  Bad taste? Certainly. Offensive? Absolutely. Thoughtless, inappropriate, and just plain stupid for someone in his position? Yes to all of the above.
  
  But … worthy of getting thrown in jail for 20 weeks?? I get the feeling we’ve lost a bit of perspective here …

This one eyed Labour academic regularly posts articles for Stuff and the Overseas media like the Guardian to give his view on how great our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the Labour Party are and you only have to read this next Paragraph to realize how one eyed he appears to be.

  I certainly don’t think Rasputin Mahuta is doing a good job in any of her portfolios. But I wonder if the fact that she is not travelling has anything to do with health. You see her on TV walking with a limp and remember the kerfuffle (last year?) when a journo filmed her awkwardly trying to sit down. If that is a contributory reason then I think we should be told and she should be sacked. (Should be sacked anyway)

  Genuine question – why do you put yourself through the torment and anguish of reading that drivel? I long ago gave up on $1uffed, I won’t give them the clicks and I no longer even do the one thing I used to enjoy on their site – the Quiz.
  
  The main reason being that they tried to turn it into a “learning maori for dummies” platform, as well as using it to promote their favoured candidates, MPs and Ministers. For example, you never once saw a question such as: Who is the Leader of the ACT Party?
  
  The other reason is that the quiz usually has a few mistakes and typos, and I believe that media organisations should be accurate. $1uffed doesn’t have it on their own as far as that goes, but they’re worse than most.
  
  My mood is generally a little better for choosing to ignore partisan drivel, except of course for the partisan drivel I agree with 🙂

  Perhaps this wouldn’t be the perception if Maori didn’t talk, act, and consider themselves to be a distinct group with its own particular interests, and not New Zealanders per se. Moreover, like many other such instances, what is plainly visible to anyone with eyes and ears is cast as being attributed with “secrecy” – few think that the agenda secret, because it is plain as day.

Unfortunately visiting Wellington for a couple of days. Big contrast with the provinces where people have retained the ability to think for themselves. Face masks and pro government chatter in abundance. Apart from the fact they are indoctrinated bureaucrats I can see why the locals vote overwhelmingly Labour / Green – they are mostly slightly overweight cafe dwellers who ride bikes on the weekend – so the new world order poses no threat to their existence.

  Compliance around Christchurch city is dwindling (went onto the city earlier in the week), certainly no one looks at you funny if you dont ware one now. Lots of shops have staff that dont ware one, or will scurry to put one on when you come in then realise you dont have one and take it off. The exception being supermarkets though where there is still usually a Karen by the door who makes a big scene if you dont have one on.

  I was out last Saturday night, crowded into heaving bars with no masks in sight.
  
  I agree in a wider sense though. Was in Taupo a couple of weeks ago and many shop staff not wearing masks. Here it is still a definite thing.
  
  I went to the hospital yesterday for a respiratory test. Last time I was there the layers of people you had to pass to get into the building were many, and tiresome. Yesterday there was a bloke playing games on his phone who just said “go straight up”.

Covid misinformation: Intelligence agency’s national security briefings for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern

It’s one of New Zealand’s less-known intelligence assets and it has been providing the Prime Minister with briefings on Covid-19 misinformation. New documents reveal such concern attached to false and misleading information that it is at ‘national security’ levels.

False and misleading information created or trafficked during New Zealand’s fight against Covid-19 is being treated as a matter of national security with a key part of our intelligence apparatus involved in scanning for risks.

Documents released through the Official Information Act show disinformation and misinformation growth drew in the involvement of the National Assessments Bureau, a little-known unit inside our intelligence community.

The bureau is a unit in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) tasked with providing “intelligence assessments on events and developments of significance to New Zealand’s national security”.

It was connected with the Ministry of Health in a trial to produce an intelligence briefing for political and public service leaders on “less than criminal threats to the Covid-19 response”.

The Prime Minister has gone out of her way to avoid directly naming disinformation and misinformation as a national security issue. Even her Harvard speech avoided directly making the connection though quoted a security studies academic saying “disinformation corrodes the foundation of liberal democracy”.

The Herald used the OIA to find what briefings Ardern had after an exchange with the Prime Minister’s staff that avoided direct questions as to whether disinformation and misinformation posed a “national security” risk.

The responding material showed Ardern received a string of briefings in her role as Prime Minister – and as Minister for National Security – in the first three months of this year, which included the 23-day long Parliament protest that ended on March 2.

