Latest Political Poll:
National and Act have a clear majority; Luxon closes the gap on Ardern in preferred Prime Minister rankings.
Chris Luxon and the National Party should be quietly confident going into Election year and the upcoming By – Election after being the first leader in 5 years to get close to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in the latest poll rankings.
But the present Prime Minister couldn’t resist playing the blame game after the poll rejected her and Labours policy by inferring that they are doing all the heavy lifting while National have nothing to offer.

So the political circus has begun and it will be interesting to see how many of the Government’s MP’s that will be in line for the chop if these results continue at Election 2023 will enjoy their Christmas Celebrations after 61% of people that were canvased said they believed our economy crisis is about to get worse.
After watching our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern speak about the poll I believe she thinks she is invincible and the team of 5 Million will back her to return as Prime Minister in the 2023 General Election.

  Sure I might be over-egging things a bit but hear me out … not only does she think she is invincible, she has never shown the capacity to admit to being wrong (when many times she has been) and every time she is caught out she doubles down.

    I don’t know how much she thinks she is invincible.
    
    But when things go wrong, then it isn’t her fault. ie. she’s the victim here.
    
    We also saw this in the way that Autie Helen jumped to her defence on Twitter, saying that Cindy was let down by those around her.

    That interview with Barry Soper was a particular shocker. Ardern tried with a straight face to claim that it’s only “entrenchment” if it requires a 75% majority, its not entrenchment if it only requires a 60%, and apparently that’s always how it’s been understood. Sorry, but bullshit. Entrenchment is any requirement for a supermajority, no matter what the exact percentage.
    
    Typical slippery Ardern deceitfulness, trying to invent a distinction that doesn’t exist to avoid admitting fault.

    I’m more interested in what they do but if I do feel the need to see what they say I read it – and not some journalist’s editing but the original speech or fully transcribed comments.
    
    Funnily enough I’ve never felt the need to do even that with Ardern or Luxon.

    Well said I thought if anyone could stop the mud slinging Prime Minister it would have been Judith Collins but really Labour kept on throwing it until they finally won.
    Now they have had ample time to upset Chris Luxon and he has made mistakes, but he has been equal to the attacks and just moved on to another subject without embarrassment and tried to learn from the mistake.
    People have under estimated his ability to pick the right moment and now you can see by Jacinda Ardern blame game they have her in a corner that is getting tighter every day.

  Whilst good news lets not get carried away. As I have posted before NZF is now highly likely to get over 5%. Winston will campaign against Maorification. NZF will take votes off grumpy Labour supporters but may also take votes off grumpy Nat supporters who feel the Nats arent saying and doing enough on the anti-Maorification front.
  Then there is the 11% undecided. Will they fall in line with this Poll?
  I believe the final result will be very close. Can you believe that 29% still prefer Cindy as PM. Shows just how delusional these people are and a danger to civilised society.

  Why are Maori allowed a free pass for outdated sexist attitudes when a non Maori expressing similar would have bought the house down.
  We have streets being renamed , statues torn down, males being expunged from history for doing and saying what was accepted and the norms of the day. But Maori get a pass and it’s ok for them to be sexist and racist.
  The attitudes and entitlements this Government is engendering in Maori will ultimately dwarf the harm caused to Maori by war and colonialism. There comes a point where the 83% will say enough

Details such as age, location, political leanings, religious thoughts, education, work history, community/personal interests etc etc

      You have to be VERY careful when disclosing any sort of information about yourself in any online forum, because in this age of Facebook, Twitter, blogs, online forums, onine hobby sites, and so on, it is far too easy to reveal more than you might want to or realise.
      
      Taken in isolation, you might be quite confident that the information you provide on Kiwiblog is insufficient to identify yourself. But chances are, you also post on other forums or sites, and it is unbelievably easy for people to glean snippets of information from multiple sources, join the dots and build up a pretty accurate portrait of who you are.
      
      I’m by no means heavily involved in social media and the like, but I worked out the identities of two posters on Kiwiblog some months ago, simply from joining the dots on Facebook posts they had made to a community group I belong to.
      
      It really is scarily simple in many cases and doesn’t require any great detective work. I wasn’t even trying to identify these people; I just saw some Facebook posts in the community group and the connection clicked. So be careful.

      I have had the same phone number for over forty years (some digits added to make it 7 numbers)
      Everytime I do something with spark my number goes back on the white pages online. I am aware of it and remove it.

I explain that that right leaning blogs in New Zealand have been put under police surveillance before and a couple of years ago journalists disclosed they had been investigating conversation threads and threatened to print names of commenters.

1 – The Greens Party -not Us – did it and it was a total bloody surprise!

