  Never mind the bollocks – thanks for linking to that article. Morgan Godfrey looks like what I imagine a leftist reporter would look like. Certainly he is very kind to our Minister of Finance complimenting him on his careful management of our finances. Others of us are less kind and say this government spends money like a drunken sailor on shore leave. Indeed there are commentators on this blog who feel that I am being unkind to drunken sailors on shore leave when I compare them with the labour government!
  
  Regarding Willie Jackson he appears to be in the forefront of race baiting. The fact of the matter is that this government wants to establish co-governance. They sincerely believe that the Treaty of Waitangi is a partnership and that Maori people should have a 50% say in how the country is run. Of course that is the end of liberal democracy as we know it because we would no longer have one person one vote. Under co-governance a person with Maori ancestors would have the equivalent of five votes as compared to the one vote of the person who doesn’t have Maori ancestors. How this reverse apartheid is going to lead to harmony in our nation is beyond me?
  
  The other thing is that co-governance, which is where our country is heading now, is leading to a renaissance of Maori culture. Now if Maori culture is about anything it’s about tribalism. So we are witnessing a return to tribalism and various tribes controlling various territories. Think Hone Harawira setting up roadblocks to decide who can come into his tribal territory and think tribes controlling the Uruwera and setting fire to DOC huts.
  
  So co-governance is not an academic debate as Morgan Godfrey says. It is something real and something happening before our eyes. The final goal is the People’s Socialist Republic of Aotearoa. Morgan Godfrey would like us to relax and make ourselves comfortable as the comrades lead us towards our Communist utopia.

      The Jacksons have been stalwarts of NZ’s Left of Left for many decades. He has been a trade union organiser, and was at one stage the youngest president of any of the country’s freezing-worker unions.

        Thanks for that. I knew Willie had a strong leftist background and was involved in unions. I did not know he was divorced. He didn’t know the TOW then, and I’m sure he only follows what he is told now. He is part of the Elite Maori Coup.

    Since Godfrey apparently admires WJ because he won’t waste time in academic debates about co-governance, does he equally admire Ardern and Fa’afoi for not wasting time debating hate speech or, to go back further in time, admire Geoffrey Palmer for not wasting his fellow cabinet members’ time debating the meaning of the principles of the ToW?
    
    Sometimes words really matter.
    
    Still, if WJ dismisses as academic the minutely detailed debate in universities about the ‘true meaning’ of the ToW, I guess neither he nor Godfrey will object to those of us sceptical of those interpretations and their use to guide every part of the state.

    As for the Urewera where such things have not been infrequent for decades including when National was in Government. It was a National Minister who facilitated the current agreement which by your calculation must make him a Communist, they seem to be everywhere in your life and particularly in your posts.
    You also didn’t observe that it wasn’t just Doc huts that have distressed some local families associated with them, but I assume that wouldn’t bother you.

      Brian McDonald – thank you for your comments. Regarding the Harawira roadblocks it was a response to covid. However it was also racist. It is an example of the special privilege that only Maori people get. Imagine if in 2020 myself or indeed any other white person, got together with a group of other white people and set up a roadblock, say at the top of the Rimutakas, to stop any Wellington people coming to the Wairarapa and bringing covid. How long do you think it would take for that roadblock to be dismantled by the local police? I would say it would take about 20 minutes for the police at Featherston and Upper Hutt to arrive and dismantle the roadblock and possibly arrest any of the perpetrators. They would absolutely not allow white people to stop other people coming into their territory. But it’s different when Maori people do it. That is the reverse apartheid we are being subject to.
      
      Regarding the Ureweras, yes the rot began with a former National minister. And yes I do think he was hopelessly deluded. So National have a fair share of the blame. However it is manifestly true that Labour has co-governance on steroids and is advancing the reverse apartheid agenda much faster than anyone could possibly imagine. We are losing our country and I’m sure that you and I can be in agreement – that is no good.

        I was brought up in the northern ‘back blocks’ of Hawkes Bay. The Maori culture was very present in our every-day European lives, and for the most part we all muddled along together.
        However, the Urewera people were another breed entirely and were generally left to their own devices because of their ‘ see if you can make us’ attitude towards any but their own tribe. They would disappear into the bush for years.
        I was somewhat surprised when I heard that Treaty negotiations were to be held, but not at all surprised when it took so long to get any agreement.

      You do see it constantly. When pushed about the obvious leftiness of the journos – usually by asking for the RW journos to be identified, which comes to a tiny number – the argument shifts to editors and owners. Apparently by definition a private media source is Right Wing because it’s part of the capitalist system: I’ve seen that argument made explicitly on occasion but usually it’s just implicit with the “owners” assertion.
      
