“Mr Harawira announced today the Maori Affairs parliamentary select committee would hold an inquiry into the impact of tobacco use on Maori” SC submissions close on 29 Jan 10

So… pretty much the the inquiry is looking into whether or not tax should be raised on cigarettes to prevent maori from smoking – whilst I would like smoking rates to decrease, I don’t think raising tax is the solution. There are many examples in NZ where the cost of a drug (or the threat of prison) is not a deterrent

Anybody else have an opinion on this?

These anti-tobacco, anti-fast food, anti-alcohol nazis will continue their campaign to either increase taxes or ban the things they oppose. This time the Maori Party will try to bend the arm of the increasingly weak Key government.

If a few morons, stupid, thick people cannot help themselves but to gorge on fatty foods, booze or fags, they consider their duty to tell the rest of us how to live our lives by banning these items. That the perverse logic the do-gooders use.

Captain Neurotic – smoking

Why not have a licence, similar to a driver’s licence, to be made a requirement for the purchase of tobacco products. No personal ID’ed Smoker’s Licence – no sale. This licence should be available to anyone over 18 years of age, perhaps with a doctor’s relevant certificate, but on issue for a period of three months only – so anyone believing they are dependent on, or addicted to tobacco may in that time avail themselves of the licence. After the 3 month period no more licences would be issued – ever – other than replacement of lost cards.

This will cater for those dependent or addicted now, the group always regarded as a ‘difficulty’ when bans are spoken of, but would make tobacco products inaccessible to new buyers.

There would be an inevitable abuse of the system, with black market licences, the need to provide for tourist smokers and other problem areas, but those would probably not outway a serious consideration of a step like this, which would hopefully deplete the market, by natural attrition, to the point where tobacco companies would find their operation unsustainable.

1] Many people have to already produce ID to by tobacco products and alcohol.
2] If Government may raise the price of tobacco and if so why not put the revenue obtained into a scheme like this?

Well, yes that is a basic question. Governments, representing us and our use of health resources, either decide to do something about these issues or nothing, but if they are going to something, I wish to hell it would effective.

Make a limited-time-of-issue licence available to confirmed smokers, and then prohibit sales to anyone else [and just accept, as you point out, some genetically befert will break the ban] but those still smoking with their legal licence will DIE and with them an economic market for the manufactures of tobacco products. QED.

Pete, you miss the point.
I was speaking of the benefits of infrastructural safeguards (eg building codes) that typically Western nations have in place as a result of their Christian heritage, and the blessings (largely past tense) of their past submission to the God of the Bible.
I outlined this in an earlier comment.

So while being a ‘Christian nation/individual’ doesn’t make you immune to disasters such as earthquakes, one of the benefits that you do have is in the area of infrastructural safeguards such as building codes. Something it appears Haiti had little or any of (building codes, etc).
And remember, I live in Wellington.

A little aside:
Did you know that Wellington has the most stringent building codes on the globe?
NZ is recognised as leading the world in the area of building codes, but Wellington has ‘additional’ requirements in the area of wind and earthquake loadings.

And anyone (Muslim or otherwise) who embraces the God of the Bible becomes a “son of God”, and is subject to His spiritual and physical protection. Those that do “convert” generally do become a more “caring prosperous people”.
Of course we are not immune to natural disasters – we live in a fallen world too, after all.

Primarily, though, the protection is in the area of eternal security.
At the end of the day, each and everyone of us, both Christian and non, have a death sentence upon us – you and I will both die physically, Pete. But as a Christian; a son of God, I will not die spiritually (Christians have eternal life), but those without Christ will suffer spiritual death; separation from God for all eternity in the lake of fire.

Bottom line:
Christ came not to feed the refugee and provide aid, but rather to save men’s immortal souls.
So while we may pour aid into Third World disaster areas, if we additionally shared the gospel with those individuals, then God would look after His now children both in the here, but more importantly, in the hereafter.

To save the body in this life, but not save the soul for the next, is essentially an exercise in futility.

It seems that PC-tiptoeing-on-egg-shells has infested conservatives all over the world. What are they so afraid of? From what I can tell, conservatives far out-number left wing loonies so it can’t be about loosing votes.
