  According to my phone it is:
  
  “Administrative Professional Day”
  
  Once upon a time we had these amazing people called secretaries. Remember them? They used to do a lot of very useful stuff in the office and we even had a “Secretaries Day” where people would bring them chocolate and flowers to show how much their work was appreciated.
  
  But secretaries for some reason decided that the title of secretary was demeaning. I don’t know why. A parliamentary secretary for example is quite a powerful person. Anyway they decided that they didn’t want to be called secretaries any more. They wanted to be called other things like “office managers” or “administrative officers” or “executive assistants”. So now hardly anybody is called a secretary and the word is slowly disappearing.
  
  But people still want a day to appreciate their work and bring them chocolates and stuff. Thus “administrative professional day”. Anyway, whatever the people in your office want to be called, this might be a good day to show them some appreciation.

  We need to end all of the ‘talk and opinion’ commisions and ministries. Things like; HRC, Womans affairs, Childrens commission, Maori affairs, Ministry for PI etc
  
  They all are simply tax payer funded lobby groups. When a left wing govt is in power they simply provide endorsement for policy. When a right wing govt is in power they are attack dogs and used as sound bits by the msm.
  
  They acheive nothing of significance for vast amounts of money. The HRC which should be a serious organisation is busy arguing that x or y are basic human rights but when actual rights are removed, such as blocking NZers from returning to the country during covid, they are nowhere to be found.
  
  The sad thing is that National doesn’t have the balls to actually make this sort of significant change. Now is the best opportunity to do so, perhaps ever.

  I’ve told this story before but @daphna_nz & I met with HRC Commissioner Paul Hunt & some advisors a few years ago on behalf of @SpeakUp4WomenNZ.
  It was utterly demoralising as Hunt dismissed everything we raised about women’s rights & lesbian rights. I ended up in tears as Hunt told me that I was wrong, men could declare themselves lesbians & there was no way we could protect ourselves & our spaces despite the HRA saying otherwise. He said to my face with derision “some lesbians have penises”.

I anticipate that David Seymour will avert any criticism of hypocrisy by calling for the immediate liberalization of ANZAC DAY shop trading hours. It is outrageous that New Zealanders will be denied the opportunity to shop till they drop tomorrow morning simply because a tiny proportion of the population wish to mark some failed battle that occurred thousands of miles away over 100 years ago. Come on, David, set your sights on ANZAC DAY and then you’ll be free to tackle that final bastion CHRISTMAS DAY. No day should be a no shopping day, should it, David!

      No it’s not. Christmas and Easter are purely religious holidays. Anzac Day commemorates our forebears who fought and died in appalling conditions in the belief that they were fighting for freedom. Those poor men suffered unimaginable conditions for us. So many of them were just boys. We owe it to them to stop, think, and give them the respect they deserve.
      My wife and I own a small business and we wouldn’t dream of opening on Anzac Day .

I have watched the video. Sure it is violent. But should it be banned?

This is what happens when you get mission creep in censorship. New Zealand has a Censor. A video needs to be fairly horrific to be banned.

However Australia now has an “esafety Commissioner”. She has alleged that this video will “cause irreparable harm”. That is when I know it is a scam. Because clearly this video will in no way cause irreparable harm.

BTW the Commissioner is seeking a global ban on this video, not just in Australia.

  It is hardly a beheading video or objectionable. His knife malfunctioned in any case, the spring-mechanism did not even initially deploy as otherwise this would have been a murder.

      There is fault on both sides. Removing a trash bin from a dog park seems dumb. However the dog owners should take the dog poo home.
      
      Sadly, New Zealand is not Japan. I never saw a public rubbish bin in all of Tokyo. I did not see any litter either.

        Sarin gas was released via explosives left in public trash cans.
        
        Twelve people died and 50 (seven of who subsequently died) were severely injured.
        Nearly a thousand other people were temporarily blinded or given vision problems.
        
        Thirteen of the cult members, its leader Shoko Asahara included, were convicted over the attacks and sentenced to death.

      Garbage collection is a critical service from councils and should be impacted by cost cutting as a last resort. It’s ridiculous to insist that dog owners pick up after their dogs, but then remove the rubbish bin they have been using for ages, forcing them to walk around with a dog poop bag in their hands.
      Council are 100% to blame for this response from dog owners, and if I still had my dogs I’d probably do the same thing in protest to the bin removal. Did council actually review the bin use and only remove bins that are minimally used? I don’t think so. From what I read around this they marked every 1 in X bins as being removed without any analysis of whether the bin was actually needed or not.

        Had a similar argument recently when someone had a go on social media about people leaving poo bags on top of a chocka bin.
        
        All the other bins in the area had been recently removed and it was a long weekend, the council had not emptied the bin. I pay an extra $150 per year to have dogs and I get nothing for it other than a bin at this particular park which is a few mins into my hour plus walk. If the council chooses not to empty it or to have a small one only that is not my problem. It’s not because I don’t pay for it – it’s because they waste the money on things that have nothing to do with me.

