    Nope, I disagree. Nobody does direct attacks any more. Instead they do attacks through proxies over many fronts.
    
    For example, Russia and China can pour more support into the Houthis.
    
    But still by far the best attacks are non-military:
    * Keep feeding the USA cheap goods and let themselves destroy their economy with debt.
    * Send the west lots of cheap drugs (Fentanyl is now less than $1 a hit in USA).

  So then what….? Russia responds? And if the F-16s fly from a NATO airfield (most of Ukraine is bombed or can’t handle F-16s) does that mean Russia bombs NATO airfields? And then what? NATO vs Russia kicks in…..

    There’s the saying that an Army marches on its stomach. That is really a metaphor for ALL supplies not just food.
    
    Killing one enemy soldier requires on average many thousands of rounds of small arms (eg. rifle) ammo, a few howitzer shells, bombs, rockets mines etc. It adds up to around a ton of ammo per kill.
    
    One of the rate limiting steps is the production of howitzer 155mm shells. Even though they have massively ramped up production the NATO countries only produce around 400,000 shells a year. That is about enough to supply Ukraine for 3 weeks if they want to match Russia’s 20,000 shells a day.
    
    Yup, all they have is supply for 3 weeks out of the year.

So I ask what has become of all the children these boomers had? They worked, they paid Taxes, but what have sequential Governments done with all of the money. Just squandered it? There must be billions/trillions.
As the boomer retire the funds should be there, as the boomers paid Tax too. Govts saying the kids can’t afford it. No! the Governments can’t afford it, but they divert the blame to the offspring instead of themselves.
Then we have the lazy Generations Y and Z. Emasculated pansies.

  When NZ Super started, there were roughly four taxpayers to every superannuitant. We’re now headed towards there being two, and the superannuitants they’re supporting are living longer and longer.
  
  Raising the age of eligibility would be the least painful way of starting to address this. Bill English made a very modest start towards this and got through the (actually fairly minor) howls of rage that responded, such that by the time Jacinda got into office, it wasn’t really much of an issue any more. She had no real political need to reverse the policy and she did incalculable long-term economic and political harm by doing so.

    National Superannuation, as it was called back in 1977 at the start, paid every married couple 80% of the average wage at age 60. That would be about $3000/fortnight today; more than double the current rate.

      In 2006 there were 4 earners for every pensioner. In the late 2040’s that looks like being 2. A quarter of the population will be on a UBI ….
      
      We can of course just stick our fingers in our ears and make lala noises. Use words like “affordable” and “entitlement”. Something like 25% of the over 65s are still in paid employment.
      
      Anyway – the current oldies will probably not have to deal with the consequences of this.

    Andersen’s apology rendered so long after the time her appalling allegations would have been clearly explained as being utterly outrageous to her, is meaningless. Patently, it was done solely for “political reasons.” She herself and the Labour leadership have acted woefully, disgracefully, scurrilously and now, pathetically. If they even begin to think this overblown attempt to cover “all the bases” will be seen for other than it is, they’re away with the fairies. She is a vicious, vindictive, bully and the comments she made about Mark last week, show that her attitude and opinion of others makes her unsuitable to be an MP. After she makes her apology this Wednesday morning on the Mike Hosking show, Mike should say thanks for that but we won’t be needing you anymore and will get someone else for the show who can act towards, speak to and debate with Mark in a respectful manner.   No, it was not a heartfelt apology – it was the normal apology saying “I’m sorry if you were offended by my remarks” apology. The Hutt bully needs to make a real apology on Hosking’s show on Wednesday.
  
  As for her remarks re gangs saying that the only way to hurt them was to hit them in the pocket – what can she point to in her time as Minister? The entire left cabal was soft as marshmallows on gangs.

