    Broadly speaking they said “under the Basin Reserve”.
    
    If you look at a line between Kilbirnie Park-ish to The Terrace-ish it goes under the Basin.
    
    I don’t understand why they’d want to have it go to The Terrace though.

    I was living in 28 MacDonald Cresc in 1974 when the Motorway Tunnel construction was taking place.
    Houses had gone from the South side of the road, but the tunnel went under 32 MacDonald Cresc and houses on upper Dixon St and onto the Terrace.
    
    The original houses on MacDonald Cresc and upper Dixon Street are still standing.

      All depends how deep the tunnel is.
      Elon Musk says creating his large tunnels do not disturb people on the surface. ie they dont hear of feel a thing.
      
      Of course we hear about all the Hamas tunnels, Dug underground and not picked up by Israeli surface sound monitors.
      
      Below sea level tunnels(ie under Wellington/Basin Reserve) are dug all the time.
      
      So my guess its “doable””.
      Time and cost of course is the main consideration.

    They can go under private property but they would still need to ‘take land’ under the Public Works Act. In practice this would mean placing an easement on the land above the route of the tunnel and payment of compensation (because a land owner theoretically owns the land to the bowels of the Earth and up to the heavens – “Cuius est solum, eius est usque ad coelum et ad inferos”). An assessment would be done on each property to determine the possible impact on any buildings or future development to help design and determination of compensation. Some Wadestown and Newlands properties have similar easements as they are above railway tunnels. There would similarly be easements and possibly more complex agreements for the new underground rail line in Auckland. In particular there was significant negotiations and coordination with Precinct Properties for continuing the line beyond Britomart with the rail route being incorporated within the foundations of a new building.
    When Vector (then Mercury) built its cable tunnel into Auckland CBD, it found it more practicable to follow a route under streets than to go to the bother of having to arrange easements etc.

  When they started the “new” entrance to the Terrace tunnel. I thought they were going to do a “cut and cover” all the way to the Basin Reserve, with the cross street linked with bridges.
  1. Taking out all those traffic lights
  2. Speeding up the traffic through and around Wellington.
  3. Leaving the “land” above the road to be sold to recoup costs.

  Put a new basin reserve on the waterfront opposite the stadium where the land is crap to build on.
  
  A 10-15k seater for test cricket, Phoenix football and Lions.

    Athletic Park was private property. The Basin Reserve and the strip between Cambridge and Kent Terraces down to the sea have always been public property (incidentally the 1855 earthquake put paid to the plans for the proposed canal and shipping basin).

      Wimbledon tennis courts were relocated in 1922 (presumably there was undeveloped land in Wimbledon then) and the hallowed Centre Court dates from then. Wimbledon Football Club moved from Wimbledon to Milton Keynes (87 km away) in 2003. Not sure if there was anything hallowed about the former football ground in Wimbledon which was developed for housing.

  I think I have a far simpler, and better option: fire more government workers in Wellington. That would ease traffic congestion and give you the 15 minute improvement without even having to go through the risks of building an underwater tunnel in an earthquake zone.

  Basin flyover to allow N/S traffic to flow…. 2nd Mt Vic tunnel and double lane to Evans Bay…. Then its just the stupidity of the Terrace tunnel needing to be addressed to make 2 lanes each way…
  
  Once that is done things will be much improved fir the Eastern Suburbs plus access to the Airport

    Another option and cheaper is move the airport to Belmont park. Compare, Wellington airport is 6M passengers. Denver, 64M passengers a year and cost $7.4B. Then you probably don’t need to spend as much on route improvements from the Terrace tunnel to the Miramar peninsula.

Last night I watched the current affairs programme “Sunday” on TV1. It presented a totally one sided view of the situation in Gaza. The problem according to the programme, is Netanyahu and his radical colleagues in cabinet. Also they said, “Gaza is an open air prison camp.” Also the solution is a two state solution. Also the Israelis are likely commiting genocide in Gaza. Also the Americans are wrong in supporting Israel.

There were a few minutes about the massacre on October 7th at the beginning of the programme. But nothing about Hamas wants to destroy Israel. Nothing about the fact that Hamas doesn’t want a two state solution, that was not mentioned. Nothing about the radicalisation of the population of Gaza. Nothing about the humanitarian aid that went to Gaza which was used by Hamas to make military tunnels. Nothing about the fate of the Israeli hostages.

No, the problem according to “Sunday” is the Israelis and their leadership and if they only treated the Palestinians better and instituted a two state solution all would be well.

At the end of the programme, the host, Miryam Kamo announced it had been a hard week for them and thanked everyone for their support and the show will end in May.
Given the lack of balance and the blatantly one sided reporting the end of the show can’t come soon enough.

