Maybe this is the solution to provide reliable energy for NZs electricity needs? From Atomic Insights:
“Officials at the Kurchatov Atomic Energy Institute have announced plans to build at least fifteen nuclear power barges, each with a total of 140 MW of electric power capacity. The power plants on the barges will be based on the successful KLT-40 nuclear ice breaker engine, a 70 MWe design that has proven its capability to operate in the harsh Arctic environment.
The cost of each two unit plant is estimated to be approximately US$250 million, with a projected break even after ten years of operation. The design core life for the plants will be approximately 13 years, after which time the barge will be returned to the building yard for refueling. Spare barges for replacement power during the one-year refueling and overhaul period will be part of the system.
Active negotiations for similar plants are in progress with the governments of China, Indonesia, and the Philippines, all with similar needs for a reliable supply of electricity.”
Just tie them up to the wharf are even just anchor the barge in the middle of the harbour at cities around the North Island coast and run the power cables into the local substation. A fleet of ten would replace all the current coal or gas power stations without needing any more windmills. Kings Wharf in Auckland and near the end of Wellington runway would be ideal sites. There used to be coal fired power stations there. No need for resource or change of land use consents. No koha for site blessing. Don’t have to worrry about seismic requirements. When they can’t be refurbished any more, sink them in the Kermadec trench so that takes care of radioactive waste.
They are also can use the waste heat to desalinate water. That will help leaky Wellington without damming more streams.
If the world is boiling and there is a climate crisis, the Greens should welcome this proposal with open arms. If they don’t, then just maybe they have another agenda.

  This is old news. China was keen to tow a few of these around the South China Sea to be used wherever needed during island building. Russia was also keen to use them in isolated towns around the Arctic coast. However both countries have abandoned the idea in the wake of the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage. I’ll leave it to you to work out why.

  Not really suitable for NZ when a fixed one on land would be more practical.

  Agree that Vector’s Kings Wharf substation could sink 140MW. I was not sure about near Wellington Airport until I realised the old MED installed two 110kV cables to Evans Bay run at 33kV to allow for future upgrading. They can probably handle 140MW if run at 110kV.

  Meantime, The rest can not even secure the Red Sea supply chain.
  Good to know South Africa has deep sea Salvage vessels on standby for the increase in traffic flow due to going around the Cape.
  Not too sure about fuel supplies though.
  More inflationary pressures on consumers.

For a less hagiographic obituary of John Pilger after his recent death, the article in CapX https://capx.co/john-pilger-was-a-charlatan-and-a-fraudster/ lays out his career. He was an arrogant anti-American repressive regimes apologist and their unpaid publicist, though North Korea gave him an award. People have forgotten about how bad his errors of fact were, which he rarely corrected. And he hated being challenged. Kim Hill was just one of many who received his spite.

        I gave an uptick to MIkenmild.
        
        The Pilgers “”charlatan”” article gave a selective view of John Pilgers claims. Omitted was that Vietnam was itself starving and that the United States and others supported the Khmer Rouge.
        
        Even after the atrocities were announced. The UN lead by the USA endorsed the Khmer Rouges membership of the UN..
        
        PS. I have had the privilege to talk to a number of Cambodians who survived the horror of the KR.
        
        I could go on but in my opinion the blather in the article was anti Pilger slanted and of itself not unbiased journalism.

        Fighting for your country is an illusion.
        
        Soldiers are deployed to acquire or defend assets on behalf of corporate interests.

Intelligence experts in Singapore also ran training courses, Samay said.
        
        To allow Ministers to deny helping the Khmer Rouge, the SAS was ordered to train only soldiers loyal to the ousted Prince Norodom Sihanouk, and the liberal democrat former Prime Minister, Son Sann, who were fighting alongside Pol Pot’s Communists. However, Samay said the court would be told the Khmer Rouge benefited substantially from the British operation.’
        
        This makes Matts question below pertinent.

        One of the aspects of the accusation about the US and Britain is the implication that they were doing it during 1975-1979 genocide, rather than years afterward. In fact the support for years before was from North Vietnam, China and Russia, as part of the overall war against the Yankee Imperialists: training, weapons, you name it.
        
