“Vacant house tax: A new 33% tax on the market value of properties that remain untenanted for six months or more”

We own a house that we bought 40 years ago for $80,000. It is now worth $1.3 million. We retire next year and will take a 7 month long holiday overseas. Our house will not be let during that time. It will be looked after by whanau. Do wehave to pay $400,000 tax, Rawiri?
With our other investments, my wife and I are worth about $6 million. That’s $3 million each. According to your policy, we have to pay wealth tax on our combined wealth so we pay 4% on the last million. My neighbour, who is a confirmed bachelor, is worth $4.95 million, so only pays 2%. Explain the logic please

This morning I listened to Jamie McKay’s program “The Best of the Country”, a replay of his daily broadcasts from the week just gone.

One of his interviews was with Damien O’Connor, and it was a beauty !
He absolutely shreds O’Connor, who comes across as totally delusional and in denial of all that has happened to Labour.

Followed immediately by a great interview with Jane Smith, a North Otago farmer and winner of serious agricultural awards. She would make such a great Minister of Agriculture !

    Was going to add: Always worth a listen to the “real” New Zealand and the farming community providing solutions (that if only Labour/greens would listen to)!
    
    Finally to show their balance, they regularly interview National (Luxon and other MP’s), ACT (Seymour), Labour (Damien O’Connor and the PM) and Greens (Shaw) … sometimes putting the rest of the MSM to shame as one learns a lot more from these interviews on the pros and cons of whatever the issues and proposed solutions of the day are!

  The same problem has occurred in the US. The NYFD has been has had to respond to a number of fires, including call outs to repair shops where the fires have been caused by self combusting batteries.

  Just imagine for a moment, that the Govt was the sole landlord in NZ.
  It would have a constant revenue stream that wasn’t a tax and it could increase/decrease rents at whim, only rent to those of its choice thus ensuring votes, loyalty, and dependency. It could also use rental revenue to service/pay down its own debt and even build new rental houses.
  If you think this is absurd, it’s exactly what Dictator Dan (Premier of Victoria Aust) is in the throws of doing whilst simultaneously rewarding developers (albeit the chosen few) who funnel union membership, funds, votes, and loyalty to the cause.
  Has Bobbo Hood our finance minister been taking lessons from Dictator Dan?

    The constant revenue stream will not work Nick. You can not pay down debt with money that has been paid from the same bank account.
    All real Tax must come from the Net Taxpayer. That Net Taxpayer is getting tired of being squeezed. The Golden Eggs are becoming rarer, soon there will be none, and we will have full blown Socialism.

I read the lifestory of Sir Paul Adams of Tauranga. He has dedicated years of time and a big chunk of his hard earned wealth to needy people in the Bay of Plenty. Its a good Kiwi fight-to-the-top story but of someone who never forgot his roots and love of his community.

Then I thought of those jealous, bitter, small-minded politicians who would use the dead hand power of the state to force him to pay much of what he had worked for into the tax coffers where consultants and advisors, Iwi elitists, crooked and hopeless managers unable to make it in the private sector would waste it and deliver a fraction of it as inferior aid.

It is enough to make you weep.

  This absolutist “Government Bad” trope is just ridiculous and defies the dictates of reality. These anarchists and libertarians are completely out to lunch. Their argument is to lay out every possible negative aspect of government and say, “see, isn’t that horrible?” It is a complete caricature and strawman of government, and lacks all subtlety.
  
  These “individuals” who want less restraint and as little government as possible don’t seem to realise that they are advocating from a position of constraint and government – the things they want gone or diminished. Be careful what you wish for, would be my advice. The only thing keeping groups of people in a stable and coherent state is the external influence of a state.
  
  In their ideal “hands-off” world, what will inevitably happen is that a group who doesn’t share their view will coalesce, take control and then govern all of these would-be freedom lovers. Unless we are nomadic hunter gathers, you need government. As soon as people stopped moving around and settled in large groups, an organising structure was required to manage their affairs.
  
  People need to be governed by something other than their own will, because when you live in a society, there needs to be structure and organisation, otherwise its just chaos. To achieve structure and organisation, you need a state. A state manages conflicting individual wills.
  
  Because there will always be someone in control and a state apparatus to do so, the goal is to be the one who is in control. Rather than dispense with the institutions of power, you want to control them.
  
  The question isn’t “why do we need a state?” it is “what is the best way to use the state?”