    Israel’s attack on Iran’s sovereign territory (ie Embassies are countries territory. Think of The Ecuadorian embassy in London and Britain’s inability to enter arrest Assange.
    
    Iranian support for an independent political/military organisation is not guilty of the Oct 7th invasion.
    
    If you think Iran is guilty of the Oct 7th invasion. Then logically you must condemn the USA for killing Palestinians. ie they provide Support to an Independent Israel.

New Zealand. Where domestic violence against women by Maori men is so normalized that instead of putting known pieces of shit like this in jail to protect victims, we give the woman a “domestic violence button” so she can get help efficiently after she has been bashed. Assuming she is still conscious of course.

It’s also pleasing to see that the offenders race has been fairly considered with a section 27 report and that his sentence was heavily discounted from 8 years to 4, with him being eligible for parole this year, only 18 months after the attack. Because you know, he’s genuinely remorseful this time.

Why don’t they look at his previous criminal history and see that he has already done jail time for smashing and strangling his partner. You can’t change them, especially when they are basically let off and the actions blamed on others.

Nz judges, you are an absolute disgrace.

  and honestly, the crown isn’t there to help you if you are a victim they will provide more assistance to the criminal and don’t really care if you become a victim again. I watched the interview on Q&A yesterday with the new chair of Ngapuhi (or Nga Puhi).
Its a pity Q&A don’t more of these longer form interviews (rather than the usual short form which
seems based on ‘Gotcha’ questions) and this one did draw out some of the deep thoughts of the
Ngapuhi guy.
My over-all thought was that Ngapuhi think they are entitled to more respect – because the treaty was set up in their area, and they are the biggest tribe (I think).
However two historical comments from others kept re-occurring in my mind.
One was Chris Findlayson who concluded that – after failing to make any progress with Ngapuhi and a treaty settlement – said that they (Ngapuhi) should be treated with ‘Benign neglact’. He obviously felt that Ngapuhi were pretty much incapable of logical thinking.
The other was from a lawyer whose father was an officer in the 28th Maori Battalion. He went with his father to a reunion. There he learned that within the battalion Ngapuhi (A Company), were regarded as nothing but trouble makers who
thought they were a step above all the others.

The new Chairman certainly came across as thoughtful and considered – but I couldnt help but think that one can be thoughtful and considerate while making use of a treaty payout. I doubt that his efforts will make any difference to the
divisions with the overall Ngapuhi group of subtribes.
The Maori economy is growing by the day. Treaty settlements and the result thereof are (currently ) tax free and its estimated that some $billions of tax are not being contributed to the countries Government because of this state of affairs.
It cant continue – and Ngapuhi will possibly miss out on the growth that this tax free status offers – which the other tribes have benefited from.
At the end of the interview I came to the conclusion that Ngapuhi is a tribe that meets the ‘Special Needs’ definition.
They think they are Special, but their actions indicate that they fit into the category of ‘Special Needs’.
The phrase ‘Special Needs’ is the politically correct way of saying ‘Handicapped’ – which can be physical or mental.
I have no doubt that the people of Ngapuhi are both financially and emotionally handicapped by the retarded way the tribal leadership is behaving.

  I laugh when people talk about kiwi’s and number 8 ingenuity. You can find isolated examples of this.
  
  But, NZ is a nation of tragics when it comes to delivering large infrastructure at a reasonable cost.
  
  Tunnels are a great example, compare the price of tunnels in europe vs NZ. We can build them, but at such tremendous cost we can’t built many.

    I have to say, although I am a big KB supporter, I was disappointed by this too. A strong automatic presumption towards an act of Islamic terror, when the full story hadn’t emerged yet. Some of the comments were juvenile and immature and not befitting a mature group of intelligent adults, IMHO.
    I trust some are feeling somewhat penitent after it has been confirmed that the perpetrator had serious mental health issues. He could have been from any one of our families.

        There are very few people with “real mental illness”. And infrequently among those is there violence.
        But you could say there is lots of mental illness if among offenders you include overblown entitlement, anger issues, rage about nothing much, etc etc.

        Not sure why you are suggesting mental health is used for sympathy. All reporting in Australia refers to him as a ‘butcher’ or a ‘murderer’ – there is no compassion shown for him at all.         According to reports in the Aus Herald Sun, a previous girlfriend said when she was with him he was completely lovely and acted completely normally. The same article also stated he had mental health issues since he was 17 (to what degree at that age I’m not sure), but somewhere along the line he was reportedly diagnosed with Schizophrenia. I’m wondering if he was on and off (or just off) the medication for that.

