Just to get Milky wound up, looks like as predicted, NZ sports fans are voting with their money and feet by not showing interest is the soccer. Even with the offer of free tickets. This is despite all the promos by elites and politicians.

      Safety lectures are a good example, among a myriad, of the feminisation of society. Men and women have completely different ways of thinking, because they are different. You’d have to have never met a woman to seriously believe that the only real difference is genitalia. A feminine society will be fundamentally different to a masculine one, which is why Feminism is a tool for social subversion.
      
      Men tend to be more impersonal and prone to thinking in abstractions and considering long term consequences, women more personal, emotional and risk averse (hence safety lectures) and think in the short term.
      
      Hence, Mum will worry about little Jonny climbing a tree and hurting himself, whereas Dad will understand that, even if there’s a chance he’ll break an arm, the long term benefits that come from Jonny “conquering” a tree outweigh that risk.

  The less authentic and aligned with objective reality an idea is, the more it has to be artificially promoted, sustained and enforced by an agency or bureaucracy. You could say that this is the case with the “women’s equality” in general – if the idea wasn’t enforced by law and males were socially pressured to assent to allowing it in practice, it would evaporate overnight because it is not objectively true.
  
  Women are fantastic and their attributes complement men, just as men’s attributes complement women. That is the objective reality, not “equality” which is a delusional political ideology. However, except in some rare examples, their sporting prowess is such that I would never see much value in watching women play sport, even if it is at an “elite” level (which, in terms of football, is about the level of a competent under 15 male age group team).

        I don’t think anyone is saying womens sport is if little value full stop. That would be untrue.
        There is nothing wrong with someone not liking what you like. Its nothing personal. It is not a judgement of the worth of the participants .

  I thought the Soccer authorities missed a trick by not encouraging towns & cities each to support a particular team. Whangarei to support Costa Rica, Hastings to get behind Zambia, etc. I thought that approach worked well in the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

  Clearly any game involving New Zealamd was going to be a near-sell-out – especially since they did the tournament a BIG favour by winning their first game.
  
  But, just as clearly, there are a whole swag of ‘Meh’ games in Pool Play that they must’ve known would feature swathes of empty seats.
  
  Especially with the tournament being played in winter.
  
  So do FIFA ‘help’ the public by enabling walk-up, buy-tickets-on-the-day crowd(s)? Nope. You must spent a-g-e-s on their COMPLICATED, intrusive on-line booking system … or stay at home.

  Whether they are right or wrong the polls show almost 50% of voters want a Socialist/Communist Government to command and control them. For that reason IMHO ACT should highlight the tragic Auckland shootings as further evidence that Labour are soft on crime. It may or may not win ACT more votes but it may cause swing fringe Labour voters to shift their support to the Nats benefiting both the Nats and ACT.
  Politics is a dirty game it aint tiddly winks. You gotta fight fire with fire. In ACTs shoes Labour would have no qualms doing the same.

    I disagree with the 50%. Many many people that would traditionally vote Labour, don’t want to vote Labour but they see National as bad as Labour, because Luxon is so wet. He may come across well at a National election meeting but that’s a small amount of people in a local meeting.
    
    Faced with no real opposition to Labour save Act, many will vote for the devil they know (chippie) than the devil they don’t (luxon).

  Personally, I don’t think it’s got anything to be with NZ males not liking being told what to do. Go to any shopping centre on a weekend and it’s choc full of blokes that would rather be anywhere else but have most certainly been overridden by the boss – aka the wife!
  
  I think it’s simply the fact that women’s football isn’t a great product. It’s pretty poor quality and the gulf in class between the top 3 or 4 teams and the rest is a chasm. Even the best women’s teams are not up to the same skill level as the average mens professional team – this is not sexist it’s just fact. The quality is improving, but it’s still pretty poor in places.
  
  Thursday nights opening games were a stark example of that – one great goal, lots of nervy ‘boot it, head it’ headless chicken defence / attacking in the box and no midfielder in any of the four teams with any vision to pick out passes to the wingers / fullback’s who were in acres of space on the wing – lost count of the amount of times Riley (good player in my opinion) from the Ferns was completely unmarked on the right wing or making good runs forward and they’d ignore her and the ball would be ‘hoofed’ into the box with the usual headless chicken defence / attack ping-pong outcome. It’s like watching lower league English football – lot’s of passion, not a lot of ability.
  