    Don’t disagree. It’s quite possible the ghastly government syndrome is driven by complacency of the citizens leading to low accountability and entitlement overreach of the kind that Proudhon’s laments. The solution is not, as you say, no government, but perhaps some minimally viable government with routine, rather than ballot-day accountability.

When the weather station is at the airport & more adjacent to Cook Strait than the former PM is to her youth, it’s hardly surprising that the Capital is regarded as windy.

For my money, Palmy was windier in the couple of years that I was there. Regardless, I liked Council spokesman Richard MacLean’s comment –

“We all tend to take a wry interest in Auckland’s tornadoes, constant rain and frequent closures of the harbour bridge due to high winds – so I guess we all have our own weather-related crosses to bear” – now, that’s spin I can get behind!

Our Minister of Foreign Affairs met the US Secretary of State, while decked out in sneakers and casual wear like she was meeting a friend for brunch.
She looked comfortable, but distractingly ‘unstately’.
Perhaps symptomatic of this Labour Government, politicians who have forgotten who they represent.

Very interesting story in Stuff Politics today about the refusal of Police to release data on call-outs to 5 motels in Rottenrua being used as MSD gang camps. It took the Ombudsmen 18 month to prise what is very bad data from Police. From about 50 call-outs in 2016 to close to 500 in 2022.

While that was bad enough, it’s only representative of 5 motels, think of what other crime these people were committing and the impact on the community of that. Then there is the politicising of the Police in withholding data detrimental to the outgoing government.

Mitchell needs to give Coster a new set of a National governments expectations first thing on Monday the 16th of October and hold him accountable along with the rest of his top table in PNHQ. They are going to hate being held to account by an ex Constable. LOL

The government wants legislation so that retailers in NZ have to check no modern slavery in their supply chains. That dooms EVs, doesn’t it? Or a Congolese children extracting cobalt ore for the batteries excluded? What about the forced labour camps in China making solar panels?
I suspect a lot of unintended consequences will be caught up in this.

It’s good that Kiri Allen has resigned (but still on full pay one wonders?). She’s obviously has had a hard time over the years fitting in her parliamentary duties with her personal relationships, of which there have been many including a colleague. Maybe now she can concentrate on the next victim and not so much on pesky justice/work matters.

    It would appear in the top echelons of the Labour Parliamentary wing that little Chippy is well out of favour by the old guard of Labour Ministers.
    He is not doing publically what they want and have worked hard to get such as taxing everything they can by nefarious ways.
    I see Parker going into the lead position with Robertson and Little.
    Minor casualties like Wood will soon fall into line and Willie will jump anywhere he thinks he can see and advantage for Maori.

  Warren – I saw that on the news about Nelson Hospital. That $73 million is just the first amount of a total investment of about $1 billion that the labour government is committing to this.
  Although as a general rule I believe in spending money on hospitals, $1 billion seems a lot for a local provincial hospital??
  
  Then we find out that actual building of this hospital won’t start until 2025! So it’s all pie in the sky. This government announces things. But nothing ever happens. My understanding is that they have not started and completed one capital project since they have been in office?

Sigh. At tennis this morning I learned from one of the South Africans there that it snowed in Jo’burg recently for this first time in a decade or so. He seemed to be suggesting that this was evidence of ‘Climate Change!’ along with the hot weather in the Mediterranean (we all know that global warming causes cold weather as well as warm weather /s).
Not even The Guardian could bring itself to claim that ‘Climate Change!” dunnit though. It turns out that the city gets a wee dusting of snow every decade or so, and this is nothing exceptional.
I guess the point I’m trying to make is that the hysteria surrounding climate is so pervasive that people honestly believe that even unexceptional cold weather is due to ‘Climate Change!”.
There is a going to be a lot of work required to bring some sanity back into this topic and convince them that Nobel prize winng physicists who tell us there is no climate crisis might have a point.

  Maybe in their bones they realise that every other problem they face has more -ve impact on their lives.
  We have wonderful technology available to protect us from bad weather. We can go inside when it rains, turn the A/C on when it’s hot, turn the heater on when it’s cold.   So it was hotter before 120,000 years ago than it is now. What caused that, I wonder? Moreover, it must have cooled since then, so what caused that? Nature is characterised by cycles, cycles within cycles, and cycles within cycles of cycles. The direction of change vis a vis any quantifiable phenomenon depends on what point in the cycle you start measuring it.
  
