Morons Add this story to Scoopit!.

NZPA reports:

Many voters were morons and he did not want them to vote for him at the general election, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters told his NewstalkZB radio audience today.

I think Winston is being far too tough on voters when he says many of them are morons. I’d do a ballpark guess and say that no more than about oh 5.72% of voters are morons :-)

Let’s hope they respect his wishes & vote for someone else.

  2. BlairM (1,575) Says:

Oh dear, Winston just alienated his entire support base right there. I thought he was supposed to be an astute politician?! ;o)

  3. Inventory2 (7,223) Says:

Most of the callers to his “show” this morning were so old they probably couldn’t hear what he was saying!

  4. barry (685) Says:

Winston is quite right – about half of the voters are morons. They are the one who didnt vote for the party I voted for last time.

  5. PaulL (4,409) Says:

But DPF, why do you keep picking on Winston? Must be because you are feeling threatened by National’s soft vote and Winston’s ability to drag the punters in.

(Ooops, I seem to have been channeling toad there)

  6. toad (3,228) Says:

Um, what about those who vote for “make hookers criminals again”, “bring back the bash”, and “deny queers the human rights the rest of us have” parties?

Guess the morons might be migrating away from the single issue “keep NZ free of slopes” NZF position to other parties acting in the interests of bigotry. Not that they are registering significantly in the polls!

Hopefully, NZ might be moving on from this sort of intolerance promoted by Winston, Brian Tamaki, Gordon Copeland etc.

  7. side show bob (3,646) Says:

PaulL given the amount of money winnie has given to the racing industry he probably has dragged the punters in but I doubt it will be enough for him to keep his snout in the trough come election time.

  8. Chris S (109) Says:

BlairM: You’re not writing Winston off are you? ;) The easy way to tell who’s new to the game are those who write off Winston…

  9. getstaffed (7,395) Says:

much as i dislike winnie and also believe that most of his voters are morons, sadly the problem goes much deeper than 5.72% of voters. far, far to many NZer don’t value their vote at all. while it might be a stretch to call them morons, every vote cast by someone who is disinterested and uninformed is a vote that dilutes those of folks who are keen and engaged.

  10. glubbster (345) Says:

It just shows Peter’s unbelievable arrogance to say voters are morons.

Peters has a core constituency: the elderly as well as those who fear NZ reaching out into the global world (economic and immigration fears) and his relative electorate & party vote popularity in Tauranga (compared to the rest of the country). One reason for Peters success is that in the 80′s and 90′s Labour and National governments broke their promises and Peters positioned himself as the anti-major party apparently moderate party. This is his protest vote pedigree. He lost it (and almost everything in 99) when Winston First went into coalition with National only to then regain it on the back of National’s pathetic 2002 effort where otherwise National voters who were disenchanted with National split off to other parties.

This will be his toughest contest since 1999. But now he has no real electorate seat chance so his eggs are in one basket.

He is the 5% populist now and may attract enough of the Labour vote to compensate for his losses to National this time around. This is in serious doubt though as he tends to do best when National do not so well as his constituency is made up of conservative voters – I put his chances at 50/50 or 1.85 each way at the TAB if I was a gambling man.

  11. Rex Widerstrom (4,529) Says:

Goodness, someone clearly advised Winston to go on a “charm offensive” but he only caught the tail end of it.

    Meanwhile toad notes:

the single issue “keep NZ free of slopes” NZF position

Typical bloody lefty, denying the obvious again. Slopes are extremely treacherous – you can lose your footing and your walking stick can go out from underneath you. Good on NZF for standing up for it’s base and demanding slopes be banned and stairlifters installed on all public inclines :-D

  12. Lee C (4,120) Says:

Well, on this occasion at least he is honest. Usually the same sentiment is masked behind a phrase which describes stuff we can’t possibly understand as a ‘beltway issue’.

  13. Roark (77) Says:

I’ve never had much respect for Winston but on this matter he is absolutely correct. The voters of this country are moronic sheep who are stupid enough to believe a leftwing media and buy into the nanny state. They are dazzled by advertising campaigns and fall for lines like “PC gone mad” and “slippery” without realizing these are just manufactured stories being spoon fed to them in the most condescending manner.

Politics in this country is a pointless gameshow appealing to the lowest common denominator. Strip the government to the bare essentials and leave the market to run the show. That would sort the wheat from the chaff and ensure the morons that make up the bulk of the voting public would no longer subject us to the tyranny of their mediocrity.

  14. baxter (893) Says:

Which party does he expect his caucus to vote for then.

