It’s the 80th anniversary of the armistice which ended fighting in the Korean War, although no formal peace treaty has ever been signed.
4,700 New Zealanders served as part of the New Zealand contingent – Kayforce – under UN command, while 1,300 served on RNZN frigates and a small number of RNZAF pilots served with allied squadrons. 34 New Zealanders died in the war.

      Some Aboriginal groups say 300,000 of the 800,000 who claim to be Aboriginal are fakes. Apply that percentage to NZ and its about the same numbers 300K.
      I say if Maoris want special benefits of any kind they must prove their ancestry through a DNA test.
      I could claim my great great grandmother was Ngati Whatever and whose to call me out. No written BDMs back then. Otherwise its a giant rort on the rest of the taxpayers.

      Might be in an “Official history” in my 75 odd years of understanding such matters it was always expressed as KForce, just as the NZ army contribution to post war Japan occupation was JForce.
      I well remember the Night at the Waiau Memorial Hall when a night of dancing and acknowledgement was held to farewell Moss Jury and Clarry Dench, two young men from the village who had signed up to go to the Korean War.
      Of course that will only be temporary as the rewrite of NZ history will accord native made up words for all this in the new “Official History”, not much moment aye.

    I don’t have it to hand, but posted a link a week or so ago showing that EVs that have been damaged in an accident require ten times as much storage space as an ICE vehicle due to the risk of them exploding and causing further damage to vehicles around them.
    As the inconvenient truth emerges around the whole ‘green’ movement it is apparent that even if there was some man made involvement in ‘climate change’, electric vehicles, windmills and solar panels are NOT the answer. They are more toxic than what they replace.
    
    To qualify, I’m no oil company executive, I live FULLY off grid. No connection to reticulated water or power of any kind.

      Adding charging on the ferry will simply increase drain on the engines power, which ought to be applied to more important things, like propulsion

  Insurance companies are sending premiums through the roof on all things EV’s. Shipping companies will at some stage have to stop shipping them. How many EV’s sit in garages overnight charging….?

    I have an electric golf scooter, out of warranty, the battery is sparking when you try and connect it. I think it will be going to landfill very soon, not sure about disposal of the battery, it will be neither ‘clean and green’ nor cheap no doubt.
    So much for ‘doing the right thing’. Next one will be traditional ICE.

        @softail 1450 – cheers for the response. The battery is a fully sealed unit, can’t even open it. The compartment with the controller in it may have got moisture in there. With all the stories about lithium batteries blowing up I’m concerned about fiddling too much and sadly, there isn’t an auto electrician within 100km from where I live.
        I’ve been told to disconnect everything from the controller then try plugging it in. I’m sure it’s something minor. Thanks for the advice though!

    It does beg the question of how NZ is actually going to receive EVs if ships stop carrying them here. Perhaps one ship per year, fully loaded with EVs & with a second ship tailing it in case the crew need to abandon the first ship? Chippy would approve.
    
    And – how long before insurance companies will frown upon EVs being parked in a garage that’s integral to the structure of your house?

      Neighbours of a few years back (maybe 5?) had a fire start in their garage which ruined the entire house. It was attributed by the brigade to be an appliance battery recharging. The nice brigade officers advised all the neighbours not to do this. So never do we charge an electric drill or hedge trimmer etc unless we are able to be right there. Can’t imagine what the future will hold for lots of EVs.. Hope nextdoor doesn’t get one!

      The issue with EV fires is 2 fold, even though the heat rease rate is similar to ICE car fires. They are self sustaining, so squirting water on it doesn’t help, or even foam. The battery packs are buried in the car andhard to get water onto thm to cool them.
      The battery packs also form a jet fire, as the cell packs go off. this forms a flamethrower out the side of the car, dagerous to fire fighters and surroudning cars or combustible materials

    While EV fires are harder to put out, petrol cars are 100 times more likely to start burning than EV’s. With some 3000 petrol cars on board this vessel and only 25 EV’s there is a good chance that the fire was not caused by an EV.

