Reflecting on eighty years since the US marines arrived in Wellington.
I see there are some different dates marking the 80 years. The plaque at Queen’s Wharf gives ‘May 1942’, while the NZ official history gives 13 June 1942 as the date of arrival in Wellington when the transport Wakefield brought the 5th Marine Regiment. The Kāpiti U.S. Marines Trust will open a new ‘interpretation site’ at Paekakariki on 21 June, complementing the existing memorial at McKays Crossing.
The camps at Paekakariki and McKays Crossing were built very rapidly for their first American occupants. The 5th Marines were only there for a few weeks before the landing at Guadalcanal.

  m&m, the yanks were extremely adept at building quality camp buildings and the various ones scattered throughout NZ were testimony to that. I know the ones at Sylvia Park in Auckland were used by various government departments until they were demolished for the shopping mall. They had asbestos corrugated roofing and cladding and probably native timber framing. It just illustrates how quickly things can be done if choking bureaucracy is kept at arm’s length.

    I was at Twizel when the MOW built the town.
    I suppose you could say that was similar.
    Just prefabricated a whole lot a standard houses down in Timaru and trucked them to the site.
    They were allocated depending on one’s status and number of kids. If more kids came along another bedroom might be added to the houses.
    Place had everything except old people, back then.
    
    Max Smith who was the Project Engineer, had the biggest house in his own street.
    Barrel of laughs that guy. He broke up some rugby function one Friday because everyone was working the next day.
    He loved rowing and used the MOW resources to build the facility at Lake Ruataniwha which got him in all sorts of shit & he was sacked.

  The unions called a dock workers strike, while the US Marines were preparing to transport vital supplies for the attack at Guadalcanal. As the dock workers refused to work it caused the US military to leave behind fuel, ammunition & rations.

    Not an area with which I am familiar. The official history notes that US work paid very highly, and the waterfront was controlled centrally through the war with comparatively few stoppages and an improved rate of turning around ships.

    I read about this is a book about WW2. Not sure of the accuracy but I heard to the day they called the dock workers strike it was raining and the workers did not want to get wet loading the US ships. The Marines were forced to load the ships themselves before heading off (many to die) in the mud, disease and Japanese fire of the Pacific.
    
    There was also the case after the war ended where for some reason a ship of surviving NZ soldiers were stuck off the coast of New Brighton because they were not allowed to dock.
    
    I grew up anti union not helped by frequent trips on the Cook Strait Ferry being delayed due to strike action.

  The Yanks wanted to build a 4 lane concrete highway from Auckland to Wellington to transport stuff from Camp Bunn at Sylvia Park to Trentham and return . NZ Government said NO. So the Pollies back then were as short sighted as they are now.
  
  My late Mum said the Yanks were very nice boys but a bit forward for her. Old Mum was a bit cautious not so some of her girl friends who welcomed the Yanks gifts ( all of them).

    Granny loved the Marines – she was married and had a child but while Grandad was Army Camp she attended many parties in Wadestown along with her 14 year sister. I have the photographs of them both in the arms of partying Marines. The Yanks of course looked so much more exciting than the boring Kiwi boys. After the war her younger sister left NZ to chase a Yank (as it was described by my Grandfather). She married one and died in California last year aged 96.

  Uptick sonny. Americans in NZ is why I was born – parents met in Auckland, Sylvia Park stores. The were both drivers, moving Americans around Auckland in those awefull pug nose Bedford trucks.

Should Trevor Mallard be rewarded for being a bad boy, well the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed yesterday he is resigning the Speakers Job and Parliament in August 2022 and will get a Diplomatic Postingin Europe.
Everyone knows he wants the Dublin Posting so maybe he will get the very thing he has wanted for so many years.
So should he though?

    That’s not correct cmm – it is convention that former PM’s and Speakers of the House receive a knighthood/damehood. Of course Helen Clark is the exception to the rule, having changed the Honours system to eliminate titular honours.
    
    Interestingly, that didn’t stop her long-term Deputy, the late Sir Michael Cullen accepting a knighthood when it was offered to him.