    Through out the First World War Germany brought rubber off of the British who bought optical glass for gun sights off of the Germans via third parties in Switzerland. There is an ancient stone carving I remember seeing which depicts one man pulling a cow by its horns whilst another pulls it in the opposite direction by its tail a third is seated on a stool milking it.     Nowhere is this more apparent than in the arms industry (shares of which are probably owned by almost every congressperson).
    
    Most USA armaments are woefully out of date and also massively over priced. They are often obsolete, or on the verge of obsolescence, and there are no business pressures to improve them.
    
    For example, look at the Javelin missile system. It is based on 1996 technology, sure with a few minor tweaks. It costs over USD200k a pop. That is ridiculous.
    Given the advances in electronics, it should be easy to build much better versions (smaller, lighter, use less power, more reliable, easier to use,…) for a small fraction of the price. $20k each should leave room for a healthy profit.
    
    But no, there is no incentive to change the current business model, so no incentive to produce better products either.

Did anyone watch the Sunday show about Israel? I was very disappointed in Miriam Kamo. She took the same position as António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN that the atrocities did not happen in isolation.

Like most here on Kiwiblog I believe that nothing Israel has done in the West Bank and Gaza justifies the mass rapes, the killing of children in front of their parents and the taking of hostages including children and even a baby.

    In defence of Winston, he is just echoing the same hollow calls of all the worlds western ‘leaders’. The other world leaders are calling for death to Israil and death to America.
    What the western leaders are really calling for is Israil to stop beating on Hamas and a return to the previous situation. They want this because the previous situation didn’t effect anyone outside of the middle east and this does.
    
    The situation people want to return to was a Palestinian state and an Israeli state (2 state?) where Hamas ran part of the Palestinian state. Occasionally the Palestinians would lob random missiles at Israel (not military targets). Every 2 years or so a massive strike would be launched from Palestine and the Israelis would retaliate. The Israelis would be criticised in the world media. The Palestinians would then rebuild over the next 2 years. Rinse and repeat.
    
    This is what a two state solution would look like under Hamas leadership. It is incredibly hard to negotiate a long lasting peaceful outcome when one side wants the total annihilation on the other side.

  However, there is no justification for what happened on that day. The response by the Israeli military is rightly used by the Israeli military as justification for their response. It makes the outcomes no less horrific.
  
  Bibi’s statement that the Israeli military will revenge the atrocity was a less thoughtful expression and probably tells us who he is and why many Israelis dislike him.

  It came out quite some time later, that special, news stories on the network news and spots on breakfast TV, were part of what are known as “commercial integrations”, which means they were funded and produced in conjunction with parties who wished to promote a certain view yet the pieces were presented as legitimate news stories.

  It’s amazing how the pro-Zionists completely ignore the preceding 80 years and more when they assess Oct 7th.
  
  But they have to ignore it, otherwise, first, it becomes apparent that the Palestinian’s were acting as almost any other occupied and oppressed people would have done by striking at the people dominating and humiliating them for so long, and second, Israel’s vastly excessive actions in retaliation become unconscionable, at least to anyone capable of objective analysis or even the slightest amount of thought.
  
  I just can’t take the Israelis and their supporters seriously when they grossly misrepresent the situation, the historical context, and the Israelis’ key causal role in the events. They are deluding themselves and lying to everyone else.
  
  We don’t have to agree with Hamas’ incursion on Oct 7th to conclude that it, or something like it, was the inevitable result of decades of Israeli policy towards the Arabs.

    Che, if anything Israel had massively softened its stance over the last 10 years. You might be forgiven for thinking that this would lead to increased peace from the Gazans.
    
    And that is probably what kicked off October 7 – not increased tension, but increased peace.
    
    As a result of this increased peace, Hamas and the other Iranian lackeys, were quite likely losing support. Just as more and more Jews were looking for peace, quite likely more and more Gazans were too.
    
    Indeed, thousands of Gazans were travelling daily to work in Israel. Those sorts of interactions build bridges and bonds – not hatred.
    
    This would have been an existential threat for Hamas etc. They knew the only way to retain their relevance was through conflict.
    
    Who has the most to gain out of what is happening? Not Israel. Not day to day Gazans, but the Hamas elite and their ilk (and the military industrial complex, but that’s another story).

