Jim’s latest excuse
October 10th, 2010 at 11:00 am by David FarrarNewstalkZB reports Jim’s latest excuse:
Jim Anderton believes national politics had a big impact on his mayoralty campaign in Christchurch.
The Wigram MP came in almost 17,000 votes behind Bob Parker, who took more than 68,000 votes.
Mr Anderton says he’s almost certain there was a polarisation around party politics during the campaign and with Len Brown winning Auckland, it could have been seen as a seismic shift in national politics if he’d won as well.
So Jim lost because Len won.

Local issues (and disasters) influenced the Christchurch election more than anywhere and more than anything. I don’t recall party politics being a significant factor at all, what he’s talking about regarding Auckland doesn’t make any sense anyway. It must be a bit deflating for an national MP to be soundly defeated in a local body election, but he’d do better to shut up about it.
Parker was seen as the best man and won. Democracy can sometimes be simple.

Jim lost because Bob behaved like a true mayor, putting his people first.
Jim behaved like an arrogant sod. He wanted to be a part-time mayor and part-time MP, do justice to neither role yet collect both salaries.
He held his people in contempt. I doubt whether he’d win Wigram now against a reasonable candidate.

Jim was arse rammed by an earthquake…pure and simple.Take a hint Jim and bugger off…

Maybe a bit of a tremor last week could have done Auckland some good.

My time in the Labour Party taught me what an a**ehole Anderton is. His arrogance knows no bounds. Parker’s missteps in office (Ellerslie Flower Show, shabby deal with David Henderson) almost handed the election to Anderton by default. Parker’s handling of the earthquake was textbook retail politics at its best and it revealed the sham of Anderton’s job sharing proposal. I wondered how deep he’d have to dig into the book of excuses to explain this comprehensive loss.

Jim is in denial.

Typical of the Left. Jim Anderson needs some lessons from John Banks on how to accept defeat like a man.

Here’s why Jim lost; from Stuff:
47 years of sucking from the public tit; little wonder that he’s known as the Troughmaster-General!
Jim Anderton is yesterday’s man. The sooner next year’s election arrives, and Jim is put out to pasture (with a 27-year parliamentary superannuation package to keep him comfortable), the better.

Jimbo had a telly debate with MAYOR Bob a few weeks ago where all he did was fire shots at MAYOR Bob and then wank on about his extensive experience as a Govt Minister and Deputy PM and then laugh or smirk at what MAYOR Bob said.
Vote:who is laughing now Jimbo
I’m sure you Internet savy people would find the debate .. it would be funny to watch now.
Jimbo, you are the weakest link, goodbye

Actually I think Anderton loss is very good for Labour.
At the moment there are a few pissed off people in Christchurch. Why are they pissed off? The answer is that Parker appearances on TV looking confident did nothing to fix their problem. Parker and his officials told them one thing they did the opposite. Their communication to the people most severely was practically non-existent.
Already Brownlee and Wilkinson have pissed off large sections of Christchurch. Meanwhile Labour MPs Burns and Dalziel with City Councilors Williams and Johanson have done an incredible amount of work to help those in genuine need (ie seriously damaged houses). Remember despite Parker’s win the council doubled the number of successful Labour Party Councillors and two of the four sitting citizens councilors lost their seats (1 lost to another citizen candidate)
Since the earthquake the weather has been good. This won’t last forever it will rain eventually come next winter there will still be people with no sewerage, still with wholes in their houses. Those people will be very pissed off.
At the end of next year we have International Rugby Competition. If Parker fails to fix the problem the international media will see angry protesters. Those protester will be able to show international media their damaged house and quite possibly raw sewerage in the Avon.
Then after the Rugby we have a general election.
With Parker in charge in Christchurch, and commissioners in charge at ECan National can’t blame the Labour Party. Maybe Key will call an early election before it goes pear-shaped

I see this national local body campaigning as a swing to the independents.
That’s being covered up as electorates swinging to candidates from parties.
The establishment is terrified. Soon councillors won’t come from political parties.
The old guard will be completely turned out and whole new councils formed.
And now with the ETS the environment boards need to be dismantled.
We should not be paying them and exorbitant CEO salaries and ETS tax as well.

