Looking like the lethal Hawaii fire was man-made but not in the way you think. The land that burnt used to be productive farmland but the farms closed when farm workers couldn’t afford houses in the area because of the government’s laws restricting development. The flammable grasses took over. State didn’t want to manage them by controlled burns. The electricity lines that started the fire weren’t maintained as the company prioritised green connections rather than upkeep on what they had. They couldn’t get water to firefight because the department was headed by an indigenous progressive who believed in the oneness of water (the future under 5 waters?). The alarms weren’t sounded – claims made they wouldn’t have been able to get out anyway as only one exit.
Needless to say, the State is a Democrat sinecure so its bound to be some right winger or climate change’s fault, rather than address the ineptitude of their officials.

      Notorious air travel opponent and current Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was set to return various sticks from a Leipzig museum to the Kaurna Aborigines.
      
      Another hypocritical ‘green’ ideological lunatic who tells people not to fly, but embarks on a round the world trip to virtue signal.
      
      Apparently, performing these close liberal connections for the media requires the massive carbon emissions of long airplane flights, even for a Green politician who is in general opposed to air travel for ordinary people and once toyed with a proposal to ban all domestic flights in Germany.
      
      The centrepiece of Baerbock’s junket was set to be a tedious post-colonial liturgical exercise in Canberra, at which she would oversee the return of “cultural assets” from the Grassi Museum in Leipzig to the Aboriginal Kaurna people. These objects include a fishing net, a long thin stick reported to be a spear, and two shorter sticks variously described as a club and a digging stick or a wooden sword-cum-club and a digging-stick-cum-bark-peeler. The truth is that they’re just sticks and nobody knows what they were for.

        This post from eugyppius is one of my favourite light reads from him. His deftly wielded snark was beautiful. One of my favourite bits is this:
        
        Baerbock and her entourage departed Germany on their rickety aircraft without incident, landing to refuel at Abu Dhabi late Sunday or early Monday morning. They took off again at 3:33 am bound for Australia, but the pilots found they could not retract the landing flaps. They had to dump 100,000 litres of fuel to make the overweight plane fit for landing. When jets dump fuel at altitude, it is aerosolised; the small droplets eventually decay into water vapour, ozone and carbon dioxide, all of which would normally contribute to the greenhouse effect, but as in this case the fuel was released on behalf of Germany’s leading Green climate botherer, we can be assured that the action had if anything an emissions-reducing effect.

  Those power lines in Hawaii are ugly. They spoil photos but you just have to put up with them. Big black connection boxes up in the air as well.
  Some guys were doing electrical work at the Aston Waikiki. I asked them about it. They can’t underground as the Islands are volcanic they said. So what about the water and sewerage, I don’t see those pipes up in the air. They looked at me like I had 3 heads.

  One News told us that it was strong winds that blew over some power pole, which then started the fire.
  We all know that strong winds are fueled by “Climate Change!”, so it was dirty fossil fuels that actually caused the fire.

  In Hawaii (and NZ) they usually sound as a Tsunami warning….. Head for high ground… and that would have been the wrong direction for Lahaina, as the fires were coming down from the hills.

      Aus is the driest inhabited continent on earth. It has extreme weather. There’s plenty of evidence of vast fires going way back into the mists of time. The fires of the last 50 years (not to mention the last 200 years) are not at all “unprecedented”, despite the spin from the media and doomer activists.

  To be fair (why, the lefties aren’t fair?) high voltage electricity lines often cause these sorts of sparks that light fires – with or without maintenance. This is especially common in hot weather where there are also high winds carrying dust or similar.
  
  But often it is difficult to tell if the fire caused the sparks or the sparks caused the fire. Smoke and such often provide a high conduction path that causes high voltage lines to arc.
  
  This was common in South Africa in the 1970s/80s where fires in the sugar cane fields were common.

It is refreshing to read intelligent, informed commentary on a topic. The WHO’s Proposed Amendments Will Increase Man-Made Pandemics by Dr. Meryl Nass sets out is in well documented detail how treaties that were at one time restrictive of bioweapons R&D have been steadily eroded, with the WHO now proposing a coup de grâce that actually incentivises this research while empowering them to declare and centrally manage global pandemics on a whim.

