Though it hasn’t made the news here, Australia is on the brink of a major power crisis.

The weather there has been very cold and wet (https://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/51288/20220609/record-breaking-freeze-hits-australia-as-experts-recorded-the-coldest-start-of-winter-for-over-a-century.htm) so the power demand is high. Very high into the dusk. Wind isn’t blowing, no solar or batteries, so even half of SA generation is gas. Last night, they had to burn diesel to get 120MW. The previous bans on coal seam gas exploration have hit home so there is not much gas available. Victoria banned its own gas but now wants to build a LNG import terminal! That means the grid have fallen back on their old coal fired stations. And these have started breaking down. Spot prices are going really high. And to get more renewables built, the power price is going to have to rise even higher.

Of course, everyone is blaming unreliable coal. As always, things are not what they superficially seem. The way their grid works, the renewables are priority dispatch, then it’s gas, with coal having to make up the difference – last on first off. The politicians keep on promising to make their grid totally renewable. They want all the coal stations shut down and quickly. So the owners of those stations haven’t been putting money into maintenance, particularly the long term stuff, as there is no payback.
Now, when they really need reliable power, there is nothing there. The new government is going to cop the not undeserved flack if and when the power cuts start. The power prices are already hurting but there is a lot more pain on the way. A clean green image doesn’t go very far when the lights are off and people are shivering or sweating in the dark.
Where it is relevant for NZ is that though the balance of plant is significantly more renewables here (mainly hydro and geothermal), we rely on the gas and coal to a lot greater extent than people realise. This is especially so when the wind doesn’t blow. Go to this site here https://app.em6.co.nz/ and click through the generation types for last six months to see how unreliable wind is. Be aware that the daily totals don’t give a true picture of the minute to minute variability. Hydro is often tapped out over the peaks so they can’t produce more. Geothermal goes flat out all the time. So thermals have to ramp up and down to match the shortfall between generation and demand. Our thermal plant is old and not much gas is available, especially when gas fields have long outages for extra maintenance. We will probably scrape through this winter OK, at least as long as Huntly or one of the CCGTs don’t break down. But will we get through to next November without major problems, if not cuts? I wouldn’t bet on it.

  I wouldn’t bet on it either. On balance I think it will be close though but the market will manage it (for which the government, who hates markets and would shut it down, will take the credit).
  
  Unlike Aussie we have had plenty of experience with dry year management – and we haven’t gone hard out subsidising intermittent renewables as they have.

    We do subsidise wind, but not as much as Oz and UK do. They get exemptions from major grid rules like 2 hour dispatch and providing grid support which every other generator has to meet. Enforce those and there would be no wind built.

      It would be truly absurd to enforce those requirements against wind generators. By definition wind generation is variable, so these requirements make no sense for wind power.
      Obviously wind power is not base load, in the UK that has to come from gas or nuclear. in NZ basically from hydro storage.
      Are you seriously suggesting that wind power generators have to also build a base station to match each wind power station that is built?

        Wayne your understanding of the grid is limited and it doesn’t do what you think it does. Because other generation types have to cover for wind (and solar) unreliability, they are subsidised by the others.
        The wind stations could easily build the grid batteries there so they could meet two hour dispatch.
        A lot of NZ hydro isn’t baseload – only the bottom stations on rivers – Karapiro , Roxburgh and Waitaki or those run of the river (little or no storage) like Rangipo or Waipapa. Most hydros are two shifted. The Waikato stations generally go from about 150MW at 4am to 850MW at 6pm.

        One factor that needs addressing in Power generation is a guarantee of “SUPPLY”.
        Cars and trucks coming to rest with empty fuel tanks is one thing, Electrical devices with no lectricity on a whole different planet.

        I agree. At the times the rules were written consideration was given to whether the wind gens should have to meet those conditions but as it was completely unreasonable – and the cost imposed on others was next to nothing at under 20% wind gen penetration- a decision was made to mandate the approach they must take to submitting offers. So no – they don’t get off scot free.

  CJ, two things that are at present slowing our power consumption are snail paced new house building and mild weather. When winter finally arrives those Indonesian coal shipments will go at full pace but this is merely papering over the cracks. This country has gone down the Green hole with a vengeance and with no new power sources we will indeed become a hermit queendom.

