Does anyone know what the Suicide Prevention Office actually does? The old media blurb about new boss is opaque apart from the fact he is a Maori.

When one looks at the “achievements” listed, it seems there is a lot of makeworks for other bureaucracies, social media ads of dubious effectiveness and patting themselves on the back. They don’t seem to put boots on the ground. The data shows the rate is going down, but the trend seems to have started before the office. 1996-2016 had a big reduction in male suicide, mainly in rural areas. The spike up is from youth, no doubt depressed by the climate doomsters and the isolation caused by lockdowns.
It seems that yet again the office was identified as a high visibility “victim” of the expenditure cuts (think Yes Minister scripts) and the biased no-nothing media used it as another stick to beat the government. If it is so important, why didn’t the Health Department managers take a pay cut to save it and other offices? Many private sector firms go down to 4 day week and cut in pay when times get hard. Do government departments do the same?

  I don’t think that it is a separate entity. It is just a ‘sign on a door’ at the Ministry of Health.

        We have a lost soul who begs outside our local dairy.
        
        Every now again he just randomly nuts off, usually when he’s pissed. Not long back he wasn’t allowing people to pass as he claimed “This is a Maori footpath….”
        
        We all just laughed him.
        
        The local cops maintain he killed a cop in his youth – but I’ve never learned his name so I’ve found it difficult to check this out. His looks and age just don’t line up with known cop killings that I can determine.

    More to my point yesterday that ALL organisations have room to cut 6.5% fat. The ministry of health, one might argue should be exempt from cutting spending, could easily dump this entire office and chop the $100m/yr Maori medicine sham and easily free up some cash.

    With that blurb, it suggests that suicide is a once again is a Maori only problem in NZ. It isn’t, it is a fact affecting all ethnicities in NZ, rich & poor.
    
    Would surprise people that one of the highest levels of suicide is amongst the teenage children of well off families in Rodney? How does shining a Maori light solve that?

  Just open an office, dump money into it and now you can say “we’re spending $x million a year on suicide prevention”. Box ticked. Move on.

  My forecast, for what its worth, is that ORR will not drop rates until ~6ths after the US starts dropping rates.
  
  The NZ Paso is almost worthless as it is and the easiest way to strengthen the currency is to offer higher interest rates then the US and other countries. ORR is desperately hoping the US starts dropping rates so that there is a bigger gap between the US and NZ rate. Stronger interest rates equals a drop in imported inflation (import costs down).
  
  So bad news for all those hoping rates will drop.

We’re already seeing the public sector shrink, tax cuts dialled in, school attendance, curriculum, and mobile phone policies underway, improved policing, and building cost reduction plans being communicated to the market.

The NZ public are waking up to the despicable nz media so it won’t be long before more dishonest reporters lose their jobs.

The media are now even whining to Luxon about the publics low confidence levels in the media.

Luxon rightfully replies it is the media’s responsibility to restore their reputation, not his.

Describing TVNZ axing some TV shows as “very upsetting” just exposes her to calls to ‘do something’. She then doubled down by telling us all that “help is on the way”. 🙄

There are very many “upsetting” events and circumstances in New Zealand. A TV company axing some shows is not one of them.

Incredibly, Melissa Lee, in March, accused the previous Government of not doing enough to “protect the media”.

  There should be no help for TVNZ. They had the opportunity to help themselves. The news merger suggested by TV3 was a good solution to reducing the costs of procuring news. A shared journalist pool would have help TV3 keep its news service and reduce costs for TVNZ. Instead TVNZ decided to let NewsHub fail and then start cutting its own services.
  
  I know there is hate for NewsHub but with the solution we wouldn’t be looking at govt intervention to save TVNZ.

    Of course RoboRob, the scenario that you describe could well lead to Maori TV creating a vehicle to fill the news void. That, along with a downward spiral in TVNZ news capability could create an outcome in which all your news comes via a lens that is certainly much different from the easily identified lefty viewpoint that currently skews the information flow.
    No easy answer other than an active cleanout and rebuild which would cost a king’s ransom, but even in your idle moments you could see that it would be politically unacceptable given the pressure on Government spending.