  “I am sorry. I allowed myself to get caught up in the ideological belief that some people aren’t responsible for their own actions. I wrongly assumed that the warlords and terrorists that attack the people providing aid etc do so without any choice which is clearly wrong. I was wrong to assume any harm committed against those Terrorists and Warlords was the fault of Mr Mitchell and his employees instead of the fact that that harm was a direct result of their own choices to directly harm innocent people. We accept people that provide aid as inherently good people but that aid cannot be provided without people like Mr Mitchell and it is therefore wrong to condemn him for his protection.”

    I think if you stick religiously to 100 in the passing lanes and do your overtaking in the one lane each way sections you can avoid getting fines. 95% of the speed cameras I pass driving Auckland to Whangarei are in 2 lane sections of the road, very few in the single lane sections. Same with the patrol cars – follow along behind them in the passing lane then watch them do a u-turn to patrol back the other way.

    AT and NZTA have lowered all the open road speed limits aroudn here to 80k from 100. These are open country roads whcih are not difficult to drive. Having lived here for 50 years,, I can assure you there is no history of traffic accidents of any sort. There are now lots of cops and speed cameras, doing very well at enforcing the new revenue limits.

    Of course the main objective is to garner income (or meet quotas from the Cops perspective). If you spent any time driving the open roads you would notice that the placement of cameras is preventing drivers from passing slower vehicles in passing lanes. Where it is safe to do so notwithstanding that the inconsiderate fool you and the other 9 cars have been following through the hills has now sped up to 100.

Can we believe that the board of the Order of Saint John puts political correctness ahead of public safety? Today we learn that St. John of NZ – now renamed ‘Hato Hone’ by its ‘Knights of St John’ administrators, is having to cut back on its services (largely government funded anyway) because of financial difficulties. It is understood that many longtime annual donors have ceased their contributions because of the change to a Māori name – which St John officially refuses to alter.

Can we believe that this ancient ‘order’ was founded by Monks in Jerusalem in about 1080 to provide first aid, healthcare, and support – especially to many pilgrims- and is a movement established in about 40 countries worldwide. The teaching hospital in London founded in 1805 has had a 200 Year history of mutual cooperation with that of the St John hospital in Jerusalem.

We can see how intimately NZ Māori has had such an association with St John, that its name here has such justification to be now changed to ‘Hato Hone’ – with such tragic financial results !

I cannot provide a source of this breaking news. It came to me in an email from a friend and was apparently written by Dr Hilton Le Grice

      I personally don’t care if they have a Māori name or image on their ambulance, I will continue to donate because it’s irrelevant, the work they do is what matters. But sadly we have a small group in this country whose racism is rabid and the moment they see a Māori word or image they crap their pants. It’s sad that St John are having to take ambulances off the road because of a small group of racist would rather put lives at risk because they are scared of a Māori name. If people won’t donate because of that, they are sad pathetic people.

        Hi Ghost, I totally agree with you. I just don’t understand all this angst about having Māori names alongside English. I looked up the St John’s website. Other than the heading in dual languages everything else simply said St John’s even the phone number and it was New Zealand and New Zealanders in every sentence. Frankly bloggers get over it. As long as it has a English translation with the Māori what the f.. does it matter. Suggest you travel and see dual languages all over the place such as in Wales. OK pour your scorn on me with your down ticks. We have far more important issues.

        The renaming of it and change to Maori wording and symbols are another issue.
        
        From the link below, the new design doesn’t seem to include the Red Cross – the Amalfi Cross – on the vehicles.
        
        If this is so, is the omission because it clashes with the indigenous symbolism in the design.
        
        It would be interesting to know the comparative costs of the traditional St John design and the new design.

    I don’t know what the payment setup is like over NZ, but here on the Shore I pay $90 per year for St Johns to cover this household. Less than $2 a week.
    Without that it will cost you $98 each time you use them. As we are older it is more important. Makes sense, insurance is a necessary evil.

    Here we have a long established Order, named after a Saint, whose name was John.

I have never had my groceries delivered from Countdown, but surely when you sign up for the service there are some sort of disclaimers regarding delivery times and conditions ? I can’t imagine that Countdown would enter such an agreement without conditions.