New Zealand is supporting this, as is the UK… but at least they have MPs here who oppose it: “It amounts to a vast transfer of power to the WHO…[and] represents an assault on our freedoms”. — Danny Kruger, UK MP.

Labour and the Greens are a lost cause because a jolly good infestation of totalitarianism is needed if their dreams of perpetual elite status are to be realised. So where are National and/or Act on this? Absent it would seem, content as they are to land soft policy wins while the prospect of global elites feasting on our sovereignty looms large.

We deserve better, and simply dispatching the utterly useless/dangerous mob at the helm today achieves little in the long term.

A farmer, in his fifties, known to me, committed suicide last week. It is not an isolated incident, sadly. He found the pressure too much. He just couldn’t cope any more with everything crowding in on him from all directions.

With farm prices down he was facing a financial loss. The processors of his products are spending megabucks on reducing emissions. Lower payouts. His end customers around the world have less to buy his goods because they are being taxed and forced to spend more reducing their emissions. Their governments are facing inflation, increased regulations, pressure from green groups, money grubbing scientists faking data and entitled kids who march against something they know nothing about.

At home, a wet autumn and winter made day to day work difficult. There was a time when he felt he was a valued member of the community, contributing to his community and country. Now all he sees is criticism. “Farmers have ruined our rivers”, “dairy is spoiling the environment”, “farmers produce half our emissions and are doing nothing to reduce them”, “farmers need to change to regenerative farming”, “farmers must adapt or die”, and so it goes on.

Government regulations keep coming, council keeps making new rules, more taxes, new forms to fill out, meetings to attend to be told the change, fix, pay more, adapt, more time in the kitchen doing growing paper work, higher costs in rates, levies, fees. Threats of new taxes. Diesel price gone through the roof – doubled. Fertiliser up again – 45%. Farm inflation running high – 13% and rising. Interest cost up again. Bank wants debt reduced faster. Can’t find good labour any more.

Neighbouring farms going into trees – 50,000 hectares in 2021. District population falling. Threatening and expensive RMA changes, district plan changes with new rules, regional council regulations, drones sneaking around inspecting, biodiversity claims, controls on fertiliser use, SNA’s and new regulations on water, wintering stock, Iwi SASM claims with unknown implications. The appears to be no end to the pressure.

Regulators need to stop. At all levels. We are killing our best, most reliable golden egg laying goose by strangulation.

        That the powers that be (internationally) seemed to have acted in this atrocious manner, in unison (re covid). Why would such a diverse group. all act the same?

        Maybe the food supply (farming) is next?

      I heard Luxon on ZB the other day taking calls on the Woodham show. I was actually quite impressed by the way he came across and answered the questions until he had a caller ask if in the light of new data which has shown that methane has been over estimated as a greenhouse gas to the tune of over 400% would his government be adjusting our emissions targets accordingly. He went on about how valued are hard working farmers were and how National love them and moved on not answering the question at all. Why would that be I wondered wouldn’t this new information be grasped with both hands by any government trying to hit emission targets, unless of course reducing emissions wasn’t why you were reducing emissions.

  Farming was going along OK until Dairying started on the Canterbury plains. Yes – it had been an up and down industry and like all industries had its bright lights and dull lights.
  
  But the Canterbury plains are simply not suitable for dairy. Zillions of litres of water were needed and the least costly way of getting them was to drill holes.
  Over the years people travelling around the plains looked at those irrigation monsters pouring water onto the stones and shingle (because thats what the plains are made of) and they thought ‘that just doesnt look right’. The shine – or lack of negative thoughts – slowly went off farming. Yes the effects of climate change (if there really is such an effect yet) doesnt help. However slowly but surely the public view of farming went down hill – and everytime someone saw those watering monsters crawl across the land the worse the image of ALL farming became. Add to that the proposal that the Dunedin accountant has for a 20,000 cow ‘farm’ in the McKenzie basin – which would need lots and lots of irrigation monsters (I bet that the shine has gone off that proposal in light of todays further drop of the Fonterra next season milk solids price)
  
  …And it came to pass that it was OK to politically kick shit out of the farmers – and in the tradition of needing to blame someone for everything – the government has been doing just that.