      One question I always ask them is why we RW’s have increasingly abandoned the MSM, despite them being so very RW. Never an answer to that – although one person once said that it was only Extreme, Far, Alt… Righties like me that thought that. 🙂

I was down at Oriental Bay the other day. The water was a millpond. But there on the beach was a surf lifesaving team of three, complete with the elevated watchers box & all the kit.

I thought to myself that this misplacement of resources sums up the current government. They’ve identified a problem & spent taxpayer money but it’s been applied in the wrong area & therefore achieved little – I cannot recall any beachgoer ever drowning at Oriental Bay. Looks good to the undiscerning though.

    Thanks Maggy, I overlooked that one. But, I note that the life guards on duty completely missed him; it wasn’t until a swimmer alerted them that they swung into action. I’m not blaming the life guards – from the report it seems that a sudden heart attack carried him off, which is not what surf life guards are for. My point is that surf life guards would be better deployed at practically any other beach in the country.

    That person almost certainly had a heart attack. When someone is drowning they are thrashing around, in a millpond like Oriental Bay it would have been quickly noticed and someone would have helped them.
    
    People die all the time from many reasons, some are preventable and some aren’t. Limited resources need allocated wisely and there are many places in the country that could use lifeguards more than Oriental Bay.
    
    It’s actually a good analogy for the moronic ideologues currently inhabiting the Beehive. “zero road deaths”, “zero carbon”, making tobacco illegal and the most moronic policy possibly ever, the attempt to “eliminate covid.”
    
    Cost/benefit might sound cold and heartless, but in a world of limited time and resources, it’s the best way to allocate these things.

      We have no idea how many successful rescues there have been at Oriental Bay in the following summers… such events don’t get reported.
      
      When you have the public en masse at the beach, anything can happen.
      
      Crikey, sometimes there’s just me & my mate swimming laps at our local pool… but GDC ensures there’s at least one staffer on watch duty in case one of us croaks.

        Maggy – fair enough. If they have the numbers to patrol it then that’s great. As per swimming pools which generally have guards around. I’m only making the point that resources often have to be allocated on needs.

    With funding from Wellington Council? Doesn’t make sense – very few non-surf beaches are patrolled anywhere. Mission Bay in Auckland is even more popular than Oriental and has no patrols. Pools are a different matter.

    but some Councils hire Surf life-savers for a short period during summer months..
    
    However, last year The Government announced an annual contribution ($9.4M) to Surf Life-Saving.

    There was talk of 20 cents per liter, but then that claim went down to 10 cents a liter. That is $20 million a day. How the hell can Auckland sustain that?
    Watercare currently charges Aucklanders 0.001594 cents a litre for water, or $1.594 cents for 1000 litres.

It is rather funny at times although mostly painfully pathetic to watch the media hacks trying to find ways to justify the efforts of the Ardern Govt. This morning it was the crazed socialist Morgan Godfrey trying to persuade us Willie Jackson was a high performing Minister. There has even been the odd person musing whether Jackson is the power behind the elitist Maori push but forget that. At his best he is a loose mouth, driven by arrogance and bully boy tactics.

In November, Andrew Milburn, retired U.S. Marine colonel Deputy Commander of Special Operations Command Central who created the Mozart Group PMC, gave an interview on YouTube.

In the 2hours long interview he provided a lot of interesting details of his military experience, including in Ukraine. He also described his attitude towards the country he came to “protect against the Russian invaders”.

“A corrupt, fucked up society. I’m not a big fan of Ukraine. Ukrainians violate the Hague Convention. They should not film their crimes on video, so as not to attract the attention of the media. Yes, Ukrainians are violating… They film a number of things they do with prisoners of war, violating the law on military conflicts. Guys, the murder of Russian prisoners (a common thing).

It’s not about Ukraine. I had the Ukrainian flag tied to my bag, but I’m not “Oh my God, Ukraine is so awesome!” No, cause… fucked up people are running Ukraine!”

      Paper-book records have shown they can last for many centuries, while computer records, including digital books, face new problems.
      
      These include outmoded software to read them, and potential problems with storing them – unless archivists use something like the special “M discs” with more durable material replacing the dye layer of most convention CDs and DVDs.

    Lots of rumours regarding events in Ukraine. Fog of war etc. I tend to ignore most of it. After almost 3 years of lies and narrative control from the Ardern government I can’t begin to imagine how much information warfare is going on from both sides in Ukraine.
    Mozart group was set up as a counter to the Wagner Group. Apparently things aren’t going too well for them. But I have no way of verifying the accuracy of this article.
    