  Just as a general principle, when you complete your order and make payment, you have entered into a contract for Countdown to supply the goods within the agreed timeframe.
  It is unacceptable for Countdown to instead supply the goods the next day due to order fulfilment issues as this can impact people who have to miss work to be at home to receive the delayed order.

This is why I am apprehensive about the Treaty movement and deeply suspicious of the motives of its leaders.

This is, I believe, a fantastic example of how the Treaty meaning is being twisted and contorted in modern times and used by some to increasingly impose their vision upon other New Zealanders of what New Zealand should be and how they need to act and behave.

The Treaty is an agreement between the Crown and Maori Iwi.

It is not and never has been some sort of guiding light for how New Zealanders live their private lives and it certainly is not some sort of basis for running private businesses.

I fear that unless some boundaries are drawn around what the Treaty is and isn’t, and what the principles are and aren’t, the we will have this never-ending creep in the responsibilities and obligations the Treaty imposes on New Zealanders in their private lives – way, way beyond its original intent.

I am now increasingly confident we are but a short step away from people demanding automatic Maori representation on the boards and management teams of private companies (as has already been done with our public institutions) – required in order that the companies can ‘fulfill their Treaty obligations’. Treaty obligations that in my view don’t and never did exist for private companies nor private individuals – they are a modern invention.

What next? Forced inspections of private homes to ensure the occupants are fulfilling their Treaty obligations and responsibilities?

One might laugh, but who would have thought a mere twenty or even ten years ago that the Treaty placed obligations and responsibilities on private companies as this esteemed gentleman believes? Obligations and responsibilities, no doubt, that can only be understood and delivered on with some help from suitably-qualified Maori ‘advisors’ charged out at $250 per hour plus GST and ultimately requiring Board seats and management team positions with salaries to match.

This is wrong. It is not justified by the Treaty articles in any way and provides clear evidence that the Treaty is being constantly reinvented to mean whatever some people want it to mean at any point in time – and especially where it helps transfer power, control and cash to Maori elites.

My god, we’re turning into an ethnostate – if we’re not in fact there already.

  The Treaty is actually between the Crown and over 500 Maori Chiefs representing *hapū*. In Maoridom, your Iwi is your broad-based tribal umbrella affiliation, but it is at hapū level where the real connectedness, decision making, and localised power structure resides. How and when did I learn this? I learnt this from a Maori elder as recently as last week. The illusion of Iwi-level ‘Maori unity’ is pushed by Maori elites controlling Treaty settlement money at said Iwi level and by the Maori king movement. Once you understand that the hapū (subtribe) is where the true affiliation of Maori lies, you understand why such a unity is akin to ‘herding cats’.

  In 1922, Sir Apirana Ngata was in no doubt that the chiefs had ceded sovereignty in 1840. He told his readers that if they didn’t like that reality, they should “blame your ancestors”. Here’s some relevant extracts from his explanation to others about the ToW:
  
  The Government placed in the hands of the Queen of England, the sovereignty and the authority to make laws. Some sections of the Maori people violated that authority. War arose from this and blood was spilled. The law came into operation and land was taken in payment. This it self is a Maori custom—revenge, plunder to avenge a wrong. It was their own chiefs who ceded that right to the Queen. The confiscations cannot therefore be objected to in the light of the Treaty.
  
  During the time when the Maori chiefs had authority and there was no authority of British law, the word of the chief was law to his tribe. It was he who declared war, and he who sued for peace. Here are some of the words of that period; “The fire burning yonder, go forth to put it out”. A great number of the people thus disappeared—loss of man, loss of land. The chief was separated from his daughter who was used as an offering to the invaders to bring about peace. It was the chiefs who bespoke the land and gave it away. They had the power even for life or death. These were the powers they surrendered to the Queen. This was the understanding of each tribe. The main purport was the transferring of the authority of the Maori chiefs for making laws for their respective tribes and sub-tribes under the Treaty of Waitangi to the Queen of England for ever. The embodiment today the Governor, his Ministers, the Members of the Lower House elected by the people and the Members of the House of Lords, appointed by the Governor, together they make the laws.

