Another brick in the Mahuta wall; the Herald reports (paywalled):

A consulting firm belonging solely to the husband of Labour Minister Nanaia Mahuta, (William) Gannin Ormsby, was awarded a grant of $28,300 by the Ministry of Māori Development in a period when Mahuta was the department’s Associate Minister.

The role of Associate Minister has narrowly defined responsibilities. The funds were awarded from a suicide prevention fund administered by the department; decision-making responsibility for investments from the Rangatahi Suicide Prevention Fund rested with Willie Jackson, the Minister of Māori Development, his office said.

Relating to matters where Minister Mahuta has ministerial responsibility, a spokesperson for her office said: “where there have been conflicts they have been disclosed to the Cabinet Office. Where there have been conflicts, they are managed appropriately, in accordance with the Cabinet Manual.”

Department documents describe the payment to Ormsby as “funding” for a project to “increase confidence, resilience and self-awareness in rangatahi [young people] through a series of wānanga [forums or seminars]”.

The money flowed from the fund “Rangatahi Manawaroa” formerly the Rangatahi Suicide Prevention Fund, and was made to Ormsby’s consulting firm, Ka Awatea Services, in April last year; Ormsby is the company’s sole shareholder.

Gannin Ormsby spoke to the Herald late on Wednesday. He initially declined to comment on the process he followed in applying for the grant and the disclosures he made, but he subsequently provided to the Herald his firm’s application document, which notes under “conflict of interest”: “Yes – Nanaia Mahuta is the wife of Ka Awatea Director Gannin Ormsby and Aunty of Ka Awatea Directors and Toa Taua Taiao [the project’s name] creators Tamoko and Waimirirangi Ormsby.”
Ormsby also said the project was successful and overseen by his nephew, Tamoko Ormsby, and Tamoko’s wife, Waimirirangi Ormsby, both of whom are directors of Ka Awatea Services.

This whole situation gets murkier and murkier, but here comes the kicker:

A spokesperson for the Department of Māori Development said that expertise in suicide prevention was not required of those receiving money from the fund.

So the Ministry of Maori Development is throwing taxpayer money around willy-nilly, to people with no experience whatsoever in suicide prevention. Those who are struggling to get appointments in the mental health space, particularly for children, will be less than impressed by this revelation.

One can’t help but wonder too if Ormsby disclosed his 2003 conviction for assault on a female, for which he was ordered to do 240 hours of community service.

The Prime Minister cannot allow this to fester any longer. Kate McNamara from the Herald is one of the few people in the mainstream media to cover the issue of Mahuta’s perceived conflicts of interest, but I predict it’s not long before other variants of this story start to appear.

It’s time for either the State Services Commissioner or the Auditor-General to investigate these allegations of conflicts of interest, given that Mahuta’s Three Waters legislation, around which many allegations are centred, goes before Parliament this afternoon for its First Reading debate.

        Nowhere near making me go near it again David. I binned it after Wilson penned his series on so called “poverty” when Key was PM, so the ship has sailed. They kept calling me (literally up until last year) with offers of free papers, and only stopped when I told them: “I wouldn’t use your paper to wipe my arse”.       Under India’s Constitution, the Untouchables, known as Dalits, still face discrimination, and particularly so if they are Christian or Muslim.
      
      There may be 15 to 20 million Christians among the 200 million or so Dalits.
      
      Christian and Muslim Dalits, under the Constitution, are excluded from Indian’s official “Scheduled Caste” list. Sikh Dalits were added to the list in 1950, and Buddhist Dalits in 1990. The list brings political and other rights.
      
      This, from the Indian publication, National Herald (founded by Nehru in 1938), explains the effect:
      
      Take the case of Soosai (1985) who was a cobbler in Chennai, belonging to the Adi-Dravida caste, i.e., before he converted to Christianity. Since he belonged to the cobbler community, he was considered to be an untouchable. His caste was also mentioned in the Scheduled Caste list. Despite converting to Christianity, his economic and social condition saw no considerable change. But when free bunk beds were allotted to members of his caste-community, Soosai was excluded because he was not a Hindu or Sikh.

  Add the Mahuta connection that Nanaia Mahuta’s sister, Tipa Mahuta, chairs the Maori Advisory entity inputting to Taumata Arowai, the new Water Regulator – first “pillar” of “3 Waters” – and you have another area of possible conflict of Mahuta interest – not to mention that the Maori Advisory entity can surpass the “co-governance” aspects of “3 Waters” as well as blow the Havelock North and water purity arguments for “3 Waters” out of the bloody water.