        The speed of the spread of the fire plus its intensity suggests that even if the fire was not sparked by an EV failure, one or more EVs were alight pretty quickly after the initial ignition.

      Haha, nice try, but I read the report. Cars with electric motors and batteries catch fire at a rate almost 2.5 times higher than ICEs. I guess we’ll find out eventually, but I’ll wager a pound to a pinch of goat poo it was an EV or hybrid that started it.

Not surprisingly officials are tight lipped on financial liability in the wake of Kiri’s collision. I am trying to figure what the situation would be. At the time of collision Kiri was driving a company car in the course of her normal employment as a Minister, it is apparent she was returning to her Wellington accommodation from her electorate. The owner of the ute she crashed into (and the owner’s insurer if any) would have a claim against Kiri personally and most probably the employer (ie the Crown) ‘jointly and severally’ and could sue whoever has the deeper pocket (ie the Crown). The white EV she was driving would be insured by Ministerial services as a ‘company cars’ (in practice there would probably be one policy covering all the CR and self drive cars).
Most probably the ute’s insurer would make a claim off Ministerial Services insurer who at this point would have to meet the cost of repairs (or replacement if totalled) of both cars. Assuming Kiri was authorised to drive the EV (which she would have been) and was sober (no alcohol within the last 24 hours or so) that would be the end of the matter insurance-wise. However media reported she was issued with a drink-drive infringement.
Now an employee drinking and driving a company car would generally not invalidate the insurance as long as the company or management was unaware of the drinking (this being a different situation from a privately owned car). BUT the terms of such insurance allows the insurance company to recover the losses it has paid out for from the driver. So the default consequence is Kiri would have to meet the cost of repairing (or replacing) both vehicles (perhaps $50,000 upwards). The PM and Ministers can just sit back and let Kiri be sued and if she cannot afford it she would face bankruptcy. However I doubt that the Ministers would allow her to be thrown to the wolves. Ministerial Services could try and persuade its insurer to ‘back off’. Failing that Ministerial Services could just reimburse its insurer on Kiri’s behalf with a vague promise to recover from Kiri. At that point the papers would just be put in the ‘pending’ tray and left there. So effectively the cost of the episode falls on the long suffering taxpayer – but hey! nothing which a bit of wealth tax won’t fix.

    I consider there were enough jigsaw pieces to reasonably conclude she was returning from her electorate ready for next day’s Cabinet meeting. I assumed that to avoid having to discuss any possible issue arising from unauthorised use of company vehicles
    As far as insurance goes, the Government did not insure its vehicles prior to Rogernomics since it could meet claims out of ordinary budgets and cash flows. The Government did make State Insurance (which was then Government owned) responsible for dealing with claims related to Government vehicles since it had the resources and expertise to handle such claims. However one of the features of Rogernomics was to require Government agencies to insure its vehicles for accounting, transparency and other reasons. An agency with a clean and tidy vehicle operation and which could provide accurate crash and damage statistics could negotiate a fantastically low premium for its fleet. For example MOT paid a very low premium for its traffic officer cars (before merger with the Police) whereas the Police had to pay a far higher premium.

      I would think that she had been in Wellington for at least 3 hours before her prang.
      There is a direct flight Gisborne – Wellington that arrives at 5.115 pm on Sunday.
      Willie Jackson has said that he had talked to her on the phone at about 6.00 pm. She wanted to have a meal with him. He couldn’t because he wasn’t in Wellington, implying that she was.

      Your jigsaw pieces don’t quite fit. If she was returning from her electorate, the last flight from Gisborne touched down at around 5:15 pm on Sunday. She was pissed and crashed into the ute around 9pm, so unless she spent a good 3 and a half hours on the piss in the Koru Lounge, she had been somewhere else before she got behind the wheel.

