Regarding the aid workers killed by the IDF last Monday the Jerusalem Post indicates it was a case of mistaken identity –
– The drone through its infra red lens could not see the aid worker stickers.
– A Hamas terrorist got on board one of the trucks prior to the engagement and fired his machine gun, a signal to other Hamas terrorists identifying his position.

It seems that after this incident and due to pressure from Biden the IDF has withdrawn from south Gaza.

I would say that it is very possible that Hamas aided and abetted the case of mistaken identity? They want innocent civilian casualties to pressure Israel and gain support for themselves.

Secondly the IDF has censured the officers in charge. Hamas by contrast celebrates the death of innocent civilians.

Thirdly I would hope that people would support Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East. However given the kids protesting climate change on Friday were lead by Palestinian activists I’m not holding out much hope. Sad 😔

    Furthermore there are two million Palestinians living in the West Bank who cannot vote, but 400,000 Israelis who can. Normally Israeli citizens living outside the country cannot vote.

  It seems to me that they’ve been caught one too many times doing the kind of thing they always do (including blaming the victims for their own deaths), so now they’re having to explain themselves and act as though this is an anomaly.
  
  Moreover, it’s unclear though how being “the only democracy* in the Middle East” counts as justification for anything the Israelis have been doing for the last 6 months.
  
  Does voting for leaders who then commit atrocities in any way alter the nature of those atrocities?

  In Canada a fellow ata protest can go all dressed up as a suicide bomber , and that’s OK . However an Iranian counter protester with a sign stating what all western countries hold to be true “Hamas is a terrorist organisation” gets arrested.
  
  As pointed out many times before here by others , we live under a system of anarcho tyranny .
  
  ‘We’ because much the same thing has happened here and in the UK.

  That was 3 civilian aid vehicles moving from one food warehouse to another food warehouse hit by 3 precision guided munitions.
  If those vehicles couldn’t be identified, then that is the IDF firing on vehicles they can’t identify.
  Have IDF officers been censured and if so to what degree? If a trooper clears his weapon in an unsafe manner and puts a hole through another trooper, he gets more than a censure, he is quickly court martialed and severely punished. The punishment is also made widely known as a warning to other troopers not to make the same mistake.
  Let us wait and see if these officers are quickly court martialed and their severe punishment made widely known.
  If your defence of these multiple criminal homicides is that Hamas does worse, then you are setting a damn low bar and letting your morality be dictated to you by terrorists.

  I really hate how daylight saving ends so late. Used to be 1st week March.
  It was so fab getting out of bed in daylight for a change.
  Why we can’t just have the clocks go forward in the afternoons is beyond me.

    If you think ours is late, in the UK it’s the end of October, which is our end of April, and in the US it’s the beginning of November, which is our early May.
    
    My sister lived in Glasgow for many years, which is fairly far north, and where by the end of October it’s already getting dark pretty early and then wham, daylight saving comes off.

      NZ gets about half an hour of daylight saving even on standard time. For Gisborne, only about 15 minutes. For Invercargill maybe 45 min. All from where we are in longitude.
      For UK they get basically none.

  Yes I have also been enjoying the light in the mornings these last two days. Waking up in the dark this early in autumn just seems so wrong. I too would argue we need to return to the pre-2008 approach whereby we put the clocks back in mid March and put them forward again in mid October.
  
  What annoyed me about the 2008 extension is that it was done for the wrong reasons. Some guy in Nelson piped up with a petition and at first, the Clark government would have nothing to do with it. But then one of her political advisers reminded her that 2008 was an election year and that her party was well behind National in the polls, and suggested that an extension to daylight saving might win her a few more votes. It didn’t work, of course.
  
  Don’t get me wrong – I like daylight saving in the summer months but all good things must come to an end. And that includes summer.

I started reading a book last night about a man who came to NZ under a family resttlement scheme, got into trouble, turned his life around.

What I found interesting was that he and his siblings were born in Pakistan to a couple who fled Afgnahistan and they lived in Pakistan for quite some time. His grandparents even lived there.

An uncle had come to NZ as a refugee in 1999, sought asylum and was granted residency. 2 years later under the family resettlement category, this man, his 4 siblings and parents all were granted visas to NZ.

I suppose the main point of this is how expansive the family resettlement category is – not just for immediate family. And living in Pakistan wouldn’t have been much of a hassle I wouldn’t have thought.

  To be fair, folks aren’t losing their minds over the eclipse, per se. It’s not the bloody Middle Ages.
  
  I guess when some localities are expecting influxes of upwards of a million eclipse watchers it might just cause a few problems. That said, modern emergency management bureaucracy does tend to be a little jumpy.

        Stayed in Liechtenstein when driving to Austria for a skiing holiday.
        
        Lichtenstein was (and I think still is) a high wage, high cost of living, low tax regime and a tax haven. Haven’t checked recently but it had low GST, low income tax etc. I think dedication tax is gift tax.
        
        It is also very, very pretty and has a weird Monarchy/Democracy mix with the monarch having real powers.