  Sort of sums up many peoples concerns about co governance, three waters and the like. The Māori I know personally are hardworking business people who have never received a cent from any type of settlement or government hand out. Pity these troughers seem to do little else but reinforce stereotypes as they manipulate every attempt by successive governments to redress past wrongs. They disgust me . Māori deserve better. In my humble opinion.

  Please nooo investigation. If that happens we get no results for at least two years. The results will be meaningless with the actions so historic, people will no longer care. Labour would likely not even be in government so what would any punishment even be?
  
  All during the investigation Labour would be able to say… ‘We can’t comment around this issue as it is subject to an on going investigation’. Any investigation would be a win for labour.

    Actually having someone under active investigation during an election campaign is a great place to be, you can insinuate all sorts of dark dealings and keep allegations front and centre during a campaign. When the investigation is over and nothing is found just shrug and move on or say the investigation was flawed or corrupt.
    You do have to keep the media on side like the Dems did with Trump, rather than covering up like they did for Hunter Biden.

    Most of the mahi they do surfing is trend setting in the size of rock to adorn progressive necks, introducing new te reo words and phrases to replace perfectly adequate English ones , campaigning to have place names widely accepted spellings changed and setting media personalities against each other as to who can pronounce Māori place names in the most ridiculous and obscure manner. So the Supreme Court has overturned Alan Hall’s murder conviction after 37 years and after he has spent 19 years in prison. Some issues as I see them.
1. There seem to be serious and deliberate criminal and disciplinary breaches on the part of the Police and individual Police Officers. The Officers involved would have long since retired (or died) so action against them would now be extremely unlikely.
2. Whether any Crown Law contractors were implicated in these wrongdoings. If so, because of the seriousness of the matter, withdrawal of a Crown Law warrant even at this late stage should be given serious consideration.
3. Compensation of $3M plus reimbursement of Alan’s legal fees and costs involved with the investigations initiated by his family. It is apparent now that he was not responsible on the balance of probabilities. $1M of the $3M would be extraordinary damages for the serious wrongful actions on part of the Police at the time.

    I suggest you read (or re-read) Beyond Reasonable Doubt. I’ve not read it for years but one of the aspects that has stuck with me was a discussion about Detective Hutton via people who had worked with him where he said that in any case where there are multiple suspects you eventually have to pick one, throw all the evidence you’ve got at them in a hypothetical trial in discussion with other investigators to see if it nails the suspect. If it does you go ahead and prosecute.
    
    Nowhere in that discussion is any room apparently given for one of the cops to play defence lawyer: any exculpatory evidence is excluded, under the assumption that that’s the Defence’s job if it goes to trial.
    
    It’s a hell of way of weeding out suspects.

      ….. and we know where Hutton’s style of investigation got Thoma & the NZ police & judicial system. When, oh when, is NZ going to rid itself of:
      1. Lazy incompetent police;
      2. Lazy, incompetent crown solicitors and prosecutors; and

      Actually I think that responsibility should be accepted from the top at the time.
      That would surely be whoever was responsible for the Justice portfolio at the time.

    Mike Bush’s eulogy for Bruce Hutton would have been an eye opener at to police thinking on that case.
    I’m sure there’s plenty of times the police ‘know’ they’ve got their man, but he’s slipped through their fingers.
    I read a book by the late Peter Williams wherein he wrote even if you know you’ve committed murder, plead not guilty.
    You just never know.

  The most egregious thing about this case is that the Crown has known for decades that evidence was tampered with.
  
  In fact, the state had known since 1988 that the witness statement was doctored.

      Simon Moore was Crown Solicitor Auckland from 1994, to his appointment as a High Court Judge in 2004.
      Much water has passed under the Meredith Connell bridge since then.

        He was convicted of murder in 1986.
        He served 9 years in prison and was released on parole.
        
        He was recalled to prison in 2012 for a breach of his (strict) parole requirements.
        
        He did another 10 year stretch in prison and was only released this year.

  to give an idea of the timeframe involved, at the time of his conviction, Hall’s current lawyer, Nick Chisnall, would have still been in primary school.
  
