  While that guy was doing a great job clearing the rampant Taiwanese cherries he is right out of order poisoning the mature Eucalypts. They’re a valued and historic feature of Kerikeri, were widely planted (not “weeds”) to help provide shelter and shade to a unnaturally barren area that had been cleared of bush by the Maoris.
  
  The dead and dying trees are now a serious, and expensive, hazard problem. He’s no hero; his poisoning activities are certainly not generally supported around here.

    Poisoning the Eucalyptus trees was taking things a bit far, however they’re dangerous trees as they mature, inclined to drop limbs on hot days and the most likely trees to take out power during high winds.
    It’s the other weeds that are rampant in government reserves he deserves credit for dealing too.

Set up in 1975, when there were very few Maori in Parliament, it was largely intended as a safeguard for their interests, and a guarantee of their voice. Today, Parliament contains a huge number of Maori, miles more than their 17% of the population warrants. They are in all parties and have seven seats designated specially for Maori. Together, they can be relied on to defend Maori interests.

  The bigger question is really this:
  Are there really “Maori interests” that are distinct from other people’s interests?
  If so, what are they?
  
  I was not in NZ in 1975, but as I understand it, conditions were improving for Maori up to that point and, since 1975 (or so) things have seemed to get worse.
  
  At the end of the day, we (well the decent ones any way), want the same basic things: a way to earn a reasonable wage, put a reasonable roof over our heads and a plate on the table. We want our kids to get a reasonable education and have reasonable prospects in life.
  
  Are those not common interests promoted by Western values?
  
  We also want some liberty to pursue those cultural interest that are of interest to us, be those Morris dancing, Maori culture, hunting or bird watching.
  
  Again, don’t Western liberal values allow for that?
  
  It seems to me that the attempts to re-Maorify Maori has not been beneficial except to an elite.

    That depends on your ‘world view’. For many Maori, their interests are by definition separate from other folk.
    
    Every day you can find reports of Maori referring to “our people”.

      I suggest that the average productive Maori has little interest in it (hence almost no Maori are bothered to learn their language).
      
      The reports are constructed by the elites and troughers who gain from a system that pays them vast amounts because they are apparently “different”.
      
      The average Maori does not gain through special Maori Health Authorities etc. But the fat cat bureaucrats do.
      
      The other people that gain from this are the scumbag gangs who use Maoridom as a shield.

        And I don’t blame them either.
        
        There are certainly many white “Silent Tories”, who feel pressured into keeping quiet.
        
        I expect there’s even more pressure to keep your mouth shut if you’re a Maori “Silent Tory”.
        
        In some ways this is a shame. It means that those (mostly more successful I would think) Maori silent Tories are not acting as positive role models influencing others.
        
        But for them personally, it is completely understandable. No good comes from having your children bullied at school etc for “acting white”. Rather just “act white” out of sight of other Maori in your own home or amongst your white friends.
        
        This concept of different “communities” based on race is a myth. They don’t really exist.
        
        A Maori doctor and a Mongrel Mob member are not in the same community just because they have a similar racial profile.
        
        I saw the same in South Africa. Black professionals didn’t associate with garden workers because they’re all Zulus (or whatever). Nope, they’re far more likely to have been friends with white professionals.

      Nowhere is this more evident than with the use of the terms “Māori” and “Pakeha”. Essentially this refers to one group and the rest of the population of the planet as distinct from that one group which is incidentally, a minute speck akin to fly dirt on the radar scopes of most of the world.
      Personally, I have an objection to being referred to as “not Māori”, happy to be a New Zealander born & bred, not happy being European, happy to be of Scottish/Irish heritage and that’s about it.
      Note: the language I was educated in, in this country does not use macrons and neither do I. They are a creature of someone else’s interference in my script.

        Ethnically you most certainly are a European, because your ancestors come from Europe therefore your heritage is European (there’s no such thing as an “ethnic New Zealander). Given that it was Europeans who founded and built NZ it would be a shame if you are not proud of that.
        
        No one with any self respect uses the word “pakeha” (a meaningless, made up word in a language that isn’t our own) to label themselves. I’m a NZ European – and proud of it.

    Easy welfare, especially the state paying hopeless women to have babies as a career has been incredibly destructive to lower socio economic sections of all western countries. NZ Maori included. The harvest of this has been huge increases in abused kids with hopeless welfare-bound outlooks and high rates of criminality as they grow into adulthood.