The Prime Minister’s chief of staff Raj Nahne said the briefings included those from the National Assessments Bureau, which would not be released.

Despite Ardern’s office refusing to link misinformation and national security, Nahne said they were being withheld on the basis release would “prejudice the security or defence of New Zealand or the international relations of the Government of New Zealand”.

The National Assessments Bureau also appeared during a “national security” briefing on February 4, two days before the protest convoy got under way.

The briefing was titled “Security challenges to New Zealand’s Covid-19 response” and included an update on security threats “including mis/dis-information and violent extremism”.

It set out DPMC’s strategy for combating increasing levels of disinformation and misinformation, which aimed to have a “coordinated approach across government and into communities” that would improve resilience to “disinformation and online harms by promoting digital literacy and critical thinking”.

It said the Government would also promote “credible information” that included “countering disinformation with facts”. The volume of false information would be targeted by making sure people knew how to report it and by working with social media companies to reduce its spread.

The briefing also raised as a “key focus” the online harassment and threats aimed at communities, “public figures and public servants”. It raised the Human Rights Commission’s “dial it down” campaign to reduce “online hate in Covid-19 discussions” but said “more still needs to be done to support victims of online harassment and threats”.

The briefing also reported on a trial “to more effectively triage and report information on less-than-criminal threats to the Covid-19 response”.

This short-lived intelligence exercise led to the National Assessments Bureau working with the Ministry of Health to provide briefings on false and misleading information.

DPMC’s National Security Group acting deputy chief executive Dan Eaton told the Herald two reports were produced highlighting trends in false or misleading information.

The practice appeared to end when the Omicron outbreak began. Eaton said “Covid-19 settings changed”, leading to agencies providing assessments on their own areas of responsibility.

Another lynch pin element of New Zealand’s counter-terrorism infrastructure – the Combined Threat Assessment Group – was consulted on the reports before they were distributed.

Eaton said “less-than-criminal threats” meant looking at false and misleading information trends “that do not necessarily lead to or are not associated with criminal acts” but contribute to “a breakdown in social cohesion, erosion of trust in democratic institutions and the undermining of public health and safety measures”.

“They have a cumulative impact, whereby the material is less extreme but consumed repeatedly, which can normalise the beliefs and narratives from which the more violent and extremist material eventuates.”
Agencies across government met fortnightly to discuss trends of false and misleading with recent work focused on Covid-19 disinformation and misinformation, he said.

The OIA documents show much of the long-term work on misinformation in New Zealand is being led by the National Security Group.

Its role is to prepare assessments on national security risks and oversee the ordering of New Zealand’s intelligence priorities.

The OIA documents included an illustration of disinformation in New Zealand since the pandemic began.

It used a word map along a timeline to show how initial conspiracy theories about the origins of Covid-19 eventually led to false claims of masks not working and untrue claims about the vaccine, leading to encouragement of anti-authority actions and distrust in the media.

Work by The Disinformation Project, an academic study of false and misleading information, showed 12 outlets were responsible for more than 70 per cent of the disinformation and misinformation that reached the New Zealand public.

    Agreed wholeheartedly NK. The Herald story from yesterday is something that should concern every one of us. Effectively, the government, via one of its many agencies, is deciding what we should be allowed to believe, or what we must dismiss as “disinformation”. That is the beginning of a very slippery slope.
    
    On a related note, it is going to be interesting to see the stance the new Justice Minister, Kiri Allan, takes on the hate speech reforms Kris Faafoi was preparing to unleash upon us. I suspect there will be an even greater determination to proceed to legislation.

  This nonsensical claim is deliberately vague and light on detail, because if they ever openly said what they claim is misinformation they would be shredded in any open debate.
  This is why they will never say what it is. People need to write to politicians and journalists and demand they tell you what exactly they are referring to.

It reports Act expressing concern that he seems to have difficulty in making a decision. Luxon really does need to make his mind up on this issue. If he supported Goldsmiths it’d go a long way to clearing this up. National needs to have a definite policy – pussyfooting around as usual won’t wash anymore.

The Prime Minister says protesters outside a school she was at on Wednesday had “zero effect” on her visit and it would be a “shame to let it detract” from the event she attended.

Jacinda Ardern visited Te Aratai College in the Christchurch suburb of Linwood on Wednesday morning to speak at the school’s official opening. It replaces the old Linwood College, which was demolished due to earthquake damage.