    It may well be extremely important if true. I’ll admit I haven’t read definitively where she was going from and to but if she was travelling from Gisborne to Wellington then the alcohol level takes on a whole new spectre.
    I’m still trying to get my head around why NZ has this bizarre infringement level for drink driving, but setting that aside, if she has been driving for several hours before that crash then 1) her reading would have been well over that criminal charge threshold and here in the UK I think they can do a ‘countback’ for such circumstances and 2) she’s driven impaired for a huge distance and put many road users at risk.
    Of course that may not be the journey and she may have just been popping around the corner for some smokes but definitely becomes far more serious if so.
    As many keep saying, more and more questions raise their heads…

      She won’t get insurance but as mentioned earlier Ministerial Services will probably just foot the bill with a Ministerial (Robbo?) sign-off if need be to satisfy Audit. It would be interesting to know if Ministerial Services leases self-drive cars for Ministers. Interestingly prior to 1999, each Minister could have two self-drive cars (one in the electorate and one in Wellington) but Helen Clark cut it back to one and told her new Ministers they had to select from the existing fleet rather than expect new cars.
      Yes, the taxpayer does have a right to know, but in practice will not know.

I first looked at it late May 2021. It stated there was no trial work done on pregnant women. No trial work done for those on ANY other meds. No trial work done on children.
        The government was concurrently running adverts on national television saying it was safe and effective for pregnant women.
        I was flabbergasted.
        Yet the information was under everyones noses. Including of course every doctor and nurse. Every virologist. Every politician. They even had the gall to say it was there. Look everybody its published on Medsafes website.
        That Pfizer paperwork was easy to understand. It did not take a rocket scientist to see what was there.
        My faith in humanity has been sorely tested.
        Then they had to start publishing the stuff Pfizer withheld….

    From the NZ Police FAQ page:
    
    “After a non-injury crash you should swap names and addresses with other motorists involved. If the crash involved another person’s property, such as a fence, you should report it to the owner of the property within 48 hours of the crash. If the owner cannot be located report to police within 60 hours of the crash.
    
    All crashes resulting in injury (such as broken bones or a night in hospital) should be reported by calling 105 or visiting your local police as soon as is practicable and no later than 24 hours from the time of the crash.”
    
    So no penalty for leaving the scene, although she did leave the car in a dangerous position, and she had 48 hours to notify the owner of the ute.

        Neither crashing nor leaving the scene of an accident if nobody is injured is a crime. You might think or wish it were not the case, but it is.
        
        It may be that the aftermath of the crash sees a driver charged with careless or reckless driving, driving with excess blood alcohol and anything else that transpires (such as doing a runner), but having an accident and leaving are not ipso facto crimes.

  Allan was found to have been over the permitted alcohol limit so there will be no insurance – end of story.
  Both cars will likely be written off. Electric cars have very low reparability due to the expensive battery being part of the car’s chassis and structure. There are always written off Teslas for sale on TradeMe with little apparent damage. The ute’s right rear wheel was shunted to the front of the wheel well therefore the axle, driveshaft, transfer case, panels, wheel, tyre and chassis at a minimum are also damaged. That’s a write off.
  Two relatively new vehicles so there’s over $100k replacement.

    There would be no insurance for Kiri’s personal liability. But the owner of the ute she hit and Ministerial Services with respect to the EV would be covered by insurance (Ministerial Services did not drink). It is up to Ministerial Services insurers to claim back the payouts from Kiri unless someone (eg the responsible Minister) persuades the insurer not to or Ministerial Services quietly reimburses its insurer to forestall debt recovery.

  Perhaps Microsoft, Gmail, etc could be persuaded to modify their software to ask ‘are you sure you do not want bcc’ when a cc list has more than 5 or 10 names. Reminds me of the time I sent a confidential fax. I punched in the number of the recipients fax machine but because of a blooper on my part I ended up sending the fax to several ‘shortcut’ recipients. Fortunately I was able to contact the various receptionists and secretaries involved and get the copies destroyed.

