Interesting that the OJ coverage makes no suggestion of the possibility of him suffering from football-induced brain injury. He certainly made some odd decisions later in life, at least one of them rage-fuelled.

Labour was quick off the mark to attack Penny Simmonds when she pulled the plug on spending by the Ministry for Disabled People.

Perhaps this was to divert our attention away from the fact that this new Ministry with 350 staff must have been so badly set up by Labour that it needed to spend up large on consultants and contractors.

      Many Departments and Councils do this to keep notified staff numbers down, so their former staff who took redundancy, can get business from them.

  That ministry also never had funding to tie them over till June 30, they had no checks and balances, and the staff were trained to mislead an incoming government.
  I watched Q time the last few times, they try too attack Simmonds , but she simply bats them off with facts, they keep trying to ask dates, and she simply refers them to the ministries public statements that the minister was not notified properly, isn’t it strange, they are attacking Doocey on mental health, and it appears he had been mislead by the ministry as well. Both ministry’s were started by the hopeless Lsbour government

      I’m going to defend contractors a bit here, and yes I am one.
      
      I’m an IT contractor. I’ve been working in this government department for about 3 years. 75% of the IT staff here are contractors. 100% of the test resources are essentially contractors as they are supplied at that sort of rate by a third party.
      
      “Get rid of the contractors” and there would be no staff to deliver IT support.
      
      Why am I a contractor? Only partly the money. I don’t get paid on public holidays, sick days, or any leave I take, including the mandatory 2 weeks over Christmas. I can lose my job on 2 weeks notice. Take that tenants!
      
      Mostly, after 30+ years as a salaried employee, it’s to avoid the HR bullshit.
      
      This department is likely to tell most of the contractors (except the ones they really really can’t afford to lose) that they need to convert to perm. Public service rates for it workers are not to market, and in this department that’s constrained further by the union negotiating pay scale for everyone.
      
      In this market here what’s going to happen:
      1. Some will go perm, and stay longer term
      2. Some will go perm but immediately approach hiring firms, and the moment a better paid opportunity comes along, leave
      3. Some will leave immediately.
      
      The effect of 2 and 3 will be a massive drop in IP, as some of us here have been in the job for a substantial time. The hiring process to replace each one will take 3 months. That’s how long the last one took anyway. There’s been about a 50% hit/ miss radio with hires while I’ve been here.
      
      On the other side, there are 4 layers of management between me and the CIO, and another two from the CIO to the CEO. To my mind that is an unnecessarily large management layer.
      
      Get rid of the contractors? Sure, if they’re not delivering for the front line. I reckon you should start with not hiring Deloitte, PWC, McKinsey and any communication consultants, social media consultants and the like. Then look at you core purpose, and what skills you need for that. Then you can look at your perm vs contractor mix.
      
      Right now it’s burn every contractor and offer voluntary redundancy because that management layer doesn’t want to look at their purpose

    And as I’ve said before, all the other little ministries for special needs groups such as women, maori, pacific island, ethnicities, aged, youth. Better to combine them all into one Ministry For Equality or as someone pointed out earlier just beef up the Human Rights Commission. I’m surprised we don’t yet have one for my lot LGB .. and then also for the lot in rest of that alphabet soup that have taken over our treehouse.

      Why should there be a ministry for equality? Are there still any laws which allow discrimination in NZ? Other than the Maori wonderfulness of course, but that’s another story and no ministry for equality or any other ministry is going to change it.

Why is the Government allowing Willie Jackson to dominate the news about the woes of the media?

In a reminder of the horror show of the last government, Willie Jackson asks “Why can’t they mediate some sort of business deal?” to which the response should be “That is not the role of government, now STFU 🤬.”

Melissa Lee totally lost the plot yesterday when she insisted to Mike Hosking that Facebook and Google could be made to pay for news content in New Zealand. Later in the day Heather du Plessis-Allan ended up telling her that she was acting “weird and shady”. 😳 Ouch.

Then we had this exchange in an interview with Lisa Owen.

““How? How though minister? When you say you are providing support for modernisation and innovation, how are you doing that?” asked Owen, with the same tone you might use on a disobedient child.

“That’s part of the cabinet paper and I’m not prepared to talk about that…”

“So your ideas are secret, but you have got ideas?”