A group of about 50 protesters gathered outside the grounds from about 9am on Wednesday, rallying against a number of things, including the media, the Government’s Three Waters reform programme and the United Nations.

Ardern quietly arrived at the school later in the morning, entering via a back entrance away from the protesters.

She told reporters at a media standup on Wednesday afternoon that the protesters didn’t cause any changes to her plans.

“It had zero effect on the visit or the day. It’s not up to me to decide which driveway we use. Usually it’s of no material impact which entrance we come in,” Ardern said.

Ardern said she’s not concerned about the presence of protesters at events she attends.

“It very rarely has an impact on the events themselves that we were a part of. It would be a shame to let it detract from, for instance, what was otherwise a really lovely day with a group of school students excited about the reopening of the brand new school.”

It seems to me that the PM has, in fact, thrown down the gauntlet to those who dare to disagree with her. She’s saying they didn’t stop her yesterday, because she was able to enter via a back entrance.

I’ve never organised a protest before, but if I was in that business, I would take this as a challenge. I’d ensure all entrances/exits were covered. I’d leverage my contacts to get more people out to protest. I’d make sure the media knew what the purpose of the protest was and I’d appoint marshals to ensure that those protesting behaved in an orderly manner, i.e. not giving the PM any ammunition to claim she was being unfairly targeted.

Labour is only just past the half-way mark of their second term. But we have had so much exposure to the PM, especially over the last two years, that this feels like the end of a third term government. A large section of the population wants change.

So Jacinda Ardern shouldn’t cry foul if the protests about her get larger in coming weeks/months. and if it becomes more difficult for her to access sites she is visiting. By gloating at those who turned out to protest yesterday, in an orderly manner, she will have added to the resolve of protesters to do a better job next time. And when they do, she’ll only have herself to blame.

This will just add to inflationary pressures.

I am looking forward to the Government’s decision on the ‘temporary’ 25 cents per litre petrol excise cut. I just can’t see it coming back, which will leave a hole in transport funding.

My personal view is that excise should be scrapped, and all vehicles pay road user charges which can ONLY be used to fund roads. I would fund public transport from general revenue and publish twice yearly a list of public transport services in New Zealand and the subsidy per passenger. Some of those numbers would be terrifying if they were known to the public.

Paul Eagle is running some sponsored (paid for out Labour’s Parliamentary Services budget) surveys on Facebook. They ask people what issues are most important to them but a secondary objective is to harvest email addresses. However the survey questions seem to be aimed at Wellington local issues rather than national issues. It is becoming clear what his intentions in the next few months but it is a bit galling that he seems to be mounting his local ‘polling’ and campaign using taxpayers’ money.

  No ‘kindness’ in that approach, just cynical abuse of victims of crime, whilst the crimes get early release and wrap around support.

The Free Speech Union has a very interesting public letter/petition up at the moment. It concerns Bethlehem College in Tauranga, and reads thus:

Tauranga’s Bethlehem College has come under fire for expressing a belief that marriage is between one man and one woman.

The background to this is that Bethlehem College, a large, special character school, has been targeted by a gay activist because it dares to hold to a Biblical belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.

As a special character school, Bethlehem College has the legal right to teach, develop and implement programmes reflecting the faith and or educational philosophy articulated in the special character, and to establish customs and traditions that authentically reflect these. However the Ministry of Education has now reportedly has warned of “intervention” if Bethlehem College, a Christian school, does not remove its so-called ‘controversial’ biblical belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Bethlehem College isn’t asking people outside the school to accept this belief, they are merely stating their corporate belief, which they are entitled to do under Schedule 6 of the Education and Training Act 2020, which governs charter schools. Whether you share their belief or not is irrelevant, but it’s clear that Bethlehem College’s legal right to free speech and opinion is under threat.

I believe this sets a very dangerous precedent, especially in light of NK’s 8.24am post this morning about government surveillance of dissent. The FSU petition has gone from 1800 signatures around 8am this morning to in excess of 5500 now, and rising fast. Please consider signing this petition, and sending the Government and its agencies a clear message that free speech, be it religious, political or whatever is a fundamental right enjoyed by EVERY New Zealander.

  New Zealand grass fed butter is a premium product, importing substandard dairy products from countries like the USA, Australia, Europe or China for domestic use would be a fine idea, it would allow us to concentrate on higher margin markets.