  All electorate votes do is stick parties with MP’s that they don’t really want. If a party wants an MP then they give them a high list placing and whether they win the electorate vote is irrelevant. So I vote for the idiot that Labour puts up because it has no effect on the proportionality of parliament but it means Labour gets stuck with that MP when they’d rather have someone off their list.

ACT MP Karen Chhour had her Private Members Bill turned down by Labour and the Greens last night despite its need and despite most MP’s of all sides commending her dedicated work and sincerity in tackling a problem that is simply a case of arrogant ethnic demands above the best interests of a foster child. Oranga Tamariki require any foster child that has any Māori blood no matter how trivial to be placed in the care of Māori parents even against their will and even if they are already in a loving caring home. It is blinded, high handed, hubris. In a recent case a child with more Australian Aboriginal genes than Māori genes was taken and put with Māori parents – well parents with some Māori blood.

Who cares about the needs of vulnerable young kids when there are big adult cultural games to play?

On the European side of my family I can trace my lineage back with considerable certainty nearly a thousand years, names, professions, and often addresses of the houses they lived in. Another day, and more information about the unfortunate Kiri Allan and her accident gets into the media. This time on am Show (TV3). The distance the police found Allan from the scene of the accident. The distance was such it is hard to defend that she hadn’t left the scene of the accident.

Rather than running interference, why don’t Coster and the government minders just tell the truth? An alien concept I know, but a hell of a less waste of money on the public purse, than the continuous dripping of information by a 101 leaks!

Why isn’t the parent up on charges for letting their kids play in the water as a 3m swell is not insignificant, the water level on shore can go from ankles to overhead in a few seconds.

  As an ex serviceman, I do find this troubling, however, as long as the incoming government carries on with the replacement of our C130’s, that would be a good start.
  
  That being said, given the parlous state of our Health system, Transport infrastructure, Education Department, Emergency Services, Corrections etc, priorities would be the correct approach.

    I’m always curious about people in NZ talking about defence spending. Surely anything spent has to be effective? I remember the outcry about the Skyhawks, but reality is, they would have lasted less than a couple of hours if the country was invaded by any other first world country.
    
    What can NZ spend the money on that would protect us in the event of an actual invasion by somewhere like China? Genuine question. No point in spending money on stuff that will become target practice for those with bigger militaries and deeper pockets.

        The Swiss arm their populace and require the undertaking of national service because the majority of their citizens live less than 50Kms from a land border with another country. This proximity to a potential invader’s ingress point also justifies the pre-emptive mining of border crossings, bridges and tunnels, building of subtle fortifications along these transport routes, and, finally, the storage of vast amounts of ammo around the country, including within citizens’ homes. From a deterrence point of view, this approach to defence has been very successful over the centuries.

        It’s because your view of defending NZ is a common, but naive, one. We don’t have armed forces waiting on the beaches to repel an invasion for two reasons:
        1. We could never afford to independently build and maintain the sort of armed forces that could repel an invasion.
        2. Before getting to NZ, any possible invading force would have had to defeat or neutralize many other countries.
        For these reasons, NZ has always sought to maintain military capabilities that can provide a mix of direct protection of NZ interests and also contribute to collective efforts of allies.

        Clan – NZ will never be able to defend itself from any major country’s attack. We are just too small and do not have the GDP. Our best bet was the ANZUS agreement and having one squadron in Australia. That is the past so now our next best bet is to be Switzerland and become neutral. Have a small navy for coast guard, air force for air transport and search and rescue, and a small army to help with disasters.

  The British are no longer considered a tier 1 fighting force. The Germans gave solders broom sticks because they did not have enough rifles.
  
  The frigates have had some upgrades but are still considered the best well informed targets in the world.
  
  The last transport ship bought has no offensive or defensive capabilities. Just because it is transport does not mean it is not a target.