    Totally agree it should have been disestablished / shut down when it had no more historical claims to consider. Since historical claims ended the tribunal has tried every devious action it can to find a way to keep it going so it can continue to keep the tribunal members snouts in the trough, fleece the taxpayer and rark up other maori and pseudo maori radicals to keep the maorification movement going.

  Of course the Waitangi Tribunal should be abolished – but it won’t be, at least not by any of our current politicians. Seymour talks a good game, but I seriously doubt whether ACT will ever be the largest party in government – but then until a few years ago, all the pundits were standing around waiting for it to die. No-one expected they would end up with 8 MP’s so who knows?

    Funny things are happening in the world of politics ( in the west anyway)
    
    There is a noticable trend among electorates away from the old and tired ‘trust us centrists , we know what we’re doing ”
    
    I think Brexit and Trump are examples of electorates fed up and wanting real change ( whether they get it is another matter)
    
    Ireland , whom we for some very odd reason like to compare ourselves to is actually on the precipice ( if polling is correct) of putting in the terrorists as a majority . Again partly due to disillusionment with the old lot.
    
    Europe too and I suspect it’s due to partly at least to rampant uncontrolled immigration .
    
    Holland , so often touted as the epitome of the progressive liberals , largest party ; Geert Wilders .
    
    Sweden Democrats likewise in that beacon of “progess” that the socialists always lauded .
    
    Not to mention Italy , Hungary and most importanty Germany and France where so called extreme and once fringe parties are close to power.

    It all depends on how the next election plays out.
    If the current alliance makes it through to a second term I expect to see more fire works.
    
    If the next government is formed by Act and National I think the status quo will survive. National in its current form needs Act and NZ First to deflect.
    
    Form is temporary but class is permanent. This statement may well draw some ire and verbiage.

  They dont actually need extra money for their own border, the problem isn’t cash its entirely a policy issue. The US went from one of the lowest levels of border crossings under Trump to the highest (?) almost overnight. The changes were
  
  1. Implementation of catch and release for a trial to be held some time in the distant future (years). Including flights to the city of your choice, complimentry cellphone etc.
  
  2. Removal of remain in Mexico policy where aliens were returned to mexico to await processing. This had the effect of Mexico strenghtening its southern border.
  
  3. Dem citys pushing a sanctuary city policy and Biden talking about ‘no one being turned away’.
  
  Essentially Biden put out the welcome mat and un surprisingly people are coming.
  
  No funding is required, no law changes are required. Biden just needs to start enforcing the existing laws and resume Trumps policies.

  How much of this is cash and how much is in the form of arms and ammunition?
  
  If foreign military aid is in the form of munitions then most of the value stays in the USA and is just donated to the local military industrial complex – ie the swamp dwellers of congress etc just added a pile of money to their own share portfolios.
  
  For example a Javelin missile has a price of around $US200k. It costs under $10k in materials to actually build one (ie. that is the marginal cost). The other $US190k go into profits.

        Indeed. I call it “trickle-up” economics. It’s when the govt excessively taxes the public and inflates the currency and transfers the gains to the corporations that are in cahoots with the deep state.
        
        I still can’t understand why lefties prefer this over trickle-down economics. I feel like they’ve been brainwashed to hate any kind of capitalism and to love any kind of socialism, even if that socialism rewards the corporations and punishes themselves.

      The average Joe just gets worse off as the nation slides deeper into debt.

      Har har har… Whether you are pro-Putin or anti-Putin, the facts are the same – Russia has a huge stockpile of arms and ammo.
      
      That seems to be especially true for the main fodder of the battlefield – howitzer shells. If you can’t match the opposition shell for shell then it is hard to control a battle field. The USA and Europe only have a small number of shells available.
      
      If they fire shells at the same rate, then during a week Ukraine runs out of shells on Monday and Russian artillery is unopposed the rest of the week. Oh, and on top of that the Russian howitzers have longer range.
      
      Napoleon is supposed to have said: God is on the side with the better artillery. Yes, things have moved on quite a lot since, but the basic concept still holds true.

        Too many soldiers are dying and this will continue at pace now that the Ukrainians have access to more munitions, better air defences and better delivery systems. A collapse of Ukrainian forces appears unlikely.
        
        There comes a point where body bags and a dwindling economy speak louder than ideology.
        
        Putin needs continued support from citizens to wage this war.
        
        And of course the Americans will do what favours them best. It is by design. “Trump” willing or not.

  The actual aid is nowhere near that amount. They are sending surplus stuff that is mostly scheduled to be dumped as past its use by date and specifying the new price. Even the much talked about ATACMS missiles are in the process of being retired in favour of the replacement PrSM missiles which started delivery to the US Army last December.