        The problem with calling your opponents “mad dogs” or similar metaphors is that it’s just seeking an alibi or excuse, not seeking a solution. It’s done by people who can’t solve the problem so just seek a way to explain away the problem so doesn’t get pinned onto them.
        But examine the situation just a little more closely and you can see this “mad dog” description just doesn’t make any sense.
        Mad dogs maybe scary, but they are no real threat, they can’t be, they’re mad and don’t understand how reality works.
        What have we actually seen in the last 48 hours?
        Guy stabs a bunch of people in a shopping mall and kills maybe 6 including women and children before being shot dead by the Police.
        That’s a mad dog, and he is never going to win.
        A boxer will always beat a brawler and a trained officer will always beat a maniac, and for many, many different reasons. Gun vs. Knife is only one of them, (how did the officer get the gun + ammo + training + back up and logistic support etc.?)
        What else did we see in the last 48 hours?
        Iran launched a complex multi-vector attack against Israel using drones, cruise and ballistic missiles from distances over 1000km. We don’t know the exact results but at least 7 hits on an air force base are being reported by Western media.
        That’s NOT mad dog.
        That shows a deep understanding of how reality works. Trying to explain it away as just irrational madness makes finding a real solution to the problem impossible. Some people would sooner die than admit their judgements were wrong, better to blame your failings onto someone else.

      So what? There were millions of Arabs already living there (“country” or no country) when the UN (who most of you repudiate when they do or say things you don’t like) decided to give Jews someone else’s land. Chaos ensued, which anyone with a functioning brain could have foreseen.
      
      Saying that “Jews have a right to the land” or “the UN gave it to them” are just abstract ideas. What matters in concreto is that in order for Israel to come into being in a practical sense, millions of Arabs would have to be made to get very upset, displaced or killed to do it.

        There were similar actions with the partition of India in 1948 – 9. Similar event, initially similar reaction, but now scaled down but still simmering. This was the beginning of Pakistan and Bangladesh. Similar because the Muslims were given their own land apart from the other religions. Wonder why?

        While there were Arabs living the the area, there were also Jews. The estimate is in the 500,000 range. AT NO TIME in the past 3000 odd years has the are been completely empty of Jews, and the Arabs living there moved into the area in recent history only, i.e. in the past past 1000 odd years. To claim that the land belongs to the Arabs is to ignore 3000 odd years of history, and particularly to ignore the history of the middle east since before the rise of Rome. Israel was a nation when Rome invaded and renamed it Palestine (Palaestina actually), which relates to the area on the Mediterranean Sea that had historically been inhabited by the “Philistines”. The modern day “Palestinians” have nothing to do with the ancient Philistines however, but are historically speaking new comers in the area.
        In the ~1900 between the Jewish diaspora and the land being GIVEN BACK TO THE Jews, there was no state in the area, and people who called themselves a nation or referred to themselves as “Palestinians”.

        Che, you are quite wrong again. There were not “millions” of Arabs living in the Mandate. There were less than 800,000 people there in the 1922 census. And that included everyone. In actual fact, there were only 590,000 Muslims in the Mandate. secondly, the Jews were not given someone elses land. The Jews were allowed to form a Country State. A Country State where no other Country State existed. There were NO palestinian people in the area at the end of WW1. There were only Ottoman subjects. The area was split into 3 districts, Acre, Nablus and Jerusalem. The first two were linked to the province of Beirut, and the autonomous district of Jerusalem dealt directly with Istanbul.

    I like how the Jew haters alway point out that there is a history in this issue and we must look back to prior years. Thats very true but what they do is pretend that prior to October 7th only the Jews did bad things and that the Palestinians are the good guys.
    
    Both sides have done bad shit over the years. The situation isn’t good.
    
    However in the last 20 years the Isrealis have totally moved out of the west bank and given Palestinians total control. They have only responded to aggression from Hamas, never instigated. They have offered a number of treaties and settlements that have all been declined. The same is true during this conflict. Isreal has offered numerous ceasefires (in return for the freeing of hostages). Hamas always declines. It seems like only one side here is interested in a peaceful solution.

        I may be “predictable” on this point (unswervingly consistent, I would say), but, whether you agree with my conclusions or not, all of my arguments are cogent, internally consistent, and rely on facts and plausible inferences therefrom.
        
        More often that not, I cannot say the same about my interlocuters, who descend into childish name-calling very quickly, if not immediately.
        
        The “problem,” such as it is, is that my conclusions challenge many peoples’ deep seated prejudices and assumptions about how the world works.
        
        Calling me a “Jew-hater” is an ad hominem par excellence (if I may combine the Latin with the French), and isn’t a substitute for a rebuttal.

        Show me any evidence of anything that I have said showing that I “hate” Jews in themselves, i.e. simply for being Jewish.
        
        I am certainly very critical of Israel and elite Jewish influence in society and politics, but that doesn’t mean I hate Jews. That’s about the activities of people, not about the people themselves. It’s a false equivalence, but cynically crying “hate” is what people who gave no good arguments do.
        