    Retired Marine Corps Colonel Andrew Milburn, who leads the American mercenaries, explained that members of his group cannot stay in hotels now because they are being targeted by Russian missiles. I don’t recall his name but an ex-Labour member is a leader and spokesman for Dairy owners. Rather than urge his members to drop tobacco and vaping products for safety instead seeks the tax to be reduced on tobacco products.
Clearly, he doesn’t speak for all Dairy owners because the number of regular smokers has dropped, and the number of Dairies holding tobacco stock or vape products has also fallen.
When the prohibition idea was first mooted many correctly predicted it would lead to a black market. But if the number of smokers continues to fall so will the black market. The Indian political aspirant has said smokehouses will emerge.
NZ wiped out the heroin trade with methadone eventually, could we next see the medical distribution of vapes instead of chimney smoke around the hood during summer and landlords complaining of yellow walls as the “meth cleaners” add another service. Maybe even get to test nicotine levels themselves as a free service and quote option.

Seems a captive Clientele will pay almost whatever is charged by Veterinarian Companies .
Perception seems to suggest the mentioned Company charges are out of control .

Our Mikey is slipping up – or maybe its just the name association.
Today is the Memorial of St. Thomas Becket – archbishop of Canterbury, who was murdered on the steps of Canterbury Cathedral on this day in 1170 by a couple of King Henry II’s knights who took to heart an exclamation of Henry “Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest”. Henry & Thomas were good friends in earlier times. Henry did penance by accepting some lashes for St. Thomas’s death.
I claim him as a ancestor – but don’t really know. He was born in London in 1118. I have ancestors in London traced back to the 17 century but can’t go back any further. There is/was a brick works on the Thames – Beckett’s Bricks – that was owned by my family. In the 1970’s I was manager in Rotorua of Fisher Windows, and my production manager had come from London & served his time with his father as a carpenter – they bought their bricks from Beckett’s Bricks.

      For what it’s worth, Don, my wife’s family tree includes Henry II. We both have ancestors who were allegedly nobility in Normandy, and possibly accompanied William to England. A very high proportion of our ancestors did things that we would not want to boast about, so we take these very lightly. Sadly, all the titles and lands vanished/dissipated within a couple of centuries, and maybe that was a good thing. Keeps us grounded.

        The other side (maternal) of my family, the Nicholsons, were landowners in & around Cheshire, the family tree dates back to the 13th.century. They were lawyers & soldiers & some clergy. They were Catholic, and refused to sign the document as King Henry VIII being head of the Church, so they progresively had portions of land confiscated, so that now there only remains a few acres and the original dwellings – Baddesley-Clinton Hall, and Thelwall Hall,, where some of my relations still live.
        The of course, there’s the Cornish,Scottish, & Saxon sides – but I’m getting boring. 🙂

      I think your grasp of medieval history, and church history and theology, might be a bit weak, Don.
      Bishops, of course, were (and probably still are) princes of the church and so came complete with thrones and palaces and rituals to rival or even surpass secular monarchs.
      Becket, notoriously, was of low birth and scant education and made his name as an enforcer for Henry II. It was his betrayal of his master for his ill-conceived notion that he was now the King’s superior that cost him his life, but earned him the worship, and the church the treasure, of generations of credulous pilgrims.

        A fair response mike. I guess from your perspective you see the negatives while from my perspective I see the positives. You are partly correct WRT bishops, how they were treated in medieval times, but not so much now. The bishops are actualyy the successors of the apostles – the title ‘prince of the Church’ is reserved to cardinals.
        I don’t think Beckett was necesarily of low birth – after all, in their youth, Henry & Thomas were friends as I understand it; but certainly of much lesser birth than Henry.

    We do know the following:
    – The Sinovac & similar Chinese vaccinations had a efficacy down around the 8 to 10% even for the first variant. we can’t trust any of the medical information coming out of China, but we can trust what happens to people vaccinated in China who then go overseas and get checked and/or sick
    – The lockdowns have provided the virus the opportunity to mutate competitively with itself – because lockdowns reduce the circulation of milder variants amongst the population which would otherwise confer better natural immunity
    – Typically, a rapidly spreading virus tends to become less harmful as it changes because this helps it survive. If the virus kills too many of its hosts, it is more likely to die out. If it becomes milder, it spreads further. But when we interfere by preventing it spreading rapidly we encourage the development of more pathogenic versions.
    – There is an assumption that people are in hospital because of Covid when many of them are in hospital with Covid. If they are in hospital because they have more severe underlying conditions, we are bringing them together where the more virulent i.e. nasty virus variants cannot just infect the more medically vulnerable, but can spread to staff, visitors and other patients so they get to spread easier while the milder variants in the community find spreading harder under the lockdown.
    – And there is one other happening which has gone under most of the mainstream media radar, but it is important: the numbers of dead in China is increasing very rapidly but it’s mostly the elderly. Because of the proximity of old people to other generations in China due to intergenerational living (which is also a major feature of Italian life, which explains the significant death rate in the Italian elderly when the Chinese first came over from Wuhan to Italy via Milan during Chinese New Year at the start of the outbreak…), this provides the ideal way to cull the population of the no-longer productive while terrifying the productive.