Sounds like they used the dogs to back track from where she was found to the vehicle. So probably trying to link her with the vehicle and the accident or find out where she had been or may have discarded. This is developing into a very sloppy mess and not helped by the gaslighting and deflecting onto sexism, racism, homophobia, mental health issues by her supporters in an attempt to shut it down.

I hope that someone is OIA’ing what the original charge sheets and Infringements Notices recorded in terms of charges, the suspicion now as circumstances become clearer is this wasn’t a simple minor motor accident. It’s much messier than that and the initial charges we heard about were probably reflective of that messiness, but are now different than initially reported. There has to be clarity over what communications there were between the Police and the offices of Allen and Hipkins.

    Yes that certainly occurs to try and locate a runner or a driver who may be dazed or injured but in this case it’s being reported as the other way around. They found her first and back tracked to the vehicle.
    
    Coming from the city they were likely to find her prior to getting to the scene.

Another piece of news that does not bode well for NZ.

Students given free UE credits to go to university (because of Covid), are dropping out of university (failing to complete their studies) – 69%, versus students who those students who completed school and sat exams to get the credits to go to University – 85%.

There you have it, Chippie and Tinetti, two of the people who have done so much to wreck NZ’s future, but ruining the potential of NZ’s future generations. Brilliant, not!!

    Greybeard the sentence & numbers were mangled. Should have been:
    85% of students who passed NCEA3 and UE, complete university versus only 69% of those university students who were given UE credits (as opposed to sitting & passing public exams) complete university.
    
    Bottom line reduce the academic rigour at school, does not bode well for the calibre of students undertaking university in the future.

In Queensland it is now being reported, that you will only be able to use your electric car determines when you can use your electric car!

In Queensland, because the state has limited power supply for retail consumers, the state is wanting to limit consumers ability to charge their electric vehicle to off peak hours, and have the ability to cut the ability of domestic customers to charge their vehicles. Meaning, the state gets the discretion as to when someone charges their car.

What are the chances of that happening in NZ, where only 80% to 85% of NZ’s power is generated from reliable renewable resources, and we have had periods in recent years where there have been blackouts?

Reports that a cheap (copper lead phosphorus oxygen compound) above room temperature superconductor (>127°C) has been discovered, though with low current and magnetic field tolerance that limits usefulness. Expect replication in next week or two if it’s real. Will make for some fun levitation toys and applications, and some improvements in electronics and computers.

    I’ve played with actual superconductors and that video is pretty unconvincing. At this stage I would have serious doubts. If it does turn out to be true they will have identified an entirely new mechanism for superconductivity that can likely be optimised to produce world changing products.

      Diamagnetism (strongest in graphite) can produce repulsive behaviour, but much weaker than what is shown in this video. Permanent magnets are unstable and will just flip over in such settings.
      
      The video with sample tilting up depending on vector of local surface magnetic field of magnet (which will diverge more and more from perpendicular depending upon proximity to edge) is the really telling behaviour – strongly indicative of flux pinning in a superconductor. Really little doubt this is real unless there is some trickery in play.

    Higher-temperature semiconductors are a big deal, ranging from MRI machines to maglev trains, to a new war weapon, the rail gun, which fires projectiles by electro-magnetic force.
    
    NZ was an early researcher in superconductors, and last month Wellington researchers announced they had developed and installed the magnet used in the first MRI portable scanner.
    
    This is on trial in a joint project with the University of Minnesota in the United States.

She questioned the lawyers about the deal, pointing out that it looked like it would give him full immunity for all crimes he committed during the period. The Defense lawyers agreed that was the case, the Prosecution covered their arses by saying that wasn’t the intent.

The Judge denied the plea deal. It got amended to only cover the specific charges and Hunter decided it wasn’t good enough and plead “not guilty” for now. He wants immunity for all his crimes.

It seems like the Judge was possibly angry as a lawyer from Hunter’s lawyers old firm (that he resigned from 2 months ago) rang up the court the night before, pretending to be from the prosecution and got key evidence removed from the docket. The Court removed it but contacted the Prosecution to confirm what they’d done. The Prosecution had to resubmit it.