Frankly I don’t think Bob winning was anything to do with the earthquake. Anderton made a fool of himself. Thing is, Christchurch has a very activist lot of Reds – you should have seen the “People’s” this and “People’s” that list of party factions looking for power. Just like a scary line up of Stalinist or Maoist zombies coming to life again for Halloween. And brazen about their old style politics that the rest of us thought was seen off with the Berlin Wall. They will not be happy that Jim let them down. To the Gulag with him! (I wish …)

so MAYOR Bob is lucky the weather is nice at the moment. If the weather turns to shit, the added problems will be the fault (pun) of MAYOR Bob, if the massive damage isn’t fixed before the world cup it will be MAYOR Bobs fault and what has Labour got to do with this that they can be blamed for. Chch is in a mess which will take months/years to fix and for you to suggest it’s all MAYOR Bobs and John Keys fault is bizarre

Political Parties will stay in the big cities.
It costs money to stand the only way the non-wealthy and non-famous can get elected in the main cities is to be part of a team.
The population of Christchurch is just under 400,000 people. With 6 urban wards where the average population of about 65,000 (or 45,000 potential voters). Without a team it is very difficult to win.
The 12 winners in 2010 election in Christchurch Council consist
Vote:Parties 7 (3 IC, 4 2021)
Famous 4 (Wells local TV, Buck sister was mayor, Corbett radio presenter, Keown former model)
Wealthy family 1 (Carter)

Inky the Red points to a subtle increase in left leaning Christchurch Councillors.
Often opposing the Corporate megalomania in Council were:
Chrissle Williams
Yani Johanson
Helen Broughton
They are re-elected but Broughton could lose her seat to Bob Shearer [ Parker supporter] on special votes.
New left of centre Councillors are :
Jimmy Chen is newly elected in Riccarton on a 2021 platform,
and Glen Livingstone from Burwood is also 2021 replacing the idiot Gail Sherrif
Also quite often Sally Buck votes for the people against the Parker machine.
All up we have 6 centre right Councillors.
Sue Wells, Barry Corbett, Aaron Keown, Ngaire Button, Jamie Gough, Tim Carter
There are two established family names on Council being young Jamie Gough and Tim Carter.

Inky is full of the usual righteous indignation of the left. He disavows Anderton but brags of his democratic socialism orientation on his blog…hmm last time I looked, apart from perpetual nutty lefty Paul Telfer, the only democratic socialist standing was Anderton! Perhaps Anderton cant spend others people’s money fast enough for Inky.
Inky is upset because shock horror the damage in Chch is not fixed one month later. For crying out loud what part of $4 billion did you miss. The EQC has a set statutory processes to follow. The claims made on its funds are more than adequately covered but if you treat the fund as some socialist lollie scramble to give away at will there would soon be no fund. Likewise insurance. Insurance companies have been underwriting this sort of risk for centuries – they too have processes and contracturally laid out claims settlement procedures.
Even if every claim is handled perfectly (and in an imperfect world they wont all be) there are insufficient assessors, tradespeople and even large construction companies with capacity to even come close to handling the repair work necessary even with all the extra help sent to Christchurch. Some streets in the east have suffered massive sewer damage. Large sewers takes months to fix. Its sad and tragic for those who live in the affected areas. There is only a finite amount of spare rental housing capacity in the city so some affected people cant find accomodation. Solutions to problems like this take time, careful working together of a myriad of agencies and government and private sectors and are not simply solved by “calling in the army”. Your post was a panoply of partisan whining.
Disasters of this magnitude have a raft of hidden and unpleasant consequences (the griding to a virtual halt of property sales as buyers and lenders assess the stabilty of the homes they are buying/lending against for example). Governments of all political hues will have imperfect responses to such disasters – it has been the case all over the western world.
Parker at least gives the job his full attention even if some of the tasks that must be done just cannot be done adequately right now even with unlimited resources. Anderton had the temerity to continue to suggest that he could carry on as Wigram MP AND sort out earthquake issues because … well he’s been in Wellington for sooo long. The voters of Christchurch punished Anderton for his abject arrogance.

What’s interesting to me is Jim Anderton’s claim that this was the toughest campaign he had faced in his political history.
I think he may be right.
In his previous political battles, he only had to pander to his political base in order to get elected.
But to run for Mayor, he had to appeal to the centre in order to have a decent shot at winning.
And after the quake to keep his campaign alive, he even had to go back upon a stubbornly entrenched policy decision.
Little wonder that he found it so grueling.