  So faced with a convoluted ticketing system, some poor quality teams, during high inflation, in winter, most games available on TV, no real prospect of the Ferns winning (getting out of their group would be a major achievement), and with the NZ public not generally being that keen on football / soccer anyway, is it any surprise the ticket numbers have been slow?

  Well I took my daughters along to the Spain/Costa Rica game in Wellington last night and it was fantastic. Great atmosphere and supreme skill showed by the players. Would highly recommend getting behind it and let this tournament show our young women what it is like to chase their dreams. No need to be narrow minded mate.

  Despite the best possible start to the WWC, with a deserved NZ win and good luck to them, discerning sports viewers can spot when they’re being sold a pup.
  
  All the breathless BS such as “world’s best players” (ha!), “biggest sporting event NZ has ever held” (hmm, I seriously doubt it will come close to the RWC 2011 or any of the last several Lions visits), and “record crowds” (tens of thousands of free tickets still not enough to get people to watch mediocrity) cannot disguise the incontrovertible truth that if Pep Guardiola trained the best players from this WWC for a month, they would still be soundly trounced by the average high school first XI.

  Anyone who was at the opening game on Thursday night will long remember it as an amazing night for NZ sport. It was in incredible effort from the Ferns – absolutely deserved the win and played with incredible heart under a fair amount of pressure/expectation.
  
  The event hasn’t attracted as many foreign visitors to NZ, but that’s not entirely the government’s fault to be fair to them.
  
  The issue is that government has only been half-hearted about tourism’s recovery. They pretty much shat all over tourism during covid and don’t see it as a critical part of NZ’s economy.

  Actually CJames, the crowds have been surprisingly good. I have been half-watching USA beat Vietnam, and the crowd, whilst not a full house, is definitely well north of 30,000. 23,000 turned out last night on a typically foul Wellington winter night to watch Spain beat Costa Rica.
  
  I think the organisers will be pretty happy with ticket sales so far. The New Zealand vs Philippines match at Wellington on Tuesday is sold out, as is the USA vs The Netherlands match next Thursday. All in all, it’s a pretty good effort, and is a lesson to Super Rugby that if you make ticket prices reasonable, people will come and watch.

    FYI FIFA have rules about everything. The music played must be instrumental only and no longer than a certain number of seconds, so no time to play it twice. At the game it was a curious mix of people singing English and Māori verse at same time.
    
    With the flags it was surprising for FIFA to allow additional flags being flown as they normally avoid anything like that as it opens too many cans of worms.

  Or just look at the catastrophe affecting so much of the land in the Northern Hemisphere and El Nino hasn’t really got cracking yet.

    Well, that’s the most common logical fallacy of all, the argument from authority. Empirical propositions are true or false based solely on their alignment or non-alignment with reality, not on who endorses them.
    
    The history of science is really the history of people making statements purported to be incontrovertible facts (on the basis that “the science says so”) only to be later discredited by other “the science says so” claims that contradict the earlier claim.
    
    A scientific claim only has value to the extent that it is resistant to refutation, and most scientific claims are not very resistant at all. It’s like panning for gold – there are always some tiny specks of the good stuff in there somewhere, but there’s always far more shit to sift through first.

My view is that nothing will ever change for the good until things get so bad that they have to change for the good. Currently, too many people have too much to gain from not changing anything. Necessity is the mother of invention, after all, so let’s make change necessary.

Put in negative terms, “anti-racism” means White people deferring to brown people. Do you get it yet? If you are White but stick up for your interests as a White person, you are “racist.” It follows that “Maori are racist too” is to make a category mistake.
    
    The word doesn’t have universal application –it only applies to White people. Then you get these idiotic Whites defending themselves against the accusation – it’s an unwinnable defence, because “being White” is identical to “being racist.” “That’s ridiculous, I’m not racist!” you may object – thereby perfectly proving my point that you simply don’t get it.
    
    What’s the solution? Reject the concept and the use of the word. As long as White people buy into it (which is an essential part of the equation), then they’ll always be “racist” and therefore they will get walked all over.

Then again, atheists in those days and now can’t consistently critique cannibalism, or make any other moral judgment that isn’t completely subjective, because there is no morality where there is only matter.       I think it’s an interesting observation that facts about white history are seen as acceptable, but facts about Maori history are seen as racist. Ironically, it reveals that white people are judged and held to a much higher standard. That white people are “born into sin” for the crimes of their ancestors.   Matt Long you neglected to mention that the payment for maori language proficiency was actually an annual pay rise, and no doubt subject to annual increases, so $3,500 today, an additional 5% next year and so on. Implied in the article is that the annual payment is being paid by a number of other government departments. The state service commission doesn’t appear to know how many and which agencies and I’m sure the PSA won’t tell you. You may mentally wander back to the olden golden days when you acquired skills relating to your actual job that resulted in advancement and additional salary. Now the ability to sing in tune so that your waiata and karakia do not mark you as a racist is as important as your ability to actually do your job.

