Change is the word of the day on Sunday the 9th of October 2023 but will it be enough for the Labour Party to panic and cut our Prime Minister loose to give themselves a better chance of winning the 2023 General Election after the bloody nose the Left got at the Local Body Elections yesterday.
Many Mayors payed the price for their own Stupidity of not listening to the people yesterday and ended up with a changing of the guard in many Cities and Towns.
As the Country wakes up many will be asking themselves can we do the same at the General Election in 2023 and rid ourselves of a control freak that needs to dominate people’s lives and has divided the population of New Zealand.

      Well they have shown themselves to be extremely devious so nothing is off the table leading up to the election methinks. Lavish pork barrelling and temporarily pretending to be sane stewards will probably be the go to stunts. Could still prove ineffective with the flames of inflation and debt all around them.

    I think Nats are going through their candidate process at present, some have been announced, some are still to be named, I don’t think any policy will be delivered until all candidates are in place. I note Rockape the other day who has been involved with Nat policy, he said small policy will come out soon, followed by large policy closer to the election.

        Sigh. National policy – tax cuts. That will fix everything. Landlords will be happy again. Interest deductible and no brightline, so the speculative thing will be good again. Maybe repeal 3 waters which is not really a hill of beans. And then there are the high income tax cuts – particularly for the 180 people. They deserve it …
        
        Interesting that they are now into indexing the brackets – Cullen looked at that and noted that at the time it amounted to buggerall – Key and co had 9 years to think about it (with ACT’s encouragement) and it went nowhere.
        
        Anyway – it looks like tax cuts are the solution to the nation’s problems. We can just borrow to fund super, health, education etc. Pass the problem downstream ….
        
        And there’s no way the govt needs to be involved with stuff like the affordable housing shortage. The market will – eventually – “fix” all that. Tax cuts are the solution …

        @Ian Boag: The Laboyr Govt is currently receiving over an extra $1Billion pa in tax bracket creep which dates from the last National government who had reserved it up their sleeves to offer voters at the 2017 election.
        
        Of course tax rates could & should be indexed to annual income changes but that removes the electoral carrots.

  Labour MP’s will leave Jacinda in place. She is too valuable in the ‘Squealer’ role. The only alternative is Robbo and he would be as charismatic as Andy Little was as leader. Any ‘revolt’ will be attempting to tone down racist policies (likely to remain a festering sore) and sidelining various pet policies such as three waters, broadcasting changes and the Auckland ‘tram’.. It could well be the Labour caucus will just muddle along and not take the hard decisions that need to be made.
  The ‘trick’ for National is to help facilitate these corrosive processes in Labour. The new Auckland Mayor is opposed to the ‘tram’ project and that will be another problem Labour has if it keeps promoting the project.

    I think (hope) it is too late for them. If they scrap 3 waters, the merger or the tram it just makes their list of failures even greater. Also, 3 waters is so unpopular that it will still be in people’s memory come election day.

      Petrol tax drops, and hand outs have not helped them, now blowhard Robertson says tax cuts are irresponsible, but refuses to rule the tax cuts out

    Kiwimike: We will never now get rid of race based laws. That chance was lost forever back in 2008, when both the Nats and ACT had abolishing the Maori seats as policy. Once they were gone much else could have been accomplished.
    
    Once their bums were on the seats, the Nats walked away in the opposite direction, and did a deal with the Maori Party to reduce ACT’s power and influence.
    
    Race based laws will only become more common…better get used to it.

  Media are so tied to left, like majority of Wellington, they don’t want to see the mood for change in the country.
  
  Another example, in a Herald article yesterday, Collins massive loss was being explained as conscious and unconscious bias. Auckland has shown it is rascist.
  
  The real reason Brown romped in was Aucklanders wanted “Anybody but Labour”. But with the media so biased, they find it more plausible that NZs most diverse, mixed race city is Rascist than that Labour is loathed.
  
  So why has Auckland voted ABL: Locked down, with the PM fleeing like a rat deserting a sinking ship to the freedom of Wellington, businesses smashed, children’s education smashed, societal cohesion smashed, playing Pandemic Pantomime while Auckland suffered. Record Inflation, Rates on rates – regional fuel tax, climate tax, rates +5%. Surveillance cameras installed throughout the city, aggressive fines on bus lanes, third world CBD. All thanks to Labour.

