  According to the Census those who “identify” as Maori make up around 20% of the population. At the Elections the Maori Party got around 3% of the total vote. By my maths that means the Maori Party got the support of only 15% of those who “identify” as Maori assuming only those who “identify”as Maori and no Non-Maori voted for the Maori Party.
  The Maori Party only have a voice in the Parliament due to the historical and outdated Maori seats that should have been abolished at the introduction of MMP.
  Alas neither Labour nor the Nats are brave enough to abolish the Maori seats. Given the violent behaviour of the Maori Party and its supporters it is likely they would escalate the violence to civil war even though the vast majority including moderate Maori dont support the Maori seats.
  So we have a very small number of violent people holding the rest to ransom. I say at some point non-Maori probably lead by immigrants are going to rebel against the current situation and then the Government at the time will have a real problem on its hands.Watch this space.

    That should have been abolished with the introduction on universal male suffrage on 19 December 1879.
    
    The justification for Maori seats was that Maori historically did not own land therefore they were disadvantaged by the law that only land owners could vote. In 1879 that restriction went away – as did the need for this special rule for Maori.

        I’m not male so no, I am tall and yes quite proud of it. Happy with my hair colour too. You’re right that people shouldn’t be judged over immutable traits that they have no control over, but I reserve the right to be proud if my heritage and everything our culture built and achieved. If people are actively encouraged regarding pride in Maori culture why the hell shouldn’t Europeans be proud of ours?

      You could start adding all sorts of silliness to the end of your name, representing your ancestry which they do in stuff, which seems very weird. So, if you are of European decent you can put something like John Smith (Viking, Scotland, McDuff, England, Wales, New Zealand) or some similar f**kwittery like Maori seem to do here. If you a small percentage of Maori too, like most of them are you can add a bunch of spelling mistakes at the end as well.

    17.8% actually. No doubt Maori Party MPs can round it up to 20% as I suspect colonial maths aren’t a strong point.
    What % of that 17.8 actually have more Maori blood than non Maori. I suspect it’s a minority . Scrolling radio channels yesterday I came upon talkback discussion of yesterday’s protests. Newstalk ZB presenter read out 2 texts. One who loved Maori culture and had a DNA test that showed she had 2.5% Maori blood and obviously 97.5% non Maori blood so she registered as Maori on census. The other text was from someone with 0% Maori blood and they registered as Maori because they thought there might be benefits in doing so..

    Sensible Maori will not go within a `bulls roar’ of this proposed fiasco.
    
    The proposed Maori Parliament will mainly be made up from:
    Ngati Tamahere
    Ngati Willie Jackson,
    Ngati Mahuta – but not any other Tainui
    Ngati Tama Iti
    Ngatiess Debbie Ngarewa-Packer
    plus a few other whingers and moaners.
    
    Nga Tahu will not have anything to do with it either is my guess.
    
    A final question for Rawiri Waititi – show us the money because the current New Zealand Government (hopefully) will not be coughing up any dosh.

        I am seriously interested to know what happens if she did, then say another couple also decide to move over to TMP how does it work with MMP.
        TPM would have way over their percentage of seats as per their percentage of votes cast for parties, and those parties losing MPs have reduced percentages. That scenario makes a waka jumping bill a necessity.

        Kerekere was a list MP who stayed as an independent, Fighty was an electorate MP who jumped to the Maori Waka. Both changed their respective parties percentage without triggering any changes.
        I can’t see the greens alienating their racist votes by invoking the Waka jumping legislation against a Maori woman.

        I Would guess that they get way over 20% now. They get 50% of prisons and more than that of police and judiciary, 50% of welfare, a large portion of health more than 20%, they are pandered to over conservation. Plus they get Maori affairs, equal access to roads and other resources. The only areas I can think where they get less than their “share” is tertiary Ed and superannuation

  The ideas of the late 1970s and early 80s: the labelling of NZ society as institutionally racist, the discovery of Treaty “principles” and the rise of critical race theory are coming to fruition in the Maori party. They seemingly want to return to the tribalism of 1839?

  The majority of Maori don’t want it.
  