  In regards to Gas for domestic use only WA prioritises for use as opposed to export, Herein lies a lot of issues.
  As you suggested electricity prices are down to renewables and the “Great Transition” away from fossil fuels.

    We make a lot more money selling our own coal for steelmaking. Look at price schedules for top Grade metallurgical coal vrs steaming coal. It would be a waste to use it in power stations. With a bulk product like coal, the distance from mine to station is critical. Coal can also spontaneously combust in a heap, so stockpiles can’t be big.
    The thickness of the seam is a big factor. In overseas mines of thermal coal, the seams are hundreds of metres thick, so even deep opencasting is viable. They are not that here.
    Brown coal/ lignite like we have in large deposits in Southland can be used but that brings a lot more problems – described by one colleague as turning dirt to ash with a little bit of heat on the way.

        Huntly was built to use Huntly West coal. It was going to be longwalled out. When the mine was built, they found big problems. What they thought was a continuous seam had a lot of faults and displacements. So that made mining a lot more difficult. Then Coalcorp decided longwalling was too expensive so they sold that gear at a big loss to Oz (where its still being used) and went to pillar and post. Not long after that, the mine caught fire so now is all boxed up. Coal could only be extracted by opencast. The seam is deep down, too deep to be viably mined that way.
        When the mine was still operating, I got a visit down there it was a very long walk down the an adit. I remember it well. Only the second time I’d been in a working underground mine – the other visit was Mt Somers mine as a primary school pupil. That I remember well as they had pit ponies and they let off a shot while the class was down there. Worksafe wasn’t around in those days.

        In the 60s there was also an opencast mine on the Eastern side of Huntly. I recall a tale going round about the mine on the West side. A miner broke a leg at Rugby League on Sunday so his mates took him down the mine and placed a lump of coal on it so the Underviewer would find him next morning.

        There is an opencast mine south of Huntly West. Rotowaro. Still mined and they still get coal out of it. Goes to Glenbrook from memory. But to feed Huntly, the mine would need to be a lot bigger.
        IIRC, there was never a bog opencast on Eastern Side. There were some small pits, like those around Huntly East portal. That mine went right under the town and power station. It was a political decision to build the station there, when engineers advised not to. Gave an income to the Maori Queen so you know what party. Reason 387 why politicians should never be allowed near the electricity industry. They should just set the rules and butt out.

      Well I’m not sure where we will get it from as Indonesia no longer want to export, they need it for themselves (sensible people). My son said he sees 20 coal trucks coming from the wharf every day on their way to Meremere. (He works in Stanley St).

  Three points here.
  
  First, take a look at this graph of indexed electricity prices in Aussie from 1955 to 2017. The rise in price has been steep and unrelenting since the start of the age of unreliable power in the mid-2000’s.
  
  Second, note that the Liberal-National’s have been in government during much of this time, including the last nine years just ended. So when Labor and the Left hold them responsible for much of this nonsense they will be correct.
  
  Third, hidden by such truth is the fact that Labor and the Greens wanted to go harder and faster on all this, which may have been a better idea since the crash would have come harder and faster, with appropriate lessons learned.
  
  Lessons for National here in NZ on “renewables” and climate change: Labour and the Left want you in on this so that when the hungry, cold crowds with the pitchforks and burning torches turn up they can point fingers at you and say:
  
  “But they did it too”
  
  And they’ll be right.

    In short, it’s an industrial civilisation that’s enabling him to live like this. To what extent such a civilisation can be reduced or downgraded while still being able to support hundreds of millions or billions of people to live such a poetic and rustic lifestyle is an unanswered, and perhaps unanswerable, question. Certainly in the Developing world, billions of people are moving in the opposite direction from this guy – with all that implies about their demands for energy and technology.

      Tom Hunter – my reason for doing so want fire to some romantic “save the planet” notion. Location meant it was the only viable option. I am very grateful to all those who developed the technology that permitted me to make this choice!
      It can be hard work, it certainly isn’t the utopia the plastic, wannabe greenies seem to think it is. The bonus is, it prevents those fuckwits from lasting very long in the community. About 2 winters on average when the batteries are flat and the generator craps out in the middle of a howling sou’easter and pissing rain.

  Look at the graph and include co-gen and you’re about 15% for this 3 month period, which is pretty consistent with the >80% renewable figure that gets bandied around.
  