  Haven’t been impressed by the media on this – I wondered whether there would be a bit of a ‘soft focus’ reporting as soon as his apparent race came into play. Certainly seems to be the case so far.
  
  Would be nice if the media started asking some hard questions for once.
  
  Not like they should struggle to put some real questions to the government. Like asking the government how he was able to get a firearm if the arm’s buy back was supposed to make us safer? Or why the judge put him on home D when he clearly was extremely violent and showed no remorse? Are there any plans to make judges accountable? Does the government now concede that reduction in prison numbers can only come through a reduction in crime, not pathetic soft sentencing?
  
  So many hard questions could be asked.But nope. Generational anger it is then.

  Some of these “families” might just have to buck up their ideas and start taking some responsibility for the way they treat their kids.
  I don’t think I have ever heard anyone in authority directly call out family violence and neglect – and the ongoing negative impact it has on children.
  It is always someone else’s fault.

  They’ve turned the main road (Cameron road) through the city into a construction zone for nearly three years now. Its the worst example of incompetence I’ve seen in any city. Auckland CBD works were bad, this is worse.
  
  They’re not even doing much work, laying some new pipes, and painting the roads so that pedestrians have right of way on the roads now.

      Couldn’t agree more Paulus & surfing. Ever since Tolley was appointed commissioner, she has been subservient to Mahuta & embraced & initiated most of the shambles that Tauranga CBD & environs are now – including 3 waters. My son-in-law & daughter own the pharmacy in the CBD, and turnover is down probably 70% on what it was 5 years ago – fortunately with good management it is still quite viable.
      Covid never helped & likewise the insistence on reinforcing/rebuilding earthquake risky buildings – but the whole thing could have been expedited much more efficiently with proper management & supervision.
      And don’t get me started on the Health & Safety requirements – as a retired builder, 50% of the rules are totally unecessary & very expensive.

    This is a strong indication of how small groups of hard left activists an their financiers are able to change society and circumvent democracy, while the vast majority of people strongly disagree.

And yes, these people – Esther Rantzen, Iain Dale, Tony Blair, Edwina Currie, Boris Johnson, Nick Ferrari, Jonathan Van-Tam, Jeremy Vine and Andrew Neil – really did say and write these things.

Exactly the same thing happened in New Zealand. ‘Anti vaxxers’ were abused, vilified and threatened.       Swifty, you’re being very unfair on the government. As we all know, politicians never apologise (unless forced to do so by the Privileges Committee). Just imagine the Opposition’s response if Phil Twyford had apologised for the singular failure that was KiwiBuild. They would have ridiculed him, then mocked him (and the government) for months on end, if not right up to the upcoming election. And it won’t change following the change of government in October (yes, you read that correctly) – that’s a certainty.
      
      The problem is not a lack of contrition (by successive governments, going way, way, back). The problem is the adversarial, Westminster system our politicians labour under. It encourages “corrosive” politics, and should be done away with, just like our adversarial system of justice should be done away with (in favour of the French inquisitorial system).
      
      Our system of politics should be replaced by a better version of the “collegial” Swiss system. Just for my own interest, I have been working on such a better version for several years. Our system will never change, of course, certainly not in my lifetime, but it’s fun trying to develop (what I consider to be) a better system, anyway.
      
      Following the change of government, it’s going to be very interesting to see how Kiwibloggers respond to the failures of the next government. Sadly, I expect to see Kiwibloggers twist themselves inside out – e.g., “it will take many years to correct the previous government’s many, egregious, failures” – as they attempt to explain and justify the NACT government’s failures (of which there will be many). Even more sadly, Kiwibloggers will still be doing that, unrelentingly, during that government’s fourth term.
      
      Ah, well. Such is life.

        I’m far, far more concerned these days with what’s right, not who’s right.
        
        I look around New Zealand today and see the terrible effects of bad central government policy and actions everywhere – and with both major parties to blame. Perhaps not to blame equally, but both must carry that can.
        
        As long as I’m upright I’ll continue to advance the ideas I think are right and will do my best, in my very small way, to use evidence and facts in an attempt to convince others.