  15. peterquixote (231) Says:

    don’t nothing change farrar,
i not a moron yet i bet i vote for winston this year,
critical votes to be counted yet farra.
them got Maori and them labour got Green,
    and we got winston,

  16. Gerard Barry (20) Says:

Winston should have been asked for his definition of a moron in the political sense. Here are some some multiple-choice answers:
A – Morons are persons who always vote for the NZ First Party
B – Morons are persons who always vote against the NZ First Party
C – Morons are persons who have voted specifically for Winston Peters since his formation of the NZ First Party
D – Morons are persons who would never contemplate voting for the NZ First Party
E – Morons are persons who think that Winston Peters is the best Minister for Foreign Affairs that New Zealand has ever had
F – Morons are persons who believe that Winston Peters is New Zealand’s greatest statesman
G – Morons are persons who want a Winston Peters-free environment

The most correct answers are F and E

  17. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Actually, Peters may be on to something. I was listening to Rod Hide yesterday, and the people ringing him were all typical socialist knuckle dragging retards, just so embarrassingly stupid – “whine whine whine, why doesn’t the gummint fix it?, whine whine whine, where’s the money coming from?, whine whine whine, can’t compare us with Australia, (right actually, there’s quite a few Australians with brains, compared to very few NZers).

As I listened, I thought to myself- ‘this is hopeless- these people are beyond help’. They’re all as thick as three damn planks, politically narrow and utterly dependent on gummint, living examples of what a decade of socialism does to a country.

..and Hide was so patient and he tried to explain but the socialists just couldn’t see. I felt like yelling at him “for chrissakes, give it away- they’re hopeless, you’ll never get through to such retards” but I didn’t because he wouldn’t have heard me. Nevertheless, I thought he was far too kind to the callers. Those utter utter dumbfucks need scorn and derision and insult and abuse, not patient and reasonable explanation. They’re not ever going to get it, and all they’re going to do is drag NZ down into the gutter. Fuck ‘em I say. Sooner this country bottoms out the better, and everything else is just shifting the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Forget it Rod. Thanks to Klark and her power obsessed gang, the county is totally rooted, and will be for some time to come. Here’s the best thing you can do. Get out. You’re totally wasting your time trying to reason with these socialist knuckle draggers. Leave them to sink in their own shit. Its the only way they’re ever going to get it, and even then, they probably won’t.

  18. Roark (77) Says:

living examples of what a decade of socialism does to a country.

It isn’t a decade Red. It is 168 years. But you are right. Fuck ‘em. The whole lot will fall over and only the strong will survive. I just don’t think we’ll see it in our lifetime mate.

  19. Paul Marsden (714) Says:

Your’re right Roak, we’ll never see it, and the country will continue to slip further into the abyss. In fact, I predict within the next 100 years (or less), there’s a good chance that the State Government of PR China will most likely be our masters, either by proxy or, otherwise.

  20. LabourDoesntWork (189) Says:

However many moron voters there are it includes people who need a tax-payer funded television ad campaign before each election to let them know a) it’s coming up, and b) this means they can vote if they’re over 18.
Corollary: Morons are also the people who want to encourage such people to vote.

  21. vto (986) Says:

I don’t call him “Winston Bjeikle-Peterson” for nothing.

He sounds more and more like him every day

  22. Paul Marsden (714) Says:

I wish he did. Bjeikle-Peterson is dead.

  23. RRM (4,112) Says:

Redbaiter: “the county is totally rooted, and will be for some time to come. Here’s the best thing you can do. Get out. You’re totally wasting your time trying to reason with these socialist knuckle draggers. Leave them to sink in their own shit.”

Go on then! What are you waiting for? I’ll give you a ride to the airport if you want.

(PS: 2 instances of “socialist knuckle-draggers” in one post – as dextrous an artist of the metaphor as ever, I see!)

  24. OECD rank 22 kiwi (2,528) Says:

Has Winton First paid the money back yet? Where is the $158,000?

  25. Lee C (4,120) Says:

OECD – you just gave whoever is Winston’s opponent in the election their slogan –

    ‘Pay it back, Winston!’

  26. simon wellington (6) Says:

maybe he was referring to recent asian immigrants (you know the one’s who can’t speak english and walk on the wrong side of the footpath ((and the (((27))) libertarian party supporters)) ?

  27. Murray (8,734) Says:

OK chronic, toad, ghostwhotalkscrap all the rest of you Winston DOESN’T want you to vote for him this year.

  28. stephen (4,058) Says:

Yeah, hur-hur-hur those guys are DICKS!

  29. Bob (326) Says:

5.27% morons? The Australians have a saying that if a donkey was included in an election ballot sheet it would get 3% of the vote. Personally I think 10% of the population as morons is more like it.

  30. Barnsley Bill (742) Says:

I listened to Winston yesterday and it may surprise some of you that I actually enjoyed the show.
He spoke clearly and with passion, he sounded okay and the moron comment was passed in response to a very offensive text that he had the nuts to read out.
Now clearly we all know better, Winston is only interested in what he can secure for himself. But he sounded good and spoke a lot of sense. What a shame somebody who has the ability to inspire has sold himself so cheaply. Blankets, beads and muskets modernised to morph into baubles.
If I suddenly start blogging about lawn bowls can somebody please call an ambulance.

  31. Right of way is Way of Right (996) Says:

Wasn’t it another Winston, who once said. “The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.”

    Churchill, I believe!

  32. Lee C (4,120) Says:

I wonder what would be justified by the existence of blogs, by that logic?