        By your own standards of what apparently constitutes “hate,” a lot of KBers who are continually critical of Labour and the Greens and their influence on society and politics must hate Labour and Green politicians.
        
        In my case as well as theirs, its not about who the target of the criticism is, it’s about what they say and do. Very different things.

      Try not to make it about specific instances because if you say Israel has NEVER done that, then you will have to know EVERYTHING that Israel has EVER done. Just not possible.
      Try to tell me the general rule you use when, in a cycle of retaliation and counter retaliation, vendettas, blood feuds and tribal warfare that has been going on for generations, you can say that THAT act was a justified retaliation, but THIS act was unprovoked aggression?
      That is if you do have a rule.
      Maybe it’s just determined by tribal politics. THIS tribe is my tribe, what they do is right. THAT tribe is not my tribe, what they do is wrong.

For instance, she will never have heard of Haj Amin al-Husseini, who was former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, and Muslim leader in Mandatory Palestine (even though he was exiled for his part in the 1936-39 Arab revolt). al Husseini met with Hitler in 1941. During that meeting, Husseini told Hitler that the entire Arab world admired him and that they believed Germany would win. Husseini volunteered to raise troops (including for service in the Waffen SS) from Arab nations, claiming that they had mutual enemies in England, the Jews and communists. He asked Hitler for assistance in preventing a Jewish homeland and the implementation of the “Final Solution”. Hitler responded that the German “goal at that time would be the annihilation of Jewry living in Arab space under the protection of British power”.
  The other error people make is believing that the conflict is being driven by land. It’s not. It is a religious conflict. Like it has been since Islam became a religion in roughly 610AD (that’s long after Jews were settled in the Kingdom of Israel).

        Compare his reputation to Alexander, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Napoleon Bonaparte or Shaka Zulu and the strangeness of it all becomes much clearer.
        All those other warlords were, for their time and place enormously bloodstained and yet are all great heroes in their homelands.

    In my extended family are two families with vastly different kids. Family One – the younger son is a very high ranking police officer and the older son a hopeless heroin addict with no job, home, or prospects.
    FamilyTwo – three daughters and two older ones are university educated and hold senior positions in international companies. The youngest daughter has a tribe of kids (to different fathers), lives on a benefit and is covered in home done tattoos. She has had a series of equally useless “boyfriends” and gets drunk at the weekends.
    So is it the upbringing? And obviously it’s nothing to do with being first born etc.
    As somebody here said it could happen in anybody’s family.

        It is one thing shooting holes in paper. It is quite another making holes in people, then dealing with the aftermath.
        
        I hope Inspector Scott had the right training to deal with this.
        
        Key aspects are:
        * It was her duty to do this. It was not her action, it was that of the whole of society.
        * The stabber was a target. Not a living person. He ceased to be a living person once he had set this chain of events in action. She just happened to be the one who happened to be holding the firearm.

        From a family friend who was a copper until a few years ago. The NZ Police get 50 rounds per year and you pass the qualifying, you don’t get to shoot the rest. Range was 7m. With a rifle and red dot sight, that is damn near touching distance if you have long arms.

      Cop in Hawaii I talked to (mentioning our Police) said NZers seeing a gun may make people feel intimidated. My comment? Only if they have done something wrong.
      I took his photo but asked him to move his arm so I could get the gun in the picture.

        Having previously lived in a society where guns were carried often by police and civilians alike, I can’t really say I find them intimidating. Heck I used to sometimes carry guns myself.

    I agree – bring back the height requirement. Rightly or wrongly physical presence does seem to matter in these situations (there’s plenty of well paid white collar jobs for the vertically challenged). I think it was only 170cm or something relatively chicken shit anyway so still allows for a big enough proportion of the population. (6ft/183 cm woman here, I’m afraid I find it hard to give too much of shit about “discriminating” against short people).

      Yup, physical size really helps, especially when trying to control drunk or otherwise diminished people.
      
      I did a bit of bouncing at university. Anyone that knows me well knows that I am not violent, but I am 196cm (6ft 5) so people would generally just comply with my request to take their business elsewhere. You’d often see the drunk guy’s wheels whirring as he was trying to figure out whether it is worth making a swing and, generally, coming to the (wrong) conclusion that I would hurt them badly.
      
      On the other hand, another regular bouncer I knew was about 5 ft 8 or so (so pretty short). He was ex-Rhodesian special forces. Small, runty looking guy but highly capable. He got into fights at least once a month, breaking the odd jaw etc.
      
      Size shouldn’t matter, but it does.