  RIP to your friend and condolences to you.
  My 2c, for what it’s worth.
  All should be done to rectify this political attack on our biggest (Almost only) industry.
  In fact, if the Govt. wants to help.
  1. Encourage the Intellectual property that 200 years of farming has taught our farmers.
  2. Encourage small and large manufacturing, associated with farming to produce tools that make it easier (export market here I think)
  3. Broaden our industrial base, so as to take pressure off the rural sector to be our only source of income.
  4. Commend farmers for good working practices, ie how many Km of fencing already installed to keep stock out of rivers,m how many shelter belt trees planted that are not currently counted toward our carbon off set as a country, etc more on effluent recycling etc etc etc
  Just few ideas, that others may know more about.
  BTW, private companies could help. in a small way.
  I heard that when the weighing equipment for stock breaks, the farmer is told to replace it and there is no viable option for repair.

  Both Labour and the Greens want to give the vote to 16yo kids who know nothing about these things except what their left-leaning teachers have drummed into them under the guise of ‘teachers know everything.’
  If/when they achieve this, votes for 16yos will become the norm, and Capitalism as we know and remember it will be a thing of the past.
  Remember, Winston Peters stated that Capitalism was dead when he sided with that Communist Cretin Arden and put her in charge of NZ letterly to be referred to as Aotearoa.

    I don’t see any of NZ’s significant parties competing for our vote, who will serve justice in this matter.
    
    I think they are either blind/deaf/dumb – or embarrassed and are hoping most people will just go “oh well” and move on.
    
    I am in touch with quite a few other ex-NZ professionals and families who have dead or damaged loved ones, and I am quite sure of two things:
    (a) the Govt, Medical Council, MOH, politicos and jab cheerleaders will never publicly admit they got it horribly wrong from fright, laziness, power-hunger, profit – or all of the above.
    (b) those who lost loved ones, health, jobs, careers, financial security and 2+ years of normal child and adult life will never forgive or forget.

    Look at their policy, any emissions drops will come from science, at no added cost, believe it or not, most farmers want to do their bit, don’t say know, because I know it’s factual through talking to farmers in my work capacity, they want these inhibitors, they want these emissions lowering rye grasses, there are other products to deliver even lower emissions, how about you decide if you want science based approach or simply being dictated to to shut down farms

The Labour Party are getting desperate. They are trying to trash democratic norms to ram through a stalking horse for their own electoral self-interest.

Last night we spotted that Local Government Minister Kieran McAnulty has very quietly introduced to Parliament a last minute bill to change the voting age for local body elections from 18 to 16.

McAnultyThe Electoral (Lowering Voting Age for Local Elections and Polls) Legislation Bill was given just a few seconds of time for the title to be read out in Parliament and tabled.

The Bill establishes a new category of electors, named “youth electors”, and provides for 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds to be registered on a youth electoral roll to vote in council elections. Incredibly, this move to change the voting age has barely been mentioned by the media.

Normally, a Ministerial press release alerts media when the Government is introducing a significant bill to Parliament. But Kieran McAnulty’s media team have been unusually quiet. There is not a single piece of Beehive communications that mentions the Bill.

We’ve spent the morning working through the Bill (it is surprisingly complex as electoral rolls are used for not just local and general elections, but also jury duty pools and various trust elections).

What is clear is that a significant amount of work has gone into this Bill and Labour are not simply kicking the tires on the idea.

We think Labour are gambling on just slipping this one through – probably under urgency next week. Labour may be betting that if they can get this through quietly, it’ll just stay on the books after the election without public outcry to repeal it.

Make no mistake, this is a stalking horse to ready New Zealand for 16 year olds to vote at elections – a change that would greatly benefit Labour and the Greens.