  But, just like in New Caledonia at present, where the majority of New Caledonians want the status quo, a few very vocal separatists can make a lot of noise and cause a lot of trouble.
  
  No doubt this Maori separatism appeals more to younger hot-heads. As the Maori population gets younger, and nore numerous, the scales will tilt more in their favour.
  
  We’re now at the stage that Maori make up 20% of the population, but over 30% of the younger population. Given breeding patterns and the laws of compound interest, within 20 years the 20 will become 30 and the 30 will become 40.
  
  Within a few decades we’re looking at a situation where over 50% of young people are Pacifika (if that term is used any more) and the scales can flip.

    They don’t make up 20% of the population. If that figure is even accurate it will include people like me (a 6ft white girl, strawberry blonde and blue eyed and 1/16th Maori. Also an ACT voter). If these people can be categorised as “Maori” because they have Maori heritage somewhere then they can just as accurately be categorised as European. (And that’s before you even get into political inclinations etc). It’s all nonsense.

  I wonder why he didn’t say he’ll take 100% of the tax take of those on the Maori roll? That would be fairer, and support his separatist agenda. He could ask Tainui and Ngai Tahu to start paying tax. That’ll be interesting to watch.

  There used to be an American reality program called Cops and among other things the police would do roadside tests of suspicious substances found in the cars they’d stopped
  If they came back positive the offenders were arrested and detained in prison awaiting further tests or whatever
  It made for good TV, but unfortunately half the time the road side tests were wrong . . . . .

    Not so sure I’d agree there. TPU are an advocacy group – to be effective, they should have more than ‘the government should do something’ or ‘not do something’ as a pitch. It wouldn’t be that hard to put together a list of things they would like to see cut. They do some good things but this is a bit of a fail on their part.
    
    And before anyone smart Alec responds with a ‘well what would you do’, well there is so much fat in the public sector that this is an easy job to do – you just need balls. There are agencies that provide no benefit whatsoever and would struggle to justify their existence – Ministries like the Ministry for Pacific Peoples, Ministry for Women, Ministry of Maori Development, Ministry for Children for example should all be seriously up for the chop – they provide jobs for the public sector and provide very little, if any, benefit to the supposed targets of these Ministries – ask them to explain what benefit their existence has and the only response would be a word salad.
    
    Then you can move onto the Departmental Agencies, the Crown Agencies before circling back and then looking seriously at each department / ministry and fine tuning their mission / objective.
    
    Really not that hard to provide even a few talking points in response to a ‘what would you cut’. The issue is balls, or the lack thereof.

  The cancer drugs could have been provided, all national needed to do was cut 1yr free Uni entirely. That would have covered the entire cost of the drugs AND left us having to borrow around $750m less per year. One simple change of many available.

  They campaigned with promises based on the Prefu.
  The Prefu was audited as correct.
  The Prefu was a giant lie and was fundamentally overstated.
  Stuff had to get cut/delayed to balance the budget and unfortunately those cancer drugs were what had to go. Given the degree of dishonesty that Robertson committed in the Prefu I’m impressed that was the only thing cut.

There are / were many obvious savings not realised in the budget that could have more then covered the cost of the drugs i.e. removing 1 year fee free uni, removing the yearly kiwisaver top up, closing a number of useless government agencies, removing funding for RNZ, selling TVNZ (not much money here though), EV charging network rollout etc

I see South Africa’s election results seem to be panning out pretty much as the pundits predicted.
The ANC is around 43%, with the MK party (a break-away from the ANC) on 10%. So together they’re able to make a coalition at this point.

Voter turn out 58%. Pretty low for such a pivotal election. This pretty much indicates that ANC voters rather didn’t vote than vote for someone else.

  Will be interesting to see how the ANC react.
  
  If the results hold, and quite possible that they will stay the same at the final count, then the various factions in the ANC are going to have a full-on fight over the coalition choice. EFF means a significant leftward shift with some scary policies in there (“….not calling for the slaughtering of white poeple…..at least for now” – and yes, an actual quote from their leader) – even the ANC think some of the EFF policy is too much…..at least for now. MK, which is effectively Zuma and co, has some serious bad blood with Ramaphosa and might want his head as a price of a coalition. Unlikely, but not impossible, the ANC could even choose to go with the DA.
  
