths from storms/fires/floods etc etc. Fossil fuels provide resilience against the blows nature delivers!)
        The IR bands that Co2 “absorb” are now mostly saturated (providing just enough insulation to stop earth going fully frigid). From here on in you get about 1C increase in global temp per DOUBLING of Co2 in the atmosphere (alarmist cultists have fluffed that up to 3C upon discovering this massive flaw in their chicken little hypothesis). 97% of the Co2 in the atmosphere is NOT from human endeavours. Currently ALL Co2 in the atmosphere accounts for 0.04% of the total atmosphere. Put all this together and there is no good reason go on an economic and social suicide mission. People in the west are going to suffer horribly if they keep chasing this over-hyped fool’s errand.

    I’m not sure the analysis on the defeat by some people is particularly sound. Many National voters ‘get’ issues like managing the economy and understand logic over ‘feelz’. Unfortunately, many middle voters do not. Many (women 30-50 in particular) voted against the libs simply because they hate Morrison.
    
    A friend told me she overheard a woman at her work saying she was going to vote Jacinda in 2020 simply because she ‘loves her hair’. Luxon needs to win the middle and he is heading in the right direction. Some of it is not ‘logical’ to us but it needs to be done. Note how often Ardern uses emotive language – it attracts a special kind of voter. Logic and business sense alone will not an election win.

        Not at all -I’m saying you need to also harvest ‘feelz’ and appeal to the middle with centrist policies. Labour presented no policies for the (let’s not make it political) Covid election and won. Albanese also presented virtually no policies. Logical and better policies will not win – especially if they cannot be advertised by a hostile media. Kiwibloggers are interested in policies – most people are not, nor do they research them.
        
        Remember that National only has 4 Press secretaries in total. The PM has more than that alone, and each Minister gets one as well. The public service has grown to over 500 ‘PR spinners’ (public sector communications roles -more than there are journalists). National are also fighting the media party who are hell bent on holding the opposition to account not the government!!
        
        National must choose which battles to fight, which can be neutralised and when not to interfere when an enemy is making mistakes.
        
        At least the finance minister has an inkling of who will be the next government. He has pre-spent $2B from budget 2023 and $.4B on top of the extra $6B operating expenditure uplift!!. He’s robbing the future cupboards!! Only smart of the opposition will be in power!!

  Those who have been watching US politics closely, have seen the lies years before they emerge in media. Just watch the Senate and Congress hearings and White House confirmations live and in full to have your eyes opened & understand where the truth lies.
  Think back to the attempted impeachment of Trump over the Ukraine phone call and the phony witnesses bought in one after another. This is what the cry for support for Ukraine is all about, covering up the huge recent corruption by US elites through money laundering, arms deals, energy deals, political interference etc, all at the expense of the US taxpayers.
  You know why Mahuta never spoke to the NZ Russian ambassador before we sent funds to support Ukraine – she already knew the whole thing was a US construct and facts were of no consequence to us – i.e. no point.
  The reason why there is no balance of perspective is the modern journalists. This generation of journalists have lost their audience, they see themselves and everyone else as oppressed minorities, and they are now simply manipulated political activists.
  You have to search blogs, podcasts, etc for real journalism – hint, the good ones are typically over 50 yrs of age.

  Poto Williams is way out of her intellectual depth in the position she is in Tony (like pretty much all of the Labour Cabinet Ministers). She has a limited idea of what is going on, no idea how to fix any problems that might come her way, and not enough horsepower in intelligence wise to find her way through the myriad of papers crossing her desk that encapsulate the issues and suggest interventions and solutions.     Heard Megan Woods say they issue is all around funding of police and that National underfunded. This is just so wrong and the problem with most labour policy. If funding by itself fixed things, than our hospital wait lists would be reducing rather than increasing, for example.
    
    The problem with gangs is not the funding of police but the narrative from the govt and police around crime and the policy framework. Why else would violent crime be rising so fast under labours ‘funded police’ vs the previous National ‘un funded police’

  Benedict – quite agree. It seems the modern academic is ashamed of colonialism and hence Queen Victoria is to be minimised. They want to call themselves Wellington, which itself comes from the Duke of Wellington, so still colonial I would have said. But I suspect they really really want to call themselves the Maori name they have made up for themselves, Te Herenga Waka, which is translated as “mooring place of canoes”.
  
  I think it’s a shame that modern academics don’t really like Western civilisation and really really like Maori civilisation, such as it was. The concept of the University comes from Western civilisation. Maori society had no such concepts. Indeed their knowledge was passed on orally as they had no written language.
  
  Personally I hope that the modern academic does not get away with it and a future government directs them to use Victoria University as their only name. While we’re at it I would like the Ministry of transport to return to being the Ministry of transport and housing New Zealand to return to being Housing New Zealand. But that’s just me. It’s FDA approved and used elsewhere in the world, and it can detect flu as well as Covid.

Sir Ian Taylor wants to bring them into NZ and use them at work “to look after [his] staff in a way that [he] believe meets [his] responsibilities under the Health & Safety Act.”

Is anyone surprised to learn that, five months after he told Ministers about these tests, Customs has confiscated them at the border and the government is only just beginning “testing”?

