    We just have to accept that you have people on the right who are habituated to voting for National, socially liberal blue bloods who are thoroughly National, corporate and business types who are primarily about money and believe they can get a better deal under National, and then a great many essentially non-political middle class battlers who just want a tax cut and voted National as the mainstream option promising that.
    David Seymour is thoroughly demonised in the media as a radical and a racist, and in any case many rusted-on National voters will always think of ACT as some fringe party of interlopers and wierdos that they unfortunately have to do business with.
    The vast majority of people in that broad based grouping that elected the Coalition just want a return to their comfortable previous version of reality: soaring house prices, low inflation, comforting GDP numbers, and a BBQ with friends discussing the footy while enjoying a glass of Central Otago’s finest. A comfortable illusion where you don’t have to think about our mounting debt, balance of payments crisis, mass immigration, crumbling infrastructure, low productivity, and house-of-cards economy.

  1. The comment is 3rd hand hearsay. Even the first person who overheard the comment wasn’t clear on the reason.
  
  2. The Maori patient told him the story. But it doesn’t say the ethnicity of the patient who was told to get the money.
  
  “Whatever the true circumstances, the actual outcome was a message that flew around the Māori community that “if you don’t have the money, don’t bother turning up to the doctor”
  
  3. How does Anaru know which communities the story went around? Was there a study at his uni? No. Just more reckons.
  
  “With the clinical needs being equal, the most important criteria was the number of days on the waiting list. Other factors were then added including ethnicity, deprivation (based on decile ratings of your street) and whether you lived in a rural area.”
  
  3. So the issue isn’t race, it’s about money. Not all Maori are poor. And not all other races are wealthy. But he is stereotyping
  
  4. The equity adjuster prioritises people based on deprivation but not on their personal wealth. It’s based on the demographics of your neighbourhood?! The emergency housing tenants living in the Parnell hotel. I suppose they would be indexed for surgery as wealthy because they lived in a wealthy neighbourhood.
  
  Overall Anaru’s opinion piece fails to prove his point. It’s based on an overheard 2nd hand conversation. The opinion piece is racist. The equity adjuster is racist. And the deprivation equity adjuster is inaccurate.
  
  Surgery should only be prioritised on clinical need. End of.

    Apparently need is the first criteria. When a group of people have equal need, they go to a second criteria. I would have thought that would logically be time on the waiting list. You could make a case for consideration of ease of clinical support while waiting – that is, people with less access to a doctor are less likely to get appropriate monitoring and pain relief while waiting for surgery. That would likely give both rural dwellers and poor urbanites more priority.
    
    Not really clear why you would need to specify ethnicity, since an ethnic group with more need would already have qualified under the need, time & access criteria.

    On first look it would appear that the GP had seen this patient on other occasions and they had not paid.

      I’ve seen it happen at my gp’s a few times. Someone comes in to see the gp, reception will ask them if they can pay first, typically at that point they are a few visits in debt and not paying. The practices typically bends over backwards to help people who are struggling to pay.

  How can anyone take seriously excuses made for poor Maori health treatment take-up by saying they don’t know doctors socially?
  What are the “studies” which verify this as measurable and true?
  I’ve heard some stupid stuff about active responsibility for personal health care and outcomes, but that is ridiculous.

    I once got some coaching from my local GP….
    
    We’d both turned up at the local tennis club with our kiddie-winkles for the annual Parent-child tournament.
    
    Just as I stepped out to to make my first swipe at a return volley, I experienced an excruciating pain in my right calf. I yelped and came to a grinding halt.
    I called out to the local GP still playing on the court next to me…
    she laughed and told me I should have stretched first..and to put a bag of frozen peas on my leg when I got home.

      Family member lived in house in town where neighbour was a GP.
      From time to time there were social gatherings organised for those living in the vicinity. Sometimes the doctor attended but he had an absolute horror of being accosted by someone asking about medical matters. And if they did, he packed up his chilly bin and fold-up chair and went home.
      I have lived in what might be described as fairly remote rural for many years. Sometimes we had very little money to spend. But it never stopped us getting an appointment and making a trip to town to visit a doctor when required.
      You only get one life.

    Churchill was extremely personally chastened by his wrong call at Gallipoli. He lost his role as First lord of the admiralty and then quit his demoted office (and offers of other roles) to sign himself up (at age 40) to fight in the trenches of Belgium, where he survived a year as first a temporary Lt Colonel and then as a Major with many 10’s of excursions into no-mans land (at times so close to the German trenches he could hear them talking).