Instead of having a national conversation to build consensus for change (or not), the Government is abusing the final few weeks of its absolute majority in Parliament.

  What is happening to our wonderful New Zealand? I know what has happened under Labour in the past Governances, but now we are going way beyond. It is the worst.

  A friend of mine who has dealt with him directly has a very low opinion of him. There will be those within the Mainstream Media that have direct knowledge of how his campaign was funded, and given that Open Season was declared on the likes of Sam Uffendell, I wonder why Kieran McAnulty has been able to get off with no scrutiny of his actions?

  You clearly missed my response to Matt Long back in March, where I said, here, https://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2023/03/general_debate_10_march_2023.html/comment-page-1#comment-3333587, that most 16- and 17-year-olds would likely vote National/ACT. After all, it stands to reason that pupils in the upper decile schools are more likely to be politically aware (and interested enough to vote) than their lower decile peers.
  
  I say again, lowering the voting age to 16 “would have little or no impact on the outcome of future general elections, but it doesn’t suit the right-wingers here to accept, or even acknowledge, that.”
  
  Two further points. The government made it clear for several months that it would be introducing this bill. There was no sneakiness about it.
  
  Secondly, it seems there is no guarantee that the bill will be enacted before parliament rises. Consequently, given that the polls increasingly suggest we will see a change of government in October, it will likely die in select committee, anyway.

      Goodness me, you draw a long bow there, Ra. Young women 18–25 possibly tend to vote centre-left, too. So what? As I showed with my overseas voting figures, the 19% Green vote had no effect, at all, on the seat allocation following the 2020 election.
      
      So, my point is, the 16- and 17-year-olds most likely to vote in general elections will not only be insufficient in number to skew the result to the Left, to any noticeable extent, but that, in any event, those of that cohort will most likely be from upper decile schools and therefore more likely to vote National / ACT. And don’t forget, 16-and 17-year-olds include young men, too.
      
      Besides, is there any evidence that governments in Austria have lurched to the Left over the last 10 or so years, as a result of young women, let alone young men, voting? I suspect not.

    China hasn’t built up its cache of Military Hardware and Personnel for them to become obsolete. The Hawke’s Bay Chaindog Meth rehab programme run by the Mongrel Mob’s Harry Tam was required to deliver an evaluation progress report by 30 June 2023 under the terms of its government funding agreement.

However a response to an OIA request has confirmed that no such document exists.

So that’s another $2.75 million gone up in smoke with no return.

      I haven’t been able to find any information about the survival rates of the young trees planted out in the last 5 years…
      
      It is one thing to state that 572,577,000 trees have been planted since 2018, but if millions of those young plants have died off in the last few years, then there’s not so much to celebrate.
      
      It’s very easy to shove a young plant in the ground… it’s quite another thing to ensure that the exposed tree (especially if a native tree) survives its first few years and grows into woody maturity.

  The sustainability story for our commodity ingredients (which makes up 97% of our Dairy & Meat industry output) is of course nonsense. The Chinese, as an example, take about 90% of all our lower value lamb cuts and further process them. All traceability and NZ’s “sustainability” green wash story is immediately lost.
  
  Hewitt mostly talking about the 3% of value add products that our commodity agri sectors produce.

I raised the question yesterday of when EVs would start being charged RUC.

Someone pointed out that the NZTA website said 1 April 2024, but I heard David Parker later on Heather DPA’s show, saying that the govt was still thinking about it, and hinting that it might be a couple of years.

Why, for goodness sake? Why not simply charge them in exactly the same way as diesel vehicles are charged?

        I was under the impression that the only thing different with those tyres is that they are foam lined to reduce road noise. I have them on my EV and they’re great. Yet to decide if I will pay the premium price to replace them though. Might just put up with the extra road noise on a cheap tyre.

        Hilux varies anywhere from 1,490 to 2,055 kg kerb weight depending on configuration, add on 60kg for 80 litres of fuel.
        