“Definitely.” 😳😳🤡

  We all know that much of the media was
  corrupted by the last Government. Melissa knows this and the media knows this. However the media will not admit this fact and will call Melissa a conspiracy theorist if the issue is raised. She probably has no interest in helping the media but is called anti democratic for not helping. She is in a no win situation.

    The future direction of media and its form, should be driven by the ‘experts’ who should, presumably, already be employed by TV and Radio and ensuring they are on the right path.

  Seems a case for Prime Ministerial support, similar to the teachers’ payroll issues in 2009 or so when the PM had to step in and put Stephen Joyce on the job as the issue had become beyond the capabilities of the Education Minister and CEO.
  The problem with current media issues is that journos who are central to the issues have the biggest megaphone.

  HDA is the shady one, she hates Luxon, she is becoming as bad as Tova and Jessica. Media has stated handouts will not save us, same with the face for radio yesterday, snd company heads also, what more is the minister too do, paying for FB adverts would be a revenue stream, and how they get around blotting media pages with these unwanted adverts is beyond me.

    Red Radio is no judge of Melissa Lee. Of course this Left-wing mob is after her scalp.
    
    Radio NZ was at the core of Wily-Willie Jackson’s media-empire building under Labour. He forged it into an alliance with the 20 or so State-subsidised tribal radio stations, and Radio NZ was a leader, if not the leader, of the Maorification of the English-language media.
    
    Radio NZ and TVNZ are State-owned media that, by their bias, have rejected the decision of voters at the General Election. They are giving defeated politicians like Wily-Willie and the Greens an undemocratic share of coverage.
    
    Melissa Lee has it tough as the target of the last Left holdouts like Radio NZ.
    
    Doubtless, she will turn her attention to them next, and soon. First the subsidies, then the fully owned.
    
    TV news carries scenes of people understandably distressed by loss of jobs. Melissa Lee’s right to act carefully, slow as she may seem to many of us.

  Mess is right. Lee has made a meal of this. Since her corporate welfare bailout plans must be discussed by cabinet before she can openly talk about them, she’s done the stupid thing and made intimations that have only served to provoke some well-deserved interrogation.
  
  National are showing themselves to be pretty weak in many areas around the culture wars, of which bailouts to woke media organisations are certainly an example. They don’t want to go anywhere near anything remotely controversial and it’s only NZF and ACT that seem to have any guts.
  
  That said, even ACT, along with National, have a real problem taking any action over banning the use of puberty blockers on children, which is rampant in this country, or sex and gender activism in schools. ACT championed and drove the Conversion Practises law which criminalises even parents from talking children off the cliff when it comes to undergoing life-changing chemical or surgical gender reassignments.
  
  So when Lee eventually starts rolling out her plans for bailing out woke media companies who can’t keep their houses in order, I won’t be in the least surprised.

    National must be pretty stupid if they are considering a bailout for Newshub (Warner Bros). The optics of slashing wastage in the public sector only to spend it on multinational corporate welfare are terrible. That, plus the fact that outside the Wellington beltway nobody watches them, nobody trusts them and nobody cares that they have to find another career because time has caught up with broadcast news.

      It won’t be a direct bailout. The Digital Services Tax Bill, which from memory is likely to generate $60 million per year, will be used to support news, current affairs and other such shows.
      
      And that’s how National will try to sell it, as if they’re making the best of a bad situation. After all, who wants to see news and current affairs hampered? We all know a robust local voice is vital to our democracy and independence.
      
      Yada, yada, yada.
      
      Lee will effectively adopt the argument the media have been chanting ever since Newshub announced its demise months ago. The effect will be to keep the corruption and wokeness alive and kicking.

      You’ve got it backwards. Lee has scored an own goal by self-leaking details about a policy paper which cabinet has not fully discussed or approved.
      
      Further, the details she’s talked about have got that failed media in a frenzy because it contains the possibility of a bailout via taxing social media companies and giving the proceeds to that failed media.
      
      Worst of all, the Digital Services Tax Bill was opposed by National when it was introduced by Labour last year. All she had to do was continue that opposition and the media wouldn’t have had cause for hope of a bailout. Instead she now appears to back it and the questions are coming thick and fast.
      
      National is likely to go down as the party that breathed new life into a corrupt media that was about to be hoist by its own petard.