        CMM – I’m inclined to agree. Short people aren’t necessarily physically weaker, but they have less presence. I think the female equivalent of the fighting that you talk about re your Rhodesian SF friend is sexual harassment. I’m 6 foot tall, slim (when younger I was very slim), quite reserved, have always worked in male dominated environments including 10 years in the Army and yet I’ve never been, as far as I can tell, susceptible to the sexual harassment nonsense. Short girls used to tell me I was lucky for being tall – I now realise that while it’s not an exact science there is something in it. I think there is something about being on eye level with people that engenders respect. As you say it shouldn’t matter, but it does.

      Size and strength do matter but there are plenty of jobs for cops and law enforcement officers to do. Undercover work and supervising investigations don’t seem to need big men. VIP bodyguards will have an advantage if large, part of which is psychological, but then again, their department might also have average and anonymous looking officers just mingling in the crowd.
      Ever heard of “The Postdam Giants”? A Prussian King had an elite regiment of exceptionally tall men recruited from all over Europe. Superior pay and conditions, they even set them up with exceptionally tall wives. Charles Darwin said it was the only human breeding program that he was aware of.
      Kind of a debate about how effective they actually were. Big men can get shot on the frontlines just as easy, maybe easier than regular sized men.
      They looked very impressive though.

Reading the case of the two Brazilians who are being kicked out after their visa lapsed leaves me in two minds:

They tried to do the right thing and their over-stayer status is due to someone else messing up. Maybe they should be given a bit of wiggle room.

On the other hand, what value do they bring to NZ? If someone can’t even fill out visa forms without help then they clearly are not working for RocketLab. Indeed, they even admit that they can’t meet the (very low) requirements of the skilled migrant category. Bye, bye. Back to Brazil.

In my opinion, immigration advisers should be banned. Being able to fill out a form yourself is part of the filter to try to keep out the least capable dross.

        I am just frustrated that after a decade + of court costs and losses in the ones that matter, he has not been deported even though the last case confirmed he should be. The last case almost 2 years ago.
        
        I don’t care if you think he is guilty or not. He has lost his extradition case and should be sent to America to face trial. As it was Obama that started this whole thing it is likely the US aren’t even particularly interested anymore anyway.

Now, in a bizarre twist, the Jerusalem Post reports that, according to a Turkish report, Biden actually gave Iran the green light to attack Israel!

  Funding them (ransom payouts and allowing oil sales) and trying to get their nuclear progam going again. He is not raising the issue of Irans involvement in the initial strike on Isreal or the dead US soldiers killed in the region by Irans agents.
  
  For Isreal he is…
  Supplying weapons and support to Isreal. Claiming unconditional support for them.
  
  This leads to the crazy situation where after the Iran attack Joe is both 100% behind Isreal and refusing to support any strike on Iran.
  
  Joe Biden has a lot of blame with regards to this situation and the Ukraine war. His foreign politics must be the worst of any recent President.

      It is pretty clear Biden doesn’t have dementia. No-one with dementia could give a State of the Union address in the way that Biden did.
      
      He has definitely slowed up compared to 4 years ago, but he can still give reasonably competent speeches. Sure he forgets things, but then so do many of us.
      
      I reckon the election is going to be close and could be decided by the debates. Given the low expectations of Biden in the debates, he doesn’t even have to win them, he just has to perform credibly.
      
      At the beginning of the year I thought it was a clear Trump win, but Biden is clearly rising in the polls and has been for a while. I think more Americans are now feeling the improvements in the economy, which is the fastest growing in the developed world.

        Wayne, I’ll wager the people decrying Biden for having dementia (a) haven’t watched the State of the Union address, and (b) haven’t watched any of Trump’s recent rallies end-to-end.
        
        Biden has never been an eloquent speaker. Probably because of his stutter. And he’s definitely slowed up. And I think he’s too old to be President. But I see no signs of dementia.
        
        Trump has been an eloquent speaker in the past. Watch any interview with him from the 1980s and 1990s and it’s marked how far he’s declined. I do see signs of dementia, in his aphasia, in his difficult keeping a train of thought, in how every rally is the same warmed-up repeat of 2016 and 2020 messaging, and in his gait (watch how he swings/drags his right foot).
        
        Biden’s problem is that he stumbles over *words*. Trump’s problem is that he stumbles over *thoughts*.
        
        And for those of you who think Biden has dementia but was jacked up on drugs for the SOTU … you need to patent those drugs, because if you have a drug that can reverse the effects of dementia then you’re going to be richer than Elon Musk.

        I also think it’s too early to say whether Biden or Trump is in front for the election.
        