That’s just ridiculous, John key was the most recent PM before JA so its hardly a long time. Could have been written ‘JA finally likes the politics of an American President enough to meet with him’.
  
  The idea that NZ gets ANY tourism or promotion through our PM visiting a country is a joke. When the Indian PM visits NZ do we all think, I must visit India or I must buy some Indian products?

It is such a pity that folks know so little of NZ’s natural history that they leap to “Climate change” as the explanation for natural events.

    Nothing that has happened in the last 100 or so years (allegedly when Co2 produced by human endeavours could in any way influence the climate) is “unprecedented”. Not sea level rise, not floods, not fires, not droughts and not storms, not temperature increase and not the rate of increase. This is easily proven by ice core records (both Greenland and Antarctica) going back hundreds of thousands of years, lake bed sediments, sea floor sediments and the geological record. All they’ve got is Co2 level rise is “unprecedented” in x thousands of years. But Co2 can only insulate the planet significantly up to a certain point. Beyond that point it’s effect declines in logarithmic fashion (it’s effect is approx 1C average global temp increase per DOUBLING of total Co2 in the atmosphere). It’s not a biggy and certainly not worth destroying national economies for! The climate will do what it wants. Co2 is not the master control knob (nor even a significant one).

        It is perfectly factually correct to say it’s a concern that if sea temps rise then food species will change or die and other species will suffer as a result.
        
        As if coral bleaching in Fiordland and massive scale bleeching on the Great Barrier Reef wasn’t impartial proof of warmer temps… The coral don’t have a political agenda, just a temperature based response.

        I think you will also find that worldwide observations of sponge bleaching have only been reported in the last few years, and the episodes are not necessarily connected with sea temperature changes.

        It’s highly desirable to resolve it and it can be resolved without destroying economies (unlike the proposed wholesale switch to low density unreliable generation methods advocated by climate alarmists). As I understand it, most of the deaths in the world from that are due to indoor pollution (poor people burning dung or garbage indoors on open fires). Remember Britain had “pea soup” smog as late as the 1960s and the US major cities had major smog problems up until the 1970s. That was fixed at relatively low cost by using scrubbers on power plant chimney’s and installing catalytic converters on cars. I believe China and India are getting around to cleaning up the particulates from their coal plants.
        
        You won’t resolve that stuff in the developing world by trying to force unaffordable energy (IE intermittent wind and solar with it’s need for additional expensive hydro/nuke/fossil fuel backup and storage) on them. Installing an affordable (gas, coal with scrubbers, or hydro) electric power grid will. This will enable more productive and efficient industries to grow there so people can earn more money and afford much cleaner cooking and lighting appliances.

On questioning the absence of some things.

Was informed.
Information older than 10 years are in “”bulk storage”” (My words)
Paper forms/notes/reports have only been scanned in to the system since 2013…..

Recordings of telephone calls are only held for 90 days.

My conspiracy theory.
Especially with MSD..(re my pension)
they strongly promote – phone us for advice etc etc.

Huh! Means they are off the hook for anything they say after 90 days……

Of course in reverse. They cant deny anything they said after 90 days.

Ie I was advised 6 months ago that blah blah blah.

Credible research suggests that the time successive vaccinations are effective is reducing sharply.
So would be have acted as we did if we had these facts at the time.
Is there any proof that outcomes would have been that much worse if we had take personal responsibility.
What did we get for our 39 changes to Alert Levels and subsequent Traffic Lights. At what cost.

    last night we were watching a programme on 1000 years of History – Russia- and several interviewees were from Chatham House. While we had heard of the Chatham House rule, we hadn’t heard of Chatham House so looked it up. It is an independent policy institute to provide authoritative commentary on world events and offer solutions to global problems. And lo and behold one of its 3 Presidents is out dear H1 Helen Clark.   Obviously not you if you believe an agenda driven article like that blaming all the problems on organic farming.
  Sri Lanka’s problems are far more complexed and long standing ranging from the corrupt political dynasty of the Rajapaksa family, massive infrastructure projects undertaken with borrowed Chinese money which was always going to push the country to repay through to Covid devastating a tourism and foreign remittance driven economy.
  Wonder why the Daily Sceptic didn’t mention all this?.

    The societal issues are almost exclusively related to food shortages. Two years ago most small communities had sufficient food, a majority of which was locally grown. Not so today. Crop yields have been decimated by the organic-only eco diktat. The issues related to debt are real, but not the cause of the turmoil.

      The country has basically run out of foreign exchange so cannot import anything with the worst affected being fuel, cooking gas and medicine.
      All the food in the world is useless if you have nothing to cook it with.

  It is more likely Sri Lanka banned the import of fertilizer because they didn’t have any foreign currency to pay for it and dressed it up as a “green” thing.
  However, it still shows what happens if there is not fertilizer – 50% drop in production.

  Ah, you didnt have to be too brave to predict what had been signalled for some time , they will go back to 25 base point each month for the rest of the year.
  
  They will not stop until possibly 3.25% or 3.5% to try and cool this market, but if the predictions at budget are right , we still stay out of the RBNZ’s band until 2025