“I think the important thing here is that regardless we are taking ownership of this as a team,” Ardern said. “It was a SOP (Supplementary Orders Paper) that came from another Party but we as a team when it came before the House voted in favour of it. We agree that was a mistake, not because of the subject matter – we don’t want to privatise water assets, but because of the use of entrenchment.
… But Bridge pushed back, saying surely it is “important for people at home to know was this just incompetence, negligence, was there something machiavellian going on here that you did know about the provision but you’re now claiming…”
But Ardern jumped in saying, “sometimes these things are actually just simple – a mistake was made”.
“Again I think it is important to point out this was not a change or an amendment that was drafted by the Government or a Minister, it was from another Party,” Ardern said.

… Ardren pushed back on the interruption saying: “I think the context is useful Ryan because again, I think actually the context helps a little bit because we will have a number of amendments that will come through from other parties, a number of them for any given Bill there could be well over a dozen depending on the Bill. If it’s controversial, there can be hundreds.

“So this was put forward by another party. Yes, we voted in favour of it. Our view is we shouldn’t have done that.
…” I think I’ve still given as much explanation on this as I can without becoming repetitive,” Ardern responded.

2 – Nanaia knew though, there had been “negotiations” with Eugenie Sage!

Nanaia Mahuta as the responsible minister, however, knew exactly what was going on. … …. At some point after that, the discussion between the Greens and Labour turned to a 60 percent threshold instead, something they could get over the line without needing any others.

Sage told RNZ there had been “negotiations” with the minister, but wouldn’t put a date on it. She defended putting up the amendment without proactively flagging it publicly, saying anyone who had read the select committee report would know the Greens’ position

  First, it is well past time when an interviewer asks her to stop blathering as they bring her back to the point.
  
  Second the observation needs to be made that it is hard to call a team to account for a stuff up, that falls to the leader.

How wrong she is. The opposition just need to say “why isn’t xyz included?’, ‘in power we will extend the RC to cover xyz”, ‘what are you hiding, you are not the most transparent government’ etc.

  Thirty or so years ago one of my daughters and her form year were going to a Maori event of some sort in Wellington.
  The girls were told that those menstruating could not enter parts of the event.
  My then 14-year-old daughter’s period had started. The shibboleth worried her: should she observe it (and thus announce to everybody her body was performing a normal function) or should she ignore it and thus risk embarrassment if she should be rumbled.
  She asked me what I thought. ‘Ignore it,’ I said. ‘It’s no-one else’s business.’
  She did. And so did all the other girls including young wahine.
  Interestingly her mainly-white state girls college never challenged the Maori shibboleth.

      Historically most women menstruated very infrequently compared to modern women, they matured later, and were married off young and pregnant or breastfeeding most of the time. Modern pervasive gynecological health issues might have a lot to do with that huge change.

    For example that which Thais have always called a wat, is a temple in English.
    The NZ Embassy is located on Thanon Witthayu, aka Wireless Rd to expats.

      The CIA World Factbook, one of the best sources of geographic information, says that in Thailand English is “a secondary language of the elite”. Can we assume Bangkok’s English names then are for tourists?
      
      In NZ, Maori names cannot be for tourists.
      
      The Woke are sometimes stupid in the way they promote Maori language to the 90 per cent who don’t speak it, and they are trying to force Maori words into (NZ) English, which is unnecessary and crass.
      
      An example of their pig-headedness is the change in road signs warning motorists they are nearing a school. “Kura” is being displayed above, and thus with priority over, “School”.
      
      When fractions of a second may count on a highway, it’s stupid to prioritise Wokeness above safety. From infancy, we learn in English to read from left to right, then from top to bottom. We notice the top word first.

Many a man at the time would have said, in all sincerity and honest concern, that neither were fit places for women, that women had their own, sacred sphere and calling in life and that their entry into the male sphere would dishonour both sexes.

    It was customary they didn’t do any men’s work: building, hard labouring, soldiering,…
    
    It was also customary to get preggy and make babies. What’s the point of expending extensive educational resources on someone destined to become a mother?
    
    Of course things have changed now: diesel engines have replaced brute strength. Soldiering is less about physical strength too. Contraception and improved maternity care mean reduced family sizes and it is worthwhile investing in female brains.

    My old man has been an active member of The Wellington Club for decades – and for thirty years maintained an office directly opposite on The Terrace. As a young fella I’d regularly join him for lunches there and father/son dinners etc.
    
    The Club has been in existence since 1841.
    
    The Club membership had a custom, ie it was customary, that while women were very and openly welcome as guests, membership was limited to men.
    
    This changed in 1994, from memory, when after years and years of pressure and all sorts of name-calling, accusations and slurs from non-members the membership chose to open membership applications to women.
    