        And on top of this is that everybody, including the Chinese and the Vietnamese claimed the KR factions they were supporting after 1979 were not the baddies who had committed the genocide. Naturally Pilger never emphasised either of these aspects; leaving the implication that it was just Britain/USA all baddie.
        
        And naturally Pilger was happy to let these implications sit for readers who did not investigate the story themselves – a trait that the CapX article shows was consistent in his career because he was merely a Far Left polemicist and not a reporter, let alone an investigative reporter.

        No one has claimed that the US assisted the KR genocide. They merely helped the genocidaires to fight the Vietnamese-backed new regime. The US, of course, contributed to the KR’s earlier outrages by the illegal bombing which destroyed the country and enabled the KR to seize power.

        By your logic, do you also contend that training for the American GIs was also provision of training for the Stalinists, because both the Soviet Union and US fought the Axis Powers?

  It’s been interesting looking at this series of comments re British/American support for the Khmer Rouge. Makes a change from the theory that “The US carpet bombing made them do it”
  
  Either way, the fact is that almost every commie revolution had a Year Zero, whether they called it that or not. Lenin’s desires for a civil war to smash everything; Mao’s “Four Olds” campaign, and so forth. Given that history a KR-type genocide was always likely to happen sooner or later, especially in a smaller nation.
  
  And that core of truth about communist revolution is why plenty of Pilger’s Far Left associates, Wobblies and otherwise, defended the KR for years through the depths of the genocide – which I think far more of a black mark than the usual realpolitik of nation-states – and then spent more years deflecting from that core truth by yammering about the SAS and American carpet bombing.
  
  Anything to avoid admitting the truth, that at the heart of their Far Left movements is that they are mass killers and destroyers because theory demands it.

        JR, I have invested a fair sum to ensure that my family are protected from events that are unlikely to occur in the immediate future in terms of Life Insurance.
        I believe in removing unnecessary risks, and have even invested a fair sum in showing that similar amounts of carbon can be sequestered annually in top soil as is taken up by pine trees, except with topsoil it’s sustainable.
        There is a genuine but small risk the alarmists are correct, but their political solutions are worse than the risks, as usual.

        Maybe every climate expert as you put it, but once you weed out those on a payroll to promote AGW, and actually survey the climate scientists, you wil find most DON’T agree. Teachers, stay at home mums, gynecologists, and lefties employed are not scientists.
        
        If you want to prove your statement “just about every climate expert agrees that human emissions contribute to global warming”, how about a list of names, and expertise, and what they actually said.
        
        No-one, I repeat no-one, who is a bona-fide researcher, simply copies and pastes what someone else has said. That’s not research, that’s gossip.
        
        Genuine researchers always get the raw data and if they do not have access to it, they gather it themselves.
        
        Research is not just idling using Google or ChatGPT. Research involves critical thinking and the scientific method, and all the principles, premises, standards and methods those entail.
        
        instead of “just about every” state specifics. e.g. 11,174 out of 12,852.
        
        Say “here is the list” and in the list is the scientists, and each scientists details.
        
        If you have phoned say 1000, and listened carefully to what they said, and recorded it, and the ratio of 11,174/12,852 is roughly falling true, then yes you may be on to something. But until then it is all gossip, hearsay and bulldust.
        
        So how many actual climate scientists are in your total group, and how many is “nearly every”, and how many have you contacted?
        
        Consensus is not science. You would be better talking about the actual science than quoting an invisible list.

        And they would be totally correct. For goodness sake, scientists do not even know what percentage of oxygen is created in the sea by plankton. They estimate it is between 40% and 80%. Yet climate experts can narrow down temperature increase due to CO2 to ± six decimal points.
        
        Except James Shaw who can’t give any figures at all.
        
        And Greta Thunberg who doesn’t have any figures or models because she sees it all in 3D. Yeah right.