  William Colenso (1811 – 1899) was at the ToW signing. He was the only person in the tent who took notes of what was debated by Chiefs and others and wrote a full account of this and the signing. What is useful to read in his account is the objections from some Chiefs that signing the ToW, which was written in Maori, would mean they would be giving up their sovereignty. They didn’t like this. I’ve provided some extracts below which make this obvious.
  
  Irrespective of how anyone today interprets what was written, how the Chiefs understood it at the time is what matters. In the end they signed it knowing they were giving up their sovereignty. Not quite an equal partnership.
  
  EXTRACTS FROM COLENSO ACCOUNT
  
  Tareha, chief of the Ngatirehia Tribe, rose, and, with much of their usual national gesticulation, said, ” No Governor for me -for us Native men. We, we only are the chiefs, rulers. We will not be ruled over What! thou, a foreigner, up, and I down! Thou high, and I, Tareha, the great chief of the Ngapuhi tribes, low! No, no; never, never.
  
  As each chief affixed his name or sign to the treaty the Governor shook him by the hand, saying (in Maori), “He iwi tahi tatou” (“We are [now] one people”), at which the Natives were greatly pleased. All that were disposed having signed, the Natives gave three cheers for the Governor.
  
  After some little time Te Kemara came towards the table and affixed his sign to the parchment, stating that the Roman Catholic bishop (who had left the meeting before any of the chiefs had signed) had told him “not to write on the paper, for if he did he would be made a slave.”

    I’ve never heard a rebuttal of the notion that you can gain a great understanding of what the Treaty intended by reading the reasons some chiefs refused to sign i.e. that they knew well what they were signing up to.
    
    I wonder what line(s) such a rebuttal would take?

    Colenso’s undernstanding of Maori was insufficient for an accurate translation of the chiefs speeches at that time?
    Colenso accidentally mistranslated the chief’s words?
    Colenso deliberately mistranslated the chief’s words?
    
    When I first read about the nature of the objections of the chiefs who refused to sign, a few months ago, i thought to myself that Colenso’s recordings had an air of authenticity.
    
    If he was corrupt or on the take, wouldn’t he have been far more likely to record that everyone was happy and that there were no objections or only on minor matters?
    
    But did he do this? No, he did the opposite. He recorded the objections, and the reasons behind the objections – including that they are ceding authority to the British in return for protection and becoming British subjects etc etc.
    
    Colenso doing this lends authenticity to his record in my view. It sounds accurate and faithful to me.

The point with Colenso’s record is that the chiefs didn’t like the ToW and the missionaries whom they trusted said they would be turned into slaves by signing, essentially because they cede their sovereignty. But they still went ahead and signed irrespective of whether they were one of those that had concerns or not. Hence they knowingly ceded sovereignty.

  We concluded that at age 80, a 2% wealth tax would not be sufficient to cause a shift, even though it would mean a real reduction in the value of ones’ wealth.
  
  The equation might be different for younger people.
  
  To take $1 million (and whatever relevant multiple thereof) if it is invested in a typical balanced fund the gross return is 7%. Tax at the PIE rate means a net return of about 5%, so a 2% wealth tax means more like a 3% return. Probably around the level of inflation. So using any of the money to live on means wealth is being eroded.
  
  Farmers, and those with other inflexible assets, will be hard hit by a wealth tax.
  
  A higher wealth tax might change the decision about staying.

    A “wealth tax” has come to mean a tax based on the market value of assets owned by a taxpayer.
    
    It’s worth remembering this differs from capital gains tax, which is on increases in the value of assets, and usually on increases when those assets are sold.
    
    A capital gains tax has other effects, such as stopping diversion of capital away from business where tax cost is on revenue and into business based on asset sales, and which is mainly tax free.