    I personally was in two minds over it all in that I thought it was right and proper that private citizens could operate a club or anything else according to the rules they voluntarily established and it was no one else’s business. And if people wanted a mixed-gender club then go and set one up!
    
    (I’ve got to say my view has only grown stronger over the years.)
    
    Because of this I now fully expect all those worthies who called Club members sexist pigs, dinosaurs, privileged men, etc to now turn their guns on to Maori sexism.

  In New Zealand, we are constantly told that sexism is wrong – unless it’s in the context of “Māori tikanga”, in which case it’s fine.
  
  In New Zealand, we treat women as equals, and afford them the same rights as men – unless they want to speak on a marae.
  
  In New Zealand, saying prayers in a public forum is frowned upon – unless it’s a “karakia” in which case woe betide anybody who doesn’t think it should be recited or doesn’t want to join in.

  Pharmac especially needs to be called out, hopefully by the Public Service Commission. The role of journalists is to break stories. Instead Pharmac tried to censor them so it could have its stage managed release of the story with their chosen media outlet.

    This particular drug was only approved for use in the US in 2019, and in the EU in 2020.

    A better idea would be for Party list places to be filled by those who were not successful in being elected in an electorate, in descending order of % of votes won. For example, Invercargill was won by Penny Simmonds by 224 votes. She got 44.45% of the votes cast. Liz Craig got 43.89%, which would probably be one of the highest vote shares of non-winning candidates for her Party, so she would become a list MP.
    
    That would require everyone to stand in an electorate and encourage them to work hard to appeal to their electorate voters.

      My suggestion for reforming MMP would include requiring all those standing for election to register in an electorate, and to be eligible for appointment to a list position, to obtain at least 10% of the the votes in that electorate.
      
      This would cull out the no-names and time wasters such as Logie.
      
      Exemptions could be considered for party leaders and the Speaker.

So the Chief Ombudsman is to take a look at whether freedom of information requests are being delayed or ‘managed’ by certain departments, including politically.

One thing the review could do is gather information from the site fyi.org.nz. Data is right there, including a record of how long the response took and how complete it was. Folk who put OIA requests through via the site can and should respond to the review’s invitation to requesters – good bad or indifferent. Fast and easy as the data is there already.

(Noticed Inland Revenue is not among the departments under scrutiny – my experience with IRD and the OIA has been good and timely, so well done them.)

The enterprises crying out for workers will find that their vacancies disappear with a different government. That would be due to the thousands of public sector employees and contractors lining up for sandwich-making jobs as their teams are shut down.

Of course they will realise that the dole pays better and is a lot more fun than making sammies at 6 am, so they will score a holiday before that new government starts ‘managing’ their job seeking and their income.

      Not defending Judith or Chris Bishop, but they made calls based on the information they had at the time. I bet knowing what they know now, they would not have made the call to demand people be vaxxed.
      
      I myself got two jabs as, frankly, being a business owner I had to choose between a bad choice and a less bad one. It was only after the second (and my reaction to it) that I questioned whether I had made the right personal call.
      
      In hindsight, knowing what I know now, I would never had taken a vaccine. But hindsight is a wonderful teacher.
      
      We certainly should not have allowed the vitriol directed to those who were unvaxxed. Nor the mandates. But we were lied to by a government hell bent on power and manipulation.
      
      We were allowed to not get the jab. Until we weren’t.
      
      2020-2021 will go down in history as a shameful period in our history. We were all gaslighted on a global stage.

I do hope that Craig Jepson, the Mayor of Kaipara, is able to prevail in his effort to keep his council meetings secular.
I see that The Great Kiwi Clobbering Machine of our conformist media and activist Maoris are ganging up on him because of his refusal to allow a councillor to utter a karakia before meetings.
Dame Naida Glavish says she and other Maori leaders are going ‘to hui’ with him whether he wants it or not.
Bullying?
There is absolutely no reason for any meeting in New Zealand – whether around a council table or in a meeting room in the government bureaucracy or in Parliament itself – to begin with a karakia, a Hail Mary or Our father, or some other religious utterance.
Meng Foon the other day said – of course he would – that Maori needed a safe space in which to ‘honour Te Tiriti’.
That’s fine: there’s nothing to stop the councillor concerned from reciting a karakia in her own kitchen.
She can do it on her marae. She can do it in her church.
This seems to me as much about embedding tikanga and Te Ao Maori into this country’s public life as it is about praying to different gods not worshipped by other people.

  People of many different faiths and none come together in many public functions. Starting with Christian prayer has been deemed offensive to non-Christians. But removing all expression of any faith can be just as offensive to people of faith – it often looks like imposed atheism.
  