  One would add that if you have plant you’ll opportunistically run it. The suggestion is that as the ETS bites that will decline and we’ll get down to 4-5% on BAU.
  
  It isn’t a problem if you are worried about emissions and ensuring systems stability with significant growth in electricity demand, there are much bigger fish to fry.

I know of two Directors who are vastly experienced and held in very high regard, that have refused after being asked. Given they are ones that I know about, there are sure to be others. The editor seems to think that Trevor Mallard is the typical Kiwi bloke next door that voters like. It did provide criticism as well but I just want to say that none of my neighbours remind me of Trevor Mallard.

    Interested to see that 46 claims accepted for 5-17 year olds.
    So the “safe and effective” vaccine has harmed children to a level that ACC have accepted a claim. One can only think these children have suffered a some pretty major adverse health effect. The evidence that Covid had little impact on young people was in public view prior to vacinnations being available. The Oxford University risk calculator was an excellent resource to quantify outcomes from Covid – it wouldn’t even calculate a risk below the age of 19!
    
    Of course the evidence here will have no impact on the parents who got psycho traumatised about their children being killed. Ruled by their fear, it is unlikely they can be convinced by the data now.
    
    Meanwhile children in New Zealand are still discriminated against for the stance that we have the right to choose the medical treatments we undergo and that our personal medical status is generally nobody else’s business. Summer for these children was spent excluded from sports, council facilities – pools, libraries etc, movie theatres, dining out. Even now they are unable to pursue interests in acting for film and television – because almost universally this industry has applied self-imposed vaccine mandates.
    
    The people I really feel for are all those who still cannot be employed in the vocation they have trained in. Or those that have chosen to sacrifice their personal safety to be able to maintain their job.
    
    Why do we allow this discrimination to continue when it is now crystal clear that vaccination makes not a jot of difference to catching or passing on Covid?

BIG THANKS TO NZ FIRST AND SHANE JONES
Just a heads up if you’re unaware …. I’ve currently been involved in major 3 water projects in small town Nz .
The money came from Shane jones provincial growth fund. It’s govt money .
Councils that dont hv the ratepayer base to upgrade infrastructure hv been allocated millions with a set time frame to spend on their infrastructure. Water pipelines , sewer systems etc . Obviously with an application process .
This is the way to do it .
Get rid of 3 waters .
Help out where needed and let the councils maintain the systems . Most councils do a great job .most councils don’t need govt help .

There should be a system whereby if a council squanders its rates on nice to haves instead of the need to haves ( think Wellington /Auckland ) then tough titty , you miss out , the facts are published and the councillors that voted for crap sculptures , buildings , cycle lanes etc etc get thrown out by a more engaged and informed public .
Put articles out stating govt refuses to fund Wellington upgrades as the local councillors voted to spend the money on theses items . List who voted for what . Explain those funds could hv prevented the monthly geysers downtown and sewer discharges to the ocean.
If a council has been prudent but simply doesn’t hv the rate base to install required upgrades then help out .
The govt wins by being seen as proactive , and ensuring a healthy tax base ( business and workers ) that can grow in marginal communities .
If the capacity for water / stormwater ,sewer and power is increased , then why wouldn’t business invest ? It’s Cheaper land away from cities , subdivisions can be built to support workers , all linking up to required services
This is how small towns become big towns which then become cities . You need the roads , sewer , stormwater , water and electricity first .

For perspective , a few million can go a long way , a few tens of million goes miles .
How many millions are squandered by the govt with fuck all to show for it ?

We had a few friends over last night. The discussion got onto ‘climate-change’… and NZ’s requirement to convert 380,000 Hectares of productive farmland to Exotic Forest by 2035.

One of the girls came up with what I thort was an interesting question….”Rather than putting the burden entirely on our farmers, how many trees would need to be planted on the (average) residential section to meet the same goal?”

As an example, given our property in Remuera is a little over 1800 sq mt, with about a quarter of it in mature trees, are we already doing OUR bit?