  J had the misfortune yesterday to read a LinkedIn post by an American who met Jacinda Ardern. Apparently Jacinda shared her life philosophy with the man which was to be humble and be optimistic. There were quite a number of comments underneath essentially of the view that she is truly a great human being. That ruined my Sunday for a few hours contemplating the wreckage left in her wake and it seems she isn’t one for reflective hindsight.

Yesterday,, “I’ve run out of work and we are getting concerned about our payments for vehicles taxes and our mortgages”.
This from a good mate who is a house builder that is extremely worried about his and his family’s future, the next 2 years are going to be brutal…

    If tradies don’t respond to requests for quotes there will be a reason. Smaller jobs are usually not worth it if it means going to site, talking to client, pricing and quoting, then hear nothing back. And can assume your quote is one of 2 or 3 and can be a race to the bottom pricewise.

        Family tradies are (too) busy, been 5 years since we advertised for new clients but no longer employ staff so now no need to stress about forward work or all that admin. We do hire subbies on a project or expertise basis, payment by invoice. EZ.

  Same around here. Lots of building companies out of work but then they still refuse to advertise and quote on small jobs like fences and repairs.
  
  Money has come too easy for many and they forgot to build sustainable repeat business based on quality and good service.
  
  Back to the good old days of providing service and ringing people back, except the new generation don’t seem to be interested in this. They will get the result they deserve.

    I think there are a lot of tradies who have had it easy over the last few years. Instead of realising these are fat years and salting it away they have increased their expenditure to match.
    
    When $90 to $100/hour is the base rate, then it is easy to pay the lease on a new top of the line Ford Ranger (~$1200pm or so) and fill it with new tools.
    
    Simultaneously they also took a few steps up the housing ladder because they could afford it.
    
    However if there is a downturn then they’re stuffed. They maybe need the $60/hr jobs, but they can’t make ends meet any more.
    
    A much better policy would have been to keep the old ute and stay in the more modest house and either use the extra money to pay down debt or save.
    
    If they’d done that they would be able to tighten their belts for a year or three and come out the other side just fine.

  I suspect the majority of the Hamas hostages are already dead explaining why Hamas demanded a complete cease fire, removal of IDF, return of large numbers of Palestinian prisoners etc.
  
  This guarantees no deal and they can claim Israel is negotiating in bad faith.

  The problem with many countries is that they had a right leaning government locking them down, and they are about to look to a bunch of Socialists as an alternative (see Australia and USA). Those that had Marxists in charge will return to leaning right and getting their economy back in order (NZ and hopefully Canada).

  Adrian Orr is a complete joke with what he (and Robertson) have done.
  
  I predict his ‘war on inflation’ is about to hit another major spanner – the price of Oil is shooting up (it’s now around US$90/barrel).
  
  Last year the price of oil dropped, but we still had inflation much higher than the RBNZ band of 1%-3%. So what happens when petrol & diesel prices at the pump go up?
  
  Is the ME war going to end tensions anytime soon? (No). So at best oil will hover around $90-$100/barrel. But if the war escalates then we will likely see the 1970’s oil price shock repeat itself. Important to also realise that the Iranians can dictate terms on the Strait of Hormuz, or at least severely interrupt shipping. If that happens then the siht will certainly hit the fan.
  
  Dropping the OCR in that environment would be nuts.

Who’d have thought? Trust in news media has fallen. The most trusted, the ODT, scores only 5/10. According to the academics on RNZ, it’s mainly due to us right-wingers who don’t understand what news is reliable and what is not because we are a bit dim. And of course there’s that dastardly social media that some of us actually have some faith in.
Just like teachers who blame the kids for their own failures, RNZ and the academics basically placed the blame on the general public.
Just one day of headlines, news stories and news items is enough to show exactly how partisan, superficial and selective our news media actually are.

I’m with Consumer NZ in being suspicious of the sought merger of the North Island and South Island Foodstuffs supermarket co-operatives.

It’s good to have a retailer locally attuned in the South Island.

Doubtless some of the gains sought will come from more concentrated wholesaling – and that will mean more concentration in Auckland.

With the Southern Alps fault overdue for a mammoth quake, the south needs as much food supply stored locally as possible.

Then there are the thieving raiders wheeling goods out of Auckland’s supermarkets.

Should Auckland crime costs be shared by southerners?

It’s a crazy mixed up world we live in isn’t it?

Thinking to myself earlier, if I posted the gory details of what my partner actually SAID when he described that filthy 15 year old animal who raped and degraded those three poor underage girls, (and got nothing but a fine he’ll never pay)…. if we lived in Scotland, it would be my partner who would be arrested for “hate speesh” and probably jailed for 5 years.

    I do not recall how old I was exactly but primary school age. One of my local playmates, a sad little girl, had a mother who cried a lot and we littl’uns did not know why but knew enough to be scared of her husband / our playmate’s father. He was a hitter of both wife and child.
    
    Some time later a group of the local husbands and fathers got together and it seems they discussed with the wife-and-child-beater, some reasons to change his behaviour. (Much, much later I found out he’d been in hospital for 4 months afterwards). Regardless, the situation improved.
    
