Order of New Zealand

I’m going to steal this idea from the NZ Herald. They asked for feedback on who would be suitable to join the Order of New Zealand – our highest honour and restricted to 20 NZers.
So lets have nominations in the comments section below. No negative nominations such as “Not Helen Clark” but positive ones. You can disagree though with nominations others make.

Accuracy David, its nots to 20 NZers. It’s restricted to 20 LIVING New Zealanders.
And Johnathon Hunt is one. Super.
My nomination is Bruce Simpson.

Peter Jackson – genuine international success story with very a very Kiwi-style, and most importantly he has remained here an established an ‘industry’ instead of heading off to the bright lights. For all the talk about the ‘knowledge wave’, the ‘creative economy’ and technology breaking the tyranny of distance he remains the only high profile example of someone putting meaning into these otherwise empty slogans.
September 25th, 2006 at 9:06 am
So how long until someone says “Helen Clark” just to open the floor to people who want to say “Not Helen Clark”?
The Herald has some reasonable picks.
Kevin Brady is rather funny. I’d have said the better recognition for him would be that any time anyone sees him ’round town they ought to start a spontaneous standing ovation =)

Maurice Gee. For over fifty years, he has been producing distinguished work as a novelist (both for adults and children), screenwriter, and much under-rated short story writer. He built up a stellar international reputation when New Zealand books were rarely published beyond our shore, and did so with books firmly placed in our history, society and landscapes without apology or compromise.
And last but not least, he’s doing some of his best work at an age (he is now 75) when most of us would be thinking about slowing down a bit.
Let’s not have Gee be another one of our artists and writers for whom dropping dead was the best thing that ever happened to their reputations.

Esme Tombleson. National MP for East Coast during the 1960s. She was a great dancer, a signalman in the Aussie military during the war. Married and farmed on the East Coast. Tore into the doings of the region, MP 1960-72 and did huge work for the people. Founded the Muliple Sclerosis Society of NZ and was president for many years as well as the East Coast branch. Set up other disability organisations and worked tirelessly for them.
A hard, tough and intense woman who drove people to achieve things they didn’t know they were capable of. She’s old (b 1917) and worn down with strokes now, but she can still fix one with a glittering eye and demand an accounting. A true pioneer.

Helen Clark, for such strength of leadership. She is the leader of the best Govt money can buy.
September 25th, 2006 at 9:38 am
BURT!
We’ve talked about this sort of thing!!!
September 25th, 2006 at 9:41 am
I agree with Craig (gasp!) Maurice Gee deserves this. The man is a true literary genius and an important chronicler of aspects of NZ life.
September 25th, 2006 at 9:41 am
Ian Wishart – the man who goes where media angels (and demons) fear to tread. Probably the only investigative journalist with a backbone to act, and the evidence to back up the action. And Helen hates his guts……so there is enough reason to be nominated right there.

Don Brash: for being Reserve Bank Gov’nor.
would have got one no doubt by now had he listened to his anti-tour leanings and joined Labour, or even his pacafist leanings and joined the greens. But he still deserves one.
Richard Prebble for services to Parliament. Had Labour not been corrupt, they would have appointed him Speaker before the last election.
September 25th, 2006 at 9:43 am
Don Brash, for such will for leadership. He is the leader of the best party the EB money can buy.
September 25th, 2006 at 10:05 am
Good call Craig, Maurice Gee.
September 25th, 2006 at 10:09 am
Certainly Brash for his stint at the Reserve Bank, it is widely praised around the world as a model for others. Roger Douglas for biting the reform bullet which needed to be done and which no one really wants to change in any substantial way. Labour has eaten away the edges but the major structural reforms are untouched. Peter Jackson, no problem there.
September 25th, 2006 at 10:19 am
I see this has instantly turned into another frothing session. Let’s see if we can get this back on track.
I’m with Craig re: Maurice Gee
My other one is Chris Knox. I know he is a raving leftist and you may not like his style, but you have to admire him.
September 25th, 2006 at 10:41 am
Sadly if Johnathan Hunt has one then it devalues the deservedness of those listed above, Peter Jackson, Maurice Gee are definite choices.
I think NONE of the present politicians need think themselves worthy, but one older STATESMAN that is deserved is Sir Douglas Graeme I realise he has already been acknowledged but his is the type of integrity that needs to be injected into the present house and quickly.