  I note Chisnall is making quite a name for himself in cases involving miscarriages of Justice. A Justice system needs lawyers like Chisnall to keep it on it’s toes.
  
  I also note Chisnall is also the lawyer for Scott Watson. Watch that space.

  Apparently the Coral Triangle Day “is an annual, open-sourced event that brings together individuals, organizations, and establishments on one special day of the year to shed light on ocean conservation and the numerous ways to protect and conserve the Coral Triangle.”
  That sounds relatively harmless and even a good idea.
  
  However over in Australia the data is not good for the climate change fanatics.
  Australia is having a cold patch and winter records are tumbling. In Launceston in Tasmania the temperature is dropping to an “unbearable” -1.6°C! That’s just a normal night here in Masterton. And Brisbane is having its coldest weather for this time of year since 1904. The temperature is dropping during the night to 7°C!!

  One is forced to wonder about the predictions of the climate change/global warming lobby who predicted the end of snow and told us confidently the planet is getting warmer because of man’s carbon emissions. This data from Australia is the opposite of what one would expect if the planet is getting warmer. Brisbane is having its coldest weather for this time of year in 100 years.
  
  Our government spends millions of dollars on monstrous wind turbines, they bribe us to convert beautiful farmland into pine trees and we hamper our industry and development, for what? Is the planet actually getting warmer?
  Or is it the fanatical religious zeal of a relatively small minority who keep telling us that unless we change everything the end of the world is nigh?

    You are very correct Scott. This is one of the many unreported items of cooling trends around the world, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Southern Hemi. usually follows the Northern. They have been having record cold in the USA & Canada, so probably in Siberia & China as well.
    I happened to be reading my dad’s diary the other day, to see where he was on D Day – 6th. of June 1944. He was at Maadi Camp in Egypt, preparing for the invasion of Italy, and he was saying that it was very hot – 116 degrees F. in the shade – that’s 47 deg. C. I wonder how hot it is now in the same place?

        Thanks kk. Actually, the temp then was ’46 C in the shade’ -0 so outside temp. was probably 4 or 5 warmer. I recall putting a roof on a house when I was in Oz as a roofing contractor. I had a job to do at Cobar, NSW – a mining town out in the semi-arid central NSW. The carpenters knocked off at about 2pm. – I had the roof covered so they were workin g in the shade – they said “it’s 42 degrees – too hot in here.” I was till working up on the roof finishing it off, so probably around 48 – 50 C. I had my lackeys passing me up a mixture of salty water & lemon juice – with the warm dry breeze you didn’t sweat – the moisture was sucked right out of you. I finished the job about 4 pm – I had drunk 6 litres of the fluid. Didn’t have a piss until we’d had about 5 schooners of beer at the pub. 🙂

  Flossie: Yes the law is the law, but this particular area of the law is applied differently to Maori…in short, if members of an iwi snatches someone’s body and buries it somewhere the deceased had no desire to be, the cops will refuse to intervene. If someone were to seize yours and do the same, they would almost certainly do time for it. I hope that helps.

  It is not the first time this has happened.
  Some years ago the body of a recently deceased maori fellow was taken from a funeral directors premises in Christchurch by members of his family and taken to a family cemetary in the North Island.
  That rumbled through the courts for a couple of years with the result, as I recall, there was an order made that the body be disintered and returned to christchurch.
  I am not entirely sure that happened as the case disappeared from the notice of the media.

Christchurch and Ecan recently halved the bus fares in Chch/Canterbury to improve bus usage. So how is that going?

Yesterday, while out for a drive I saw 6 buses in use (I ignored empty buses not in service and two empty school buses).

They had 0, 0, 1, 2, 2 and 4 passengers. The bus I counted as having 4 passengers actually had 3 on when I counted, but one had just got off so I generously included an extra.

That’s nine passengers in 6 buses – an average of 1.5 passengers per bus.

A bus uses somewhere around 30-40l/100km. So those buses were averaging around 25l/100km per person moved. That’s about 3x what an SUV with a single person uses.

C’mon Jimmy Shaw, get your eco-terrorist mates out deflating bus tyres!

    As somebody who was using Christchurch buses as my main means of transport for most of last year, I can confirm that de facto there is no mask requirement. Technically the rule requiring masks is still in place, but there is absolutely zero enforcement, and only a minority of people wear them.