    As an adult I don’t see that as routine and brutal as much as I see it as earned and effective.

2 points.

Trust in RNZ fell 7.5 per cent.

In June last year, it was revealed an RNZ sub-editor had added pro-Kremlin content to articles about the Ukraine-Russia war.

It could have been said that the subbie had added balance to a biased (pro Ukrainina) Report.???

That may have added to us peasant readers trust in RNZ??? ie a bit of balance.

The Federation of Islamic Associations of NZ is pushing Luxon on the issue and want Faith recognised as a “protected characteristic” under law. You need to keep Luxon in check on this one.

Abdur Razzaq is disappointed the Govt dropped the hate speech law and is now pushing for “hate crimes” to be added to the statute books. He gives an example of someone telling a Muslim to go home – as a hate “crime”.

That’s a problem right there, not only is “hate” subjective, Razzaq, who is on the Royal Commission set up for the Mosque attack already is conflating crime with speech.

We already have adequate laws for those human characteristics that are immutable such as sex, age, race and disability.

Religion is a subset of belief. You must include belief if you’re going to include religion as there are secular beliefs. However, the many different beliefs are not an immutable human characteristic. For example anyone can convert to a religion or a belief system.

Who then decides which beliefs, secular and religious, are valid ones for which you can hate. Does the Ministry of Hate maintain a list? You can’t actually leave out any belief as it’s not up to a government to determine that one belief system is more important or more valid than another.

What if you utter an innocuous statement and the person standing next to you hears it and decides it’s very hateful to their obscure belief or religion.

And what about the brutally hateful statements against women and homosexuals in any of the religious texts Torah, Quran and Bible which any religious leader might read our when in mosque or church or are in public libraries with no censorship.

      Now change Muslims in that sentence to:
      1. Trans activists
      2. Māori activists
      3. Climate change activists
      
      and the sentiment remains pretty much the same.
      
      Interestingly, added together these groups are pretty much the Green Party, so no surprises that Chloe wants hate speech laws. However, shouting a chant that is widely understood to proclaim the destruction of Israel isn’t hate speech. Because hate speech is what Chloe defines it to be or what is determined by Jacinda “you know it when you see it.” Thank goodness they aren’t in power now!
      
      Why do we allow the UN to push refugees from the above groups (excluding Māori) into our country? Surely there are loads of more culturally and ideologically aligned people who could be settled here. Where else in the world has it created a peaceful harmonious society through mixing radically divergent groups together?

The latest Listener has a photo of the Notre Dame in flames, 5 years ago. Now its new spire has been lifted into place and it is due to re-open in December, though there will be ongoing renovations and repairs.

5 years compared with Christchurch Cathedral. Just saying.

  Oh sure, nobody doubts that Catholics, Gypsies, Communists and Jews etc. were put in camps, but then again, everyone was doing the concentration camp thing back then: the pioneering efforts of the Soviets for many years before hand (where frequently the Gulags were managed by Jews, ironically), the Americans (i.e. internment camps for Japanese Americans), and then after the war, the Allies had concentration camps for Germans, while the Soviets did the same in the territories they obtained during the war and as part of the “carving up of Europe” among the victorious allies.
  
  History is, in large part, a compendium of domination and oppression, and nobody is uniquely guilty or uniquely victimised.

“The onset of cardiac complications varied among participants, with 14.55% experiencing symptoms within one month of vaccination and others reporting issues up to 12 months or longer.

Am I becoming cautious in that part of the election result was that those now in power were going to moderate the Maori diaspora, who have over the 6 Ardern years come to suggest, and for us to see, that we are to change everything to Maori particularly the naming without authority of the Departments.
As a small department St John Ambulance have lost considerable charity, by doing so.
I believe that three departments have partly done so, and the we are hearing that the others will carry on doing whatever they want.
The Public Service attitude is now so anti Government that there is little chance of a second term, as everything they formulate will be ignored particularly in respect of anything Maori, as they know this will piss off the Government, and get the voting public back onside against such.
So in all fairness it is not the Maori who appear to have won the Second Battle of Waitangi, but many of the white liberals, believed to be mainly older Public Service women, who will continue their interpretation of why Maori shall continue to carry the day which they are doing now.

Australia is getting into a lather over the shutdown of the 3G cellphone network, which the Australian Broadcasting Corporation means more than a millioin phones will be blocked from Australia’s triple-zero emergency calling.

The ABC says More than a million mobile phones could be cut off from calling triple-0 within months.

In NZ, One NZ (formerlyl Vodafone), Spark, and 2degreees say they will shut down its 3G service this year.

In NZ, 3G phones include a host of “burners” – low cost text and talk only phones.

In Australia, Telstra will switch off its 3G network on June 30 and Optus is expected to switch off the network in September.

Australia’s Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said she was advised in March that approximately 740,000 Australians fell into that category. However, just one month later, that figure had been dramatically revised up to more than a million.

  These networks will be shut down from time to time as no longer profitable to maintain them. It happened before with “2G” and the CDMA network that telecom used to run. A 4G feature phone can be purchased for $50 in NZ. So not the end of the world.