Lloyd Burr’s patsy interview with Hipkins on the Am Breakfast Show this morning is hilarious. He allows Hipkins to wander off topic and say anything he likes about the inadequacies of the current government completely unchallenged. In fact he is nodding along in agreement most of the time. You get the feeling that Burr, knowing he will be out of a job in a couple of months, just can’t be bothered making any attempt to hide his left wing political bias any longer. Any residue professionalism when interviewing politicians appears to have been jettisoned in the dying days of the AM Show.

I remember when

Just reading article in wattsupwiththat about the flooding in Dubai.
I was very surprised to find that the actual rainfall was 6.26 inches in 24 hours.
So just a ‘wet’ month in winter in the Manawatu.
Then I thought of the rainfall in the Maasai Mara during the ‘rainy’ season.
Didn’t seem that extreme if out of character.

    Goat Island Marine Reserve. Friend of ours went for a dive there. Wardens paid him a visit. Friend had a nice snapper in his ice bin that he had caught elsewhere, miles away from the reserve. Fined $1000. Lucky he was able to keep his fishing gear and boat.

      For the reasons I gave above I don’t trust the NZ police to exercise such an option with the required level of good judgment.
      
      Further, the police firearm rules give a great deal of discretion to officers as to when they may be used, and it is certainly not required to get prior authorisation from a superior:
      
      Members may carry police issue firearms on the person when there is clear and specific evidence that a risk of encountering any of the circumstances referred to in General Instruction F61 exists. Carriage is to be authorised by a District Commissioned Officer or NCO or Police Communications Centre Commissioned Officer or NCO when practical to do so. If an authorising officer is not available members may exercise their own discretion, but shall advise their supervisor at the first reasonable opportunity.

      So in a situation where an officer needs their firearm urgently they may certainly get it and use it. It’s not proper that an officer who is in such need should have to contact and explain the situation to their superior while an immediate threat exists, and they don’t.

It concludes that doctors from overseas are so stressed with adapting to New Zealand culture that they leave. If true that is shocking. However this study blames the doctors. They just need more training on the Treaty and better te reo lessons. They need cultural support dealing with Maori patients.

Even just 10 years ago I would have been confident that a doctor from the UK, USA, Australia and South Africa would have had few problems adapting to New Zealand “culture”.

  It is absurd insisting that a doctor from South Africa needs cultural training to be able to cope with a multi-cultural society.
  
  Doctors in South Africa have all dealt with multiple different cultures and languages their whole lives.
  
  To get a medical degree in South Africa requires that you are fluent in both language and cultural sensitivities with at least two different languages/cultures.
  
  For example, if you are an English speaking medical student at University of Cape Town then you are required to become fluent in being able to have a medical doctor/patient discussion in either Afrikaans or Xhosa, but preferably both. For example, if you are already fluent in Afrikaans when you turn up, then you are required to learn Xhosa. This includes various cultural issues such as knowing the accepted ways of handling taboos (eg. discussing menstruation with a Xhosa woman). This is a two years of course work in the classroom and language labs as well as years of hands-on work in the hospitals.
  
  There it is a requirement for being able to do your job. ie. How can a doctor and a patient have a useful conversation without a shared language?
  
  This is a way higher bar than NZ where, let’s face it, 99% of Maori would not be able to hold any discussion (let alone a medical discussion) in te reo Maori.

    Due to family circumstances I have gone to several tangi in the last two years, all in the North. At these tangi, there are literally hundreds of Maori, especially the kohanga reo generation, who are accompolished speakers or are clearly comfortable with the language.
    
    Just about all Maori under 35 who work in education and in the wider public service will have a respectable level of knowledge. A very large percentage of Maori who go to University (a degree being virtually mandatory to be in the core of the public service) will have included te reo among their university papers and they will be active in the cultural life of the university marae.
    
    That’s why Steve Otto’s quixotic quest has no change of success. The younger generations have moved way beyond him.

      On the flip side, my wife has supervised NCEA papers for several years. Invariably she will tell me how sorry she feels for the teachers of Maori, due to the high number of pupils who don’t turn up for the exam, or walk out as soon as the minimum time allowed has expired (either 30 minutes or 45 minutes, from memory).
      
      This is in a large Auckland school. It’s hardly surprising that you are encountering a good number of people at tangi in the North who are proficient in the Maori language. And good on them. If they have that interest, then why not.
      
      However, returning to Benedict’s comment, what relevance does that have to doctors having difficulties adapting to New Zealand culture? I simply cannot see why a doctor should have to undertake intensive training to understand some arcane nuances of the Maori culture, in order to treat a patient effectively.
      