  If you come across a clock for the first time and it reads, say 3:30, if you start recording the movements of the minute hand, you will conclude that it is rising (until the clock cycle reaches 4:00, at which point it will start trending downward).

Consumer published a test on 71 hybrid and EV vehicles. Unfortunately there is not a test on which brands are more prone to self igniting. I mean if you are paying up to $250,000 fo a car you expect some data.

  EV fires were significantly lower than the others, with 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles. So of the approximately two million EVs on U.S. roads, less than two out of a 1,000 will catch fire.
  Per AutoinsuranceEZ, ICE vehicles are more than 60 times more likely to catch fire than an EV, while hybrids are more than 130 times more likely to catch fire than an EV.
  
  There’s your answer, avoid hybrids and avoid ICE vehicles if you’re worried about self-combustion

    Major cities like NY are reporting lots of fires from E-bike batteries.
    Its a major problem now.

      Insurance companies don’t care how hard the fires are to put out, they assess risk. 25 per 100,000 < 1,530 per 100,000. Possibly with some offset for more extensive damage to EVs that do catch fire, but I can’t imagine there are too many economically repairable fire-damaged ICE vehicles either.
      
      E-bike fires are another matter, you’re right there. Too many fires and accidents, governments will start regulating them and liability insurance might become a requirement.

        Because they cant contain EV fires like an ICE fire then its more likely that the whole ship goes up.

    The difference is that battery cars catch fire while sitting (unplugged) in your garage overnight or on a ship at sea or in a parking building.
    Soon you will get a discount on car insurance if kept in a garage but a surcharge on your house insurance.

My school leaver son is finally heading in the direction I tried steering him in about a year ago, and is looking for an apprenticeship to take him into the industrial electrical field, in which I myself operate. Over the last couple of weeks I have taken him to see a few friendly contacts, and I’m pleased to report we have some very solid prospects going into next year. But it was interesting to note what the industry is looking for when considering an apprentice, and how the education system is not delivering. My contacts all require young people with a good grounding in English, mathematics, and the physical sciences. These young people appear to no longer exist. Everywhere we went we ended up discussing how desperately poorly the current education system is serving our kids. I’m sure I don’t need to repeat everything here – there can’t be any regular KB correspondents who aren’t well aware of the travesty. However the last week has brought it even further home to me with a very practical example of how the bullshit education system is screwing up our kids’ prospects.

  But, to his credit, he is industrious, doing bar work alongside his studies. This means that he will finish his degree with little debt.

  Those versed in maths and physical sciences end up in *real* jobs. The rest end up in jobs such as education administrators and policy, Parliamentary staffers, union officials etc. So there is no one to champion the teaching of maths and physical sciences, and stop the teaching being watered down. There needs to be a ‘technical’ stream starting Year 10 teaching English, Maths, Science (emphasis on physics, electricity and some computer science), metalwork or woodwork and tech drawing and possibly some elementary business practice.

  Alongside those skills there is also the work ethic. Turn up, don’t stand around on your phone, stickability. One of ours did a trades foundation course – more than 20 started, 4 finished and went on to apprenticeships. Not a cabbage course, but not that difficult either.

    That trend has been observed by my contacts. It’s one reason why they insist on pre-trade before taking on the apprentices. So many kids have such a poor work ethic that the pre-trade, among its other virtues, is a way of sorting the wheat from the chaff before an employer commits to them.

If a driver has an accident due to a medical event will they have to get a doctor’s clearance before they drive again? I think so.

If I am correct, then if a driver has an accident due to mental health issues should they not need a clearance from a medical professional?

  It is up to her doctor. A doctor can declare a person unfit to drive and then advise NZTA. Indeed doctors have a legal obligation to do so.

    Not so sure about the NZTA bit. There seems to be no obligation for a doctor to report to NZTA that a doctor told a patient not to drive. It seems strange there is no ‘black and white’ obligation here. It would be ridiculous if a doctor had to report to NZTA that a patient was not fit to drive for 24 hours following an anesthetic.

      I checked the Act. Doctors need to advise the NZTA if they have reason to believe that the person will drive against the advice of the doctor.
      
      As soon as the doctor says “don’t drive” If you ignore that it is like driving without a licence with all the consequences that go with it.