  I would say that TV3 News potentially going out of existence (and taking Skyopen News with it) is not ideal because it leaves that particular field dominated by TV1, who whether you like them or not still attract a substantial viewership, particularly among the older demographic who tend towards the more conservative side

  I previously posted about Lee’s recent interview with Sean Plunket. She did indeed sound all over the place.
  
  She was of the opinion that the media playing field is not level, and in favour of online sources of news. She appeared to believe TVNZ/RNZ were somehow hampered but she wouldn’t say exactly what she meant.
  
  It was all quite disturbing.
  
  I suspect we might see specific public funding for commercial-free news provision by TVNZ/RNZ. But I wouldn’t put it past them to go for a completely commercial-free TVNZ.
  
  This wouldn’t solve one damn problem which is that woke, monolithic news is not as viable as it used to be. All funding it will do is to cement in the very problem that has led to its demise.

I would add it’s easy to fool the media who want to be fooled and are blatantly biased in their coverage of Israel and Gaza. The Israel’s deliberately targeted a hospital, the Israelis have killed 30,000 innocent civilians, the lies and propoganda are swallowed up by the media.

The interrogation of Tariq shed light on the manipulation of media narratives by terrorist groups, with a focus on fabricating false stories to deceive both Arabic and international media outlets.

The effect is felt even as far away as the Wairarapa. Yesterday I drove past a “Gaza needs to live” protest in Carterton, of all places!

Boarding houses in the news quite a bit atm. Not in a good way. Parnell fire and antisocial behaviour, Tauranga big fine for landlord, Loafer’s Lodge arson and deaths. The Tauranga case in the Tenancy Tribunal referred to occupants as vulnerable, and that is probably right for some esp if used for transitional / supported / bail address housing.

Anecdotally, Loafer’s Lodge fire seems to have triggered councils to keep a closer eye. For example, our small apartment block has just had its first council safety systems audit ever, an audit that of course owners had to pay for.

Thing is, if running a boarding house is too hard and owners close and sell, where will these occupants go? The huge social housing waiting list is nearly half single people and assume for those in emergency motels etc the proportion Is similar. The Housing Minister has set a target to reduce emergency housing by 75%.

Surely the government could not be considering running boarding houses. But is building thousands of one beddie social housing for the waiting list being considered?

Boarding houses have been around for decades, especially for single tenants, mostly men. Few were on the social housing waiting list before 2018. What changed? Suggestions – come one, come all for cheap as chips housing; here’s a nice cheap motel unit for you while you look for your own accommodation; many new rules around rentals that led to cost increases and also serious risk assessment by landlords. And citizens don’t worry about the astronomical cost you and your offspring will be paying for decades.

The new government is looking at motel occupancy and some of the rental rules. It won’t be anywhere near enough. Sorry, taxpayers.

  Wind is unreliable and solar panels require rare materials that are mined by children in Africa.
  
  Solar panels are primarily made from silicon, and China is by far the worlds largest producer of silicon. Silicon is everywhere, they don’t need to go to fucking Africa to get it, and it’s not being mined by children. China are also by far the world’s largest producers of gallium, tellurium, cadmium, selenium and indium used in some panel types – that’s why they’re mostly made in China, they produce all the raw materials and have low manufacturing costs

    HC – It is Cobalt that is mined in the DRC, not the other metals you mention. China has very little cobalt but has taken control of the cobalt mined by children in the DRC. It is used for batteries not windmills/solar panels.