    Don’t wear one. Get an exemption. There wouldn’t be many people who couldn’t legitimately tick at least one box on the form. Public transport operators are not allowed to ask you about a mask. Retailers can, but they aren’t allowed to ask you why you are exempt. And you know what? The mask exemption is just a printed sign that says I am exempt from wearing a face covering. Although I believe that from 1 June they do have your name on them.

      I dont know about other areas but in Tauranga area, many (including me) do not wear masks to supermarkets or at places like Bunnings/Mitre 10.
      
      Each week I see more and more maskless. All ages and ethnicities.
      I am presuming civil disobedience as none of the establishments question anyone.

  I live in Christchurch and I play that game too. I rarely go out in peak hours because I work at home, so I guess there are more passengers then. But during the say and the weekends I have never seen more than 10 people on a bus. The cost per passenger must be horrendous.
  
  The thing is that for most people the barriers to using public transport are not the ticket prices. If it was free I would not use it.
  
  I saw an interesting study from Europe (I posted it here a few weeks back.) It found that if you make PT ‘free’ the people who take up the free buses are folk who previously walked and rode bikes. Which makes sense. For people on very low incomes, they can now get the bus instead of walking. But ‘free’ PT does not get people out of cars, UNLESS you also make the PT competitive with cars on journey time.

    I live up the hills BY, about 500m distance from the foot of the hill. The bus goes up my hill at the end of its run, does a loop round and comes back down. In 8 years I don’t believe I’ve ever seen more than one passenger on a bus.
    My small car going up this hill uses >20 l of petrol per 100km (doesn’t show beyond that) for the full distance. Hate to think what a bus uses.

    That makes sense Benedict. If you can afford a car, it’s not money that’s keeping you off public transport. Travel times and frequency become key. If the public transport journey takes three times as long, or missing one bus means waiting a long time for the next, people won’t use it.
    Unfortunately, we’re playing catch-up when it comes to building our public transport network.

    I was in Bangkok when the first Skytrain was opened.
    Maybe 25 years ago down Sukhumvit Rd. One of the most congested road in the galaxy.
    They were almost empty because people were too aloof to use public transport, even when the fares were slashed.
    Now in the rush hour the trains are just about as congested as roads below.

      and Bangkok is a horribly congest and densely populated City as you well know. Mass transport in large Eurasian Cities makes huge sense as the roading can’t cope. But in NZ most of our cities outside of Auckland don’t have the population base to support Greens and Central Planners wet dreams.
      
      Rail only works in Wellington because of topography with long urban cluster spreading from an urban hub in the Wellington CDB to Upper Hutt and Waikane. The choke points to get to the City from the Hutt and Porirua make rush hour driving a pain hence the trains popularity in Wellington for CBS workers…

        Rail works in the Hutt Valley and Porirua because these suburbs were built around the existing (and later extended) rail infrastructure.
        Conversely, it is VERY difficult to retro-fit public transport to existing towns that were NOT designed around public transport.

        Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in 1976. I flew there about twenty years later on a ‘visa run’ from Bangkok into the roughest international airport I’ve ever seen. About on a par with the regional terminal at Auckland Airport.
        The name Saigon was still in common use, a bit like Siam in Thailand.
        Curiously American currency was in common use, which was handy because the local dong was something like 22,000/$NZ1 and very difficult to figure out a quick conversion in your head.
        A lot of beggars with missing limbs. One that sticks in my mind was a boy, maybe 9yo carrying a baby that couldn’t support its head so that it flopped on its shoulder.
        I’d seen some grim stuff in Bangkok, but not like that.

  Hastings buses are doing `pickups’ from houses on a trial basis from either this week or next week for a month I think. Just like a Taxi servvice (maybe) but with presumably 20 seater buses.
  
  Based on the promotions I have heard you phone in and order a bus and it will come straight away (dream on) and pick you up from your home. It will the meander all over town dropping people off as there are no set routes.
  
  I predict a fiasco with little patronage.

    Sound similar to the Auckland-based “AT Local” service, a 12-month trial in Conifer Grove, Takaanini and Papakura. Not quite door to door. They refer to it as an on-demand ride-share service.

    Apparently there was a two-year trial in Devonport. It was heavily subsidised, never reached its target of 200 trips a day, and weekend services were dropped after 12 months to contain costs.   Yep, this is just a fundamental flaws of public transit systems. And why (in contradiction to climate-cultist wet-dreams) they don’t actually help reduce carbon emissions.
  