Apparently Hunter and the people around him think they’re untouchable.

  Heart tissue is weird, it doesn’t repair it scars, damage is cumulative through your life, it doesn’t get better.
  
  A percentage of people who had heart damage from jabs would have been made sufficiently worse (with existing issues from earlier life) to then have heart attacks, perhaps explaining the extra 2000 deaths in NZ in 2021 after vaccination compared to 2020 (no significant covid or flu in 2020 or 2021).
  
  It was notably more dangerous for people who put their hearts under high stress with exercise after vaccination – ie young (predominantly male) athletes. Inactive slobs had an advantage.

Could wine cause a diplomatic incident? An Argentinian wine has been branded as ‘Cabo de Hornos [Cape Horn] Argentina’ (there’s also an excellent, premium Chilean ‘Cabo de Hornos’ cabernet sauvignon). The issue is that Cape Horn is Chilean territory. The Chilean Maritime League, headed by the former Navy C-in-C, has written an open letter to Chile’s Foreign Minister asking him to denounce Argentina’s ‘appropriation and provocation’ and to remind the international community of Chile’s ‘imperishable and immutable’ sovereignty over Cape Horn and the Magellanes (there are simmering border disputes and other tensions between the two countries, like sea and air traffic to the Falklands.)

Incidentally, Chile’s Foreign Minister resigned in 2022 after his private, undiplomatic remarks about Argentina were leaked; and there have been calls to expel Argentina’s Ambassador to Chile because of his inflammatory comments about Chile’s domestic affairs.

I remember when

Have been looking carefully at the Greek Islands fires and have noticed a couple of points.
The first, is that despite the extreme heat and droughts of the last couple of years the trees appear very green and healthy.
Secondly, is the amount of dry grasses and other tinder that surrounds them.
Is CO2 causing more wild fires because of the extra growth it causes?

  fuel load is fast becoming a critical risk measure in wild fire assessment. Australia especially has discovered that the Green Party ‘don’t clear scrub or conduct undergrowth clearance activities’ has endangered many and killed more than a few. The vast bulk of the urban population has yet to support doing something about it tho. Idiots are everywhere and critical thinking skills are becoming a rare commodity it would appear.

Climate Change Minister James Shaw admits the Government’s change of tack on the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) will result in people paying more for electricity and petrol.

The Government on Tuesday confirmed it had backtracked on its decision to keep a tight lid on carbon prices – taking on board earlier advice from the independent Climate Change Commission. It comes after the Government earlier this month lost a court case to climate-concerned lawyers.

  How does reducing New Zealand emissions have any effect on the incidence of severe weather?
  
  On the ETS, assuming a change of government, this will be a real test for Luxon. AFAIK an incoming National Government would do exactly what Shaw has just announced – allow the ETS to work.
  
  As I have commented before, these prospective increases in energy costs are just the very beginning. Just with the 2030 targets, we face several years of relentless increases in energy costs. That is not a side effect – that is the plan. National is all for it.

  He is quoted as saying it is all fine. The ETS rises will increase inflation. benefits are linked to the CPI. So benefits will increase. All funded by the magic money tree.

Listening to the Hosk this morn so thort I’d take his advice and tune into Parliament Question-Time. Mike reckons he’s addicted to it 😀

Anyway, watching it the two things that really stood out to me were….

Given the obvious lack of talent remaining on Labor’s front bench, why hasn’t Chippie promoted Marja Lubeck to a Ministerial role….and secondly, does the new Transport Minister David Parker not own a f**ing comb?

I have been watching an interview with Naledi Pandor. She is South Africa’s Foreign Minister.
What a beautifully spoken woman. I thought she was a pleasure to listen to.
But I am not up to date on South African affairs and hope that some of my Japie mates on this blog may comment.
I place Naledi Pandor so far above our own Foreign Minister, who usually makes me cringe.