Personally I still lament the loss of Knighthoods (another way this Labour Govt is trying to distance itself from our Soverign). This NZ Order thing almost seems like us giving ourselves a prize – kind of like a guy missing out on a medal at the olympics, so his local club making him one when he got home because they thought he deserved it.
Yes, I know we ought to honor our NZers and I can’t exactly say why I think like I do, but I do. It seems somehow not worth as much.
September 25th, 2006 at 11:23 am
Bob Jones, just to see how eloquently he would refuse it.
September 25th, 2006 at 11:34 am
John Hawkesby!
September 25th, 2006 at 11:43 am
I agree with John.
Esme Tombleson is the kind of unsung kiwi who quietly gets on with the job and who should be recognised in the honours. A life genuinely dedicated to public service, never looking for recongition or reward.

The guy that picks up my rubbish. Why? Cos most people get these awards just for doing their jobs so why not?
September 25th, 2006 at 1:00 pm
Fletch – now remind me who it was that decided we as a country didn’t want Knighthoods any more?
I have the same view on this subject as you, but can’t reconcile who it was that made the decision for the entire country that Dame and knighthoods were to go!
Knight and Dame-hoods were in my opinion something to be held on high, yet now we seem to have some trivial little token trinket that isn’t worth mentioning.
Although this is the legacy of this Govt, everyone gets a prize, doesn’t matter if you are 1st or 659th you still get a medal!
Is this another of Margaret Wilson’s thesis topics being lived out in some sick parallel!
September 25th, 2006 at 1:35 pm
Maurice Gee is an excellent suggestion. Is Margaret Mahy already an ONZ?
The Finns are a good suggestion, but what about Mike Chunn? As well as a fairly successful music career he has been responsible for finding/producing other acts and in working for ARIA has helped NZers make a living out of their art here in NZ.
Doug Graham? I’d need more convincing. He was a bit of a nonentity until he found his niche as Treaty Settlements Minister. Of course, what he achieved there may be enough?

Phew
My pick would be Nancy Wake (The White Rabbit) Better late than never.
September 25th, 2006 at 1:57 pm
And of course, Peter Jackson, it’d be hard to argue otherwise.

Pablo:
Just as a courtesy, could you please provide a link in future, with a short description and quote? I rather miss what relevance a five thousand word article on public sector management had to this thread, so I’d prefer to make up my own mind about whether I want to expend time and bandwidth on it.
September 25th, 2006 at 2:38 pm
If they give one to old Joe Hunt they would give one to anyone. Why not give him a second one he is large enough for two. Or better still give one to another Labour Policitian or whoever. Who the hell cares about these things, except a narrow clique of gong collectors.
September 25th, 2006 at 3:49 pm
David W…I agree Nancy Wake would have to be a number one choice. Peter Jackson, Hamish Carter and Sarah Ulmer as role models. Bob Kerridge the Auckland SPCA man would also receive my approval.
September 25th, 2006 at 4:29 pm
Taito Phillip Field and Brian Connel, two outstanding New Zealanders, loved by both of their respective political parties.
September 25th, 2006 at 5:57 pm
Agree with fletch.
Knighthoods had history and tradition etc.
And at least everyone knew what it meant. Not like this Order of New Zealand or New Zealand Order or whatever it is. How many people do you think actually know what that is?

Abolish all honour systems. There will undoubtedly be populist and partisan nominations that result in people already having enough recognition or who don’t need it getting them. Also forces nationalistic tilting. There’s no reason there can’t be private honours.
September 25th, 2006 at 8:23 pm
How about my mate Tom. He’s 43 shacked up with a 22 year old goddess who just wants to jump him 24×7. He’s an outstanding man.
September 25th, 2006 at 10:27 pm
I note Margaret Mahy is already in. I’d second Jackson and Gee, and suggest perhaps Ralph Hotere and Hone Tuwhare.
Also, looking over the list of current members, I think perhaps there should be a ban on politicians and senior civil servants. A few of the deceased ONZ holders that fall in those groups probably deserve it, but the case for the current ‘ordinary’ members with political/public service careers seems fairly thin.
September 25th, 2006 at 11:29 pm
Just because there is a limit of 20 doesn’t mean there has to be 20 members. I reckon appointing people for the sake of it devalues the honour. Wait until someone has earned it.
September 26th, 2006 at 12:04 am
good call Kiwi Bloke.
I second or third a call to return to knighthoods/ damehoods. Stupid to ditch them for something that has no historical honour attached to it.
Agree also that government appointments for simply long-service such as John Hunt shouldnt be allowed. Must be an outstanding contribution to the nation… such that kids in school learn who they are, and why they were considered worthy of such an honour. Doing ones job sufficiently well doesnt quite cut it.

Robin Hapi – has handled the billion dollar Maori fisheries allocation seamlessly. Not a dollar missing or a scandal in sight. Surely a miracle unequalled in NZ society or commerce?