  To be a practical form of transport that people can actually use, bus services need to be frequent and serve many destinations. If people have to wait half an hour or more at the bus stop, or walk 20 minutes to get to their final destination, they just aren’t going to use it. But to achieve that requires lots of routes, with lots of buses running on each. Which unavoidably means lots of buses driving around almost empty for most of the day… but still producing basically the same emissions as when they’re full in peak hours.

Interesting differences between China and the USA. China is increasing its naval fleet by over 100 including aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines etc. Large scale, war ready ships. It is already the world’s largest navy.

USA’s top priority is converting its amphibious fleet to electric vehicles. In a report just released Navy Secretary Del Toro writes that climate is “the focal point” for his tenure as Navy Secretary, and notes that both President Biden and Defense Secretary Austin share that view. The Navy Department, Del Toro writes, will be an “environmental leader” that takes “bold climate action.”

Taiwanese may want to consider packing up and leaving. Waiting for American naval craft to arrive to help may be a vain hope. They will be sitting down at the charging station.

  The PLAN is in the same position that the German High Seas Fleet was in 1914. They had a huge fleet but it didn’t have to stray far from home waters.
  
  Therefore the living conditions for the crew were not important as they could use barracks when ashore.
  
  The Officers had no fighting experience or command of large fleets,
  
  The USN is in the same position as the RN at that time. They have a huge area to police, their ships have to be habitable for the crews over a long period of time and the crews need periods of leave from operating at a reasonably high tempo for a long period of time.
  
  Also now unlike the RN in 1914 the USN has a huge number of powerful allies ie the Japanese, the RN and other countries that can help.

  AFAIK the US Navy’s current procurement priorities are (a) bringing the Gerald Ford class carriers into service, (b) bringing the next-generation of ballistic missile subs into service, (c) looking at UCAVs, UUCVs, loyal wingmen, swarming etc and (d) directed weapons such as lasers for defence against drones, swarming etc.
  
  Strategically, the US military has a lot of interest in moving away from fossil fuels because they see them as a big operational & logistical vulnerability. So they’re looking into emerging technologies to, for example, make jet fuel from sea water so that their carrier groups are more independent and not vulnerable to having their tankers sunk.

        You need to think of the economics in terms of (a) you already have a nuclear reactor that gives you almost unlimited electrical power, so the marginal cost of electricity is zero, ( b) the delivered cost of jet fuel to a carrier at sea is a lot higher than to say LAX, and (c) the military value of not being vulnerable to a long supply chain is huge.
        
        In other words, the US Navy thinks about jet fuel quite differently to how an airline thinks about it.

    There is a comment in that story that everyone has been run down by a car. I’ve never had that happen to me. I have been knocked over twice by speeding cyclists on the footpath at Oriental Bay in Wellington. One of them was while I was on crutches. I got abused by the bloody cyclist for not getting out of his way on that occasion.
    If I hadn’t been on the crutches and barely able to walk I would have picked his bike up and tossed it over the seawall into the harbour.

  To be fair….if he can cycle with 7 huskies they must be impeccably well behaved dogs, thus not something that should affect his safety or you should denigrate him for.
  
  The article also says his clothes were damaged so it is by no means certain that he was wearing black when hit.
  
  The driver was clearly at fault.
  
  I wouldn’t do it (my dogs would shoot off after a cat or go the wrong way around a lamppost) but I don’t see why he shouldn’t or why he should be mocked for it.

Surely to goodness, if you are going to move a police station, you would have a checklist of sensitive information that must be moved securely, you would double check that had happened and any papers no longer required would be securely collected and destroyed.

    I got that from the initial news reports. Since then the later reports have said he was motivated by the Roe vs Wade abortion question.
    
    Even now the stories seem quite confused. Some stories say he was arrested by marshals outside Kavanaugh’s house as he got out of a taxi. Others say that he called 911 himself and basically dobbed himself in.

  Have a look at the background of the previous and present directors and CEO’s. Yes some have worked for shipping lines and logistic (how I hate that word it use to be transport until it was tarted up and split into different compartments consultants love that s…) companies. As lawyers abd accountants none in the operational area. The Directors are directors of many companies they are professional seat warmers. Auckland only handles about 700000 teus annually which is miniscule. It was an exercise to reduce labour costs. I believe I am right but can be corrected the terminal now works 2 x 12 hour shifts instead of the previous 3x8hour shifts. I wonder if this has impacted on productivity? Also many years ago the terminal and the port had many vastly experienced ex seafarers working for them.