  Again, it should be net taxpayers, not all the population which includes babies, children and illegal aliens who obviously don’t pay taxes in any meaningful way. For the US, the vast majority get more out than they put into the system. I would guess 30m or 10% of the population are actually net tax contributors, so add a zero to your guesstimate.

        True Steve which makes me wonder where the Trump flags came from that showed up at the protests in Wellington. Funny thing was that when they were approached by my friend and questioned as to what they were doing there and what relevance they thought they had the young well dressed , casual but smart, men became very nervous and fidgety and had nothing to say.   I have heard nothing back after I alerted the Council to Bill Padding at Pikes Point Transfer Station.
  
  Therefore I am copying in the Newsdesk at the New Zealand Herald, as a story about blatant overcharging of $243, which was revised to $87 after I paid it and realised that I had been stung ,at the Pikes Point Weigh Station, may be in the Public interest.
  
  I had to push hard to get the staff to issue a Refund (attached) that clearly shows that I was overcharged.
  
  Can the Council explain a/. How was an incorrect weight Invoiced ?
  b/. Inform me whether an audit of Contractor Staff and weighing systems has taken place to prevent Fraud.
  
  Please note that I plan to pursue this with the Media if no decent explanation is forthcoming. Corruptio at Pikes Point easily extends into Council Operations as Council Trucks are weighed there daily, is the Council also routinely being overcharged ?.
  
  As a twist on the story below, highlighting rubbish dumped outside a Transfer Station, when a member of the Public has been corruptly overcharged, as in my case, fly-tipping can be seen to be morally justified.

Sue Neureuter, trustee of one of the Noises Islands and Cath Handley, Chair of the Waiheke Community board point out what we all know, namely the Hauraki Gulf is severely degraded. What they both fail to reveal is that both are prepared to compromise democratic control of natural assets in exchange for marine protection.

Both are advocates of a cogovernance model of marine protection. This is to split control of a protected zone 50/50 iwi and local communities. This is also endorsed by Legasea a conservation minded fishing advocacy group. Initiatives to implement these models have generated opposition.

These zones are shallow short term thinking. None of these individuals are prepared to confront the moral blackmail being exerted by iwi who are more interested in power and privilege than genuine conservation. They are “useful idiots” who allow their genuine concern to be exploited.

Far better are no take reserves as advocated for by Friends of the Hauraki Gulf and marine scientists.

New Zealand’s record on marine conservation is a disgrace. We have 0.4% of our coast under protection whereas in Europe the average is 30%. Maori interest in control of our coast is the primary culprit holding up real protection.

  In my view it is a bad appointment for two reasons.
  
  Firstly Otago University has financial problems that need sorting. Enough said. 😳
  
  Secondly, I don’t think that Grant Robertson has the instincts to uphold academic freedom. Although he would not be alone. See Massey University.
  
  It does beg the question of whether any ex politician should be appointed. Would I have found the appointment of Steven Joyce a good appointment? I guess it depends what the university is looking for. Steven Joyce would right the financial ship 😅. Do they want that? I guess only the Council can explain the appointment. Good luck with that.

    NZ universities have slid further down the rankings year after year.
    
    It is now getting to the stage where the only technical university worth going to is in Auckland.
    
    Perhaps that’s a good thing. Having multiple universities dotted through NZ might have been a good thing in the old days when travel was expensive and communications were poor. But now travel is cheap and communications are good.
    
    Maybe all we need is one good university.

      I think it is a good model to have smaller specialist universities in subjects such as soil science, veterinary medicine etc. As I understand it, Massey filled that role well for decades. Until some folk at Massey decided to branch out into gender studies, fat studies and politics.

        The lefties infect the university governing bodies then manipulate everything to their own ends.
        
        For example:
        * In many universities people studying sciences are required to take at least one arts subject. They say this is to ensure that the students are “well rounded” or such. In reality it is to keep arts lecturers employed. You will not see any reciprocal arrangement requiring arts students to take mathematics or chemistry to ensure they are “well rounded”.
        * Emphasis is placed on getting “bums on seats”. This generally comes at the cost of reducing quality.
        * Science and engineering etc generally require expensive assets (suitable buildings, lab equipment etc). These are left to rot and the money is rather put into more left-leaning nonsense of interest to arts students.
        
        Eventually the science dies.