  The last 10 years she was doolally with dementia -essentially we lost her years ago.
  It’s not fair that a Pakeha woman had a lower lifespan than this Maori woman. In fact it’s downright racist. Who can I blame?

The DNC decides, and pretty strong chance that they will replace Biden in August anyway – they’ve shown in the past that they don’t actually care about democratic norms regarding Primaries in ensuring H. Clinton was selected ahead of Sanders via debate cheating and other anti-democratic manoeuvering.

  Shrug, far more Republicans voted against Trump in the GOP primaries.
  
  When it’s clear who’s going to win the primaries then it gives people the opportunity to make a protest vote.
  
  But when it’s all on the line in November there isn’t the luxury of a protest vote (sorry RFK) and so the voting behaviours are different.

Yes! Get it done by the fastest possible international expert team, probably the most cost effective one too.

Maybe it is a blessing in disguise that the anti-car activists defeated the original trenched option city bypass and 2nd Mt Vic tunnel, in the 1980’s, because now the need is so dire that we can do something truly first-world. 15 minute time saving, I can believe it.

  It just makes me despair that we had years of “let’s get Wellington moving”. What a 🤡 clown show.
  
  And of course we have Julie Ann Genter, as expected, telling us that such a road tunnel would be a tragedy. She wants “light rail”. Yeah we just had a 6 year cluster f*** in Auckland. She also wants “regional rail”. Yep we are all going back to the 1950s to use regional trains. 🙄

  She really thinks that the gigantic traffic snarl up at the Terrace Tunnel is going to be solved by public transport.
  
  With a couple of minor exceptions, the road layout in Wellington has not changed in 50 years. Look at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Their urban arterial road network has been transformed in just the last 30 years. In Sydney, this has been largely in the form of underground urban motorways through extensive tunnels.

    The thing about Wellington is it’s the end of the line.
    A multi billion tunnel out to Kilbirnie would take a few commuters out to that inhospitable, windswept suburb, what is essentially a secondary airport, a prison and some more minor suburbs on a peninsula with limited access.

        Apart from that my wife is petrified of flying in or out of that wretched airport so when we go to Wellington we motor down from Auckland
        BTW
        To construct the airport the MOW, or whoever, relocated a number of houses to reclaimed land on Rongotai Rd. I lived in one of them back in the seventies. I talked to someone who lived in an existing house along there and all these houses went passed their place.
        One day the truck transporting a house got stuck right outside their house. Unfortunately there was a family wedding reception in their house that day and the access to the property was blocked

        That trip from Airport > CBD in the mornings is terrible. I no longer do it. I’ve come close to missing appointments because of that congestion in the mornings. And no, I can’t bus/cycle/walk etc.
        Instead, I come down the night before and book a hotel close to my first appointment to avoid that traffic. More unnecessary cost imposed on people due to the continuing Wellington road saga.

      That secondary airport services over 600,000 people. If we could move all the airport-related traffic out of central Wellington then that would be a massive change – more transformative for Wellington than the Waterview tunnels have been for Auckland.
      
      Note that the “long tunnel” idea was originally part of LWGM, then dropped, and now only resurrected because the former head of transport planning at the Wellington Council has been pushing it as a private citizen. Good for him.

Consider the oft-used argument that if Islamic interests replaced the ethnic approach to this matter, how far would if proceed?
Sorry, Islamic people – it is just that many Islamic states do involve that religion in the running of entire countries and their inhabitants, and are examples – rightly or wrongly – of the extreme consequences of such a social engagement (to put it as politely as it may be put).

A person described as….. “a young man dressed in black whispering Alahoo Akbar” rushed at the Bishop of ‘The Church of the Good Sheppard’, viciously stabbing him in the face and neck.
He was immediately set upon by members of the congregation, with some reports on ‘X’ saying they cut his fingers off.

Now we hear the contracted cab companies don’t even turn up half the time and people are having to call Uber instead and pay for it themselves.

  My son was on ACC with a broken leg andsupposed to be using ACC taxis to get to school as he couldn’t get in and out of the bus. The taxi service (Blue Bubble) was useless. They often didn’t bother to turn up or were very late, and I expect it was because they were paid less on the ACC contract so cancelled if another fare was available. We complained to ACC and they allowed us to use Uber instead. The only minor drawback was having to pay the Uber ourselves and claim it back whereas the taxi company charged ACC directly in the rare event that they bothered to show up.