      Think of Maurice Williamson, demoted by John Key for intervening with the police on behalf of National Party donor Donghua Liu over domestic violence allegations.
      
      Think of Jian Yang, National MP who had worked for the Chinese Security Service before coming to NZ.
      
      Not just National. Speculation flourished when Labour’s Raymond Huo stepped down about the same time.
      
      Then there were the local body politicians with free “junket” trips to China.

  I wondered if the “Europe Posting had not been specified because, with his reputation, Mallard would, in all probability, be unacceptable to some European countries. Maybe Ireland, which would now be well aware of Mallard’s appalling character, has communicated its lack of enthusiasm to Ardern. In the present scheme of things, somewhere near the frontline in Ukraine, with the belligerence it’s facing, would be a far more appropriate destination.

The fact that he isn’t suggests Mallard will get away scot free and this gig is supported by the National Party.

    It’s a manufactured divide that keeps the idiots discussing irrelevancies and prevents any significant change in direction. There is so much uniformity in approach, particularly when it comes to the “global challenges,” that it makes little substantive difference who has a majority. It used to matter, but the difference has become negligible.     I was told by the Traveller Declaration rep yesterday that the requirements will be “phased out”. What that means in practice is that they will first do away with the 24-48h pre-departure mandatory monitored covid test (rumoured to be eo July but not official). Unfortunately it still means you have to fill in the copious forms and await your QR code before boarding. All in the name of control, I can only imagine, as there is no other reasonable reason (esp if NZ citizens don’t need to be vaxxed). How they will manage this for thousands of cruise ship passengers god only knows.

        A$45 here in the Gold Coast was the cheapest I could find, and that was BYO test kit. The whole thing took about 5 minutes, very pleasant and helpful pharmacist who laughed when I asked if we had to wait the 15 minutes for the test to work.
        
        She took one look at it when the C line was present, saw nothing in the T line and threw it in the bin. Nice little earner, not that I blame her – other places charged $120!

  Simon Wallace, Chief Executive of the NZ Aged Care Assoc says ‘nursing shortages in aged care reaching over 1,100 and the loss of more than 800 rest home beds so far and more every day’.
  
  Already some rest homes have closed their doors, more to come. Hospitals are the next step for many elderly.
  
  Nurses are leaving for better pay, some to DHBs. Thousands of vacancies across the ditch.

    Wallace undersells the crisis that is Aged Care. Staffing is the tip of the iceberg.
    
    There are 40,000 Aged Care beds in NZ compared to 14,000 public hospital beds, every 1% of Aged Care beds that are closed means a 3% increase in occupancy at Public Hospitals. Think about that.
    
    Public Hospitals get paid 5 times more per day to look after a patient than Aged Care is funded. So for every bed closed that means a patient moves to Public Hospital it costs us 5 times more for that patient. Again think about that
    
    Govt pretends that Aged Care is awash with money from the corporates – reality is that 70% of aged care beds are provided by Not for Profits
    
    LAst but by no means least Aged Care is predicted to need 57,000 beds by 2035 – where are these beds going to come from when even the Corporates have now stopped building due to a lack of funding and available staff.

      I have a brother in law in an aged care facility. It’s not a hospital.
      I checked the annual report of the organization that runs the facility plus provide other services.
      Half their funding comes from the taxpayer, a bit less than half from fees and the balance from donations.
      That’s about all I know except that which I’ve been told about what proportion of the fees are expected from individual residents.
      Are these essentially private facilities subsidized because if they weren’t a whole public system would have to be created at far greater cost?

      I was personally quite sceptical about the value of the mandates when they were introduced but after seeing them operate I came to the conclusion they had value outside vaccination status.
      The place I work introduced them and it had the effect of forcing most of the whinging, difficult and generally neurotic staff to leave and the resulting workplace environment was much more settled and productive afterwards.
      Bit of spring cleaning is good in any company.

        I got mandated out of my contract role – and then called by one of the GMs a few months later apologising.
        My sister lost her maths teaching job. Asked to come back.
        My partner mandated out of his contract roles (public and private). Asked him back as soon as they were able.
        Now I know a sample of 3 isn’t statistically significant but I don’t have the energy to list all the others that were let go then begged to return. Not a single person I know wasn’t asked to return as soon as they were allowed.