  There is probably no onus on the part of the driver. If a medical practitioner considers that a driver is unfit to drive he or she should advise the driver accordingly and that is legally binding. However there seems to be no legal obligation for the practitioner to report it so the driver has his licence cancelled. Whether a driver is deemed to be unfit for mental health reasons is very much a matter of subjective judgment and a practitioner would be looking for good reasons to declare a driver unfit. In the case of a licence application a practitioner can presumably more readily flag concern when doing the certificate. Dementia is easy to show compared with general mental instability.
  Kiri will not necessarily lose her licence (it is only mandatory for careless driving causing injury or death or for drink drive more serious than an infringement). The Police presumably can raise unfitness with NZTA who can then follow up.

This is in a country which is the world’s largest exporter of gas and which has gigantic reserves.

These new houses will be all electric. With electricity generated by lignite or “brown coal”.

  If Australia imported gas and burned it in Australia, the emissions would count against any Australian emissions targets. Just like burning Indonesian coal in New Zealand counts against New Zealand obligations.

      If a power Co burns coal in New Zealand it must buy emission units in the ETS..
      
      I don’t know why the power Co uses coal from Indonesia. Presumably it is cheaper than New Zealand coal. But it has nothing to do with emissions obligations or targets. IIRC cement manufacturing and milk powder production here also uses imported coal.
      
      Emissions are counted in the country where the fuel is consumed. For example, Australia is the world’s largest coal exporter. But it does not need to count the emissions from that coal in it’s emissions obligations in international treaties.

Has the Christchurch Press online page had a makeover?

It looks quite different today.

Perhaps Stuff is preparing its regional titles for a possible fire-sale once the new government whacks the State subsidies.

Today’s Press online has added to its title, the words, Te Matatika. The online Maori dictionary translates this as “be right, straight, ethical, fair, equitable, honest, impartial, unbiased, upright”.
It’s worth a laugh but good luck to anyone trying to sell that Maori title!

The news sections, have work, too. For example, “pakihi” for the business section. Even the mysterious “brands” gets a translation -“korero whaitohu” which seems to mean talk about signs or marks.

But the site does have an interesting article today. One Nathan Raureti Symington, aged 38, is jailed for two years. This was for:

First – Filming himself shooting at replicas or pictures of NZ politicians and posting the video on the internet.

Second – Being found found with objectionable publications related to the March 15, 2019 mosques terror attack – including a video depicting the shootings in the style of a video game.

Symington looks to be a piece of work, to use the vernacular, but two years prison for this while Penitiketo Uhatafe, for example, in February, was sentenced to home detention on a manslaughter charge after killing his female partner with a blow to the head? (To be fair, he had spent seven months in jail on remand.)

Or compare the Symington jailing with the home detention sentence Matu Tangi Matua Reid was serving on serious violence charges when he went on the shooting rampage in central Auckland this month.

  He seems to be predicting fuel price rises in the order of 10c/l, as he claims that petrol costs would go up by about $5/week (I’m assuming the average commuter uses a tank of gas a week).

  Michael Laws on The Platform interviews a mate of his every now and again about this emissions business and he says that if we don’t meet our 2030 targets we could be in the gun for fines up to something like $24bn! (I think that’s annually), depending on how badly we fail to meet our targets.
  So it seems that we’ve either committed ourselves to economic hardship, or on the other hand, economic hardship.

    I posted on this a couple of times. It is not “fines”. They are international emissions credits. If we cannot achieve the reductions here, we will need to pay other countries to reduce their emissions, eg Bulgaria, Poland, Belarus.
    
    Treasury has calculated that these costs could exceed the amount we spend on the Health budget. (I am out and about so can’t easily post to the link but you can easily Google the Treasury advice)
    
    Is Chris Luxon aware of all this? Who knows.
    
    Forget about the 2050 targets. I doubt that the 2030 targets will survive.

Our police are amazing but if you have honestly never meet someone that is frustrated with the time it takes police to turn up, etc etc, then you are either stupid, a liar or locked in your office playing tiddlywinks, or all three. They are over worked, under staffed and constant let down by the courts.

I have never once met a business owner or a member of the public, who has been a victim of crime, that has ever complained about the level of service from our police people – they do an outstanding job and I hear that wherever I go.

Came across this in my emails. This needs to go back in schools. OK it is woodshop, but in my case metalshop. I was shit at wood and still am. Late sixties metalshop involved in die and mold making with cores. Heating aluminium in a crucible and pouring the mold.. Parts fettled and then machining. Lathework meaning setting gears to put a thread on a pipe without a die (or tap in the other bits) We were making a fully adjustable desk lamp, even wiring it for 240V.
This is what sent me off to a 50 year career in engineering fabrication.