        It would be way better to admit reality and move the Otago School of Medicine to Christchurch. As it is, their satellite campus at Christchurch hospital is far more important than what they have going at Dunedin Hospital. It would make far more sense to just move the whole thing.

  When I bought my house back in 2013 I went along to a number of auctions. There would be crowds of people back then and prices we’re going through the roof with ultimate buyers predominately Chinese
  I muttered about foreigners with money buying our houses.
  However last year when I has cancer I saw three hematologists who were Chinese with kiwi accents
  Maybe they can afford the houses because they put in the hard yards at school and med school and eventually earn the top salaries.
  Someone once told me Irish families in NZ made their kids get a job after school whereas the Chinese sent their kids off to extra-curricula classes

  The usual security measures are the security check before boarding the aircraft and then cabin crew training. As long as the unruly passenger does not have anything that can be used as a weapon, the unruly passenger can be fairly readily overpowered and restrained by cabin crew with the help of other passengers. The crew have access to cable ties and other restraint devices. A bottle of duty free Teachers whiskey or similar can serve as a makeshift baton (and was once used on a Air NZ flight to deal with a troublemaker). That would teach the troublemaker a lesson.

        I have long been opposed to migrants being stripped of their citizenship. I think that such a threat creates an implied system of “two classes of citizen” which is not desirable. However I am coming to the view that some people should lose their citizenship if they retain citizenship of another country and commit the most serious crimes. Basically murder, rape, hijacking etc. I don’t know how you would encode those crimes in law but I am sure it can be done.

  As for the common cold, I think we need to apply common sense. If I had a coworker in an office with s ‘sniffly nose’, no problem. If I had a coworker with a heavy cold, sneezing, coughing, and clearly unwell, I would be quite unhappy.
  
  So if a kid has a streaming nose and is coughing all over the place, then no, he or she should not be at school.
  
  Anyway I think this debate about what constitutes a “sick” child is a distraction. the problem is not sick kids being away from school. It is thousands of kids being away from school for no good reason at all.

Actually remember the teacher pulling out the lice comb and checking every student, then those with it sent to the nurses office to have their parents called to come get them. Also remember a teacher in primary school being off with the flu because the teacher that came into the class to take over called the class a bunch of sheep, everyone baa’d at her, she left and never returned.

    My sisters all went to the same school and one of them told me recently she thought the nuns were tough on the girls and favoured the boys
    That was St Joseph’s and the non-Catholics, who we didn’t talk to, went to Waimataitai School, which had the murder house; so it was double terror getting your teeth drilled
    We didn’t miss a day of school for a mere sore throat, but my future brother in law contracted rheumatic fever, which remained undiagnosed until his heart gave out in his early sixties

    In June he punched, kicked, slapped and pulled her hair, and in September of that same year, he punched her multiple times to the head in an argument over the payment of bills.
    
    The following month he again punched her multiple times to the head, and the assaults continued in December 2021.
    
    In June 2022, he again punched, kicked, and slapped her so hard that it caused her to lose a tooth. He also strangled and shook her.
    
    The next month he slapped her again and kicked her in the stomach as she lay on the floor.
    
    In the assault in August 2022 he pushed her onto the pavement where she struck her head and lost consciousness.
    
    The assaults continued each month through to November.
    
    In January 2023, while on bail, the pair argued and he again slapped her and he began packing up his belongings.
    
    She tried to calm him down and apologised but instead, Dhaliwal kicked her multiple times in the stomach and legs then pinned her down on the bed and strangled her as she struggled to breathe.
    
    He then punched her several times, strangled her again and repeated that at least three times.
    
    Dhaliwal then picked up an electric fan and swung it at her. The guard then fell off and it exposed the blades, which were operating at the time.
    
    He then punched her “really hard” in the chest, causing her considerable pain.

    Basically what they are saying is that those who are worse off before an event are likely to be less prepared for it and to have fewer resources to help themselves after it.
    
    This is not really news and I think most of the answers lie in making common cause with others, rather than dividing yourself from them. For example, arguing for more provision of unisex toilet and shower cubicles, rather than male access to female facilities.

    When GG gets her pathetic sentence (almost guaranteed), there are going to be allegations of special rules for politicians. Brownlee being seen in public like this won’t help.
    
    Whether or not there is political interference is not all of it. There should also be no perception of a possibility of interference.

Journo calls it a ‘fine’. this is factually incorrect as only councils can issue parking fines. It is actually a parking invoice that was issued. If the journo had bothered to 5 minutes of research, they would have discovered that there are some conditions imposed on parking companies as to what they can charge people who have overstayed in their carparks and there is a certain wording you can use to get the invoice waived very quickly.