  But with St.Thomas’s death and elevation to sainthood by martyrdom, Canterbury became one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in the medieval period. It is about a pilgrimage to Canterbury that Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales.

      A person comes from two parents, four grandparents, eight great-great grandparents, the number of progenitors going up by two to the power of one, power of two, power of three … and on.
      
      Say, 2 to the power of n, where n begins with your parents, and continues your grandparents as n+1, great-grandparents n+2.
      
      When we get to 35 generations back, or n to the power of 35, we have about 34.3 billion progenitors.
      
      That seems enormous and impossible.

        I think mike was referring to Edward I – king about 200 years after William the Conqueror, who initiated the clearances in Scotland, and wanted to breed them out because they were so bolshie – and still are .

  And in a wider view every culture on earth had to find some mechanism for culling unstoppable excess fertility. Kids and young adults had to be killed off somehow via starvation, disease, capital punishment, slavery, warfare, slavery, infanticide, monastic orders etc. Every single culture had some mix of methods, direct or indirect. Socking it to the Widely Woke BBC …

A group of British academics has accused the BBC of “rewriting British history to promote a Woke agenda”.

The group, including war historian Andrew Robert and Oxford lecturer Marie Kawthar Daouda, says the BBC needs to stop apologising for British history.

Members accuse the BBC of “systemic failure” to present a rounded picture of the past.

They allege BBC documentaries on subjects including slavery, colonialism and the Irish famine distort the truth about Britain’s past through inaccuracy or omitting important facts.

Roberts accuses the BBC of pursuing a “fatwa” against Sir Winston Churchill.

The Telegraph says the historians compiled a report through the group History Reclaimed, whose co-editors are David Abulafia and Robert Tombs – senior professors at Cambridge. Supporters include Lord Chartres, the former Bishop of London; and academics Vernon Bogdanor, Niall Ferguson, and Lawrence Goldman.

We need NZ culture warriors to stand against the anti-British warping of New Zealand history, especially as brain washing is about to begin in our primary schools.

History Reclaimed says the “Culture Wars” are particularly virulent in North America, Australia and New Zealand, and Britain.

Without going all post-modernist and describing all history as literature, it helps to bear in mind that one of Europe’s great intellectuals one described history as ‘the argument without end’.

I watched a documentary about the einsatzgruppen. It mentioned that eleven out of the twenty-one leaders of this mobile killing unit had Phd’s. One of the leaders actually had two Phds.

Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich was highly educated himself, and preferred to hire extremely intelligent individuals to oversee his mass murder diktats.

The job of the leaders of the einsatzgruppen entailed convincing soldiers to murder first men, and then women and children, initially by machine gunning groups of people into pits.

The advantage of using “expert” university educated people in this role is that these people tend to be very adept at rhetoric. The intellectuals were naturally skilled at conducting convincing propaganda as to why these harmless women and children were supposedly an existential threat to the German people.

It all seems quite insane, and although perhaps fortunately history won’t repeat this, history does rhyme.

It occurred to me that socialist governments still use government funded “experts” to exhort fear, against imagined enemies. We have just experienced a so-called “war” on a virus, where an imaginary “white supremacist far-right conspiracy” was conjured up, to justify quite extraordinary human rights abuses.

It is little wonder that ordinary people lose faith in the so-called “experts”.

There needs to be some accountability and responsibility when these “experts” get it all wrong, as they did during the Covid hoax. Alas, I doubt this will ever happen…

  Yep, Germany was at the front of academic education in the lead up to World War 2. The double Ph.D. honorific of “Dr-Dr” wasn’t rare.
  
  Test pilot Eric (Winkle) Brown, who led the British evaluation of German aircraft at the war’s end, concluded the Germans were well ahead of America and Britain in aviation technology. The Moon landings were made on developments from Nazi technology.
  
  In the Ph.D race, NZ isn’t doing badly. Fed by the taxpayer we have hundreds of consultants with Ph.D.s in environmental studies, social welfare, and a range of other ‘soft-science’ subjects.

    All I can say is NZ is outside the top 8 countries in PhDs per capita, well behind places like Slovenia and Luxembourg, but probably about par with the US, UK and Australia.
    You possibly notice more NZ PhDs in subjects of which you disapprove because you are looking for things to offend you.

  Peak cricket commentary in NZ occurred years ago during a particularly somnolent period of play when the commentators gave up on the game and kept the listening public amused with halarious tales from their own playing days.
  Everyone in the crowd was listening on their transistors and gales of laughter livened up the Basin for an hour or so.
  The players were totally bemused because they knew the game itself was no laughing matter. In fact it was deadly dull.
  Never happened again.