  This sounded interesting, so I took a look at it. Just a once over lightly, so I might have this a little ropey, but what I found was:
  
  * The US national hydropower organisation is on the Internet at http://www.hydro.org
  * Seems like they want a new law passed, the “Hydropower Clean Energy Future Act”, which will streamline how hydro dams are licensed.
  * They also want another law that gives them a tax credit for upgrading dams (the “Maintaining and Enhancing Hydroelectricity and River Restoration Act of 2023”)
  * As far as I can see both laws have been introduced to Congress, but not considered or passed.
  * Republicans control Congress, not Biden. He has no say over whether or when these laws might pass.

    If you take a trailer it’s weighed when you go in and out and you pay according to the difference except you can’t get a second opinion if the initial weight is way over the odds
    I read about a guy who was told he had to pay a ridiculous amount because they said he had deposited xkg, which he knew was twice as much as his trailer could handle so he argued the toss and they reassessed his bill

      I’ve used that station a lot, and actually had a great experience:
      One time I had a load of wet clay to dump. I didn’t have access to any free fill sites, so my only option was to take it to the dump. I knew it would be costly, but I factored it into the price of my project so I was prepared.
      Do you know how long it takes for one unfit bloke to unload a seriously overloaded trailer of wet clay?
      Well, when I finally went through the exit I was expecting to get stung for the full weight, but instead she looked at me, and charged me the standard low trailer rate. I said “Oh, only $25??”
      She looked at me, smiled, and said “Honey, you were in there an awful long time unloading”
      I didn’t ague with her, just thanked her profusely.

There is dumped crap laying around everywhere in many suburbs. I’ve even seen large asbestos pipes dumped in the night outside people’s houses on half-yearly inorganic waste collection days.   Rusty, my youngest daughter started high school this year. Private schools are beyond my very modest means, so on through the state system she went. Now she’s a bright kid, and very hard working. But between the pathetic syllabus, the haphazard timetable, the dire lack of structure, and the frighteningly lazy teachers, she’s bored out of her mind less than one term in. She’s not even slightly challenged. I’m quite concerned, and at a loss. As it stands she might as well bunk. She’d learn more at home with her books and crafts than the crap they do at school all day.

  So how do you combat such batshit crazy evilness? Where the more you kill them the worse the problem spreads (ie more Muslims are converted to be twisted religious nutjobs).
  
  I don’t think anyone has a realistic solution to that. I haven’t read one yet. Mass killing, and even “nuke the lot of them” doesn’t make the problem go away – it arguably makes the problem worse. There will always be Muslims, radicalising more of them by killing innocent civilians (and some Muslims are obviously innocent civilians), simply will not work.

  I’m not sure there has been a price to pay for Hamas itself. I have heard the leaders and their families don’t live in Gaza. They don’t have to run for re-election or face a free press so there is no pressure on them to end it. It doesn’t seem like the deaths or other suffering of lots of their own people is negative for them.

  Read this somewhere last year .. Netanyahu was getting chummy with Arab states. Hamas didn’t like this so did what they did knowing full well what Israel’s reaction would be, which in turn would garner them Arab states support and Arab states would stop getting chummy with Netanyahu.
  
  The other story I read was some months before it all started high-level russian people met with Iran leader and convinced them to whisper in Hamas ear getting them paranoid about chumminess mentioned earlier. The benefit for Russia was it took focus off their naughty behaviour in Ukraine.

  That’s a very well written article.
  
  Many teachers (including the frequent contributor Alwyn) fail to understand the importance of rote number cranking and problem solving as the basis to maths.
  
  Many think that kids should be given calculators to do the easy stuff so that they can focus on “higher maths”. Those that do this fail to understand that do do higher maths requires learning how to crank the handle by doing a lot of simple maths.
  
  As I understand it, kids in Asian schools do not use calculators until they are 15 or so. They are required to do a lot of mental arithmetic which helps to build a “feel” for numbers.
  
  I did well at school maths. Very well. If I got less than 95% in a test I would have been suicidal. Seriously. I did an average of 1.5 hours of maths homework a day. Just maths.
  