    Aucklanders will never forgive or forget that gratuitous four month lockdown highlighted by a single visit by Ardern to a couple of pre-arranged pro-Labour venues. She foresook the struggling businesses in the CBD, the hospitals, the mental health call centres, the teachers et al. She just deserted us like a rat leaving a sinking ship. She may as well step aside now because Labour is finished here. It will be interesting to see how she and her toady Ministers (think Michael Wood) cope up here when the local election dust settles. I think Three Waters and the airport tram service might just be dead ducks.

Isn’t it funny how when you don’t get the right result you need to have a review into the voting process, this from Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister and Local Government New Zealand.
While there could be minor differences it virtually the same numbers voting as at the last Local Government Election ,
why is the need for change is it because the left don’t like losing and they need to stack the odds in their favour again or is it the right political decision to make.

      I ever there was bias, it was those South Auckland wards. I understand less than a quarter of voters turned up in their own areas to vote for their guy. If they turned up, the result would have been different. This criticism of bias is just blaming older, non-Maori/PI for turning up to vote.     No we don’t hear the truth from polls, because:
    1. Many Pollsters are politicising and weaponising the results to suit their or their clients narrative
    2. Media bias, proven left bias in all NZ legacy media, results in reporting of politicised and weaponised conclusions
    3. One doesn’t bite the hand that feeds – we mistakenly think our legacy media is funded by us the taxpayer, but alas the media know their biggest customer is the Government
    4. Ardern pathologically lies and gaslights, calling any opposing views mis, dis-information. While in reality what she is saying is weaponised information. And she is openly saying she wants more power over what people communicate. Imagine the last 3 years if she could have shutdown KB, VFF etc! It would have been intolerable.
    
    Used to be a much higher standard of ethics in NZ journalism and polling and parliament, but all three now seem to be in a race to the bottom.

The come in callow and never meet the real world in the journey form College to Uni to Ministry. And they believe the BS that Governments can pick winners and drive an economy…

    Ice car fires will be while they are being used. I would imagine. So the overall damage will be limited to the car and a bit of asphalt, not a house or apartment building

    How does the average age of fleet influence this result? Machinery becomes more unreliable and more risky as it ages. ICE fleet will be significantly older than EV fleet. So logically ICE fleet would be currently more problematic than EVs. Might look a bit different in 5 years time.
    
    Another interesting stat would be on a per km basis. With limited range of EVs the rate of issue per km travelled is likely to be much higher.
    
    Also, ICE vehicles will on average be travelling faster speeds, as doing more open road motoring – so are fires more likely to occur at higher velocity? One would expect so given the old road safety mantra “the faster you go the bigger the mess”.

  That bridge explosion was a significant event. It was speculated that it was being left alone as a kind of last resort or bargaining chip. Obviously Ukraine have had enough of playing that game.
  This is sort of end-game territory with Crimea being increasingly isolated.
  This should be interesting now that the Russians are in full retreat, with depleted weapons and soldiers with the latest conscripts being months away from ready, even if they somehow had weapons to support them.

      National did not put a commissioner in any town , they did replace the corrupted ECAN which were refusing to do their proper duties and began acting as activists, the floods in canterbury were made worse because they would not let rivers be maintained, when trees and rubble are building up in rivers they choke and make floods worse

      A number of differences between Kaipara and Tauranga:
      One is geographically widespread, rural, poor community the other a major urban wealthy city.
      One struggled to find Councillors with the skill level to run their affairs, the other was divided along lines of agreeing/disagreeing with TOW partnership principal, which they should have been supported to debate properly.
      One had governance imposed for 3 years, the other had it imposed for 5 years.
      
      So essentially disagree with the Government of the days stance on policy and we will kick you out and assume power over you. For as long as we need to suppress the peasants.

The Rongotai Electorate is a very safe Labour seat… but it looks like their sitting MP Paul Eagle is not a popular chap with folks down Wellington way.

Eagle said Wellington has spoken but he remained the MP for Rongotai.