      I may not ‘know’ that the anthropogenic portion of the gentle warming we been blessed with has been a problem, but I can point to many instances where our lives have all improved since we’ve been using fossil fuels.
      There have been many predictions of how all our lives will be made worse due to the fraction of warming caused by FF use, many (most?) of which haven’t come true.
      I think there’s a very good case to argue that, so far, any small effect that we might have had on the climate (remember that even IPCC, whose job it is to look for it, have trouble finding any trend changes they can attribute to man) has been beneficial, or at least negligible.

      I think chance that AGW is real is >90%, though I have some doubts due to higher temperatures and sea levels of holocene climate optimum 5000 years back, huge unexplained temperature and sea level swings through the 12000 year long Holocene and particularly the cyclical sequence of Minoan, Roman, Medieval and now Modern warming periods at 1050 year intervals.
      
      This history of high variability is essential context for modern warming, but is studiously ignored by the venal thermageddonists.
      
      Agree that ‘climate emergency’ is Millennialist bullshit created to feather pockets of academics and various other rent-seeking elites.

        The worse “climate emergency” periods of the well documented Minoan, Roman, and Medieval warm periods were periods of enhanced prosperity. Cold kills far more people. With reliable and affordable energy sources (fossil fuels) humans can affordably engineer solutions to variations in climate. There is no evidence that slightly warmer temps cause more extreme droughts, fires, floods, cyclones etc etc. These things happen regardless. The richer we are (courtesy of cheap and reliable energy) the easier it is to engineer solutions to weather whatever nature throws at us.

      Because nothing man has done or can do will affect the climate one iota. If it is warming, which is in doubt given the vanishingly microscopic sample size, the reasons are certainly nothing to do with the single, inconsequential factor seized upon by the Marxists – man-made CO2.
      
      To believe that there’s some kind of thermostat, and that man, ignoring the large number of interconnecting factors that actually do influence the climate, and further ignoring the multiple natural events such as volcanic eruptions, both above and below the sea, can simply adjust the thermostat by means of tax, is delusional in the extreme.
      
      Two simple points to illustrate the folly of those who focus like zombies, on the hunt for brains, on man-made CO2:
      
      1. CO2 is very good for the planet, which is one of the reasons why it is becoming greener
      2. Evidence from ice samples in Antarctica have demonstrated that a warming planet increases the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, and not the other way around.

        As every boiler attendant will testify, pre-heating of the boiler feed water results in reduction/removal of dissolved gases in the said water. One of such gases is CO2.
        
        Warming of the sea water has precisely the same effect. CO2 and other gases dissolved in the sea water will evaporate to the atmosphere, according to the water temperature increase. At the time of writing, the Personkind has not come up yet with a practical method of Anthropogenic Heating of the Oceans. Not even Bill Gates, King Charles the Third and James Shaw, separately or together can do it.

    Perhaps I should have worded things differently. AGW is very widely accepted by climate scientists including sceptics like Dr Curry and Dr Koonin. The difference with the sceptics is that while they believe that human emissions cause warming they also believe that the amount of warming cannot be predicted with any degree of certainty like the alarmists claim.

So Greater Wellington Regional Council and a local iwi (Whanui Taranaki) want $42 million of taxpayer funding for saving birds. Based on a feasibility study that frankly looks vague but no worries because they just need some unspecified amount first to sort out an actual business case.

To be fair, ‘vague’ may be the way the article is worded, not holding my breath though.

    I don’t understand how matauranga Maori is supposed to come into it. It’s mentioned nowhere in the linked article. The concept of a predator-free area enclosed within a predator-proof fence is not “vague”, it’s very well established, having been successfully demonstrated at Zealandia and elsewhere.
    
    This is a proposal that will almost certainly deliver, on its own terms, ie providing a habitat where threatened native species can thrive and expand their numbers. What it will almost certainly not do, is return a profit in economic terms. Conservation projects never do, unfortunately

      Any commercial species exists in abundance. Shortage of sheep, cows, pigs, game birds, even very niche breeds? Nope. The research, husbandry and animal science around commercial farming is formidable.
      
      But try to commercially exploit a native species. That is, try to build up their stocks to the point they are capable of commercial exploitation and you’ll be harangued long and hard, probably made a target of investigation.
      