      Prohibiting sending gay teenagers to ‘straight boot camp’ is one thing.
      
      But AFAIK this regime prohibits any individual from doing anything other than to affirm the gender identity of a minor. So if a 14 year old girl says “I am a boy” you need to unreservedly affirm her decision. That seems crazy.

    I’m surprised Melissa Lee is handling this so badly when she did such a good job in Parliament demolishing Willie Jackson’s mad schemes.
    Surely she has advisers who can help her with some stock answers about the worth of media and its place in the modern world without that silly laughing she does that the media love to highlight.
    I suspect Winston is making mischief in the background and I hope it’s to stop any money being shovelled out. The media has to learn the hard lessons and adjust to the world as it is today.

      Melissa Lee spelled out her program for the media in a guest article on Kiwiblog. This was when she was in Opposition, a couple or so years ago.
      
      Give her a break. The TV in people’s home shows familiar TV personalities understandably upset because their jobs are going. It’s not the moment to be thundering about (inevitable) cuts.
      
      Amid this the State-owned media give unfairly representative coverage to the Greens and defeated Labour. They are trying to overturn the General Election result.
      
      Melissa Lee is probably right in her tactics. The last-hope Digital Services Tax Bill will fade out when overseas giants throw it in their wastepaper baskets. The media won’t be able to blame the Coalition.

      I had not appreciated that Melissa has been in Parliament since 2008. She was not a Minister in the Key and English governments. So she had a 15 year wait to become a Minister.
      
      It is far too early to give her a fail mark. However being a Minister is completely different to being in Opposition. I am sensing that she is finding that transition somewhat challenging.

  One day I talked to an older curator and I asked him about the gang members. He said if they leave flags he takes them down, he won’t let them leave alcohol bottles on the graves or congregate out on the street. He says they should pay due respect to the deceased and he lets them know

  If prisoners are allowed out for tangi at all – and that’s something they need to “rethink” – the rule should be if there are any gang members present the leave is immediately cancelled, and the prisoner returned to the prison.
  
  As an aside, I don’t see any commitment from Luxon to tackle gangs in a serious way. Along with restoring 3S, that should be his governments key criminal justice policy.

With all the missiles fired at Gaza , how can the Israeli government be sure that they themselves haven’t already killed the hostages?

Also, what is the point of Hamas having hostages if the Israeli government attack anyway. Isn’t it the point of hostage taking to inhibit such attacks?

The hostages have been there for six months, food, water, and medical supplies are scarce. Would Hamas be interested in the care of hostages who seem to be of very little tactical value ?

  No, despite the tens of thousands of dead Palestinian civilians undermining the claim, the Israelis only ever use the utmost care and selectivity when deploying their weaponry, so it follows that the hostages must be alive.
  
  But who knows? The lives of ordinary Israelis seem to come second to whatever benefits the wider group and the more powerful Jews in general. For instance, assuming they didn’t see it coming (which seems doubtful, given how vaunted Israeli intel is), they sat on their hands for hours before acting on Oct 7th, and then when they did act (as can be deduced from the damage caused by what could only be advanced Israeli weaponry) many (if not most) of the Israeli casualties were due to friendly fire.
  
  The best we can say is that at least it gave them a good excuse to invade Gaza, and probably annex it into Israel, given that there’s nothing for the Gazans to return to now.

Puberty blockers have been shown to cause long-term fertility problems in boys, according to a preprint study from Mayo Clinic. Latest article on anecdotal evidence seems same is happening in New Zealand under the radar ?Or is it just sneaky stealth .

The study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, analyzed more than 130,000 sperm cells from male children with gender dysphoria.

All participants were 17 or younger.

TRANS CHILDREN WHO TOOK PUBERTY-BLOCKING DRUGS HAD MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES, UK STUDY FOUND

The researchers analyzed the testicular cells of boys who had been taking puberty blockers for anywhere from three months to 52 months, and compared them to cells of a control group who had not been on the blockers.

Among those on puberty blockers, the researchers identified mild to severe “sex gland atrophy,” determining that the medications accelerated the aging and function of testicular cells.

The findings suggest that puberty blockers’ impacts may be permanent — disputing claims that such effects can be reversed.