  If you really want to reduce CO2 levels you should cut down all the forests and land-fill them, grow more, rinse, repeat. In Remuera microcosm put all the trees on your property through a chipper, fill in your pool with the chips and cover it over with a few loads of nice impermeable clay.   1. Mature trees are usually in a near CO2 balance… the volume of new growth they are adding each year is pretty much the same as the volume they are losing (leaf fall, branch decay, root decay, and respiration)
  
  2. Assuming you plant up another quarter of your section (450 sq M) with fast-growing trees, then you might in a few years’ time get them sequestering C at a rate of 0.3 tonnes/yr.
  
  (This is based on our plantation forests accumulating 6.4 tonnes C/ha/yr).
  
  But an average NZ has a C footprint of 10 tonnes/ha.
  
  Now I’m sure you and your partner are NOT average…
  
  So each of you are at least 9.7 tonnes C in the red each year.

  Trouble is trees grow and have to be moved at a later date. Neighbour planted monkey apple type hedge and never took care of it. Over 30 years they grew to 7 meters high and trunks 300mm diameter.
  Cost me $11000 to get them removed and stumps ground, so I could put up a fence.
  And I got my sunlight back!
  I used to have a view right down Hellyer’s Creek to Hobsonville boat ramp and wharf. Now the view is blocked with trees trees trees!!

      I agree with everything both you and Don Beckett say about this facade of an inquiry.
      What I can’t come to grips with is the fact that crime at this high level is sanctioned by the FBI and often their operatives at the highest level are involved and approximately 50 percent of the nation doesn’t give a shit. To me, it’s almost as though the public expects it and because it’s been happening over many decades, they just turn a blind eye.

        The Gov Whitmer case leading up to the 2020 election demonstrates clearly that, absent the direct involvement and impetus of federal agents, the phenomenon of “right wing extremist groups” is almost non-existent. It is a concocted threat that is used to justify expansion of powers and budgets, and consequent severe law enforcement measures against and political persecution of opponents of the power structure (loosely, those who did or are likely to vote for Trump or someone like Trump).
        
        Clearly, Trump supporters expressed their justifiable frustration at the Capitol on Jan 6th of their own volition, and they rioted on the grounds. However, there was never any conspiracy to do so nor was there an attempted “insurrection.” Just for starters, the purported insurrectionists were unarmed. But it is also clear that several factors suggest that the authorities wanted a disturbance in order to act as a pretext for a crack down on political dissent, which would engender a chilling effect and make people think twice.

When do LGQBTetc rights become persecution of Christians?

Bethlehem College Tauranga – a State Integrated College with its special character based on Christianity – is coming under fire from Gordy Lockhart, an LGQBTetc activist. Gordy has taken exception to a Christian school having a statement of beliefs that includes that Marriage is between a man and a woman. This could harm LGBetc children at the school.

Chris Hopkins and the MinEd are now getting involved to ensure the wellbeing of LGBetc children.

But if you look at what is really going on here, Gordy the activist is actually attacking Christians and telling them they don’t have the right to hold their views. Why is MinEd not protecting the Christian students from being attacked by an LGBetc activist? The direct correlation here is that the Gordys of this world will keep attacking the views, values, morales of anyone that doesn’t support his minority lifestyle.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that this argument with Bethlehem College can be equally applied to Churches. LGBetc children and people in Churches are being harmed by the values of the Church. When does it become illegal to have the view that marriage is between a man and woman before God? How many years until we see Christians discriminated against and persecuted in New Zealand?

Was interesting until it got to the end where suddenly his race started popping up.

So it’s ok if a non Maori person who suffers from FASD spends hours in “psychologically difficult police interviews”?

McKinnel says it’s completely unacceptable for police officers to lie, or contemplate lying during interviews, “and telling a psychologically vulnerable young Māori male not to speak to a lawyer, whatever your intent, is a deeply troubling feature of any case.”

But telling a non Maori to not speak to a lawyer is OK… Got it.

    I’ve just listened to Luxon’s full speech, and there are some smart politics on display. He’s said that Labour is welcome to pick up these policies, and the National Party will support their implementation.
    
    So either Labour does something, and has to share the glory with National, or they can reject these policies out of hand, in which case National can accuse Labour of being soft on crime. Petrol prices and the reason they are rising dramatically. One of the primary reasons is lack of refining capacity.Ardern closes Marsden Point. Anyone seeing the bigger picture here? The “Great Reset” aka the green new deal is well under way. Ardern is a WEF plant and she doesn’t care how much destruction she causes on her road to Agenda 2030.