  Suspect that Ramaphosa’s only chance of remaining as President is a coalition with the DA.
  
  Will be very interesting to see how this pans out.

      I have seen many say that the MK is primarily picking up those disaffected ANC voters that would have otherwise not voted – rather than actually stealing votes off the ANC.

        My theory is that those who disliked the Ramaphosa faction decided to give their support to MK. The ANC also leaked voters to EFF, DA and IFP and a large constituent to the disengaged.
        
        They will only return to the ANC fold if they have something to gain, like following a new populist leader.
        
        If Ramaphosa makes a deal with MK to form a government many traditional ANC supporters will join smaller parties.
        
        The Zulu and many others, especially Europeans and South African Indians, see them as the “superior tribe”.

    The MK only split from the core-ANC earlier this year/last year therefore I think they can come together quite easily.
    
    The ANC has always been factionalised, but have acted together in their common interest of troughing. The ANC-MK split is really just those factions splitting.
    
    In some ways it could even be a fake split – a way of soaking up disaffected voters who are tired of ANC incompetence.

        I grew up in the rural areas outside Pietermaritzburg.
        
        The whites in KZN, especially inland, have a special connection with Zulus and feel proud of “their Zulus” and “their Zuma” and feel some pride in the Zulus being a superior nation.
        
        Unlike other whites in SA, inland KZN whites very much understood that the Zulus were the top of the pile. We all learned to speak Zulu when I was a kid. In fact some whites on farms only learned to speak English when they went to school.

    Would you consider yourself a Ramaphosa supporter over an ANC supporter? Or ANC over Ramaphosa?
    If you voted 3 times for ANC then you would have voted for them during the Zuma era.
    Zuma’s support in KZN seems to primary be due to him being a Zulu rather than anything else. Even many whites in KZN who are not ANC supporters talk about him in a positive way “our Zuma” etc (meaning that he’s from KZN).

  Plus it would take 19 years to come on stream.
  Plus storage of at least 1 years worth of biomass so that it dries properly. Plus the emissions burning wood produces. Plus ash disposal.

  No. The 34 felonies relate to the separate invoices, payments and related book entries to pay the one NDA payment Cohen made.
  
  The 3 “felonies” were for the “crime” that Trump was covering up. They were what allowed Bragg to bring the misdemenor charges up. As long as the jury agreed that Trump covered a crime it wasn’t relevant which crime he covered up – as per New York law.
  
  Federal precedent overthrows that but there’s a whole lot of appeals before it gets there.

The four main electricity gentailers have just announced to the Stock Exchange that they have reached various agreements for the supply of electricity to the Tiwai smelter indicating that NZAS has decided to stay in for the long haul. Until now, Meridian has been the sole supplier and had an agreement with Contact to spread the risk. That agreement will not be renewed with NZAS completing an agreement with Contact directly.
This is a win-win all around and will now give more certainty to the generators when they make decisions to invest in new generation and to Transpower in planning grid extensions and reinforcements.

  The PR was all about using renewable energy, but the cheap stable electricity comes from nearby hydro.
  The deal is good for Meridan because Tiwai will be first to be sacrificed when renewables are not available, avoiding embarrassing blackouts.
  Over the 20yr life of the contract gas generation will decline (increasing dependence on intermittent generation) so power companies will come to depend on this crutch more and more and more. Additionally, the ETS pricing mechanism will tempt power companies to turn off Tiwai rather than use coal to meet consumer demand.
  
  The overall impact is to reduce Aluminium efficiency and total production thus reducing export income for New Zealand.