The researchers also detected cases of microlithiasis, which is marked by the presence of small clusters of calcium in the testicles.

‘GENDER-AFFIRMING’ TREATMENTS DON’T BENEFIT YOUTH, SAYS PEDIATRICIANS GROUP: ‘IRREVERSIBLE CONSEQUENCES’

Additional research from Mayo Clinic has linked testicular microlithiasis to an increased risk of testicular cancer.

“We provide unprecedented histological evidence revealing detrimental pediatric testicular sex gland responses to [puberty blockers],” the authors wrote in the study findings.

Doctors highlight the risks
Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and a Fox News medical contributor, was not involved in the Mayo Clinic research but commented on the use of puberty blockers.

“Thousands of U.S. children — more than ever before — are experiencing gender dysphoria and many go on to identify as transgender,” Siegel told Fox News Digital.

“They certainly still face a stigma for this, which needs to be addressed — but at the same time, the growing rush to gender-affirming treatment is disturbing, particularly without parental approval.”

In 2021, approximately 42,167 children received gender dysphoria diagnoses, almost triple the 15,172 reported in 2017, according to Reuters.

“Much of this is politically driven, and may lead to premature treatments that are not offered in the U.K., Finland, Sweden or many other countries,” Siegel said.

Among the puberty-blocking drugs is lupron (leuprolide), which is a type of hormone therapy used for advanced prostate cancer.

It is also used to stop early puberty in children, according to WebMD.

“It helps to delay sexual development (such as growth of the breasts/testicles) and the start of menstrual periods,” WebMD reported.

“It also helps slow down early bone growth to increase the likelihood of reaching normal adult height.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported 10,000 adverse effects in children in 2017 — including mood swings, cognitive problems, suicidal thoughts, longer-term fertility problems, seizures, migraines, brittle bones, brain swelling and vision loss, according to Siegel.

Experts also warn of the potential mental impacts of these drugs.

“Transgender individuals are three times more likely than the general population to suffer from anxiety, depression and neurodevelopmental issues,” Siegel warned.

“Much of this is politically driven, and may lead to premature treatments.”

Although some studies have shown that interventions such as puberty blockers may decrease anxiety in the short term, Siegel pointed out that “there are no longer-term head-to-head trials versus extensive therapy and watchful waiting.”

Puberty blockers typically lead children down a path to long-term use of transgender-affirming hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone, he noted.

“These hormones carry their own risks — for example, estrogen may increase the incidence of breast cancer,” Siegel said.

“Bottom line, I don’t believe puberty blockers should be given routinely to children and teens for gender dysphoria,” Siegel said. “There are too many long-term risks, including the idea that the children or teens may change their minds.”

In the majority of cases, Siegel recommends that any hormonal interventions or gender reassignment surgeries be delayed until an older age.

He added, “Intensive supportive and cognitive therapy makes sense as an initial approach.”

Dr. Brett Osborn, a Florida neurologist and longevity expert who was also not involved in the new research, noted that previous studies have shown that puberty-blocking drugs can alter the normal progression of testicular cells, potentially leading to atrophy or abnormal development.

“Specifically, the drugs impact the normal function of ‘spermatogonial’ stem cells (SSCs), which are crucial for sperm production and overall reproductive health,” he told Fox News Digital.

“The changes induced by these medications may be permanent, contrary to popular opinion among transgender activists.”

“Disruption in their development could result in reduced fertility or other reproductive issues later in life,” he continued. “Based on the researchers’ histologic findings, the changes induced by these medications may be permanent, contrary to popular opinion among transgender activists.”

Added Osborn, “These medications are not as benign as billed.”

The risks go beyond infertility, the doctor warned.

“There are also downrange effects of altered hormone levels on brain development, let alone other organ systems,” he said.