Covid Modelling. This week the government announced the number of vaccinated was wrong. It was only based on those who had engaged with the health system. The doom predictions didn’t eventuate. And the vaccine didn’t create herd immunity. But we could see this in real time once the borders opened and the virus struck we could see the vaccine didn’t stop spread and that you weren’t going to end up on a ventilator.

And now governments turn back to Climate Change and ask us to knee cap our businesses and economy based on modelling that is arguably much more difficult to do accurately than modelling a virus happening in a short time frame. How sure are we that the modelling is right or even close. The covid modelling was well out.

  People immigrating to NZ need to be in reasonable health so as to not be a burden to the taxpayer. There have been numerous people turned away with various disabilities.

Harder times arriving for the banksters?

Share prices have fallen for the big Australian banks, which own the major banks in NZ.

Westpac shares fell 6 per cent yesterday, and CBA, which owns NZ’s ASB, fell 4.4 per cent.

The Australian Financial Review says the share price falls reflect fears that rising mortgage rates will lead to a spike in bad debts and higher funding costs.

      That’s not completely right, All-on-Red. I know of at least one case where a bank foreclosed on a family home in 1987.
      
      There might not have been mortgagee auctions, but in the case I know of, the bank used a private detective to serve the final papers.

The tribunal has granted refugee status to an Indian bisexual man who says he was persecuted in his home town.

The tribunal obviously didn’t consider that the man might have found a safe spot in another town in India.

The tribunal’s signal, to India alone, is alarming in its ramifications.

India’s population is about 1.406 billion. Some estimates are that about 1 per cent of a population is bisexual with a ratio of about 108 males to 104 females.

That would mean there are about 146 million bisexual males in India.

Wait till they hear NZ is a bolt hole for them.

And less than 20 per cent of the world’s people – and presumably bisexuals — live in India. So a message for 750 million male bisexuals: the doors to NZ are open.

    I realised that when:
    
    1. Universities charged full fees
    2. When my nieces & nephew couldn’t attend their local high School (which their father, uncle and I had attended) but were bused across W(h)anganui to failing colleges.
    3. When another nephew didn’t attend school from age 6-12 (and no-one seemed to notice until he committed a crime)
    4. When night schools stopped teaching classes that lead to qualifications
    5. When Polytechs took over decent apprenticeships
    6. When youth rates disappeared (and 15-16 year olds lost their after-school jobs)
    
    and when I went teaching and met some teachers who didn’t give a stuff about their kids.

  I cannot believe that (I assume) a sane, rational political leadership don’t regard this as an existential crisis worse than war. It’s certainly orders of magnitude more impactful than covid or climate or race relations or any of the other comparatively irrelevant political hobby horses that media and polis drone on about.
  
  It pressages nothing less than the end of NZ as a functional democracy and first world nation, In a decade or two this huge pool of uneducated kids will be functionally unemployable (made worse by march of automation technology), and will tip us over the precipice to being New Venezueland. When the number of welfare dependant voters nears 50% the end is inevitable.
  
  It is probably too late even now, with a few hundred thousand kids already doomed to shitty adult lives, but unless it is fixed immediately with a massive effort to end the crappy parenting and welfare dependency that is creating it, the only rational course of action is to emigrate before the economy and democracy is wrecked by the nascent zombie army of miserable drop-outs. In short it demands a revolution, with effective action, not fucking ‘kind’ announcements or bullshit woke programs that just ensure the same malignant business as usual failed education/welfare system staggers on towards the abyss that lies before us.
  
  And it is on the heads of all politicians who have been in govt over the last 2 decades as it has developed, but particularly the left with their ineffectual infantile ‘kind’ approach enabling those who choose to be a drain on the country and it’s future. It was not the Union who made the decision to automate the container terminal operation but management and directors. As I understand it the problem was the software hardly anything to do with the Union. Worked in this and allied industry in management all my working life and most problems are due to poor management. People jump on the anti Union bandwagon too easily without knowing the facts.

  Was at sea on the NZ Coast from 74 to 92 and the management was CRAP.