Many big American companies are axing diversity posts, reports the Wall Street Journal:

“Companies including Netflix, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery have recently said that high-profile diversity, equity and inclusion executives will be leaving their jobs. Thousands of diversity-focused workers have been laid off since last year, and some companies are scaling back racial justice commitments.”

The newspaper says some “chief diversity officers’ say their work is facing additional scrutiny since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action in college admissions and companies brace for potential legal challenges. DEI [Diversity, equity, and inclusion]work has also become a political target.

There have been 115 shootings in the Eastern District in the last 3 years…. thirty people wounded and 2 women killed.

and surprise, surprise… It’s most unlikely to be a conspiracy theorist firing the weapon.

Nearly all have been gang-related and have involved illegal firearms.

    We started with champagne cocktails.
    Then made our way thru a selection of everything from Oyster Shots, Cervche, Crispy Calamari, Duck with roast plums, Tiger Prawns, Cray 2 ways, Fries, and followed by Petit Fours. All washed down with bottomless glasses of Bolly for six. Then an Uber home.

Anyone else here fairly security/privacy conscious and try to use Signal messenger as much as possible for comms?

I find it incredibly hard to get people interested in using this stuff. There are a handful, which is good, but many proudly and smugly cling to facebook and whatsapp (not to mention all the other highly insecure and/or non-private methods). Go figure!

  I was introduced to Signal as part of a group that prefers its privacy abilities to those of the commonly used systems. However, it’s not the easiest system to use, and lacks some of the facility of others, so I stick with ordinary texts when privacy is not an issue.

    Yeah I can live with the very small number of minor annoyances with Signal. For me it’s more than good enough. Especially since it is by many accounts the gold standard of private and secure messaging. But unfortunately most people are sucked in by the shiny “convenience” baits that draw them into the surveillance capitalism web of nefarious privacy abuse. One little inconvenience and these people delete Signal. The trouble is, them using these big tech spyware platforms (eg big tech email) to communicate with me compromises my privacy and security as well!
    
    Ordinary text messages and phone calls are apparently mined, cataloged, profiled and sold to data brokers as well (by the mobile/telephone service provider).

Here is an example of the fuckery from the ‘article’:

This is just a clumsy way to present bad stats that make the government look bad. This why most people do not like or trust journalists.

What I have found interesting over recent time with regard to predicting the election outcome is the slump in support over the years for the two major parties. This trend ofcourse is from polls so how accurate are those only time will tell. Presumably with both majors in the low 30% this is the hard core supporters of each party which is unlikely to change unless a disaster occurs for one of them. So there is a large part of the electorate who don’t know, supporting minor parties, or are turned off by all of them.(that includes me) Fascinating stuff could end up with any scenario in October. Would suggest have your bags packed !

I’ve been a supporter for some time of Hobson’s Pledge and their fight to maintain equality for all races. So it’s with more than a little surprise I have just received an email from spokesperson Casey Costello announcing that he’s ceasing that position in order to stand for parliament under the NZ First banner. I really don’t know what to make of this. While I agree with much that Winston says, I have severe reservations about his inclination to recant when the rubber hits the road. I seriously wonder how much Casey can hold Winston to his campaign stances (I suspect very little). I would have thought Casey had achieved more with Hobson’s Pledge than he will as part of NZF. Oh dear…. what to think?

Apparently it’s a record breaking year for temperature records. Highest average temps for the last 100,000yrs they say. It’s a strange statistic to use in an attempt to support global warming theory. In my eyes that tells me that the last 99,999yrs have been colder than 100,000yrs ago? That the climate over the period has been TRENDING COOLER, and that this year is an outlier and unusually warm.

Do we have any theories on why that could be? My theory is that we have unusually high atmospheric moisture levels. I’ve never seen such a wet year in my life. We all know that an overcast night is much much warmer than a clear cloudless night.

Love him or hate him, he is one of the few that can read the feelings of the nation. But it would go the same way as removing the Māori seats, will never happen.

Scrapping the Waitangi Tribunal and building a prison just for gang members are among some of the policy proposals New Zealand First members have voted in favour of.

It comes as the spokeswoman of lobby group Hobson’s Pledge, Casey Costello, confirms she will run as NZ First’s candidate in the Port Waikato electorate.

An estimated 200 people packed into the Holiday Inn Auckland Airport function room today for NZ First’s annual convention, ahead of the party’s campaign launch at Mt Smart Stadium tomorrow.