      I don’t know how other people approach their medical practitioners, but not once has the question “will this doctor/specialist/surgeon understand my cultural needs” been at the top of my mind when going for an exam or treatment …

      You misunderstand what I said, perhaps deliberately.
      
      * How many Maori could have a medical discussion in Maori? How many would understand better if they had their medical discussions in Maori rather than in English?
      
      * How many can only speak Maori and need Maori language doctors to work with?
      
      Sure there are many who can te-reo away in the Marae and funerals etc, but that is very different to medical (or other technical) discussions.
      
      If there really are any Maori who need medical consultation in Maori, then I suggest a few months of “cultural training” is insufficient for the foreign doctors (and for that matter, for medical students too). Instead they should have years of training like the doctors at the University of Cape Town. ie. Why should Maori speakers have a worse medical experience than Xhosa speakers in Africa?
      
      Of course the real reason is that there are no Maori who require medical examinations conducted in Maori language.

  I was born and educated in New Zealand, have lived most of my adult life in Asia, and quite frankly have difficulty adapting to the version of “New Zealand culture” that suddenly characterizes New Zealand’s foreign missions – i.e. embassies, consulates, NZTE offices, etc.
  
  You get invited to a function and nobody is allowed to touch the food until after Maori prayers have been said – or rather chanted, it’s all very hocus pocus. At some point everyone must participate in a Maori singalong. Presentations for local audiences, for whom English usually is a second language at best, are given in a bizarre mix of English and Maori, most of which I cannot follow. There is often minimal content besides lengthy explanations of Maori terminology. Baffled audience members will turn to ask in wonderment how much of it all I can actually understand.
  
  Visiting New Zealand delegations now endlessly pepper their English with Maori and expect everyone (i.e. myself as translator plus whatever bunch of locals they are hoping to wow over) to wait in patient awe while this too gets translated. The assumption is that the whole world is bursting with enthusiasm to learn more Maori, and would probably take Maori lessons over whatever the delegation is ostensibly selling.

    I can understand pushing the Maori angle for tourism etc where adding a twist of a cultural experience might be interesting.
    
    But for trade delegations etc? Naah. People wanting to invest into technology, trade etc would be thinking: How the hell will we be able to get anything done with these people?
    
    Having 5 minutes of haka and poi-waving at a dinner is fine. Injecting this “cultural” mumbo-jumbo into every interaction is not.
    
    Can you imagine every time a UK delegation wants to discuss an investment opportunity they first spend half an hour with Morris dancers etc?

  Not possible. Labour’s political power is derived by the Unions and the PSA is one of the biggest. The Bigger the bureaucracy, the more power Labour have.
  AND, because bureaucrats are mostly Lefties, the more there are, the more they can restrain any National lead Government.

Wellington to Hutt cycle way, projected cost was $90 million, current cost 💲311 million and rising. Add on the Hutt section another $70 million, which is more than four times the original estimated cost.
So it’s very generous of Whaka Kotahi to pay out what will be more than $400 million (due for completion in October) to get me to the Kahawhai fishing grounds, which is the rocks alongside Wellington Harbour.

    Well that makes no sense because the cycle way is on a much lower level, the storm surges at their worst are up and over the motorway. So protection from storms could never have been part of the original plan.

    From memory, the line is undermined by storm surges about once a decade, & is closed for about three days.

    I cycled along there to a job in Lower Hutt for a couple of extremely tedious months back in the seventies
    There was a cycle way then, but it was unusable due to the amount of rubbish
    The worst thing however was the southerlies coming across the harbour

  then it makes for good eating sliced and lightly fried in butter.
  
  so (1) Check the underside of the cap….. If it looks like a wettex sponge, then
  
  (2) check if the biggest ones have a brownish, shiny/slippery cap, then
  
  (3) get one of your friends of a Greek/Italian heritage to check if it is really a “Porcini”.
  
  (4) Are they growing under/near a pine, spruce or larch tree?
  
  If the yellow mushroom has gills under the cap (like ordinary mushroom), then either leave them where they are… or cut them off and dispose of them if they bother you…..
  The mushrooms(toadstools) are just the fruiting bodies of a fungus which is growing in the soil under your lawn.

      and handy tip….. watch the person who identifies an edible fungus eat them first….and wait 24 hours before you attempt to eat the same fungus.
      
      For foraged/wild fungi, I only eat mushrooms, horse mushrooms, porcini, jew’s ear, and small puffballs.
      
      I don’t trust anything else…..esp, magic mushrooms/blue meanies

Hmmm I was thinking of doing a bit more studying as I get a bit more spare time, starting with doing some post-grad in computer engineering.

It seems that woked-to-hell University of Canterbury does provide “Pūhanga Rorohiko”, but only to BEng level.

Sounds interesting. I assume that is computers built out of bits of shell and flax – a bit like 1800s Babbage machines built out of steel and brass etc.