Basically, in this instance, Wilsons can only charge for any actual losses they have incurred and any reasonable admin fees. Now if the carpark is full, then they have lost out on a paying customer, if it is almost empty, they haven’t lost anything. When my wife overstayed in an empty Wilsons carpark, I to pay for the actual overage of the time she was there and a small fee to cover admin costs, but I also pointed out that there were no timestamps on their pictures, the parking area was empty, and their actual losses were zero dollars.

Oh, and also get your rego hidden on the NZTA website, it only takes a couple of minutes and it means that these guys can’t send you letters to your home address.

  I think you are wrong on two counts:
  1. While ‘penalties’ are unenforceable under contract law, ‘liquidated damages’ are enforceable even if the quantum is roughly calculated on the back of a cigarette packet and included in contract terms before the event.
  2. NZTA will provide ownership details of a rego if there is adequate reason and upon payment of an appropriate fee.
  
  If people do not take paying such damages seriously they would risk being towed or clamped in the future. Take your pick.

The government will soon be introducing revised three strikes legislation (source: PR from the Associate Minister for Justice).

This sounds good, except that the legislation will “extend the use of the “manifestly unjust” exception to allow some judicial discretion to avoid very harsh outcomes and address outlier cases.”

This worries me because, under the previous legislation that presumably had tighter controls on the “manifestly unjust” exception, judges appeared to be over-keen to use the exception to save some really dreadful criminals from sentences they truly deserved.

A “manifestly unjust” judgement should not be the default position.

Very impressed to see Luxon unwinding the cluster that was the credit contracts act that literally tanked the housing market overnight back in November 2021.

Our household lost $600k due to that, as we put our house on the market the week those rules came in and virtually overnight absolutely no one could get loan financing. It took us over a year to sell our house and the one offer we got was $600k lower than market indications before that blunt instrument legislation was bought in.

So where now is the piece of cr*p that implemented that appalling piece of legislation ie David Clark -now a trougher on the Otago University council. About par for the course.

  Yeah I was a little bit caught by that as well, though I’ll blame my own lack of attention also.
  
  I told my tenants I wanted to sell, and prefer to sell in that Spring. Similar houses were going around $1M.
  
  Tenants (of 11 years) said they were finishing a MBA thesis and could it wait until early the following year. Which I agreed to, and the rest is history. I was out about $200k

  My rates are based on a CV of $1.4mil on 1-June 2021
  I should have appealed because the I’m sure the actual value based on what it would have sold for would not have been in that ballpark, but who knows?
  The point being a house is worth what it sells for, not the CV, or what an agent tells you or your own guess.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee have unveiled a revised Three Strikes law, which was abolished under the Labour Government.

Luxon said the Government has a target to have 20,000 fewer victims of violent crime by 2029.

I had a routine email inquiry with a government agency today.

I got a reply “One of our kaimahi will be in touch.”

Now maybe I am slow to learn, but I did need to google that to find out its meaning. 🙁

Sometimes I wonder if I am the only person in New Zealand who has this mental jarring whenever I receive these emails. 🙁 because clearly if the majority of folk had to use google to figure out what just happened, there would be complaints and this stuff would stop. Right?

EDIT – since the change of government I detect a doubling down of this ‘mixed language’ communication.

  Interesting: I listen to Hosking every morning and have noticed that for the last 6 months or so very few of his callers/guests ever use a maori greeting, except for a few die-hard Uni-types and a few women who are in charge of taxpayer-funded crap organisations.
  Most of them seem to have got the message.
  
  Of course there are still radio ads which include the odd token maori word but I just turn it off for a few minutes and deny the advertisers their airtime.

  I am not volunteering to investigate this, but I very much doubt that there is any country in the world where communications from government agencies require the recipients of the communications to use google translate to figure out the message – where such recipients are the speakers of the majority official language of the nation.

    If you have to translate a email from the govt it is obviously unimportant and can be marked as spam , which usually stops more coming as well. I follow this practice and my in box is very manageable now.

  I don’t understand the “less than a decade between them” reference. One got life with a minimum of 12 years, and the other 3 years plus for manslaughter. The 12 year minimum period seems low for such a brutal attack, but if the PoS carries on like that in prison, he will be very unlikely to get out at the minimum period.
  As an aside, New Zealand courts are pretty soft on sentencing; a similar killing in the UK saw a life sentence with a minimum of 17 years imposed.