    Many nurse coming to NZ fail the English test to the standard required by DHBs. So they take lower pay in rest homes to give them a year to improve and practice their language skills. Once that is sorted they move to the better pay of DHBs. If you want to stop that then resthomes need to pay to retain their staff.

  The guy didnt have to have a test within 48 hours blah blah(PCR test) he could have had a Rat test within the previous 24 hours. Yep the test that gives you a result while you wait(about 15-30 minutes from walk in to walk out with certificate).
  
  Why NZ still has the pre boarding test requirement si mainly because MOH are involved. Over the last 2 years they have proved themselves hopeless.

      Arnold Nordmeyer was indeed an underrated politician. The labour party suffered from Walter Nash hanging on too long to the leadership when no longer capable and Nordmeyer could have been much more effective.

    Many nurse coming to NZ fail the English test to the standard required by DHBs. So they take lower pay in rest homes to give them a year to improve and practice their language skills. Once that is sorted they move to the better pay of DHBs. If you want to stop that then resthomes need to pay to retain their staff.

      Labour parties have historically been pretty staunchly anti-communist. Given your background knowledge, it is deliberate disinformation to pretend otherwise.

I recall one from my time, always immaculately dressed, who hardly ever spoke (the only Labour MP who I never heard speak was another token, Muslim MP Ashraf Choudray). He was so uneventful I genuinely cannot remember his name. Pleasant enough chap one on one; it was just a mystery what he was doing there.
  
  Nanaia Mahuta was another one; until this term just another brown presence on the Labour benches who seemed never to say or do anything. That’s what you get when you engage in tokenism.
  
  And to be even handed, the Nats are also guilty of tokenism. In my intake was a tall Sikh whose name I also genuinely can’t recall. In the 11 years since I left active politics, he has made zero impression. I assume he’s still there – apparently he made much of his supposed influence among his fellow adherents and countrymen.

Was driving up Frankton Road the other day following this old banger of a Bedford van/truck before finally it turned at the roundabout and I saw it was the Counterspin Media travelling circus.Not sure why they would bring it to Queenstown as the intelligence of people there is far to high to swallow the type of garbage they pump out but never the less I have to give credit where it is due.At least the vehicle accurately represented their “media company”, shabby.

Local body candidates will no longer need to put their address on posters, leaflets, etc. Candidates for major parties could get round it by specifying the party office address.
This is like the daft UK requirement where all company directors had their dates of birth given on a government agency web site. It played right into the hands of identity thieves and fraudsters. For example call centre employees of a major insurance company asked for clients’ dates of birth to confirm identity and pranksters and fraudsters caused much mischief by cancelling policies, etc.

Despite all attempts by Ardern to paint it otherwise, it’s hard to see this ‘Minor’ reshuffle as anything less than a political win for National.

In one afternoon, Ardern has moved on Mallard and Williams, despite only last week expressing confidence in both in the face of mounting criticism.

While those wounds may be cauterized for now, National is not short of other under-performing ministers to focus on.

The ideology that we are not foremost a united nation with a common history, but individual groups of people who are continually told they are victims or perpetrators against another group of NZers. This messaging is designed to create division and discontent and it does. An ideology that says rich people aren’t wealthy because they earned it. These beliefs deliberately promte an idea that someone else owes you. An ideology that believes reducing the prison population would solve social problems. An ideology that believed giving free lunches and tampons in school would encourage school attendance. An ideology that believed locking up society would solve an annual respiratory disease but didn’t consider the social friction. I’m pretty sure Smith and Caughey would have video footage of their glass store front. Why is only the police clean up being shown.

    Correct. That was US1.99 per gallon (even if it is the short US gallon of only 3.8 litres).
    
    I remember in 2000 paying around 80c/litre for diesel in NZ. It is now around 2.90. That’s an average of almost 6% per year increase over the last 22 years.

