Auckland Super City Mayor Andrew Williams

July 10th, 2010 at 10:17 am by David Farrar

The Herald reports:

North Shore Mayor is standing for the Super City mayoralty, promising to inject his own colourful style of politics into the contest.

Mr Williams has started as he means to go on, firing potshots at the two heavyweight contenders Auckland City Mayor John Banks and Manukau Mayor Len Brown, and comparing himself to unconventional mayors, such as London’s Boris Johnson and Invercargill’s Tim Shadbolt.

Comparing himself to Boris Johnson – ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

I’d like to nominate Sir Dovemeyer Robinson to return as mayor of the supercity.

He was batty, but in a nice way.

The fact he’s been dead for many years only enhances his appeal.

I don’t know which is worse…. being in Auckland and having the choice of Banks / Brown / Williams or living in Christchurch and having the choice of Anderton or Parker.

A family friend used to pay the money each election to stand as a local candidate. He said it was the only way he could vote in good conscience.

Perhaps they should add a “No confidence” option to the ballot and start again from scratch when everyone ticks that

Christmas came early for the Whale Oil house I suspect. This is the best thing I have heard all day.

Williams is on a different planet, not fit enough to even be scraped off Boris’s shoes.

Williams is clearly deranged and should be ignored. He is another useless local government politician with delusions of grandeur.

You have to feel sorry for the people of North Shore who voted against him in the last election. Those who supported Williams deserved his lunacy.

I think most of you here are missing the point here.

Andrew Williams has no chance of winning the mayorlty. He knows that.

Williams only does things that benefit Andrew Williams. So what’s the benefit here? Easy. He knows that the media coverage of the mayorlty will give him added name recognition and publicity during the elections. It is undoubted that he will also stand for Council. He has just bought himself untold publicity, including possible TV appearances, at the time he is standing for Council in the Albany Ward.

The Mayor, whoever it is, picks the committee chairs. That will be done in unison with others. My pick is that Andrew wants a seat on that council and closer to the time he may well pull out of the mayoral race, and make a statement he is backing Banks or Brown, whoever is looking like will win. That will be his deal to get on the “power” side of the council, if elected.

Andrew Williams is power-hungry. This is nothing to do with the mayorlty, nothing at all.

Gooner – I’d say that’s a spot on analysis. The guy is a clown but a very cunning clown. Reminds me of Krusty from The Simpsons.

Krusty/Williams: “Hey, I do more than TV! I had a one-man show on Broadway/North Shore! That’s who all showed up…one man! Ba boom!”

I‘m sure bloody well hope Aucklanders will react appropriately toward the prospect of an incompetent drunken megalomaniac.

    There is no perhaps..

No confidence in any of the candidates should, in fact has to be, an option.

I feel sure that such an option would do wonders for voter turn out.

North Shore City Council would be the worst council in Auckland as far as getting building/resource consents is concerned. They are there to be as unhelpful as they can, and know very little about the job they are suppossed to do. In comparison Auckland City go out of their way to help. This has to be a reflection on leadership and if so I give Williams a zero!
We certainly DON’T need Williams to head up the super city. Put him out to pasture to retire!

Yes the evidence has piled up hasn’t it, GJ.

What strikes me with both he and Len is that they bring it on THEMSELVES by their OWN behaviour: i.e. it doesn’t need to be. I find this a curious path to success and a telling indicator toward their political future.

There are very few people in whose political demise I’d take pleasure, but he and Len are two of them.

And once again, Whale was the first onto them.

I’d say both comparisons are about equally (in)accurate.

A Tale of Two Cities. Chapter 1. By A.N.Onymous.

Let it be known that during the great depression of the late 21st century the worlds economy had collapsed under the burden of heavy taxation and deceipt.
The people demanded that a new leader deliver them from the evil grasp of the Socialists and free them from the bondage of their emmissions.
The time was right for John 1st and his wealthy Knights of the Business Roundtable to declare war on the evil socialists by bringing his estates and errrant sheriffs under control.
John 1st looked upon his cities and decided to banish the Lords from their fiefdoms for spending John 1st gold carelessly.
Fearing an ambushacade from Lord Robert of Waitakere, a Helen the Machivellan devotee, John 1st appointed his trusted lieutenant Rodney the Sheriff of Remuera to lead the charge.John 1st gave Sheriff Rodney help in the form of a retired warlord Sir Roger the Reformer in cleaning out the socialist infidels.
Have no fear said Sir Roger, together with John the Methodist I shall crush Sir Len the Flagellator and Sheriff Andrew the Pisseur.
There is one problem said Sir Roger before commencing his campaign. Those saracens the Maoris have been war dancing.
I shall deal to them said John 1st. I will use trickery to get them to sign a Treaty then steal their Crown Jewels while they are feasting on shellfish from the foreshore.
Sir John declared Sheriff Rodney with a twinkle in his eye, You are truly a brilliant man.

I am a Takapuna rate payer and I am being asked to vote for a new Mayor for the Super City.

I have just become aware the North Shore City Council have spent $60,000 planting FIVE trees in Bayswater. See http://www.northshorecitycouncil.net.nz

As far as I am concerned this is a total waste of OUR money and from what I read the person who is fighting the council on this up against it, with his issue falling on deaf ears.

How on earth can we be expected to vote for Mayors, politicians or party when this childish nonsense never ceases?

This type of scandal has been going on by local councils since the beginning of time and I have never seen a Mayor who has had the courage or power to stand up and do anything about it.

I and a number of other people have sent email to our local MP Wayne Mapp and have not even had the courtesy of a response. It is obvious he needs a Map to find his way.

As far as I am concerned the inmates are running the Asylum.