    The Tiwai load has always been an ‘interruptable’ load. For example if there is serious system event causing underfrequency the smelter operator will reduce or disconnect the potlines. This is highly inconvenient and has some cost but is tolerable as long as supply can be restored before the aluminium solidifies in the pots. The smelter operator would rather do this if it avoids a system collapse which would have major consequences for the smelter. The Transpower system operator recognises this sort of situation and will get power back to the smelter as quickly as reasonably possible.
    There is nothing wrong with using the smelter to help with ‘demand side management’ where mutually beneficial agreements exist. If the issue is peak load or system problems the smelter reducing consumption would be covered in the agreements and would would have been a win-win for the smelter and retailers. If the issue is an energy shortage, the agreements allow ease backs. Admittedly it means some lost production but that has to be accepted. The gentailers welcome a firm long term commitment from the smelter for most of its power needs, it gives the gentailers confidence to invest in further generation.
    The Electricity Authority were given a sharp lesson by Genesis not to interfere in the market several years ago. While the Commerce Commission could be tempted to interfere, this could stifle investment in new generation and means that investment risk is transferred from the gentailers (where it belongs) to the Government (especially a centre-right government) that does not want to carry the risk. There is a huge risk of this happening if any reforms are attempted which try to split retail from generation.

Last week, before the budget, I was contacted by a company that supplies services to the exploration industry. They are looking for a machine that can help them.

I’m not so sure I agree with the assessments about Tiwai Point getting a 20 year extention.

Aluminium smelting requires massive amounts of electricity and, essentially exports energy. The smelting operations will go wherever they can get cheap electricity for a long period.

Jobs: well there are 700 of them, but committing 580MW of electricity to secure 700 jobs is iffy. Electricity is a scarce resource – becoming more scarce – and we need to look at using it wisely. Expending nearly 1MW per job does not seem that good a deal for our economy.

“Barclay said the smelter life extension deal removed uncertainty for the electricity sector and helped pave the way for new renewable energy plants to be built.”

I will be interested to know how. Large non-discretionary loads (like aluminium smelters) are inconsistent with the unreliability of most renewables. Smelter pots can’t be turned off when the sun doesn’t shine or the wind does not blow.

The aluminium smelters will be getting guaranteed reliable supply – taking the cream off the top.

As we move more towards renewables and the electricity supply becomes more constrained and patchy, it is going to be the rest of industry and domestic users that will have to put up with power interruptions.

If they really want reliable supply then it is time to start digging up the Southland lignite. There is enough there to reliably supply all NZ’s energy demands for many hundred years.

  The alternative is to cut Tiwai adrift and plug Manapouri into the national grid where most of the time the power isn’t needed anyway because apart from a few hours here and there there is plenty of generation capacity already

    Electricity can be stored at little to high cost. Hydro stations provide storage and there is sufficient at present to ‘buffer’ solar and wind power. There is little cost with this as the storage already exists. Higher cost ways of storing electricity are batteries, storing fuel (ie coal for Huntly) or pumped storage hydro such as the shelved Lake Onslow scheme. Problem with Lake Onslow was it would have been of far higher capacity and hence cost than would have been utilised for many years. But then Labour had no compunction about high cost projects as Labour assumed money grew on trees. National’s Nicola is far more savvy about such issues.

  Keith, I am in no way a vax supporter (I am unvaxxed myself), but there is a problem with drawing conclusions from these sorts of statistics.
  
  The problem is that you have self-selecting populations. Therefore there might not be a causal link.
  
  An example I like to use is that KFC-eaters are more likely to have cars that fail WOF. If we jump to conclusions we might assume that somehow KFC fumes cause cars to degrade faster or something. Of course it is something different – KFC eaters tend to be from lower socio-economic backgrounds (I don’t know why – it’s bloody expensive) and they tend to drive older cars.
  
  When we see statistics like these, they raise a flag, that there might be something interesting going on. There very well could be, but it needs more investigation than just finding a correlatoion.

  Perhaps those who choose to be vaccinated have more than average health issues and wish to protect themselves against ‘flu, Covid etc which could complicate existing conditions. In such cases, people are more likely to die prematurely from existing health issues. So saying vaccinations contributed to such deaths is a false correlation.

I was looking at some South African voting stats and realise I was missing something…

So far voter turn out has been around 58% of registered voters. Not very high.

But only around 65% are actually registered (27 out of an eligible 42 million – the rest of the 60+ million population are kids and foreigners).

So the real voter participation rate (ie people who vote out of those that are eligible to vote) is only around 37% – just a bit over a third.

It makes you wonder why all the fuss over one man, one vote if you’re not going to bother exercising that vote.