  The idea of group problem solving for maths is completely daft. It is an individual pursuit at this level. Thinking that groups can solve a problem is broken. What you will always end up with is the same one or two people solving the problem and the others just getting a free ride.
  
  Perhaps that group approach works for history and drama etc, but it does not work for maths.

    OTOH – why teach the technique for “long division” when noone is going to use it in real life – when was the last time you (manually) divided a six digit number by a 3-digit one.
    
    When I was mentoring yr 8 kids I found that the current technique is totally different to what I learned umpty years ago. I didn’t really follow it. Not that I can recall the last time I did a “live” (ie real life) long division.
    
    Anyway ditto for long multiplication. Waste of time IMO.
    
    In pre-calulator days “real” long div/mult problems were done with log tables or a slide rule. I don’t think any of that is taught now.
    
    When I went to high school we were also taught how to extract a square root – looks a bit like long division but worse …. more time wasted as there were tables for this too.
    
    FWIW I am good with mult tables – you can easily do a very approximate solution to a div/mnt problem to make sure you have the decimal in the right place.

      I do calcs manually all the time division, multiplication etc .. it’s easier and quicker to just do it with pencil and you have a written record if you need to repeat or go back and check your calcs .. this is for building a house as you go.

    To bet proficient at anything requires a lot of effort.
    
    One of my sons was a hockey goal keeper. He did around 4 hours of practice a week, as well as 3 games.
    Every week. Some of that was with Olympic-level coaches, but quality does not replace quantity.
    
    If you want to be good at something there is no short cut.

  I’m doing a graduate course in education at the moment. Not only is the emphasis on student-led learning, it is framed in terms of colonialism. Bad white teachers use the empty vessel method of forcing knowledge into the brain, while nice ‘traditional’ cultures learn at their own pace in a supportive learning environment that is better suited to children. It was straight out critical education and race theory, and it is complete nonsense. We also have to sit through a powhiri prayer at the start of each lesson. I turn up late so I don’t have to sit though tribal incantations in a language I don’t understand.
  
  I have no doubt young teachers are being brainwashed with this nonsense but they don’t have the experience or knowledge of history that I have to be able to challenge it.

        I think you miss the point that Trump has been making, which is, without US funding, military equipment and war intelligence systems, the war stops. That doesn’t mean Russia packs up and goes home, it just means the killing stops and Russia gets what they wanted back in Feb 2022.
        
        Zelensky now has nothing to do with any surrender agreement with Putin – things are way past the point where Putin would trust Zelensky. Rember it was Zelensky that ripped up the peace negotiation back in April 2022 (because clown man Borris Johnson promised him stuff that the West could never deliver).
        
        Putin now won’t ‘negotiate’ with anyone from the West. Why would he? Macron is a complete nut. The Germans are in a political mess. Sunak..??? (really!!). Biden can’t run his own bath…. There is no one in the West capable of negotiating with Putin – that is the reality.
        
        People can whinge and complain that “we shouldn’t give in to Putin” – but that doesn’t change the only realistic outcome – Ukraine has lost big time and has no way of turning around this shambles. The sooner they admit this and surrender the less lives will be lost.

        No, I get what Trump is hinting it.
        
        But while the US is a big contributor of materiel to Ukraine, it’s not the only one. Europe is providing at least as much, and Ukraine is ramping up its own domestic production. So I just don’t believe the US can strong-arm Ukraine into a negotiation or a deal that they don’t want. (And let’s be honest … Trump’s idea of a deal will be very Russia-friendly … he’s not going to insist on a Russian withdrawal is he).
        
        And I suspect Ukraine may prefer to die on their feet rather than live on their knees.
        
        And it’s not actually clear to me that Russia is “winning” – if they are it’s a Pyrrhic victory.
        
        So Trump’s “I can end this in 24 hours” is either delusional, or a lie, or flat-out wrong. But plenty seem undiscerning enough to believe him.