    We certainly had a gift tax as Dad found out when he won the Golden Kiwi and gave most of the money away after he’d bought a new car and a couch long enough he could lie down and have a wee nap in the afternoons
    My sister had bought him the ticket for his birthday and didn’t know you needed to write ‘abc syn’ on the butt so the winnings could be divided up without paying gift tax
    It was the only ticket she ever bought

      NZ did have a death-duty or estate tax. It was hard on family farms because it gave the surviving family members little time to come up with the money due. This could cause the farm to be sold to pay the tax.
      
      From a Government point of view an estate or death duty tax is easy to administer and relatively cheap to calculate and collect.
      
      If the Government had given the family survivors longer to raise the cash, the tax could have been less brutal.
      
      Death duties ended in NZ on deaths from, and including, 17 December 1992.

    I suspect you are right that Oz is less likely to go with a wealth tax than NZ.
    
    I think one thing that might drive NZ to a wealth tax is that there is revenue options are running out and the sheep will need to be shorn closer to the skin.
    
    One thing seems certain is that Kiwis have a growing sense of entitlement and that needs to be paid for with other people’s money.

So collected 2 years’ pay for a review that accomplished less than nothing and H-washed Labour’s abysmal record.

    A colleague of mine applied for the original Project/ Construction Manager job there. 50 something, highly regarded, massively experienced including in highly sensitive environments.
    
    He was told that they wanted to go with someone who would “grow into the role”. I think they went with someone in their early 30s. Utterly bizarre – if there is ever a time and place for someone with experience it’s when you have to plan to fly in every bit of material and bolt on time, work with extreme seasons and in a location where environmental concerns are paramount. Robertson’s departure is a reminder of how much worse what seems like everything has become under his watch – monetary policy mess ($12 billion lost and inflation to boot) including pathetic RBNZ appointments, neutering the Productivity Commission, banning gas and oil exploration, making us more dependent on Australian coal, fiscal balance in “structural deficit”, spending up by about 6% of GDP since 2017, net core Crown debt up by about 22% of GDP, working age welfare dependency up alarmingly, school truancy and under-achievement, hospitals an organisational mess, nurses and others fleeing to Australia, GP shortages developing, tertiary vocational training a shambles, 6 years on RMA a wasted effort, Treasury looking anaemic. Perhaps $30 billion to buy overseas carbon credits to 2030, while major countries will not keep to Paris Agreement net zero targets. No material difference to climate change, so at a major cost of NZers material wellbeing. Add to that the destablising’ co-governance that increasingly really meant a co-sovereignty ‘partnership’. And this guy apparently wanted a wealth tax.

To what extent was he a restraining influence? I have no idea.

But he and Labour MPs will now jeer at this government for failing to fix these problems fast.

Chlorine $150, buffer $25, PH reduce $30, electricity for the pump, filter sand, test kit and hours spent vacuuming. And the 3 yearly safety inspection $160. Cambridge University climate scientist Mike Hulme says climate extremists’ (my description) models tend to:

Hulme says climatism has created a culture of radical environmental concern to the detriment of democratic debate and scientific inquiry.

I was at a function last night.
A number of OU Alumni were present as well as a former Vice Chancellor of another NZ University.
The subject of Robertsons appointment as Vice Chancellor of OU raised it’s ugly head.
Not only is Claire Curran on the council, i discovered that one Dr David Clark a former MP is Registrar of the University.
The place is full of ex-labour MPs.
It seems alot of alumni who would have been making donations to OU have decided not to do so.

I left National because of its climate change alarmist policies and voted Act.

David Seymour stated before the election that he would push for getting rid of the whole Climate Change Commission. I knew that Luxon would never agree to this and I suspect he did as well.

However, he could have pushed for Rod Carr’s replacement not to be another alarmist. It appears he has not and Carr’s replacement could even be James Shaw.

NZF appears not to support climate change alarmism. However, they are vague about policy.