The new fast track resource consenting bill seems to have some speed wobbles of its own leaving Bish with a bit of egg on his face. Seems 200 firms made enquiries concerning the proposals. When the Government was ready to receive proposals, it (under Bish’s name?) sent out emails to the firms ‘inviting’ or ‘requesting’ them or whatever to submit applications by 3 May. The text of the communication the not been released so it is not possible to determine the clarity of the email. Seemed some receivers of the email who were blissfully unaware that it went to all parties may have assumed it was being sent to selected firms only. Given that assumption, and given that stock exchange listed companies are obliged to keep the market informed of issues that could affect share prices, two listed companies (with submarine mining proposals) issued releases to the effect that they had been ‘invited’ to apply for a fast track consent with the implication that the invitations were exclusive. No this got the anti-mining lobby to go all emotional and they complained to the stock exchanges concerned and to Bish. Bish was a bit horrified to think that the circular email (in his name?) was being interpreted in this way. Moral for Bish and his people – the email should have stated that it was being to all those who had shown initial interest.
The NZ company concerned correctly advised NZX and the market of the invitation which saw its share price increase 25% and NZX imposed a trading halt. Company this morning issued a clarification and presumably trading will resume at 10am Friday. It will be interesting to see if the 25% share price increase is sustained.
It just shows that Government agencies and Ministerial advisers have to be super careful in their communications.

    Yes. It could be.
    
    There is an equilibrium relationship between the CO2 in the atmosphere and in the oceans.
    
    The world started warming before humans could have been the cause. If humans were not putting CO2 into the atmosphere then CO2 would move from the oceans into the atmosphere to correct the imbalance caused by the decreased solubility because of Henry’s Law. We are putting more CO2 into the atmosphere than is needed for this equilibration process so the net CO2 movement is in the other direction.
    
    Something I think is interesting is that the rate of increase in atmospheric CO2 ( what NOAA call CO2 growth) correlates well with change in temperature. When there is an increase in temperature, there is an increase in CO2 growth.
    A decrease in temperature correlates with a decrease in CO2 growth. A fall in temperature when CO2 is increasing.
    
    This is only possible if temperature is the cause and CO2 change the result.
    
    This year there was a large lift in temperature resulting is the largest increase in CO2 at Mauna Loa since measurements there began.

Listening to the media indicates that the coalition government cannot do one thing right, have no policies that the pubic agree with and there is no spokesperson that can be found who will support any said policies.

Most right thinking people know that not all governments get it 100% right and equally none get it 100% wrong. Anyone who asserts otherwise is an activist and therefore demonstrably biased and has no credibility. The New Zealand media has relentlessly attacked this coalition from the day they started negotiations and hence we see them for what they are.

  Instead of holding the Labour government to account between 2020 and 2023, the media spent virtually all of the time attacking National and ACT. It became even worse when Luxon was elected leader.

    That’s a little harsh on sewer rats. Rattus Norvegicus has a useful function – they survive mainly on discarded human food, and anything else that can be eaten without negative consequences; so they (a) reduce ambient smelly rubbish and do so (b) staying out of sight and (c) they improve the food chain without charging. I firmly believe the point of the mini ministries is keep ambitious MPs from causing trouble in caucus. It creates under-worked ministers who can spend time courting votes from “their” people.
According to the woke Labour identity ideology, they needed a ministry and a minister for each “community”. The thing they have in common in that none of the communities want to contribute to New Zealand; they want to be recognised and praised because they are “special”.

Odd that the met nz site has no rain forecast for this afternoon but keep the banner headline warning of severe thunderstorms.
They have created the scary orange and red watch/warnings and feel obliged to use them.
Wasn’t it funny the first time they used the red watch/warning and the headlines screamed “unprecedented” red watch/warning.

Prediction: Soon they will start to say the increase in orange watches/warnings is a sure sign of a changing climate.

I know I’ve banged on previously about a ‘Dress-Code’ for Parliament.

Had actually hoped the new Speaker might have addressed it. But alas no. Except for the odd exception, the majority those on the ‘Left’ still look like a bunch of unwashed scruffs.

What the women opposite need to do, is take a leaf out of Tanya Unkovich’s book.
She always looks immaculately presented… and always beautifuly groomed.
Actually reminds me bit of my partner’s mum. Obviously a fan of Chanel as well.

So, while Jacinda swans around shopping in the UK city of Oxford this week,
school-holiday traffic in Auckland has come to a standstill.
It’s f***ing chaos out there!
Manhole covers on the motorway have become dislodged due to lack of maintenence, southern lanes of the HarbourBridge are closed in both directions, a rail bridge in the South Island is close to collapse, and the CRL looks like costing ratepayers 5 billion dollars ABOVE the original estimate!!
No wonder she hoofed it last year… knew exactly what was coming.