He said he would not stand down, and had not made any decisions about his future yet.

“We’ve got [Parliament] recess at the moment, and I’ve talked to the prime minister and deputy prime minister and I’ll, look when I get back to Parliament that will give me a good week to think about things.”

He would talk to the party, his family and supporters before deciding if he would run again for the seat, he said.

  His lack of confidence in himself and his ability is obviously well placed.

  I meant to edit this but screwed up the process. My extra point is how this result will impact on the feeder cities for Wellington workers from the two Hutt cities and Porirua. Central Wellington towards Courtney Place end is already dead and an unpleasant place to be. Making it more difficult for workers and shoppers to get to the city by more focus on climate change by restricting and slowing motor vehicles down and more diesel wasting public transport is not going to liven the city up.

  Long time Wellingtonian.
  
  This city is very close to being ruined.
  
  In the 90s and early 2000’s, Wellington found its mojo. However, three events have sent the city hurtling down the wrong track, a track heading for a washed out bridge.
  
  Firstly, the earthquake took out large parking buildings. Secondly, a green mayor was elected. Thirdly, Covid work-from-home.
  
  The council never opened these parking buildings. They opened cycleways, instead.
  
  Only die-hards ride bicycles in howling southerlies. There aren’t many of these people.
  
  Finding a park in town has become difficult and expensive, so many people who live in the suburbs don’t bother going into the central city unless they have to.
  
  The new motorway has opened up the Kapiti Coast.
  
  Then there is “working from home”.
  
  If that genie doesn’t go back in the bottle, then many Wellington City businesses will close. Landlords certainly won’t be able to charge high rents. The council will get increasingly desperate for revenue that will no longer arrive. Buildings won’t be built, existing stock won’t be well maintained.
  
  Apartment living will become increasingly unattractive. What’s the point? People put up with living in apartments in order to walk to work – which is now done at home – and for access to the nice shops, cafes and restaurants.
  
  Which will no longer be there.
  
  The business owners will be chasing the herd, and lower rents, in the growing suburbs, and up the coast.
  
  Add in community emergency housing in central city hotels, and the squalor and social ills that follow just as soon as you can say “Queen Street”, and the downward spiral will become irreversible.
  
  There won’t be much point in an expensive tram. And who would pay for it anyway? High frequency, cheap public transport in Wellington’s rabbit warren of suburban streets is fanciful nonsense. There aren’t enough people to pay for it. Their medium density “vibrant” living will turn into slums as the only people living in central Wellington will be students and others who have little choice. Council, in need of rates funding, will green light low quality builds.
  
  And now we have a mayor who thinks we are in the middle of a climate emergency and that bicycle lanes are pretty neat. Expensive green cliches, heading for the washed out bridge.
  
  Unless it becomes easy to get into town and park (no chance), unless people return to work in offices, en masse (seems increasingly unlikely) and unless Wellington wakes up and votes for business-friendly, pro-development mayors, it is hard to see Wellington ever recovering.
  
  Which is sad.
  
  It has a pretty harbour.

  I bet that the Labour Party’s army of consultants, strategists and PR spinners will now be asked to come up with some different ideas for next year’s general election campaign.
  They now have the knowledge and the time to re-assess how they are going to con enough people to vote them in again.
  There will be subtle changes in comms and “framing” and maybe even a few concessions re some of their more extreme policy ambitions – until after the election.
  These are people for whom political power is everything.
  Even they will be admitting that a lot of people don’t like them – not just no-account, old white people and “boomers”.
  National will have to be on top of their game even more so now – not less.

One thing to watch is whether the Government enters an undeclared war of non-cooperation with Auckland and Christchurch Councils. In Christchurch it seems clear that there is going to be a revolution in spending priorities – especially on transport – and cutting waste. That will not go down well with the Government.

Yesterday’s results show how tarnished Ardern’s image has become where it matters, here in NZ.
The votes against her endorsed candidates will have them panicking.
Labour have used council control by their bonded mayors as a means to market and implement their government policies at a local level to give them a smoother ride. This stuffs that model for them.
The threat of dismissal from the Party is irrelevant.
That alone is worthy of celebration.