        I think Trump has maxed out the MAGA vote, and will need other Republicans plus some independents in order to win in November. That looks hard with his upcoming court cases likely to test the non-MAGA Republican support, and with unpopular messaging on abortion, IVF etc unlikely to appeal to enough independents.
        
        I think Biden will have a turnout problem. He has a broader coalition to draw voters from, but whether he can enthuse them enough to get them out to vote is unclear. That is one area where emotive issues like abortion are likely to help him.
        
        Then there’s the question of whether third-party candidates like RFK will (a) draw much vote and (b) from whom. Although RFK is a Kennedy his messaging is much more aligned with MAGA. He’s backed by pro-Trump billionaires, but as the public sees more of RFK it might well be MAGA that likes his messaging on things like vaccines.
        
        Meanwhile I don’t think the polls are reliable. They weren’t that reliable a guide in 2020, and they’ve been far worse in the 2022 mid-terms and subsequent special elections. I don’t know that classical polling techniques like phoning people work well with younger voters in particular … what 20-something is going to answer a call from a concealed number?
        
        Our host might have some insight on these issues?
        
        So I think we’re all going to have to wait for quite a while yet before the picture starts to clarify.

        In the BLS employment survey’s over the last year or so Government has been about 25% of the total jobs added. That’s consistent with Western economies where the public sector is about 25% of the total economy.
        
        Note that typically nearly all of the Government jobs added have been in local (county/state) government, not federal government.

        I don’t think the State of the Union speech tells us much about his mental acuity.
        That was a pre-planned and highly stage-managed event, doing the sort of actions he’s done for most of his adult life, namely standing and speaking from a script.
        The real test is in handling multiple complex long- and short-term life or death problems whilst under pressure from all sides. Like every President in history has had to do.
        You can’t judge him by the standards of a rest home grandpa (which he should be).
        You have to judge him by the standards of the chief executive officer of a global nuclear power (which he unfortunately is).

  If Iran hit air force bases and military HQs (and I think it’s probable they did) then it’s because that’s what they wanted to hit.
  Iran is not insane. they will want a calibrated response for escalation dominance. Don’t go all in on the first hand.
  We must also expect an info-war response here. Israel saying that they got hit but it wasn’t a massacre, so we actually won, is a good line to run.

      You misunderstand me, perhaps deliberately. I agree that climate change is an issue worthy of addressing. Indeed I worked on climate change responses, professionally for some time. However that was quite a long time ago, long before children became tearful with fear about their lives ending.
      
      I maintain that it has now become a religion and that those who advocate mitigation measures, regardless of, or having no regard for the costs, are akin to worshippers of a religion.

The Balfour Declaration is a major root cause of the deadly happenings in the Middle East. Historians have differing views about why it came about but little doubt the major WW1 allies agreed on it. What I found interesting is that the only Jewish minister in the British cabinet at the time was opposed to the Declaration he was also opposed to Zionism. At the time of the Declaration Jews were only about 10% of the population in that area of the Ottoman Empire. This was too dramatically change over the next decades. According to some historian’s helping to solve the Jewish Problem in Europe. While infact transferring it to an unsuspecting Palestine with the result of an ongoing tragedy for all peoples. There are countless other examples in world history I.e partition of India.

  Again from my replay to Che last week.
  While Jews were only 10% of the population of the part of “Mandatory Palestine” that became Israel (about 100,000 people), there were another 700,000 Jews in the greater Ottoman Empire area. The problem they faced was that the Jews were not safe in the new Islamic countries being set up in the former Ottoman Empire so they needed to be relocated. Do you disagree with this?
  
  So was the problem the Balfour Declaration or the religious intolerance that resulted in the lack of safety for Jews in the new states. Note that the partition of India was seen as the most effective solution to the same issue in India.

  It’s misleading to use the fact that a Jewish minister in the British cabinet being opposed to the the Belfour Declaration and Zionism as relevant unless you also provide his arguments. There were a range of opinions on the establishment of Israel, often depending on the orthodoxy of the Jew. Some of the more orthodox Jews for example believed an Israeli state would one day exist but believed it was up to God to establish this, and not up to man. They felt this establishment of Israel was a bad thing, up until the time it was finally established, at which point they used the argument: It has now happened, which means it was God’s will” and so they accepted the new state.
  The point being, they were often not against the establishment of the State of Israel, they were against it being done by man’s strength and planning.

The denouement is very effective, but to get there I had to struggle through 90+ minutes of incoherency. The protagonist belatedly finds out she is in fact Satan’s daughter. She bears a passing resemblance to the Greens’ new co-leader – I wonder if that’s the real “omen”.

