Boston

Had a day in Boston before returning to DC. A lovely city and I ran out of time to see everything I wanted to. I got invited to a party by a couple of MIT students I met on Martha’s Vineyard so saw a bit of MIT but did not have time to see Harvard.

This is part of Boston Common – a very nice park in the middle of North Boston. They have lots of memorials up to those killed in the Civil War, the Boston Massacre, the War of Independence etc.

This is the Bull and Finch Pub whose outside was shown on every episode of Cheers. The interior does not resemble Cheers as that was filmed in a studio. However another Cheers bar has been established in Boston which was designed to look like the studio bar.

The cast of Cheers watched the series finale from this bar.

A state of Paul Revere on his horse. Revere is famous for his midnight ride starting 18 April 1775 to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams that the British Army was on the move.

His ride was not famous during his life, but became so after Henry Wadsworth Longfellow made a poem of it in 1861.

This is the USS Constitution – one of the first three warships of the United States Navy – and still in service today!

She was built in 1797 and saw active duty until 1881. In 1907 she was designated a museum ship and is used to promote understanding of the Navy’s role. She sailed under her own power in 1997 for her 200th birthday.

The Constitution is captained by a Commander, and has 60 crew – all serving Navy personnel.