        As a simple example of why Ukraine may not submit to pressure from Trump for a surrender …
        
        In the last 24 hours:
        * Ukraine has destroyed over 20 Russian tanks, 30 artillery guns, 45 APC, 2 anti-aircraft systems and something like 800 Russian soldiers … Russia is losing equipment faster than it can replace it
        * Germany has committed to provide an extra 20 APCs to Ukraine (Marder APCs, so quite a bit superior to Russia’s BMP-1/2/3 family)
        * The US has redirected to Ukraine over 5,000 AK-47s, machine guns, sniper rifles, RPG-7s and over 500,000 7.62mm rounds that they captured from an Iranian shipment destined for the Houthis.
        
        Yes, Ukraine is hurting. But it doesn’t seem that they’re so far out of the fight that they have to sue for peace. It’s clear Trump would f#!k with them more than the GOP Congress already is … but not clear that that’s such a game changer that they have to surrender.

      Putin has no interest in stopping warring. He needs an external boogieman to excuse his dictatorial ways and allow him to squeeze dissent in the crumbling Russian empire. If he takes Ukraine he’ll just conscript the conquered Ukrainians and continue to build up his military and start on the next conquest, but that much closer to Europe (and more able to threaten them)
      
      West can stop him now with mostly surplus weapons and using ukrainian soldiers, or wait and fight a bigger, stronger and more emboldened Russia later with their own solidiers. Either way the nuclear threat will remain.
      
      As for the bollocks about Nazis in Ukraine; it was clearly only ever a convenient and largely invented propaganda excuse for Russian invasion, along with a lot of false flag work the Russians did to manufacture the conflict they felt they needed to give justification for their invasion, but invasion and restoration of Soviet empire was always Putin’s plan, ‘denazification’ just a pretext.
      
      the Azov brigade which employed some Nazi iconography was a minor fringe right wing group from the ethnically more-Russian east of Ukraine (Karkiv). There is as much or more use of Nazi iconography amongst Russian brigades and conscripts that the Russian military doesn’t seem to care about. Ukraine was after all part of the soviet union for 75 years where all this nazi-hard man bullshit was part of their culture (just as it was for skinheads in west). There’s lot of strongly racist ethnic division in Russia between ethnically European west and Asian east.

It is starting to look like another “crying wolf” episode on the West Coast over a few heavy showers. Days of vivid and frightening warnings and threats of “rivers” of rain from the climate change activists and all there is so far is three power poles down and a couple of slips.

People will get sick of this drivel and when the big one hits many will be unprepared. Some of these extremists need locking up.

Winston Peters seems to have taken up an Ardern crusade: fighting sea rise.

Ardern, in 1921, with other leaders at the Pacific Islands Forum, issued a “Declaration on Preserving Maritime Zones in the Face of Climate Change-Related Sea-Level Rise”.

This is despite scientists finding that hundreds of Pacific Islands are growing in size (second link below).

Deputy Prime Minister Peters, reporting from New York on talks with UN Secretary-General Guterres, says at the Government web site: “New Zealand is honoured to be playing a leadership role in the United Nations in preparing a High Level Meeting on sea level rise in September.”

(Not sure “high level meeting” got capital letters. Is this a Freudian slip about fear of super-high tides?)

Indonesians, like Australians, are rejecting boat-people refugees. This time it’s Rohingya sailing from Bangladesh, where they were driven by persecution in Myanmar.

The Indonesian Navy has begun patrolling to stop refugees from landing.

Many Indonesias in West Aceh, Sumatra, are increasingly hostile to Rohingya, who arrive in flimsy boats arrive after weeks at sea.

You have to wonder how long before boat-people begin sailing for NZ in numbers.

Meanwhile Rohingya still in Burma/Myanmar, after being murdered or driven out to Bangladesh in persecution led by the Myanamar Army, are now being conscripted into that army, which is engaged in civil war.

China is trying to negotiate an agreement for Myanmar to take back in the Rohingya it drove out.