      Let’s be clear: if the kakapo were opened to commercial breeding we’d probably be eating them as a delicacy. Apparently they taste quite nice. Like fine chicken.

  This is ridiculous. Wellington has Zealandia; the halo effect has native birds spreading out across town. When combined with pest eradication efforts, especially but not exclusively on the Miramar peninsula, Wellington has more native birds than it has had since colonial times.
  
  While further efforts are not unwelcome, they should not be prioritised with public spending given that we are HUNDREDS of billions of dollars in debt.

The following was aired at the bar last evening – Jacinda is back and is said to get publicity by getting married very shortly.
It is now about a year since she ran away, and watched, whilst her Government, the Media Party. and the Labour Party got decimated.
As we understand there will be a mass forced defection from the Party HQ can we expect to see Ardern take the Presidency and/or the General Managers jobs or both.
She appears not to have found an overseas job as she has no qualifications, and no US Green Card to get her a job,
She has been finally found out by some that matter, so has no job.
Chippy will do as he is told once again, and her women acolytes and voters will adore her again.
This will see an improvement in the their ratings, and Ardern can reorganise the Party and the Media once again.

Is anybody able to make sense of NIWA weather outlooks?
Most of the country will see average rainfall, which apparently means we can’t rule out water restrictions and drought. Does that mean we don’t get much rainfall on average during summer? We might also see heavy rainfall and droughts. All bases are covered.
“Climate Change!” is apparently making El Nino events more intense (big claim, that), but not this one, because “Climate Change!” is making the seas warmer. Apparently it’s not easy coming up with an outlook, because “Climate Change!” is making things hard to predict.
And apparently, an outlook is not the same thing as a forecast.
In short, I’m no better off after reading the article.

    NIWA and MetService own virtually all the weather stations in NZ including the marine stations, hence why they have their own weather computing facilities.
    All the international weather services rely on satellite observations which aren’t nearly as accurate as ground weather stations.
    I personally find that MetService is highly accurate in their forecasts.

      On another note. Forcasting the ” Weather” used to require the most powerful super computers on the planet.

      It has not appeared to have eventuated. Which leads for to think AI is not what its cracked up to be.
      Weather forcasting , In my mind would be a way to prove how ” Great ” AI is.

      I, and many others, saw the billions of tonnes of rain heading for Auckland last year that NZ weather services didn’t see until it was too late.
      
      That’s just one instance of when they were unaware or wrong.

      It appears you get your info from “climate (alarmist) messaging” websites like “Skeptical Science”. Closed shops run by alarmist propagandists who will brook no honest debate with actually sceptical climate scientists (many who have published hundreds of papers and been recognised as top of their fields until the alarmist censorship complex got into gear).
      
      Ground stations have vast areas of sparse coverage, can be manipulated (as in placed in urban heat islands). Satellites scan the entire earth. Alarmists hate the satellite/balloon record as they show up the alarmist models as being junk science based on clearly wrong assumptions.

  Fwiw, Niwa were forecasting a hot and dry summer.
  We are getting a wet and cold one instead.
  Why ? El Nino has not kicked in as forecasted.
  All the rain / clouds are forming too the NE of NZ. Ie warm surface.
  I see similarities between fake forcasting and fake Airline saftey videos.
  Then you keep reminding yourself what is there real intention?

I was looking forward to a long hot summer due to favourable El Nino conditions now we’re told it’s not an El Nino like you think it will be. “Global temps rise produces more extreme weather” WRONG: The number of strong hurricanes and strong tornadoes per decade is lower than 100 years ago

“Global temps rise reduces crop yields” WRONG: Crop yields have grown and continue to grow tremendously. CO2 and warmth are beneficial to crops. That is why farmers build, rather than destroy, greenhouses and pump CO2 into them.

“Global temps rise faster than ever” WRONG: The Greenland data shows that 1C/century like now is normal for the last 11,000 years. Before that temps grew ten times faster than now.

“Global temps are higher than ever” WRONG: The Greenland, and archeological data shows that temps were higher during the medieval, Viking high, and much higher 3700 years ago, the Mycenaean high.