    Iran launched a barrage containing 185 explosive drones (nicknamed “suicide-drones”), 36 cruise missiles, and at least 110 ballistic missiles. In addition to the direct Iranian action, their various allies and proxies – the Houthis in Yemen, Iraqi Hezbollah forces in Iraq and Syria, and the Lebanese Hezbollah – also fired at Israel.
    It is remarkable that 99% of them were stopped.
    That Arrow 3 system is just amazing.
    This is a massive Military defeat for Iran. What a failure.
    Seeing Jordan and Saudi Arabia support Israel is also good news.
    I get the feeling Israel will now strike back. I don’t think they have any choice.

      and damaging radar defence/attack systems over wide areas (MQ-58B).
      This highlights the difference between Capitalism and Communism, China, Russia, have none of the chip making ability of the free market economies.
      Warfare is being revolutionised as we speak and many conventional weapons will very quickly become obsolete.
      NVIDIA share price is a good example of how important these new AI chips are, it is up by 2000%

        The majority of weaponry in USA is old. Most of their planes were designed in the age of slide rules (A10, F16, C130,…).
        Their artillery is crap. Half the range of competitive stuff that is 40 years old.
        
        AI is not needed to identify radar. Radar identifies itself by sending out dirty great radio emissions that can generally be detected from tens of km away.
        
        I would not slag off at Chinese chips, especially in the mobile and AI space. There the Chinese are far ahead of what is coming out of USA.

      What would be a “hard hit” that would cause regime change? I would suggest, that given the practical/legal limits of an Israeli strike, there is no prospect that such a strike would cause regime change.
      What will Israel actually do? In my view, most likely some airstrikes and missile strikes on Iranian military facilities. There is no way that such strikes will cause regime change.
      Iran has had the same government, with slight variations, since 1979, which is now 45 years ago. They don’t seem any closer to collapsing than at any time in the last 45 years. They will eventually fall, but that could be decades away. North Korea has had the same government for nearly 80 years, Cuba for 65 years. If the regime supporters, including the armed forces are determined enough, dictatorships like these can last many, many decades. They tend to fall when the regime supporters and enablers essentially give up, as they did in the USSR.

      Iran has a wide range of different drones with different capabilities.
      
      IIRC, the “suicide drones”, which seem to form the majority, only have 20kg warheads. Not much.
      
      Sure, you wouldn’t want one going off next to you, but 20kg does not cause a lot of damage.
      
      In comparison, the V1 flying bomb warhead was about 850kg – so 42 times as much.

      Why should we assume that the attack was a defeat for Iran?
      Firstly, who publicly announces accurate figures of their casualties during wartime? Nobody, that’s who. there is no advantage to it. Similarly, why publicly announce accurate information about targets hit and damage sustained? that information would be of advantage to the enemy. Stories will always be spun to the teller’s advantage.
      Also here’s another thing to consider, the figures are always going to be highly speculative but an Iranian attack for ~$20B causing an Israeli response of ~$1.5B seems reasonable.

  But in 2024 no NZ Super team has a powerful tight 5. The likes of Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Corey Flynn etc etc have gone.

There is a big change in the way people are working.

Commercial leases are often the biggest cost for a business, after wages, and with more people working from home and only doing one or two days in the office the office space is often underutilised.

It’s rare and almost impossible to buy your own office in town. You almost always pay a large scale landlord.

The cost of commercial space is vastly more expensive than apartment costs.

So my question is why in the business precinct should a person be allowed to work from home and use 1/3 of their home for business.

But you cannot buy an apartment or house and use that place for commercial offices if you don’t live there.

Eg. If you live there and have a corporate office with 4 other staff that’s fine. If you don’t live in the building and all 4 of you come in to do your work it is not fine.

Tonight’s Seven sharp TV show was playing in the background.

Topic was our high immigration numbers and why and where from people are coming. Some expert spouted on about our governments covid response , attractiveness, lifestyle etc…..

Then, they FINALLY mentioned the largest source of migrants… India by a large amount, then China.

Jeez, they’re not coming here due to our covid response… they’re coming because we have indoor toilets!! And in the case of Chinese, we’re not communist.

This is why people don’t like the media, they’re spinning a false story, trying to make out the (last) government were somehow special .

  NZ opens the door to the low skilled to increase pressure on strained infrastructure, from hospitals to schools. It sells its citizenship to fund our underperforming tertiary education, or, worse, even allows overseas agents in effect to sell this citizenship.
  
  Not so hot with our business-class immigration, either. Some rich immigrants from China under business schemes (you needed a million or two in the bank) must have been on the right side of the Chinese Communist Party.