I keep getting emails from Act and NZF saying all the great things they are doing and asking for donations.

However, when I email them for an assurance that they will strongly oppose another alarmist as Carr’s replacement I get no reply.

I think any donations I make will be to lobby groups like Maxim, Family First and Janet Dixon – a real estate agent.

Does anyone else think Carr’s replacement is very important?

    I liked their programme as it gave an insight into the Maori and PI’s way of treating death.
    
    Any Maori or PI’s words or phrases used had English sub titles and the programme was done v well.
    
    They and their team had a quirky SoH and Francis thought he was the Boss but his missus was actually!!!
    
    They went down in my estimation when they sent a letter offering their expertise for the funeral of QE11. To me that was rude.

    Yep, some Maori tribes had decent chunks of land stolen about 150 years ago. Most of their land they actually sold to British settlers or The Crown (the best estimate I’ve seen is 90% of the land was actually sold).
    
    The known stolen land has now all been settled via The Waitangi Tribunal. Most of the stolen land was taken by The Crown as a response to a bunch of radical Maori who tried to create a separatist movement in the Waikato around 1860.
    
    Some land is claimed to have been stolen, but after almost 50 years of trying, The Waitangi Tribuanal and The Crown haven’t been able to make a clear decision on this claim. So maybe it is, maybe it isn’t stolen?

Has anyone noticed the crazy going-ons at St Johns? I hear random use of the terrio version, Hato Hone in radio and TV ads and on some of the ambulances.
However, an advert this morning on the radio, begging for donations, only referred to St Johns, as St Johns? Why is that? They appear to be a bit half hearted about the use of the terrio name, hato hone. Is the use of terrio names optional, its all very confusing

  I have very mixed feelings about the St John Ambulance and their renaming. We have a family membership, which has repaid itself several times in the last year. A couple of Sundays ago, our eldest son suffered excruciating abdominal pains in the wee hours, and we had to call an ambulance. The attending staff were amazing — they are so well trained, and utterly professional. A&E at Christchurch Hospital was fortunately unusually quiet, and our son was admitted far faster than we expected. Again, the hospital staff were outstanding, and following a barrage of tests, whipped out his gall bladder the following day. I am full of admiration at the way in which staff at all levels do such an incredible job in the face of huge difficulties.
  
  But the name change by St John indicates that something is not well in the bureaucratic upper echelons. I can conceive of no reason to bow down to the encroaching darkness of wokeness in this country. I have made regular donations beyond the family membership in recent years, but am now questioning about whether to continue (still ambivalent). It would have been nice if the bureaucrats had thought to ask their supporters how they feel about it — it might have provided a stay to the apparent haemorraghing of income.

    I had a situation awhile ago where I had severe intestinal pain (must have been reading Che’s posts)
    They sent me an ambulance but unfortunately didnt have any pain relief on it.
    Aware of the queue at A and E they sent another to meet us half way where I changed over, got pain relief and then on to Hospital.

One of the girls from tennis just got back from a holiday in San Fran.
She was telling us that looting is sooo bad now, that if you want to go shopping at a lot of the more exclusive stores…..you need to first register at the entrance, then wait for a staff member to become available to escort you around the entire time you’re in there.

How long till we see something like that happening at Countdown etc?

Sad business when adults put a 15 year old child in an overpowered rally car and let him kill himself.

It reminds me of those parents that tried to get their 7 year old daughter into the record books by flying across USA. Result: expensive crater with three bodies – including the 7 year old.

This is just vicarious fame seeking by the parents.

FFS they are kids. Let them be kids. They have their whole adult life ahead of them to live out their OWN goals when they are capable of making reasonable decisions. They are not here to live out YOUR goals!

  Max Verstappen had an FIA Super License and was racing Formula 1 cars at age 17. He came up through the ranks of karting and then formula 3. I don’t think 15 is too young for a rally car driver if they have had appropriate training and preparation.