        Singling out EVs causing more damage to roads because of their weight is silly – you can make the same argument for the increase in popularity of SUVs and “work” utes like the Ford Ranger (for years NZ’s best selling vehicle) which has a kerb weight of between 1,789 kg and 2,431 kg. I don’t seem to recall many complaints around here about road damage caused by Ford Rangers before it became fashionable to cry about battery weights.
        
        If the road damage and the resultant cost of maintenance is related to vehicle weight, by all means levy RUC on how heavy the vehicle is – but that means ALL vehicles.

      cmm, I on occasion look at comments on the Consumer site and anything around EVs contain plaudits from obvious Greenies. Any other opinion is quickly shot down by the electric faith orchestra. I have sort of worked out that Consumer being Wellington based has a fair share of Green subscribers. And then there is the plastic straw issue.

      The worst part about driving an EV is that people assume you are a crazy greenie. I often experience quite aggressive driving from people in Utes and SUVs.
      
      I think you’ll find that a minority of people actually purchase an EV to “save the environment”. Most people purchase them because they want a modern, quiet, cheap to run vehicle with excellent performance for the price.

Why does the Sky CEO still have their job? Clearly someone who has no idea about tech, running a tech company.

The new skybox cpu is woefully underpowered. It is like Sky went to aliexpress and customised the cheapest hardware they could find.

Sky would have been better off upgrading the old skybox , by boosting the cpu, adding 4k and shrinking the chassis (like sony does with the playstation ).

    Mine seems to have a 5 second lag everytime I push a button on the remote – not a great experience but I hear the new boxes are even worse. Definitely not in any hurry to get one.
    
    As an aside, I got Skys latest ‘your price is going up’ email this week – so called them and removed the channels that were increasing. Good job Sky – you wanted an extra $2 month, now you’ll get $28 less.

  Similarly with PIs was even less.

Londoners are losing patience with the green climate insanity. Mayor Kahn has been implementing areas called ULEZ. Ultra Low Emission Zones.

ULEZs are areas in London accessible only to low-emission vehicles. Cars that do not meet the city’s environmental standards are charged £12.50 ($16) for entering the ULEZ. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras positioned around the zones read license plates and check them against the vehicles’ make and model in real time. If a vehicle does not meet the environmental threshold, the fine is levied against the car owner. Failure to pay can lead to fines as high as £258 ($331).

Well, Londoners are raising the middle finger and it is wonderful to see. An example for all.

But as of July, at least 200 cameras were stolen or vandalized by a group of citizen activists who call themselves the Blade Runners. According to the Daily Mail, they have promised not to rest until every such camera is removed or destroyed “no matter what.”

In the last two years, this government has spent close to 300 million dollars getting people with money into EV’s.

At the same time the no chargeing of RUC on these road users has resulted in probably 65 million dollars in foregone income. I’ve calulated this by taking the total number of EV’s registered in the past 2 years, assuming an average mileage of 10000 km per annum per vehicle and charging RUCs at the same cost of Diesel. I haven’t included PHEV, but I’m sure that has an impact.

So in 2 years, we are looking at a 360 million dollar expense, which over 20 years, is 7.2 BILLION of Roading Funding that has gone.

EV’s need to be subject to RUC, if for no other reason to stop subsidising the well off that buy them, and to contgribute not only to roading, but also the extra electrical generation that will be required as the electric fleet grows.

A grammar rant – unnecessary use of qualifiers.
We don’t visit with, we simply visit (the with is unspoken).
If we are gathering we are coming together, or collecting, gather doesn’t need to have ‘together’ tacked on the end (and neither does collect)
In these days of sentences lacking ‘that’ which signifies the subject of a clause/verb and enhances clarity it is ironic that together and with are added unnecessarily.
Does anyone still know the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs?

Cannot believe so many want to throw away their votes on minor parties and even Winston First. My worry is we are in for another term of Labour or a marginally successful and hamstrung National Government.
Get the Nats in with a good majority and enough Act MPs to stiffen their sinews. I think even they know that after six squandered years they have to hit the ground running.
Keep Winston out of it. Surely we all know by now he can’t be believed and will always rewrite history to gull the stupid. After all, he was Jacinda’s right hand man and chief fanboy.