    In the USA today average petrol (gas) price is 5 USD per US gallon. That is $1.32 per litre or $NZ 2.11 at current exchange rates.
    
    So cheap compared to NZ. But I guess if you have a pick up truck with an 80 litre tank and do lots of miles it is painful.

      Many low-wage people in USA commute very long distances. I had a chat with one guy who travelled 80 miles (130km) each way each day for work – though he car pooled with a buddy. He didn’t consider himself an extreme commuter
      
      With a reasonably thirsty vehicle, they’d be paying US$20-25 each for fuel each day. That’s a huge chunk out of their earnings.

        No different here. My wife has a 35 km commute each way to the hospital. So 70 km round trip That’s 7 litres a day at $3.26 a litre that makes $22.82 a day. And no, being a nurse working shifts. Public transport isn’t available. In fact there is no public transport between Wakefield and Nelson !

A few thoughts. As a white woman having a tan and darker skin is more beautiful? The most famous beauties of our time Gigi and Bella Hadid and the Kardashians are of middle eastern decent. White women use bronzer, wear hair extensions and dye our sparse eyebrows darker to replicate the beauty of cultures with darker thicker hair. People with red hair often who have the fairest skin are the but of jokes.

If whiteness is linked to the coloniser then why do so many Asian societies (eg Japan) that were never colonised lighten their skin.

Maori in NZ means anyone with one Maori ancestor so you can be Maori and have white skin.

  Skin lightners were, and maybe still are, very popular in South Africa. Many of these caused terrible blotching patterns and other side effects in some individuals.
  My father was one of few Zulu-speaking lawyers in the area we lived and 90% or more of his clients were Zulus. One of his major lines was helping Zulu women sue the companies making this stuff.

Stuff is lamenting lower literacy rates in Aotearoa, especially that NZ is plummeting down the PISA tables.

Why could this be? They say maybe it’s due to increased usage of digital technology.

Naah, bullshit. Digital uptake has happened everywhere. If everyone is impacted, then our relative performance should be unaffected.

They they go into a long ramble about “neuro-diversity”, including dyslexia. Again, bullshit. Dyslexia impacts people globally. This does not impact NZ’s slide down the tables.

Perhaps the real reason is that the current education system in NZ encourages children to find an excuse and give up, rather than tackling their challenges and overcoming them.

I am dyslexic. It makes life harder. It means I must read things I write three times to check I wrote what I intended. I can’t read numbers longer than 4 digits unless I scan them manually with a finger.

If I had been encouraged to embrace my neuro-diversity and give up, I would not have achieved a tenth of what I have.

  Control of education policy and practises fell into the hands of left wing academics, and was modified to service the preferences of mostly female left wing teachers who hate accountability, and prefer touchy-feely-artsy topics where results are mostly unmeasurable.
  
  Modern teaching is a low status profession staffed by 3rd raters who lacked talent to make it in economically valuable fields (unlike many of the smart teachers of my youth), most of them ran screaming from STEM subjects all through their own educations and have since carried that baggage with them into their teaching. They have little interest in economically relevant subjects or pedagogical approaches that suit boys better.
  Away from top decile schools that get the teaching talent and where parents will compensate for systemic failings, NZ’s education system is 3rd rate, 25-40% not attending school regularly and leaving year 13 kids years behind their international peers in subjects that matter. The educational system of last century produced far better results than the teacher-captured mess of today.

Well, I have to say I agree with Kiri Allan. Let’s get rid of all “tokenistic use of reo” by government departments, TV News, councils … the sooner the better, as far as I’m concerned.

  I actually want to see all government departments and others use tokenistic Maori phrases.
  That way most people will see it for what it is-a big bag full of codswallop. Then, and only then, will this stupidity be brought to an end.

Always had a thing for Firemen.
Seeing them on the News tonite talking about ‘going-on-strike’ shows just how bad things have become under Liarbor.
Those poor guys who put their lives on the line for us, haven’t had a pay-rise for more than 713 days!

Compare that to say someone like MP-for-Tijuana.
He pulls 3 TIMES the money a Firefighter does….and for doing what?

FFS!!
