Dominion Day as a holiday
September 26th, 2007 at 7:25 am by David FarrarThe NZ Herald editorial is against Dominion Day (today) becoming New Zealand Day. Richard Long is all for it, but Colin James is unconvinced.
I have long held the view that we need both a Waitangi Day and New Zealand Day. One shouldn’t see it as a choice between the two.
Colin has a point that Dominion Day may not be the best choice for a new New Zealand Day, and I’m very open minded on it being say the anniversary of the Statute of Westminster in November.

Who gives a fuck about what day it is. Why the fuck do we have national days anyway, it’s as stupid as forcing everyone to celebrate Easter when you’re not a Christian. I couldn’t give less of a fuck about the Anzacs.

Another public holiday right about now, would be cool.

So declare a republic and celebrate its birth!
Given the history, September 26th wouldn’t be a bad day to do it on.
(Unfortunately, we’d lose Queen’s Birthday. But people are already celebrating Matariki instead, so we’ll still get a June holiday

It might be worth celebrating if we actually did cut the ties in 1907 – you have to realise that it took another 40 years before we actually started to act as a Dominion however. Dominion Day (1907) is barely even of symbolic significance, instead, revealing our national immaturity – something that our now adolescent ‘realm’ is beginning to realise as it reaches the early stages of puberty…

You’re dreaming small. I;m with I/S we should be celebrating Republic Day.

I’m told by a US friend that, holiday-wise, the best thing to be is Jewish. You get a plethora of your own faith’s holidays, but no one expects you to come to work on the Christian and National holidays either.
Which might be the best reason I’ve ever heard for professing a belief in the supernatutal. I’d conclude by recommending wholesale conversion, but I suspect many of us would go off the idea when the mohel arrived.
The point (yes, there is one) being that – with the notable exception of Anzac Day – most people don’t pause for a second to reflect on the underlying meaning of the day off, so it’s all academic. We might as well decree Kiwiblog Day, when we all get to head round to DPFs and raid the wine cellar.

Tim
so nice to hear your comments. Bar Humbug sound familiar. Still keep working hard Tim paying your taxes. I can’t remember too many people on their death bed saying “bugger I wish I spent more time at the office”

Are you serious, have you ever been to a Marae on Waitangi day, come down to Otako my dear man, you may be surprised.
JesusCrux, could you please fuck off and play your (christian?) music to your pet Big Ted in the cupboard. The Cupchick thing is oh so clever. By the way it has no replay value, just like your friendless music. Mind you is there some mixed message about how shit your music is that I am missing?

My opinion is that New Zealand Day should be the day we introduce a republic (cut our ties to the British monarchy).
Amongst the existing days of significance for this – December 10, the day we realised authority over our constitional arrangements in 1947, is my current pick. Obviously Dominion Day or the day launching our independent parliament are the other options. Alternatively we just pick another day for our Republican public holiday.
I favour a republic starting in the year following QE 11′s death.
A republic need not have a President or require any significant constitutional change. All it requires is a declaration that the Crown is the sovereign people of New Zealand and that a Governer General of the Republic acts on behalf of the Crown (the sovereign people). Everything then continues as now.
ps
I don’t see any point to changing the flag while we are ruled by the British Crown. We should have a new flag when we become a republic.

Paul: I’ve never been to Otako, no, so I accept my statement may have been a bit sweeping. I have been on other marae on Waitangi Day and I, and it seemed to me the vast bulk of everyone else there, was in the “I have to be here in an official capacity or I’d be at the park with my kids” category.
The best Waitangi Day celebrations I’ve ever attended have been those held in Australia, where no one feels the need to bang on about “160 years of injustice” or “uppity Maori” or anything else, and everyone just enjoys being NZers united against a common enemy (the uppity Australians
)

Paul I am glad you raised the necessity most of us to work for a living. I guess the welfare freeloaders you triamph probably say on their deathbed “bugger I wish I could have screwed more out of the Government while I was alive.” But every society has its parasites and freeloaders. The Labour Party bases its political support on such people.

“welfare freeloaders”
Once again welcome to the reality of Tim Barclay. BroTown is a comedic cartoon on television. Sure someone recently took home a forklift, but that’s funny too.
Is this the point where I’m meant to retort with something along the lines of
“old-boys-network-screwers-and-pillagers”?
What’s wrong with you guys these days? spring taking just a little long to get there, there’s very little wit here – just vitriol.