    You don’t even have to look carefully to find imported butter (Lurpak, Cow&Gate etc) and imported cheese (all kinds from everywhere) in our supermarkets and specialty stores.
    NZ is extremely open to foreign dairy products which is the simple reason why prices here are reflecting world price trends. You might also consider the fact that international trade in dairy products is conducted in US dollars.
    Watch the exchange rate trend and weep.

Passenger count: 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4.
Average 16/12 = 1.33 passengers per bus.

Fuel use per passenger: about 2x as bad as them each driving around in individual Humvees.

  Our Public Service Rainbow Communities told us through the 2019 WeCount survey how important it is for colleagues, managers and others to get pronouns and names right and that this helps create a real sense of belonging and respect in the workplace.
  
  Which, for that particular small number of people, may be true. But of course, it’s not enough to try and use the “correct” pronouns for only them; no, the entire workforce is being, ahem, encouraged to conform – or, to use the Newspeak, they are being encouraged to “normalise” the use of pronouns.
  
  Pronouns are words used to refer to people (for example, she/her, he/him, or they/them). An easy way to normalise the use of pronouns is to include them in your email signature. There are a few reasons why this is beneficial:
  
  • When cisgender people include pronouns, it normalises it for everyone and protects trans and gender diverse people when they include their pronouns.
  • Having pronouns in an email signature signals you as an LGBTQIA+ ally.
  
  More Newspeak there, by the way – we all have to be labelled, so if you’re not LGBTQIA+ you become cisgender, whatever the hell that means.
  
  I wonder what happens if somebody refuses to include their pronouns. Will the Ministry of Truth be called in to have a quiet word?

  The crazy thing is that most people don’t put Mr, Mrs, Miss etc on emails so this is adding pronouns for no good reason other than virtue signalling. I don’t care what sex/gender someone identifies as, as long as they deal with the content of my emails.

Has anyone noticed the Ferald is taking down articles very quick smart that have been opened for comments and then where 95% of the comments are anti Labour & Ardern (which is most articles these days)? This happened with the article this morning on Ardern removing the pre departure tests, all of a sudden. Now that article is nowhere to be seen on the site.

Must have got the edict from their Beehive masters that if they want their covid media relief funding to continue they had better tow the line and take down any negative articles that are not showing Ardern & Labour in a favourable light. Government control of the NZ media is still alive and well. All using tax payer funds to enact this.

Stuff are running an article on how awesome subsidised transport is. A $126km trip for only $2!

Sweet! Only $2!

5 passengers on the bus, so the revenue for the trip is $10. A bus costs over $100 in diesel for a trip like that – plus wear and tear, paying the driver, RUC, council overheads, taniwha food etc. All up it must have cost $300 or more to lay on that trip – or $60 per passenger.

So while it cost the reporter $2, it cost the ratepayers and taxpayers $58 per passenger in subsidies to pretend public transport works!

But, hey it’s only public money so who cares.

WEF forum claims “Venus was once earthlike but climate made it uninhabitable.”

Bad Cattitdue substack does a detailed article on why that statement isn’t scientifically true.
But misses the obvious rebuttal, which is if Venus’s climate did radically change as WEF suggests – it is at odds with “the science” relating to earth’s warming which they reckon is caused by people, cars, airplanes, cow farts etc. Very few cows on Venus.

5453 cases today. How do they know how many community cases when most people take a RAT test at home and don’t report it to the doctor? How much longer do the daily case/death reports and ticker tape on the newspapers continue? Are they funded to print the daily case/death articles and who pays for them the govt, the WHO, Gates foundation? The UK and USA no longer report the cases?
Are we still in a pandemic now that it’s been round the world twice? The infectious notifiable disease schedule includes:
“Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza ”
“Non-seasonal influenza (capable of being transmitted between human beings)”
“Novel coronavirus capable of causing severe respiratory illness”
Is Coronavirus still Novel? We have had multiple variants? Isn’t all annual respiratory illness capable of causing severe illness in some? The other viruses require high pathogenicity and non-seasonal. Omicron is not highly pathogenic and it is the winter season. Should coronavirus still be a notifiable disease?

As was always going to happen, real world, empirical data on the impact of lockdowns was always going to come out.
Ardern, Hipkins, Bloomfield, Baker, Hendy, Wiles, Jackson – you were all wrong and you are responsible for an astonishing amount of harm. This isn’t even taking into account the damage from the experimental vaccine you forced so many to have.