  I don’t know if I’ll be voting NZ First, and I never have done so before. However, I do know I won’t be voting National or Act, as I have for the last 3 decades, as they no longer represent my values.
  
  Here’s just a few things from the NZ First website (https://www.nzfirst.nz/2023_commitments) that are very important issues to me but National and Act lack the courage to confront:
  
  “Under New Zealand First vaccine mandates will end”
  “New Zealand First will repeal the Therapeutic Products Act”
  “Stop indoctrination by removing gender ideology from the curriculum”
  “Ensure a full scale, wide ranging, independent, one year inquiry conducted publicly with local and international experts, into how the Covid pandemic was handled in New Zealand”
  “New Zealand First will ensure no men are in women’s spaces or sports”
  
  National and Act are now beholden to globalist influences and can’t be trusted to represent the best interests of New Zealand. They won’t push back on climate change, the United Nations, the World Health Organisation (the pandemic treaty), the Blackrock deal, Chinese influence etc.
  
  There are other minor parties I would rather support, but NZ First is the only one that is going to get into parliament so my expectation is that his support will only grow when this becomes clear to minor party voters.

I like actuaries. They are paid a lot of money by insurance companies to do good analysis.

So when they report significant unexplained excess deaths in young people, I take notice. The charts are useful because they divide excess deaths into “COVID” and “Non COVID causes”

If these two guys threatened people, they clearly committed an offence. However, if they stood in a public place and shouted out questions about the Ministry wasting money, I doubt that they committed an offence.

The staff may well have been offended. However offending people is not an offence. Indeed, I would support the rights of any citizens to protest outside Government agencies.

  It’s not just the time spent in Prison, but also time spent on Parole since leaving prison, and a recall to prison based on very dubious circumstances.
  
  All in all, since the age of 23 until aged 60, he has been undfer control of the corrections department for things that he didn’t do, and convicted under very dubious evidence that had been altered in ways that may well be deemed criminal.
  
  Imagine if this had happened to you, or someone you cared for. Imagine that the State lied and manipulated evidence, and as a result you lost the ability to have a life because of the dishonesty of people working for the state.
  
  Now come up with a compensation figure that you woud be happy with.
  
  and yes, it sucks that the taxpayer is on the hook for this, but then if that’s the price we pay to have a justice system that is accountable to itself when it gets things wrong, then so be it.
  
  When I was younger, I knew a young man by the name of Aaron Farmer, who had Aspergers and was wrongly convicetd of rape and sentenced to 8 years. He spent nearly 3 years in prison before being exonerated by DNA evidence and it was found that the police had lied.
  
  Aaron got $351000 in compensation in 2011.
  
  He died in a traffic accident in 2019. It’s believed he ended his own life.

  “Almost all of the people associated with (JFK’s assassination) were involved with the Miami Station, which was the largest CIA Station at the time and was basically the Cuban Station”, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said. “The people who were involved were people like Bill Harvey and David Atlee Phillips, who was clearly involved in my uncle’s assassination. By all evidence, he was Lee Harvey Oswald’s handler at the CIA. E. Howard Hunt made a confession. David Morales, who was the chief hitman, ran the Operation Phoenix program in Vietnam, he killed ten thousand people, he also gave a confession of being in Dallas.”
  
  The Cuba Station was “angry at my uncle for not sending in air cover during the Bay of Pigs invasion”, Kennedy said. “After the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, my uncle developed this friendship with Khrushchev, and he shut down all the attacks on Cuba by Alpha 66 and other groups who were harassing Cuba and sinking Russian ships. They were operating flotillas out of South Florida, and doing raids. My uncle (JFK) and father (RFK) sent the Coast Guard to confiscate their ships and weaponry and arrest those that kept doing it.”
  
  “Why not just admit it now? Why would Biden not declassify the documents?” related to the JFK assassination, Tucker asked. “And why wouldn’t Trump” declassify the documents, RFK asked. “Because he was convinced by Mike Pompeo not to”, Tucker said.