I wish to commend the Minister of Finance, Nicola Willis, for her use of one word in her interview with Michael Hosking this morning.
It was ‘receiving’.
How people are ‘receiving news.’
Not the god-awful cliche ‘consume’.
You cannot ‘consume news’ You don’t eat it or drink it.
You receive it by reading it, hearing it, or watching it.
I’m half-awake often when Hosking does these interviews.
But I was impressed by how Ms Willis gave answers that were clear and precise and decisive.
In a way she rescued the Media Minister, Melissa Lee, by spelling out clearly that the Government would not be riding like white knights in to rescue Newshub and TVNZ’s news operations.
Melissa Lee, it seems to me, tried to have it both ways.
She didn’t want to say that but didn’t have the heart to spell it out clearly because she knew the hacks pointing their mikes, phones, and cameras at her would tear her to pieces for not doing so.
And she was right.
Look at how upset and angry, soon-to-be jobless hacks have been blaming her for not coming to their rescue.
Jason Walls of NewstalkZB complains of her ‘bedside manner’.
Heather du Plessin-Allan made a similar criticism.
So have some talk-backers.
Ms Lee has seemed indecisive, confused, and confusing.
Was there a paper to Cabinet? Had Winston Peters stymied it? Was there a plan? And so on.
Melissa Lee might have been better served telling Gallery hacks desperate for an empathetic group cuddle and not being told the unpalatable truth that: ‘We’re not helping you. It’s not our business to bail you out. Sorry about that.’
Because she didn’t they’ve focused their rage and their grief on her seeing her as an easy target.
They need to grow up.

Some Japanese fishing boat aground in Hauraki Gulf. Were they fishing there at night? Is that why I didn’t catch any large size schnapper fishing yesterday??

I recall when Korean and Japanese fishing boats were trawling just outside the breakers on the WestCoast back in the 60’s and 70’s. Ended surf casting catches.

Am getting to hear that within the Public Service, so far announced, it is the lower levels who are particularly the young, who appear to be singled out for redundancy.
Can see why the unemployment figures are going to increase over a short period of time as many of those have few, or no real qualifications, to offer outside the Public Service.
The dole becomes easier and they can again vote Greens or Labour.

  The trouble is it is the more senior people who protect their jobs. So when a senior Minister called for ‘heads to roll’ in the old Ministry of Works, the only heads to roll were those of a few relatively junior staff. The Commissioner’s (CEO’s) head should have rolled.

    the whole things has been a balls up- 2,500 public servants were employed in the last 6 mnths before the change of Government. At last count the redundancies were around 1,200?
    
    So to sum up the Govt says to the Ministry heads (the very people who had been hiring 6 mnths out from an election) -trim 6% – so the bosses go after the low hanging fruit and possibly some of the 2,500 that have just been employed (no doubt with redundancy clauses in the employment contracts). Like someone suggested- a group should be set up to assess what outputs each Ministry puts out, ask is if it adding value- if not- can the position/Ministry.

      That is not a safe assumption. If the government was serious they would have commissioned an Expenditure Review Committee on Day 1. Get all the cutting over with in the first budget.
      
      It is more likely that the momentum for reducing the public service will fizzle out. Sadly the cuts to date have hardly put a dent in the problem. I know the story gets tiresome but think Ministry of Education. It needs a 50 percent cut.

  Under normal circumstances funding is through advertising.

Their online platform brings in a decent turn over, but the print isn’t. Wouldn’t be surprised if they end up dumping the papers and moving completely online.

I hope that DPF has a specific item on Stuff providing news to Warner. Effectively that means there will be four major newsrooms in New Zealand (NZME, RNZ, Stuff and TVNZ). The two private newsrooms covering both print and radio.
Of the four, Stuff is always rumoured to be the financially most insecure. Maybe this deal provides Stuff greater financial security. Warner’s presumably had some interest in the viability of Stuff, and did their due diligence.
Personally I think it is quite important that Stuff survives, even though it seems to be loathed by many Kiwibloggers. Going down to just three newsrooms, two being state owned and one private would not be a good outcome. I know some here would like to see RNZ and TVNZ privatised (or alternatively not funded) but I am pretty sure everyone here knows that is not going to happen. It is not in the coalition agreement, and it is certainly not a fight that National would want to embark on.