“Industrial emissions cause sea rise” WRONG: The seas were rising, at any long term shore gauge, at the same speed 100 years ago as now, in spite of emissions now 100 times bigger.

      Hawaiki is the traditional Māori place of origin. The first Māori are said to have sailed to New Zealand from Hawaiki.
      So this is a lie too Mike?
      The Hawaiian language and the Maori language are very similar. I struck this with many tour operators who bastardise the Hawaiian language just as Maori is here.

    Tricky things definitions and they easily become contradictory.
    
    By this definition Yvette, any Maori that left their historical home and integrated fully into NZ society would no longer be indigenous. A suspect that this would leave a very small percentage of indigenous Maori still around today. Many like TPM head John Tamihere would not be indigenous.
    
    So Mike based on Yvettes definition you need to change your statement from all Maori to “some Maori are indigenous to NZ.”
    
    An alternative definition is that anybody born in NZ is indigenous. Most of my folk have been here since the 1860’s. Like many kiwis this is the place that I originate from.
    
    The country is still being colonised to a certain extent. Wave after wave of new immigrants bringing different ethnicities, cultures, customs and commerce to these shores which change both them and the current inhabitants. As an indigenous person we either chose integration or separatism. Integration seems to be a more realistic path forwards than separatism – which by its nature creates the them and us situation that seems to get more and more politicised in NZ in recent times.

    The term Indigenous carries fish-hooks when applied to Tribal areas in NZ.
    
    Taranaki Tribes are not indigenous to the Wellington Area, but the Waitangi Tribunal treats them as the major beneficiary for land and compensation in the Wellington area.
    
    Ngati Mutunga and Ngati Tama are not the indigenous tribes of the Chatham Islands (both are North Taranaki Tribes), but the Waitangi Tribunal has recognised conquest of other tribes affords them rights.

      Having holidayed in the Chatham’s two summers ago it was evident that there continues to be a strained relationship between Moriori and the Māori settler colonists. It was not overt ie in conversation, but it was palpable as a response in certain situations. I understand the recent settlement between the Government and Māori, acknowledging so-called disadvantage to Māori in the Chatham’s has created fresh animosity and Moriori grievance towards Maori. Moriori are having to fight for official recognition now with the Government.
      
      Where is the NZ Government’s acknowledgment of Māori colonisation of Moriori and the disadvantage and near genocide of them? When will Māori acknowledge their settler colonisation of The Chatham’s/Rekohu (the Moriori name).
      
      Why is there no mention of Moriori in the 2020 Indigenous Collaboration Agreement on behalf of Australian Aboriginals and NZ Māori. Moriori, as the third native grouping, are excluded.

There is a story about the Carrington Estate, a resort in the far North and it falling on hard times. All the criticism for the lack of success is aimed at the various owners over the years and much of that criticism is valid.

However, there is no mention of how a few local Māori have made it tough for the business right from day one. Despite good job opportunities introduced into an area with high unemployment and good money circulating in the small community a few nasties made it very hard going for the investor/owners. Things like sugar in fuel, punctured tires, water left running, and other childish but hurtful methods were adopted.

But the media were never going to add that to their story. Who cares about balance and accuracy? Not our MSM.

Did anyone comment here on the story 2 days ago reported as “Waitangi Treaty Grounds bomb threat”?

When you read the story, some crank has sent a threatening email to multiple museums and hotels.

Rather than using the accurate headline, “Bomb threat received by multiple museums and hotels” the MSM have chosen the one venue to highlight which would create the most racial division and imply this is the work of some nefarious white supremicist.

Lazy reporting? Or malicious intent from an activist media?

For very obvious personal reasons related to my child, I am 150% in conflict with the medical and bureaucratic regimes overseen by the MOH and the Parliament of New Zealand.

That said, if there ever ends up being Nuremberg-style trials, as the aggravated mediaeval people used to say:

“Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest… like sheep to the slaughter.”

Clearly, this is excessive and I denounce it.

I would simply like to say that “we will never be free until the last bureaucrat is confined by intestinal adhesions from the last public health specialist.”

And I prophylactically denounce myself for extremism in the pursuit of liberty.