  I would suggest the answer is to open the Council chamber, perhaps 15 minutes before the meeting starts, for any person who wishes to do so to make their own (silent) prayer or karakia before the meeting. This recognises that many spiritual practices are properly conducted in the place where the meeting is to occur and provides the opportunity for people of faith to bring their “whole selves” to work.
  
  Those not wishing to participate may be silently present, or arrive after the designated silent time, at which point the meeting starts.

  Just getting over my first lot. Was around 48 hours of feeling like shit, bounced back fast but lingering (2 weeks after first positive) issues – tiredness, shortness of breath.
  
  The weirdest thing – as I havent had flu in well over 30 years – was the sweats as my body fought the infection on the first night I tested positive. Truly epic sweats. The gorgeous blond mopped my fevered brow and suggested it was beyond man flu.

  I tested positive a couple of weeks ago, first time I’ve had it that I know of. As an oldie, the doc prescribed Paxlovid over the phone, although it was already starting to subside. Took the course but I don’t really know if it made any difference. Without testing, I would have thought it was just a normal head cold.

    Haven’t had it – that I know of. Unvaxxed – no mask – been around plenty of people who went down with it next day. Did the Vit.D & zinc thing.
    One possible exception – in October 2021 woke up one morning, slightly sore throat, slightly headachey, swollen glands – lasted 3 days, did nothing. Wife or friends never caught anything, so I think it was nothing. Doctor reckoned I should get a blood test, because they have very little information on how the unvaxxed fared. Might do it, just for a giggle – BUT $120 cost is no fun for an 80 y/o Pensh. 😆

Am delighighted that Pharmac have reached a provisional agreement re Trikafata for those suffering from a terrible disease and giving them, it is a claim, of up to 27 more years of life.
Normal annual costs are reported at $330,000 per person, so whatever a final cost agreement has been reached, this is one hell of a lot of money for what is believed to be some 350 people.
I totally support Pharmac and their expertise, but what else could the total of up to 27 years per sufferer buy ?

  Sure, it is nice to think we can do everything for everyone but the reality is that we cannot.
  
  If we’re spending $9 per patient just on this one medication we’re probably spending close to the same again on the rest of their care that is prolonged by taking the meds.
  
  That ends up probably around $20M per patient. $7bn for 350 patients.
  
  The question isn’t really what’s the best we can do for these 350 people, but what’s the best we can do for society with $7bn.

  Pharmac has a rule-based thing based on “qalys” – years of quality life from an intervention. The first rationing step is the total funds available, then I guess the qaly thing comes next.

  I would guess that Pharmac have negotiated a low enough price that the qaly sums work. IIRC the only time that Pharmac were told to do something was when Key told then to fund Herceptin. There was a bit of pushback from this as most people realised this approach was going to drastically increase the price of drugs. AFAIK it hasn’t happened again.

They are Twitters largest advertiser.
Guess some were wrong about Twitter going bust. They seem to be managing fine without those 5000(!) staff they let go too. Quite amazing the low hours they worked and the perks they got. Would love a Chef at our office.

Imagine you paid upfront in full for a particular service, but then the pesky provider fails to deliver you what was agreed, despite pocketing your moolah?

Labour has paid the Team of $55 million good money in advertising and subsidies for propaganda purposes.

Willie’s quite reasonable expectation seems to be that the Team of $55 million should be Labour lickspittles, and bow and scrape to the government. This seems only fair and reasonable, given the sums paid to secure this outcome.

It is hard to understand the Team of $55 million being so ungrateful.

Did she support 60% entrenchment clause in the caucus meeting?

I heard her interviewed by both Mr Soper and Mr Bridge. She wouldn’t give a straight answer to their questions.

I hope there is some leak from the Labour party caucus, because at the moment, this issue is not clear.

The issue is important because it speaks to the honesty (or dishonesty) of Cindy.

It’s a shame Dr Sharma is no longer in the Labour caucus! He would tell us…

A friend of mine went to see Jordan Peterson speak in Christchurch a few days ago. (I wish I had known he was here.)
She said two things stood out particularly for her.
a) A significant proportion of the large crowd appeared to be in the 20-40 age bracket, and many of those were dressed in suits.
b) There was an obvious hunger for what Jordan had to say. They applauded loudly and regularly at his comments.
She was both surprised and hugely encouraged. If this was indicative, perhaps an unexpected groundswell may be occurring, flying below the radar.

With the announcement that ‘Gib-Board’ will rise in price by more than 15% next month, I suggested to my partner’s mother she might be better to buy a few pallets of that, rather than fix a TD @ 5.2% for three years.

The hack didn’t target the ministry’s systems directly, it said. Rather the external company affected provides IT services to a third-party provider the ministry has contracts with.
